Body of Missing Idaho Child Robert Manwill Found in Canal

Boise, ID– The body of 8 year old missing Boise child Robert Manwill has been positively identified as confirmed by sources on the scene speaking to blinkoncrime on the condition of anonymity.

RobertManwill (1)

Yesterday afternoon, authorities pulled the body of a small boy matching Robert’s description from the New York canal in rural Ada County, Boise.

Robert was reported missing by his Mother Melissa Jenkins, after 9:30PM on July 24th.. However, sources inside the investigation believe that timeline to be considerably off.

In the past 3 days, the Boise Police asissted by the FBI and Team Adam, appeared to be narrowing their focus as they cordoned off portions of a landfill, began excavating the backayard of Evan Wallis, and were seen removing large pieces of carpet and other evidence from the apartment of Robert’s Mother and her boyfriend, Daniel Ehrlick, Jr.

Mr. Wallis alleges his truck, a Chevy Suburban, which may be tied to Robert’s disappearance, was stolen from his home on July 22nd and recovered by him upon his return Monday July 27th from a weekend away.

Ms. Jenkins is currently on probation for fracturing the skull of her infant daughter.

I’m so overcome with emotion by the disappearance & death of this little boy. The LEO who dove into the water to get his body – just can’t imagine what it took for him to do that (& survive the current himself!) but it was terrific. Kudos to him! And to all the people looking out for this little boy, in death.

I read the update to the case on the Nancy Grace website, in which a 7 yr old playmate in the neighborhood was with him on the swings in a playground then said Robert left at 7:30pm to go home. Educated guess is the mother & b.f. took roughly 2 hrs to commit the crime & cover it up, then call LE at 9:30pm. Robert’s body was discovered in the river, close to the Wallis home.

How Wallis could deny involvement is beyond me — to say his vehicle was “stolen” before the weekend, then he conveniently goes away for the weekend (alibi time?) then have it magically “reappear” on Monday (ready to him to go to work?? is that what he wanted ppl to believe?), as if he had no personal connection to Ehrlick? Oh PUH-LEEZ! stretches the limits of credibility.

A person who gets their vehicle stolen on Friday calls it in on Friday !! duh. Makes one wonder what kind of evidence left behind made him to call this “car theft” in on Monday, or what he learned by Monday that led him to call LE. (for example, if Robert’s body hadn’t been found, would he have called the theft in?)

It’s really an injustice to children that one judge in Boise decided not to protect them, enabling a tragedy that should never have occurred. You can bet that this case is not an isolated incident in her court – I’m certain she’s established a pattern. There’s a similar judge in Vermont who allowed a long-time repeat S.O. who’d committed a heinous crime to go free w/minimal sentence despite public outcry, & this is what this Boise judge reminds me of.

And remember that it’s the responsibility of the non-abusive parent to have the guts to change things – to take the kids out of that living situation & walk away. Back in the day, there weren’t many resources available to help, & even today, budget cutbacks have ended many good programs (particularly LE-related ones which were truly effective) — yet, with CAREFUL planning, one CAN walk away w/o getting blown away by the abuser. Where there’s a WILL, there’s a way. (been there, done that, & survived to tell the story.)

Did he call LE or did they call/greet him?

Fairwitness, the father of Melissa’s bf came by to give his grown son money for bills, not little Roberts dad. This is also when the Bf accused his own father (the bill payin one) of taking Robert. Nice family huh?

  3. FairWitness says:

Thank you for the clarification, Melissab. I still don’t understand why Robert was with his mother. His father Charles was supposed to have custody of him. How could he be so irresponsible? He knew the home was dangerous for Robert. He has also had another son murdered by his first wife. One would expect someone with that kind of experience and knowledge would be over-protective for the son he still has. I guess Charles must not have given a hoot for this child. How sad for Robert. I don’t even want to think about the miserable life he must’ve endured.

I heard on NG last night that one of mother Melissa Jenkins’ neighbors reported that Melissa was at work at the time of Robert’s “disappearance.” The violent, druggie BF, David Ehtlick Jr. was supposedly home babysitting the kids.

How does an 8 year old boy go from the playing at the playground at 7:30 PM to murdered by 9:30 PM?

  4. melissab says:

Fair…if you haven’t already read it yet, the court ORDERED Mr. Manwill to continue Robert’s visitations with his bio mom. It is so terribly, painfully true. This judge or judges in this case must be reviewed. I think when Mr. Manwill can come to his senses he just might think about a few things and see to it someone get their feet held to the fire. I don’t see where he did anything wrong only abiding by the law and look what happened.

I was looking through the site today and clicked on this one because I didn’t remember the name and then I saw Robert’s face and read the story and it all came back to me. I am in tears again. This poor baby, I don’t even want to imagine what his life was like before it was ended by these scumbags (including the bio-father and bf’s father). They all played a part in this childs tortured life and death. I know in prison that molesters need to be separated because other inmates will kill them. I hope child killers are treated the same. Robert has the sweetest face and may god be with him always.

A few days after 8-year-old Robert Manwill disappeared, police found this note in the apartment the boy’s mother shared with her boyfriend:

Ehrlick’s niece: ‘I want justice for Robert, bad’
The defendant’s brother and niece say they saw a baseball-size bruise on Robert Manwill’s back. Snip..

In the summer of Robert Manwill’s 8th year, he often was separated from the other kids at family gatherings.

He would get in trouble for doing things like asking for a drink of water or to go to the bathroom — and was constantly grounded, made to sit on his hands, to put his nose against a tree or to stay in a room alone for hours.

He was denied so much food by his mother, Melissa Jenkins, and her boyfriend, Daniel Ehrlick, 38, that Robert’s rapid weight loss alarmed Ehrlick’s family members.

That was the miserable existence described by Ehrlick’s niece and his brother on the seventh day of his first-degree murder trial Wednesday. Prosecutors say Ehrlick beat Robert in weeks of escalating violence that ended with his death in July 2009, and that he dumped the boy’s body in the nearby New York Canal. Jenkins has already pleaded guilty to being an accessory to second-degree murder and could be called to testify.

Caseworker: Jenkins wasn’t supposed to live with Ehrlick

    Published: 05/26/11

Idaho Department of Health and Welfare workers who were monitoring Daniel Ehrlick and his girlfriend, Melissa Jenkins, testified on Day 8 of Ehrlick’s first-degree murder trial.

Caseworker Laura Bessey testified that Jenkins should not have been living with Ehrlick in the summer of 2009 as part of the conditions that allowed Ehrlick to get custody of Aidan. Jenkins lost custody of Aidan, her toddler son, after cracking his skull the year before.

Bessey said she was never told by Jenkins or Ehrlick that Robert Manwill was living in Ehrlick’s apartment, which also was not supposed to happen.

But Bessey admitted that she never checked to make sure Jenkins was not living at the apartment. Bessey said she never saw Manwill at Ehrlick’s apartment, but a social worker hired by Health and Welfare to make home visits at the apartment may have told her the boy was there.

Testimony — which may include more testimony from social workers about the weeks before Manwill was killed — resumes Friday morning.

All three women told jurors that Ehrlick was prone to sudden fits of anger and was controlling and emotionally abusive, calling them names like “Stitch” and deciding when they could leave the house. All three also said he choked them — sometimes as they lay in bed — and pulled their hair.

There were a few more notable witnesses in the Daniel Ehrlick first-degree murder case Wednesday:

    * The jury heard testimony from Ann Moser, who handles a cadaver-smelling dog for the Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue team. She said her dog did not detect any decomposition in Ehrlick’s apartment when they searched on July 25, 2009. Moser told the jury she would have liked to had 45 minutes, but only had 15 minutes to search. She also told the jury if someone was killed at the apartment and the body was moved quickly, there likely would not have been any decomposition smell in the first place.

    * Boise police officer Mattie Chally, who helped search Oak Park Village Apartments for Robert Manwill on July 25, told the jury that both times she saw Melissa Jenkins that day Jenkins appeared emotionless, including when fire crews drained a duck pond to look for the boy. Chally said Jenkins’ demeanor appeared different when she saw her later at press conferences, when Jenkins appeared to show emotion.

    * Janet Lawler, a victim witness coordinator for the Boise police who spent a lot of time with Ehrlick and Jenkins in the days after Robert was reported missing, said the couple seemed very suspicious of police. She also said Ehrlick refused to talk to her when she asked if he wanted to talk about Robert, while most parents who have a missing child appreciate the chance.

Detective Mark Ayotte told a jury Tuesday that he and other officers investigating the disappearance of Robert Manwill were frustrated that Daniel Ehrlick was not able to provide a clear timeline of what happened before he called 911 to report the boy missing just after 10 p.m. July 24, 2009.

Ayotte was the third Boise detective to try to get Ehrlick to explain what happened that weekend, when Ayotte and an FBI agent interviewed him July 26.

But it took Ehrlick an hour and 45 minutes to fill out a three-page narrative, Ayotte said, and some of what he included didn’t match up with what police later determined.

    In Ehrlick’s version:

    • Robert, 8, began asking him if he could go to a birthday party in their apartment complex around 7 p.m. He said the boy played in the complex’s playground throughout the evening.

BOISE — Melissa Jenkins was in court Monday for a hearing related to her former boyfriend, Daniel Ehrlick’s murder trial.

He’s accused of murdering Jenkins’ 8-year-old son Robert Manwill.

She’s pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting his murder.

The jury heard testimony and evidence that Ehrlick eventually accused his father of taking Robert.

An FBI agent said in one particular conversation with Ehrlick, he weakly denied involvement with Robert’s disappearance and began crying.

Then, Ehrlick told the agent someone close to him must have taken Robert, eventually saying he was covering for his dad, Daniel Ehrlick Sr.

The agent had already cleared Ehrlick’s father of being a likely suspect, but Daniel Ehrlick insisted.

So detectives had Ehrlick confront his dad on the phone, accusing him of withholding information. His dad eventually got mad and hung up.

Here is a clip from that phone conversation:

“Where’s Robert? That’s all I want to know,” asked Daniel Ehrlick.

“Wait a minute, are you saying I got Robert?,” replied Daniel Ehrlick Sr.

“No, I’m not saying nothing. I just want to know,” said Daniel Ehrlick.

“I don’t know where he’s at!” replied Daniel Ehrlick Sr.

After the jury went home Monday, Melissa Jenkins came into the courtroom and sat in the jury box with her attorneys.

The judge agreed to give Jenkins immunity both on the stand and in pre-testimony meetings with the prosecution.

Also, she made decisions on what Jenkins can and cannot say on the stand.

Attorneys can ask Jenkins any questions about what she saw or knew about this case.

They can also have her say that she’s pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting in the torture murder of her son, but she can not say she aided and abetted Daniel Ehrlick.

Daniel Ehrlick Sr. had to fight back tears Tuesday when a large picture of Robert Manwill was shown to jurors at his son’s trial for first-degree murder.

Minutes later, Ehrlick Sr. covered his face with his hands to regain his composure after telling the jury about the boy.

“He was a great kid,” Ehrlick Sr. said. “I enjoyed his company a lot.”

But Ehrlick Sr. briefly was considered a potential suspect soon after the boy disappeared in 2009.

Earlier in the trial, the jury heard how Daniel Ehrlick had said his father was likely to blame for the boy’s disappearance — even after the FBI said that the elder Ehrlick had been investigated and pretty much cleared.

Ada County prosecutors say the story was bogus — part of a series of lies and untruths Ehrlick told police to cover up how he beat the 8-year-old to death and put his body in the New York Canal.

On Tuesday, Ehrlick Sr. got to defend himself in person, emphatically telling Ada County Deputy Prosecutor Jill Longhurst, “No ma’am” when asked if he had anything to do with Robert’s disappearance.

While the younger Ehrlick told the FBI he was sure his father was involved with the abduction… snip

Live updates from the Daniel Ehrlick murder trial
Ehrlick’s dad takes stand, won’t look at his son

BOISE — One-hundred witnesses have now been called to testify against Daniel Ehrlick in his murder trial.

Today was day 20 of prosecutors trying to prove to the jury that Ehrlick murdered 8-year-old Robert Manwill in 2009.

The first two-and-a-half hours were dedicated to one witness, a Boise Police detective who worked closely with Ehrlick and Jenkins.

We also heard from several people who knew Robert.

“He would always leave with a hug and say, ‘You’re the best teacher ever!’ He was a sweet little boy,” Robert’s first grade teacher Karen Harshman said.

Robert’s first grade teacher in Boise remembered him fondly and recounted her sadness and his excitement when he moved to New Plymouth with his dad midway through the year.

“I just knew when he got into his new school that his teacher would love him as much as I did,” Harshman said.

The New Plymouth school secretary says they did love Robert.

“He was a wonderful little boy,” New Plymouth school secretary Tammy Arnzen said.

She told the jury Robert was very caring, sharing a story about Robert getting picked on while on recess.

“He said, ”Well, if he was picking on me, that means he was leaving somebody else alone. And he was just that kind of kid. He was always thinking about other people,” Arzen said.

More Boise Police detectives testified about the large-scale search for Robert.

“We had a missing boy and we were trying to find him, and time was of the essence and we took that very seriously,” BPD Detective Brent Frogley said.

And jurors heard more about the problems detectives said they had getting information from Daniel Ehrlick and Melissa Jenkins.

“In this case, we took a number of extremely abnormal investigative steps that our department had never taken in its entire history to try to find Robert, but while these things were happening we were being confronted,” BPD Detective Matt Brechwald said.

Jurors heard tapes of Ehrlick and Jenkins yelling at the detective — something police found increasingly frustrating.
“I was yelled at, I was confronted, I was accused of lying and conspiring and doing things like that. And these are just the normal investigative steps,” Brechwald said.

Also today, we heard from the mother of a boy who often played in Ehrlick’s apartment complex and was Robert’s age at the time he died.

We saw his photo and it was explained he had a similar haircut to Robert.

It appears prosecutors are trying to explain why some adults and children maybe just thought they’d seen Robert outside the day he was reported missing.

Another piece of testimony that fits into a bigger picture came from a neighbor who heard people talking about a canceled birthday party.

Ehrlick’s story to police was that Robert went missing when he went to a birthday party without permission.

But witnesses to this point have testified they knew nothing of a birthday party.

    Dead bugging. The Chair.

Continually isolating a child alone in room. Making him eat food he hated so much he vomited. Hitting him in the buttocks with a piece of wooden molding. Not allowing him to go to the bathroom or get a drink of water when thirsty. Locking him in a closet. Making the 8-year-old boy sleep in a crib.

These are all the things that either Daniel Ehrlick admitted to police that he did to Robert Manwill or his family members say they saw him do in the summer of 2009.

Taken together, those punishments add up to torture, a medical expert told the jury on the 21st day of Ehrlick’s first-degree murder trial.

Robert Manwill’s father breaks silence during Daniel Ehrlick’s murder trial. He would have gotten his son back ‘in a heartbeat’ if he had thought the boy was in danger, Manwill says.

Mr.Manwill, a veteran of the first Gulf War who works at Gowen Field, started to cry when he talked about his first child, Michael Manwill, who was killed by his mother in Louisiana while Manwill was on active duty in 1993.

Manwill’s ex-wife eventually pleaded guilty to manslaughter and went to prison. His parents took custody of his other son while he tried to figure out what to do next.

“I didn’t know how to deal with loss … I lost everything that mattered to me,” Manwill said.

He eventually found his way to Melissa Jenkins and a second tragedy: the death of his son Robert in the summer of 2009.

Mr.Manwill, who now has two biological children and a stepdaughter he considers his own flesh and blood, has been silent since Robert was reported missing by first-degree murder suspect Daniel Ehrlick on July 24, 2009. Though he appeared with his wife, Afton, at several press conferences during the high-profile search for the boy, he did not comment publicly.

Robert ManwillEhrlick jury will hear about Melissa Jenkins’ guilty plea

It is still not clear when Robert Manwill’s mother will testify against her former boyfriend

Fourth District Judge Darla Williamson gave Melissa Jenkins a direct message Monday.

“I do want to tell Ms. Jenkins, I expect you to testify truthfully,” Williamson said.

Jenkins’ own attorneys have said she was a habitual liar, and that’s partly why the prosecutor wants her guilty plea, and its timing, to come out in court.

Prosecutors say they will meet with Jenkins, likely sometime this week, in the presence of a Boise police detective, to interview her about her testimony before they call her to the stand.

Jenkins also acknowledged that on at least one occasion, Robert complained to her that her boyfriend, Daniel Ehrlick, had hurt him by “dropping a knee” on his stomach.

Ehrlick admitted that on at least one occasion he did hold Robert Manwill in place during a punishment, by putting his knees on his abdomen and using his weight (about 260-270 pounds) to hold him in place

Longhurst said that while Ehrlick doted on 18-month-old Aidan, he treated Robert badly and punished him often, saying the boy’s “last weeks were filled with fear, pain, and helplessness.”

Ehrlick forced Robert to sleep in a crib in a junk room in the Boise Bench apartment Ehrlick shared with Jenkins, made the boy eat food he hated and hit him with a board in the buttocks and back, Longhurst said.

Robert often would throw up the oatmeal and raisins he was forced to eat, Longhurst said, and police found dried vomit in the room where he was forced to live.

Longhurst told the jury about how the 280-pound Ehrlick kneed Robert in the chest, during a discipline the boy knew as “dead bugging,” which she said likely caused the fatal tissue-tearing injuries July 24, 2009 — the day he went missing.

Prosecution in Ehrlick murder trial rests its case in Boise

BOISE — Prosecution in the Daniel Ehrlick murder trial rested its case just after 11 a.m. Tuesday without calling the mother of the young victim to the stand.

Melissa Jenkins could have been called to testify against her former boyfriend, Daniel Ehrlick, who is accused of murdering her son, 8-year-old Robert Manwill.

The court ruled to compel her testimony last summer; earlier this year, she pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting the torture murder of her son. Prosecutors could have asked her about the plea, but not who she aided and abetted. Because she hasn’t testified, as of now, the jury will not consider her plea in their deliberations.

Prosecutors also filed a number of motions regarding her possibly testimony. The court had granted her immunity from greater charges for any testimony or statements to prosecutors before testifying. Though she didn’t have immunity with defense, the judge said Ehrlick’s attorneys would have had greater latitude to cross-examine Jenkins.

Prosecutors could still call Jenkins as a rebuttal witness, though it is uncertain whether they might do so.

The defense is scheduled to start presenting its witnesses and exhibits (if attorneys choose to present anything) on Thursday at 1 p.m.

The judge told jurors she estimated attorneys would deliver closing arguments the following Thursday (June 30) afternoon. The jury would be allowed to deliberate as long as they wanted that evening, or choose to come back Friday if they were not finished. The jury will not meet 4th of July weekend (even if they are not finished).

The Ehrlick murder trial is in its sixth week.

Daniel Ehrlick is accused of murdering the young boy in 2009. Prosecutors allege that abuse by Ehrlick resulted in Robert Manwill’s death.

Jenkins could be called as a rebuttal witness if Ehrlick’s attorneys mount a defense, which was scheduled to start Thursday.

Defense attorneys are generally able to ask witnesses only about the evidence they present when they take the stand — but in this case, Williamson told lawyers on both sides they would likely have broader latitude. (I believe it should be Judge Williamson)

Ehrlick’s attorneys would be able to ask Jenkins about statements other witnesses attributed to her — and these have come up repeatedly throughout the trial.

Any evidence attributed to Jenkins — including statements that question her credibility, like making inconsistent statements — would be fair game for cross- examination. That seems to cover pretty much everything Jenkins told police in the summer of 2009.

Williamson has allowed some “hearsay” about what Jenkins told others because Ehrlick also is accused of conspiring with Jenkins to cover up the murder.

The jury has also heard Jenkins on audiotaped interviews with police.

Prosecution Rests in Daniel Ehrlick Murder Trial

Boise police officer Tom Fleming also testified Tuesday. He talked about Ehrlick’s arrest.

“Sergeant Harrington walked up to the defendant and told him he was being placed under arrest for homicide,” he said. The prosecutor then asked, “Do you recall what happened after that?” Fleming replied, “At that time, the defendant kind of ‘huffed’ and then said ‘prove it.”

Fleming and Trish Burrill were the last two people to take the stand before the state rested its case. They began the process five and half weeks ago, trying to prove to the jury that Ehrlick killed Manwill.

Early on, the defense said the prosecution has no solid proof.

“There’s no direct evidence that daniel did this. This isn’t a case where there’s a confession. There’s not an eyewitness. There’s not a fingerprint,” said Gus Cahill, Ehrlick’s attorney.

The prosecution tried to paint Rhrlick as a violent abuser; capable of torturing, murdering and dumping Robert Manwill’s body in an irrigation canal.

“Most 8 year-olds don’t sleep in cribs,” said one torture expert.

“Would this type of injury be consistant with with a 270-280 pound man dropping his knees on top of the child,” asked the prosecution. “Yes sir,” answered a forensic expert.

They even called in Ehrlick’s own father to establish a pattern of behavior.

“Did you ever see any bruises on Robert,” asked the prosector. Yes. I have,” replied Daniel Ehrlick, Senior.

“I questioned him about the bruise while Melissa was standing there, and I said where did he get that from and she said he knows.” said Ehrlick, Sr.

Manwill’s mother, Melissa Jenkins, did not take the stand. Prosecutors sought permission for that nearly a year ago and got it.

The defense will begin presenting its case on Thursday. The judge says the jury could start deliberating as early as a week from then.
