Kyron Horman Missing and Endangered: Would Opening Boy Scout Perv Files Help Find Him?

Posted by BOC Staff | Blink,Boy Scouts Of America,Kyron Horman,Missing and Endangered,Missing Child | Sunday 13 June 2010 2:15 pm

Portland, Or– Kyron Horman, according to his parents, is an avid camper, beach go-er, and fisherman. While it is not known if Kyron is a cub scout, his older brother is a member of The Boy Scouts of America.

Kyron3jpg-42b82154c5c24430_large

While researching for this case, and the possibility a sexual predator might be involved, I was stunned to learn a self-admitted pedophile of over 20 young boys that police are aware of, lives freely in Kyron’s community of Multnomah County Oregon.

MERIT BADGE IN SEX ABUSE

Timur dykes

Timur Van Dykes, convicted sex offender and pedophile has been charged with over 26 crimes involving sexual abuse of minor boys since the early 80’s through 1994. They were entrusted to his care as a Boy Scout Leader and home teacher for the Mormon Church since the early 1980’s.

In a trial this past Spring, Dykes actions costs the Church of Latter Day Saints an undisclosed settlement, The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and the Pacific Cascade Council over $18 million in damages.

A $14 million sexual abuse lawsuit filed in Portland, Ore. is making headlines, due to the disturbing contents of confidential files from the Boy Scouts of America, which show that the organization knew of at least 1,000 pedophiles within the Scouts from 1965 to 1985, but hushed it up. Despite numerous sexual abuse lawsuits brought by victims against the Boy Scouts over the years, the confidential files were never obtained by plaintiffs’ attorneys, with most of the cases settled quietly out of court. Even more disturbing, the scoutmaster-pedophile, who molested the victim in the current lawsuit, confessed to Boy Scout leaders that he molested 17 Boy Scouts, but inexplicably, he was allowed to continue as a scoutmaster and have contact with boys.< ?xml:namespace prefix =”" o />

Dykes admitted to a Mormon Bishop that he had molested several young boys, but it was not the church that turned him over to police. The Bishop instructed Dykes to write letters of apology to his victims, and maintained his position within the church.

After a parent of one of the boys went to police, Dykes pled guilty to second degree sex abuse and was given probation.  As a condition of his probation, he was prohibited from being around young boys. However, he was permitted to continue as a scoutmaster and molesting children until he was pulled over for a brake light malfunction in 1994 driving a van full of boyscouts headed to a camping trip.

Police ran his license, and arrested him on the spot. That was the first indication to any parent under his “leadership” that Dykes was a convicted pedophile.

That’s correct, the failure on the part of the Boy Scouts to remove Dykes and or warn parents resulted in additional victims of this monster.

PROFILE OF A PREDATORY PEDOPHILE

Who: Timur Dykes, 53
Victims: Confessed to or was convicted of molesting more than 20 boys, most of them Boy Scouts.
First conviction: Arrested in 1983 on accusations of molesting several boys. Pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree sexual abuse and received probation.
Second conviction: Charged in 1985 with molesting boys. Pleaded guilty to first-degree sexual abuse and sexual penetration with a foreign object. His sentence is unclear.
Third conviction: Found guilty in 1994 after a nine-day trial in which several boys said he molested them. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison but was released in 2005.
Today: A registered sex offender and on post-prison supervision until 2013. Listed as a transient living at Southwest First Avenue and Burnside Street.

Update: Prior to the start of the Civil trial, Dykes moved to Oswego Lake in December 2009. He is currently a resident of Multnomah county and it is unclear when he moved or registered his return. He is listed “likely to reoffend” and a predator. (see editors note following this article)

DYKES LARGER THAN LIFE

Jack Doe, (press name for sex abuse victim) the 37 year old center of the lawsuit, considered Timur Dykes “larger than life.”

The victim, identified in court documents as Jack Doe, said he looked up to his Boy Scout leader, Timur Dykes, who was a rock climber and always seemed to have advice for whatever dilemma the boy found himself in. His relationship with Dykes, whom he first met through the Church of Latter-day Saints, intensified when he became a “Webelos” — the level after a Cub Scout — and as he earned full-fledged Boy Scout status, he said. He went on 30-plus campouts with Dykes as the leader, worked on merit badges at Dykes’ apartment, and spent the night several times at the grown man’s place.

Dykes was “larger than life,” Doe said. “I just wanted to soak up his knowledge.”

According to Clark, Dykes was 25 when he met a 9-year-old Doe in 1981. Later, Doe joined a Southeast Portland Scout troop where Dykes was an assistant Scoutmaster. The troop met at a building, in the 9900 block of Southeast Caruthers Street, owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The boys also often went to Dykes’ apartment to work on merit badges or spend the night, with their parents’ approval, Clark told jurors.

“All of the parents trusted Timur Dykes because he was a Scout leader,” Clark said.

The apartment, Clark said, was like a playground for boys.

“He had ferrets,” Clark said. “He had snakes, including a boa constrictor. … He had a knife collection. He gave (Doe) french fries for breakfast on a regular basis.”

One Question: Does he have a red eyed tree frog?

BOY SCOUT PERV FILES MUST BE PUBLIC

Because the files have been used in sealed cases due to confidential settlements, only 2 attorneys have seen their contents.

The BSA maintains they kept those files to “keep track” of their leaders with sexual allegations against them in the event they tried to move and join another region. However, there is NO evidence whatsoever that BSA notified police or parents of fellow members in the same troop if a leader was accused, or even if he was removed or reassigned.

What are the chances that an allegation that was made against one of their own, resulted in additional sex abuse to other or new victims?

Staggeringly high. Which is why they do not want them released to the public. The BSA reaction to the verdict in the civil suit, which will undoubtedly bring future suits:

“We are gravely disappointed with the verdict,” Boy Scouts of America spokesman Deron Smith said in a statement obtained by CBS News Raido. “We believe that the allegations made against our youth protection efforts are not valid. We intend to appeal.”

“This is a long standing societal issue that every youth serving organization must address,” Smith said. “Based on the standard of care of that time, the BSA believes it acted responsibly and that the evidence presented during the trial does not justify the verdict.”

Late this afternoon, the H E R C U L E A N search effort for Kyron involving over 18 different counties, was halted.

Kyron’s disappearance is now classified as a criminal investigation.

I would like to present a different thought for ponder on the serial pedophile status of the *free as a bird* Dykes and peyton perv files.

What if, within those files, which would include information on Dykes and his associates , there was a destination or possible suspect that has not been searched or an individual who was not arrested for abuse because it was not reported?

An organization, founded on a position of public trust, has a responsibility to it’s public. I am floored.

There is positively no incentive outside of a moral one for the BSA to produce those files for Law Enforcement review if it leads to further negligence suits on their part.

Repeat after me Multnomah County: Investigative subpoena for cause.

You won’t get a second bite at this apple for a long time.

The blinkoncrime staff would like to express our admiration and support to the Multnomah County Sheriffs Office and the men and women involved in the search efforts for Kyron Horman. You are heroes for Kyron.

We would also like to extend our deep regret and sorrow to Kyron’s family: know that you walk among friends.

To Timur the Timid:

Mark 9:42
” And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.”

    Blink,
I have ound no information on whether Kyron’s parents or stepparents are Mormon? I think it would be highly doubtful that Timur Van Dykes is involved in this i they are not members. Part of the MO of these offenders is to gain the trust of parents THROUGH the church connection.
There is a young boy in my extended family who was a victim of this type of predator. I have to tell you that people outside of his immediate family (Both from inside and outside the church) were VERY concerned about the behavior they saw and brought this to the attention of the family on multiple occasions (Single man taking young boys on trips alone to dineyland should raise a red flag in any parent’s mind). However, this was allowed to continue in my opinion BECAUSE of his position in the church as a member in good standing.
The fact that the press conference was held in a different church and the fact that Terri graduated from a Christian school other than BYU leads me to belive that they are not members. I think it would be highly unlikely that Kyron’s family would have significant association with a guy like Timur Van Dyke if they are not members and threrefore, unlikely he would have access to him to be considered a family friend.
I agree that it is sounding like he went with someone he knew. I just don’t think the family would have a close association with him if they are not members.
Along those lines, the bahavior of the Church in this regard is often baffeling to me. Their appeal as an organazation is their strong belief and support in family ties and I think they often let their need to forgive overcome the common sense that pedophiles are incurable.

I appreciate your thoughts mommystop, but Timur was excommunicated 20 years ago, and he lured victims from several different areas, not just the church. He has had at least 20 known victims from different areas and one thing we need to be clear on, is these guys are precisionists when it comes to learning to befriend kids, of any religious persuasion.

  2. mommystop says:

The fact that he was excommunicated changes things and I agree with you that it’s more of a possiblity now. It wasn’t clear that the church had excommunicated him. Members of the church are so involved that I find that predators not excommunicated from the church have little time to find victims outside of this circle.

I think with so many victims it is a telling failure of our judicial system that this man is out of prison or a mental institution regardless if he is involved in this situation or not. There should be no second chances with pedophiles who have such a clear cut case of multiple vicitms from day one.

Absolutely, which victim is going to affect the right person to give a shit, exactly?

I am raw. In recent studies, I had to study decomposition on a child as it effects a crime scene.
I openly admit I had separation issues and from a forensic perspective it was invaluable, from a Mom/analyst perspective I wished I could gauge my own eyes out.

Ugh. These child abductions are so painful to watch. It is a living hell, right before our eyes. Please lay off the parents in this case, friends. If the police thought they were suspects, I think we would have learned it by now. Also, it is important to note that Facebook posts are notoriously unreliable. Facebook times are off and those ridiculous farmville, etc programs run themselves while you are away from the computer once you authorize them.
Re going to the gym post, going to the gym actually seems like a really healthy way to deal with stress. It also might have been a way to let people know where she is in case someone called with information. And it also indicates that she might be facebook friends with a suspect.

  4. Angela_nw says:

I found the current address of Van Dykes and it is what I would call Portland “downtown” (near the waterfront).
The press conference was held at the church across the street from Skyline School, Brooks Hill Historic Church, which is listed as non-denominational on its website, and also listed as 20 miles from downtown Portland. As I think Sweetpea stated, this would be a long 20 miles, lots of traffic getting in/out of town.
I also read somewhere that there was a sign posted prior to that Friday in front of the school announcing that there was going to be the science fair from 8-10 a.m. on that date. Because it is a relatively remote area, I would guess that the perp is someone who drives by there and was aware that there would be this activity with lots of people around.

No doubt I agree this Timur VD should be locked away and throw away the key and strung up by his privates along with all the other SO’s but I think this situation would have to be more localized IMO.

Blink, my apologies. I see you had posted scripture in your blog. I’ve been reading, reading, reading, processing every emotion. Clearly, I’m not in the right frame of mind to be posting comments. Please forgive my over sight and foreseeable hate and venom I will be spewing on child killers and molesters.

How this cannot be recognized as a world wide epidemic alarms the crap out of me. Our leaders MUST step up. The same leaders who also parent and protect their own families. Asking for tougher laws isn’t enough. There MUST be laws put into place that take away every priviledge these parasites are accustomed too. PERMANENT LOCK UP in unholy conditions. OBAMA, HARPER…..it’s time to get real. What a shame. What an effin blatant crying shame and mispresentation of leaders who claim to have our children’s best interests at heart.

    I WANT OUR WORLD BACK!

Blink, from reading your comments, it sounds like you do not believe that little Kyron is with us anymore, is that correct? Or is there still hope for him?

With deep respect to little man, but *BIG* Scientist Kyron, I believe he is deceased, and has been, since June 4th.

  11. TR says:

LE continues to state that parents need not fear for their childrens’ safety based on this crime–which tells me they definitely have this person but not Kyron. There’s no other way to take such a statement. They must have him under constant surveillance until they can bring him in.

  12. Boz says:

Dumb question of the day. Does anyone know how to properly pronounce little Kyron’s name? Is it Keyron, Kieron, ???

    KIE-RON.

However, to confuse you further, RON sounds like Run when pronounced quickly.

    Er Go, KIE- RUN.

Do you have any idea on how LE are focusing on Sauvie Island? Is it because it the closest body of water,or do you believe they have specific information? Also,a school employee would likely know not only attendance policies but also the fact that the school lacked security cameras. Of course, they would also be capable of fooling kyron and luring him to a vehicle outside.

    This case haunts me.

Something isn’t sitting right. For someone to just waltz in and take a child seems hard to believe (though not impossible) as sueK says, unless the boy *knew* the person. Or maybe he was wearing a uniform and gained the boy’s trust that way.

Similarly odd, if it was an employee of the school, someone that Kyron knew, then it would seem easy to identify who was missing from work that morning.

We know this child couldn’t have just disappeared. Schools are busy places during morning drop-off but once the bell rings, the hallways vacate very quickly. Whoever lured little Kryon would have to have known that upon the morning bell not only would the hallways be emptied but the teacher would presumably notice that the boy was absent.

Plus, with all the classroom windows facing out, how could someone feel brazen enough to escort a child out with so many potential witnesses?

I have a sick feeling in my stomach that wonders if he might have been held somewhere inside.

This is a parent’s worse nightmare and I feel for them.

    Hi Blink,
I agree with you regarding BSA opening those files to LE. I was as shocked as anyone when I first heard of this lawsuit and the details. I don’t know how long the BSA has had these new rules in place, I can only attest to the last 4 years that we have been involved. Also, I truly think it matters on the leadership and the depth of leadership. We started out in a new troop that was semi disorganized. We changed to a new one that was well established and I can tell you the differences are huge! But anyway, I am not posting to defend the BSA and their actions in the past. I just want little Kyron found and pray that he is alive and that this POS had nothing to do with his disappearance. But in all honesty, nothing would surprise me at this point. How sad is that?

Thank you for keeping us informed of the details and your insight is surely appreciated. I and many others here, I am sure feel helpless and are glad to have a place we can vent or share our thoughts without condemnation.

    Stars,
Unfortunately, if it was a school employee it would be easy to lure a child off campus. I use to teach and I often had kids help me unload stuff from my car. I taught high school so it’s a bit different, but I know that within a school’s culture there is trust among kids and adults. What’s amazing to me is that sick people continue to gain access to schools despite their pasts. School employees should all be put under a microscope before they have access to children and even then caution and common sense should still be exercised.

  34. Sweetpea says:

I also believe that there must be some form of cell ping involved with Sauvie Island. My husband and I spend a lot of time there, funny I’ve never seen any nude sun bathing, but we kind of gravitate to the same beach whenever we are there.

I must say it is normally a fairly busy place. It is not a very big island, the size attracts a lot of bicyclist due to the fact that they can circle the whole island in a couple of hours, its more of a long narrow place with lots of marina’s and house boats on the south side (kind of a water way) and the Columbia River on the north side where the public beaches are located.

However, we have been experiencing some pretty crappy weather for sometime now. Lots and lots of rain, so the island (other than the few homes) would probably have been pretty sparse around the time Kyron went missing.

It would probably take a person about 30 minutes to travel between the school and Sauvie Island.

    Article is dated April 13th!
Portland, Ore (AP) – Jurors on Tuesday found the Boy Scouts of America negligent and awarded $1.4 million to a former Portland man who was abused by an assistant Scoutmaster in the early 1980s, following a three-week trial in which secret Scout “perversion files” were used as evidence.

Sooo…Could this be the trigger? It sure has me thinking, especially with Kyron missing 2-3 weeks later!

Pffffft! Oregon, I’d really like to know WHY you’ve allowed a self-admited serial sex offender to remain on your frickin streets! OMGosh!
