Nittany Nightmare Continues Past Sandusky: Former President Spanier Charged- NEW Charges for Curley and Schultz Filed

Happy Valley- PA On the heels of convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky’s transfer to his new home,  what most predicted would follow- has.

Former Penn State President Graham Spanier,  fired by the Penn State Board of Trust the same day as legendary late-Nittany Lions Coach Joe Paterno, is facing serious charges today filed by Sandusky’s prosecutors.

Spanier is facing counts of obstruction of justice,  perjury, conspiracy, endangering the welfare of children and failure to report allegations of child abuse.

Tim Curley and Gary Schultz,  who were facing perjury and charges based on “non-reporting”,  are now facing all five similar charges as Spanier-  additional filings occurred simultaneously.

Linda L. Kelly stated the men “used their positions to conceal and cover up for years the activities of a known child predator,” on Thursday following the announcement.

Lunsford’s enemy list might include Raykovitz.

    snips>

“Not one thing was said to us,” said Bradley P. Lunsford, a Centre County judge who served on the Second Mile board between 2001 and 2005. “Not a damn thing.” –

If more information had been given to board members, they “would have asked the follow-up question: Why? You don’t know? Who knows? Who can we talk to? Has this been reported to the police?” Lunsford said. “I guarantee you there would have been a competition among all those people to be the first to ask the question, `Why is he not allowed on campus?’”

Lunsford and four other former board members at The Second Mile point the finger at Jack Raykovitz, a close friend of Sandusky’s who ran the charity until resigning following the former coach’s Nov. 5 arrest. –

    See more at: http://www.boston.com/news/education/higher/articles/2011/12/19/former_2nd_mile_board_members_we_needed_to_know/?page=1#sthash.chDWZync.dpuf

In my view Raykovitz was never held accountable for the fact *he claimed*, as the leader of the organization that acted as a grooming pool for that monster- that he had no knowledge of Sandusky’s actions. I will never buy that.

In yet another twist, a player in the Penn State fallout of the Sandusky scandal is closely tied to the Lee case as well. PSU Trustee Anne Riley, who sat on the Board during the firing of Joe Paterno and Graham Spanier, has close connections with Lee. You will recall that Riley “voted” to fire Paterno, despite the fact that Paterno and his wife Sue did everything they could to save her dad’s life when he had collapsed in their kitchen (and later died), as detailed in Jay Paterno’s book “Paterno Legacy: Enduring Lessons from the Life and Death of My Father”. Mrs. Riley also just happened to sit on two local Boards with Mr Lee; the Boalsburg Heritage Museum Board and the Mount Nittany Conservacy Board. Not only did Mrs. Riley sit on multiple boards with Mr. Lee but a local source who attended State College Area High School where Riley taught for 30 years says that Riley brought Mr. Lee into the school and introduced him as her boyfriend.

  5. erose says:

Sorry to be kinda O/T, but I am fascinated. The mansion FB link doesn’t work anymore, but Anne Riley’s mother’s 80th B’day was at the mansion and Paterno was in attendance. FWIW, Anne Riley is the most solid link I have seen between Lee and Penn State.

Just something to think about. I wonder if Freeh ever asked Anne about Lee? We will find out. And everything I just said I know firsthand.

It is beyond the pale that she would have “missed” a similar story about a prominent employee at a place she was supposed to be managing.

Chris was charged in 2005. Anne, who had Chris in to her 9th grade English class to recruit docents for the museum, would know this.

Furthermore, You have to believe Anne was not more in tune with sexual assault allegations even though her ex boyfriend was Chris Lee.

“I’m not sure if this will be within this next week or the following week, but we’re working on it right now,” Glantz says.”

This story is ripe for another local news Pulitzer.
Leading off with a James Pitkin style, Willamette Week 2010-like article profiling in depth each player & their overlapping circles of government, business, professional, & neighborhood ties. Glantz and Exarchos are the most significant dating to the 90s intertwining govt & development. The Glantz’ partner Cantorna. peripheral satellites are Brennan G & Bostek. Then there’s Masorti and his DA-terminated coterie of Sloane, Marshall & Shutt. And Shubin co-defended on cases with Catorna (or was it Masorti. Then there’s profiles on Shutt. I cring for her thinking of that online Corinthian degree, Dick’s litigation, first secretarial job with a demanding DA 6 months after birth to a 3rd small boy, twitter & pinterest interests. And the Boalsburg set.. to inckude Glantz’ Johnson oartner. And the settlement biz. Then there are profiles on Lunsford, Miller, Boob, and there are the new ada gals to mentor. One could turn this into a book. The 2003-13 Criminal stats analysis above. Reading agendas & Planning Commission minutes especially for Glantz & Exarchos deals. A chaper on the Exarchos’ son’s escape from charges, unsettling some. Done Pitkin-style, a local Pulitzer. But Pitkin’s success got him terminated by the paper WW. So I doubt this story will be told. And I doubt Miller understands the true source of Exarchos’ & Glantz’ & Cantorna’s fear–which is not retaliatory imo but greed in jeopardy of outing.

I figured she had to be investigating the Commissioners, & imo the Sunshine Act is just a euphemism for deals behind closed doors.

This was planned & orchestrated. Glantz had no competence to suggest procedure on the spot. His comments
were the fruit of preplanning by a more facile brain than his imo. And he never discloses on the record that Cantorna is his for-profit business partner as well as Exarchos has hired him … and his son Brennan … to represent Exarchos at Planning Comm Hearings for project approvals.

  16. Rose says:

I’ve wondered who got this gang in over their heads & why.

But it is true Glantz has a long hx with Exarchos
& has lucratively served as his private attorney.
And Glantz is a spoke to Cantorna.
So ai guess the question is what are the common interests between
the apparent principals, Exarchos & Masorti?

@Rose, David is a Lee family name. Joyce Lee who was a peer of Anne Riley (co-teacher since the ’60′s and on the same boards with husband David as Lee and Riley) would probably be married to a cousin, if at all related. Lee’s family started Farmers High School which eventually became Penn State, maybe the heirs are accepted, and might account for them still being in the area.

Anne Riley was Mr. Penn State Football’s daughter (Ridge, and there is even an award named after him that one of Sandusky’s son’s won) and she thought of Lee as her boyfriend. It’s like the delusion of Dottie being Jerry’s wife. These people are intertwined and apparently they are either the Leave-it-to-Beaver Happy Valley delusionals or the dark ones like Lee and Sandusky who must have known each other and identified with each other.

Det Rickard is running as a Dem for Centre Cty Sheriff this year. Reps Exarchos & Steve D on the BoC would not be enthused. If he’s still the sole Bellefonte criminal detective, god help what the BoC are doing to his reputation before the election. And Exarchos’ axe to grind wrt his son likely touches the detective. BoComm minutes are very rarely amended, yet all three Jan 2015 BoComm
    meetings were amended.
A glance at Jan 20 fails to reveal what language was amended.

Line 21 reveals Exec Sessions on Jan 15 & 19 took place to discuss “legal issues.”
Normally Exec Sessions are reserved for personnel issues, altho legal issues are an appropriate reason
where a Board or the County is in jeopardy of being sued or is sued. It seems obvious the Solicitor conducted
the substance of those Exec Sessions. If the substance was not a personnel matter, or the BoComm’s
status as a defendant, it does seem those 2 Exec Sessions violated the Sunshine Act. It would be
good to know who was in attendance. If it was preplanning for Cantora, Glantz, & Exarcho’s
performance Jan 20 in making criminal accusation of the DA public, then the DA deserved notice if
the 20th’s planned discussion and to be afforded a right to be heard.

  36. Rose says:

Perhaps what is being added in these Jan minutes is whether or not any Exec Sessions occurred.
In the Jan 13 minutes Boyde also announces an Exec Session occurred on “legal issues.”
In the Jan 6 meeting Boyde announces no Exec Sessions have occurred.
It seems odd to announce a negative (no ExSess).

to the alleged Sunshine Act violations under DA investigation.

What does Chief Shawn Weaver have to gain by being made a political tool of the BoComm rather than letting the State Police take over, when in the press last year he said he has only 1 overburdened criminal detective?
Could it be he didn’t like Miller’s insistance Gricar go there. Or maybe she didn’t like how his Dept handled evidence against Alex Exarchos–maybe some evidence defect such that he couldn’t be prosecuted?

The 2 longtime Republican Commissioners keep using newbie Dem Pipes as the Board’s media mouthpiece in this matter.

He went from PSU grad & 5 guys burger professional
to failed State Repr candidate to a Commissioner’s career.
Kind of reminds me of Shutt’s careerpath: Dick’s salesgirl where in a suit against her emoyer she
claims she had no managerial duties (but her Linkedin differs), to online work skills, to her first secretarial job
(with the DA), which didn’t last.

  40. Rose says:

    The plot thickens.
Per Pipes, Belefonte police now also have Counsel.

& in less than a week, Shutt has gone from attorney Shubin who appeared before media at the Town mtg Jan 20, to a criminal defense attorney, Sean McGraw.
“Shutt’s lawyer Sean McGraw could not be reached for comment as of press time Tuesday.” (url above)

Whose choice is made even more interesting as Miller hired him as an ADA out of the public defenders in Jan 2010

He looks good, and he didn’t last as an ADA. I wonder if he reached out to Shutt, and why? Is there an underlying gradge against Miller? Did McGraw & Shutt cross paths at the worksite?

https://www.linkedin.com/pub/sean-mcgraw/74/7b/7b8 I see he was given a job by Cantorna temporarily & briefly (therefore sharing an office with Glantz) in April 2013 until he could get on permanently with Shubin. Imo he would have been the one to tell Glantz & Cantorna if Shutt was a disgruntled employee and a weak link to be exploited to Miller. April 2013 for 6 months would’ve been the time period of Cantorna’s child abuser defense referred to in Miller’s petition. Perhaps McGraw assisted. He is good; Shutt is lucky. He will also cost money, so imo Shubin is preparing another class action suit for her. I hope the BoComm ensured the Town has a hefty insurance policy, but they seem to nickel & dime where they shoukdn’t.

This case reminds me of the Sandusky scrum.

You are not kidding Rose- I sincerely hope Shutt was being truthful and was not put up to something over all this mess.

  41. Rose says:

ADA departures under Miller like Sloane, Marshall, & McGraw seem to find their way temporarily
to Masorti or Cantorna until they can either get a permanent ongoing defense employer or get disbarred in Sloane’s case.

  42. Rose says:

    new business Pt 4.
    The BoComm gave McGraw a
private business contract to act as a public defender
at least by Jan 2015 & renewed it in 2015. Good hire,
but I guess his office space sharer Glantz put him forward
    http://centrecountypa.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/01062015-266

  43. Rose says:

typo correction: that’s BoComm contracted with Mcgraw at least by Jan 2014.

  44. Rose says:

looks like McGraw’s last significant ADA trial was Phillip Guinta, sentenced 3/6/13.
I can’t get onto Centre DT to read about it though.
Maybe he didn’t like stiff sentences like Cantorna.

  45. Rose says:

Today I heard a snippet of Loretta Lynn’s AG confirmation hearing (in which she managed to please J Sessions), the US Atty in Manhattan was being questioned about working together with local DAs. The example she gave of close working relationships was jointly handling a significant spike in prescription drug crime which leads as well to heroin dependence.

So I looked to see if Centre County has that problem on Miller’s plate, and indeed it does:
    http://www.statecollege.com/mobile/news/local-news/centre-county-sees-spike-in-heroinrelated-deaths,1452901/
And since unlike Madeira she goes to trial rather than pleads, and is tough on sentencing, the Dec 2013 appeal of K Heverly’s case before J Ruest being an example, those involved in Centre Cty’s drug trade have reason to want her out, as they did Gricar.

news on PA prosecutions of that nature,
a Centre Cty inmate among them
22 charged in prescription drug forgery ring that operated in 44 counties
    January 21, 2015
    http://m.poconorecord.com/article/20150121/NEWS/150129870?template=printart

That makes taking all the DA’s electronics, including info about confidential drug case informants, very suspicious, and reminds me of the destruction of Gricar’s hard drive with same type of info, likely destroyed by his murderer.

  46. Rose says:

Apparently, the warrant is on Centre Daily Times
(I can’t access to review; CDT needs its own
freedom of info to public docs.)

  47. Rose says:

One does not have to be put up to something
if one is inexperienced (in the job),
dim (just my opinion), & develops a grudge
against employers when she feels misused
or unjustifiably let go. & is fairly grandiose,
say about material ambitions or para credentials.

Based on public info, my guess is the staff
    did do campaign typing.

It is reasonabke an inexperienced new secretary woukd be
told to go look at former bail reduction orders to learn how type
    one, and then do so.
It looks like the bail reduction order was part of a joint DA-State Police plan
to hide a confidential witness under an assumed name in another
prison for his safety, while pretending he was free on bail, and it was
necessary to mislead attorneys who’d check out that story by filing the
bail reduction with the prothonotary. It comes down to a she said-she said on the
signature. Judges get stacks of these housekeeping matters to sign at once, and knowing how
tough Miller is on sentencing & bail, imo Ruest woukd’ve trusted her & sugned without a second thought.
As for Shutt, feeling aggrieved, it is a tale likely rooted in truth that coukd have growth embellished
elements in her mind over the months. I am sure she feels righteous.
The proper course for Masorti, however, was a bar complaint.

  48. Rose says:

I would like to know more about Chief Shawn Weaver, because clearly the campaign thing belongs with the OAG & State Police. I am wondering if he predated Gricar, and if Gricar kept those confidential drug investigations well away from Bellefonte PD. My bet is he did. Iirc, he worked with State Police & OAG. The question is why avoid Bellefonte PD in these cases? Det. Matt R looked like a good man. Wondering if he’s still there.
