Ending The Nittany Nightmare: Penn State Pre-Game Plea, An Open Letter To President Rodney Erickson

An Open Letter to Penn State University President Rodney Erickson

With much respect -Do what I say, and do it today.

Hire the best Public Relations firm in the country for PSU’s needs.   I am redacting that recommendation for the publication of this open letter, but it is included in my email to you.  Don’t spend the time or manpower to run through the approved vendor lists and bid it out- not that kind of gig.  The Board of Trustees can WebEx if necessary and this is the kind of emergency proxy was invented for.

Once retained, have the agency facilitate meetings through their agents with Bill Parcells and Bill Cowher immediately.  Specify no leaks to the press until after they occur and by mutual agreement.   Cowher may be the low hanging fruit on this one,  he is returning to CBS next year.

If neither is interested in a head coach commitment of an 8-1 Big Ten team, follow their recommendations about who to contact next and ask them; beg if necessary, if they would be willing to consider a consulting gig for the recruitment process.  Urban Myer is a fine coach and leader, but regardless of who PSU ultimately chooses, efforts to rebuild the PSU brand must start with a nationally recognizable face of a trusted and respected winner, like yesterday.

Champions attract champions and without that, it is like asking collegiate coaching candidates to walk into the lion’s den (pun intended) wearing a raw steak necklace.  You will not even get one to tour Lasche, trust me on this.

This strategy would likely also include a public facing spokesperson effort, and worth every penny if that is all you can get a commitment for from either coach.

Pay them to sit in the lobby.  Pay them to ride the elevator a few times, but get them on grounds.  Pay them to have a motivational meeting with the team.

If you have some strong players they could attach to quickly and produce an  “I remember when I was a young fig on the tree” memory synapses, it couldn’t hurt.

Instruct all team members never to roll the eyes should the phrase “When I was your age we played ball with pads made of glass and never wore cleats in the snow”;  if they told me that I would believe it.

This is the kind of benchmarking that will revitalize wilting spirits of a young athlete, and the parents with the trembling hand over the eject button.

Half the free world is digging old milk cartons out of the recyclables to see if they recognize any kids they may have seen with Sandusky or on the sidelines of a game- they need a new visual association.

As you already know, if you are lucky enough to get this far, they will advise you to release every staffer from the interim athletic director to the water boys that were ever part of Paterno’s camp or rolled up his pants before the game. Do it.

This might be a good time to allow a try before they buy scenario if either are willing, as “guest coaches” to finish the season.

While I am at it, I might suggest a reality miniseries of the process- I know some folks from HBO familiar with the Hard Knocks of football, I would be glad to make a connection.

Donate those proceeds to Coach Parcells or Coach Cowher’s disadvantaged children’s charity of choice which is vetted in advance by a specially appointed member chosen by the new Ethics officer.

Point is, you need immediate public support and that will require immediate damage control or your Titanic does not even have the measly lifeboat option.

The public perception is that there is more to this horror movie after the commercial, and the commercials are disappearing as well.

Your job is to employ the resources that can change the channel when the public is not looking, and forget what they were watching in favor of the new programming, which includes sponsors aligned with that audience.

It is about as transparent of a plan as I can offer- with hope and promise to the innocent victims of this tragedy.

Transcript of POS-Sandusky interview with Bob Costas last night on Rock Center.
Costas is one of the best in his field. MOO
Bob’s face during the interview showed the anger and disgust at this lying piece of garbage.

I completely agree, Costas did a masterful job exposing what Sandusky would not admit, imo.

A voice analysis expert would have a lot to say about the pervert rapist in this interview.
Sample below – Sandusky sure dances and hedges around in an answer to the question – “are you sexually atttracted to young boy?”

**”Costas: “Are you sexually attracted to young boys, to underage boys?”

**Sandusky: “Am I sexually attracted to underage boys? Sexually attracted, you know, I enjoy young people. I love to be around them. But no, I’m not sexually attracted to young boys.”**

One last comment and I’ll be quiet. (it’s so hard – I’m seething at each new revelation)

I sure hope Sandusky does not commit suicide as a cowardly way out of the mess he’s made of his life.

The boys need and DESERVE the vindication of this POS RAPIST standing trial and being called to the carpet for his crimes.
    MOO

As it is … he is free without any bond essentially, no monitoring device.
I can see him slinking away and offing himself to avoid the public shame in front of his peers and America.

A person I know (being intentionally vague) ran into Jerry over the weekend in a public place and Sandusky walked up to him and shook his hand, and continued to behave as if nothing happened.

Yes, the conversation included “I guess you probably heard I won’t make this one, cheer them on for me.”

That interview cleared any doubt in my mind that the Nile is the longest river in the world. It stretches all the way to Pennsylvania and runs particularly deep in both Sandusky and his lawyer.

I was stunned when Amendola grinned through the entire response to are you sexually attracted to young boys.

These guys are bringing a parasol to a tsunami; real or perceived, they have a sleeve with something or someone in it.

    Yes Blink.
This makes me nervous – the statements coming from Sandusky and his attorney Joe Amendola just do not seem appropriate at all.
No sense of worry and no urgent denials of the accusations.
Only laid back and half-hearted ‘just wait to hear my side of the story” brush off comments made in his defense.

The mountain of evidence seems HUGE against this rapist and pedophile.
It is worrisome though – that there is no urgency coming from the rapist or from his lawyer.
Do they have the connections to make this go away in the legal/judicial circles?
The man’s career, legacy and name are forever dog crap – but does he feel this confidence b/c he has powerful names in his pocket to somehow continue the cover-up and escape living out his life behind bars?
    Is that even possible?
    Please tell me no.

    As a side …
birds of feather and all that.

Sandusky’s choice of lawyers is noteworthy.
Joe Amendola impregnated a minor 10 years ago.
While acting as Mary Iavasile’s attorney in her emancipation petition (she was a just-turned 17 y/o) – he was having an affair with this minor child and she was pregnant with his baby.
(he later went on to marry and have another child with her – b4 splitting up years later).
Again, the lines of appropriate behavior/conflict of interest are ignored by these men who think they are above the law.

    (snip from link below)
“Joe Amendola, 63, was the attorney on Mary Iavasile’s emancipation petition filed Sept. 3, 1996, just weeks before her 17th birthday, according to Centre County Courthouse documents obtained by The Daily.
That’s approximately when Iavasile became pregnant with Amendola’s child, her mother, Janet Iavasile, told the iPad newspaper.”

“She met him through the school district,” the mother said. “She was interested in the law.”

Why is this scum-bag lawyer even attempting to speak with these men who were raped by his client??
Amendola says it’s possible his client may have molested children and if so -should be punished.

I don’t trust this attorney AT ALL.

    (snip from link below)
“Joe Amendola told Ann Curry on “Today” … prosecutors have never given him the names of the accusers, but he believes he’s found the alleged victim, and if indeed it is him Mike McQueary is lying.

Amendola also concedes, “It is possible Jerry did this [molested kids]” and if he did he should be punished.”

    B

  7. GeorgiaDad says:

I am not going to defend McQuery, but several things come to mind.

    1) We don’t know the entirety of what he told the grand jury, only a brief summation of the GJ’s findings regarding Sandusky based on that testimony, possibly he did intervene in some way. The sole purpose of the Grand Jury indictment was to lay out the charges against Sandusky, not give us the “big picture”.

    2) McQuery has not been fired. Maybe he is protected by “whistleblower status” or knows other incriminating facts on PSU; but possibly PSU knows of extenuating circumstances.

    3) He has obviously been told not to talk to the public.

    4) Sandusky was a linebackers coach, McQuery was a QB. My guess is that Sandusky could take care of McQuery very easily in a fight.

I think he should voluntarily resign or be placed on administrative leave as it is the right thing to do. On the other hand, we should not judge him completely until he has a chance to present his side of the story. It is hard to conceive of whay he could say to exonerate himself, but he should be given that chance.

@Stunned I am with you on this one, 100%.

My 2cent close down the foundation they may close 501 3 c status, quickly, anyway and their assets will be required to be distributed to another worthy nonprofit, by statute. Rebuilding Penn football culture a concern, really? Fuss about the Penn students resumes, really….??? In a victim’s advocacy blog, really?

What about the victims, the kids, the DA and who knows who else is in this Pandora’s box of ugly violations and crimes and ruined futures of victims?

In a forum like this I only expect to hear about the victims and how far the perps reached and a who done it. If it goes beyond that some RESPECT for diversity of opinion and thought is in order. It is blink’s blog she can bash who she wants, but when you wander off the victims advocacy- or- a who done it topic, I think some diversity of opinion needs to be tolerated, NICELY.

Can you just not quietly listen to a difference of opinion without a blooded insult?

I have, several of them, your apparently not reading all comments. And to be clear, that is not an insult, that is an observation.

It is one thing to disagree, but if you think your going to even get into the zipcode of questioning my advocacy, than clearly you are the one with the agenda because mine is quite chronicled here, every day.

And what is not, if you pay close attention to the posters who have already picked up what I have been putting down for a few months, it would be obvious I have been one this from several angles for a while, and I do not write about every case I work on, if it is not appropriate at the time.

It’s safe to assess Sandusky as a clinically narcassistic monster. Answering a question with a question (verbatim) is a creepy response. He literally laid out his psyche on the table. A simple yes or no, right?

Considering this man’s age, there’s likely more victims than we can possibly fathom :(

  10. Ragdoll says:

Reading the posts and B’s responses, I’d wager Sandusky is enjoying the publicity. We know this type all too well.

I said this before in a previous comment….

I can’t stress enough how important these programs are for children and young adults. In a nutshell, they are life building experiences in sports programs. Boys and girls have a dreams. Some make it, some don’t but the journey prepares them for their grand entrance into the world.

On a personal level, my intentions are to keep my son involved in positive experiences (it’s better than the alternative, wondering where he is, what he’s doing and who he’s doing it with).

These young men and the ones that will come up after them need this program and they need it to work. Rebuilding means no more victims. I think that’s very much about the victims, imho.

I’m surprised some people don’t see the big picture.

The Amendolas had a second child in 2003. I read they’re separated now. Please let her get a RO requiring only supervised visitation with dad Joe with their children. Because he lacks the judgment to NOT pull some stunt like letting their kids actually stay with Sandusky as part of his publicity circus. That would make my life complete for the moment.

Typically kids who’re trying to get emancipated status are in trouble with juvenile/family court and it helps the parents get free of them and the court troubles their unruly behavior brings. At minimum, he has attorney ethics problems for his romantic involvement with a client.

Two child molesters, mocking the world. Or, somebody who wants Jerry to go down recommended Amendola. What’s his martindale-hubbell rating?

  22. A Texas Grandfather says:

I am not at all suprised that Sandusky and his attorney are making the rounds of media with the specific task of making the rapeing of young boys seem like a romp in the park. Sandusky has after all had his way, by whatever means, over so long a period that they think little has changed.

Apparently the judge was involved in his foundation and bought into his charming ways to the point that she cut the bail amount by $400,000 and did not require a monitor braclet. He must really have some power that has not been discovered.

As to the redhead TA who caught Sandusky in the shower, he should have picked up the nearest substantial object and put Sandusky on the floor and then called the county sheriff’s office.

This is just another example to make a case that all college and university policing should come from the county sheriff and not from an internal police dept. controlled by the administration. The sheriff is responsible to the people of the community and if he fails to do his job, the people have a way to remove him.

Blink has a very good point about leaving the can of worms open to see what other worms may crawl out. I believe in using the process of “Big Daddy Lipscomb” the first real big man in professional football. When asked how he was able to tackle the ball carrier so often, he replied; “Well I see this big batch of players running at me, so I just grab up the whole bunch and sort them out, the one that has the ball I keep”. To put it in terms of this mess, the whole can needs to be isolated until all the ones involved can be sorted out, keeping those that are responsible.

    Brilliant analogy.

Nils Hagen-Frederiksen, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office, noted that the two officials charged with perjury and failure to report the abuse are being defended by the university, while Paterno was fired.

“We have a cooperating witness [Paterno], an individual who testified, provided truthful testimony,” Hagen-Frederiksen told ABCNews.com, “but two others who were found by a grand jury to commit perjury whose legal expenses are being paid for university. One is on administrative leave. Very interesting development.”

“It’s certainly curious and [has] not been explained yet,” he said. “Speaking as a prosecuting agency, we have a cooperating witness who has not been charged, while two individuals accused of committing crimes continue to be affiliated.”…

The outside earnings cannot exceed that reasonable for 32 hours/month during the academic year . . . let’s see, since Spanier is on a 12-month contract, if we divide the US Steel compensation alone by 12*32 (HA–like he spent that much time), he has been worth pretty darn much per hour to US Steel.

I’m enraged to even imagine that defense coming. As a last resort, of course. Many other aces to exhaust first.

In denial. Um, in denial that these sexual assaults were harmful to the children. Whether I’d buy that depends on just how many there were (which we’ll never know all). Denial only covers so much behavior. Then you reach for bigger-sounding psychiatric labels and try to sell those.

And there will be forensic psychiatrists (names already being gathered, I suspect) whose honest professional opinion will support that.

Do with this what you want … but I am getting hammered for handling this the right way … or what I thought at the time was right … I had to make tough impacting quick decisions.

This is off record … again … I have not and will not say anything to anyone else.

$1 real estate transactions are quite common around here; I’ve asked about it a number of times but it is beyond my expertise. One reason is that people don’t want sale prices published in the paper. So they do the actual sale (or part of it) as $1. Then there is a side agreement for some relatively trivial consideration (unpublished) for the rest of the money. It is also done fairly frequently for property transfers between relatives or estates. Actually, I think I’ve been a party of one of those, but I can’t remember the reason then. Maybe the way one of our refinances was handled? Or when we purchased our home from an estate trust? Graying brain cells, sorry.

Penn State May Seek Immunity After Skirting Public Laws

Nov. 16 (Bloomberg) — Pennsylvania State University, after years of skirting public-school rules, may claim protection from liability under commonwealth laws that shield government entities, if it faces suits related to a child-sex scandal.

Moody’s Investors Service is examining the school’s relationship with the state to see whether claims of sovereign immunity apply, analysts said yesterday.

The commonwealth’s flagship state-supported school has successfully claimed to be exempt from freedom-of-information laws that apply to most public institutions, including competitors such as Ohio State University and the University of Texas. Penn State’s unusual position has for years shielded the school and its football program from public scrutiny.

“Because this is an unprecedented development in many areas of liability risk, it may not be clear even to them what the situation is,” John Nelson, a Moody’s analyst in New York, said in a telephone interview. “These are things that have to be decided by counsel and possibly the courts. It could just take a while to evolve.”

Email outlines reaction to alleged Sandusky attack [good article w/info - worth read 3-pgs]
On Wednesday, Penn State named Dr. David M. Joyner, an orthopedic surgeon who got his bachelor’s degree and medical degree from the university, as acting athletic director.

“Mr. Sandusky goes on worldwide television and admits he did everything the prosecution claims he did, except for the ultimate act of rape or sodomy? If I were a prosecutor, I’d be stunned,” said Lynne Abraham, the former district attorney of Philadelphia. “I was stunned, and then I was revolted.”

The State Employees’ Retirement System released records Tuesday showing Paterno’s long service at the university theoretically puts him in line for a pension of more than $500,000 a year, according to an Associated Press analysis.

The New York Times reported Tuesday night that Paterno transferred full ownership of his house to his wife, Sue, for $1 in July. The couple had previously held joint ownership of the house. Paterno’s attorney Wick Sollers told the paper in an e-mail that the transfer had nothing to do with the scandal but was part of an ongoing “multiyear estate planning program.”

Lawyer Says Alleged Sandusky Victim Will Testify to Severe Sexual Assault

Ben Andreozzi, a Pennsylvania lawyer representing one of eight alleged victims in the Penn State sexual child abuse case, called Jerry Sandusky a “coward” on Wednesday and said that Sandusky’s recent comments on television had emboldened his client to pursue sexual assault charges against Sandusky.Andreozzi, who also issued a statement Wednesday, said his client would testify that he was “severely sexually assaulted” by Sandusky.

Andreozzi, whose practice has specialized in child sexual abuse cases, also said he was upset that Penn State had not reached out to any of the victims.“They could have a victim-centric approach to this but it appears they have been in a face-saving mode,” Andreozzi said. “They could be proactive and offer to pay for counseling and let the victims participate in the rebuilding of the school. They could help to adopt policies and procedures that will prevent sexual assaults on the campus“This is a situation that is only going to grow. When I represent a sexual abuse victim, we start with one or maybe two clients but as the ball gets rolling forward, more victims almost always come forward.”

Former DA: Initial allegation in Penn St abuse case referred to state AG due to ‘indirect’ tie

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — A former Pennsylvania county prosecutor said Tuesday he referred a report of alleged child sexual abuse by former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky in 2009 to state prosecutors because of an “indirect connection” to Sandusky’s family.

Former Centre County District Attorney Michael Madeira told The Associated Press that he cited the apparent conflict of interest in passing the case to the state attorney general’s office headed, at the time by now Gov. Tom Corbett.

The case initially brought to Madeira is referred to in the 23-page grand jury report as “Victim 1.” That report said the witness testified about instances of abuse that began in 2007, and that Sandusky had contact with the witness at a high school Clinton County, just north of Centre.

Madeira said the case was then referred to him by Clinton County prosecutors in early 2009 after a determination that allegations mainly occurred in Centre County. He said he was not aware of any previous allegations, including those reported in 1998 and 2002, and that he had no further contact with the investigation after referring it to the attorney general’s office.

The grand jury report detailed a 1998 investigation by Penn State police, begun after an 11-year-old boy’s mother complained that Sandusky had showered with her son in the football facilities. Then-District Attorney Ray Gricar declined to file charges.

***Gricar was declared legally dead earlier this year.***

Ex-DA: PSU case referred due to wife’s family tie

A former Pennsylvania county prosecutor says he referred an accusation of child sexual abuse allegedly committed by former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky to state prosecutors because his wife’s brother was Sandusky’s adopted son.

Madeira said Wednesday that he hasn’t spoken to his brother-in-law in years, and rarely spoke to Sandusky.

    Jerry Sandusky Named Autobiography ‘Touched’

In view of recent child-sex allegations against former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky, the title of his 2001 autobiography “Touched: The Jerry Sandusky Story” is now an eerie double entendre for those following the scandal

“My father probably spoke the most truthful words about me that had ever been spoke,” Sandusky writes, according to The Patriot-News. “‘Jer,’ he said, ‘you could mess up a free lunch.’ …I thrived on testing the limits of others and I enjoyed taking chances in danger.”

According to the Patriot-News, Sandusky repeatedly writes about hugging boys and being very “close” to the boys in the program.

“They are kids that have touched my life and have been a part of me for a long, long time,” Sandusky writes.

Late Night: Jon Stewart rips Jerry Sandusky’s interview [small clip/video @ link, too]

On Tuesday’s “Daily Show,” he unleashed scorn on the former Penn State coach and accused pedophile. He began by criticizing Sandusky’s decision to conduct the interview over the telephone: “It seems to me when you’re accused of one of the most heinous crimes imaginable, you may not want to literally phone in your defense on national television.”

But the host reserved his harshest words for Sandusky’s lawyer, Joe Amendola, who insisted that, yes, he would allow his own children to be alone in the presence of his client. Stewart suggested that Amendola, who once fathered a child with one of his teenage clients, might not be the best person to answer this kind of question. “What kind of creepy guy club do you both belong to?” he wondered. “If you’re accused of sex with minors, maybe your criteria for finding a defense lawyer shouldn’t be ‘also has issues with sexual boundaries.’”

In the end, Stewart found it ironic that Sandusky, a defensive coordinator, was so lousy at coordinating his own defense. “It’s easy. You could have called the prevent defense, or the prevent-me defense,” he said. “When the ball snaps, pull all your [bleeping] lineman, and send everybody to prevent you from moving 50 yards within a kid.”

The death penalty here in Florida is not working. It only protects the evil ones from the general population.

Most older people, when working out a “multiyear estate planning program” sign over their property to their child/children. NOT to their spouse, who typically are in the same age bracket.

I’m a Penn State graduate, one who worshipped at the church of Joe Paterno, the plainspoken Warren Buffett of the Nittany Valley. Despite making, bringing in and giving away millions over his 46 seasons as head football coach, including financing a new library and chapel on campus, Paterno has always lived as a modest man. His home is a 1950s ranch that’s never seen a granite counter or stainless-steel appliance. Paterno famously taught his players values, along with football. No one danced in the end zone or spiked the ball, and almost everyone graduated.

I find it hard to believe that Paterno, bolstered by his own authority and legend, stood by as one child after another became a victim. It’s as if he’d never heard the cliche that for evil to triumph, good men need only do nothing. Sandusky, who has been charged with 40 counts of sexually abusing children, says he is innocent. Yet reading the grand jury’s report is like watching a movie where you shout at the screen “Call the police!” No one does, and catastrophe ensues

Thanks Boz for posting about Chandlers execution.
I lived in the Tampa-Clearwater area in 1989 and remember this case all too well.
Chilling thinking of their last moments – chained and thrown overboard alive.

There was a billboard up just as you drove onto the Courtney Campbell Causeway to head across the Bay when LE was trying to track this POS.
I drove past that sign every day.

It had a blown-up picture of the piece of paper found in the womens car – with directions that Oba Chandler had stupidly written for where they were to meet him.
Someone came forward saying the handwriting looked familiar, and that bit of info helped to track Chandler.

Rest in Peace Joan Rogers, and her daughters – Michelle and Christe.
