No power expected anytime soon, fire on and generator running. Just checked our lovely neighbors across the street in their mid 80′s – who we actually woke up, lol.

I am thankful it was not worse, and praying for those who did not fare as well.

    Thanks all

No power and lost a few trees, but everyone is safe, thank you

  15. A Texas Grandfather says:

In looking at the radar time lapse, it appears that your area had the Northeast side of the storm and then a portion of the eye. Normally the strongest winds are in the SW side of a storm like this. There were no pictures of the backside available.

I was thinking about your dad and his safety. Glad to learn that you and your neighbors are all safe.

The coastal areas got a big hit. Houses floated off foundation and moved into streets. I saw a lot of this in Carla.

Gov. Christi was on Fox cabel this morning. He gave a good account of things. The more I see of this man, the more I am grateful for all of you living in New Jersey to have him as your governor.

    Stay safe!

Daddy is perfectly fine . My Mom and he had an underground macdaddy generator installed years ago after w had a bad storm and had no power for our family Christmas dinner.

We grilled , deep fried a turkey and washed dishes for 30 by hand, lol.

My Mother told him there was only one thing she ever wanted to be sure of one in 365 days. That she could cook Christmas dinner for our family. I did remind him yesterday where I had stored her flameless candles.

I have no cable so he called me to play christie on speaker.

Thank you for thinking of my Grizzwald, he is just fine dandy as he would tell you. That sweet man.

We did giggle when I said I told Mom to hide her eyes – they spent sooo much time in Cape May , we all used to vacation down there as a family when the kids were tots.

We love that community, I pray for a quick recovery for them all those effected by damage from the storm.

    Heart u.

    Mother (Nature).

NEW YORK (AP) – Millions of people from Maine to the Carolinas awoke Tuesday without electricity, and an eerily quiet New York City was all but closed off by car, train and air as superstorm Sandy steamed inland, still delivering punishing wind and rain. The U.S. death toll climbed to 39, many of the victims killed by falling trees.

The full extent of the damage in New Jersey, where the storm roared ashore Monday night with hurricane-force winds of 80 mph, was unclear. Police and fire officials, some with their own departments flooded, fanned out to rescue hundreds.

“We are in the midst of urban search and rescue. Our teams are moving as fast as they can,” Gov. Chris Christie said. “The devastation on the Jersey Shore is some of the worst we’ve ever seen. The cost of the storm is incalculable at this point.”

More than 8.2 million people across the East were without power. Airlines canceled more than 15,000 flights around the world, and it could be days before the mess is untangled and passengers can get where they’re going.

  28. A Texas Grandfather says:

This has been a rough lesson for those who had no experience with hurricanes.

Had a view this morning of a line of over a hundred with gasoline cans at a service station. Trying to get gas for their generators.

Having a generator and a good transfer swith system that will isolate your dwelling from the public power system is the only safe way to go.

Communities should learn that when wind speeds of sixty MPH are reached, it is time to shut down the electrical system. This will prevent a lot of damage.

EURO has that system inland at 981mb at 168 hrs, after being off the NC coast at 144 at 998mb.

I guess it strengthens as it heads N / NNE along the coast until landfall I guess on Long Island somewhere. Doesn’t look like a good setup for those already impacted by Sandy. Near freezing temps after center passes by.

Next thing to watch I’d say.

Are there any reports that the refineries at Marcus Hook are able to operate? The old Sun Oil refinery was shut down for a while due to EPA regulations.

Even if gasoline is available for transport via tanker truck, the service stations may not have backup power to operate the pumps. Our area is no different. One would think that after learning from disasters, the national marketers would have gasoline powered generators at the large stations.

All of this is dependent on the roads being passable for the trucks.

  33. A Texas Grandfather says:

The barometric pressure in a storm is a measurement for how strong the winds will be. Sandy did not have an extremely low pressure, but its area was very large. This means that the winds it did have were spread over many hours during its passing.

I tracked Carla via the automated weather stations and those that had personnel. The evening before it came ashore at Point Comfort,Tx. one of the automated (reached by telephone) stations was reporting 928 mb of pressure. This was 7 mb less than the official pressure of 935 mb assigned to the storm. Wind gusts at the airport in Victoria were up to 225 mph.

The real damage from Sandy is to be found associated with the storm surge at the coast lines. This new activity will probably dump a large amount of snow and really stress the already overloaded emergency systems.

We cannot control the weather, so everyone do what you can to protect yourselves and try to be safe.

    For gas lines in NJ.

  36. susanm says:

the gas was a huge problem in katrina ,too.people thought they were ok ,with their ,generators, until their generators ran out of gas. SOLAR generators? currently $2000.00.if this is the new weather trend, gas stations on coasts should be required to have emergency generators,as part of homeland security.i was looking for some simple lightweight indoor solar lights,to give as xmas presents to my family on the gulf coast ,and i couldnt find any, simple ones. there are heavy weight outdoor solar security lights.

    Fox News Article:

The National Weather Service predicted Sunday that a Nor’easter that could include gusts of up to 55 mph is likely to reach the area by Wednesday and could compound the havoc brought by last week’s violent weather.

“Prepare for more outages,” advised weather service meteorologist Joe Pollina. “Stay indoors. Stock up again.”

He said the new storm wouldn’t be nearly as strong as Sandy, but could pack winds “stronger than usual, even strong for a Nor’easter.”

I believe there is a definate bullseye in Jersey. Sheesh, now an earthquake? Blink I read that small earthquakes are more noticeable on the east coast vs the west coast, so of course this seems purty small to us here westerners, did you feel it?

We did not this time, I will spare the story of the last one, where I was sitting on my daughter’s bed studying a particularly creepy case and the bed moved so badly I thought someone was under it.

    B

  41. A Texas Grandfather says:

Our planet is a long way from being stable geologically or weather wise. I have never experienced a West Coast earthquake as many times as I have been in the area. I did experience movement in my office building in Houston when the big one hit Mexico City.

The new storm may cause some additional tree damage because of the recent stress. If it snows, there may be icing conditions as well.

Maybe most of the electrical systems will be operational by the time the new storm hits.

There are solar cells that will charge car batteries. They are not very fast so it is a iffy thing to depend on that. The best way if you can do it is to purchase a generator system that is fueled by LPG. The tank can be buried and a 250 gal. tank will run a 6,000 watt generator for nearly a month.

Agreed, but would not a propane option for some may be best . A good savings goal for families if it is not in the immediate budget.

  43. tiberious says:

It is most unforunate that they will be away from their homes for 6-8 months. Having lived through a terribly destructive flood I would have to say they really won’t end up keeping much,if anything, that they recover. They need to realize the health hazards that are associated with water damage such as this. With us we came to realize even though we cleaned and recleaned recovered items such as dinnerware that it just was a losing battle. In my area it has been 14 months and people are still waiting to hear about their fema aid. I hate to be such a bummer but I would hate for them to count on something that might not be coming. We all learned that flood insurance is really not worth the paper it’s written on. Fema states that contents of the basement aren’t covered because even a finished basement isn’t considered primary living space. Washers and driers are luxury items. They say that if you start repair work before you get their answer then you negate you claim. We got quite the education on fema. Unfortunately it really isn’t going to be their savior. I wish them well and think maybe they can blog with other flood victims outside their area so they can get some good valuable advice on how to proceed.

  44. tiberious says:

I feel bad about my previous post. I didn’t intend to sound so negative because a lot of good people donated their time, money and effort to help people that were in such dire straits. Many acts of kindnesses were given by these folks. I think I wanted them to know that it will be these acts of kindness that will help get them back on their feet. people really have a lot of goodness in them

  45. A Texas Grandfather says:

My concept of FEMA is a bunch of government do nothings that are lucky to know how to find their office building. They are a wasteful
bunch of people that just suck money out of the system.

Local people helping each other along with church and civic organizations are the ones who get things done. There is plenty of help from caring people living in areas outside the damaged area. Right now the cleanup effort is taking the time. Get the Red Cross out of the way and let the churches run the aid and food efforts.

The electrical systems in the NE are very old and in need of rebuilding. This has been known for at least forty years. Rights-of-way are not being kept clear of tree limbs and old brittle trees are not removed when they are known to be sick. The same is true of old power poles that get dried out and weak.

I appears that the snow was not as much as was predicted. Hopeful that things will improve soon. It is going to take a year to clean up the mess on the Jersey coast and on Staten Island.

There will be other storms that will affect the area in the near future. Weather operates in in cycles. We are now into a cycle that is the same as the 1930′s in temperature and rain. The storm cycle is very close to that of the 1950′s. The storm cycle will bring other storms to the area and the Sandy conditions may never be repeated. The next one could be a real hurricane of cat 4 winds that will make Sandy feel like a walk in the park.

Being prepared with food, water, fuel and medical supplies is the only way. Getting away from the coastal waters in plenty of time will save lives.

  46. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Blink

Your propane option is exactly what I was saying. Liquified Petroleum Gases (LPG)include butane, propane, iso-butane and iso-propane. All of these may be blended to produce a fuel that has specific temperature ranges and vapor pressures. The BTU content of butane is about 1400 per Cubic foot. Propane BTU content can be as high as 3,000 per cubic foot.

Propane is better than butane in cold climates due to its higher vapor pressure. Butane will liquify and have little gas at temperatures below 20 degrees F. Propane is also used to blend winter grade gasoline to improve the vapor pressure.

Natural gas (methane), if available, should be used to heat a building. With the right equipment, a generator set can be run on methane. Pipelines are underground and less likely to be damaged in a storm.

You are lucky in that you have a 24″ natural gas line North of you at Lambertsville and a 30″ line South and East at Linden. Getting natual gas should not be a problem.
