Dr. Phil Show Hosts Missing Portland Child Kyron Horman’s Step Mom Terri Horman Over Two Episodes

I have been covering this case since Kyron Horman disappeared from Skyline School in June, 2010.    Like most missing persons cases I have covered in the past,  I am of the strong opinion that best efforts at the truth are the only way to propel investigations that, similarly to Kyron’s, have gone cold for one reason or another.   This approach has worked in resolving some of my previous cases.    I am proud of that.  I remain steadfast to the integrity involved in those and future cases.

Over the past 10 months (or so) I have been developing an updated series on Kyron’s case to include my multiple interviews with Kyron’s step-mom,  Terri Horman.   Needless to say as she was the subject of at least three simultaneous cases before an Oregon court and remains a person of interest by the agency investigating her sons disappearance, this has been an arduous and sometimes delicate journey.    Ms. Horman’s experiences during the ongoing investigation of the disappearance of Kyron Horman are critically important to propelling his case and with great hope- finding the truth about what happened to this cherubic and innocent child.    There are dozens of sources,  collateral interviews, forensic experts and legal analysts that also contribute to my series and have done so because of their belief that my motivation is to bring to light information and opinions in such a way that would almost “require” a focused review of Kyron’s case and the likely shaking of that proverbial tree everyone talks about.

Set to publish about 6-ish weeks ago I was asked to postpone the first installment of the series, which I did.  I subsequently learned Ms. Horman was participating in the Dr. Phil program after she completed taping.  Dr. Phils producers were well aware that Ms. Horman had interviewed with me extensively, and anticipated my series would be publishing information that was not known to the public previously in the days prior to her scheduled episode.    When Ms. Horman conveyed to me that she feels obligated to speak out about “her son” in any national medium that will have her,   I most certainly respected that.  I still do.

While Dr. Phil seems like a gregarious fellow for sure,   I have zero interest in being associated with his program, nor do I believe his shows content is designed to do any furtherance of investigation or truth.  There is much concern (although I have no affiliation to the show whatsoever) that the timing of the publication of my series on the Kyron Horman matter might be interpreted differently or inadvertently contribute to the programs content or audience reactions.     Not what I signed on for.   A missing 7 year old boy six years running is not a framework for entertaining a target audience.   He is not fodder for online social media bully campaigns- yet it occurs.

I will be publishing my series on Kyron’s case at a later date, in it’s entirety with no editing adjustments as a result of any of the appearances on Dr. Phil.   I appreciate your patience and your understanding.   Feel free to discuss the show below.

Congrats to Terri on her wedding, but she should consider locking down her social media sites unless she is just saying to her stalkers she has nothing to hide.

I think Terri is plenty savvy these days about who can and cant access things on social media. I also think she operates under the auspice that all of her communication devices are likely being monitored by LE- legally or illegally.

Must be a slow news day in Oregon. If TMH getting married is news, why didn’t Kaine’s new marriage make the news? This was simply the media doing their part to keep her privacy invaded, whilst raking in click $$.

I too don’t understand DY’s gofundme $$. Why hasn’t it been used to up the reward for a tip that will lead to finding this missing child? Almost 8 years gone and the reward remains unchanged since it was first offered.

This crime just went off so unhitched, coupled with the mysterious missing school information stinks of inside job to me. JMO

Glad your son wasn’t among the abused. Typical pedo behavior, befriending the children first, volunteering with kid groups, etc. I don’t trust anybody anymore, and I’m glad most all my grandkids are grown. (Though I did just become a great grandma!) :)

Maybe this kind of stuff was going on decades ago, but I don’t recall it ever being so prolific. I feel badly for the children who are growing up during such a scary time in our world. Such a difference since the 50′s/60′s when I grew up. For example, I participated in only one protest when I was a teenager. You know what it was, it’s so juxtaposed to what’s going on today, it’s comical. They wanted to build a fence around our high school, which would be locked during school hours, and you would have to go through the office and get permission to leave. I protested that we were losing our open campus!! We used to be able to walk off campus and go eat at local burger joint or wherever. They wanted to do it (and did do it after all), because back in the 60′s kids were going off at lunch time and coming back to school stoned or high on something. Ruined it for all of us! And I’m sure Der Wienerschnitzel
closed down due to my inability to have lunch there!!!

Iboshi would word smith everything she said along with taking things out of context and asking leading questions. If i was Terri I would never consent to an interview with any local Portland media outlets and especially not Iboshi. I wouldn’t put it past Iboshi to feign friendship or sympathy toward Terri so he could snare her in an interview.

I’ll bet Houze has told he the same.

Terri has told me implicitly that she has no intention of interviewing with any Portland/local media whatsoever.

    Your protest story is funny.

I never went to school on a campus that was fenced. In fact, the school grounds were used after school by the neighborhood children and youths as a playground. My grammar school, built in 1923, did not have a cafeteria until I was in fourth grade. All children either brought their lunch or went home for lunch. Grammar school was grades one through seven. High School was grades eight through eleven. The twelfth grade appeared in public schools in 1943 or 1944 depending on the state and school district.

Prior to the 1960′s sexual deviancy existed, but those types were shunned by the community where they lived. The older children were told by parents or someone else, that those people were dangerous and should be avoided. They were also taught that if one of these deviants were present, to watch them and keep the younger children away.

Congratulations on joining the great, great grandchild crowd. I joined that group twenty years ago. Two of our band members missed practice last night to attend the birthday party for the woman’s mother who celebrated 100 years.

“Putting Kyron’s recovery first above ego is long overdue.
    B”
Well, yeah. But the bios’ issue has always been,
it seems to me, putting recovery above
    “attention” & money rake-ins.

I know many people think I am too easy on them- or too optimistic in their motivations, I get that.

But what I would say to those friendly critics is that if you have never worked with a parent of a missing child, regardless of age, and had the horrific circumstance of having to inform them of recovery, and all that goes with that, it can seem odd on the surface that they are actually completely conflicted at times. They are conflicted differently and at different times within different cases where this has been a factor. In my first successful case it threw me off big time. In subsequent cases I made the issue a required upfront dialogue and agreement if I were to work on it. I call it my “Be careful what you wish for” conversation. One two occasions I respectfully declined to accept a case because I felt (for various private reasons) at least one parent did not seem “prepared” for any outcome developed by following the evidence. Did I blame them? Of course not- but it is my belief based on my experience that the readiness of a parent or loved one to deal with whatever the outcome is/was is essential to case progression. They were basically in a thought pattern (and emotional protection) of – I want my kid /loved one found if they are alive- but if it’s the worst, I would prefer to stay in emotional denial. Once again, no judgement from me on that- but there is no such thing as controlling the narrative and working similar cases-one must be completely neutral and completely ready to scrap everything and start over if dictated by the evidence.

In no way is it my intention to oversimplify this issue and its impact on both investigational outcome and recovery. What I can say with certainty is that everything that can be done to elevate this case is not being done- by Kyron’s biological parents AND the reasons for that may not be nefarious in any way- it may simply be self preservative in nature.

The thing about that is- they have also said very publicly that they believe Kyron was kidnapped and or “secreted” against his will by some means and continues to be held against his will 8 years later. The one thing that has always been a constant in every case I have ever worked on of a missing loved one- not one of them ever subscribed to that possibility as any more than that- a possibility. They held it in the same pool of potentials as homicide or accidental death.

I don’t know what to make of the inequity of the stance (as I have said repeatedly) because I can tell you there is zero evidence to support that and MCSO does not believe that either. For me, that makes it a coping mechanism or flat out denial strategy.

Neither is helpful to locating Kyron Richard Horman, missing from Skyline Elementary since June 4, 2010.

This Golden Gate Killer story is beyond fascinating when you think about the DNA and possible connections to public data of ancestry searches. I am sure you have thoughts about this.

There she is! Hope all is well with you Ode.
Thank you for your thoughts, Im not talking about Frankenfoot these days until we get to the final prognosis and I can tell it in full context from A to Z.

Michelle McNamara was a friend and colleague. She is an example of how outside investigation in a cold case can and mostly (always) progresses them to resolution. There is a way to engage and use qualified media/journalist resources in solving cases and she took the time to personally commend me for my work in this area. I mention this because at the end of the day- if it were not for the readers/posters concern and interest, in some cases inspired actions, there would be no useful platform.
    Thanks to all of you.

On the DNA upload to the public voluntary site. Sometimes, because of my professional affiliations or cases, I can’t say things publicly at all, or in some cases the source or origin of my intel because it is subject to non disclosure or confidentiality for one reason or another. SO I offer this hypothetical- many in the forensic analysis profession have been aware of the “opportunity” a public DNA “opt in” site offered cold cases with an unsub forensic sample. I believe you will start to hear bout additional cases where this investigative tool was used. It is not a stand alone developer of evidence, however, even if there were to be a direct match to an individual. There is a GREAT DEAL of required DNA expert analysis and interpretation that has to accompany this chain of evidence path that must be in place (imo) prior to the use of this track for an active criminal case.

An example of how this was learned by investigators is that initially they acted on an incorrect DNA profile of a man in a nursing home. It is likely familial testing on the crime scene profile sent them back to DeAngelo.

My thoughts are that this was a brilliant and out of the box move by investigators where a CODIS profile was available and linked these crimes to it. If people are willing to upload their actual DNA profile to a voluntary site where it is frequently run against others they have waived their right to privacy altogether, imo. Do I believe criminals in unsolved crimes with CODIS DNA are running around uploading their DNA anywhere? Um, no. But it would not shock me to learn that maybe a relative with a suspicion who does not want anything to come back on them (in terms of accusation) would do just that.
The issue is very largely one of familial testing as it relates to an unsub profile and in states where those laws are on the books this is a very simple issue that will prevail in court, imo.

    In a word, Brilliant.

Ok Blink got it with regards to Frankenfoot, glad you still have your humor intact. I am still sending positive thought as I know everyone here is. You are our fearless leader after all.
To bad we have no DNA evidence from the crime scene..ie Skyline Elementary..where Kyron was plucked from under the nose of EM. I totally get the mindset a parent may have deciding to adopt that their child will be returned alive. It happens, not often, but it happens and I even have a once removed connection to a case where it did happen. I really hope that Kyron does return alive. The question remains if Kyron is alive would it still not be worth calling in the FBI or anyone outside of the current investigative team to look at his case with fresh eyes? A case that has cost the taxpayer more than probably any other missing persons from Portland. Alive or dead I wish someone would push for a new look.
Out there but regarding DNA, there is a commercial for a colon rectal cancer test you mail in from home that runs often. They have the cute little catch phrase that “you just go and ship it off”… It is interesting that they say in that commercial that they check your DNA for Colon Cancer. I thought that was interesting.

Thank you Ode, well received my friend. :)

There is a larger issue in play with regards to immigrant/sanctuary status and MCSO’s want to keep Fed agencies at bay in things they consider “their” jurisdiction. That said, Kyron’s case supercedes that and in an almost 8 year old missing child case it is inexcusable to me how MCSO has not so much as requested a case review from the FBI. I know WHY that is, but Kyron’s recovery should be paramount, imo. Kyron’s biological parents hold the “cards” to progressing this case so far and I do not know if NOBODY has bothered to inform them, but I can tell you from my sources network that in Kyron’s case the FBI does not agree with MCSO “track”. It is my opinion that if they were to request a meeting with the FBI to discuss the possibility of a request to take over the case, the FBI would be upfront with them about that at least “generally”.

It is my firm belief that Desiree and Kaine stay rooted in their belief Terri was involved in some capacity (there are other reasons but I think this is priority) because they know in their heart of hearts she would never physically harm a child, let alone the son she raised as her own for over 7 years. This concept allows them (as stated) to avoid the thought/discussion that Kyron is deceased at the hands of suspect zero.

On the provider of checking “stool” for DNA markers (or proteins) positive for the potential of colon cancer- it is my understanding that test is not suitable for comparison to standard DNA tests for human genomic typing, etc. So in your honor I coin the phrase- “Not true of poo.” LOL

I don’t see you as too easy or optimistic, or simplistic (attributing parents’ behaviors to their bereaved status) about the bios. They are very different people. I am just suggesting something else other than their status of bereaved parents on a journey is more responsible than that status for how they have handled and progressed (not) the investigation. Terri was the effectual mother, therefore just as shocked and bereaved, in fact more so because she was targeted and accused, and I have no doubt she would be busy about progressing this case had she the genetic link to the child with legal rights.

wrt father, one only knows his self-interest has come first from Day l. Det Bender did far more to find the killer of strangers, and release the wrongfully accused again a stranger from prison, than father has done to advance his son’s investigation by a long long shot.

As far as mother goes, I believe the overriding issue is she cannot distinguish truth from nontruth. You have often said she has been informed of X, but has gone out and told the public something she KNEW was not true. I don’t think she does. I thought of her immediately when I read:
“David Priess, an intelligence officer who once gave presidential daily briefings, asked me whether I thought Mr. Trump could distinguish between truth and untruth. … Mr. Priess’s point was that you could sometimes convince a liar that he was wrong. What do you do with someone who does not distinguish between truth and untruth?” https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/04/28/opinion/sunday/the-end-of-intelligence.html Apart from the political backdrop, and not saying this is a correct analysis of the person at issue, it is important to understand some people are literally unable to distinguish truth from untruth. Therefore, mother is acting and has acted rationally within her capability….but it has nothing to do with the abduction. It could be any marriage, or any major life event, or significant dispute, say with a supervisor, in play. Same outcome.

I did my post above before Blink’s response just above it.
About MCSO, requesting of case review, etc. Reese has kept a very low profile since taking office, apart from announcing the sanctuary city enforcement policy after as I recall a blooper at the Courthouse.
He had little choice in Portland. He takes a low profile imo in deference and dependence on his primary and secondary sponsors, Kafoury being the big Kahuna that put him in place, and Underhill the DA who seconded that.

I do not believe therefore, it’s this Sheriff’s call as to whether to seek to change the investigatory status in the Horman case. I believe it is Underhill’s. Like the Hart family cps investigation, and most other matters touching on criminal law in Multnomah, particularly in Shrunk’s reign, It’s The DA Stupid. And, that is true of every County in Oregon imo.

The Hart family was not a failure of the cps investigators in West Linn. Worker did a bang up job, including getting MN details and getting them ordered to be assessed by a doctor. In my opinion, a DA refused to paper a neglect case based on not enough evidence. That is, the neglect was l) school, failure to register to home school–which could be rectified, 2) alleged want of feeding resulting in ematiation and being below the growth chart entirely in some cases. What the DA would have meant is apparently he did not have a doctor that would go before a judge and render the professional opinion they were well below expectable weight, and there was no other medical causation than failure to eat. Most likely the Dr wouldn’t do so as they were of another race, and were adopted. The two women would have put on a robust case there were psychological reasons related to their preadoption background. DA could have put on the two original complainant makers to give the judge cover, and he could have ordered psychologicals of each kid and the two women. And, the kids would have talked to the examiner. So, despite not having a doctor’s testimony, he could have handled a neglect case to the childrens’ benefits. He was just lazy. Too bad.

Similarly, DA Underhill is not motivated to see the Horman investigation rocked. It’s quiet; he’s happy.

Like you Blink, I am sure bio mother believes Terri planned and helped execute the abduction, because she’s said so repeatedly. I don’t know there’s any evidence Kaine still believes that, if he ever did. But, again, I submit the primary reason bio mother does not asked for the FBI to take over the case is that l) she feels it would lessen her illusory sense of control over and collaboration with investigators, 2) she cannot distinguish between truth and untruth with regard to the evidence thus far in the abduction. I do not think her fixation on Terri relates to an unconscious knowledge Terri would not kill him. She is simply psychotic about Terri, and no reason is really needed to fixate on someone like that. It is never rational (in the absence of any evidence whatsoever).

  22. Rose says:

ps I didn’t mean to actually call anyone, much less here, Stupid. I just used a saw to emphasize I think the DA’s office has & is calling the investigatory shots. Your post above that speaks to the lack of a “truth Meter” in some people may be the real reason that Kyron’s bio mother is unable to bring herself to understand and make the proper moves to advance the case by asking for outside agency help.

Most people have the ability to understand truth from fiction, but this could be a valid exception or it could be acquired over time by suppression as do criminals who suppress their “conscience” about right and wrong. Could it be a combination of lack of normal brain function and suppression?

I don’t know if Allen, a child molester fits the role of the Zodiac. My thinking about the Zodiac Killer is he was probably rejected by females who he dated or attempted to date. Or possibly he had a mother who was in some relationship with a man other than his own father (stepdad perhaps, or just mommy’s boyfriends) and his mother paid more attention to them than him. JMO

What do you bet the dna resolution of the Golden State Killer & attendant publicity propelled some WA State employee to change priorities? http://komonews.com/news/local/sheriff-to-unveil-major-development-in-missing-girl-lindsey-baum-case Sheriff is excited about the hope of finding forensic evidence at scene. Year ago would been better. Bet if FBI had charge of investigation, coild’ve been sent to an FBI lab. Someone nudge MaMaYoung. Who really does she want in charge? Baum sounds like a hunter who travels the State (trucker?)

ps imo the Baum Sheriff looks as hapless as Staton.
wonder if Desiree were not married to a small town

Definitely. Except it is my understanding that the FBI resources that worked Kyron’s case did not agree with their suspect track (MCSO) by week 2.

Ultimately yes, but I am very interested in the actual chain of custody- I have never heard of remains of a child sent to Quantico without an attachment to a case file- its not protocol. Something is up with these details. What a fresh mess for this poor baby’s family.

  37. Rose says:

well after reading that, I lament kyron’s parents could not get themselves past their conflict withYeTerri enough to sue PPS in tort for failure in the school’s duty to supervise to hold PPS accountable and to keep other Skyline children safe. Might have forced this audit & child protection atschool issue years ago.

Suspect in 1986 Washington state murder of 13-year-old arrested in Illinois

On Aug. 4, 1986, Jennifer Bastian left her home in Tacoma around 2:30 p.m. on her bicycle, leaving a note that said she’d return by 6:30 p.m., Tacoma police said in a statement.

She had planned to ride her bike to Point Defiance Park to train for an upcoming bike tour in the San Juan islands but never returned.

    (snipped from ^^):

25 News spoke to neighbors in Woodridge Apartments who said they were shocked by the news.

Jennifer Hailey said her daughter, who is just shy of her twelfth birthday, would go over to Wasburn’s apartment all the time. When her daughter got off the school bus Thursday, Hailey hugged her extra tight.

Another neighbor, Gary Winthorpe, said he was really nice and friendly.

“I didn’t have a dad so he taught me stuff I didn’t know,” said Winthorpe.

Some neighbors, like Danielle Cecil, said he had some odd behaviors.

As someone who has written extensively about similar cases (published publicly and peer only) and studied this offense scenario to the nth- I cant help but take it as a personal failure when I see a parent allowing a teenage girl to hang out with this dude and then act surprised to learn he is actually a homicidal pedophile at a minimum. WTF is wrong with people?

  39. Rose says:

one wonders if he was in the military in Tacoma area in ‘86.

From a data perspective ( and in many cases lack thereof) it does seem to highlight some of the differences in pedo offenders who abduct and kill children. If you recall, while not protocol per se, I would very much like to see a reverse engineer process in Kyron’s case reviewed against witness accounts, etc.

Thank you for yr reply. About TY not intervening more with DY, & when he took the lead early on was counterproductive. This abduction certainly allowed him to be “The Man” to his new wife who said she couldn’t even open her car door to get out he had to do it, and to offer her his bone fide detective expertise and guidance. The problem with that is he had zero experience in a child abduction such as this. Imo based on viewing him on camera & in interviews is that he is a concrete thinker from a provincial PD who has always overestimated himself.

I think DY had some problems with relationships and telling the truth long before Kyron disappeared. It may have led to her first divorce of Quinn’s father, Kaine wanting to leave her, and maybe a breakup with boyfriend she moved to Seattle with before the trip to Canada.

Im glad they caught him. Had they consulted the FBI I can tell you that given the facts I just read about Washburn interjecting himself repeatedly and placing himself at the scene- he would have been their top suspect. Wth is it 2017 before hes on a short list when they had a rape kit result? Lastly, I promise you, you get a subject interjecting themselves and willing to be interviewed who is at the scene- ask them for a DNA sample- I can’t think of a similar case where it was not given voluntarily and this case was over by 15 years ago.

Yes, B Reverse engineer the process to prove each step of the investigation. It may reveal some errors in evidence and thinking.

That portion already has, in spades I’m afraid. One very minor example I uncovered years ago was that ridiculous claim about a sauvie cell ping on June 4th- it never existed. Unfortunately I have quite a long list of similar errors.
What I am referring to, is profiling this offender based on some necessary assumptions, and then applying the known statistical correlations that exist in the case/empirical/study/peer data to all males known to have contact with Kyron leading up to his disappearance, and if available ensuing post offense possible behavior.

All I can say is that I have presented this case in the abstract during some of my training and instruction in the field- the approach is never protocol when applying it to only one case (crime), provided the proper caveats are established upfront- it certainly could not hurt.

  47. A Texas Grandfather says:

Sometimes teens conceal their activities from parents. Parenting is not easy especially during the teen years. Teens have adult bodies and lack adult experience and knowledge which leaves them open to those who want to exploit them.

If parents do not do their role of parenting effectively, the children raise themselves and often make huge mistakes. I also think single parent homes are sometimes responsible.

I can remember an experience of stopping our oldest daughter from dangerous behavior because she would feel sorry for some of the less fortunate boys from poor families and wanted to make them feel good. These boys lacked manners and common sense because they were never taught them. Boys are better equipped to survive than girls in those types of situations. That is where dad has to step in and closely monitor the situation. If there isn’t a dad, then the teen girl is often without proper supervision.
