Nittany Nightmare Continues Past Sandusky: Former President Spanier Charged- NEW Charges for Curley and Schultz Filed

Happy Valley- PA On the heels of convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky’s transfer to his new home,  what most predicted would follow- has.

Former Penn State President Graham Spanier,  fired by the Penn State Board of Trust the same day as legendary late-Nittany Lions Coach Joe Paterno, is facing serious charges today filed by Sandusky’s prosecutors.

Spanier is facing counts of obstruction of justice,  perjury, conspiracy, endangering the welfare of children and failure to report allegations of child abuse.

Tim Curley and Gary Schultz,  who were facing perjury and charges based on “non-reporting”,  are now facing all five similar charges as Spanier-  additional filings occurred simultaneously.

Linda L. Kelly stated the men “used their positions to conceal and cover up for years the activities of a known child predator,” on Thursday following the announcement.

IDK what to make of Spanier either, but note a case against a Penn State prof in 2005.

    snip>

Paul McLaughlin said he experienced a prime example of that habit of closing ranks. A decade ago, he says, he told Penn State officials, including Spanier, a horrific story: years before, when he was a boy, a professor had sexually molested him repeatedly, sometimes on the Penn State campus. He even said he had a tape recording in which the professor, who still taught at the university, admitted to the abuse.

But McLaughlin said he was rebuffed.

“He told me whatever I wanted to get from the school, I wasn’t going to get it, and this was a guy with an impeccable reputation, and unless he was convicted of a crime, they weren’t interested,” McLaughlin, now 45 and a private investigator in Phoenix, recalled of his short phone conversation with Spanier. “When I offered to send him the tape, he said, ‘Don’t bother.’ That was his exact words.”

The professor was charged in 2005 with abusing McLaughlin, but the charges were later dropped.

It would seem they were both in the same department, Spanier working on child abuse issues of which he was a victim, and Neisworth who was working on autism in children.

Now a blast from our past, could they all have been in the same department with Patrick Wardell?

So hard to be sure as info on Neisworth is limited, though I do remember a comment from eons ago that said the nexus of all of this was in the Health and Human Development Department.

That Family Reunification Program, plus many other mental health services, is run by private corp Wardell and Associates (doing business as Family Intervention Crisis Services). W&Assoc is registered with PA Sec of State; pretty old corp.

There are 3-4 principals now, but Patrick Wardell, the founder, is not running it anymore. He says he’s still on the Board. Has 2 residences, 1 in Hawaii (where he has a real estate license) and 1 in Port____, PA (can’t remember). He was/still is(?) professor emeritus (social work) at LockHaven University in PA.

    I’ll paraphrase, for copyright reasons.

From 1974 – 1988: Says he was an Asst Professor of Social Work (I think that was the LockHaven gig). Also that he taught practice classes and directed and coordinated field instruction. And I think that was at Penn State, the Univ Pk campus.

Until last November, Spanier had an enviable reputation. He joined the Penn State faculty in 1973, as a sociology professor specializing in research on family dysfunction, including child abuse. Over the course of a decade, he moved into university administration, eventually becoming associate dean of a major undergraduate college at Penn State. In 1982, he became vice provost at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, then became provost at Oregon State. He spent four years as chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, then became president of Penn State, in 1995.

This is my suggestion, FWIW, I would do a set of “Lombardi diagrams” of all the information to date. When these are done, the diagrams speak for themselves, and cannot be denied. You will see the relationships yourselves in a way that will shock even those know the bottom lines here. To make one of these, it’s art and a strict method, strict method and art. Create a timeline, establish entities on the timeline, and use arrows to show (and only show) money flows first. Then you do another one that shows the “child flows”. Then superimpose. Since there are so many facts to work with, start with placing each fact on a card as he did. PS I’ll warn ya ahead of time from personal exp. those who are trained to turn data points to litigation quality proof may want to think of extra life insurance.

@erose. for that quote of Spanier, one only has McLaughlin’s word as mediated by press.
if there is a kernal of truth, Spanier would be quite right that McLaughlin needed to take his allegation not to PSU but to the DA, cooperate with charges, and seek a conviction. Without a conviction, any Univ could not act against a tenured professor.
