Kleat, I think you are on the money. She was paranoid, and I do believe she passed him something, like a chip, I think a card would be too big. He too looked nervous as you said. Could they have been running a little sting together, and then he was through with her? Good catch, because something was not on the up & up in that clip.

I agree with you @ June 10, 2010 at 8:13 pm. I don’t have a link, now, however I did read that van der Sloot admitted to meeting Stephany on the 28th. Supposedly, she was killed on the 29th or 30th. So that would not be the first meeting. Also, didn’t the other gambler, who called Joran’s room state that he, Joran and Stephany had plans to go to dinner? I think that in the video , she either had plans to meet Joran at the table, or recognized him at the table from a prior interaction.

It would seem that the relationship was, at least, slightly more developed than what has been captured on the video.

  7. westsidehudson says:

I just tried to Google a link, but I couldn’t find it. It was probably in a foreign language, originally, and then I put it through translation.

  8. westsidehudson says:

Joran told the police that he Stephany at May 28, two days before the murder, met in Atlantic City casinos in Lima. They soon become friends. “She asked me if I was single,” Joran said. “I said yes.”

A Peruvian police general has said that Van der Sloot, who has been charged with the murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez, will not receive any type of leniency or plea bargain for information on Holloway….Van der Sloot also told police, Guardia said, that when was captured on hotel surveillance video leaving his room to get coffee and pastries, Flores was already dead. Guardia said he believes van der Sloot ate his breakfast in the hotel room next to Flores’ body.
His motive, Guardia said, was robbery.

    Thanks, just did. Baffling.

I will say, as objectively as I can muster, my radar went off with this kid the first time I laid eyes on him. Everyone’s satellites work differently, though, and unfortunately, for alot of our young women, they seem to turn theirs off on occasion.

A “snip-it” from CNN this morning:

Lima, Peru (CNN) — Joran van der Sloot told investigators during an interrogation that he knows the location of Natalee Holloway’s body, but he would neither identify the location nor say what happened to her the night of her disappearance, a Peruvian police official told CNN.

“In the interrogation done to the Dutch citizen, he says he knew the location of the corpse of the American citizen, but that he was going to explain everything to Aruban police,” said Miguel Canlla, head of the homicide division of the Peruvian national police investigative unit, on Thursday.

SICK! It’s all one big game to him, or maybe he’s hoping to go to jail in Aruba now that he’s seen what Peruvian Prison life might be like, wonder if the Aruban Police Chief (Joran’s dads BFF) is still in charge?

  16. Ragdoll says:

This is so EFFED UP!!!! He leaves the room with 2 coffees. Then procedes to knock on the door. No one answers of course. So he get a hotel staff member to open the door for him.

I have no words for this. It’s so effin disturbing how casual he behaves. I have no doubt in my mind this guy has an m.o. and other countries should look into unsolved murders and disappearances. Look into Joran’s presence around those times. This guy screams serial killer, imo. No way he’d be this cool if this was his second murder. No nerves. No remorse. Just a mechanical soul-less killer.

  17. Kleat says:

WSH, yeah, though that was a handshake or hand-touch greeting and not a chip pass from the overhead eye in the sky view, there’s still something more familiar about the greeting. Could be wrong. If you watch the overhead view of the two, Stephany pulls out her money clip while at the second seat from Joran, he keeps his head down and doesn’t turn it towards her but this is money she’s flashing. She pulls out bills from the clip, leaving lots more in it, and places it down on the table. Hands the money to the dealer and buys her chips. And Joran then gestures to her to sit down in the empty chair next to him and she does. Coincidence isn’t it, that he waits until he sees her flash the money and then invites her to sit close.

  18. Kleat says:

Joran gets a kick out of ‘his stories’ and is enjoying himself. We will hear a lot more about Natalie from him, as he plays the system and the media, and I agree, he’ll easily blame his father, he’s already showing that what his father said was inconsistent with his and the Calpo (sp) brothers versions. Every new twist gets him something, if only more kicks.

  19. Kleat says:

with the two coffees, pretending to knock, I think he notices the camera in that clip, maybe hadn’t noticed before, and thinks fast, and gets housekeeping to let him in his room for the record. He’s setting up an alibi, she could have looked in the room, he was already freshened up and in clean clothes, and the two cups of coffee were a cover too. He’s thinking, or, he’s innocent. Was the Jeep driven away and abandoned with the same idea, any record of when that vehicle was moved? Opposite direction to his own real escape, so he’s diverting attention to SOD?

Stick a fork in him, he is done.

  21. JR says:

The coffee video doesn’t make sense, except as his half ass attempt to ensure(on camera and in person) he’s seen with two coffee’s:
-He had entered the room with the coffees (for enough time to set them down)
-He comes back out of the room still with the coffees and ‘sort of’ locks himself out (which looks worse because you would immediately set down two hot coffees upon entering the room and certainly bring one to the other person you brought it for. You wouldn’t enter the room, remember something that requires you to leave the room again and not think of setting down the two full cups you are awkwardly juggling, before going to do something else.)
-He appears to close the door on himself as though he’s fully aware and even hesitant about locking himself out. (he doesn’t appear to come out of the room with a purpose, heading away from the room then suddenly stops in his tracks the way most of do, when realizing we’ve locked ourselves out).
-He barely even taps the door for the person supposedly inside to hear him and let him in (I’m sure if he really did lock himself out with the coffee he got for the person occupying his room, he would feel much more ‘entitled’ and far more persistent at getting them to let him in).
    - He doesn’t even appear to help himself with any verbal attempts that would accompany the knocking and alert the person inside that its him and he needs back in.
    - He basically seems hesitant the whole time about what he is doing or what he should do next. The only self assured “Joran” I see is someone cocky enough to have a hotel employee open the door ahead of him to a tiny room with a dead body lying right there on the floor!

The only thing I see in all the evidence that might work in Joran’s behalf is this kind of stupidity, indicating there couldn’t be much pre-meditation in this at all. A self entitled psychopath that loses his mind in moments he realizes there is something he can’t control. the only thing that will keep him alive in these peruvian prisons is his money and lots of it!

  22. Babyfacemagee says:

Paulus and Anita Van Der Sloot must be some incredibly manipulative and controlling parents for their son to turn out this way. Joran is utterly and totally unable to take any responsibility for anything he does. That to me shows while he was growing up he was conditioned by his folks to not be in control of himself, his emotions or his actions…through their parenting.

I think that’s why he ‘justifies’ everything and blames the victim, circumstances…anything but himself…and more and more his father.

It’s only a matter of time before he turns on his mother as well in my opinion. Once he realizes he’s screwed and stuck in jail he’ll start blaming her for abusing him or something. Just you wait.

  23. westsidehudson says:

I don’t think he ever noticed the camera in the hallway, until the last moment, and then you can see after he spies it, that his face takes on the expression of defeat. But his original plan was in play, so he followed through with the desk person to open the door for him. I also think that Blink may be right, they fake knocking was when someone may have appeared down the hall, (this is before he notices the camera).

  24. westsidehudson says:

    Exactly Kleat

This is where I think the premeditation of robbery comes into play.
She’s loaded, and he has to get her somewhere where no one can see him take the money away from her.

  26. Kleat says:

Ok, Joran’s story is (the version we’ve hear in the ‘confession’) that he goes out and leaves Stephany alone in the room, she gets on his computer and into his private life.

He returns, ensures that he’s seen with two big coffees at his room door and seems to knock, can’t get in, can’t raise someone inside. If Stephany is alive and on the computer as the scenario goes and he catches her reading whatever, she would hear a knock if he actually knocked and he’d stay at the door longer if he expected her to hear his knocking, even knock longer and louder, maybe call out to let her know it was him and he was locked out. He doesn’t do that, but he looks up at the camera– the glance in the video is clear.

He has apparently already cleaned up, the body not in view from the entry so the attendant can’t see in, besides, she’d probably not go marching in as she let him in, he’s not entering the room to approve it before accepting the room afterall.

He’s setting up an alilie for himself, to support the two coffees and a live girl in the room.

Was the tv blaring at the time of this re-entry? Maybe, that could be the excuse for his girl not hearing his knocks.

Everything this psychopath does is towards his own ends.

The latest claim that he knows where the body of Natalie is, is more enjoyment as he knows this will make the Holloway’s squirm, and he’s trying to get himself exported back to Aruba, maybe hopes the Holloway team and the FBI will push for this extradition. Good luck with that one, no other reason to say he will only tell Aruba officials, he wants to get out of custody in Peru first.

Casey A said ‘give me one more day’ and I’ll take you to Caylee and later she said she needed to be out of jail because she could do nothing to help find Caylee from where she was.

Same ‘stories’ and manipulation. He’s using Natalie’s death to his own advantage now, or trying to.

  27. AnotherVoiceHeard says:

After viewing the video from the casino, it appears that Joran and Stephany may have played at a poker table together previously. He may even have been stalking her because he could see she was a good player and was WINNING. He needed MONEY. He has been trying to exhort money FOR MONTHS!!! She has clearly come back to the table, and handed over a chip to him. (Notice how when his hand is back on the table, if you focus clearly on his hand, you can see a chip dropping onto the table…BINGO!!! Motive for murder is ROBBERY!!! (He had NO INTENTION of paying her back!) The next video shows a CLEARLY APPREHENSIVE young girl following him to his room. As the beloved daughter of a well-known family and a girl with 4 brothers who would be angry with her if they knew she went to his hotel room, she knew this wasn’t the best of situations, but she had her pride and a moment where she let her guard down, and wanted the money back that was rightfully hers. The next video with him leaving the room in the striped jersey and the 2 coffee cups shows a slightly unsure Joran trying to figure out how to look nonchalant while desperately figuring out how to make it look like a simple errand to get coffee. He knocked on the door as lightly as waving a feather!!!(She is now dead in the hotel room.) The next video shows the hotel maid opening the door for him. Was there ever coffee filled in those cups? Or just empty cups? Where is the bread or rolls he’s supposed to have been carrying? Does anybody see them? The last video shows him leaving with a packpack and a plastic bag of WHAT? Bloodied clothing? Murder weapons? No need to look for those…He started to kill her with HIS ELBOW!!! I cannot even fathom the unspeakable pain she must have endured as he elbowed her eyes so that one of them came out of the socket!!! He must have had the TV on loud enough so no one would hear her fighting back. She never had a chance. Once he grabbed her, he must have broken her neck quickly. Not any sounds after that. He is beyond a monster. Please Peruvian officials do not let this “overkill” go unnoticed!!!

  28. Sue says:

Anothervoiceheard – you provide a good scenario. I can even feel him getting an adrenaline rush when the maid opens the door and Joran KNOWS that there is a dead body in the room. But he also knows that she is out of sight of the entry way. How close she came to seeing the crime scene – Joran’s heart was pounding. He was quick to enter though so she wouldn’t see too much. What a high he was on for sure. He has to keep the high going so he continues to tell his lies from his jail cell. He has to stay in the limelight – all focus on him. What a monster is right. He will get his now. There is no way out of this one.

  29. AnotherVoiceHeard says:

I appreciate your comment, Sue…and knowing how that adrenaline rush must feel for Joran, I also can’t imagine that he will give up any information to the Aruban authorities or the Holloway family on Natalee’s whereabouts anytime soon. He should not have a lesser penalty regarding Stephany’s murder if he provides information on Natalee’s remains. It would be playing into his manipulative hands too well. The level of his evil is just mind-boggling. Unfortunately for the Holloways, I do feel that when Joran goes to prison he will be murdered by an inmate before he ever gives any truth to what happened to Natalee.

  30. Sue says:

Yes – AnotherVoice – I wonder at this point if the Holloways will ever find out what happened to Natalee. On JVM tonight, the panel was discussing the fact that Natalee’s body was probably taken out to sea and disposed of, and therefore her remains would not be there anymore anyway. It is not to anyone’s benefit in Peru to chase Joran’s stories and attempt to give him the benefit of doubt that he would ever tell the truth. They have a rock-solid case and he will be put away for a long time. Joran has “cried wolf” too many times to trust him now. You are right in saying that he will not be long for this world. They don’t baby their prisoners over there by offering them private cells for the duration of their sentences. Eventually, he will have to join the rest of the prison population.

  31. Kleat says:

AnotherVoiceHeard wrote: “Unfortunately for the Holloways, I do feel that when Joran goes to prison he will be murdered by an inmate before he ever gives any truth to what happened to Natalee.”

This might just be the reason Joran wanted to toss the carrot out about information about Natalie, pressuring people to ensure his safety in jail, giving him better than average ‘digs’ or the chance he will be able to say what he knows, might be lost forever. However, if he talks, he ruins his own bargaining power, so he’ll never talk as long as there’s something in his mind, for him to gain.

  32. Word Girl says:

Stephany had to be dead at the time of the faux coffee set up. She was pulled out of view or on the other side of the bed. JVS used cups from within the room. Watch as he hugs them to his body–they aren’t full of hot coffee, now are they? Of course not. He just came out of his room with them. (It must have been his morning routine to go for coffee and cake and then leave his trash around. No maid service, remember?)

He’s conniving at all times. Claro.

  33. Kleat says:

Word Girl, now that he’s in Miguel Castro Castro prison, and has his nice safe little personal cell just for himself, will he be able to con his jailers, and maybe the big director himself, with his office nearby? He can promise the guards the world for favours, the ‘rich’ foreigner with the roid pecks.

  34. Kleat says:

BTW, interesting to see the prison from space, only one road in, and desolation all around. Funny though, they say it’s crowded, yet it appears like some ancient empty monolith from above.

  35. Kleat says:

Putting the world of Lima Peru in context. A documentary from the National Geographic channel in 6 parts.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAzF87_BI0I&feature=fvw

In the Netherlands, the little I’ve heard recently, is that cocaine import is illegal under the Opium Laws, but drug use in the country is legal. So, we have someone like Joran van der Sloot who has used women for sex trafficking/human trafficking, so what was he REALLY about in Peru? Sure, a little holiday in a nice tourist town (Lima? an industrial town?) and a little poker because he loves to play poker, for 25 grand US funds??? How much would it take for Joran to talk a few girls into taking a holiday to Aruba with him, a bit of extra in their bags?

Look at the girls Joran is pictured with as attractive to him, and how they interact, so why would he pick up with Stephany, and educated young woman, who wasn’t the type to be exported for strip clubs or the sex trade, but who may enjoy gambling and money and risk.

Watch the reality of Lima Peru and how they use young tourist women as mules, and reality of the prisons.

Naw, Joran wouldn’t be into that, nice upstanding young man who gambled socially only, a good ‘sporter’. There’s more to this Lima picture than meets the eye.

What did Joran think he could talk Stephany into becoming part of?

  36. westsidehudson says:

Blink, you sometimes post on SM, I was reading there this morning, and my curiosity is killing me. What does “RU” stand for?

O friend, context please, half the time I can’t remember my own “isms”, lol.
    B

  37. Sue says:

Kleat – You are so right about Joran wanting to keep his bargaining power going. That power has kept him in the lime-light and in the money for 5 yrs. and running now. At what point does LE just say enough is enough? We are not dealing with the usual criminal mind here. We are dealing with a true monster psychopath of the ultimate kind here and he is trying to run the show. Shut him down once and for all. He will carry what he knows to his death without ever revealing the truth. Face it and deal with the beast accordingly.

  41. katts says:

IMO Stephany’s male relatives have been ominously silent, likely satisfied in their knowledge of the bounty on Joran. The world will not be a big enouough place to hide, not even in an Aruban prison.

If US Presidents can be assassinated……

  42. Kleat says:

Back to the coffee cups scenario, door knocking and being let in by a hotel employee.

I thought that Joran was returning to the room with the cups of coffee from an earlier report I saw, but video clearly shows Joran LEAVING the room WITH the two cups and pastry item.

This is a report in Spanish, maybe someone can help by adding what the reporter is saying– I might have it wrong just from watching the video.

Door opens from inside and light is on– camera time 08:35:39
At 08:35:49, Joran begins to appear in the doorway (10 seconds delay after opening the door)

Two coffee cups held up in his right hand, turns back to the camera and shuts the door, coffee cups still in view and door pulled shut first time by
    08:35:51.

He turns to his right while holding the door handle, as if he’s just locked himself out. Time is 08:35:54

Pulls at the door a couple times, putting his body into it as if it’s stuck.
Time 08:36:02 His back still to camera.

Pulls door again and this time the door is pulled into closing position.
    Time 08:36:09

He is looking towards the right, as if down the hallway to the right and starts to ‘knock’, his body is not blocking the view of his left hand as it tries to knock.

He lets go of the doorknob and makes a complete circle, showing his coffee cups and something else in his hand like a wrapped pastry (?) as he switches the cups and the pastry into his left hand, and he holds out his right to knock on the door.
    Time 08:36:19

He immediately moves his hand down to the door handle while watching away from the door, then turns to look directly down the hallway on the right side, his face is shown clearly and he knocks slightly again and then gives an exasperated ‘lost’ look.
    08:36:24

Again ‘knocks’ but doesn’t appear to really hit the door, hesitates and walks off camera.
    Time 08:36:35

One minute later 08:37:32, he appears in camera again and is looking directly up at the camera as he enters it’s view, swings his body around and leaves camera view again all within 5 seconds.

At 08:39:35, the hotel attendant arrives and within 11 seconds, has teh door open. Light is still on, the attendant does not lean into the room, but backs off as Joran, who has been looking downwards, walks directly in.

    Door shuts at 08:39:52

Total time lapsed for him to open the door and leave with his coffee cups and pastry, to the time he ‘returned’ still holding coffee cups and pastry, was 4 minutes 12 seconds.

    =======================

    Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_d04jBfAMY

(we don’t see another earlier time of Joran leaving to get coffee as his confession described.) Maybe he went out to get the coffee a few minutes before this, arrived back at the room, then thought about a way to pretend to need assistance, creating his alibi witness. But maybe it wasn’t an alibi witness at all, for the crime if he knew about the camera, it was letting hotel staff know that all was quiet in the room that morning, and even someone opened the door at Joran’s request. So they would more likely leave the room alone for hours, maybe days, without suspicion.) He must have known about cameras at the hallway corners.

Joran doesn’t need to talk to the Aruban authorities with regard to Natalee. Someone from Peru needs to talk TO HIM and squeeze the information out of him. I sincerely hope he is not killed in prison, I would like for him to stay there, all by himself, without his co-conspirators from Aruba, ALONE.

Surely, there is an influence in and around the prison that can make this happen.

  45. Kleat says:

When did Joran have time to drink coffee (espresso wasn’t in those huge cups, was it?) and eat four sponge cakes? He must have made an earlier trip out or had the coffee and pastry in his room. Haven’t seen a security video of that yet.

But after the door shuts in the coffee cup video, Joran is seen on the hotel desk camera leaving with his bags. Not much time to drink a big cup of coffee or even an espresso and cakes, grab his packed bags, check over the room and leave, nevermind eat four sponge cakes between 8:39 am and 8:45. Just no time unless the coffee cup camera scenario was done only for show.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100613/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/van_der_sloot

Now it looks like Zanny the Thiefy just committed the murder, according to what JVS told Chilean law enforcement.

“In the version offered to Chilean investigators, Van der Sloot said he and Flores were surprised in the early morning by two robbers in an apparent assault.
“A man came out of the bathroom blocking the access door with a knife in his hand. On the bed was another man with a gun,” the Spanish-language report quotes him as saying. “The man with the knife said to be quiet, but Stephany began talking in a loud voice and he hit her in the face, making her nose bleed.”

If I may channel Stan Strickland, I believe that Mr. Van de Sloot and The Truth are strangers. However, just like Casey, he weaves a little truth into every statement. Stephany’s nose may have been broken (by him) and he certainly was a thief.
He not only stole her money, but robbed her and her family of a bright and unrealized life.

    Kleat,
Great observation on the time needed to consume the coffee and pastry.
He was just trying to torture Stephany’s family with depraved, despicable
    thoughts. A psychopath, I declare.

An AP report dated today, has a video on the page that explains the lies, including the ‘coffee cup’ scenario briefly. This contradicts Geraldo and Fuhrmann’s earlier report about the ‘coffee run’ before the videos in the hotel were released.

Clearly, this was a set up. Going back to Klassend’s youtube page, his early video of ‘the lies’ and ‘Natalie knows the truth’ still holds true today, maybe even more relevant, as the lies are spun over and over still. Today’s AP report shows that Peruvian officals are unravelling the lies– finally someone is taking the real Joran seriously and not buying his stories without skepticism.
