The Nittany Nightmare: Paterno Fired- Sandusky’s Recorded Sting With Victims Mother Went Missing With Prosecutor Ray Gricar In 2005

WE ARE.. PENN STATE

The thorn in the paw in the largest criminal scandal in recent NCAA history, feels more like a railroad spike today.

The  winningest collegiate coach in American history got sacked yesterday in his 46th year.

The iconic former Penn State University head football coach leaves his legacy shamed by the alleged sexual assaults by Jerry Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator of 23 years, on his watch.

Graham Spanier, president of PSU was also fired.

According to the Pennsylvania Attorney General, Paterno is not facing criminal charges, no word yet on Spanier.

Charged in the scandal to date are:

Gerald “Jerry” Sandusky- 40 counts of felony child sexual abuse, released on $100,000 bond

Tim Curley- PSU Athletic Director and 1976 alumni- charged with perjury and failure to report

Gary Schultz- PSU Senior VP of finance and Business charged with perjury and failure to report

Not charged, but in my opinion, should absolutely be under moral indictment:

Mike McQueary-  Current PSU recruiting coordinator and wide receiver coach who witnessed the sodomy of a child by Sandusky as a 28 year old grad student. He ran home and called his daddy instead of police, leaving the child in the clutches of that monster.

(UPDATE 3:37PM The PSU Board does not plan to fire McQueary, but want him off the field although interim coach Bradley says he will be on the sideline.    Are you people nuts?  I really think the players have enough concerns without wondering if some radical will rush the sidelines to get at McQueary.  Not worth the security breach.)

Yes, that is correct, he witnessed the act in progress of the rape of a child and did nothing to stop it.

Earlier in the week, Jopa announced through a prepared statement that he would be retiring at the end of the season after 46 years at the helm of the Nittany Lions Division 1 dynasty.

While PSU alumnus roars turned into wails for the past week,  it appears this nittany nightmare is just the beginning of the story.

The sexual assault of a 10 year old boy by Sandusky in the shower of the Lasch Football Building during Spring Break  2002, witnessed by a graduate student was never reported to Ray Gricar , Center County Prosecutor on the record.

But was he made aware of it under the radar?

Anthony DeBouf, a district attorney working under Gricar,  says Gricar reviewed evidence and files privately and did not share any of the information with him, in 1998.

You read that correctly, in 1998, when the first alleged incident of Sandusky in the field house shower with a young boy was reported to University Police and the Centre County DA’s office.

According to Graham Spanier, recently fired PSU president,  an investigation was completed by a “child protective agency”  and University Police with the blessing of then PSU counsel Wendell Courtney.

Courtney was and is still an attorney of record for Second Mile.

Spanier said he thought the director of Second Mile, the grass roots charitable effort founded by Sandusky, was alerted through those efforts.

In 1999 Sandusky was offered and accepted an Emeritus status retirement package from PSU where he held full campus access privileges and an office in the very building of the alleged 1998 and 2002 incidents.

The 4th victim named in the indictment against Schultz, Curley and Sandusky claims that decision by Sandusky was precipitated  by a private meeting between he and Paterno.

Sandusky was bitterly upset after a meeting with Joe Paterno in which he was told by JOPA he would never be his replacement as head coach, and that he should retire.

Tony Gricar, Ray Gricar’s nephew, has since revealed that Ray participated in a sting with police where Sandusky admitted showering with a boy whose mother called University Police when Sandusky dropped her son off with wet hair and asked for forgiveness from the family, with the entire meeting surreptitiously recorded.

Gricar viewed police reports and two recorded conversations that Sandusky had with the juvenile victims mother and for reasons that have never been made public, elected not to file charges in the incident.

Approximately 6 weeks later, the case was closed without enough evidence to prosecute.  It is believed the victim had decided to refuse to testify against Sandusky and his Mother believed he would be persecuted in efforts to protect Sandusky and the elite PSU football program.

According to then University Police detectives Ronald Shreffler and Ralph Ralston, following a meeting with Jerry Lauro, investigator with the PA Dept of Public Welfare,  while the behavior was certainly inappropriate, neither victim made allegations of sexual contact rising to the level of criminal activity.

Gricar had nothing to work with.

So.. Was this the case Ray Gricar saw as “the one that got away” he wanted to pursue prior to his retirement?

Sandusky remained with Second Mile, in some cases recruiting it’s board members through last year.

Sandusky founded the Second Mile charity in 1977, a foster and group home environment for disadvantaged boys in various underprivileged social circumstances.  It is believed this was where Sandusky began the lure to prey on his child victims.  Sandusky retired from Second Mile in 2010,  while the grand jury investigation into his victimization of young boys got underway.

The current honorary board of Second Mile reads like the who’s who of ESPN including Andy Ried, head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Matt Millen, ESPN sports analyst, Lou Holtz former head coach of Notre Dame University and yes, “Marky Mark”  Wahlberg.

Only yesterday did I realize I was on their advisory board. I have had no contact or correspondence with Second Mile or Jerry Sandusky since 2009 with the exception of thank you notes for one of their most successful events.

If the allegations are true, I, like the many good people who support Second Mile, am upset over being misled. However, the pain and sadness I feel for the abused children fills me with rage and anyone who enabled this to happen should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Coach Holtz

The development of charitable organizations as a means to not only groom victims but to take advantage of government funding and tax breaks for the privilege came under extreme scrutiny in the late 1970′s with the discovery of Brother Paul’s Children’s Mission on North Fox Island among other organizations.   It is not known if the charitable practices of Second Mile are under investigation at this time.

Second Mile posted a statement on their site, claiming Sandusky has had no interaction with them since he alerted them to an investigation involving a boy in 2008.  Someone should have them review their annual report and the Sandusky society named after his parents that he and wife Dottie continue to donate to.

Every one of  Sandusky’s alleged victims,  were “Second Mile” children as far back as 1994.   One of the victims, was contacted by phone prior to his appearance before the grand jury by Sandusky, his wife, and a family friend leaving the message they needed to talk to him regarding an “important matter”.

Victim 7 did not return the call, but this editor would seriously like to know the intent of the call from Mrs. Sandusky, who has not been charged with any crime.

In several alleged incidents, and 8 victims named in the indictment against Sandusky, the only person to ever call police to report him was the mother of a victim whose incident was found to be unchargeable under the law, in 1998.

Ray Frank Gricar

A dedicated and successful prosecutor on the cusp of enjoying retirement,  Ray Gricar disappeared from an impromptu trip to “clear his head”  on April 15, 2005.   Gricar called his live-in girlfriend he met as a clerk in his office Patty Fornicola that morning and said he was going to take a drive in his mini Cooper to Lewisburg,  a town he was known to frequent to purchase select antiques.

Although Gricar was scheduled to take a half day’s vacation previously, he called Patty from his cell phone at 11:30 am and told her he would be taking the entire day off.

When Gricar failed to return that evening, Fornicola was concerned and phoned Bellefonte Police.  The next day Gricar’s “mini” was found locked with his cell phone inside in a Lewisburg parking lot.  His keys and wallet have never been recovered.

Two months later, his work laptop was located in the Susquehanna River and without it’s hard drive against a bridge support, and the hard drive a few months after that on the bank by a woman walking her dog.

In 2009, on the 4 year anniversary of his disappearance, Bellefonte detectives releases startling information.

On his home computer, which was reviewed by a forensic analyst,  showed searches including how to delete a hard drive were found in the weeks leading up to Gricar’s disappearance.

A small amount of cigarette ashes found just inside the driver side window of Gricars car leading investigators to believe he met with someone, spoke briefly through the window, and parked his car.

Subsequent possible sightings of Gricar in Michigan have never panned out and his case is still open.

Tom Bradley,  Jerry Sandusky’s successor as defensive coordinator upon his retirement, is acting PSU head coach will lead the team in their last home game against Nebraska this Saturday.

“We’re in a very unprecedented area,” Bradley said Thursday. “We have to find a way to restore the confidence [in the university] and start the healing process.”

It is beyond shameful what has happened at Penn State. I’m really shocked by the fact that so many people seem supportive of JoePa. You know, he may be a nice guy but he showed a huge lack of judgment. And, when you are the face of a program you get the good and the bad – for years it’s been touted as being such a clean program, for which JoePa got much of the credit. So, he gets credit for this too, especially since he knew about it.

What I really can’t understand is how these people continued to work with Sandusky, even after retirement, let him have an office on their campus, and didn’t think that perhaps that was a bad idea. They told him not to bring kids to the campus anymore – but yet he held camps there through 2008? And, what, it was okay as long as it wasn’t on campus? Sandusky continued to have an office there. What exactly does it take to get shamed? And these are people in charge of young men?

As far as McQueary goes – can you imagine the brutality of actually seeing a young boy being raped? And, that didn’t traumatize you enough to actually go to the police?

And, I have to say – jobs/football program be damned. Besides the safety of the kids you caught the guy raping – what about the other kids he is likely to do it to (or doing it to)? Besides the safety of those kids – what about your own integrity? Do you really want to work at a place that continues contact with someone you literally saw rape a kid? And, really same thing for JoePa? With his reputation and stature he could have done a lot to stop this situation. Would you want all your hard work and reputation ruined by a jerk like Sandusky? Do these people have no self respect?

Excellent research and article, but mostly thank you Blink for expressing our collective outrage. College football is the holy grail, now when are those Penn State rioters going to get angry over boys being raped? Send them back to class, they aren’t learning a thing except how to perpetuate the sins. It gets ugly before it get better, right?

I am so angry at the pompous ego in play here, all for a child raping monster.

Let me be clear. If there are 8 verified victims, there are 100. The litigations alone are going to bankrupt this school. I want McQueary gone. A freaking janitor did more than that self-absorbed assclown in 2000 to the point he almost had a heart attack. That hideous orange mop is not his curse. This is.

Having been a foster parent to special needs children/teenagers – all of whom had been sexually abused as children – I am appalled. What on earth will it take to change this world?

  4. GeorgiaDad says:

I find it interesting that McQuery still has a job at Penn State. Is there more to the story? I initially gave McQ the benefit of the doubt: he was young, intimidated by an upper level coach, was shocked, panicked, didn’t know what to do. I later learned that McQ was 28 at the time (somewhat old for a graduate assistant), and should have known better. Although Sandusky may have been physically intimidating, it seemed he still should have yelled or called security.

I agree with firing the other 4, and feel that Penn State owes the public an explanation for why McQuery was not fired.

I completely agree. As a grad student alone he did not have independent access to that area of the facility. If I had to guess they felt the fact that he reported him to Jopa fulfilled his “escalation obligation”.

There is never going to be a set of circumstances where a grown man walks past a child being raped and does nothing that I will understand and I do not want him drinking out of the same water as these kids, I am that upset.

This piece was very difficult for me, I have close ties to PSU and I have met JOPA more than once.

  5. momofjbsl says:

Reread your piece and am wondering what year McQueary saw the rape of the 10 year old? I am unsure which child’s rape he witnessed. Also, if Ray Gricar felt there was a case that got away and it was this one, why did he disappear? Was he disappeared? Did he commit suicide because he couldn’t face the fact he let it go? The case that got away and disappearing seem contradictory to me so not sure what I’m missing. Also, I’ve ready your update about McQueary. As OperaRach above, I get the impression that the program is more important than young children.

    McQueary witnessed the 2002 incident.

I personally do not believe Gricar committed suicide but I am convinced he met his fate because of something work related. I am speculating the grapevine of new incidents got to him, and someone may have found out.

You see how many people in this case were willing to cover it up for this long? That’s a lot of people with much to lose. I feel it is an uncanny conincidence.

The number one reason the Board HAD to fire college Prez was his failure to keep his Board informed–all the facts & circumstances of Sandusky “retirement”. And, Sandusky should have been fired, reported, & Second Mile notified of the police report in writing. And Paterno should have refused to continue to work for Penn otherwise. And, the career created there for the grad student witness, what a payoff. He had something on the school,

i’ve learned there’s lots of lying coaches in college sports. On my daughter’s sport’s club team, the girls get so many emails from college coaches seeking recruits that say “I saw you at X game…” and the girl was never at that game. Most of these coaches are pennsyvania schools. Maybe it’s in the water there

I just want to say that not all coaches are like that, I have had what I consider some of the best in my time, and know a few I would also place in that category.

Bottom line- this man founded an agency to sexually assault pre-pubescent boys- dozens spent time with him and his family constantly. Who is really going to tell me nobody suspected anything?

    B

  7. Rose says:

About students unable to empathize with raped boys, it goes back to earlier years. Despite adults thinking they’re antibullying, their kids regularly beat up or sanction it in HS. My daughter’s well-fixed HS made the paper for all the homecoming brutality to small boys this fall–ER trips, broken ribs etc inside the school in school hours. It’s the norm. Not rednecks, not poor, just a videogame/TV culture, preying on the weak. It’s also pervasive drugs & alcohol from indulgent parents

  8. Rose says:

IMO Gricar was a victim of organized crime
FBI needs to go back & start on any ties of Gricar’s
    potential targets to organized crime

  9. Becky says:

Wasn’t Ray Gricar’s case on an episode of “Disappeared”? I agree with everything you have said, Blink. Anyone who had knowledge of Sandmonster’s activities should be prosecuted (even his wife). My gosh, she had to know. They adopted 6 children and fostered others. It would probably be inappropriate for me to express my opinion on that one. It appears Sandmonster preyed on children who needed a father figure the most and who were the most vulnerable, all the while being enabled in his disgusting activities. I hope there is a special place in he!! for him.

Comments peppered with self-centeredness. Now is not the time to address healing for the team or the school, now is the time to beg for mercy on behalf of the failure of an institution that chose idolatry over morality (and still is). I will bet any one of my children or grandchildren would have done more than McQueary, from at least age 9 up.

A freaking dog would have bit that old man in the leg at the site of it. It is inexcusable and he has no business whatsoever coaching a tse tse fly. These players, I GUARANTEE YOU, when they learn that he turned his back on that little dude in distress, will never muster a shred of respect for him, period.

He needs to go, he will go, and he will never be on the field Saturday.

Furthermore, I know that this is absolutely about to get uglier. This does not happen over this stretch of time in a vacuum.

  11. KyrasMom says:

What I find utterly appalling is that Sandusky’s wife did nothing to stop it either. How could she NOT know what was going on in her basement. I agree Blink, if there are only 8 (I’ve heard as many as 17) that have come forward, there could be over 100 children that were abused by this man, his wife (for not intervening)and by the others who were CLEARLY aware this man was a sick, self serving pedophile and they ALL DID NOTHING. I think McQueary only reported it so he could absolve himself of the guilt of seeing it firsthand. How sad for those kids. He created that program so he had an endless supply of victims who he KNEW wouldn’t dare say anything. Special place in HeII is correct…….I also cant’ understand why these IDIOT students are rioting over Paterno’s firing. Seriously? That man pushed it under the rug and moved on. Why should he be allowed to retire with benefits, etc? He should be in jail too AND I don’t think that prosecutor is dead – I think he’s hiding out somewhere…..

Tom Bradley, Acting Head Coach said today:
“We’re in a very unprecedented area,” Bradley said Thursday. “We have to find a way to restore the confidence [in the university] and start the healing process.”

    Whoa there Mr Bradley.
Before ANY confidence or healing can take place the WHOLE TRUTH of who knew about this needs to be made public – and those in the know also held responsible.
(and may I suggest by lining up for castrations in the town square)

Seems this wasn’t the worlds best kept secret – many were aware of this and said/did nothing to protect these children!!
For example … which “child protective agency” knew of this and chose to keep this quiet?
Which members of the University Police?
Ex- PSU counsel Wendell Courtney and staff.
Jerry Lauro, investigator with the PA Dept of Public Welfare and staff.
Who all @ Centre County DA’s office.
They had recorded conversations with Sandusky and these families – likely him begging and bribing them to keep quiet for the “good of the team.
    BS!!!!!

High on my disgust list is Sandusky’s wife Dottie.
Not only has she stood by this pervert – but has attempted to cover-up his POS activities by calling the victims family members.
The Sandusky’s have 6 adopted children and also are involved in Foster Care.

Allowing Mike McQueary to be in anyway associated with PSU Athletic Dept – let alone coach the game against Nebraska this Saturday is outrageous.
The man had the chance to speak up and end Sandusky’s despicable acts years ago – had he had the balls – he could have saved many other little boys from the same fate.
Instead he gave a half hearted attempt to tell a higher up – then ran home to Daddy and never followed up.
Obviously he KNEW that nothing had been done to stop the abuse – b/c he continued to see Sandusky with full access @ PSU and not locked up years ago.

This story is ready to blow and many more will fall.
A good read at link below.
“Jerry Sandusky Rumored to Have Been ‘Pimping Out Young Boys to Rich Donors,’ Says Mark Madden”
    http://www.nesn.com/2011/11/jerry-sandusky-rumored-to-have-been-pimping-out-young-boys-to-rich-donors-says-mark-madden.html

I think Second Mile was the perfect cover for a POS like Sandusky.
Second Mile deserves a very close look to see who knew what – there had to be knowledge and participation from some.
BUT … I don’t believe people like Lou Holtz had any knowledge of what was happening.
    MOO.
Below is Lou’s full statement on the PSU/Sandusky powder keg.
    http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7214183/statement-lou-holtz

Sammy- Holtz did not even know he was on the board, I linked it in the piece, how many times do we think that statement is going to be made in the coming weeks?

Unequivocally, accounting of that charity, and I am not just talking money, I want to know if there are any kids unaccounted for, or that he may have had contact with.

  13. Sammy says:

That so many people kept quiet and allowed this POS Sandusky to keep his balls attached is an outrage.

  14. Jane says:

This is such a disturbing story. I don’t think we will ever know who saw/heard what. I personally feel too many turned a blind eye to protect their football program at whatever the cost. This man is a disgrace to the human race. I would imagine there will be many more victims coming forward. I wonder what the story is with Mr. Sandusky’s adopted kids. What a disgusting PIG.

  15. Becca says:

How did all of this come out now?

Many of the boys, if we can count on the given timelines, have turned into men. Men who had to know there was a possibility this guy was still hurting children. We have to face the reality that many of them (as adults) kept their mouths shut too knowing there was an animal out there. Some must be around the same age McQueary was. Just saying. Different circumstances of how the knowledge was gained clearly, but the same knowledge non-the-less.

Maybe one of them stepped forward? I can’t find how it was released.

As an aside – I don’t know that these men DIDN’T come forward. But, even if they did and got blocked or turned away or ignored, THEY should have pushed too. We must be child advocates!!! Any ADULT who knew this guy was out there, no matter how they knew, should have raised hell.

When this whole story comes out and the complaints that were not run down surface, it is beyond sickening.

That is a lot of child abuse and he should be locked up and never see the light of day. These children I am sure have endured years of struggle
and shame. It will stay with them forever. The others that witnessed it and did nothing in my opinion, deserve the same fate.To see this happening and not doing anything is just so unbelievable.I don’t think
Penn State will recover after this one,it’s just been too much damage done for too long. They were talking about this in the news tonight and
taking about what needs to be done now to stay intact.

  17. Dee says:

All day I have been reading this story and boiling over with outrage. I was hoping you, Blink, would run a story on it and thank God, you did. Your priorities are in the right place and you never disappoint. I have so many questions:
    1. Why did no other team try to hire such a huge coach after his early retirement? Seems odd they wouldn’t want to snatch him up considering his reputation? I’m wondering if everyone in college football, not just Penn State, was aware of why he “retired”?
    2. Did you read the story about him pimping out the boys to big donors? Do you know if there is any truth to that?
    3. Do you think Gricar’s disappearance is connected to this? Would these people actually murder or “disappear” a D.A. just for the their football program…and could they get away with it?

Regarding McQueary, after Sandusky, he is the most contemptible. I will be watching Saturday to see if Tom “let’s begin the healing” Bradley will have the nerve to have this coward on the field. (Is he talking about the victims healing or the football program’s? Tacky statement if you ask me.)

    1. Unlike most of my colleagues, I give credit where credit is due, check this out:

http://www.timesonline.com/columnists/sports/mark_madden/madden-sandusky-a-state-secret/article_863d3c82-5e6f-11e0-9ae5-001a4bcf6878.html This appeared in April, nobody paid attention.

I am of the opinion that that the recruiting world for coaching staff is a very small one in terms of “talk” and on the surface alone, for Sandusky to retire under Jopa when he did, would be a red flag for any school to ask the right questions of the right people. I have no doubt that as part of his retirement package, he could not receive other offers given his emeritus access.

    2. Yes, I have read it, and yes, I believe there will be a measure of truth in it, and it is why I not so subtlely put the North Fox reference. I find the 1977 filing very, very telling. Sandusky is no walking brain trust. When in doubt, follow the money. If he was raping kids in the open, do we really think a person just have that level of arrogance, or do we think there is a reason they did not fear?

    3. I think the Gricar disappearance and murder (my belief this is a homicide) may be connected and needs further investigation. I find the taskforce appointments timing interesting, and there are complaints from Second Mile parents that will be surfacing from the time of Ray’s disappearance.

Thank you for the kind words, rough piece to write.
    B

ps. They better fire McQueary, like now.

  18. erose says:

How in the world, and who in the world, made him step down from coaching and yet, did nothing to get him the heck out of Second Mile when it was clear what he was doing. It is deplorable enough not to notify authorities out of misguided loyalty but to allow him to stay in a position where other children are in harms way, goes beyond, beyond. I can see the deal being made now, and it makes me sick. “I’ll retire from coaching, but I keep my job with the little boys.” Barf.

  19. daydreamer says:

Even more sickening Sandusky wrote a book called “Touched: The Jerry Sandusky Story”

Sandusky dedicated “Touched” to “all the people who have touched my life.” As for his own life, Sandusky started the second chapter of the book with this:

I had always professed that someday I would reap the benefits of maturity, but my lifestyle just wouldn’t let me. There were so many things I had done in my life – so many of them crazy and outlandish. But I have always had fun, and one this is for certain: My time on this earth has always been unique. At the times when I found myself searching for maturity, I usually came up with insanity. That’s the way it is in the life of Gerald Arthur Sandusky.

And after “retirement” Sandusky just sauntering around the campus and going to games and carrying on like there’s not a thing in the world that could touch him. He felt protected to be sure…….there is way more to this than meets the eye. Disgraceful.

As a sex assault victim, I want him to have his privacy. As an advocate, he was violated by a person in a position of public trust- and his account could inspire others who may not be coming forward because of fear, leaving other sick pedos out there to re-offend.

It is his choice, and I pray for whatever he decides is best for him.

Blink, I more than puffy-heart you. Thank you from the depths of my heart for addressing this. I disagree about McQuery’s moral obligation, however. McQuery witnessed a ten year-old boy being anally raped and did not report it to police. Not child protection. Not his daddy. Not the other good ol’ boys. McQuery needs to consider the hell this boy and countless others have repeatedly endured because of his own inaction. He needs to slither away like the rest of them. Has anyone petitioned to yank the Sandusky’s foster care license yet? Jesus, the rage. Occupy this!

Hejlena- I think you may have misunderstood my snark, but thank you.

He should have stopped what was taking place and been the one to call for the police immediately. He wasn’t physically intimidated; he was a coward. He could have found a never object and knocked the perverted Sandusky out but he did NOTHING. Oh, I’m sorry, he called his father?? He wasn’t a 12 year-old seeing a neighbor kick a puppy.

Thanks for all the hard work, Blink.

As for Mr. Mcqueary…..he should have stepped in and taken Mr. Sandusky by his p…. and well you know I try to be a lady. A 10 year old boy for God Sakes. Mr. Mcqueary was 28, not a child.

I mentioned North Fox Island very specifically because I would like those for whom that message is intended to know it is coming. When the time is right, you know I will have plenty to say, and plenty to say it to.

This from the investigative journalist/analyst who was never going to write about crimes to children.

Mike McQueary should be fired, and charged as an accomplice for not intervening. He failed, morally, and legally to help protect that boy, and could have saved many others if he’d grown a pair and stepped up.

Blink: I understand your position vis a vis the players.

Have you heard that coaches held a meeting with the players today suggesting that their friends and families should wear white to Sat’s game to show support for Paterno? (While there’s a publicized movement already for fans in the stands to wear blue in support of the victims.) Do you really think the coaches are this dim-witted?

And that they’re still all about choosing sides? I so want somebody to grow some balls. Yet I hope nobody does anything stupid in the next few days. A powderkeg there.

Tomorrow is Veteran’s Day, an important day to me and mine. A day of gratitude, sadness, and pride. And this year we mark it under a new cloud of shame over our country. I don’t know if I’m more sad or more angry. I just don’t know how you do this.

It only strengthens my commitment to help LE find Ky’s SZ. I can only handle one at a time.

I am aware that coaching staff is attempting to coach. Having a bit of experience in this area, I have to say they are attempting to focus the kids as best they can, and I support this because it is very possible without focus that players get hurt, and that is the last thing I want. It is not their fault, and they have a job to do Saturday in the midst of these idiots chartered with leading them. I will be cheering them on, because they need it, and because they are victims in this too.

I am at a loss for a good analogy in this matter, but think like they are not players but actors portraying players right now, for their own good.

I am in no way suggesting that the issue is to be minimized, but right now half these students are dealing with parents saying how the hell am I supposed to put this on my kids resume? It is a mess.

I have a relative that is as a sophomore has a standing offer of a full scholarship.

No, they will not be attending, but you can see how the disruption is in the thousands.

Years ago a young, 21 yr. friend was murdered for a youthful, testerone driven outburst, minus deed or action, made to the head a certain “sub culture”. Apparently, his demise was planed months in advance with a “Due Date” of January 1st.

On Jan 1st my friend simply dissapeared. Never a body found, nor a charge made. The FBI was involved.

I was given the gerneral details 34 years later, minus names, specifics, etc., as a kindness by his best friend who was present during the outburst and just knew trouble would follow.

There’s no way to excuse his moral cowardice, and that of a mature 28 yr old McQuery, period!

No matter how good or long a friend this fiend was, once his pedophilia became knowledge he should have been fired, arrested, jailed.

How any of these people who were aware of this monster’s proclivities could allow him to go unstopped, much less stand to look at him, is unfathomable to me!

Again, a major university, in whose trust we put our children, has failed their duty, all for the sake of protecting a reputation which is now shattered. I blame them all!!!

And may they all feel the door slapping them in the ass on their way out of PSU, and hear the clank of steel bars on their in – to prison!!!!!

Seems like Tom Bradley and the others left coaching (for now) are battling it out with the PSU regents/board of trustees as to how this should play this to the public.
PR and trying to shift the focus off the real problem.

More of the same –> in your face defiance on the part of the interim coaching staff.
The last thing these young men on the team need are more distractions- and more pressure from the coaches to feel like they need to take sides in this deplorable mess.
By encouraging friend and fans to wear white on Saturday causes antagonism that might increase the campus wide unrest and lead to more destruction in Happy Valley.
Way to go Bradley with that “healing” you profess.

They all see to be missing the point.
There are countless little boys (many grown men now) – who have been and will continue to deal with the tragedy of ABUSE and RAPE at the hands of Sandusky for the rest of their lives.
These idiots are still worried about JoPa, the BIG $$ athletic department, and glory days of PSU football.
    Nothing has changed.

    Blink,

I haven’t logged in here yet today, because I didn’t expect you to cover this story, at least not yet. I am, of course, so glad you did. From what you know of me, and from my private post yesterday, you know that I had prayed for the BOT’s decisions.

So, my fellow BOCers, I’ve been a faculty member at Penn State for over 20 years. I know some of the people in these articles personally, and there are none that I have not met, except Sandusky (hereafter called Touched) himself. My office is in the heart of campus, and I walked through the “Old Main” patio today. I live close enough to campus and to the downtown, just a short walk, that I stayed up as things developed last night to see if I needed to pack my kids up and “evacuate.”

I heard a few years ago that Touched was a sleaze, and that he was no longer active with the Second Mile. That was, I guess, when Second Mile took the step of removing him from contact with the kids. But I never heard any specifics, and really thought it was more of a financial sleaze kind of thing. Until earlier this year, when I saw the article linked above, and was saddened. However, I had no idea that Touched was still around campus, although apparently he was until last week.

I’ve never been to a Penn State football game, which is definitely the exception around here. I’ve been given tickets, even been invited to a box, but I’ve declined. As a student at another big football school, I was good friends with one of the head coach’s secretaries, and dated a player from another sport. Sometimes the parties overlapped in location, but not in time. One night I didn’t get out soon enough, and got a glimpse of what kind of entertainment was provided to the football stars. Some were warm-and-walking and others were white-and-powdery. So I’ve never been able to drink the football koolade.

But over the years at Penn State, I’ve come to appreciate many things about Paterno. I’ve taught and advised some of the players, and developed great respect for a couple of them. (But not enough to make it to their games.) Paterno’s given them strong and unexpected advice, and the call I got when I gave a starting player an F was simply to ask about the kid’s academic/professional potential so that he could be given good counseling advice. (Let me tell you that would NOT have happened at my alma mater.)

That said, every student in my class today was shocked and appalled NOT at the firings, but that there were not more. They were incredulous that there was a protest (not really a riot) over Paterno’s firing. And, as I walked across campus after class, every group of students that I saw congregated and talking was quiet, subdued, and saying that the students the night before had forgotten about the kids–that the attention had to be on the victims. Some have taken this small step that I link here, although personally I think the game should be cancelled. https://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=241960422529570

Because of long professional friendships with these men, I know some of my colleagues and friends are having a hard time, and a few think the firings occurred too quickly, without waiting for due process. But well over 90 percent say it doesn’t matter what they knew, this happened on Paterno, Spanier, Schulz and Curley’s watch, and that’s enough for them to go. Overall, the Penn State faculty, staff and students feel betrayed, want to do something to help the victims, and are ready to clean house, no matter how many firings that takes. They are so ashamed of these “leaders” and of the behavior of a small percentage of the students last night.

McQuery is a tough one. I believe that he is haunted by his inaction, and his testimony to the grand jury is his attempt to do something, although so very much too late. That said, I find his behavior completely incomprehensible, and know that my own children (I have proof of this) would have taken more action than this man did at 28. Of course, he also deserves to be fired. But it seems really difficult for Penn State to fire him, when he is the one implicating Schulz, Curley and even Paterno. Can the BOTs even do that at this point?

As far as Gricar goes, that’s been another topic of talk around town all week. Personally, I didn’t have much respect for the guy. My opinion is that Gricar cared far far more about whether he got a conviction or plea in a case than about guilt or innocence. I know he would push for a plea even if he had evidence of innocence. And I know he wouldn’t go over big fish unless he was pretty sure he had an airtight case. Pretty proud of that conviction rate. His attempts to wipe his hard drive clean right before his disappearance, and that same hard drive in the river, make it pretty clear to me that his disappearance was preplanned by someone, whether homicide or other. Could this be the reason? Maybe.

I’ve got a lot more I could say, but I’ll cut this off for this post. Peace to the victims and their families. Kudos to the kids who came forward and those who supported them. Newfound courage to McQuery to stay the course with the truth, no matter how badly it makes him look. Shame to those who were too content with the good-guy status of their friend and their own egos to look deeper.

    lizzy

lizzy- a big post, as you know.

I appreciate your objective but truly “inside” perspective. It made me think, as I hope it does others, of the days back in that lecture hall where I felt like it did not matter if I showed up.

Nobody would notice or care, but suddenly, I wanted to.

I just know you are that kind of educator, and I thank you.

This is such a heavy burden on innocents and I feel you have done such an outstanding representation of
the “fallout” trying to persevere- I applaud you.

What a generous post, and no, I had not expected to be in a place to cover this, but I have noticed that rabid anger is my accelerant.

So glad you wrote about this. I trust your articles more than most. My roommate just told me that Sandusky adopted 5 boys. Not sure if this is fact or something he read elsewhere but that should be looked into to. The guy is obviously a sick, twisted, disturbed individual. Would like to know the ages of the boys. Did they progress in age? Did he adopt one and then he got older and adopted a younger boy and so on and so on? (CRIPES it just disturbs me to even type that!)

Also, Gricar disappearing without his computer and hard drive is a little too much of a coinky dink. Smells fishy to me.

as a penn state alum and human being i am disgusted. i have the same exact paw print that’s at the top of this article on my car and i really contemplated taking it off today. this is not the penn state i knew and loved. this is just the tip of the iceburg and this is going to get a lot uglier. i think there’s still a lot more that’s going to come out. my heart is aching for the victims and their families. i think it’s really pathetic that a lot of the penn state community has lost sight of who the real victims are in this and are trying to make joe paterno the victim. he is not, those innocent boys are.

mike mcqueary needs to be fired and charged yesterday in my opinion. he could have saved so many future victims of this monster. he is a disgrace.

next time i get a phone call from the penn state alumni association asking me to donate money, i’m going to decline and tell them i will be donating the money i would have given them to a charity for abused children instead.

I’m just in shock over this, and I’m so glad you’re covering it, Blink, although this has got to be a really tough one. I didn’t delve into this when the story first broke. I’m up in the NW, so I’ve been watching the Sky Metalawa story and monitoring the Kyron updates, of course, but today I saw a headline about Ray Gricar and I started reading and I am just in shock. Too true, this sounds like Ray Gricar was murdered and how in the world did McQueary do nothing? It’s not like he didn’t know! He saw it! A ten year old being subjected to anal rape! I looked it up online and I read that it’s quite painful and psychologically devastating. How could McQueary just walk off? Anyway, I just don’t understand, I don’t understand at all. I don’t understand the kids who are protesting for Paterno, I don’t understand the others involved, I really don’t understand McQueary and WTF is wrong with Dottie Sandusky?!? She had to have known. She had to have known. This is like a bad mid-list mystery novel BUT IT IS TRUE!

And just a note for those following the Kyron Horman case — I’ve been out on the Oregon Coast, and there are Kyron posters up in many of the little towns and stores. I was surprised to see the posters after all this time, and even in remote coastal areas, which is good, and I’ve thanked the store owners and employees for keeping them up.

One additional comment — from what I’ve read and heard, it is very difficult for children of sexual abuse to tell anyone, but it is especially difficult for boys/men to tell because there is additional shame, humiliation, lack of manliness, etc. I was reading about it in terms of the Catholic Church pedophilia cover up, but the same would hold true here. I think that it’s easy to ask why these boys/men didn’t tell, and yes, in a perfect world they would have, but they were victims, and I think that we need to have the empathy and compassion to understand why so many didn’t speak up.
