Susan Powell Search: Unidentified Remains Found

Posted by BOC Staff | Josh Powell,Michael Powell,Steven Powell,Susan Powell | Wednesday 14 September 2011 5:12 pm

Topaz Mountain, Utah-  In a search effort today,  based solely on intelligence gained by recent warrants served on Joshua Powell,  the husband of missing Utah woman Susan Powell,  human remains have been located.

Cadaver dog teams were utilized this afternoon, and confirmed positive alerts in an area Josh Powell is known to “rock hunt”.

The waiting game begins,  the remains could not be identified as that of a man or woman, and the medical examiner is enroute.   Abc4 , who had been invited by the search effort,  was subsequently restricted from the crime scene upon recovery.

Chuck  Cox,  father of Susan Cox Powell,  said he believes police are close to completing their investigation in this case and it is due for a break, but stopped short of confirming if he believes are the remains of his daughter.

“I absolutely believe they have a specific reason for being there.”

I clumsily used a snippet of your post as a segue to my comment. I wasn’t reacting to your statement per se, but a bushel basket of what I strongly believe to be misguided kudos that I’ve seen around lately. I assure you that I hate very few. I’ll let you to ponder the irony of your use of the word in response to me.

I would assert however that calling a spade a spade does not necessarily constitute hate per say but instead often judgment, expectation, critique and assignment of responsibility.

I too have career, family, responsibilities. Perhaps that is why I have followed this case since the first day Ms. Powell went missing and only now chose to comment. I would have let my singular comment stand as-is for the next year absent your response in regards my intent. Clearly you also feel, as I do, an obligation to our youngest victims in this world or you wouldn’t be here reading my inelegant interjections.

I have a familiarity with law enforcement and the law which makes my input relevant to these pages. Readers may choose to consider, or ignore as they see fit.

I am almost in every case, an unfailing supporter of LE. I could write a three page defense of the West Memphis Police for the page next door. I have written at length in defense of LE in other cases on these very pages. However I feel very strongly that some authority within the WVPD botched the critical initial conduct of this investigation and the repercussions continue to this day. I am virtually certain that the majority of the WVPD, patrol, detective, otherwise, could have conducted the necessary and timely in a responsible manner and closed this case in very little time and with little cost. I believe same would have resulted in a different and vastly preferable living situation for this woman’s children. That is the real consequence of the delay in this prosecution. I further believe that purposeful inaction by the authorities within the WVPD hindered the capacity for rapid closure in this case. I do not believe that this hindrance was conducted for the purpose of obstructing the investigation but instead the result of what goes for political and religious correctness, and a reluctance to conduct aggressive police work (read fear of lawyers – a pendulum of which we have allowed too far a swing) which frequently impacts law enforcement activity by some agencies. My post was ever so slightly tongue-in-cheek. Methinks you thought that bump in my jowl was my mis-shapen head. I forgive you.

I believe the WVPD is obligated to salvage this case despite their unfortunate handling early on. I continue to be very concerned with my observation of some of their activity in that regard.

I do not hate West Valley City. Been there many a time. Some (or at least one) of my best friends are from there. Instead I hope the fine residents of that hamlet pay very close attention to how law enforcement is conducted in their community and demand better.

I feel strongly. Maybe you noticed.

Sorry I didn’t articulate better my frustration. Again my apology for offending you – I clearly should have foreseen your interpretation.

Oh, and the things I hate? Joseph Duncan, Ralph Menzies, Nathanial Bar Jonah, John Couey, political correctness, moral cowardice, not too keen on Josh and Freak,

but not a single wildflower, weeds notwithstanding.

My opinion only. B will tell ya, I could be wrong.

Awww. Now that is a proper and well-oiled splanation. I keep a WD-40 pen in my office for just these moments, lol. Thank you and your perfectly normal noggin.

You are not wrong, and given the mess up at Topaz, well, let’s just say I am pulling for WVPD to win this one in spite of themselves. Adding John McRae to your list of ghouls.

Sorry – can we just point out the obvious? If the father has come out and stated on national TV that he had a sexual relationship in nature with his daughter in-law…um, if you were Josh, wouldn’t you be like, F You and never speak to him again and take your kids and go somewhere?

Yet the continue to live in the same house. Not even getting in to any sort of murder or body, just the simple revelation that the father did have feelings for his wife.

So yes, I think this is an extremely dysfunction, disturbed situation, with Josh being completely brainwashed by his own father. He genuinely is under his fathers control in terms of his mind. And now, he has been brainwashed in to “protecting” his father.

Its just a HUGE red flag.

I mistakenly perceived you were both on a cyber bandwagon to personally attack me for my benign comment, and for that, I apologize. All good I hope. :)

I will say that I agree with you both that this case is very, very frustrating.

I check the headlines as often as I can praying that they have made an arrest and taken those innocent little boys away from the monsters raising them. When the news came that they found human remains I was so hopeful that there would be closure and justice for Susan. What are these charred wood pieces from?
One thing for sure, It truly sickens me that those two little boys will one day hear that their grandfather said their missing (or most likely murdered by their Father) Mother was “sexual” with him. My heart breaks that soon they will be old enough to understand how utterly disgusting these lies being told are about their Mommy. I also am appalled to see Josh using the children as his shield from answering any real questions, saying, “I have to go now, my boys need me”. when the reality is those boys need their Mother.
At the end of the day, whether we agree or disagree on how LE is handling the case is irrelevant, we all want the very exact same thing, for Susan Powell to be found and justice to be served. This case touches us all in some way. Peace <3

  10. Riverpearl says:

On Saturday, officials concluded their dig of an area they originally suspected was a disturbed grave site. Four days of digging resulted in the removal of roughly 100 pieces of what appeared to be charred wood.

Once the pieces were removed from the 2½-foot-deep hole, cadaver dogs stopped indicating there was something still in the hole. The dogs originally led police to the area, suggesting there was human decomposition in the area.

It’s now up to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine why 11 dogs trained to detect human decomposition zeroed in on the wood pieces and whether they have anything to do with Powell’s disappearance on Dec. 6, 2009.

Police say the charred pieces likely came in contact with either blood, decomposing flesh or clothing that contained some of that material.

About 125 personnel from police agencies throughout the state are combing the vast desert area on ATV’s and on horseback. Police say it is the largest effort yet to find the mother of two who disappeared nearly two years ago in 2009. While nothing new has turned up, police say the search will continue at least through Wednesday.

“This area is fairly large in nature, there’s a lot of ground to cover, and if we were to try and attempt to cover it by ourselves we would here for a significant amount of time,” said West Valley City Police Sgt. Mike Powell, no relation to Susan. “Every much longer than we have been already.”
    http://www.fox13now.com/news/kstu-susan-powell-efforts-ramp-up-in-search-for-susan-powell-at-topaz-mountain-20110919,0,6802902.story

West Valley City police Lt. Bill Merritt said teams will cover the rugged, rocky terrain near Topaz Mountain in Juab County Tuesday on foot, horseback, ATV and by helicopter. A team of dogs trained to detect the scent of a decomposing human body will also be on hand, police Sgt. Mike Powell said.

Since Saturday, crews from five county sheriff’s offices have joined the search and a sixth was scheduled to be added on Tuesday, said Mike Powell, who is not related to the Powell family.

Police haven’t said specifically what they are looking for but have recovered numerous items, including blankets and clothing, all of which is being documented and removed for a closer look, Mike Powell said.

“Anything we find is being documented, photographed in place and the GPS coordinates are being marked so that we have that information in case we need to go back,” he said.

Merritt says that over eight days, searchers have covered more than 50 square miles.
    http://www.localnews8.com/news/29243941/detail.html

“Common sense would tell us if we are looking for a body, it’s not going to be this far from the road,” Merritt said. “But common sense doesn’t always play a role in all of the cases we investigate.”

“We find clues and evidence all the time, things that don’t always make a lot of sense,” he said. “That’s why we are out here, and that’s why we are out here so far away from the road, and that’s why we are taking a look at everything.”

“Some of the things we look for out here, we look for any large or natural structures, boulders, trees, perhaps a ravine, anything that would be easy to conceal yourself as you’re carrying out your crime or conceal the body or evidence,” he said.

Searchers were also asked to report if they found bones that they couldn’t determine to be animal bones, or if they found blankets, clothing, a tarp or any “impression in the ground that looks a little bit odd.” A cadaver dog was dispatched to sites reported by searchers to see if there was anything of significance.

West Valley police say while a few searches like this have been known to the public, detectives have searched in this region of Utah many times since Susan Cox Powell disappeared. Dozens of searches have been carried out near Simpson Springs, where Josh Powell told police he went camping on the night his wife went missing.

“Common sense tells us we are off the road and there isn’t going to be anything out here, but if we have got the manpower to take a look at it, by all means, (we’ll) look at it and that way we can confirm this area is cleared.”

The search is expected to continue at least through Wednesday. Merritt said police will make a determination every day as to how much longer they’ll be searching the area.

DELTA — Searchers spent yet another day Tuesday looking for clues in the disappearance of Susan Cox Powell Tuesday in the remote area around Topaz Mountain.

But as of 3:30 p.m. searchers had not indicated they had found any item of significance.

At least eight different law enforcement agencies participated in the search as well as a private citizen with an airplane and at least one search dog.

If nothing is found by the end of Wednesday, police said they would evaluate whether to halt the search of the area.

Trying to dig a grave in frozen ground that is frozen a foot or more deep is going to require a pick and a lot of time or a gasoline powered post hole machine. Using a post hole machine to dig in rocky soil is a great way to break your forearm, if by yourself.

Josh may have taken the boys on a nightime trip as a distraction.

The father-in-law IMO was the one that removed the body and made the disposal. I think that Josh’s father very well knew Josh’s limitations and didn’t want him to know anything about what happened to Susan after she died.

IMO elder Powell needs to be taken in for a long period of questioning by someone who really has superior technique. LE needs to do all they can to track this man in the days following the disappearance.

  14. janetoo says:

Could a body burn underground, perhaps placed on smoldering chips in a shallow grave during a blizzard in the middle of the desert? I am simply thinking of back when I was a girl scout and we made food in the dutch oven, digging a hole, burning the coals and putting the pot on top and re-covering it and let it bake. For as long as this investigation has taken to get to where they are now, could a body have burned for a small time period without anyone around due to the weather, location, etc. After 2 years what didn’t burn at that time would have been taken by perhaps wild life, wind and such. Just wondering.

  15. janetoo says:

this too could explain Josh’s windburn, frostburn and possibly fire burn on his hands, etc.

Precisely! I think this is a case of a very controlling father, which is why Susan wanted to move away. It feels as though the father had much to say in this relationship. Josh has always comes across as someone who can’t think for himself. It makes sense knowing more about his creature father.

As my father in law would say (parental discretion is advised), this guy believes the sun rises and sets on his @$$hole.

I agree with you. I believe they were both in on Susan’s death. The elder took control of removing and hiding/destroying Susan’s body….and for something so sinister to go down, I have to wonder why both men felt the need to kill her. What hold did she have on Josh…or both of them?

  20. A Texas Grandfather says:

    deetee

You are correct in your response to janetoo. It takes a lot of oxygen to produce a fire hot enough to burn things.

All fires and explosions have to have two things to occur. A sufficient supply of oxygen and fuel that is combustable.

There is a techqique in the production of heavy crude that is known as fire flooding. The formation is supplied a rich source of oxygen by compression and then it is set on fire. The fuel is the heavy crude. There is more to this than this simple explanation, but the effect is to heat the crude to raise its viscosity to the point that pumps can move it to the surface.

When welders need to cut a piece of steel, they heat the metal to its melting point, then apply oxygen only. That makes the steel become the fuel and the cut proceeds across the area of the material.

  21. janetoo says:

Oxygen……I did forget that necessary ingredient. Thanks DeeTee and ATG (if I may call you that) :)

  22. Carol says:

Did I read somewhere that he had a generator in the vehicle? There’s his supply of power for whatever he used to dismember/burn her (god I hated writing that). What if he burnt her body for several hours in that hole and then took the remaining bones and discarded them someplace else. He could of dug that hole prior to the camping trip as someone else mentioned. And then dug another hole someplace else and put the bones in that hole. Or maybe he just got rid of her bones one at a time. Maybe he took them to Washington and buried them there.

I would also like to know the father-in-law’s whereabout prior to Susan missing.

I dispise these two. A lot.

  23. Phyllis says:

Did the police ever search Josh Powell’s vehicle. Did they search his dad’s vehicle and home. Well the DNA wouldn’t work because Susan’s DNA would be everywhere but perhaps other evidence. If this has already been explained don’t bother to post again. It’s nothing major. Thanks.

  24. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Ragdoll

Susan was a member of the LDS. Were Josh and the father-in-law members as well? I don’t have any information regarding their membership. We have to remember that the LDS people are basically broken into two groups that have different viewpoints regarding family. One supports polygamy and the other does not.

Under Utah law, polygamy is illegale. I have zero evidence of this, but I think this is why Susan was killed. IMO she was being forced by the father-in-law into a relationship she didn’t want. She threatened to expose him and the two Powells killed her because of it.

We must remember our history. The LDS people were forced out of every state in the US prior to moving to Utah Territory. When people of other religions moved into Utah and it was about to become a state, the majority of the people did not accept polygamy and state laws were made to prevent it.

As long a these LDS groups are allowed to exist, we will have women and some young boys who are abused and killed.

The states need to take steps to provide a safe haven for these abused people.

If I were investigating this case, I would approach it from this viewpoint.

  25. A Texas Grandfather says:

    janetoo

ATG is perfectly acceptable. The long handle is too much to type.

One more thing about fire. The ratio of fuel to oxygen is important. Too much of either prevents combustion.

  26. MJ says:

ATG~ your post about the LSD/polygamy angle is an idea I wanted to put out for discussion but held off. My thought was, even if it wasn’t in the strictest sense of dual husbands with Josh & Steve, maybe it was the loose idea that Susan was ‘property” available for sharing.

I think that the insular aspects of the religious community there aided perp(s) to have more time to get themselves under control so to speak after the crime. Josh appeared to have the unconditional love and support of the community despite the ridiculous version of events he cited. It seemed that everyone was sure that a good guy like josh wouldn’t do anything bad. I think their trust was in error.

I am curious if anyone here feels there may be a connection with the man who went missing a week after Susan. Steven Koecher, disappeared Dec. 13, 2009, and within two months, Steve Powell had “researched” and written a nine page presentation to LE about his theory of “abscondence”, and how Susan and Steven K. had most likely run away together.

Seems awfully handy how SP managed to “inform” LE about his theories-so soon after SK disappeared. Maybe poor SK had “help” disappearing! Very convenient to kill Susan and then blame this poor guy, who may have also been a victim of the Powell conspiracy.

I am bothered by how much that Steve Powell knows about the week of Steven K’s disappearance, including this: “In the week prior to his disappearance Koecher made a number of small meal purchases (about $3.00 each) with his debit card, including in Mesquite, NV on December 12.”

How in the hell does Steve Powell know this? It seems to me that would be LE privileged info only!

Where they’re looking for Susan presently, is there a body of water nearby? Is it possible her body was burned and her remains, thereafter, disposed in cold water? Wind gusts could easily blow ‘ashes’ (my apologies for being graphic).

    Just thinking out loud.

  34. Ragdoll says:

Again, sorry for my murder of posts.

15 degrees is about -10 C in Canada. Here, that’s considered relatively mild. Wind chill is usually not a factor at that temp (not unheard of)…BUT…the length of time a person spends outside in those conditions, is. Personally, experience growing up in the Great White North, I know at least an hour exposed to cold can leave facial cheeks cold and red. Hands in snow or cold water will definitely leave hands red and chapped!

In winter, with that temp, my son will be outside for hours. It’s considered almost mild….bearable. When’s he’s been outside for just an hour, he will have red cheeks, and chapped, red hands from playing in the snow (with no mittens on). Also, you don’t need wind gusts to leave skin red and dry if outside, improperly dressed, with red face and chappend hands. That temp will dry the skin quite easily….again, if exposed for an hour or more.

Josh had to be out there for longer than an hour, without proper winter clothes (scarf, not mitts, possibly no winter hat).

So happy LE continues their search for anything that may bring closure to this case. They are taking way more time than originally allotted, but I’m glad to see they aren’t leaving until they feel the entire area has been properly covered.

I read in a different news article where they were taking pictures of anything found “in place” and marking gps coordinates. In case any of these finds are later connected to Susan in the laboratory/analyses, they will be able to revisit the exact location of the find for further investigation.

Seems like LE are really stepping up their game in trying to solve this case.

LOL! You know what Virginia? Y’all have had some pretty nasty storms that we, in Alberta, haven’t had. I love it here, God bless this land….but you’re right about one thing, it can drop to -30 C for weeks. Summer is sacred in these parts! <3

Toby David was on my mind all day, yesterday. I don't even know much about the case (I know a police officer is dead). He should have taken the Alford plea.

Yes, the mini van was searched as was the home. Josh also rented a vehicle 2 days after Susan went missing. Also, he had put on a lot of mileage for a car he only needed for a day. Police haven’t determined where he went or why there were so many miles on rental used just for 24 hours.

Thank you Blink-I figured it needed review, as it was hooked to the Powell’s creepy website! Steve pretty much slammed everyone Susan knew, family or friend, in that nine page document. I wonder how LE reacted to it when they received their copy?

If Steve Powell was in that area around the time of Susan’s and Steve Koecher’s disappearances, it could certainly go in lots of new directions.

I hope everyone gets a chance to read the document and see what they think about Steve Powell’s “theories”.

I will never again be able to read the word “abscond”, without thinking of his rambling!

Am right now watching Steven Powell as he’s being walked into the police station, he was just arrested for hundreds and hundreds of lewd photos/videos on his computers… reportedly secret video of unsuspecting women and little girls, including neighbors and Susan herself.

Father-in-law charged with voyeurism, child porn (http://www.komonews.com/news/local/130402668.html):

“Steve Powell, father-in-law of missing woman Susan Powell, has been arrested and charged. Powell, 61, was arrested at his Puyallup home on Thursday night. He has been charged with 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of child pornography.
The charges are based on evidence seized during a recent search of Steve and his son’s Puyallup home by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, officials said, but is not related to the disappearance of Susan Powell.”
