Sandra Cantu Murder: Melissa Huckaby Arrested

Tracy, CA- At 2:59 AM PST, Melissa Huckaby, 28, was arrested on kidnapping and suspicion of murder charges for 8 year old Sandra Cantu.

Sources inside the investigation have confirmed to Blink on Crime that Huckaby had been on Tracy PD Investigators radar almost immediately. Huckaby was the last person to see Sandra alive, and claimed she frequently played with her 5 year old daughter at the home she shared for the last year with her grandparents Pastor Clifford Lane Lawless and Connie Lawless.

huckabyarrested-1

It would seem Huckaby raised immediate flags to police and the community when she told Investigators a black suitcase containing scrapbooking supplies for her Sunday school class had been stolen from her driveway.  Huckaby is also due to be sentenced on a theft charge on April 17th, in which she claimed to be mentally incompetent to stand trial. Following a mental evaluation, the court determined she was fit and she pled guilty of the charge.

Melissa Huckaby is the daughter of Brian Lawless, who is also affilliated with a Baptist Church; NOT his dad’s.

Blink on Crime has learned that although Melissa has told police  she is a Sunday School teacher at the Clover Baptist Church which her grandfather Lane Lawless is a pastor, she is not.

Huckaby is a volunteer Sunday School teacher and Church Choir member at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Bellflower, CA.  Located at 9246 Rosser St, FMBC shows both Huckaby’s Father and Uncle, Brett Lawless, are assistant pastors or Bible Class educators in a church completely unaffilliated with their Fathers. Odd.

Why would this woman have access to her grandfather’s church that by all accounts has no more than 15 members and has not had actual services in years? The last confirmed continuing education classes I can track Lawless to is in 2007.

Huckaby claimed to have received a note the day after Sandra Cantu went missing saying “Cantu.. suitcase..water..” with the word suitcase mispelled and at least the word Whitehall in it.  Blink on Crime has received an unverified tip  the note in question was actually written by Huckaby prior to a suicide attempt which landed her in Sutter Tracy Hospital last week in the ICU. Tracy Police were stationed outside of her room in rotating shifts while Investigators continued to build their case.

By Huckaby’s own admission, she volunteered that as recently as a few months ago, she was interviewed by police regarding a 7 year old girl from the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park who she had taken to a nearby park three times during that week with her five year old daughter.  She stated to several reporters in telephone interviews late yesterday afternoon that at approximately 2 am,  hours after she returned the young playmate, police showed up at her trailer and told her the child had narcotics in her system. Blink on Crime has attempted to corroberate this information with Sgt. Tony Sheneman of the Tracy Police Department, but Sheneman was unaware of the incident. He has requested that information from Investigators. Regarding the suitcase she claimed had been stolen, she told reporters that she did not have online access to report it, but her myspace page indicates otherwise.

melissamyspacelawless-1

Sgt. Sheneman answered a few questions from reporters last evening indicating that the information that led to Huckaby’s arrest came from her directly. When asked by a reporter if there would be more arrests he stated that he did not anticipate their would be additional arrests in this case, It is my opinion that Sgt. Sheneman chose his words very carefully for a reason.  He responded: “not in this particular case ..”

I will go out on a limb on this one and interpret that response for my readers, albeit subjectively, I admit.  You have a woman with a history of drug abuse, a juvenile record and current theft charges, who has been investigated for narcotics being found in a small girl, who was taken to a “park” in the evening for several hours . You have a town that is currently investigating 60 Sex Offenders, convicted of various assaults on children, and two recent high profile arrests of men within the school district accused of similar atrocities, awaiting trial. You have an 8 year old child abducted and murdered and I believe her pathology report will show drugs in her system. You have Fred Williams, a church member/caretaker with access to the church and shed who lies about a rummage sale, is seen on video dropping off the “letter to Sandra’s killer” at the memorial site , and lives in a 4,000 sq Ft. home worth over half a mill with extensive rap sheets for him and the Mrs. hanging on the fridge. Was that note to Mel to the Issa to keep quiet?

So.. the question becomes.. Why would she be drugged, for what purpose? I feel strongly this is the tip of the iceberg within Orchard Estates and the Clover Baptist Church.  On the comments section of my site, you will note their is a poster who claims Christian Sinclair and Huckaby are “dating.” You will also note that I received some comments from a person claiming to be Sinclair’s child. I checked them out, she is.  She posted that the Isuzu Trooper impounded by the FBI had been returned last week. She was correct, but what has not yet been, is his Cadillac, pictured here next to Huckaby’s KIA in the FBI Forensic Bay:

In a 3 am Press conference, Chief of Tracy Police Department Janet Thiessen spoke briefly:

..over the course of the investigation, agents and investigators from numerous agencies, have been instrumental in identifying Melissa Huckaby as being responsible for Sandra’s death.” “We have information that Sandra, by the time she was reported missing to us, probably had already been murdered.”

Apparently, per the DA the crime was sexually motivated….See the link below.

the news today the prosecutors will add a rape and molestation charge is so sad to hear. Poor baby…hoped she was drugged before she when thru this with a person she probably trusted completely. This woman deserve the death penalty is just umbearable to think what this child went thru in her last minutes.

  3. carol says:

Just a theory but I would suspect that when Sandra stopped in her skip and turned to walk another direction it was Melissa that got her attention. Or waved her over from her mobile home door. Nothing has been reported that her daughter was there that day when Sandra showed up.
Could Melissa have drugged Sandra at her home then walked Sandra to the park to give the drugs a good chance to do the job and walk her back to her trailer where she molested the child and over dosed Sandra on meth or prescription drugs she had from being hospitalized.
I still say a man is involved in what was done to the child.
The first child she took that turned up with drugs in her system was probably the child she was going to kill but the mother had Melissa return the child before it could take place. She walked that child to the park and this is what makes me think she walked Sandra to the park. What ever she gave Sandra she needed it to work in her system and if Melissa’s daughter wasn’t there she knew that Sandra would want to go find someone to play with or go home. She must have timed the walk so that she could get Sandra back to her home or in the church before 8 that night. Knowing that the police would be called as in the first incident. I would suspect she killed that child somewhere between 7 and 9 that night outside the church in a wooded area then took the body that night and hid it in the church. If the church had not been in use it would not seem odd that Melissa was in the church. Where was Melissa’s daugther when she took Sandra’s body from point a to point b. Did Melissa take her daugther with her or leave her asleep at the mobile home. There’s no telling how many other children she has killed over the years that are missing and could link her to their case.
    Very sad case.

I am curious as to why no one in the mobile home park heard or saw anything suspicious. It is very strange to me that Sandra could have been killed moments after the video and NO WITNESSES! I think I read that Melissa’s grandmother Connie was home. This is just so sad and confusing and just does not make any sense.

  5. Ashley says:

Has anyone noticed that MH has a very severely deformed skull? I have never seen anything like it. She is a horrible person anyway so it doesn’t matter but it is very strange.

I also believe there is someone else involved………..if so I hope they get them soon. I am worried children still arn’t safe in that trailer park.

  6. Miss Sinclair says:

well I am certianly glad to hear that I had to be “checked out” in reguards to who I am. ridiculous. if you decided to check anything else out you would know that the cadillac is NOT my fathers and the reason its still being held has nothing to do with the case any longer. also my father to my knowledge didn’t even like this melissa girl let alone have a relationship with her. you all just can’t leave well enough alone right? Last time I checked they arrested and booked someone other than Chris Sinclair for this crime that should be enough…
Ms. Albert- I would check out anyone who claims to be someone related to this case on my site, you should expect that if you were familiar. In the future if you do not want people with resources to fact check, I might suggest you don’t proclaim who you are. That being said, if your father was unfairly scrutinized, I apologize, but I did not pick him out of the phone book, and truth be told there are other arrests anticipated that may or may not have anything to do with Mr. Sinclair. You know full well that car is tied to your dad so stop treating intelligent people like we dont know what we are taking about.

Ashley, I’ve also noticed the deformed skull. Looks like she’s on meth or she’s an alien. I also, believe there are more involved.

Let’s not speculate on the grandparents, or any others, until the facts are in. Reputations are easily damaged, and hard to get back. How easy it is to assume, point fingers and backbite, let the police put it together before we trash the whole family.

  10. rebel says:

Wow, there are some harebrained theories being bounced around on here… “Overdosed on meth” was funny, but the deformed skull being attributed to being “on meth or she’s an alien” topped that… And then we come to the “Masonic Family last name” & Illuminati stuff, & finally the numerology & reincarnation wackiness… Nut job!!

  11. Candy says:

Been reading the comments here….very good theories and guesses on what would happen. Is it me or did anyone watch the footage of Melissa Huckaby today and watch her actions and reactions and think something isn’t right or isn’t complete? I just feel like there is something behind all this and dare I say she could be the scape goat or I dunno? Am I the only one thinking this?

  12. Honey says:

Rebel, I was joking about the meth and alien…But yes, I am a recovering meth addict and it will do that to your forehead and skull. It’s not a speculation or a harebrained theorie, it’s the TRUTH!

I am in no way being disrespectful, but very probably niave. Are you serious? Meth changes your skull and forehead?
You putting me on? I thought it rotted your teeth out or something.

    Btw- congrats on being clean.

  13. Honey says:

rebel, nothing is far fetched. The ( Nut job!! ) your talking about, is being accused of murdering and sexualy molesting an 8 year old child. I didn’t think a women could do such an unthinkable crime that she is being accused of. When I bring up the Masonic last name and Illuminati, I’m talking about an organized Sitanic group(s) who make money off of exploiting Children for their own gain. Maybe you should read my links before you call me a NUT JOBS!!

  14. Honey says:

Hi Blink, thank you. I actually had to run away to a small mining town, with less than 500 people in the community to get away from meth. Yes Meth will eat your muscles away too!! It will make your face sink in and look nasty, right along with eating your teeth away and brain, while destroying your organs.

  15. Honey says:

I really don’t believe Melissa did this under the name of God? To me it’s a Masonic evil move on her part. I highly doubt, she did this alone. By the way tones of Baptist Churchs are being investigated for child molestation abuses. Look it up!

  16. Sally Hindman says:

I’m a mom of an 8 year old daughter who weighs between 45-50 pounds. I am in pretty good shape and can carry my child when I need to, but honestly picking up a child, and picking up a 45-50 lb. suitcase and tossing it into the water are two separate things. How would MH have gotten the suitcase into the middle of the pond? She needed to not only slide it down the pond side (not difficult, as others have agreed) but to get it into a deep enough place in the water that it couldn’t be seen, was fully submerged. I just can’t picture how MH would be able to do this alone. It seems too far fetched. I mean did she walk the suitcase out to the middle of the pond? That would have worked and might have been possible to do alone–but at night??? Doing that at night would be very frightening and horrible. Also very strange!!! Would have to have been at least somewhat premeditated–how would she have known the depth of the water, even??? What if she got the suitcase out there into the middle of the pond and it wasn’t fully submerged. Throwing/pushing it into the pond just seems very uncertain. Perhaps that’s he reason the suitcase was found within a short time. I can’t picture a small woman doing this alone at night. In any event, clearly the holding pond was not a smart choice for hiding a body!!!

  17. ChefDulce says:

I have heard by professionals in the area of sexual abuse that because there was an object used for the rape this woman has the signs of a rape victim herself with a lot of rage inside. When I saw her in court yesterday and I saw how fat she is I realize it could be a sign of protection. Rape or molestation victims tend to add weight to protect themself from being hurt again. I feel horrible for her because maybe there was no one to help her work thru her anger… then again so many people are abused and they don’t go out raping and killing little girls to get even. I am sad because in this case I see how violence to children is recreated in the future by the adults who suffered them. Please if you will do harm to a child consider you are not only harming that child but future generations. Ask for help and you will be healed.

  18. Sally says:

I agree with this comment. What is starting to make the most sense is that Melissa Huckaby is someone who experienced severe sexual abuse during her childhood and who entering into adulthood started to psychologically unravel. I worked with an abuse survivor with a similar profile in my work for many years with homeless people. By the time he got to college things started to unravel and he no longer could keep it together psychologically dealing with the level of trauma he had experienced. He couldn’t keep a job, intimate relationships were impossible, and he acted out the trauma he himself had experienced by attempting to abuse a child. The difference is that the person I know hit bottom and got a huge amount of help without committing a felony crime that he was charged for. Melissa Huckaby seems to have fallen between the cracks and in the course of her own psychological break down committed a very serious, horrific crime. It’s really tragic. If she had been able to get the help she needed, if her family had been more knowledgeable about these sorts of things, etc. this could have been avoided. But often it takes some sort of precipitating incident before the acutenesss of the disturbance really surfaces. From this point, Melissa Huckaby will have a chance to get much needed therapy, needed medication and to begin to sort out what happened to her that caused this horrific incident. I know for the person I worked with, fifteen years after developing psychotic behavior resulting from the trauma and getting help, he still goes to regular 12 step meetings, is on SSI, takes significant medication and goes to weekly therapy. He is unable to hold a job and will probably never be stable enough for that or for a long term relationship. He is still dealing with the memories of what happened to him as a child on a regular basis but he is aware now of what happened and can deal with his feelings in a healthy way. He still sometimes feels suicidal but he doesn’t act on those feelings. Melissa Huckaby is a victim herself and I believe is in a lot of pain, facing enormous confusion and emotional trauma right now. I believe that this was what we saw in her face at the hearing this week.

Isn.t this just another result of fanatical right wing Christianity ?Obviously this woman has had severe mental difficulties for quite some time . Her Father and Grandfather are both ” pastors ” of fundimentalist churches . I am sure that she has been treated with prayer and ignorant religious rhetoric instead of the medical attention that was clearly needed . She was sent to Tracy from Orange County to live with her grandparents and “repent” . Poor little Sandra and her family are victims of the dangerous religious zealotry that has so infected and seriously harmed this country since the Insidious George Bush administration legitimized such nonsense . Gratefully , the era has come to an end but this country and most of all it’s children will suffer for it for many years to come ….I also belive that we have not seen the last of “Pastor Grandpa” ….

So, I’m curious… anybody here send her a death threat or jackass comment before checking that it was the correct person?

    ChefDulce had written:

“I feel horrible for HER because maybe there was no one to help her work thru her anger…”

    Dear ChefDulce,

I just wanted to ask you..

If this would have been a man.. A man who also needed someone there for him to help him work thru his anger..

Would you feel same way towards him if he’d raped and murdered a little girl?

I’m in no way trying to deride or otherwise belittle you on your statement, or your particular viewpoint, but merely attempting to understand other people’s perspectives as it relates to gender.

I have a great deal of compassion and understanding for victims of abuse, those who have endured childhood traumas from physical abuse and neglect to sexual assault.
No child should ever have to experience such a thing.

But I also realize that in many cases where a man is the perpetrator,
and he has a history of having been sexually abused himself, there is less forgiveness or copmapssion for him on the part of society.

He’s often looked at as a monster, as he truly is of course.
Who else would do such a horrible thing to a child!

But women on the other hand, are often times looked at much differently..
There seems to be mnore concern for the woman’s particular situation than if this were a male.

People often times come out of the woodwork and attempt to explain or minimize her present responsibility for her crime by injecting the “she must have been molested as a child” routine.
Or that a male must be involved somewhere in her past.

We’ve seen this on many such cases where a woman has murdered someone such as her father, boyfriend or husband.
    It’s often a good defense.

But you’d never hear about this when it comes to a man.

I believe society is responsible for this “double-standard” in how we look at such things.

I have to admit, I too, have been conditioned by society to “feel” more compassion towards a female offender than a male.
This is undeniably a truth most would have to agree on to some degree.
Woman are, of course, the victims in more cases than men are.

No one wants to see a woman crying, it’s something we’ve all been taught to react to.
As a young man, I was taught not to hurt a woman, but to love and protect her.

And so when I see a woman cry, it naturally disturbs me.
Even though she has done something that was very wrong.

But if I were to see a man crying during his arraignment for the rape and murder of a little girl, I’d feel nothing for him as I would not be considering his feelings but those of his innocent victim.

His crying would probably make me angry and I’d want swift justice to make him pay for what he’s done.
He didn’t seem to consider his victim’s feelings and now he’s wants others to consider his?

And although his past history of abuse or molestation would be a sad thing to learn.. He’s an adult now and there is NO EXCUSE for an adult to do what he has.
    That’s simply a cop-out.
Most people would not come to his defense for what he endured as a child.
There’d certainly be very little, if any, compassion for him, right?

So why is it that when a woman has committed the very same kind of act(s), many want to rush to understand the “why” and often attempt to minimize the woman’s actions because “she must have been molested as a child”?

That again, is society’s fault and failure.

Can you help me to understand better why you have taken this position?
Maybe others will give their input as well?

    Thank you, kindly.
And again, it’s not that I disagree or that I feel your statement is wrong, afterall, it’s your point of view and you have the right to present it as I or anyone else would ours.

    Sincerely
    Chris

  23. And for those here who may question my position, or who may be misconstruing my statements…

I too, have experienced sexual molestation as a child, by a couple that babysat me and my sisters.
My siisters were also molested by this man.

I was also beaten, raped and strangled with a ligature, as a young man while walking alone along a bikepath in southern California.
And I know perfectly well what women must go throuh, physically and psycholocically, during the performance of an interview/rape kit.

Therefore I do have some insight and information I feel is worthy of contibution in regards to what we are discussing here.

I don’t particularly mind that this is known to anyone as I have risen above the truama and stigma attached.
    My wounds are healed.

Now I deal with it having an intimate knowledge.

I certainly didn’t turn out to be a victimizer, although in some cases, the victim does in fact become the victimizer.

I just couldn’t imagine puting someone through what I myself was forced to endure.

    -Chris

  25. ChefDulce says:

    Hi Chris
thanks for your comments regarding my post. I have to agree with you that women do bring more emphathy than men do. It could be because according to professionals in this area the majority of women when they kill is for reasons which seem less predatorial than men and the proportion is only about 10% of all murders. Having said that its true that with same background and set of circumstances a crime commited by a man vs. a woman will be judged differently.
I for one feel sorry when I hear cases of men or women who commit horrendous crimes and more times than not you learn of their troubled childhood…however, there is a difference between feeling sorry and justifing/excusing which I don’t do. I know firt hand the damage caused by any type of abuse to a child and the horrible repercussions it have through out that person’s life. Unfortunately for this world not everyone thinks like you who couldn’t imagine putting someone to the same agony you were forced to endure. I am happy you worked thru your pain and became the man you are today. Congratulations!

Blink how do you explain the fact that you never mentioned MH before she was proclaimed to be a suspect by TPD. All your speculation and self-proclaimed insider information on the POI’s did not add up to a hill of beans. Instead you wrongly stoked the flame of suspicion against the Pastor, his Wife, and Fred Williams (this after giving the same to the trailer park POI’s) Admit it, you are as clueless as everyone else.

So- thanks for stopping in again. WHAT? I never mentioned Melissa Huckaby as a suspect before Police because like every other reporter who spoke to her, I spoke to her on her way to the TPD where she was arrested a few hours later. However, if you might reference a calendar, you will note I was:
    1) The first person to tie the suitcase to the church, Huckaby and Williams home yard sale.
    2) The first to report Melissa Huckaby’s hospital stay was an actual suicide attempt.
    3) The first to provide photos and call the “Black container” a suitcase.
    4) The first to report Sandra was in the suitcase, 7 minutes before the Pressr to be exact.
    5) The first to report the names of Lawless family members and the church in Bellflower
    6) The first to report Madison was with Judy Lawless since 3/28/09, and that she was not home as Huckaby said she was on 3/27/09.
    7) Whatever else I missed.

None of the above means anything to me as I would prefer N E V E R to have to bring such toxic sludge to the surface to begin with. This is about the murder and rape of a beautiful, innocent and promiseful child by a monster or monsters and you give a shiz who was first about what?
From where I sit, my speculation and inside info has been 100%, unfortunately. Something else, fellow choir member, this isnt over. How’s this for speculation? I “speculate” there WILL be another arrest, and it WILL be someone you mentioned on your crybaby post. Now What?

    Hi Chris…

I don’t feel anybody is perfect with their theories about the case.
People who live in the Tracy area may have more knowledge than I do because they can talk to people there and find out more things/things more quickly than I could.I found out a few things about a case here locally because I was able to talk to the victim’s friends and family.
I do think it’s pointless to argue about who was more correct about this case or less correct and doesn’t help the victim or the family. Justice for them should always be the highest priority for all of us dont’cha think ?

So you think someone else will be arrested…
I won’t dispute it. I have had a hard time accepting that the suspect, a woman would have done this on her own.Usually when a woman does something like this a man is involved either directly or peripherally…We shall see if it pans out.

  32. MackiezMom says:

I’ve seen many a meth user. I have seen people’s faces distorted from severe skin problems that resulted from meth, and have noticed that when they lose extreme amounts of weight, they have a skeletal appearance. In fact, I recall one girl who had been heavy since childhood, and was very ill after years of meth use, when became underweight, skin hanging at 42, her face looked so different, her eyes so hollowed, and even her nose looked different than it always had. She since cleaned up (after nearly dying… a 6 vessel cardiac bypass at 42), and her face looks the same as it did pre-severe dope problem (plus the aging that the years, smoking and meth use wreaked). I have never noticed changes in bone structure, though. The teeth, weight loss, and severe skin issues are the most obvious and recognizable physical side-effects of meth-use. Well…wait…that and teeth-clenching, neck-cracking, jittery/erratic behavior, hostility, sleeplessness, uh… but not change in bone structure. As for MH’s appearance, just like anyone else’s, combo of genetics and environment. If you look at the pre-arrest pictures, she doesn’t look like your garden variety dope fiend. I see what is being referred to…the pronounced forehead and the indentations at her temples. I don’t think that has to do with dope, though.

Anyway… I wouldn’t be surprised if she had a variety of substances on board, including some of the psychotropic drugs her granny was talking about. No excuse, though.

    Hi Atlantis.

You hads asked me; “So you think someone else will be arrested…”

No, I do not believe anyone else was involved in Sandra’s murder.

From review of the arraignment video, it would seem to me that Melissa Huckaby is solely responsible for her actions.

I know there is much talk about there having possibly been someone else involved, possibly a man.

But I do not believe this to be the case.
Sometimes statistics have no place in analysis and this appears to be one of only two or three cases in recorded history.

But hey… I was wrong about it being a woman in the first place was I not?? (sigh of failure)

Chris- o/t but I would really like to get your input on the Craigslist killer case, new post, this I feel, is right up your alley, so to speak.

I’m sure your friends miss you Chris. You need to come back home.lol.
and Yes you were wrong previously..as was I..and as were most folks. So don’t be too hard on yourself…

    I still feel there’s man involved somewhere/somehow….

Do you believe she was raped as she told some friends ? I do.That’s still not an excuse though. She might also have a personality disorder, if she isn’t schizophrenic.

    ATLANTIS…

You may have given yourself away..

You are a member of JD’s forum, are you not?

I never really left, although I was about to.

How could I ever leave that excellent forum and it’s members??

Yes, I believe Melissa may have very well been molested/raped at some
    point in her life.
The independent accounts given by three of her friends who did not know one another certainly appears to corroborate this claim of the police officer having sexually assaulted her in his patrol vehicle.

But again, that story could just as well have been fabricated for attention.
Melissa appears to be a woman with a very low self-esteem.

As far as her being a female pedophile?

I doubt that was the reason/facilitator for her murdering Sandra.

I believe that some kind of genital trauma was perpetrated on this child, but there can be a few other reasons behind it.
One of which is not animal/scavenger activity or decompositional gas-buildup causing the apparent damage.

    1. Out of anger.
    2. To stage the crime/victim’s body to appear a male was the perpetrator.

    Btw- congrats on being clean.

rebel, nothing is far fetched.

I stand by my “Nut job”, I too did my share of meth, I’ve been totally clean for more than 8 years, but never did my skull change shape… As far as the Illuminati/Mason conspiracy stuff, I won’t even dignify that by responding, & the “I died in a previous life in the year 222″ is so absurd that all I can do is roll my eyes & chuckle…

Oct. 2010 Testimony should start! It is March 26th 2010 and I don’t know of anyone else that has been arrested in this case. It seems MH acted alone in a crime of oppertunity. It is too sad! I will never forget Sandra Cantu. It makes me sick thinking about her last hours of life and if it was MH who was a friends Mom and Sunday School teacher Means Sandra Trusted her Killer. That is Jacked Up!!!

And People it’s ok to stick up for our loved ones, but remember some of our Loved ones are Jacked Up People too!!!
