Kyron Horman Missing and Endangered: Grand Jury Meets, Indictment Imminent

Portland, OR- In the case of missing 7-year-old Portland child Kyron Horman, developments today continue to unfold at lightening speed.

During a poorly-kept secret convening of a special grand jury that is in session today, sources inside the investigation believe it’s triers of fact will return an indictment against Terri Horman and possibly one other individual.

It is however, unclear as to whether or not the grand jury is hearing evidence in the alleged murder for hire plot MCSO informed Kaine Horman his wife had master-minded, OR evidence surrounding the disappearance of Kaine and Desiree Young’s son Kyron.

KOIN caught Terri Horman’s friend DeDe Spicher, who was subpoenaed to appear in the proceedings this morning, on video with her attorney, entering the courthouse. Spicher was the subject of a public plea asking her to cooperate with investigators by Kaine Horman and Desiree Young last week.  A neighbor of Spicher’s has confirmed the FBI has been seen removing boxes and unknown bagged material from her residence.

According to several sources, DeDe Spicher, Terri’s roommate  post Kaine’s restraining order,  was working in a garden near the Horman home the day of Kyron’s disappearance when she received a call at approximately 11:15 am. She left abruptly, returning at approximately 1:00 pm. DeDe was unreachable on her cell phone during that time and the property owner became concerned. Spicher is a long time friend and workout companion of Horman’s.

Earlier today, Laura Rackner, Kaine Horman’s Family Law attorney filed a motion to find out where the funds are coming from to foot the bill for Terri Horman’s high profile criminal defense attorney, Stephen Houze.

In Horman’s motion, he is seeking the disclosure of the payments made to Houze, and whether or not it came from marital funds. If it has, Kaine Horman wants half the cash to pay his own legal bills. Kaine Horman alleges that Terri Horman disclosed to a third party that she paid a whopping $350,000 retainer to Houze, however, provided no proof of same in the papers filed today.

In what appears to be a media timing coup, tonight’s episode of Dateline NBC will feature Kaine Horman, Desiree and Tony Young, with interviews and coverage of Kyron’s disappearance.

Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer, Mary Lindstrand, has announced a press conference tomorrow at the MCSO Training Facility, beginning at 2:00 pm PST.

Here the mother dropped the child off at the school/church, watched her enter the building, then some seedy creep tried to abduct the little girl by telling her class was cancelled. And I can see how in that kind of environment (Saturday Sunday School) a child would look up to an adult and follow direction. Good thing this little girl realized something was wrong soon enough.

Child escapes attempted abduction in Perth Amboy

A 9-year-old girl escaped an attempted abduction this morning after an unknown man grabbed her on her way to church classes in Perth Amboy.

The girl’s mother told police she dropped her daughter off at the gymnasium at St. Mary’s School on Mechanic Street around 11 a.m. and watched the girl walk down the steps and into the school, said Police Chief Michael Kohut.

The child was walking down the hallway to class when she was stopped by a man who told her the classes were canceled, Kohut said. The man then grabbed the child and took her to the church, Kohut said.

The girl told police she was screaming and fighting the man off as he took her down to the church basement. The man may have been spooked by all the screaming, because he ran out of the church, Kohut said.

Some say that Kyron is alive, and stashed somewhere.. we all hope he is alive, well and found soon.

But with each passing day of not finding him, not any closer to finding him, my heart sinks a bit more.

“Hoping for the best, bracing for the worst”

People can’t imagine anyone harming Kyron – even finding it hard Terri could do something to Kyron. But then think again: How many mom’s do you know out there that would think of MFH (for whatever reason), or go sexting off like Terri did while under the current circumstances? Or worry about her hair when your child is missing?

Yea, with each passing day, I am slowly bracing myself for the worst – for me it will be like the deaths in our family from those dying of a slow cancer sickness, knowing what the end result will be- but I still get shocked with the death news and bawl my head off.

Given that cell phones are independent of people, any person could give their cell phone to another person, and generate a ping that would make it appear as if they had been in a given area, while they may not have been there at all. Many have speculated that Terri Horman frequented real/true crime websites and watched shows such as CSI, which would reasonably lead to the belief that she knew or should have known that her cell phone would ping (even if she didn’t make a call) from locations that she went to. Considering that her pal went off the radar for the same period of time, and that there is some account of Terri at 24 hr, I suspect that she may have given her cell phone to her friend, and had it driven to Sauvie, in order to create a diversion (as a decoy). I have been contemplating this for the past couple of weeks. Today, I read an account given by one of Spicher’s friends, where she allegedly stated that she was “at work” and “forgot her phone.” That underscores the fact about being able to ping in one location, while actually being in another. Who knows where Terri was, even though her phone may have pinged at Sauvie.

If Kyron is located in a different location, I would be willing to bet that the phone had been handed off to someone (even if temporarily). If Kyron is found near the pings, she may have been foolish enough to have the phone with her, and presume that they couldn’t get pings unless she used the phone.

If I (in some parallel universe) were going to commit some sort of heinous crime (God forbid), I sure wouldn’t take my cell phone with me, and if I wanted to stay in communication with my contacts, etc…, I would probably use a throw away (pre-paid phone).

Suppose: It would be easy for one of the landscapers at Skyline on June 4 lured Ky away on a pretext. Grabbed him; quieted him; sexually assaulted him onsite, then killed him onsite. Early the morning of the Science Fair (the hours of which had been, conveniently, posted outside the school).

Later, say around 1 pm when kids were at the talent show, removed Ky’s body in an opaque container of a type commonplace in his work. (If you prefer, Ky could’ve been removed alive; sexually assaulted or not; killed or not. But removed from school.)

For weeks this has been rolling around in my head. The problem I have is fitting it into the info. we may–or may not–have that TH has some knowledge of this. And at what point she gained it. That day? Later?

She might have seen the perp’s truck while she was driving around. He might have looked at her the wrong way (it’s happened) and she might have pursued him awhile. Or not.

It does look as if there was some suspicious activity in their neighborhood this spring. I think her LS-lover might’ve been stalking her. OR, Kyron. Perhaps he did threaten her.

Maybe her only part in this was inadvertently involving the perp in Ky’s life. Thinking LS was interested in her sexting and naively missing that it was Ky he wanted. Or, maybe LS swung many ways.

We have 2 suspects, perhaps, in jail already. One may be only a witness (well, both with immigration status legal problems); the other the perp. Do we need any additional ones for the actual commission of the crime?

RE: #16 Julie’s comment on August 2, 2010 at 1:48 pm re the local (Portland, OR) two part story in the Oregonian about Who Killed Mona (1962)…I saw that too. Cheap shot on part of The Oregonian. How horrible to have that appear at this time during the Kyron Horman case. It could have waited until a later date to appear in print. Shame on them. What purpose did it really have? Just to upset the parents, families of Kyron?
    Julie, what did you think?

    ———-

I wondered about the timing of the story myself. After reading it though, I no longer question the timing for a lot of reasons. Mona’s mom and dad are elderly now, my guess would be pushing 80 years. How much longer will they have left to share memories of their daughter and relay their story? The articles also shed light some on the behind the scenes work of LE. They showed the heart somewhat within LE. I think this might help people better understand the work that LE is doing behind the scenes on our little Kyron. LE has gotten a bad rap regarding the Kyron Horman case. Maybe these articles will make people understand a little better what LE does behind the scenes. I also think reading Mona’s story could help motivate people who are not coming forward with knowledge or any info into Kyron’s disappearance. Reading about what this family went through for over 45 years, just awful, may motivate anyone with info to bring it forward now. I think there were probably multiple reasons for the appearance of “What Happened to Mona”. The above are just a few of my thoughts.

@ Titch, good work connecting the two different gyms to one owner. It is likely that they could go to both with one membership. But it would be interesting to find out how often (or if ever) the farther one was attended by Terri. Also, if there weren’t any cameras at these gyms, and a red haired lady about the same age as Terri showed up and checked Kiara in to the child care center with Terri’s gym membership card, who would know it wasn’t Terri if she never frequented that gym?
@ FLGirl, I agree there could be some alibi set up happening at the gym if they were unfamiliar with Terri at the new one. Some say there is a resemblance and although it is superficial, if someone were asked to describe Terri Horman they could also be describing DeDe in a general way. At any rate, it could be another piece of the puzzle.
I hope Blink has some of her connections researching this…

It would be interesting to know her time line for June 3rd, wouldn’t it?

@Iyla (again!)(You have good thoughts…)–giving her the benefit of the doubt, let’s just say she did forget her cell phone. I have always thought it was odd that neither her co-gardener or the person she was working for knew where she spent that time. How strange to leave a job and not say where you are going or when you will be back (I’m assuming that one–maybe she did tell them how long she’d be gone), or not say where you’ve been when you return. Strange that she didn’t lie, at least! How easy would it have been to say that she went home for lunch?? Glad she did not think that quickly or carefully.

$50K Reward Brings In New Tips In Kyron Horman Case

    POSTED: 2:22 pm PDT August 2, 2010
    UPDATED: 2:35 pm PDT August 2, 2010
PORTLAND, Ore. — Multnomah County sheriff’s deputies said they’re receiving five to 10 tips every hour after raising the reward amount to $50,000 in the disappearance of 7-year-old Kyron Horman.
Deputies said Monday they’re working closely with the district attorney’s office and the family to “bring Kyron home.” But they released no new information about their investigation.

In a written statement, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said the case requires the police agencies “to conduct portions of the investigations in a manner that cannot be released to the public.”

I know that she was not questioned, but I am of the opinion that has to do with a last minute deal she made to work with LE. If that was not fruitful, expect to see her there this week.

As a regular person that totally feels for Kyron and his family, as a mom of two toddlers, I cannot understand or fathom how somebody can do this. I do believe TH is involved. 100% I do. Obviously, we are not dealing with a normal person (TH) here. So my question is, WHAT? WHAT in anyway could be done, said, or??? I don’t know.. WHAT could possibly appeal to TH that would make her talk? What could press her buttons? WHAT – if anything – could trigger some sort of heartfelt emotion in her?

I, like many people, would be screaming at the top of my lungs proclaiming my innocence if I were innocent. And I sure as heck would be doing anything and everything I could to find Kyron if I cared for him. And I am pretty sure I would be just barely be able to keep focused and try to keep life moving while still trying to deal with that grief over a missing child, I SURE AS HECK would not be “sexting” somebody! That would be the last thing on my mind!!

I guess, I would like to know, with personalities like TH, WHAT could possibly trigger some emotion in her?

Much love to you Kyron. I think about you everyday. And, every day my 3 year old and I ask God to bring you home.

Could she have killed an innocent child due to misdirected anger at her ungrateful husband? Does the expression “maybe she hated Cindy more than she loved Caylee” ring any bells here? Did TH hate KH more than she loved Kyron?

  20. MackiezMom says:

@Sue- Sociopaths do not view people in the way that most humans do. They see people as tools. Yes, I can see how once a tool has worn out it’s usefulness, one might throw it away. Or how if a sociopath knew that destroying something would cause their intended victim pain, they could do harm to a child. I don’t think there is an explanation for a person who is not a sociopath or psychotic having the capacity to murder a child that, particularly one they knew and lived with since he was a toddler. I can see how someone who slipped into psychosis during war might do that, or how someone who was psychotic due to drug use might do that, but not because of “misplaced anger.” And if it was “misplaced anger,” then there is the implication that she had the capacity to kill, but “took it out on the wrong person.”
If she had anything to do with this, she didn’t love Kyron. She might have loved using Kyron as a tool. She might have found him beneficial, for some time.

@Mary- I heard the same initial account, myself. Now one of her friends allegedly told an interviewer that she was at work, and forgot her phone. I’ll post the link later…on my way out.

@MackiezMom: with you on the answer to Sue. JMO: Kyron was just a playing piece on the monopoly board of THs life; she needed to use him to get in the game (win Kaine over) and when she had a new plan for winning, she didn’t need Kyron any more. Besides, if women just went a little nutsy and killed children because of ungrateful husbands, there’d be a lot more children dead, I’m guessing.

I also think TH is getting off on all the control she has by not talking. She must love seeing KH and DY writhing in emotional pain, and knowing that she (TH) controls it and could stop it *if* she wanted to. If.

I’ve been reading here for quite some time and this is one of the most informative sites for the most up-to-date information on current crimes, especially the ones committed against our children. Just want to say great job to Blink, and briefly comment on my experience with being a stepmom. I can’t even begin to fathom how anyone could hurt this adorable little boy Kyron, let alone possibly at the hands of his stepmother. My life has been blessed with 3 children, two I gave birth to and one little boy that came to us in a very unexpected and eventful way. My husband had a brief relationship before we met and seven years later we found out a beautiful little boy was born as a result. She never told my husband of her pregnancy, never told him of the birth of their son. She claimed she didn’t know who the father was at the time, and only when she needed financial support after her current boyfriend left was when she decided to have a paternity test done. He came to live with us after the state removed him from her custody for severe abuse. That was almost 9 years ago. Has it been a bumpy road? You betcha. But I love this little boy, well he’s a teenager now but he’ll always be my little boy. If Terri Horman hurt Kyron or is responsible for where ever he is now, and my gut instinct tells me she’s involved, then she is an evil monster and deserves no mercy. Not all stepmom’s are wicked like in the fairytales, sometimes there are happy endings. I hope and pray there is one for sweet Kyron and his parents.

Q: just in the case that a predator may have taken Kyron, are there available statistics regarding abductions from schools that are not custodial related? Curious. I do believe Terri is responsible for this, I think a parent’s lack of interest in searching for a missing child is the biggest flag. Just wondering if there are stats available for this sort of thing.

  37. minima says:

Now DeDe’s friends(one of whom I know) are speaking out in defense of her. Knowing a mutual friend of dede’s makes me want to believe she is not involved at all…just being the good friend dede’s friends claim her to be…but then I think this is the layer upon layer of denial that can hinder the investigation. Person B doesn’t want to believe person A is responsible, Person C doesn’t want to beleive that Person B knows anything and on and on into a murky water of peoples character analysis… Friends even go on to state that Dede wouldn’t have been with TH (living with her for 10 days!) if she believed TH was involved in Kyron’s disappearance. Which sounds to me like they are somehow making an absolute statement about TH’s innocence, well, here I get the layers of denial and can’t quite jump the fence one way or the other of Dede’s involvment. But saying this, to me, goes a little too far. It’s a statement assuming that DeDe is knows nothing, which means there is nothing to know. Which makes all these defensive comments to me nothing more than “what people want to believe” statements.

However, on the one hand we criticize people for not defending themselves, but if they do, they aren’t coorperating, or are smug, or a list of other negative attributes we can ascribe them. I seriously don’t know what’s going on in this case anymore! But I do think that TH is a master manipulator (and guilty) and it is POSSIBLE (just as possible as Dede knowing something) that this Dede person is one of those people that sees the best in others and really isn’t involved in TH’s malice. Maybe she is just easily manipulated or very loyal to her friend. Or maybe DeDe really needs to be needed.

Denial is pretty powerful stuff, but figuring out who is innocently suffering from it or is so in effort to protect themselves isn’t but people just need to state the facts! The media does set the stage for a persons character to be attacked and we feed into that here, hoping for answers, but in the end a what we think we know about person’s character doesn’t matter, the facts do, kyron does. I understand wanting to defend and dissect anyone and everyone involved, and emotions rule such cases, that’s what gets people involved but it also seems to be what hinders the case. I don’t care who DeDe is, what she would or wouldn’t do – I just want the facts out and those that may have them to be forthcoming. I just want Kyron found and wish that was everyone’s focus.

  38. Midwest Mom says:

Did these co-workers submit their concern about dede when Kyron first went missing and dede questioned at that time? Or did LE question them a couple a weeks ago when the family was imploring her to cooperate?

Sorry if I missed this mentioned somewhere. I can’t help thinking why 2 people remembered the details regarding dede if it happened 6 week earlier. Cathy Bickel-
I don’t read over there at the Oregon live site as I couldn’t read more than 10 posts before I got nauseated from the way they talk there. I didn’t notice that the comments weren’t there. I guess I can go see if I can’t get to them?

    Barista!-
Thanks so much for the smile. you said it better than I could.
I am sooooo tired of all of the initials, it is not only lazy, it is very frustrating to keep the flow in reading, especially when you get essays on here. They act like it is another site where you will get a time out for NOT USING INITIALS. we dont have to do that here, Blink and most of us can read FULL WORDS believe it or not… lol

    Lily and Blink-
Yes it does say what this Grand jury is about and I am glad they went today but wondering why they didn’t go sooner? and why will it not end for 4 to 6 weeks? come on now.

Talking with some LE friends this past weekend, no one saw any problem with the possibility of a stranger grabbing Kyron at school. I said, well it’s possible that there was someone working on the school grounds, who knew him. And he could have lured Kyron to a more private area at school, and grabbed him. They all said, “Well, no problem then. Easy, especially for a man with a small child.

They all thought that a sexual assault and/or murder could have also occurred on the school grounds, especially given the chaos that day.

Wasn’t Ky’s classroom at the opposite end of the school from where the science fair, and later the talent show were?

Also, the newly paved service road I believe runs near a school door and then out to Skyline Blvd.

It might help to take this together with my previous post with the FBI training material info. and consider the actual perpetrator as a male who Kyron knew. Perhaps a landscaper. Remember, Terri might not have acted the way you’d expect, but IF one of the landscapers did this, how would he be acting when you started asking him questions???

I’m calling it a night. Maybe someone can look back at Blink’s previous comments and the landscapers and shift their thinking a bit in this direction. Both of the landscaper candidates are locked up right now; Terri is not.

Here’s a link regarding Grand Jury service in Oregon. It’s rare, I think, but possible to take so long interviewing and going through evidence that it could take the whole month and continue with a new GJ. Just thought if you were out of state, you might like to know the possible timeline. We all want things to move quickly, but all we can really do is breeeeathe and hang in there.

    http://www.oregon.gov/Multnomah/General_Info/Jury_Service/Length_of_Service.page
Your term of service is for one day or until the trial you are selected for is over, whichever is longer. If you are selected to be on a jury for a trial that lasts longer than one day, your service lasts to the end of the trial. Please be aware that many trials will last longer than one day. You may also sit on more than one trial in the one-day period. If you are selected for a grand jury (a small number of individuals may be selected for these), your service will be for one month.

@beejay, holy cow you thought of the worst possible scenario…the only problem I see with it is that it doesn’t really involve Terri, in which case she would have just gone home after the science fair or somewhere that she would be seen, to have an alibi. Instead she was MIA for a period of time after she left the school. She’s got to be more involved than you are saying in your scenario. We have definitely been through the “removed from school in a container” thing way back there somewhere. It seems like someone would have noticed a person dragging a large container out, whether you could see inside it or not. I don’t think that many people brought their science projects in containers large enough for a child, since most of the project boards could be folded (dioramas?). Anyway, just sayin because I would like to poke holes in your theory because I don’t want that to be what happened to him.

You know , reviewing back to the time that Terri was told to leave the house ~I wonder sometimes if that was a mistake..she is now displaced from the crime ,living in Roseburg ~At least at home, she had to walk by Kyrons room and see him & the memories in every room and drive the streets that she probably took the day this terrible crime was commited and have to REMEMBER~!Easy for a sick person like her to sort of shut the door to the wickeness of her terrible deeds or knowledge she has ~At least she might still feel some conviction~ but I almost forgot ~ she isnt a normal feeling person~!!!!

Blink, re: the FB picture change. I figured I should post a link so I went back to get the link, and can’t find it. I saw it. I saw the photo of TH cropped in the same sombrero photo, but now I can’t find the link, so if you don’t want to post my post above, i understand. I should’ve included the link when I found it and made the comment (head hanging in shame now because I know better). My apologies.
