Susan Powell Missing: Perv In Law Steven Powell Arrested For Child Porn and Voyeurism Powell Kids In Protective Custody

(Update 10:00AM EST Susan Powell’s children are in protective custody with Pierce County Child Services)

Pullyallup, WA- You knew it was coming.   Steven Powell,  unaffectionately dubbed Freak-in-law by www.blinkoncrime.com,  was arrested yesterday after child porn and non-consensual hidden video and media files were found during the most recent search of his home by search warrant,  related to the West Valley investigation into the disappearance of Susan Powell.

Powell is facing charges for possession of thousands of  sexually explicit images and videotape of both minors and adult women apparently many appear to have been taken without their knowledge in the Powell home.

Pierce County prosecutors say among those images, are some of Susan Powell.   Steve Powell, 61 was taken into custody late Thursday on 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possession of depiction of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.   It is believed the material was taped between 2006 and 2007 and may include Powell’s neighbors.

Pierce County prosecutors have not ruled out future additional charges.

Steven Powell, father of Joshua Powell, a person of interest in his wife Susan’s disappearance and all around dolt, was not seen fleeing the home in a midnight camping trip.

West Valley Police are referring all calls regarding the elder Powell’s arrest to the Pierce County Sheriff’s office and stress his case is unrelated to the ongoing investigation of Susan Powell’s whereabouts.

It is not known if as a result of Steve Powell’s arrest, Pierce County Child Services will be called to insure the safety and care of the two young Powell children, Charlie and Braden, as they spent a great deal of time with their 61 year old Grandperv  (hint to Chuck Cox).

(Editors Note: Who did not see that coming with the whole “flirtatious relationship” BS- this dude is a seriously sick f*ck. If you had any doubt, read this- a John Jay undergrad could profile this guy in 2 pages )

I commented on the combination of disturbing lyrics and kiddie melodies a while back. It seems many have focused on Chantrey’s strange “life story,” but I thought that in light of his recent arrest for porn and child voyeurism, and his comments about Susuan, that it might be worth revisiting his lyrics.

“You’re pretty as a little doll
And I would like to play with all
The things that make a little doll so nice.
And you could dance and you could sing,
And you could do most anything,
And I could taste your sugar and your spice.”

“There’s a way to have you near me,
And to know you love me dearly. . .
    . . . . . .. .
I can love you in a secret way.
I can love you each and every day.”

    - – - – - – - – - -

“I said, “I love you.” Is that a sin?
I just might wanna say it once again:
I love you, like it or don’t.
I said, “I love you.” You should have kissed me.
I felt like giving up when you just dissed me.
    I love you, so I guess I won’t.

You think I’m crazy, but I insist,
    It’s simple, I can’t resist.
The lips that I never kissed, but wanted
To plant my lips everywhere on you,
And count every hair on you,
And sit here and stare at what you flaunted.

I said, “I love you.” Is that a crime?
And what if I say it to you one more time?
I love you, so put me in jail.”

I also wonder what kind of brainwashing and intimidation techniques Josh used on the kids to skew their memories or keep them quiet. Josh visiting the kids might undo any healing these poor little guys have begun.

I just read lyrics/looked at his site. I am beyond disgusted.
He just gets creepier and creepier every day.

    Susan didn’t have a chance…

  4. connie says:

    to: Lizzy,
Is that creepy or what? The song is so ironic! What a fruitcake!

  5. Word Girl says:

That’s right, Lizzy, thank you for posting the Chantreeeey lyrics again. Those obvious, delusional, juvenile, scorned, guilt-aware lyrics spiked our Creep Meter when we investigated family backgrounds at the beginning of the case.

For those just joining in and, as a good reminder to the rest of us who need to know our Creep Meter (fueled by our BS Detector) is working just fine, thankyouverymuch.

The visitation for JP is a good thing, I think. It will keep him engaged, less likely to flee, and might yield something for LE.

As Sunshine4me said, it will be held outside of the Cox home, probably in a DHS facility, without other families around. Most people don’t know that the regular folks have to sit in the lobby with all the chaos, but ‘special’ folks use the ‘special’ door.

If I were Susan’s family, I would take the children to church and sunday school and then arrange the visitation. That way Susan’s wishes would be honored and the Family would be available for anything that comes up. And, as many have noted, foreseeable consequences are clearly present. (ty gavin debecker.)

  6. Carol says:

@WG – getting a laugh out of “fueled by our BS dector”.

Those lyrics are just too much for my liking.

What a shame the court system didn’t have him investigated when his ex-wife divorced him for all the porn. The courts/lawyers were probably laughing back then thinking that the wife was a prude or lying/using the porn as an excuse to get out of the marriage.

Someone dropped the ball…remember – proactive not reactive. Maybe Susan would still be alive. At the very least all the women/girls he violated with his voyeuristic photos would be unscathed.

    I’ve decided he’s a complete maggot.

  7. Word Girl says:

Complete maggot…lol…and thx Carol, for BS *detector* *spelling

Actually, I was thinking of where I got ‘BS Detector”: I think orginally it was in Teaching As a Subversive Activity, which I read as junior in high school. (I was all over that sheet!!!) Probably should have been one, if they would have had me!

Now, I’m in my fifth incarnation in the medical field, but I keep my chef skills sharp, too. There’s just too much fun in this world to stick to just one thing!

About the courts investigating: as we know, their job is to apply the law to the infraction. The investigation is done by the enforcement branch. If TPowell indicated she believed children had been victims of his sickness, there would have been an investigation (as we naively believe and fervently hope so.) I’d like to hear from her now, if she can shed any light on Josh’s knowledge or involvement.

  8. Wildflower says:

@lizzy – he got his wish for jail, didn’t he :)
My fingers are crossed “Chantrey” sings like a bird about what happened to Susan in order to get a reduced sentence for himself.

Word Girl, naive hope is a good characterization.

My children were targeted by a pedophilic creep last year. During a divorce some years before, his ex-wife had accused him of sexual abuse of his own children, but it was deemed “unfounded.” Even after his more recent activities, a chief of police in a neighboring jurisdiction where he “made children uncomfortable” told me that exhibitionist stalking slime like him don’t “escalate.” That’s a load of head-in-the-sand B.S., and I told her so to no avail.

To all–Take the creepy crap of Freak-in-law and those like him seriously, and don’t rely on LE, as the next intended victim could be someone you know.

Steve’s woman “friend” who reported his proclivities to LE after Susan’s disappearance should be commended, but how the H&LL could she stay his friend all those years? Also, I’m thinking that it must be so hard for his ex-wife to have adult children left in his greasy noose-decorated lair.

What lizzy is too modest to tell y’all, but she shared with me privately at the time, was that she was so atune to what was going on with her kids, she caught this. She took it seriously. ( I would never have mentioned this had lizzy not brought it up, it was hers to share if she so chose and I applaud her for doing so)

Her advice is invaluable, TAKE IT SERIOUSLY, you really have no idea what someone is capable of once they have a sexual attraction to a child, in many cases, neither do they.

I have to be honest, I see this cat as less than sniveling, and I now understand how all their friends were so shocked at his reaction when Susan went missing. He is the controlling sick putz that operates out of the basement, or rock, choose your analogy. In short, he is smarter than one thinks, with gelatinous parts.
    B

That sounds even better to me.

I am now leaning more towards the father being Susan’s killer. The song, the lyrics….it makes it much more personal motive for Steven than Josh (rejection), imo. Throw in the LDS and he has Josh’s backing. Did Josh know about this father’s feelings for his own wife? I can’t believe he’d live with the man, his own father, who saw his wife as more than a daughter in law.

I think Steven knows what happened, and likely where she is, at a minimum. That said, this was a very disorganized crime, smelling more like heat of the moment, a la Scott and Drew Peterson.

This is very unprofessional of me, but why do I think one good sock in the kisser and this guy would tell me everything? I am so not a scrapper, but this sorry ass excuse of a human gets my goat these days like I cannot explain. I have a serious concern though, that Freak In Law may know more about the other gentlemen’s disappearance he so emphatically tried to tie to Susan.

    B

  11. Ragdoll says:

…even more so, did he know his freak dad was capable of such sadistic thoughts and behaviour? Is protecting his own @$$ more important that protecting his children from a potential sexual predator (so much so, he’d rather live with on threat than be exposed to another….that includes Susan’s family).

Those sweet pumpkins have been a ploy and nothing more. I’ve heard noting that tells me explicitly he wants his children to be safe. He’s implied the exact opposite with all his demands, in court. His safety, his character, his needs are his primary concerns.

I still think there is every possibility that the Powell creeps advertised a “job” online for a nice, young Mormon man–lured him somewhere–offed him–and began to create this handy alibi of theirs, that Susan had run off with this guy?

That “metal thing” is a piece of insulated wire that is formed in the shape we see in the photo and is wrapped with other insulated wire to hold it in shape. There is no way to know what it actuly is supposed to be. There is some division of the wire hanging towards the bottom.

The rope with the “hangmans” wrap is not designed to be part of a handle for exercise equipment.

Could all of this be instruments of torture? Very possible.

SLC Trib posts this article on JP getting his children back:

    http://m.sltrib.com/sltrib/mobile/52665446-78/powell-josh-judge-court.html.csp

The article quotes a national ‘expert’ on custody matters and says that JP will need to be cleared as poi in his wife’s disappearance and be uninvolved in his father’s alleged illegal activities.

I would also think that JP would need to get a job to support the L’il
    Guys.

  24. Riverpearl says:

Police are now looking at who else living in the home — one of Josh Powell’s brothers and a sister also resided with Steve Powell — may have known about or participated in the illegal activities.

Todd DeVallance, a Seattle family law attorney who has handled high-profile cases, reviewed the case file at the request of The Salt Lake Tribune and noted the placement is temporary.

“That is subject to change and could change at any time,” said DeVallance, of Tsai Law Co. A guardian ad litem, who represents the children’s interests in such cases, will “recommend where they should be ultimately placed.”

Clark said that Josh Powell’s decision to represent himself in the dependency proceeding was a “huge mistake” and one he should fix. Now, Josh Powell needs to push the court to act with “lightening speed” to evaluate his parental fitness.

Josh Powell agreed last week to do whatever was necessary to get his sons back, including a psychological evaluation and a parenting competency review.

Sherry Hill, spokeswoman for the state’s Children’s Administration, said such evaluations are done “quite often” in child welfare cases and are aimed at measuring attachment bonds, ability to cope with stress and to parent effectively, as well as any propensity for violence in a home.

A statutory clock also has begun ticking. Washington, like Utah and most other states, sets a deadline for making a permanent custody decision once children are removed from their homes and parents’ care. If the case is not resolved within the next nine months, a permanency hearing must take place within 12 months.

And Wexler said that while Josh Powell should take every step necessary to meet the state’s demands and be ready for his children’s return, none of that really matters as long as police are investigating him.

“There is nothing he can do to get the kids back unless he’s found not to have been involved,” he said. “At a minimum, for him to get the children back, police will have to decide he is no longer a person of interest.”

Custody ruling a judgment against Powell’s character

One last ill-considered comment by Josh Powell struck me, if only in that it was eerily reminiscent of the legend of King Solomon and the baby (wherein the King tested the maternal emotions of two women vying over custody of a baby by offering to cut the baby in half).

When asked who should be granted custody of the boys if Powell himself were not selected, Powell’s response was recorded in the Trib article (9/29):

“If that wasn’t possible, [Powell] told Nelson, the boys should remain in foster care.”

What Powell clearly didn’t understand was that his response suggested he cared less for his young children’s plight, being forced to live in a stranger’s home, and more about not losing the upper hand to his in-laws.

In the end it did not require the wisdom of Solomon to figure out this custody dispute. Powell’s own words and actions made it a no-brainer.

“We found articles of clothing but they were found all over the area and cadaver dogs did not indicate on those. We have no reason to believe these items have anything to do with the case either,” he said.

I highly doubt it would be her opinion that she left her children with these whack jobs for another man. Never in a million years. Also they pointed out alleged abuse of her by her parents. And the talk about building a hair salon in the basement? Sounds like JP wanted her to stay at home, be where he could keep control of her.
JP’s and his father are so sick and twisted. I pray that the children have not been abused.

I always heard an actual hangman’s noose has 13 coils, but doing a little surfing on this wack job, more coils makes it harder for the rope to slide, so 8 coils is a preference. I’m wondering if it was some sort of bondage device. Why is it still in the house? Has it been checked for DNA?

  34. Survivor says:

The lyrics on that website, knowing what we do now, is so disgusting. As I was reading through the songs, some RATIONAL things seem so out of place.

As questioned by others before, if JP knew of his father’s obsession (and it does seem like an obsession, not real love or even a crush), how does a man tolerate ANY challenge to his stature as husband? As a man? Especially as what seems an overbearing and controlling man (JP)? Abusers have low self-esteem. He was a control freak with Susan. Did he fail to exert the kind of control over her that he wanted and therefore killed her? Or was it more where SP was concerned? I cannot wrap my mind about how he would accept that kind of challenge from his own father, much less any other man. I’m curious if he was jealous of his own father and murdered her for the “if I can’t have her, nobody can” mentality. Was the JP/SP relationship strained during his upbringing? It’s hard to believe he would put up with Susan being a “common law wife” to both of them. He either was severely abused by his own father and felt he needed to defer to him or something else really strange happened.

And what of SP? If he thought he had an unrequitted love for a woman, is that motive enough for murder? Was he jealous of his own son, someone he saw as another male nemsis or competitor? Did he feel the need to destroy his own son? Did he try to exert control over JP, Susan and their marriage? He is clearly obsessed and that obsession doesn’t fit logically with his “explanation” of Susan running off with another man. He would have been enraged with the possibility of that competition. It would have put him, at least, 3rd in line for her affections.

There has to have been some kind of friction there between father and son. The whole scenario tells me one or the other of THEM would be missing/dead, not Susan. The only other option is that they were involved in this together somehow. Has SP’s phone records and cell pings been investigated? I assume JP’s have been. Is SP the real suspect here and JP saw his cooperation as a way out of a situation that had his “uncontrollable” wife disappeared and his competition eliminated while he walks away with a parents most precious gift, those two adorable boys? Was his head in the sand while his dad took care of his dirty work? It doesn’t add up. Something is severely wrong here. These two aren’t acting like normal humans would in this kind of situation with their messed up thinking and skewed outlook on women and the real world. I would at least expect some finger pointing at each other! They both disparaged Susan. They both blamed her. They both tried to discredit her. They are in this together and there is no sanity in this situation between them. This is like keeping your friends close and your enemies closer in my opinion. Sorry to be so long…

Interesting snips from this Salt Lake Tribune article from August 23, 2011:

    * Graves, who lives in West Jordan, said her missing sister-in-law told her that Steve Powell sent her nude photos of men and tried to kiss her on at least one occasion. Steve Powell also allegedly made a comment at one point suggesting Josh and he “share” the woman, Graves said. Susan Powell was repulsed by her father-in-law, Graves said.

    * “She spurned him a few times,” said Graves, adding she believes her father may have had something to do with Susan Powell’s disappearance. The man had motivation to go after his daughter-in-law when she rebuffed his advances, Graves said.

    * Steve Powell said his relationship with Graves has been dicey because he and his other children are not devout members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The relationship ceased all together, he said, when Graves visited Puyallup a year and a half ago and confronted both Steve and Josh Powell about whether they were involved in Susan Powell’s disappearance.

“She came to the door and accused me of murder and said it’s because Susan spurned me,” Steve Powell said. “Susan and I were very close and we were very close up to the end. They’ve tried to portray Susan as being offended by me and being afraid of me and that is not the case. There are just misunderstandings about how Susan felt about me. Susan never let me forget that she was a woman. But she was also a beautiful daughter to me.”

    * The couple soon moved to Utah, Hellewell wrote, and one day a package arrived from Steve Powell containing photos of Susan’s favorite movie star, Mel Gibson.

“Susan thought this was actually a nice gesture on the part of Steve Powell … then she saw what was sitting in the middle of the stack of pictures: several pictures of naked men,” Hellewell wrote.

Hellewell said Susan Powell threw away the photos and vowed to never let her father-in-law near her children. She said she didn’t want the boys alone around Steve Powell, Hellewell said.

Graves recalled Josh Powell acting indifferent toward his father sending the package with photos.

Does anyone know where Steve Powell was the night that Susan disapeered? I have spent some time reading the website that was created by the deranged Powell men. It seems to focus quite a bit on things that would not be pertinant or important to a family that is desperate to find a missing loved one. All of the time that was put into the “Susan and Steven Koecher Similarities” seems suspicious to say the least. I hope that LE can gain some new knowledge from Susan’s sons.

Thanks for the video link to the hearing and the rope and other object found in the storage/play room.

While this video was not the type to help us get a real understanding of the two objects in question, it did give us a view of the room that contained them. The object with the insulated conductors is shown to be a large hoop. In the video it appears to be made from small diameter aluminum tubing and tied with the conductor. The function cannot, at least by me, determined. One guess is an antenna of some sort.

Even though this is not a home video and is taken by a professional camara person, it is not the type of photos that should be taken if they really want to understand the material and its possible usuage. It takes special training to provide correct stills and videos of a crime scene. These are news photographers and they do not know the right way to get the information.

Both Powells are small men. Part of the problem may be what I call little men syndrome. Compare Josh with the attorney in the video. The attorney is about 5’10″ and weighs 230 lbs or more. Steven may have a mean agressive streak towards women and girls. Josh is a wuss IMO. I don’t know why LE didn’t really question him hard. Maybe the did, but lacked the skills to get the job done.

ATG, I agree completely that both Powells are men of small character.

However, I cannot restrain myself from an objection to stereotyping character and personality based upon physical stature. I know many men of small height of extraordinary courage and morals. It is an unfortunate aspect of our culture to prejudge both men and women based upon physical “ideals,” and I am disappointed that you would fall even momentarily into that trap.

Perhaps the wire loop is an accessory to the paper mache object, such as a carrier for wings as that is what the white materials looks like and the paper mache object looks like a dinosaur or some type of dragon, just visualizing immature boys (josh and whoever) and the wings affixed could be part of the body when they play with it? I liken it to the loop at the golf range to practice your swing, the material could easily be constructed on that loop to go up and down, flap you might say. By all means, it’s not “neat” or “cool” in any fashion, it was just my first impression.

One more thing, about the rope, if it looks like a noose, hangs like a noose, I guess I better believe it’s a noose.

I agree about the statement “Susan and I were very close up until the end” What the HECK does that mean? What end? Thought you thought she ran away with someone.

I hate these two Powells. I really do. Need an a** whooping in my opinion.

Thank you for understanding my clumsy post IRT video & ‘storage/play room’.

Your previous post IRT ‘the contents’ of room & ‘wishing to see more’ & then finding the video seemed to be a ‘perfect match’… also to get more of your input :)

    Thanks

Yup, “… up until the end”.

A very ‘telling’ statement to make. SP appears to ‘leak info’ even though he sees himself as the ‘smartest person in the room’.

I am sorry I offended you regarding the little men syndrome. Of course you are right that it is not all small men. There is such behavior among some men of small statue. I have witnessed it all my life. My mothers youngest brother was only 5’5″ tall. He was a kind and gentle person. I have known other small men that were in you face trying to make up with agression for their lack of height. It is the second behavior that creates the impression and the sterotype.

You tried and that is all you could do. The video was just not good enough to make anything positive. The correct way to shoot objects is to first make a long distance shot such as we saw at the doorway. This gives us an overview of the objects. Then do closeups of each object of interest and finally getting to the various details.

I was taught how to do this by a German immigrant who came to this country following WWII. He was a recognized expert in industrial photography in Germany. He opened a photo shop about a block from the State Capitol building in Jackson, Mississippi. I was doing job photographs at a project near Clinton, Mississippi as all field engineers were required to do.

I dropped off six rolls of film to be developed. The old gentleman also ran the developing lab and he spotted the photos, close to 150 of them. When he saw them, he knew that I needed help. When I came to pickup the photos, he personally took me to one side in the back of the store and we had a teaching/learning session on how to do industrial photography. This continued weekly for several months.

The account of the visit ,linked by Wildflower, at the Cox home to me is very telling about the knowledge the boys may have regarding their mother. The article did state that both boys would have counseling.

I am of the opinion that some children are very observant at an early age. The oldest child seemed to be disturbed that he was going have to leave and the youngest grabbed his aunt Pam’s arm hard as if to make it hard for her to make him leave.

Maybe a good counseler will be able to find some information from the boys that will be helpful in determining what happened to their mother.

Oh what a pervert and a poor excuse for a human being.I find this song
beyond strange for a man to write.”You Were My First Love”
You were waiting when I first awakened,
And although I must have felt forsaken,
You were there, My Dear Mother.
    You were my first love.

I know my son loves me but I would never expect him to say I was his first love.Sorry but this song sounds so abnormal to me.This man is truly tormented by something very evil.
He goes on to say ”
Your eyes were the first that I looked into
Filled with love in spite of what you’d been through.
I felt loved, My Dear Mother.
    You were my first love.

Wonder what this creep meant by Filled with love in spite of what you’d been through?
