An Open Letter to Penn State University President Rodney Erickson
With much respect -Do what I say, and do it today.
Hire the best Public Relations firm in the country for PSU’s needs. I am redacting that recommendation for the publication of this open letter, but it is included in my email to you. Don’t spend the time or manpower to run through the approved vendor lists and bid it out- not that kind of gig. The Board of Trustees can WebEx if necessary and this is the kind of emergency proxy was invented for.
Once retained, have the agency facilitate meetings through their agents with Bill Parcells and Bill Cowher immediately. Specify no leaks to the press until after they occur and by mutual agreement. Cowher may be the low hanging fruit on this one, he is returning to CBS next year.
If neither is interested in a head coach commitment of an 8-1 Big Ten team, follow their recommendations about who to contact next and ask them; beg if necessary, if they would be willing to consider a consulting gig for the recruitment process. Urban Myer is a fine coach and leader, but regardless of who PSU ultimately chooses, efforts to rebuild the PSU brand must start with a nationally recognizable face of a trusted and respected winner, like yesterday.
Champions attract champions and without that, it is like asking collegiate coaching candidates to walk into the lion’s den (pun intended) wearing a raw steak necklace. You will not even get one to tour Lasche, trust me on this.
This strategy would likely also include a public facing spokesperson effort, and worth every penny if that is all you can get a commitment for from either coach.
Pay them to sit in the lobby. Pay them to ride the elevator a few times, but get them on grounds. Pay them to have a motivational meeting with the team.
If you have some strong players they could attach to quickly and produce an “I remember when I was a young fig on the tree” memory synapses, it couldn’t hurt.
Instruct all team members never to roll the eyes should the phrase “When I was your age we played ball with pads made of glass and never wore cleats in the snow”; if they told me that I would believe it.
This is the kind of benchmarking that will revitalize wilting spirits of a young athlete, and the parents with the trembling hand over the eject button.
Half the free world is digging old milk cartons out of the recyclables to see if they recognize any kids they may have seen with Sandusky or on the sidelines of a game- they need a new visual association.
As you already know, if you are lucky enough to get this far, they will advise you to release every staffer from the interim athletic director to the water boys that were ever part of Paterno’s camp or rolled up his pants before the game. Do it.
This might be a good time to allow a try before they buy scenario if either are willing, as “guest coaches” to finish the season.
While I am at it, I might suggest a reality miniseries of the process- I know some folks from HBO familiar with the Hard Knocks of football, I would be glad to make a connection.
Donate those proceeds to Coach Parcells or Coach Cowher’s disadvantaged children’s charity of choice which is vetted in advance by a specially appointed member chosen by the new Ethics officer.
Point is, you need immediate public support and that will require immediate damage control or your Titanic does not even have the measly lifeboat option.
The public perception is that there is more to this horror movie after the commercial, and the commercials are disappearing as well.
Your job is to employ the resources that can change the channel when the public is not looking, and forget what they were watching in favor of the new programming, which includes sponsors aligned with that audience.
It is about as transparent of a plan as I can offer- with hope and promise to the innocent victims of this tragedy.
I knew JS would be involved with Special Olympics. Don’t need to go any farther. Getting testimony from any of those victims will be difficult. Here ya go:
“Fervent finale for Special Olympics summer spectacle” [titls]
“Sandusky and his wife, Dottie, were the honorary chairpersons for the 2000 Summer Games….
“I want to say that all of you have touched our lives, and we say thank you,” Sandusky told the athletes.”
“Look at the Penn State fiasco. Look at the blind support Tom Osborne and Graham Spanier gave a pedophile like Ronald Roskens even after they were shown surveillance photos of nude young boys in Rosken’s home.”
And:
“King had been close to Ronald Roskens, former chancellor of the University of Nebraska.
Roskens was sacked in 1989 when his involvement in orgies was reported.
In 1990, President George Bush called Roskens to Washington to head the Agency of International Development (AID), a cover in CIA operations overseas.”
Seniors opting to retire with a touch of class
Live golden years near campuses

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Lloyd Huck, a retired chairman of the board of Merck & Co., could afford to retire anywhere in the world, but two years ago he chose to live near his beloved alma mater: Pennsylvania State University.
Huck, 83, is now living out his golden years as vigorously as he did on campus 60 years ago: He’s taking an astronomy class, attends football games, enjoys theater and opera, and chats with students as he strolls the elm-shaded campus.
The Village at Penn State is a joint venture between the school and a private developer. Penn State president Graham Spanier came up with the idea, and the university agreed to lease the land, as well as its name.
Entrance fees at The Village at Penn State began at $171,000 to $372,000 for cottages overlooking Beaver Stadium, such as the one the Hucks live in. Monthly fees can be as high as $3,500, which includes meals, housecleaning, and long-term medical care, said Jill Lillie, the marketing director.
Figuring he has pretty well cheated retirement, Joe Paterno has decided to invest in it.
The Penn State coach is part of a development team that has built a retirement community in State College. The development specifically targets Penn State alums.
JoePa Acres? No, The Village at Penn State. Paterno’s involvement gives new meaning to the recruiting process.
Come live at the place that Joe never will.
Our walkers move better than the Nittany Lions offense
Our seniors have a loads of experience.
Being a silent partner is as close as the 78-year-old icon coach is to hanging it up. Armed with a contract extension, a smothering defense and a monster recruiting class, Paterno is way more rejuvenated than retired entering his 40th year as head coach.
A pleasant place is Carnegie’s in the Toftree’s area. Rumour has it that Paterno owns it. It is an elegent attempt at an American inn and is named after Andrew Carnegie, who once owned the land it is on. Prices are appropriate for one of the best restaurants in State College.
This is almost as important as the crimes. Hope PA residents call and write their reps. We need this nationally BTW, not just PA. MOO.
Pa. law backs up Penn State’s fight for secrecy
By MARK SCOLFORO
Associated Press

Penn State won’t release information that could shed light on the child sex abuse case involving a former assistant football coach because the state open records law gives the school special status. That may soon change, as lawmakers question those protections while the university denies requests for records showing what key figures knew about the allegations before Jerry Sandusky was charged last month with molesting children.
The school has long had a reputation for guarding its secrets closely and zealously, and when the state attorney general announced the charges against Sandusky, she said their investigation – by a grand jury with subpoena power – had been hampered by an uncooperative atmosphere among unnamed school officials.
Penn State’s exemption from most provisions of the law means much of what it releases is information it wants to get out, said Anne Danahy, who covers the school for the Centre Daily Times in State College. It also gets released on Penn State’s timetable, not the specific schedule laid out in the Right-to-Know Law.
“What they think should be public information and what a reporter thinks oftentimes are not the same thing,” she said.
President Rodney Erickson, named to the top job after Spanier left in the wake of the arrests, said the school already posts considerable budget detail online. He said it should be presented in more understandable form.
“Right to know doesn’t mean right to know everything,” Erickson said, “because there still will be things that people won’t get to know,” including health and student records.
Hopefully this grabs the attention of POS Sandusky and attorney Amendola.
Nothing like a little jail time with Big Bertha to make the perv realize he’s in deep shit and this isn’t going away!
(snip)
“Sandusky spent Wednesday night behind bars after new child sex abuse charges were filed against him based on the claims of two new accusers, including one who says he screamed in vain for help while Sandusky attacked him in a basement bedroom.
Sex-crime cases that have more alleged victims — and prosecutors added two to Sandusky’s case with the latest charges — tend to be stronger, said Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman.
“Victims do often gather courage from the fact that others have come forward and it is not unusual for new victims to surface when multiple sex offense violations have been filed and become public,” Stedman said.”(more at link)
I’ll be able to make a better guess as to Dottie’s role in this after we see if she packs a bag and makes a run for it while Jer is locked up today.
Unless a wife is herself terrified of her husband, who makes food for her husband to take to the basement for the continual stream of boys he play with in their basement? And was she unable to hear the newly identified victim’s cries because of all the noise going on upstairs with her and all the kids in her charge? Jer said she was in charge at their house. True or not? Jeez.
Any locals heard rumors of domestic violence calls at their home before?

I agree completely that any entity that accepts money from the taxpayers of a state should have to open their records when something is discovered to be out of the bounds of good behavior.
Already, the lobbyist’s are trying to keep the legislature from taking the steps needed to put a stop to this “secret” society idea.
Every state needs to do an investigation into the application of the open records requirement for all school systems. This is a prime reason that corruption is able to exist in public environments.
When a govenment supported or even partially government supported school plays “hide the truth” behind a group of bad actors, the whole weight of the criminal justice system and the weight of the voters needs to be immediately applied to clean out the rot.
The piece of garbage was released on bail (WTF!!!)
snipped from below link:
erry Sandusky was released from jail on Thursday after posting $250,000 bail.
Sandusky was arrested Wednesday after two more young men testified to a grand jury that they were targeted as children for sexual abuse by the former Penn State assistant coach.
He secured his release using $200,000 in real estate holdings and a $50,000 certified check provided by his wife, Dorothy, according to multiple reports.
Suspect is still at large. Our Montgomery County Public Schools are on lockdown. My youngest son is a junior at our local high school.
I have received 2 messsages from our Superindent and they are working with local police in order to decide when it will be safe to dismiss the students. The gunman is still at large. A sad, sad day in the New River Valley.
@lizzy: thanks. I got enough from what you posted to see that Scott’s brother is the registered sex offender, age 57. So, is he also the benefactor of the library endowment?
______________
@rose: TY; I take most conspiracy stuff with a grain of salt. And I don’t know how much of the entire Franklin scandal is true. I never followed it. However, IF it’s true that Roskens was found to have photos of naked boys and Spanier “blindly supported” him, then that foreshadows what might have happened with Jer at Penn State. Roskens was very close with King back then. I know that Blink is at least looking at the possibility of some sort of tie-in back to Franklin stuff.
From reading that whole article and another about a Special Olympics baseball tourney in the early 1990s, I gather that Terry Yocum has a serious enough mental limitation to make it surprising that he has been able to live in his own place for some time. And he does have his own busboy income, or at least he used to.
So, I’m thinking his political contributions aren’t well considered, and that he may be an easy hit for phone marketers. And Penn State gives plenty of opportunities for employees to make designated or open contributions back to the university. I don’t know if the endowment contribution is from him or not, but it’s possible. Exploitative is so, so I’m hoping someone else did it in his name. Maybe a parent in their will? Or maybe it’s in memory of another Terry Yocum? Yocum’s pretty common around here.
How many boys does Sandunsky have to be accused of raping before he is deemed a danger to society of immeasurable proportions that shouldn’t be let out on bail of any amount?
The resemblance is certainly there. Now, who is their father or maybe uncle? Yocum name is big in PA, starting with Y-B Cigars I have found. And are they the benefactor of the endowment on Beejays “list of things to find.” One of the Yocums I have found has some “ins” in DC.
If more charges come in and he’s sent to jail, will bail increase? $250,000 seems like a steal of a deal for someone up chit creek, as they say.
There are 2 additional cases I am aware of under investigation by the PA dept of welfare currently, but the status outside of that is unknown.
Yes, if new charges are brought by a grand jury, and it would seem in this case, there may be an allegation by a minor family member, depending on what they are, he will be re-indicted, re-arrested on those, and subject to the outcome of a revised bail hearing.
Kudos to appropriate bail for the 2 latest charges, in contrast to the ridiculous unsecured recognizance joke offered for the first 8 victims, and 40 counts by the now removed less than honorable Leslie Dutchcot.
Did you hear that sound? It was the sound of the vacuous hindside of a former judge being plucked from the leather highback chair she used to sit on. Shameful.

The Penn State project is not run by the university but has strong ties. The development was the idea of university President Graham Spanier, and was built on 80 acres leased by the university to a private development team that includes football coach Joe Paterno and Carol Herrmann, a former university administrator.

At the service held in the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center, Penn State alumnus and benefactor William A. Schreyer, who died on Jan. 22, 2011, was honored by some of the people who knew him best — including Kirsch, S&A Homes Vice President Carol Herrmann and Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.
Schreyer was the former president of the Board of Trustees, the CEO of Merrill Lynch from 1984 to 1993, and in 1997, became the benefactor and namesake of the Schreyer Honors College.
Carol Herrmann, President of Pinnacle Development responsible for the development at the Village at Penn State. She also worked for Poole at S&A Homes and Toftrees where Paterno is rumored to have a restaurant.
Under the who knew what when category. I think it despicable that greed was a motivator for people to look the other way on Sandsuky’s crimes. I guess the real question is if greed is a more prefered, less despicable “cover story” for those that may have participated in the core crimes. There are those who knew, and those who also did.
Deadly silence from Dottie until SHE got some blame. Now she issues a defense of HERSELF, thru Amendola. Snipping her response to what, IMO, triggered her statement:
“…No child who ever visited our home was ever forced to stay in our basement and fed there. All the kids who visited us ate with us and our kids and other guests when they were at our home….”
So, Blink, who is the Sandusky’s PR person? Or do they let Amendola write this stuff himself?
So sorry Jer made bail. I’m afraid he’ll get Gricar’d or Schaad-upon before he has a chance to do the plea deal where he turns over the goods he’s got on the others, or the really big fish.
Personally Ithink Dottie should never have signed over their house.
She needs independent counsel. Shows her belief in him.
I think the fruitful line of inquiry starts with those TSM megasalary Directors.

So many terrible memories of another tragedy.

Since we know he wasn’t capable of running such an elaborate ‘trap’ on his own, surely we can expect more arrests? As for the judge who posted the original low ball bail, I hope she faces an ethics review of some kind (conflict of interest and bias).
Dear Ragdoll and Sammy,
Thank you. It is so ironic that the top Tech officials were at the hearing about the Cleary Act (April 16, 2007) and then tragedy again.
On another note- Only $250,000.00 for bail on that monster. Excuse me, but what is so wrong about this? No offense to the people of Pennsylvania but really? Sorry, I just do not understand. Sandusky should be behind bars.

The Associated Press is reporting that JS has posted bail and will be released. I just am curious as to who funded this money.
Yep, he is out. $200K against Real Estate and $50K certified check payable by his wife Dorothy.
I can tell you as a fact that he did not have that much cash on hand.

“exploitative IF so”
If more charges come in and he’s sent to jail, will bail increase?

All the kids who visited us ate with us and our kids and other guests when they were at our home….”
link:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/08/dottie-sandusky-issues-statement-penn-state-scandal-jerry_n_1137595.html?ref=sports
Aw beejay, it needn’t be domestic violence (fear).
some wives would be thrilled if their retiredhusband, food & all, preferred the basement hangout.
Personally Ithink Dottie should never have signed over their house.
She needs independent counsel. Shows her belief in him.
I think the fruitful line of inquiry starts with those TSM megasalary Directors.
Best wishes, Connie

I truly wonder how objective these intermarried coaches, players, administrators, and colleges can be. Please let something good come of this tragedy.

K Genovese as of 12/8 was still at TSM, and she has been there since its inception in ’77!
Anyone who read “Touched” amazon excerpts url (TY beejay) would know it was a highly dysfunctional org from inception without professional consultants–1st org goal–building a physical home, then trying to find kids to live there.
Fwiw, has this stuff been on here?:
http://m.deadspin.com/5865111/joe-paterno-and-chairman-of-jerry-sanduskys-charity-were-pursuing-125-million-real-estate-deal-when-sandusky-was-caught-allegedly-sodomizing-boy

Well, just read it all:
http://m.deadspin.com/the-second-mile/
Q: What year did Raykovitz marry Genovese & join the org as lead & higher paid director?
Q2: Why has the Board allowed her to remain til January, over 1.5 months after her husband’s resignation?
Has she really been top dog (dating to ’77) all along?

Connie ….
What a sad day for Va Tech and the citizens of the community of Blacksburg.
So many terrible memories of another tragedy.
With your youngest son at school during the time of the shooting – I’m sure you were worried sick.
God Bless!
Prayers to the family and friends of the fallen Va Tech Police Officer.

Apparently Genovese joined the newly hatched TSM at the time she was finishing her BA:

Thank you Blink.

No, I wish you could read the articles about Terry Eugene Yocum and his participation in the Special Olympics. He himself is the Special Olympian.
I do not believe Terry Jr. was his son, but I do not have definitive evidence of that.
There is a Terry III alive and well.
