Josh Powell Unsealed Proof: He WAS A Murder Suspect, He WAS In Possesion of Child Porn, He WAS Accused of Incestuous Sexual Abuse, He WAS Convicted of Juvie Crimes and Incarcerated AND He Still Hacked And Burned Charlie and Braden Powell To Death

She knew.  No way around it ever again.  Susan Cox Powell knew her husband Josh, father of her toddler sons Charlie and Braden might kill her one day.  Eighteen months prior to her disappearance Susan opened a safety deposit box and in an almost metaphoric gesture, she stapled all the edges of her prophecy shut.

As if to insure the words sealing her fate could not escape, they remained in the cold steel secret until they rang true.

The release of unsealed warrants in the pending voyeurism and child porn possession case against Susan’s deviant father in law Steven read like a Cornwell novel.  The non-fiction version.

Unsealed, Unsavory NOT Unavoidable

If I tried hard I could not come up with a sicklier, skeevier fictional plot of an aging government corrections and furniture employee splitting time between surreptitiously taping his sons wife in her under things for his collection of “ things to jack-off to while recording it” collection and taping innocent neighbor children taking a bath through the window.

That same paternal perv was the recipient of the last phone call made on Josh Powell’s cell December 6, 2009  before it was turned off for an extended period.   In contrast, the last call made from Susan’s cell at 2:29 on the same day was to her friend Jovanna Owings, whom she invited over to an impromptu dinner of pancakes prepared by Josh.

Immediately after eating,  Susan was overcome with fatigue, went to bed by 5 PM and left her guest unraveling yarn while Josh announced he was preparing to take the children sledding.  In the dark.

In retrospective fantasy our minds create the conversation as we wish it had played.

Hi J, It’s Susan.  Come for dinner.   I am having Susan’s sleepcakes.    Come save my life.

Or, should have been, so as to unravel the other yarn that seemingly bound the fate of Susan and her beloved boys.

On June 28, 2008 Susan wrote what she titled The Last Will and Testament of Susan Powell with express instructions that whoever located the document in her safety deposit box, it was not to be shown to or shared with Joshua Powell.

Susan went on to describe the couples marital strife over the last four years  and threats made to her should she divorce him.  Susan requests the reader speak to her sister in-law Jennifer Graves and cautions if her death appears to be an accident, it most likely is not.

According to the Interpleaded suit filed by New York Life in an effort to have the court decides it’s beneficiary designation and obligation, that letter was written exactly one year to the day after Susan became insured by a $500,000  5 year term life policy on June 28, 2007.

The policy had an additional rider to increase the face value of the policy added on May 15, 2008 to $1,000,000.

On August 7, 2007 Joshua Powell became covered under a separate NY Life police for $1,000,000 with 2 additional riders on both Powell children totaling an additional $500,000.

On February 4, 2009, also according to NY Life, Josh and Susan Powell executed a revocable trust and designated same as the secondary beneficiary on both policies with Susan named as the sole trustee. Only a portion of the Declaration of Trust was provided to NY Life, the details of the entire revocable trust have not been made public.

On February 5, 2012 Joshua Powell attacked his sons Charlie and Braden with a hatchet after locking the court appointed social worker out of the house, and set the home he was renting ablaze, killing all 3.

The relevance of the date coincidences of the testament, insurance policies and deaths of Josh, Charlie and Braden are unknown.

Although named as a possible trustee, Chuck Cox, Susan’s father, was unaware of the policies existence until the children’s death.

However, Michael C Powell, Josh’s brother and former Democratic candidate for the Washington House of representatives,  also a named a possible trustee, definitely was.

In fact, on December 5, 2012, Josh submitted a change in beneficiary to the policy, in apparent contradiction to the trusts requirement that only a court order could remove or replace the trustee to name himself as the sole beneficiary.  Should he be alive 15 days after the deaths of the insured the cash was his, and if not, Michael Powell.

Apparently faced with some down-time on Valentine’s Day, exactly 9 days following the suicide of Josh Powell and murder of Charlie and Braden Powell, the “other insured”, both Michael and Alina Powell contacted NY Life for assistance in processing a claim as beneficiaries under the life insurance policies of their brother and nephews.

Charlie and Braden Powell were interred the day before on February 13, according to the death certificates issued by the Medical Examiner.

The following day, February 15, Alina Powell, accompanied by her Mother Terrica, visited Woodbine Cemetery and reserved a plot for Joshua, in close proximity to the grave of his sons, whose funerals were February 11.

Sources unwilling to speak on the record citing “concern for being dragged into this nightmare further” have confirmed to BOC that a completed insurance claim form was presented by Alina Powell as proof of payment for the plot and burial arrangements.  Charles and Judy Cox were made aware that the Powell family was considering purchasing the plot for Josh near his sons AND of the existence of the policy to pay for it- and promised immediate legal action.

Not to leave such an unscrupulous possibility to chance,  Paul Pastor, Pierce County Sheriff and Ed Troyer, Executive Director of CrimeStoppers,  put up their own cash and began taking donations resulting in the purchase of both plots on either side of Charlie and Braden.

Josh Powell was subsequently cremated on February 17 and his family has not specified what they plan to do with his remains.

Alina was also the recipient of $7,000 transferred to her account from her Brother Josh’s withdrawal the day before the murders. The content of 4 emails she exchanged with Josh over February 4th and 5th have not been disclosed publicly.  Alina also claimed in a 911 call following the explosion at Josh’s home that he called her and left her a goodbye voice mail 20 Minutes PRIOR to him chopping the children he claimed she was a co-caregiver of, with a small axe found next to him in the charred death den.  She appeared exclusively in a Good Morning America Interview February 9, 2012.

“..I think he must have just felt there was only one way for him to protect his sons from the pain,..

Interviewer response: But he did not protect them, he killed them.

“I wish it had been differently.”

Initially Alina appeared cooperative with Pierce county detectives, until they learned that she had received four emails and a voice mail from Josh leading up to fateful events of February 5th.

She became agitated during questioning when confronted with the information that an unidentified teller at the Bank Of America had informed them of Josh’s transactions February 4th and surveillance footage and receipts were enroute to the PCSO via subpoena.  When asked to allow police to copy the voice mail and emails from Josh via her cell phone, she refused.   Alina’s cell was seized immediately.

Pierce County Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed whether Ms. Powell is currently under investigation.

In a motion on behalf of Charles and Judy Cox seeking to be named administrator or Guardian Ad Litem in the estates of The Powell children in the absence of their Mother filed March 7, 2012, the Cox’s announce they are aware of two additional life insurance policies through Beneficial Life Insurance Company.

The policies are believed to be a total face value of an additional $1,000,000 to the estate.

Charles and Judy Cox were declared Special Administrators of the Powell children’s estate on March 12.

Reasonable, Rational Then Reality

Whoever thinks Susan Powell left her home alive raise your hand.

Cricket.     Cricket.

The reality is nobody can be remotely surprised at what an abysmally inept liar Josh Powell is.

Anyone following this case for 5 minutes can deduct his ability to be the poster child for LIAR LIAR 2 would be an underachievement. Criminals are often luckier than smart and Josh Powell is no exception.  No new news on any of this so far.

So what is?

It would seem the initial finger pointing exercise by the West Valley Police Department and the Pierce County Sheriff’s office can cease.  BOTH offices had substantial information that Josh Powell was a person of interest in the first degree murder and aggravated kidnapping of his missing wife Susan.

Immediately after the unsealing of the warrants last Friday, Pierce County WA prosecutor Mark Lindquist did not mince words:

“..Based on the facts that we now know, I can say that the case against Josh Powell for the murder of Susan Powell is one that we would have charged..”

According to the newly released search warrants including Pierce County, which are largely narrative as conveyed by West Valley detectives regarding the current evidences against Josh and Steven Powell, there is no indication that a grand jury was ever specially convened, a sitting grand jury ever heard any evidence in Susan’s disappearance or that an arrest was imminent.

Actual warrants executed by WVPS and subsequent property inventories were not offered as exhibits in support.

That is in stark contradiction to  information given to Chuck Cox by WVPD according to his lawyer Steve Downing.

Downing maintains that the Cox’s were used to “ruffle the feathers” of Josh to progress the investigation and were told his arrest was imminent in late August, confirming the report published exclusively on www.blinkoncrime.com on August 25, 2011.

Susan’s blood was on a tile near the sofa which was being dried after cleaning with 2 large fans still running when police entered the home in response to a request to a missing persons report in the presence of Terri Powell and Jennifer Graves.

Jennifer informed police there was a 2ft round pink stain under an adjacent couch.

Susan’s cell phone was in the console of the family minivan he used to drag his sleeping toddler sons out in frigid weather.  According to statements made by Charlie Powell, at some point, Susan was with them.  Her purse and contents normally contained in it were located in the master bedroom.

It is also “news” to Dr. James Manley .

According to the Psychological Evaluation Josh Powell consented to in his commitment to regain custody of his children, Dr. Manley had some concerns about Josh’s candor about some of his past, but that all changed when Pierce  County detectives shared the 400 images reflecting various caricatures, animations and 5 or 6 photos depicting incestuous child molestation and child porno-esque images from the seized computer belonging to Josh, in 2009.

Not a misprint. Although none of the actual WVPD warrants executed in December 2009 were included in exhibits within the August 2011 and September 2011 PCSO previously sealed submissions, they reference the creepy cache.

It is unclear how those images were not the basis of a child welfare complaint or possible criminal action in Utah before Josh skipped town and rented out his home in the first place.

If two precious and innocent lads end up brutally murdered after spending the bulk of their life with an alleged pedophile that is likely responsible for killing their mother is not enough to prompt structure for change,  I do not know what is.

Do You Know What Happened To My Mom?

“No, what happened to your Mom?”

According the cell phone reports, Josh’s cell phone was off until 3:02PM December 9, 2009.  After a fake call to Susan’s cell which is sitting next to him, he drives  approximately 20 miles south of West Valley City.

Robin Snyder, a Comfort Inn employee in Sandy Utah, says Charlie Powell asked her if she knew what happened to his Mom earlier that morning in the breakfast area of the hotel.  Snyder was called into the kitchen to continue breakfast service and when she returned Josh, Braden and Charlie Powell were gone.  She recognized Josh Powell when Susan’s disappearance hit the news a few days later and called the tip line.  Snyder did not receive a return call.

Comfort Inn Contintental Breakfast Area

When Josh Powell murdered his two young sons and killed himself in Puyallup Washington on February 5th, she called West Valley Police again,  and has since been interviewed.   The Comfort Inn  is in the cell ping radius.

Another tipster wishing to remain anonymous believes she saw a very unfriendly Steven and Josh Powell visiting the Topaz Mountains in October 2009, three months prior to Susan’s disappearance.  Topaz Mountain was the site of the largest organized law enforcement search for Susan Powell in September, 2011.

Josh’s first cell phone ping on Dec 9  West Valley City in the general area where a  strip club  bouncer, bartender and patron say to the supreme annoyance of other patrons -Josh visited on the day Susan was reported missing.

Kimberly Sherman, a co-owner of Deuces Wild Strip Club called West Valley Police a week later.

WVPD confirms they investigated the tip but could not confirm it was Josh.

Steve Powell was the last call from his son’s phone prior to Susan’s disappearance- where was he that fateful weekend?

If Josh was at the Deuces Wild- who was looking after the children?

Powell Purgatory In Perpetuity

For me, seeing pornography was like lighting a fuse on a stick of dynamite. I became stimulated and had to gratify my urges and explode….  Arthur Bishop

During the battle for custody that ensued following Steve Powell’s arrest for felony voyeurism,  Jennifer Powell Graves,  openly contradicted Mother Terrica’s affidavit  about her brother Josh’s stability as a parent.  At the time,  Terrica  was  living with her daughter’s family.

..”Jennifer also says her father’s arrest did not surprise her and that as a child she was exposed to her father’s pornography addiction…” People Magazine

..”Jennifer Graves has also said she was not surprised by her father’s arrest. She claimed that Steve Powell made sexual advances toward his daughter-in-law and said her father had a pornography addiction that he exposed his own children to while they were growing up in Washington…”

 Salt Lake Tribune

Putting aside the obvious uncomfortable living arrangement that such a difference of opinion would create,  isn’t it clear Jennifer Graves is accusing her father of  a crime, or crimes?

Exposing children to porn is definitely that.  What kind of sordid heinousness went on in the Powell home?

Plenty.  Sealed Powell family information obtained exclusively by www.blinkoncrime.com

Sounds like everyone knew the Powell men were scum, even the daughter/sister. Why didn’t any of the agencies which were supposed to help the 2 young boys know this? Their deaths were avoidable. I don’t blame the woman working for child welfare (though I am shocked she didn’t have more common sense)but I do think that child welfare sees these kinds of cases all the time, and they should know better than to allow certain kinds of visitations. Especially at the home of the father. Imagine Susan wondering each day if today was going to be the day he was going to kill her? It’s all just very heart breaking…

As we will see in conjunction with part 2, there is plenty of opportunity for prevention.
Heartwrenching truths that need to be heeded and used to change policy, imo.

  3. lizzy says:

Susan’s blood was on the tile and her phone was in the van he was driving as he called? And the large pink stain was tested and found to be . . .? And after child porn was found on his computer, he was allowed to keep sole custody of those babies because?

Those who made the decision not to charge Josh Powell should have the photos of those two children tattooed on the backs of their hands to look at each and every day.

The blood was minute- not enough to substantiate a homicide, but if the psychologist found the actual images WERE child porn, and as you will see from the analysis, worse- they would have had the same finding in Utah and perhaps changed the outcome for these little boys.

    We should be this angry.

Your warning in the comment to me on Monday is so true. I am very certain that you have cleaned up some of the facts as presented here.

Waiting for part II. Somehow the public must find a way to make it difficult for sick creeps like the Powell’s to get away with destroying others.

I go back to my original statement about the West Valley, Utah LE. They sat on their collective hands and did not keep Josh in Utah as a person of interest or convene a Grand Jury and get charges for Susan’s disappearance.

The local District Attorney in Utah should be removed for incompetence. Maybe that will begin to make these people realize that when a woman disappears in circumstances such as happened with Susan, there is very good reason to hold the husband as a suspect until proper investigation can be made.

  5. Rose says:

looking forward to part 2. Not sure if it’s policy or personnel. Imo there can be scope & authority to act,
& failures are the human element.

I wonder if the boys were drugged and just left in the van? He had just killed Susan and I don’t think leaving the boys doped up in the van, would be much of a stretch for that monster.

  7. Word Girl says:

How credible is the Deuces Wild strip club sighting? Three people there claimed it was definitely Josh at the club. He must have believed he could leave the boys asleep in the van while he was being annoying?

Blink, will you be able to detail Josh’s juvenile criminal history and his incarceration?

How much worse could this situation be to move Law Enforcement officials to act? They need their hands untied, if that is the problem.

  8. Blink says:

    @Rose.
    Absolutely.

  9. Blink says:

    @world girl
Because there are no cameras , and because of distances between cells in the area, le can only say he was in west valley city, moved south for 20 miles, and both the strip joint and the Cindy inn are in the radius.

It is my understanding from a source the comfort inn sighting has been confirmed.

Yes, part 2 will chronicle a few items dealing with a conviction.

  10. Word Girl says:

arrggh. Just lost a post somewhere in Blinkland.

Here’s most of what I wanted to say:

“…Come to think of it,” Josh Powell is quoted by James Manley, Ph.d, adding that Josh said he and a few other teenagers went into a “burned out” 7-11 type store and stole candy and Playboy magazines.
Although Manley says that Josh couldn’t remember what the charges were exactly, Josh admitted to being convicted and remanded to a juvenile detention facility for five days. (page 10 of 22 @http://www.scribd.com/doc/81994361/Josh-Powell-psychological-report)

All of these hours of contact with Josh Powell and two months of time for reflection on his interviews and supporting documents and Manley couldn’t say Hell to the No? Josh Powell was a sick individual who needed a great deal of supervision. Manley, #1, could have prevented this double homicide of Charlie and Braden Powell.

  11. Word Girl says:

oh, heck I guess I lost that one, too. Hoo boy.

That man’s day is a’comin. I for one, as all you know, absolutely and without reservation believe Steven Powell is complicit in the planning, murder, or after the fact participation in the disappearance of Susan Cox Powell.

With Josh deceased and multiple agencies feeling the weight of “coulda, shoulda, woulda”- how badly does anyone want to have at least one demon seed pay for this.

I guess ole Alina will have an explanation for that as well.

I get lost on the time line
Did the sleep cakes have anything to do with the disappearance of Susan
    Or happen another time
The pic of Josh looks so sick it is hard to believe
    More people weren’t alerted
    That something was really wrong
Did Steven Powell live in Utah at one time
Or did the serious stuff happen when they visited
    Or before Josh moved
a simple time line would make this easier
    For me

  17. Malty says:

    Another thing confuses me
Did Susan and Josh meet and marry in WA
    Then move to Utah
    That’s what I think
    Then after Susan disappeared
Josh moved back to his home state WA into
    Steven’s house
Did Susan ever live in Steven’s house
So he was taking secret pics of her undressing
    Or what?
at any rate Steven is such a bum Moo

  18. Malty says:

At any rate even if it is confusing
    I hope Steven gets his
I blame him for all this

  19. zeus says:

This may help a bit Malty.

This is a timeline of major happenings from the day Susan disappeared until the day Josh kills himself and the boys.

Now we can add to that the news of Steven taking December 8th and 9th off (the Tuesday and Wednesday after Susan disappeared) and also, interestingly, the same days that Josh racked up the 800+ miles on the rental car.

I do not know how Steven got to be a “demon seed.” But I’ve got a dang good idea how Josh and some of his siblings got there. What is hardest to fathom is how one of them seems to have turned out to be a responsible and reasonable adult. I’m choosing to think that Susan played one part in helping her grow into that.

  21. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Lizzy

I too believe that Josh will have to stand before the final tribunal.

A single murder would probably not have been the ultimate death sentenance. We are not judges of the universe, but the way he took the boys out needlessly is in my mind evil to the point of iniquity.

Those that are adjudged to be iniquitous are handed over to the angels of death for the final act of his being. They will remove every trace of his existance.

  22. Mom3.0 says:

I am very saddened by the info that we now are aware of-

I realize most are questioning LE and CS but what of those who blatantly failed to protect ?
It would seem as Susan herself was scared and knew or at least feared what her husband and her father in law were capable of- was she guilt rifen over something she had no control over?

We need to remove the stigma for the victims of domestic violence and/or other (incest etc)- we need to make it easier for them to come forward and be afforded protection and solace- when contemplating leaving an abuser…

It seems that most of Joshs family was aware or was in cahoots with Josh to one degree or another- these family members need to be held accountable how dare they seek to award themselves financially- the signs were on the wall in this case- how dare joshs sister the childrens aunt even attempt to equate the murder or these defenseless little boys to a fathers protecting them from harm?

“I wish it had been differently”– please- lay down your mistaken belief in martyrdom and place the blame where it belongs squarely on their fathers, your brothers shoulders- and ps stop protecting that sorry excuse for a father you have- come clean, be penitent and tell the whole truth of what you know and what you fear to be true-

It would have been different if you had the courage to speak out. to tell the truth- sadly you did nothing- do it now- and let them RIP
    AJMO

    Agreed Mom 3.0.

Unreal how every member of this family was so willing to victimize Susan, Charlie and Braden, and the Cox family. In their murders they still have a hand out for cash?

The depravity is beyond my grasp.

    B

  23. lizzy says:

Not every member of the family, not Jennifer Graves. I mention this so soon again, because this poor woman has so much to grieve; I think the losses of Susan and the boys must be devastating to her. One picture of her and Susan together just spoke to me, saying that here Jennifer found true “sister love.”

Jennifer also described a terrified 7-year-old Alina around the time of their parents divorce. I shudder to think of what depravities occurred that Alina now accepts the behavior of the men in her family, and would even profit from it.

lizzy- You are absolutely right and I thank you for pointing that out, I should have been more specific as I have in the past that Jennifer Graves is to be lauded for the love and support she showed Susan, her children, and the Cox family. I cannot begin to imagine the grief that comes the knowledge that ones worst spoken fears came true.

I want to encourage folks in a similar situation to behave in a similar manner to Jennifer and Kirk Graves.

My heart hurts at every turn of this case.

  24. Carol says:

Josh Powell should of been locked up!! No visitation rights whatsoever!! Maybe just his attorney. I am looking forward to Part 2. I feel that someone, not just Josh, needs to also be accountable for the death of the boys. What in the world was everyone doing? Sloppy investigation, sloppy children welfare case. Why didn’t someone know Susan had a Safety Deposit box a week after she was missing? Good Grief.

Yes, we should this angry Blink!!

  25. A Texas Grandfather says:

We cannot know of all the evil things the Powell family had to endure that were created by their father. Children are easily trapped into such situations unless they are able to have some assistance from other family members or members of the community who become aware of the situation and will commit to help.

Long ago the communities were much more involved in caring for families and children that were trapped in such situations. Instead, we have primarily turned the task over to local and state government.

Our founding fathers realized that caring for a family did not involve a government agency. They knew from experience that this involved moral choices that were best left to the religious organisations and the community members.

We have created a caring community of people as the result of Blink’s work to confront evil and help families who have suffered the loss of a loved one. As both Lizzy and Mom3.0 have pointed out, Susan was able to make a difference to at least one and maybe more.

Step by step we must return our society to good moral values and behavior. We must learn to watch with sharpened eyes and ears to the needs of our community and then take the steps to provide help.

You raise a very valid and scary point about the other grandchildren of Steve Powell. The grandparents of all should take some extra steps to make certain they are safe and are not being subjected to behavior that is detramental to their well being.

Unfortunately, our legal system sometimes makes it difficult for grandparents to do all that could be done.

  32. pale rider says:

ATG, you’re absolutely spot on about our wonderful Blink community!

Now if we, each of us, can take a small measure of what works so well here and use it in our own communities, what miracles we might see take root.

  33. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Thank you pale rider.

All it takes is for each of us to keep ourselves alert to opportunities that we find as we go about our daily lives. Then when we find one take some positive action. One bit of kindness and good will at a time multiplied by our numbers will accomplish a lot. When others see what you do, they may decide to join in the activity.

In my lifetime, I have witnessed our society become manerless, ugly and selfish to a degree that is mind boggling. Learning to “love your neighbor” no matter where they may be located is job one.

  34. Malty says:

  35. karen says:

Has anyone considered that the Powell’s (both father and son and perhaps mother and daughter) were involved in a large pedophile ring in the community? These rings usually include top government officials (and other folks in positions of power) who protect one another at the expense of children. This would explain why no one fought to stop Josh from getting his children. He should never have been left alone with them.

After reading The Franklin Scandal, nothing would surprise me. We need more people to speak the truth about this horrible crime against our children. The human predators must be stopped.

  36. Jnpgh says:

This is all such a tragedy – and my heart aches so for the Coxes and Jennifer – who must bear the terrible guilt of what her freky family members did to Susan and the boys.

One question: no matter what can or cannot be done to perv-in-law, Steve, can’t evil Alina and her hubby be investigated for insurance fraud (attempted or otherwise)?? If they tried to change things and “beat the Coxes” to the beneficiary payment….maybe that will be how SOMEONE in that family devoid of decency and ethics – can be held accountable for some of the evil that they have perpetrated.

Plus, I think insurance fraud is under state insurance department or law authority investigation, and would probably put it under the Washington State Insurance Commissioner and/or Attotrney General.

Maybe getting this case (or a portion of it) out from the jurisdication of the two police departments that between them couldn’t seem to get off homeplate might mean some actual action and ressults.

I am so sick and tired of evil, sneaky people getting away with murder and just about anything they darn well please – just because the police don’t have a video tape of what they did.

I always remond folks that the feds could never get Al Capone on murder …but they were able to convict him on tax evasion. He went to prison and died there.

If insurance fraud can be pinned on Alina and hubby, I say GO FOR IT!

To my knowledge Alina is unmarried and it is not a crime to seek to file a claim for insurance proceeds where one is named a beneficiary.

Re: Picture of Josh Powell above

The media and others said in news stories that Josh Powell was looking so bad that the media attention on him was too much. I would say to those-look again, that is a picture of a man that knows horrible things and has done horrible things. He’s not quite as cocky in that pick as he was in the interview when he pointedly said, “Yes, I would like closure.” It makes one wonder if Susan was never found and the pornography was never found, if that family would have continued to be depraved or if the scare of being charged for
Susan’s death would have made them go to the nearest church and cry out for Christ to heal them. It is one of the sickest crimes I have ever read about. Maye they should just lock up Steven and Sandusky together and let them go at it…..no on second thought they would have too much fun. OMG Yuk!

  38. OperaRach says:

Clearly I think that the Powell family is seriously disturbed. And, while I can identify with a 7 year old Alina being scared – I can’t identify with a grown woman allowing children, much less family members, be potentially abused or knowing and participating in crimes by your brother. Or, while not illegal, not realizing how disrespectful it is to profit off of your innocent nephews’ deaths.
But, I wanted to address something that I see said here a lot. I don’t post often but I do agree that the Blink community is awesome. But, when people say that society or the community has become cold and disengaged and that we are less caring for families (pointed out by ATG, who I know is an awesome poster and has to be a wonderful man in person) I don’t really understand what that means. I understand that children need to be cared for and protected. And, in this case the people literally charged with protecting these boys and finding justice for Susan, did not do that. But, for the greater community – what does that mean when you say to be more caring?

I would love to have a defined way to improve the lives of children in my community. I’m not saying this in a defensive way, because I am of a younger generation – it is truly out of frustration. I work with a children’s bereavement organization – I’ve worked in nonprofits for a long time – I volunteer for an educational children’s charity but within my own family I have siblings that are messed up and kids (some teenagers now) that I know didn’t get the support that they needed. And, I’ll tell you – at least one of my siblings – he is really dangerous. Thankfully he lives in another state but I fear for the day that he ever comes back to my state. He’s got a police record but it doesn’t mean much. I really believe he’s mentally and emotionally disturbed – and particularly a danger to my parents. But, what could I do to help protect my parents if he ever comes back to our state? Probably nothing…
So my point is – I get that the community at-large needs to rally around families and children. But, there are a lot of available organizations and help out there to support families that are based in the community. And, even though I work in a field where I am more aware of support and help that is out there for families and kids – it is still really difficult to get families support. And, even with my own nieces and nephews – other than being personally available to them – I couldn’t tell you what I could do to make a bigger difference in the direction of their lives. Because you can see the trajectory of how their life is going to go and it sucks.

And, I want to say this to – I was born in the mid-70′s. I realize that the perception that society is less caring is common. And, I’ve joined in the generational debate before in these forums. But, I’m just going to put this out there. I think it is a real mistake to idealize the past and in some ways I feel like that is what happens. Reports of abuse and help to abused kids, spouses, families in general were not necessarily common place in the past. The field of psychology has expanded greatly in the last 100 years. Anecdotally I can tell you that members in my family that were abused sexually 50 years ago did not receive the support they needed. There weren’t tons of resources available to them, society could be very hushed about it, the years of abuse they suffered was reported to the police but for the “sake” of the victims was told that it was probably better not to pursue it. Who knows how many kids this guy went on to abuse? But, my point is there are a ton more resources and community driven programs out there to help victims of abuse, for families in need of assistance, etc. now than there has ever been. So, when you say that people were more caring of families I can’t imagine what could have been done differently by the general community (I’m not talking law enforcement and DFACS, etc.). I know, ATG, that in the past you’ve said that the community would be more ostracizing of people doing bad things but leveraging accusations of abuse or accusations about just being depraved in general is serious. Maybe more people back in the day would be willing to call other people out but I feel like that people more had an attitude of “mind your own business”. No citizen could have or probably would have walked into the Powell house and taken those kids out. So, what do you think the community could have or should have done to be less callous and caring in order to help kids like the Powell boys?

Anyways, this purely out frustration with the situation in general and just general disbelief about how badly things ended for Susan and those boys. In reality, it sounds like the people whose job it is to actually take care of criminals and protect citizens didn’t do their job. I don’t think anyone outside of the Powell family and any of their supporters didn’t realize that those kids were in danger. But, what else as community could we have done? I have been reading this blog for years and I feel like besides being a wonderful advocate for victims that has helped me better protect myself and my family. But, I don’t feel like I’m any more capable or understanding about how to better help the kids or victims in my community or, in some instances, my own extended family.

  40. Ode says:

OperaRach, you are bringing up very good points. Evil has existed since time began. We are now more aware of it with vast immediate media that we have now. 5 or 10 years ago I would have had no idea what was going on in Oregon, Washington, Virginia, Florida etc… like I do now. I read every day about horrors that are happening all over this beloved country. A lot of us are drawn here to Blinks home because we can discuss this in a very caring, sane place. If media can now bring these terrible crimes to our attention than we need to use that to open up our minds. This may be out there but I do think things are a little worse now because I think as a society we are loosing our religious values. Do on to others was a motto I grew up under and believed. Parents are so busy now that I do not think as many children have been taught this. You do not need to go to church to understand kindness. My family was not a regular church going group yet I still grew up learning about treating people fairly and giving back to others as well as not always putting my needs first. Drugs are destroying so many of our youth and I say this as one that has not been an angel yet I would, I believe, lay my life down for someone else knowing that cosmically it would be the correct thing to do. Evil is like a magnet and it attracts other evil. Kindness is like a magnet also. If you are a good person you will want to be with other good people. If you are evil than that is the type of people you will want around you. Maybe people have more chances to hook up with other evil people these days,IDK. We as a society are learning if we want something we want it now quick and easy and do not care what we do to get it. We are loosing our work ethics as well as our religious values. In regards to the Powell family we can only hope that politically we understand that although parents have rights they should always be second to those of the children. I think this was lost and Charlie and Braden paid with their sweet lives. What can we do? Stay educated and learn. Someday we may be directly involved or have a chance to use this education to help someone else. The evil today is no more evil than the evil of the past but there is so much more acceptance of it now…We are entertained by violence just by clicking on the TV. Hopefully most of us are happy when the bad guy gets what is coming to them yet there are evil people that just do not have those same feelings. They cheer for the bad guy and try to be better at being bad than the bad guy was. JMO

I have read your post several times. You are to be commended for the work you do in the community. We live in a time where moms must often be outside the home soon after the birth of a child in order to earn or help to earn a living for the family.

Sixty or seventy years ago there were few moms who worked outside the home. That meant they were available every day to interact with their children and those in their neighborhood. This made a major difference in the safety of the neighborhood and the safety of children.

In addition, the mores of the general population allowed any adult to speak to a child about poor behavior. Also, most families were concerned about their children having proper manners and respectful behavior towards all adults. A mother or father recieving a report from a neighbor regarding one of their childrens poor behavior took it as an embarressment to the family.

Did this make a perfect community or neighborhood? Of course not, but it helped the children become better adults IMO.

We are all looking for better solutions for ourselves, our families and our communities. We live in a free society where each of us have an opportunity to do anything we want until we begin to impinge on the freedom of another. At that point, one must stop and reevaluate their freedoms limits in order to accommodate the other person. Unfortunately, not all are willing to stop and consider others.

Children are the key to a future society. If we adults are not able for various reasons to make children follow good behavior, then society begins to deteriorate.

Not all biological creators have the ability to become good parents. Unfortunately, babies do not arrive in the world with an owners manual. Parents must learn to be good parents while raising children.

Parents must then call on the skills or lack of skills that they observed with their parents and other family members and among the families in the community while they were growing up.

Sometimes we see children who have a propensity for just being disruptive in society. This may be caused by poor diet or just because they inherited a brain that is not exactly normal. What is normal regarding humans? No one knows. We can only observe and make decisions based on behavior.

Learning and helping others is a lifetime commitment that begins at an early age and IMO ends when we leave the planet.

After reading what Alina said in this article-I really think she has a lot more to lose when her dad goes to trial-perhaps her freedom too?

Saying that the evidence against Steve was fabricated by investigators? Seriously? She thinks they sat around gluing Susan’s head to naked pictures, etc.?

“What’s wrong Alina? Is there some stuff you contributed to that you know will come out soon?

Yeah. Among other things. I hope to have part 2 published by weeks end.

@Ode and @ATG – I just wanted to say thank you for your responses. I will definitely take away some insight from them. For what it is worth – I do get what you are saying. My own family is such a mess. And, I know with out a doubt that I will do everything in my power to make sure my son doesn’t encounter the same issues as I did. That being said – I am a working Mom but an active one.

I have so much ready to catch up on BOC. Thanks for letting me get all of that off my chest. It’s just really difficult sometimes to feel like you are making a difference – even when you want to. And, sometimes I do get a bit long winded. :)

In the state of Ohio visitation is supervised at the agency to prevent something like this. Why did the social worker go to the home anyhow? I wish these agency’s would use some “COMMOM SENSE” ONCE AND AWHILE. The mother is missing, nobody knows where she is….isn’t it better to be safe than sorry? I know it’s too late now, but, that is… JUST PLAIN S-T-U-P-I-D!
