Ending The Nittany Nightmare: Penn State Pre-Game Plea, An Open Letter To President Rodney Erickson

An Open Letter to Penn State University President Rodney Erickson

With much respect -Do what I say, and do it today.

Hire the best Public Relations firm in the country for PSU’s needs.   I am redacting that recommendation for the publication of this open letter, but it is included in my email to you.  Don’t spend the time or manpower to run through the approved vendor lists and bid it out- not that kind of gig.  The Board of Trustees can WebEx if necessary and this is the kind of emergency proxy was invented for.

Once retained, have the agency facilitate meetings through their agents with Bill Parcells and Bill Cowher immediately.  Specify no leaks to the press until after they occur and by mutual agreement.   Cowher may be the low hanging fruit on this one,  he is returning to CBS next year.

If neither is interested in a head coach commitment of an 8-1 Big Ten team, follow their recommendations about who to contact next and ask them; beg if necessary, if they would be willing to consider a consulting gig for the recruitment process.  Urban Myer is a fine coach and leader, but regardless of who PSU ultimately chooses, efforts to rebuild the PSU brand must start with a nationally recognizable face of a trusted and respected winner, like yesterday.

Champions attract champions and without that, it is like asking collegiate coaching candidates to walk into the lion’s den (pun intended) wearing a raw steak necklace.  You will not even get one to tour Lasche, trust me on this.

This strategy would likely also include a public facing spokesperson effort, and worth every penny if that is all you can get a commitment for from either coach.

Pay them to sit in the lobby.  Pay them to ride the elevator a few times, but get them on grounds.  Pay them to have a motivational meeting with the team.

If you have some strong players they could attach to quickly and produce an  “I remember when I was a young fig on the tree” memory synapses, it couldn’t hurt.

Instruct all team members never to roll the eyes should the phrase “When I was your age we played ball with pads made of glass and never wore cleats in the snow”;  if they told me that I would believe it.

This is the kind of benchmarking that will revitalize wilting spirits of a young athlete, and the parents with the trembling hand over the eject button.

Half the free world is digging old milk cartons out of the recyclables to see if they recognize any kids they may have seen with Sandusky or on the sidelines of a game- they need a new visual association.

As you already know, if you are lucky enough to get this far, they will advise you to release every staffer from the interim athletic director to the water boys that were ever part of Paterno’s camp or rolled up his pants before the game. Do it.

This might be a good time to allow a try before they buy scenario if either are willing, as “guest coaches” to finish the season.

While I am at it, I might suggest a reality miniseries of the process- I know some folks from HBO familiar with the Hard Knocks of football, I would be glad to make a connection.

Donate those proceeds to Coach Parcells or Coach Cowher’s disadvantaged children’s charity of choice which is vetted in advance by a specially appointed member chosen by the new Ethics officer.

Point is, you need immediate public support and that will require immediate damage control or your Titanic does not even have the measly lifeboat option.

The public perception is that there is more to this horror movie after the commercial, and the commercials are disappearing as well.

Your job is to employ the resources that can change the channel when the public is not looking, and forget what they were watching in favor of the new programming, which includes sponsors aligned with that audience.

It is about as transparent of a plan as I can offer- with hope and promise to the innocent victims of this tragedy.

Spanier also made time to perform magic tricks for students and run around sporting events in the Nittany Lions mascot uniform.

“Graham, I mean President Spanier, likes to be really active with students,” said Kyle Harris, 21, a senior public relations major who is a percussionist in the Blue Band. “He was always coming and playing with us.”

Schultz was called out of retirement this summer, when his successor left for a job elsewhere. In June, the National Football Foundation named Curley the country’s top athletic director. At the time, the foundation’s president said, “Tim Curley is a great leader with unparalleled vision.” That honor was rescinded last week.

Curley is also charged with perjury and failure to report child abuse to authorities. Curley’s attorney, Caroline Roberto of Pittsburgh, told a group of reporters that he is innocent, and the charges are the equivalent of getting a traffic ticket. She declined to comment to the Post. Curley was put on leave from the university.

This looks like 1 degree of separation. Penn State has replaced people “in house” and Second Mile hasn’t done any better. To put Freeh in charge of an internal investigation, however highly credentialed he might be, makes no sense when the trust of the BOT is under question with it’s ties to Second Mile. This makes no sense. This does not seem like a “let the chips fall where they may” decision IMO.

I agree, however, I do wish to add that it is my understanding that every single committee member polled, and no I am not naming which, was asked to provide input. 100 % of THAT input received, and apparently not taken seriously enough, was that the investigation should be ENTIRELY free of any involvement of ANYONE not absolutely independent of PSU, period.

I wonder if this leads to a faculty mutiny- there are some of the best educators in the country on staff at PSU.

    http://www.senate.psu.edu/senate-resolution_11-18-11.pdf

Note what the Faculty Senate recommended for the special committee composition. Also, note the final phrase of the last sentence does not mention Erickson by name, which was a deliberate omission.

Call me crazy, but how can anyone hired by the university and/or it’s trustees be deemed as “independent” in the investigation of itself? Am I missing something? Shouldn’t the FBI be doing their own investigation of what’s going on in that university? I would say the AG, but in this case, I guess that’s not independent either. Maybe I just don’t know how things *work* anymore.

  13. Boz says:

T Ruth, you don’t know how things work just like the majority of us because we’re not criminals and we’re not child molesters. If this thing is as deep and widespread as my suspicions are telling me, there should and could be BIG heads rolling. I suppose that all depends on how well Sandusky has covered his ass. I wouldn’t doubt he has a closet full of evidence against his co-conspirators/molesters just so he won’t get his ass killed. It would have happend by now if he didn’t. Don’t you think?

I think I have serious concerns that he and Amendola are not appropriately nervous enough for my taste.

I saw Curley or Schultz’s lawyer compare their charges to a parking ticket yesterday.

For this to stay relevant and provide the distillations necessary to understand the “size and scope” true investigative work must be done. I am proud to see a bunch of that is going on here- beejay, erose, lizzy, and several behind the scenes on my team.

Sadly, this has not even broken the surface yet, and there are many that are hoping it never does.

  14. A Texas Grandfather says:

Thanks for the link Lizzy. The last part of the resolution is a co-operation agreement with the presidents five part plan. I suppose that is in the resolution to sooth some feathers.

    So who did hire Freeh?

And for those who may not be in the know, Freeh was the head of the FBI under the Clinton administration and was in office during the Waco fiasco. I personally would not trust this guy as far as I could throw my house. He is a Clinton crook IMO and will do nothing but eat up time and money and the product he produces will be worthless.

The Governor of the state should find an out-of-state special prosecutor to put together a team for an independent investigation of this whole affair. The “fox guarding the henhouse” approach will not get it done.

Freeh has no subpoena power. He will have access to only those records made available to him. His position is essentially that of any hired consultant who is called in, and paid by a company to make recommendations (laughter all around from everyone who ever called in a consultant in this capacity!)

Not a reflection on him personally. He was a good PR choice. Maybe there will be sacrificial lambs. The end zone is far, far away.

BTW, who do you know on Wall Street? Spending time with family in GA this week, I remembered someone who spent years as a stockbroker with a major Wall St firm. We chatted about this case. She told stories about friends there who found out shocking things and, of course, told each other. One was a gay male who ran into his female roommate’s father with his young lover. He was devastated, and told his friends in confidence. The father was high up major corp exec, who had a series of older adolescent males come in from out of country and stay IN HIS HOME, wife present but seemingly unaware.

Interesting conversation. She’ll get back to me after chatting with her Wall St friends during the holidays.

Oh, my point is: I’d never have realized I have a contact with Wall St. connections, except that she mentioned it last time I bought furniture from her. She & hubby now run a furniture store in GA. So, start talking to people. “I’ve been following the Penn State case…”

Somebody knows who else, besides Jerry.

Absolutely. In particular, any profession dealing with children of disadvantage.

It’s gonna take a Philadelphia lawyer, as the old timers say, to inform us of how Paterno and others could protect their assets. Bankruptcy is one area. But also civil money judgments and marital assets. Hard to imagine someone in Paterno’s position wasn’t well-advised long ago on how to hold title to his assets just in the eventuality that somebody got a judgment against him.

I do not believe Paterno has done anything to shield assets to date, or at least I have not seen any evidence of that. When I start seeing living trusts and LLC’s cropping up, I would change my opinion.

I am by no means a forensic accountant, in fact, one might make the argument that my math skills are not on par with some of my others, lol, but I can read 4 pages out of the IRS filings and tell you it is utter BS.
    B

Blink, is Joe Paterno’s lack of shielding assest up until now due to his blantant arrogance and God-like opinion that he and his Penn State status is above the law and criminal charges?

Have we noted John Surma’s brother, Vic, living in Sandusky’s basement?

“Vic Surma, 61, a starting offensive tackle in college, played from 1968 to 1970 for the Nittany Lions under Paterno. One semester, he said, he lived in a spare bedroom in Sandusky’s basement. He has kept in touch with his former coach through annual golf outings to benefit The Second Mile, the charity for troubled boys that Sandusky created. It’s how Sandusky found his victims, prosecutors said.”

Increasing, they’ve been doing design/build or other contracting variations. Not sure where that would fall in their process.

The requirements for the process might vary with the source of funds. If a single private donor gives $84 million for a hockey program, I’d expect they can say who gets to build it. If, on the other hand, state funds are in the mix for a project, it’s probably a low-bid process after qualification.

Drudge is carrying a link to an article written by Ian Simpson Of Reuters regarding an interview with former Vice-President of Student Affairs Vicky Triponey.

In the interview Triponey speaks of her reasons for leaving PSU. It was primarily because of the special treatment of football players when they committed acts that were outside the allowed rules of the student guidelines. She addresses how Joe Paterno and the former President of PSU would make up new rules on the spot to protect the football players from being penalized for their middeeds.

This is not the only school who behaves in this manner regarding protecting athletics from bad deeds. This lady could probably give some very good testimony about the corruption that existed within the PSU administration during her time on the job (2003-2007).

Blink and others. I wish to HELL I had the time, resources and energy to help in your investigative processes. As you can tell, I can only pop in and out.

I’d give anything to research if and/or how many children have gone missing during this war on them.

Can you imagine the threats to some of these young men/children, “You know what happened to that Gricar guy, wink, right?”

Agreed! This case gets more disgusting by the day! Unfortunately I feel it’s only the tip of the iceberg. I continue to keep all of the victims, known and unknown, in my prayers.

I’m trying to figure the governor out, too. At first glance it seems that things are finally coming out under his administration, but then, there was that stall in the investigation, and this is the first time he is not in the DA’s office for a while.

You guys ability to research and dig up all this information is just amazing. I certainly pray it is a step in the right direction towards finding out exactly what was going on and who was involved. What a horrible feeling to think how many vulnerable children were put in harms way and made to feel totally helpless. May each of these young men know we do care and continue to pray for their strength and well being.

I hope he really didn’t do anything to a grandchild. But I also really hope that the in-law is telling the truth, so the credibility of others isn’t harmed. No win. A lose, lose situation, unfortunately.

I think Sandusky is the low-hanging fruit, too. Erose, thanks for the roster; good source. Maybe JS was never in a fraternity.

Wanted to make sure everybody saw this quote, from a lengthy article. I just loved it; wish I could’ve heard it, for all the intonation you miss just reading it:

“Matt Hahn, who played for Penn State from 2004 to 2007, recalls seeing Sandusky around a lot, though the coach had retired in 1999. He usually had young boys with him but nobody suspected a thing. Hahn had a strong reaction to a suggestion by Sandusky’s attorney that hugging in the shower was what “jocks do.”

“Let me make one thing clear,” Hahn says. “There’s no hugging in the shower between any guys, and nobody is rubbing my back and I’m not rubbing anybody’s back, I can tell you that. You hear a 60-year-old man is showering with a 10-year-old boy, that’s enough for me to say, ‘Whoa, that’s not a good thing.’”"

Just want to make sure you guys working in the background have already figured out that it’s easy to confuse University of PA with Penn State University. I got confused early on when references to “Penn” were made and I couldn’t track down that stuff at Penn State U. “Penn”, to those authors, meant Univ of PA.

Now I see why Second Mile reversed its earlier statements about closing down:

“In a separate legal dispute, a lawyer says Sandusky’s charity, The Second Mile, shouldn’t be allowed to dissolve its assets.

Harrisburg lawyer Ben Andreozzi represents someone who claims to be a victim of Sandusky. The Legal Intelligencer newspaper reported Wednesday that Andreozzi filed a lawsuit seeking an injunction against The Second Mile.

A spokesman for the charity says it received the filing and will adhere to its legal responsibilities.”

Follow the money back in the 90′s to Tom Ridge. ANd doncha know, they’re thinking of him as Spanier’s replacement. With Freeh (a deputy LE Keep-A-Lid-On-It) and Ridge (political KALOI), they hope to make this go away. But, Penna victims are all over the national map, and are biding their time to speak out. Or, “act out”, as the defense lawyers like to characterize uncomfortable truths being revealed. Let them go right ahead and put these two KALOI’s in place, and watch a new batch of low hanging fruit come out in 2012.

  43. A Texas Grandfather says:

    erose and Boz

A very good point about the possibility of the governor and Freeh are tied into this mess. One has to ask the question of why did it take the Governor over three years when he was AG to get to this point?

I will postulate that perhaps as AG he could not get the former Governor to co-operate and had to wait until he could win an election to put himself in the Governors office.

That is why I suggested to have the Governor find an out-of-state attorney to run an independent investigation.

I stated early on that there was corruption everywhere related to this schools athletic programs, administration and the associated non-profit organizations. It now appears that some of the companies doing constrution and other tasks under contract may have some problems too.

IMO Joe Paterno stayed about twenty years too long. Someone made a comment that he had become an old man and allowed things to get out of hand. Some people do get to be old at age sixty-five or sometimes less. That doesn’t mean that everyone fits that pattern.

If you compromise your moral values and just “go along to get along”, things like this can happen.

  44. beejay says:

On that $3 million construction grant to Second Mile, we need to look back into the state legislature:

“According to correspondence from Mr. Corbett’s budget secretary, Charles B. Zogby, the $3 million was first budgeted by the Legislature in 2010 and approved for release by former Gov. Ed Rendell a year ago….”

[Gov Corbett took office, reviewed & approved it]

If anyone needed technology to tell you JS might have been deceptive in his “not a pedophile” interview with Costas, well, technology was applied. I’ll snip some results below for your amusement or edification.

T.J.Ward (yes, the Aruba one) and Lynn Robbins, thru their joint venture, Voice Analysis Technologies, have a gadget that revealed some interesting things. Robbins performed the work in the 11 Alive TV studios (local, Atlanta, GA):

“Robbins says voice analysis showed, “Snapping the towel is high risk, there’s more there.”

High risk means false statement. Low risk would be truthful.”

Robbins analyzed, as reported in this 11 Alive story, JS’ other answers to Costa’s questions. I’ll summarize her finding here:

Medium to high risk on the ‘horsing around’ question.

High risk to the Oral sex seen by the janitor question.

    Now another snip:

“Then she analyzed Sandusky’s answer to Costas’ question,”Are you a pedophile?” Sandusky answered, “No.”

Robbins says voice analysis showed “His answer about not being a pedophile ‘no,’ is high risk with an exclamation mark which means say or stop, so he’s holding something back. That’s one of the most deceptive statements he has in the interview.”

Joe Paterno should have initiated an investigation into this whole sordid affair along with his retirement when his assistant reported the incident to him.
He was all about his number of wins and that has been obvious to most observers for years. When coaches become figureheads but stay on to pad their records, the records become invalid IMO. That includes Bobby Bowden who I happen to like a lot as a coach. Like Joe, he seems to be a good person but these guys would not get to where they were without a tough, even ruthless, side.

Thank you Swweetie_Pi for being more specific. I ran across this, OMG another conspiracy theory, ’60′s radical article. Thing is, it has some credible links. Had no idea we are going through a rerun of sorts. Interesting that Corbett and Ridge have been a team before.

I keep waiting for THE story, the actual iceberg, where we find Sandusky pimped and finding THE money, the incriminating money that puts the right guys under the spot light of truth I keep reading about. I’m just trying to straighten out a pot of spaghetti. Thanks for the tip. It helps.

I read an interesting comment about how Second Mile and Penn State (and I will add the State) were in a perpetual Cold War detente. Would love to know what changed that.
