Missing TN Mom Karen Johnson Swift: Husband David Stays Mum, Police Question Links To Holly Bobo Case

Posted by BOC Staff | David Swift,Holly Bobo,Karen Johnson Swift,Tennessee Bureau of Investigation | Friday 4 November 2011 10:38 am

Dyersburg, TN- 44 year old Mother of four Karen Johnson Swift has been missing since early Sunday morning following the drop off of her two youngest children at the marital home where the couple continue to reside following Ms. Swift’s divorce filing October 10, 2011.

Friends of the couple speaking on the condition of anonymity to www.blinkoncrime.com have confirmed both Swift’s were previously divorced, and this is not the first hint of marital discord between the two.

Swift’s 2004 Nissan Murano was located approximately one mile away near the intersection of Millsfield Hwy and Harness Rd with a flat tire,  and her missing cell phone was last accessed at approximately 5 am, linking to a web browser.  According to her husband David,  the two spoke briefly in the stairwell at approximately 1:30am,  Karen Swift left and Mr. Swift returned to bed.  There is a residence within visual distance of the location of the vehicle and a volunteer fire company within walking distance as well.

This leaves a nearly 4 hour window in which Karen Swift appears to be unaccounted for.  Sources inside the investigation have confirmed to www.blinkoncrime.com that Karen Swift’s phone pings were last traced to the area of Mississippi River and her phone has since lost power.

Although David Swift has been interviewed by Dyer County Sheriff ‘s Office, it is unclear at this time why Karen would have left the home again after dropping off the couples two young daughters, or why she would not have called her husband for assistance following discovery of the the alleged flat tire.  Mr. Swift operates a business from the Willie Johnson address since 2004 in the aerosol packaging industry.

Calls to the Dyer County Sheriff have not been returned at the time of this publication.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Dyer County Sheriff at

It seems the prudent thing to at least explore the possibility of a connection to Holly’s disappearance.

    Blink,
Yeah, glad to see you’re on this one as well! This is so sad. So many questions with this one that don’t seem to be getting answered (at least publicly). I would really like to know why the husband says she would be leaving again at that time of night/morning. I realize this has not been stated yet though.
So many women missing from Tennessee, awfully strange. Looks like Dyersburg is about 80-90 miles from Parsons if I looked at the map correctly….you mention that police question links to the Holly Bobo case. Other than them both being attractive females with blond hair and being within an hour and a half from each other, I just don’t see it. Are there other links that you are aware of and can share at this time? I did find it “odd” that they both live on streets ending with “Johnson” (Swan and Willie) all though I’m sure that is just a weird coinsidence.
Praying for the friends and family of Karen Swift, especially her 4 children!

  3. twinkletoes says:

Was she dropping off the kids at 1:30 am?

  4. Jane says:

“after dropping off the children”…I’m confused. They both live there, right? Would it be common for this 44 year old mother to be up at 1:30 a.m. chatting and then leaving? None of this sounds good. My prayers for Karen, her family and children. WTH is wrong with people. Geezie.

  5. Angellica says:

Here we go again! I am at a loss for words except to say…What is happening to our women and children today? When you get tired of them, just get rid of them, get a lawyer, and shut your mouth. The law can’t do anything to you!

  6. Cat says:

I assume, considering the husband is currently not a suspect and was the one who contacted authorities, he must have been able to reasonably explain why she left at 1:30 after dropping off the kids and where exactly she was going. 1:30 and 5 is quite a big time window, though, considering the distance that the car was located was very close to the home, if the initial crime took place around there, the time frame/distance appears to not match.

“Authorities say the last sign from Karen was when she used the internet on her phone around 5 a.m. Sunday. Police are working with the phone company to home in on the exact location.”

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-57318097-504083/tenn-mother-of-four-karen-swift-missing-since-sunday/

The Millsfield Fire Department appears to be further away from her house than where her car was located. If she did run into trouble, perhaps she was trying to backtrack, instead of moving further away from the house, and met trouble along the way.

Either way, 4 hours with a functioning cell phone, she didn’t contact anyone, but accessed a website at 5:00? How do authorities know She used the cell phone and not someone else?

  7. Cindy says:

I don’t get the connection with Holly. It appears to me that the husband may be involved as he was last to see her at 1:30 a.m. and where was she going at the time of night? Phone pings towards the river is not a good sign, either. But, if nabbed, I would think that would be the first thing a perp would take from his victim.

  8. MissMonkey says:

Reading this, there seems to be more of a link with the Jacque Sue Waller case – other than the state. Like eerily close.

  9. Blink says:

    @twinkle
Yes, but she lived there also

  10. Blink says:

    @cat
They do not know who used the phone

  11. Carol says:

Why does LE think that her disappearance is related to Holly Bobo’s?

Not nearly enough info to say what I am going to say next, but just that fact that they are getting divorced makes me think the husband is involved (sorry!! I know I am judging) but statistics say…

I hope to highest power that she is found safe and sound. I can’t imagine how lost her four children would feel without their mother.
    :(

  12. Rose says:

She lived there also? Did she know Gary Hills?
    Any overlapping acquaintances?
If these are linked, someone is escalating.

  13. A Texas Grandfather says:

This one doesn’t smell to well. The early morning times are very suspect to me. Why would a mother drop off kids at that hour?

If she went to the home without another adult in the vehicle, it leaves the door wide open to bad behavior of the former spouse.

The sheriff needs to alert all the barge and other traffic on the Mississippi river to be on the lookout for a body. Then again she could be somewhere in a wooded area. I don’t believe she is alive.

  14. Mom3.0 says:

I dont like that her phone as since lost power after pinging near the River.

I am not ready to suspect the estranged husband yet-He is refusing to speak to police? If so then that does seem fishy….

Still, She may have encountered a not so nice and helpful “Good” Samaritan…

What was the cause of the flat tire, was it sliced, a nail? a slow leak? Was it completely flat? Had she driven a way with it flat? Did she have a spare? Did they have triple a?

My prayers for Karen and her children and loved ones.

    AJMO

He is said to be cooperative, it is the press he is not speaking with. In fact, nobody is doing anything but referring everyone to Dyer County Sheriff, including family and friends. Dyer County Sheriff will not return any phone calls from media.

Not the way to promote a missing person case, I can promise you that, but admittedly there could be plenty going on we are not aware of.

I am feeling weathered and jaded at the moment, this looks so textbook to me, this poor woman.

Please remind me when there is 5 minutes for “teacher talk” about women alone, I have an Anniversary outing to share, which I hate because it is personal, but feel obligated.

  15. twinkletoes says:

I had a close friend who actually had a stroke (at 39) and couldn’t find her way home. She called “home” on her cell phone and told her husband she was lost. There is always the possibility something like this occurred, but if she had her cell phone and didn’t call for help, she probably couldn’t. As for the hour, it is a very odd time to be dropping off kids. Josh Powell odd.

  16. twinkletoes says:

Glad to see you working on Karen’s case, Blink!

When Karen’s story first hit the news, I immediately thought of Holly and went right to Google maps to see how far apart they lived. About an hour and a half, so pretty close, but not next door neighbor close.

Decatur County for Holly–Dyer County for Karen.

Both Holly and Karen(Holly’s mom’s name-hmmm)are pretty blonds but are widely spaced age wise(20 to 44). Face shape wise, Holly and Karen are very similar. See photos in UK article in link below.

As OSU fan pointed out, the names of the roads that Holly and Karen lived on are a weird coincidence too(Swan Johnson for Holly and Willie Johnson for Karen).

    —————————————-

Karen had just returned from a Halloween party with their two girls(seven and nine) and dropped them off. To me, dropping them off infers leaving them there while she goes elsewhere.

I think she must have been staying somewhere else but the girls were living at the home with their dad. Karen also has two sons in college, and she and her husband had previous divorces.

Zeus- gonna be honest. I do not think that Karen’s case is related to Holly’s whatsoever except for the fact that LE is obligated to review any possible connections, and the 80-ish mile proximity.

This is a domestic situation, period.

Many of you will have commented and cited other sources by the time this get published, but I’ll still bring up the HuffPo article quoting Karen’s close friend who explained that one of the children was feeling sick at the Halloween sleepover so Karen took her home and into her mommy bed. At 6 am when the child awoke, mommy was gone.

“She had picked her daughter up from a Halloween party around 1:30 that morning because [her daughter] was not feeling well,” Swift’s close friend, Carrie Engelhardt, told The Huffington Post. “She went to bed with her daughter, and when the girl woke up around 6 a.m., her mother was gone.”

bring in the dogs! hopefully they would at least be able to indicate whether karen did set out on foot after getting the flat tire. it might also reveal where she may have been picked up, if she was indeed walking away from the car.

and, sadly… i know of the anniversary… after 9-11, this would be the apex of what changed my outlook on life forever… so very disturbing… i do believe media so much “skews’ our thinking and ‘shapes’ us… so, the internet is a double-edged sword… to all you blinkettes’ and blinkers’ out there, keep posting and fighting for what you feel strongly about, advocate… all of us deserve to be heard… most of all, our lost victims… thanks to blink for giving us one forum in which to be heard and congregate!

  32. Black Pearl says:

It seems odd to me that Karen’s husband reported her missing on Sunday. I wonder what time he actually filed the report on Sunday?

In my mind, one would typically wait longer than a few hours (less than a full day in Karen’s case) to report a healthy, independent adult (in possession of their vehicle no less) missing. I would think that the husband would first feel anger at Karen not returning and perhaps for not answering her phone. Perhaps Sunday night, after he realized she wasn’t coming home, he might get really angry, thinking she was staying with a friend or a new paramour. On Monday, I would think to start calling her friends, family, or her place of employment to see if they had heard from her. If they hadn’t heard from her and were subsequently unable to reach her, then I would start to freak out and call the police.

Blink, do you think its fishy that the husband reported her missing so quickly? Almost as if he knew that she wasn’t coming back?

I have NOT been able to confirm HE filed the mp report-

I have information that it was prompted by calls from a friend- but again, this was not able to be corroborated to my comfort.

  33. A Texas Grandfather says:

Thanks for your clarification investigator. However, if she was still living in the same house, why was it necessary for her to leave at 1:30 A.M.? Where would she be going at that hour?

Kids attending a Halloween party and returning at a very late hour is strange as well. Of course the kids may be older teenagers.

Another question regarding the time she left. How is this time confirmed? Is it the father that is supplying the time?

When in the world are women that file for divorce going to learn to make plans that will allow them to live in another place as soon as the papers are filed? Divorce attorneys need to really attack this issue when working with a woman.

A domestic situation that causes a woman to file for divorce IMO has already reached a dangerous state. A woman needs to let her family know as quickly as possible. This is her mom, dad, brothers and sisters if any.

  34. zeus says:

So this is the second divorce from the same person. I wondered about the age difference in their kids (two boys in college and two girls under ten), so that explains it.

blink, yw, for the search photos. I looked at them for a very long time today, not knowing what I was looking for. I just asked, “let something speak” and noticed the officers in the grassy area near the barn or red house. Morganesque, I’m sad to say. It was not only a local, but a very-close-to-home-local.

I’m wondering if the lack of justice for these victims has emboldened
the perpetrators and let the sociopaths destroy families, communities, lives.

    Sigh.

That residence is what I was referring to in the piece. It’s location in proximity to the abandoned car and the amount of time and type of search exacted there tell a story, imo.

There are colleagues of mine that hold a belief that our societal interest in true crime, forensics and case outcomes is a severe detriment to anyone that might be either contemplating a similar crime, or when they find themselves in a situation where they see their plight as “similar”, that they draw from their “perceived” knowledge in either planning or cover up.

While I do agree there is no doubt our “CSI society” plays a role, I do not agree that the answer is to censor programming per se, but there is also NO DOUBT in my mind the bigger problem is we now have media paying for exclusivity under the guise of “imaging rights” that imo, IS interfering with, and in some cases obstructing investigations and prosecutions.

I have not been able to write about a case that I feel is the epitome of one example, it has made me so heartsick I could not be objective if I pretended to be someone else. I guess my not being able to bring myself to mention it now leaves hope I will someday if it is “to be”.

A true and correct chronicle of how SOME of the msm is increasing profit across the board and obfusicating truth while hiding behind the very amendment allowing same, is way over due. Who will dare?

I will venture a guess it will not be Chris Hanson, lol.

My thoughts, prayers, and loving laughter go out to the family of Andy Rooney this morning.

Johnson described his daughter as a talented landscaper with a devoted group of customers in her hometown of Walnut Ridge, Ark., where her parents live. Swift was scheduled to go to Arkansas today to do some landscaping.

Swift’s mother last spoke to her on Friday. “She sounded excited about coming down here and working,” said her father.

He imagines that his daughter got a flat tire and thought she’d just walk home when something must have happened to her.

“She usually runs about three miles a day. She’s in real good shape,” he said. “She probably figured she’d be able to get home in 10 minutes [on foot].”

Pay particular attention to 8 and 13.

To me, the way they are close to the road in pictures 8 and 13,
suggests looking for something small, like, cell phone, identification
clothing, shoes etc. Possibly thinking that it may be one of the only locations (given proximities) that anything could have been disposed of?

Do we know which story is true? I’ve read she dropped her child off at 1:30 at home and left and then also read that she brought her sick child home at 1:30 and went to sleep with her and wasn’t there when the daughter woke up.

If the latter is true then I say the story that she left again at 1:30 came from her husband to take her and eyes away from the house and himself. I think he killed her and he placed her car where it was found and logged onto the internet to make it look like she used it and took off back home. Wouldn’t take him long, it was less than a mile away.

Wonder if they’ve found her purse yet?

    I agree, classic domestic situation.

Every “next dude” is smarter than the last I guess. The first name that popped into my head when I read the facts of this case, is Cal Harris.

“There’s some items that could possibly be tracked to her,” said Box. “But we definitely need to be sure before we say they are hers.”

Box said DNA tests are being done on the items.

They have probably already Asked the family if those are in fact her clothes.

Blink, you think that the proximity of the house (in photos 8 and 13) is of interest because of it’s close proximity to the car and the amount of time LE spent searching around there.

Earlier you indicated that you feel this situation is domestic. If that’s the case, would the house in photos 8 & 13 be of interest in that they may have heard/seen something if there was a loud dispute or if Karen fought back? Is it possible she tried to flee from the aggressor towards this house but didn’t make it?

If the crime is not domestic, is this house of interest because it was the closest residence to the car and, perhaps, the first place Karen would go for help? There is a barn right near the house as well as a small shed with both open and closed areas. I’m wondering if the occupants of this residence have ATVs or dirt bikes, which could be stored in this open shed or in the barn.

Since juvenile dear season just started, as a previous poster mentioned, could ATVs be of interest here? I was looking at the surrounding area using Google Earth and in one of the fields north of the Harness Rd. and Millsfield Hwy (I can post coordinates, if you’re interested) there’s a truck parked in the middle of a field with what looks like something in the bed— maybe a dirt bike. It looks like there are trails and dirt roads all around that area. I was also wondering where LE is standing in photo 4– maybe at a trail head of some sort?

I was trying to think of how/where she might have been traveling if her cell phone pings indicated that she (or her phone) was moving towards the river– there aren’t too many roads in the immediate area (around the intersection where she got the flat)that go to the river, or close to it anyway.

They should look for available video survalliance cameras at farm house close by and on the way to any finds.
This bad economy has created livestock farmers to watch out for animal thefts and video could be availabe.

    :’o(

Yep. All too familiar. It’s practically identical.

We have the same situation here…the homicide of a teacher/wife/mother who taught just blocks from where I live.

All we’ve heard from the RCMP is that this was not random and the public doesn’t need to fear their safety.

Any guesses as to who found her body? No arrests. No charges. No updates.

Not that it matters, but I resisted commenting on cutie Karen's case. I feel, like many of you, the outcome is rather obvious.

DO THESE MEN EVER EVER THINK ABOUT THEIR CHILDREN??????

  49. Edward says:

She was a landscape contractor.. Does she do all this work herself ?
Or does she run an actual landscape crew of workers ? If she has workers who are they ?
Who is she close to all day… ?

She is recent divorce, second time …Bored? A possible desire to… live and just have fun ? Plans to meet up with somebody ? 1:30 a.m. .. ?
Could make a person vulnerable ..
