Updated: The body of Sarah Foxwell has been recovered at approxiately 4PM EST today

Our hearts and prayers are with her family.

Wicomico County, MD– Abducted from her home at approximately 9:30PM the evening of December 22, Sarah Haley Foxwell was taken by a registered sex offender who is now in custody.

More than 3000 volunteers swelled the grounds of the Arthur W Perdue Stadium this morning, on Christmas Day, to help man the search that has been underway since she was reported missing.

Foxwell

Thomas J Leggs, 30, a former boyfriend of Sarah’s Aunt who has legal custody of the child, has been charged with burglary and kidnapping in connection with her abduction. Leggs is a previously convicted sex offender.

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis said Legg has been of “no asisstance to his investigators:

“She wasn’t in her room,” Lewis said. He said there was no evidence of forced entry to the home where the girls live with their aunt, who is their legal guardian. Leggs is a former boyfriend of the aunt, officials said.

A “juvenile witness” awoke during the night Tuesday and saw Sarah leave the bedroom with “Tommy,” and said he was wearing blue jeans, an orange jacket and white sneakers

Deputies found Sarah’s green toothbrush and a lollipop in the 2003 Dodge Ram truck Leggs admitted driving.

Leggs, unemployed, is listed as a high risk offender on Maryland and Delaware Sex Offender registries.

I read about this in the paper this morning and I’m afraid the situation looks pretty bleak for that poor child. I pray they find her alive, but it doesn’t look good. That guy is, IMO, just one more piece of, er, crud who shouldn’t have been on the streets.

    I agree, unfortunately.

Christie, well said. Sex offenders are violent and dangerous.

This hits close to my heart as I grew up in Baltimore. I don’t have a good feeling about the outcome. I totally agree with Christie, sex offenders do not deserve a second chance. God be with her.

  6. Momof3 says:

Do they have hard evidence connecting him to Sarah’s kidnapping? I hope he does one decent thing and allows little Sarah to be found.
I pray for little Sarah, her siblings and her aunt. So sad, that this might have been preventable…

  7. Moonchime says:

Oh, that poor little girl. Sex offenders Should NEVER be free to prey upon children again. I agree with you Christie–No second chances for sex offenders.

If I live to be 100, I will scream to the Heavens that pedophilia is incurable.

Blink this is so sad. How can we stop this terrible injustice upon our children? I pray daily that these types of people are locked up for good. I can’t believe they do the deed then are out just to repeat. My heart aches for this baby girl. UGH! And her poor family.

  19. Karen C. says:

The aunt should be charged with something too, facilitating of some kind, because that’s what this was.

What kind of a thrill do these perverts get out of killing an innocent child? Is it because they can’t fight back? Another child murdered before having a full life……..somehow castrating them isn’t enough to stop that S–TS from killing children.

Yet Again, a woman allows a sexual predator with a history of rape in her home and near children!! Allowing their desperate need for any male animal to be in their life regardless of the consequences.
When will they be equally responsible for the crimes against these innocent angels?? The aunt should be charged as well IMO.

Absolutely, 100% agree. If she had knowledge of his background, she should be charged. I am hearing this guy has multiple victims they are uncovering, sick.

  24. dddeerma says:

Just wanted to throw my agreement in on charging the Aunt with the full weight of the murder charge. She gave a pedophile access to a child. It is a caretaker’s responsibility to check out anyone who comes close to the child. When will we get our one strike law for rapists?

  25. Teri says:

    :(

Such a sad, upsetting, horrible crime.

Truly – what is this world coming to??

My thoughts are prayers are with this sweet child – and those that loved her.

  26. FairWitness says:

Here’s a solution to the problem of pedophilia; make it a FEDERAL CRIME like kidnapping. Upon conviction of sexual assault against a child (not teenagers engaged in statutory rape), the convicted shall be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. If they murder the child during the sexual assault, the death penalty shall be mandatory. This should apply to the 1ST CONVICTION. No 3 strikes allowed, not even 2. What do you think, Blink?

I love it accept for the mandatory death penalty.

  27. chitown lady says:

How awful for the family….My heart aches for them. When are they gonna just put these pedofiles to death? Im sorry but you CANNOT change them EVER! They are what they are…They are let out to pray upon this earth. Single women with kids need to KNOW who they are getting involved with….Its not hard to do…..Bless this child….

  28. Diz says:

I had such a sick feeling when I read that this child was missing and seen in the company of a known sex offender. I prayed that there was some tiny sliver of hope that she might be found alive. I was so irate that the perp in custody was not cooperative. I wish they had been able to start applying very painful stimuli to his pinky toe, and move up each body part, applying worse pain, until he told where she was.
When I read of the efforts to search for her, and then finally that her little body was discovered, I cried tears of pain, frustration and anger. Why why why does anyone still believe that sex offenders can be rehabilitated? How many examples does it take? How many more innocents harmed or killed by these seriously damaged people? LWOP is too good, and I do not want to support these people thru my tax dollars.
I, too, agree with a mandatory, immediate and public use of the death penalty. This continued wave of crime needs to stop. Now.
Sorry to rant. My heart hurts, and I am scared for not only my own 2 daughters, but all innocent victims.
I also pray that during whatever led to the end of her life, that an angel of the Lord was there to carry her through it, and then whisk her off to Paradise.
    Depressed and demoralized Diz

  29. chery says:

How sad- what does registering a sex offender do?? NOTHING.
how many stories per month do I read where a child was found dead by the hands of a registered sex offender -this is just a monthly occurrence in out country! why cant we have public executions?? why not- we would not longer have a “REPEAT OFFENDER” category.
NO forced entry, he had access ? I dont get it, there is more to this story involving the caretakers of this girl. It makes my heart ache.
I cant even imagine the pain the family in enduring in this situation.

  30. Emily says:

    Blink-

Are you opposed to the death penalty?

No. But I can tell you mandating it Federally would never get a bill passed as there are many states that overwhelmingly are.
    B

  31. Emily says:

    B -
Good point…I never thought of that.

  32. FairWitness says:

You make a good point, Blink. But we are sentencing our children to death by not imposing the ultimate in harsh punishment on these cretins. Several times every couple of months thousands of searchers are amassed to search for an abducted child, only to find the child sexually-assaulted and murdered. They are being sentenced to death by society’s lack of responsibility. We are guilty by the sin of omission. As long as we, the citizens of the United States, don’t demand the strictest laws and penalties against these vermin, we are no better than accomplices and enablers. I can’t take it anymore, I just can’t stand it, Blink. WE HAVE GOT TO DO SOMETHING!

    FW-
I support stricter laws in child sex crimes, absolutely. A pedophile is a rabid dog that will only stop when they are destroyed, period.
    B

  33. Red Ranger says:

How about making it mandatory that the judges who keep letting these baby rapers/killers free do time for each crime committed by people they have let go, or been lenient on?

You will see some hard-assed judges then. They will all compete to be meaner than Judge Roy Bean.

I say they start with the judge that refused to lock Carlie Brucia’s killer away at least ten times before he killed Carly. He is old and will soon recieve his judge’s robe , in hell.

  34. FairWitness says:

BTW, Blink. I believe the Federal Government imposes the death penalty for federal crimes committed even in states where there is no death penalty. Am I wrong about that?

No but in most jurisdictions the State Code handles those charges. I would be pretty certain that they would not wish to revert that system..
    B

  35. FairWitness says:

You’re right, of course, Blink. Congress would have to enact legislation making child sexual-assault/murder a federal crime, then mandate life without parole upon conviction. Getting Congress to include mandatory death sentences for pedophile murder would be almost impossible.

Especially with the Congress we have now. They have such disdain & contempt for “We, the people,” don’t they? Their super majorities in the House and Senate have transformed them from elected representatives to dictators. We’ll see about that during the next elections.

  36. FairWitness says:

Additionally, Blink, I think everyone can agree universally throughout this counry that pedophilia is an abomination which must be stopped. Making this aberrant behavior a federal crime should be relatively easy to build a consensus. I won’t why no one has championed this cause.

You just gave me an idea. Gimme a few, I think we have enough connections in the queue to start.

I AGREE!! I want these sickos off the street and I do NOT want to support them with my tax dollars. They deserve the death penalty.

  39. Karen C. says:

    FairWitness-
PLEASE don’t attempt to make this a conservative vs liberal or Dem vs Rep. thing- first, it isn’t, and second I think you are quite wrong about a federal death sentence on this type of crime. I think loads of people, INCLUDING DEMOCRATS, would LOVE to support such legislation! Most anyone who’s a parent would! There are other crimes that are federal DP, and enacted during Democratic administrations so get off your high horse with the “dictator” cr*p. “We the People” includes a LOT of people, not just you. I am SO sick and tired of conservatives trying to demonize democrats and politicizing every issue; we are all sick of murderous pedophiles!

On this topic I agree that this on the surface is a non-partisan issue. Unfortunately, every thing really is..
I will not allow this to go to a political debate. I do however, encourage anyone wanting same to visit scaredmonkeys.com, the blog.

  40. Karen C. says:

Oh, and I do agree with Blink, as I understand Blink’s position, that the problem would likely be Good Luck finding a death-qualified jury in states that do not already have the DP. You might end up with good ol’ jury nullification, unless the perp actually videotaped the crime, including the actual death. Lacking that, many a jury would just nullify. Every time I read someone going on about DP for rapists, I think, yeah, right- you’ve just seen your last conviction for rape, then! LWOP might be the most practical way to go, if what you want is convictions. Personally, this Independent would be happy with either one.

  41. jrock154 says:

I’m all for chemical or physical casturation for pedophiles!!! U put that with a life sentence and I think that would b a proper punishment, IMHO!!!

  42. Karen C. says:

And it would be applied! I’d rather see LWOP/chem. castration that is actually applied than a chest-thumping death sentence that isn’t. And there are numerous examples of DP qualified juries in DP states going soft and squishy when push comes to shove- even jury members who were proclaiming themselves to be real law-and-order types on their questionnaire forms.

This story absolutely disgusts me to the fullest extent. My little sister was staying the night with a “friend”, and the “friend’s” much older “boyfriend” stayed the night as well. The girl was 14 and the guy was around 30. and for some reason beyond understanding, the girls’ mother allowed the relationship and this sorry azz to stay the night, unknown to us of course. In the middle of the night, this monster raped my little sister with the assistance of her “friend”. The other girl that was there tried to stop it and afterwards, they went and locked themselves in the bathroom until he left. My sister was only 11 at the time. We didn’t know all of this happened until months later because he had threatened her not to tell and told her that he would harm her family. Thankfully, her real friend that was there that night ended up telling her mother and she in turn, told my mother. We later found out that he was wanted for molestation charges against a child and was banned from the property where the incident with my sister took place. They had a hard time with the girls he attacked beforehand because they were too afraid to speak up and testify. My sister was willing to do whatever was necessary to keep him from hurting another child. For her case, this loser received 55 years with 25 or 35 suspended. Atleast that’s what I think, I may be wrong. However, he is eligible for parole within the next 3 years and HE better pray to God it’s denied.

The mother of the 15 year old was not charged, and neither was the 15 year old. They both should be thankful that I have yet to see her or her mother. Absolutely disgusting.

I am even more protective of my sister since this happened. I have 2 boys and my husband and I make sure our oldest, 4, knows that no one is allowed to touch him in certain places, even family. It’s to the point that when he was 3 and the doctor checked his private area, he got worried and I had to let him know that it was ok for the moment. If he’s gone for the day with family, I ask him who he saw, where he went, and what he did. I’m a young mother but I take my role as a parent VERY seriously and protect my family by all means.

Sorry this post was so long; it’s just sad people don’t protect their children and other children as well.

Clearing the lump in my throat, I would only add..

“Have you run a check on the sex offender registry in your area?” How often do you do that?

Know who is in your midst, everyone.
    B

  44. FairWitness says:

Sorry, KarenC, my apologies for offending you. To be honest, conservative politicians don’t give a damn what we want either. Please amend my comments to mean elitist, career politicians, regardless of party affiliation, entrenched in Washington DC who don’t represent any of us and act as dictators. They all do it.

Legislation needs to be passed to protect all American children from the scourge of pedophilia.

    Sorry for my inappropriate post.

  45. Karen C. says:

Honestly, Blink, if I were single again I’d have to hire a PI each time I met a new guy…and rabbit19, I pray your sister is OK, as much as possible, now. She did the right thing coming forward- if everyone did that these guys wouldn’t have the ability to rack up victims in such numbers…

  46. Karen C. says:

Thank you, FairWitness- Fair indeed! And these points are exactly right, both parties are guilty of basically ignoring our needs if they feel those of their corporate (or union) “owners” come first. I would vote for an umbrella, at this point, if that umbrella had a do-able agenda for protecting kids from pedophiles- straight up. And I also agree with the no 3 strikes on it nonsense.

  47. FairWitness says:

Blink, would you please email me? I would like to talk with you privately.

I have read your posts elsewhere. I feel it disingenuous to speak privately. I would be happy to address any issue you have.

    Respectfully submitted,

    B

  48. Momof3 says:

Thank you FairWitness for having the manners and shuts pah to amend your comments. I agree with you. #43

    rabbit19,
Thank you for sharing a painful time in your life and in your sister;s life in order to help us see the bigger picture on the necessity to protect all children.

    Thanks for the reminder Blink.

  49. cmaissol says:

What is going on with these women and child molester boyfriends? How desperate for a man can you be?

I think the juvenile offenders should be public. We focus too much on adults when kids have more access to other kids. Average age for juvenile sex offenders in treatment is 14 – after multiple victims. Average age of victims is under 5. Now THAT is sickening…..

  50. Momof3 says:

I read that LE is looking into the fact that there may be more victims out there. Blink, do they mean murder victims or more victims of sexual abuse?
I am so saddened by this story. Sarah’s 6-year-old little sister’s eye witness account of who took her sister is what led them to this sicko. So many victims that have to live with what this creep did. I hope they have enough evidence to prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.
