Missing From UVA : Hannah Elizabeth Graham
Charlottesville, VA- Second year University of Virginia student Hannah Graham texted her friends last Saturday morning at approximately 1:20 AM- saying she was lost in the area of Wertland Street.
She has not been heard from since. According to Charlottesville Police Captain Gary Pleasants, it is believed Ms. Graham was intoxicated at the time of her disappearance and may have been on her way to a party but did not arrive.
In recently released images of Graham leaving her apartment at approximately 9:30PM Friday evening, she is shown wearing black skinny pants and a gold and black mesh crop-top, beige shoes or sneakers.
Ms. Graham’s disappearance is not related to a 2013 teen runaway from Indiana with the same name.
The disappearance of Ms. Graham comes on the heels of the recently adjudicated murder trial of Alexis Murphy , the disappearance on the same date as Ms. Graham in 2010 of Samantha Clark and of the course the unsolved murder of Morgan Harrington, who disappeared from John Paul Jones arena in October 2009 and later found murdered in January 2010 on Anchorage Farm in Albemarle County.
In Ms. Harrington’s case, the DNA profile and sketch of the suspect in her murder as well as a rape in Fairfax county in September 2005 was released, but he has not been identified by name or captured.

Ms. Murphy’s remains have never been recovered and Ms. Clark is still missing, also believed to also be a victim of Randy Allen Taylor, currently serving a life sentence for Murphy’s kidnapping and murder.
Hannah Graham is described as 5’11 tall, with light brown hair and blue eyes. Police are asking anyone with information regarding her disappearance to call the Charlottesville Police Department at 434-970-3280 or CrimeStoppers at 434-977-4000.

I still don’t understand how this guy was allowed a job at UVA Hospital – even being just an orderly – wouldn’t a background check have prohibited his employment?
The woman that recognized Matthew on the beach in Texas said that he slammed on his brakes and brought the car to a halt in the sand – and it was then she recognized him as the man suspected of abducting the missing University of Virginia student.

This reminds me to hold any presumptions about JLM until all the facts are gathered. Who knows why he slammed his brakes and did a double take? Could it be that he doesn’t actually know where she is? Could it be that he *does* and her memory is haunting him?
I’m not getting the predator vibes that others are picking up from him. Something about his voice and expressions comes off much more low-key, non-threatening…gentle giant even.
This may be how other women perceive him. And if in fact he is a predator, those traits might be exactly what allows women to let their guard down with him. But as for now, I don’t know that he’s a predator. I’m keeping my mind wide open until all the facts are in.
I know a few people have questioned whether or not the dreads could be a wig. Now that it appears that its not, do we know how recent Mr. Matthew started wearing them? I wonder if it was intentional to avoid recognition from all the wanted posters of sketch?

Im glad to know that The Harringtons and the FF victim will be told and that they will be involved to some degree- at the appropriate time- if He is Sketch or for that matter if he turns out to be the perp in the taxi assaults glad to know those victims will be notified/involved as well.

That is my understanding as well. One thing I also wish to mention is that in some cultures the stigma of rape or in her case sexual assault/rape can be grounds for murder or other particularly heinous acts on a victim as it is considered a “shame on the family”- if you can believe that. It is a horrific practice, but it absolutely exists- I want to say her Nationality or country of origin may make that a consideration if she is there.

@mom3.0, Even if there is a DNA match to other cases, I think they would be doing a lot of legwork before prosecutung those cases. They would want to know, if possible, where Matthew was on those occasions, who he was with, etc. If there is a match at this time, they can take time to be thorough bc he is in custody and not going anywhere anytime soon. And as Blink said, there would need to be coordination among the jurisdictions about when and how to prosecute.
@rose. The fall pattern could be early school year, drunk and vulnerable women but I would guess something more if all of these are linked. Something traumatic in childhood at this time of year. CNU released info that Matthew left that school on October 15, 2003 and noted that it was unusual for a student to leave at that point in a semester. I wonder about his base level of intelligence, his childhood, and head injuries associated with football…a neuropsych evaluation might shed light on the apparent dichotomy in his personality, the apparent lack of impluse control, lack of boundaries, etc. Something is not right, imo, and I wonder about what steps were taken to address these issues or if there was just a huge level of denial.

JM is back in Virginia. Has been booked and moved to the county jail.
There is a general aviation airport at Galveston with a 6,000 ft. runway that is suitable for landing a small jet aircraft or turboprop. That is probably how he was transported.
They have a charge that will keep him behind bars while the investigation proceeds. The DA should not be in a hurry to try this case. Let him sit there as long as necessary to work on finding Hannah and trying to tie him into some of the other missing persons cases.
There is information that he assaulted a woman in a bar earlier in the evening that required hospital care for her. Those charges should be added to what is already charged. A woman was forced to endure his hands on her earlier at the Tempo the same evening. Where was the bouncer for Tempo? That is two women who had to endure unwanted advances prior to Hannah. Why was LE not called and JM in jail for either of these two assaults?
LE cannot do their job properly if business owners and other citizens allow a big guy like JM behave as he did. This guy has obviously taken advantage of people not willing to put a stop to his bad behavior.
Ode, I am so sorry for your loss of your beloved Lab. They are such loving, dutiful, and loyal dogs with hearts of gold. Grace is our black Lab and she loves exploring the hills near own home; hence “GraceintheHills”.

to me Rader does seem to be almost excusing the crime as some sort of accident- as if he is speaking to a once tipster or perp who once called in and spoke of something getting outof hand that ended in Morgans death.

I am heartsick over this case (as I was for Morgan Harrington) and hope that with this arrest, there has been a major breakthrough.

I very much respect the fact that Liberty U expelled this violent SOB. They knew he was guilty and turned him over to Lynchburg police. The university did everything right IMHO but how the hell did he get to play again (probably on full scholarship) for another university? Did the second U even call Liberty? Shame on them!!!!! What will it take for a search warrant of family members’ homes & property.
To me, JM might think a family crawl space safe.
An article on JM supporters mentioned a female who said she was in a “learning disabilities program” with him in el ed. Imo one has to “stand out” to get program services in el ed, and not via a low IQ. In fact there is a discrepancy
between a normal IQ but much lower performance. His responses in the TX Courtroom suggest he cannot read
chunks of information and has difficulty with oral language processing as well. That does not mean a lower IQ.
The lack of awareness of physical boundaries Cory Barefoot picked up on can fit an LD profile as well. In my opinion, it is unfortunate someone with preexisting cognitive problems in school was encouraged to play football as a path forward.
Do you know if any of the searchers have found any items relative to this case. I also wanted to know what information had been retrieved from both phones?
I feel like he is the sketch and now he is off the streets of Charlottesville and maybe some peace for the Harringtons. We will see.
If I recall correctly, Morgan’s shirt was found near JM’s apartment? IMO it was put there, not by the perp, but by friends/roommates/etc who wanted to expose him but were/are fearful of repercussions.
I will forever remember Gil saying “He broke all of Morgan’s bones”……it took a big individual to do what was done to Morgan. Morgan, like Hannah, would have fought him till the end.
Two beautiful girls with so much hope and so much to offer the world. I hope the monster responsible for their untimely death is prosecuted and found guilty.

I’ve spent my whole Saturday researching the past of that area. It is quite compelling. The location of Morgan’s body making it impossible not to research further. I am uncertain if this is off topic or on……I guess only time will tell. I have a question for locals. How well known or present is the past in that county today?
For example, I lived in one town that the history of the area was celebrated every year with festival and school children did walking tours of the town going through the tales and homes that had been there for 150 years. In the town I currently live in, only history buffs would have a clue. I wondered what it was like in that area of VA?

Mathew was terminated from the Newport team 9/12 and the school 10/15.
Dates suggest some infraction of a team or school rule to me, followed by a hearing process.

While, as commented by many, JM has some similar features to Sketch, he has such a baby face, while Sketch is overall portrayed as mature and slightly menacing. It is easier to understand how someone would agree to be helped by JM when they are not at their most alert, especially if he had a taxi or a hospital ID.
Do you know if Hannah and Jessee were actually seen in the Tempo. I keep hearing conflicting reports. Why would he have gone in and had two drinks while she waited outside? If they were inside together they would certainly stick out in the crowd.
Good question Jane- allow me to weigh in with my opinion- It is my belief she was definitely inside Tempo’s establishment. I have seen the reports that staff does not recall seeing her inside, but only walking away from Tempo and the Owner’s adamance that she was not. I personally do not believe that is anything other than CYA with a clearly inebriated and “harassing” JLM, and then you have Hannah ostensibly unable to walk herself- and via a server’s own words- recalling she looked very drunk.
I do not believe that receipts made available from Tempo would not indicate what was purchased- I am aware of their POS system so I can tell you that is not accurate.

That is correct. Because the rest of her jewelry was accounted for, unlike others, I don’t put great stock in the fact that it has not been found and it was kept as some sort of a trophy that might ultimately finger sketch- I think it more likely was removed in some fashion during the attack.

JM could be dyslexic both with speech and reading. Many people have that problem. It can be corrected sometimes by proper eyewear. However, speech dyslexia is much more difficult to correct.
I have a very good friend that has corrected his visual dyslexia with glasses and reading exercises. He is a very successful business man.
Mrs. ATG has verbal dyslexia and she often reverses things she hears or speaks. We have learned to listen carefully to her feed back in a
conversation.
I hope that every agency that has anything relating to JM will co-operate with C’ville PD in this case. They also need to really do extensive checking on all his family.friends and co-workers. This needs to extend back to the time he was a freshman in high school.
Schools are very sensitive to any allegations against members of their sports teams. Most will bend over backwards to hush up something that could stain their reputation. This begins in high schools and extends to colleges and universities.
We had the case at UVA where the big drunk La cross player was beating on his girl friend and finally because she could not get help, he managed to beat her to death. The University should have had a lot of heads to roll for that one. Instead, the board sat on their hands claiming zero responsibility. That attitude is exactly what allowed Penn. State to let a Jerry Sandusky be a member of their athletic staff for years and years.

Rose- Thank you very much for your 3:53 am comment today answering my questions regarding Jesse’s second college Newport.
YES his speedy departure mid fall term in Newport News with “privacy records sealed” is a huge red flag. I am anxious to hear what provoked his speedy departure and venture to guess that it was some sort of gross impropriety on Jesse’s part involving unlawful behavior if not another accusation of sexual assault.
Very very odd and telling.
I hope a good sleuth/ reporter can find some of his buddies from NN to clarify.
Also, I’m very anxious to know Jesse’s whereabouts and school or job history between his leaving Newport News 10/03 and his being hired to drive a taxi cab in Charlottesville (around 07 if I’m not mistaken.)

FBI already knows if he turned off his phone when he disabled Hannah’s to avoid detection.
I would send teams/ put up lots of posters in rural W. Virginia too. It’s not far at all from Charlottesville to W. Va border- one and a half hours. Also, send for records at any campsites in VA and W VA under alias “George Carr” if he was really MIA from Friday night to late Sunday.
I’m sure FBI is analyzing dirt from his tires/ wheel beds etc. but I wouldn’t rule out campsites, national parks and such as far as where he could have taken Hannah.
One other question I have- want clarification on- Was his orange Chrysler parked at his apartment when the warrant was served for it in the middle of the night or was it again parked near the Mall in Charlottesville? I thought I read somewhere that the orange car was “re-parked” near the mall.
I’m probably jumping to wishful conclusions but the intent professional-looking glossy FBI released photos of Matthew being returned by private jet “hands on” with the three FBI gentlemen leads me to believe they have already matched Jesse’s DNA with sketch etc.
The FBI has said they released said photos because of how “high profile” this case is. I may be reaching but I think that they already know how very very “high profile” it will be when the puzzle is completed and they are very proud of this capture- hands on, cuffed and shackled.
Also, I can’t help but think (wishfully) that “sketch” – when the sketch came out @ 2010- has other DNA matches in CODIS that the public is completely unaware of. The FBI was on this case FAST. They know a lot and as Blink said they are working on strategy for charges, concentrating on finding Hannah & determining when to reveal more to the public.
All of that said, I’m praying fervently for Jesse’s family who appear to be strong Christians and very good decent people. His mama (like Joran’s mama) has to know deep down that he’s been troubled. I pray she speaks to the detectives and attempts to get her son to at the very least reveal Hannah’s location. His family and loving friends seem to me to be the type who care about justice and truth. I think he must have simply stolen his sweet sister’s blue car (which she likely needed desperately for work and taking her child to school.) I can’t imagine that his family has aided him in his escape etc. At the same time, I’ve been to Bolivar beach and CAN’T IMAGINE a better hiding place. It’s a super super remote bit of a hippy/weirdo haven. I wonder if he’s somehow been there before or if someone tipped him off to go there. If Jesse found Bolivar on his own, he is indeed a very very sharp cookie in some of his planning.

I have so many thoughts about JLM, Morgan and Hannah and I find myself writing little notes at my desk when something pops in my head and that’s what happened Friday…in reading the pleas made by LE it was apparent their profile was for someone remorseful. How could LE know that with only one living victim/witness know that? Either the offender made some sort of apology before, during or after the attack or the offender has made other unknown contact with LE that we are not privy to. I believe LE’s message would be totally different if they were targeting someone with sociopathic personality traits (i.e., having no remorse).
Also, has anyone considered that JLM may have a form of autism? The Coy Barefoot article peaked my interest in this possibility when several people described his behavior as aggressive, awkward and not commensurate with the social setting. Having a nephew with autism and long before he had an official diagnosis (he’s high level/high functioning) we struggled to understand why he escalated physically and emotionally in social settings. Could the reason for a special education setting be autism as well?

Also, will his sister face any charges in JM taking off with her car? If it were stolen, it would have been reported. So, I’m assuming she was well aware he had fled in her vehicle.

Earlier mention of Morgan’s t-shirt and how it may have been kept as a trophy/memento. This made me think of Morgan’s “chain-link” necklace, given to her by her brother, which has never been recovered. Keeping fingers crossed that it was carried out of JLM’s apartment in one of those evidence bags or is now recognized by one of his family members…. Hoping for multiple pieces of evidence to link cases.

IMO LE should ask all property owners is a fifty mile radius to check their fence lines at the property line and all cross fences. Small bodies of water such as creek beds and ponds or small lakes such as the one West of where Morgan’s body by placing a dam across the Hardware river (actually a small creek). The North Garden and Red Hill Road areas should be carefully searched.
Many of the victims listed as possibly connected, went missing in Spring or Fall on a Saturday

I guess it’s possible this guy has autism, dyslexia or some sort of learning disability. I definitely think it’s possible, If he is in fact Hannah’s abductor, which I do feel to be true, that he has some sort of religious “obsession” for lack of a better word. Even as an athlete I’d think attending Liberty he would be saturated with religious material, not that that’s a bad thing, but it could be a problem for some mentally or emotionally unstable people). Same with Covenant School. Is it a private Christian school? I would think he’d be able to play football at other small colleges if he was good enough for Liberty, and could volunteer at any high school. Hopefully, if he feels remorse for his actions, that he’s fighting his “demons”, he may be persuaded to confess his sins and cleanse his conscience by telling the police where Hannah is.

OK, how did JM get to or find remote Bolivar Beach from Charlottesville VA? Who is “George Carr”?
I find it extremely difficult to believe that this guy, if it is sketch, has been potentially pretty amazingly active in his poor behavior and not caught. Ends up in a remote location on the Texas Gulf Coast and I’m supposed to believe he is some kind of gentle giant with LD if not some other diagnosis?

I would like to see more pictures of JM from around the time of the attack on the woman which produced the sketch. A lot of posters are seeing similarities that I just am not. IMO:
- Sketch’s eyes are much wider set than JM’s. The set of your eyes does not change with weight change. For me, this is the biggest difference.
- Sketch’s eyes more almond shaped than JM’s;
- JM’s eyebrows shorter and bushier than Sketch;
- Sketch has wider forehead than JM.
- JM has fuller lips than Sketch. I know it is hard to tell because they both have full lips, but he does.
- Sketch has wider cheekbones than JM.
- JM has a bigger chin than Sketch.
All I am seeing is that they are both black with full lips and the same nose. A lot of black men have full lips and that nose. (In fact, when I saw that sketch, I thought it looked a little like my boyfriend’s brother, who has never been anywhere near Virginia). Maybe it is because I see black faces every day, all day in my personal life, and because my boyfriend has a twin that I once thought was identical and now can absolutely see the differences. Also don’t take this as me saying I don’t think he killed Morgan Harrington or raped the other victim. He very well could have. I just don’t think that conclusion should be based entirely on the sketch.

I must have missed this. Where was the info that JM”s family owned a lot of property in VA? I’m just surprised considering VA’s slavery past – a black family with lots of land would be very unusual for that region.
Does anyone know the family’s background, their businesses, landowning history, roots in slavery, possibly the Matthews name in that region would give a hint, if there were any Matthews plantations or slaveowners in the VA historical record?

One more crazy comment. One of the large tracts of land owned by the Lewis family in that area was named Belvoir. Different I know from Bolivar beach but to my aging brain, damn similar.

Just would like to point out a possible connection I just found between JM and Anchorage Farm. In this article, Longo father states that he liked to fish, and they want some leads on where he liked to fish:

On Anchorage Farm lies the Hardware River. Found the following passage on fishing in the Hardware River:
“The Hardware River. Delayed Harvest Section in Fluvanna County is an underutilized stream that offers some great fishing in the Piedmont Region. Located about 25 miles south and east of Charlottesville, the Hardware River flows out of the heavily wooded rolling hills of southern Albemarle County and drains into the James River several miles east of Scottsville.”
Correct, as I posted yesterday, there is fishing involved, and it was intentional.

It is underutilized, but maybe JM liked to fish where no one else did. And maybe through fishing, this is where he found the spot to put MH on Anchorage Farm. And Longo’s statement implied we should be following the river…

The FBI has said they released said photos because of how “high profile” this case is. I may be reaching but I think that they already know how very very “high profile” it will be when the puzzle is completed and they are very proud of this capture- hands on, cuffed and shackled.
Also, I can’t help but think (wishfully) that “sketch” – when the sketch came out @ 2010- has other DNA matches in CODIS that the public is completely unaware of.

Aunt Annie, I agree so much with all you said. The FBI had a vested interest in Morgan’s case as demonstrated in the national billboard campaign with the picture of sketch. I actually saw one of the billboards several states away from Virginia.
I almost fell out of my chair when chief Longo mentioned the
“wild life cameras” because of all the early discussion here at Blink’s place about them. It seems to me we have gone full circle here. Morgan is why I found Blink’s place. It is time now to get the answers we have been looking for the last 5 years. I am just so sad that another girl, Hannah Elizabeth Graham, may have lost her life to the monster we have all been looking for the last 5 years.
Just wanted to say thanks Ode- I took a lot of chit about that article- As we go through the process now, will be able to discuss some aspects I never could in detail- hopefully in an effort to find Hannah and aid other cold cases.

I think it is important to remember that at the time Matthew left town, there was no arrest warrant for abduction. That warrant was issued days later. The reckless warrants may have been outstanding when he left town but that is a separate case. This is an important distinctiion in terms of family members being accused of assisting him, and also in terms of evidence at Mattew’s trial, if there is one.
Agreed except to say that even though the warrants for reckless driving are misdy’s- they did come with what is called “extradition approvements”. That means that it is a permission slip for any state to detain him ( in the very least). I admit it is the first time I have ever, ever seen a APB/BOLO on such initial charges, but what I can tell you in retrospect there was really no doubt based on information that is not yet public ( not DNA) that Matthew was subject to both State and local warrants- in LE terms- we want this guy, because we don’t want it public why yet, but if you have access to accurint ( or whatever db) you can read between the lines.
Lastly- I don’t think we know for sure when Matthew left town.
