The Nittany Nightmare: Paterno Fired- Sandusky’s Recorded Sting With Victims Mother Went Missing With Prosecutor Ray Gricar In 2005

WE ARE.. PENN STATE

The thorn in the paw in the largest criminal scandal in recent NCAA history, feels more like a railroad spike today.

The  winningest collegiate coach in American history got sacked yesterday in his 46th year.

The iconic former Penn State University head football coach leaves his legacy shamed by the alleged sexual assaults by Jerry Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator of 23 years, on his watch.

Graham Spanier, president of PSU was also fired.

According to the Pennsylvania Attorney General, Paterno is not facing criminal charges, no word yet on Spanier.

Charged in the scandal to date are:

Gerald “Jerry” Sandusky- 40 counts of felony child sexual abuse, released on $100,000 bond

Tim Curley- PSU Athletic Director and 1976 alumni- charged with perjury and failure to report

Gary Schultz- PSU Senior VP of finance and Business charged with perjury and failure to report

Not charged, but in my opinion, should absolutely be under moral indictment:

Mike McQueary-  Current PSU recruiting coordinator and wide receiver coach who witnessed the sodomy of a child by Sandusky as a 28 year old grad student. He ran home and called his daddy instead of police, leaving the child in the clutches of that monster.

(UPDATE 3:37PM The PSU Board does not plan to fire McQueary, but want him off the field although interim coach Bradley says he will be on the sideline.    Are you people nuts?  I really think the players have enough concerns without wondering if some radical will rush the sidelines to get at McQueary.  Not worth the security breach.)

Yes, that is correct, he witnessed the act in progress of the rape of a child and did nothing to stop it.

Earlier in the week, Jopa announced through a prepared statement that he would be retiring at the end of the season after 46 years at the helm of the Nittany Lions Division 1 dynasty.

While PSU alumnus roars turned into wails for the past week,  it appears this nittany nightmare is just the beginning of the story.

The sexual assault of a 10 year old boy by Sandusky in the shower of the Lasch Football Building during Spring Break  2002, witnessed by a graduate student was never reported to Ray Gricar , Center County Prosecutor on the record.

But was he made aware of it under the radar?

Anthony DeBouf, a district attorney working under Gricar,  says Gricar reviewed evidence and files privately and did not share any of the information with him, in 1998.

You read that correctly, in 1998, when the first alleged incident of Sandusky in the field house shower with a young boy was reported to University Police and the Centre County DA’s office.

According to Graham Spanier, recently fired PSU president,  an investigation was completed by a “child protective agency”  and University Police with the blessing of then PSU counsel Wendell Courtney.

Courtney was and is still an attorney of record for Second Mile.

Spanier said he thought the director of Second Mile, the grass roots charitable effort founded by Sandusky, was alerted through those efforts.

In 1999 Sandusky was offered and accepted an Emeritus status retirement package from PSU where he held full campus access privileges and an office in the very building of the alleged 1998 and 2002 incidents.

The 4th victim named in the indictment against Schultz, Curley and Sandusky claims that decision by Sandusky was precipitated  by a private meeting between he and Paterno.

Sandusky was bitterly upset after a meeting with Joe Paterno in which he was told by JOPA he would never be his replacement as head coach, and that he should retire.

Tony Gricar, Ray Gricar’s nephew, has since revealed that Ray participated in a sting with police where Sandusky admitted showering with a boy whose mother called University Police when Sandusky dropped her son off with wet hair and asked for forgiveness from the family, with the entire meeting surreptitiously recorded.

Gricar viewed police reports and two recorded conversations that Sandusky had with the juvenile victims mother and for reasons that have never been made public, elected not to file charges in the incident.

Approximately 6 weeks later, the case was closed without enough evidence to prosecute.  It is believed the victim had decided to refuse to testify against Sandusky and his Mother believed he would be persecuted in efforts to protect Sandusky and the elite PSU football program.

According to then University Police detectives Ronald Shreffler and Ralph Ralston, following a meeting with Jerry Lauro, investigator with the PA Dept of Public Welfare,  while the behavior was certainly inappropriate, neither victim made allegations of sexual contact rising to the level of criminal activity.

Gricar had nothing to work with.

So.. Was this the case Ray Gricar saw as “the one that got away” he wanted to pursue prior to his retirement?

Sandusky remained with Second Mile, in some cases recruiting it’s board members through last year.

Sandusky founded the Second Mile charity in 1977, a foster and group home environment for disadvantaged boys in various underprivileged social circumstances.  It is believed this was where Sandusky began the lure to prey on his child victims.  Sandusky retired from Second Mile in 2010,  while the grand jury investigation into his victimization of young boys got underway.

The current honorary board of Second Mile reads like the who’s who of ESPN including Andy Ried, head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Matt Millen, ESPN sports analyst, Lou Holtz former head coach of Notre Dame University and yes, “Marky Mark”  Wahlberg.

Only yesterday did I realize I was on their advisory board. I have had no contact or correspondence with Second Mile or Jerry Sandusky since 2009 with the exception of thank you notes for one of their most successful events.

If the allegations are true, I, like the many good people who support Second Mile, am upset over being misled. However, the pain and sadness I feel for the abused children fills me with rage and anyone who enabled this to happen should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Coach Holtz

The development of charitable organizations as a means to not only groom victims but to take advantage of government funding and tax breaks for the privilege came under extreme scrutiny in the late 1970′s with the discovery of Brother Paul’s Children’s Mission on North Fox Island among other organizations.   It is not known if the charitable practices of Second Mile are under investigation at this time.

Second Mile posted a statement on their site, claiming Sandusky has had no interaction with them since he alerted them to an investigation involving a boy in 2008.  Someone should have them review their annual report and the Sandusky society named after his parents that he and wife Dottie continue to donate to.

Every one of  Sandusky’s alleged victims,  were “Second Mile” children as far back as 1994.   One of the victims, was contacted by phone prior to his appearance before the grand jury by Sandusky, his wife, and a family friend leaving the message they needed to talk to him regarding an “important matter”.

Victim 7 did not return the call, but this editor would seriously like to know the intent of the call from Mrs. Sandusky, who has not been charged with any crime.

In several alleged incidents, and 8 victims named in the indictment against Sandusky, the only person to ever call police to report him was the mother of a victim whose incident was found to be unchargeable under the law, in 1998.

Ray Frank Gricar

A dedicated and successful prosecutor on the cusp of enjoying retirement,  Ray Gricar disappeared from an impromptu trip to “clear his head”  on April 15, 2005.   Gricar called his live-in girlfriend he met as a clerk in his office Patty Fornicola that morning and said he was going to take a drive in his mini Cooper to Lewisburg,  a town he was known to frequent to purchase select antiques.

Although Gricar was scheduled to take a half day’s vacation previously, he called Patty from his cell phone at 11:30 am and told her he would be taking the entire day off.

When Gricar failed to return that evening, Fornicola was concerned and phoned Bellefonte Police.  The next day Gricar’s “mini” was found locked with his cell phone inside in a Lewisburg parking lot.  His keys and wallet have never been recovered.

Two months later, his work laptop was located in the Susquehanna River and without it’s hard drive against a bridge support, and the hard drive a few months after that on the bank by a woman walking her dog.

In 2009, on the 4 year anniversary of his disappearance, Bellefonte detectives releases startling information.

On his home computer, which was reviewed by a forensic analyst,  showed searches including how to delete a hard drive were found in the weeks leading up to Gricar’s disappearance.

A small amount of cigarette ashes found just inside the driver side window of Gricars car leading investigators to believe he met with someone, spoke briefly through the window, and parked his car.

Subsequent possible sightings of Gricar in Michigan have never panned out and his case is still open.

Tom Bradley,  Jerry Sandusky’s successor as defensive coordinator upon his retirement, is acting PSU head coach will lead the team in their last home game against Nebraska this Saturday.

“We’re in a very unprecedented area,” Bradley said Thursday. “We have to find a way to restore the confidence [in the university] and start the healing process.”

I’m getting that MANY in the community knew. One victim’s school failed to tell his mother that he was getting pulled out of classes by Sandusky. Boy didn’t tell his mother; later said “you just don’t say ‘no’ to him.” A bit of Michael Jackson deal here; kids getting to hang out & get special favors. And parents too–what, naive??–to figure this out. Jeez; educate the parents. It’s not up to the child to protect himself.

Presidential Medal of Honor? Well, yes, he failed some children, but he did SO much good…seriously? Careerism at its finest and I don’t give a crap about their careers, but how incredibly hard to go against the stream when that’s the example a young person sees. Go along to get along.

They’re all culpable. Rout them all out.

They are predators. They are predators. They are predators.

Pedophiles are insidious, and in terms of criminality, they are some of the most prolific at honing their offense strategies, I chit you not.

Parents- take this opportunity to discuss this with your children, vulgar as it is.

It literally breaks my heart that some of the programs geared to help disadvantaged children with limited guidance as it is, are like a huge trap for people like Sandusky. The only way to fight it is with complete transparency, and y’all will be sick of me until I have my way- but a good start is The Boy Scouts red file.

Did you know that for the most part, pedophiles convince themselves that the children they are preying on actually need and want their kind of “affection”? It is incurable, period.

(Yes, I still have my snark on. It’s how I get thru the day sometimes)

Here is my retired-psychologist summary of why we can’t end this cycle of abuse. It’s already been written by someone, so I’ll snip it here:

“IMAGINE YOU are a 10-year-old child. It is nighttime. You are in an otherwise empty gym shower with a man whom your family trusted. You are both naked, and he is sodomizing you.

You are bewildered, terrified and in physical agony. And then another grown-up enters the shower area. He sees you being anally raped against the wall. All three of you lock eyes.

    Help is here, you think.

Help is here. But your would-be savior runs away. And you’re alone once more with the monster you’d thought was your friend.”

    ____________

It robs a child, a future citizen of the world, of his basic ability to trust. He must now fashion some sort of explanation and coping mechanism for himself.

So, every person that knew early on, especially McQueary’s father, failed that child victim every day of their lives after that. And McQueary’s father was more worried about his son’s CAREER than about that child? Yes, his son’s career would be over. But he could regroup; the victim, not so easily.

Daddy McQueary, and every person down the line: next time you have an opportunity to intervene in the cycle, hold that young man and go WITH him directly to the police and support him thence forward in doing the right thing. It will make a better man of him; he will be able to make a better life because of it.

Off soapbox. But that’s how to end the cycle.

As a volunteer who works with children, I have background checks completed every couple of years, provide personal references, undergo periodic in-person training and monthly online updates. That’s all required for two of the settings in which I volunteer with children.

In a third setting, none of that is required, and it is enough that I am a parent. However, there is at least the requirement that the volunteer-to-child ratio is NEVER one-to-one.

As part of talking to your children about adult behaviors, please be sure that they know to NEVER be alone with an adult volunteer in a school or extracurricular setting. NEVER.

Be sure your children are aware of the “power of secrets,” setting appropriate boundaries, and how to tell someone they trust.

    No follow-up from anyone.

Two grown men (Jim Calhoun first in 2000, McQueary 2002) witness oral and anal rape, and neither do anything to stop it. Instead, they both “tell people”, but not the police. I don’t care what is reported about how Jim the janitor looked like he was going to have a heart attack. He witnessed a boy pinned against the wall being orally raped, and did nothing to stop it.

Another grown man, Petrosky, a janitor, sees Sandusky and a boy 11-13 yrs old, walking out of the showers together (same night Jim witnesses oral rape) HAND-IN-HAND. Then he hears about the rape Jim winesses. He now knows that that HAND-IN-HAND action ain’t between father and son (that’s stretching it to even assume he tried to explain away that behavior). So what does he do with this CLEAR picture of a watching a pedophile walking hand-in-hand with his victim? Nothing.

Joseph Miller, wrestling coach for Clinton County school district, recounts an episode in 2006 or 2007 where he returned to the High School in the evening to retrieve something he forgot. He notices a light on in the weight room, so he goes in to turn it off. He catches Sandusky and a boy lying on their sides, in physical contact, face-to-face. Sandusky jumps up and says their working on wrestling moves. Miller thinks it’s an odd place to practice wrestling. Really, that’s the only thing you find odd? Where are these people’s radar??

I am also frustrated with the parents that would let their kids sleep over at a grown man’s house. EWWW. That’s a huge red flag right there, when a coach wants your kids to sleep over before the big game. WTF? OMG no, no and HELL NO!

May God bless these children immensely, and keep them snuggled securely in his grip.

I think there could be a connection between the Gricar case and this and I hope it is being looked into. Something stinks about that case.

  15. Former PSU Fan says:

In my opinion the known public details of this story only scratches the surface to explain what really has gone on at Penn State for many many years….massive coverups, possible murder and young victims lives shattered forever. Paterno was only concerned with one thing while at Penn State that was protecting his legacy, and the Penn State brand. He was a very defensive person who was always arrogant. All these people who worship at that feet of Paterno are fools, they are spineless. Paterno and that entire coaching staff including the new temporary head coach were all fully ware of Sanduskys actions, but due to fear of in becoming public covered it up for many many years….all of these people need to go to jail. THE LAST FEW PENN STATE FOOTBLL GAMES SHOULD HAVE BEEN CANCELED BY THE NCAA AND THE PENN STATE PLAYERS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO TRANSFER TO ANY SCHOOL OF THEIR CHOICE……WHERES THE NCAA IN ALL OF THIS? Where is the DA who was investigating Sandusky? Are we also going to turn a blind eye on this matter and made to believe he just disappeared from the planet?

If that question is to me, I can assure you, since I brought the connection forth and very specifically detailed the concern, the answer is no. I believe strongly Gricar was murdered for something he knew.

If it is tied to this mess, I can assure you, there are more than a few nervous folks out there right now so I would be paying very close attention to activity if I were an investigator on his case.

I needed a place to vent my frustration and disgust with this case and didn’t want to go off topic on another thread to bring it up. I’m frustrated with the number of people who insist on defending JoePa, claiming that he did what he was “supposed” to do as per school policy and shouldn’t be penalized for his role (or lack thereof, in my opinion) in all of this. WHAT??? For the life of me, how can anyone spew that garbled nonsense and BELIEVE what they are saying??? It is in my humble opinion that anyone and everyone who had knowledge of what that monster Sandusky was up to needs to go…yesterday!!! I am waiting to see if McQueary gets handed his walking papers before the weekend is over (which is my gut feeling).

As everyone can probably tell by my “hat”, being a PA girl I have more than the lion’s share (snark intended) of PSU fans in my circle of friends, myself being one of them. I can count on one hand the number of them that feel the way I do about this. Dear God, what is wrong with people? Wednesday night, when the news of Joe’s firing broke my Facebook page was lit up with posts crying foul. I literally shook with anger at all of these “friends” of mine, where are their heads? Instead of posting the thrashing I felt they all deserved I kept it short and to the point: “For some reason everyone seems to have forgotten who the TRUE victims were here…my prayers are with THEM tonight.” Certainly hope it gave at least one of them reason to step back and think.

How many chidren were abused by Sandusky from his football (grooming, IMO) camps on Penn State’s campuses, I wonder.

My thoughts on Paterno…I have not a shred of doubt that McQueary told him EXACTLY what he saw Sanpervsky do to that 10 year old boy in the showers. Obviously, the Grand Jury believes Curley and Schultz knew the details as well and lied about it. I so agree with Paterno being fired..at the very least he’s a hypocrite and at worst…well, you all have probably read the revolting grand jury report, how many of those boys could he and/or the others have saved? When the above people and other football staff saw Sanpervsky bring a young boy to away games and stay in the same motel room, repeatedly, did red flags not appear?!!! Especially considering the rumors?! Unforgiveable.

I was even more disillusioned by the way some members of the administration and the football staff/team appeared to be outraged by Paterno’s firing and the Curley/Schultz indictments, but barely mentioned, if at all, the horrendous abuse of these victims. Do they need to hire a PR firm, FGS? If they want to restore their reputation (success with honor – for real?) then they better unequivocally unite behind these victims, and these victims alone.

One additional comment — from what I’ve read and heard, it is very difficult for children of sexual abuse to tell anyone, but it is especially difficult for boys/men to tell because there is additional shame, humiliation, lack of manliness, etc. I was reading about it in terms of the Catholic Church pedophilia cover up, but the same would hold true here. I think that it’s easy to ask why these boys/men didn’t tell, and yes, in a perfect world they would have, but they were victims, and I think that we need to have the empathy and compassion to understand why so many didn’t speak up.

    —————————————————————–

As a parent I’d like to be tougher on the now adult victims who knew, along with everyone else who knew. A precedent must be set. For one self preserving reason or another mouth’s were kept shut. Black and White: if you know and you don’t act until it’s stopped, children are being harmed because of your silence. I don’t care what your psychological disposition or self reasoning is. If you are an adult, and your shut mouth means there is a mother picking her little guy up not knowing he’s got a bleeding anus and the taste of a grown mans penis in his mouth, screw your adult shame and humiliation. Your duty to humanity far outweighs any excuse you hold. Morally – nobody’s excuse justifies the silence.

Even more sickening Sandusky wrote a book called “Touched: The Jerry Sandusky Story”

Sandusky dedicated “Touched” to “all the people who have touched my life.” As for his own life, Sandusky started the second chapter of the book with this:

I had always professed that someday I would reap the benefits of maturity, but my lifestyle just wouldn’t let me. There were so many things I had done in my life – so many of them crazy and outlandish. But I have always had fun, and one this is for certain: My time on this earth has always been unique. At the times when I found myself searching for maturity, I usually came up with insanity. That’s the way it is in the life of Gerald Arthur Sandusky.

This university needs to get out of defensive mode and get humble, but I guess their lawyers won’t let them. Lawyers, that I have to wonder, might have been made aware of this situation as far back as 1996? MOO.

    http://onwardstate.com/2011/11/07/penn-state-sandusky-camps-not-affiliated-with-university/

    snip>
Despite a Deadspin report this morning declaring “an implicit endorsement of the camp at the very least,” a member of the Penn State Sports Camp department denied any association between the university and Jerry Sandusky’s Football camps, which were run through Sandusky’s personal company, Sandusky Associates. The camps had been held over the past decade at various Penn State satellite campuses.

Better yet, hit the Second Mile site while it is still up and see all the PSU staff running the freaking things.

No way they can say they are not affiliated.

    Blink,

I have followed the Johnny Gosch story for years. Any chance these two cases are tied in along with the Michigan cases?

    http://www.johnnygosch.com/

    ***********************************

First thing I thought of when the Sandusky story broke is here goes another one just like The Franklin Scandal. But hopefully a better outcome for these victims. I am sure there are 10 more for every one that comes forward. Prayers for all of them.

  32. sam says:

Kinda of ironic that Nebraska and Penn are playing each other in the eve of all this…. Omaha sure had their fair share of organized pedo investigation in the late 80′s.

  33. landlmom says:

    @Sam #33. I didn’t even think of the irony…
I heard about the Johnny case years ago, after my first son was born…
I have been vigilant since… my oldest is on a travel hockey team… he never goes with out me or daddy. He gets frustrated with us because we won’t let him run the hotel with his hockey buddies… some of the hockey parents think we are way too protective and need to cut the cord… should be interesting to see if this awful story changes their view… It is heartbreaking to have to watch our children so closely, but the other option is just to unbearable to endure!!!!
I saw on CNN that they have finally put McQueary on administrative leave… while my take on his role is different than than the majority… I don’t feel that he or the players were safe if he remained…
thoughts and prayers with the victims, staff, students, and faculty – may all of them find the peace and support they deserve.

  34. PA Valley Girl says:

So if there is any truth to the rumor that Sandusky was pimping out these kids to high paying perverts then that was the reason why Ray Gricar disappeared. That must be some powerful people on that list, people who don’t want anyone to know their dirty little secrets!

Yes indeed, this is only the tip of the iceberg!

  35. Jackie Bauer :) says:

@Becca: I totally agree with you. My only point was that I can understand why those boys/men didn’t tell, and I think that it is important to show compassion regarding the severe emotional and psychological damage done. Understanding something and agreeing with it are two very different things and I always feel it is important to separate the two when discussing a complex topic, to detach in order to see all points of view, when possible. What I cannot understand is McQueary and Paterno and the rest. That’s totally unthinkable, unfathomable, and unforgivable in my mind and so I cannot understand or agree, there is no detached devil’s advocate regarding their unconscionable behavior.

Jackie- wise advice on processing, thank you.

CNN is reporting McQueary has been put on administrative leave.
    http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/11/us/pennsylvania-coach-abuse/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

    snipped from link:
On Friday, interim president Rodney Erickson announced that he and Mark Sherburne, the school’s interim athletic director, made the decision to put McQueary on administrative leave. A day earlier, the school athletic department announced he wouldn’t coach in Saturday’s game against Nebraska due to “multiple threats” against him.

“It became clear that Coach McQueary could not function,” Erickson told reporters.

I believe that there is a much larger ring of powerful people on that list in State College and I believe that Ray Gricar was going to do something about it and was murdered because of it. Too many cases of sexual abuse against children have been lost along the way in Centre County and have never come to trial. I know someone personally that was bound over for court for abusing his step son and it never went to trial and that was 15 years ago. The predator worked at Toftrees at the time. Quite a coincidence! I don’t think so.

I just have a hard time believing a board that large hadn’t heard a thing – a rumor or two? The board hobnobs with alumni, recruits, staff, fundraisers, attends cocktail parties, games, ummm this is all larger than life. What’s the point of a board if they don’t have a clue what’s going on and aren’t involved?

  42. RooMommy says:

“According to PennLive.com, one of the PSU coaches gathered several players in a room on campus and allowed McQueary to speak to the team via speaker phone.

McQueary reportedly told the team, “I wanted to let you guys know I’m not your coach anymore. I’m done.”

McQueary also told the team he’s not at the University, but in protective custody after receiving several threats … and “double fisting” booze.”

    http://www.tmz.com/2011/11/11/mike-mcqueary-protective-custody-double-fisting/

McQueary has been placed on administrative leave but it doesn’t sound as if he expects to come back. I have to agree with him.

This freaking guy. No, he is not coming back, and he should not. I am working on my anger wrt to his actions but unfortunately for me it is not subsiding in the least.

  43. A Texas Grandfather says:

Thanks for the great article Blink. I realize how painful this was to research and write as you are a sports person.

This is the result of big money in a sports program and an athletic department and a school administration that was complicent in allowing this to happen in order to protect a reputation. The very idea of a 28 year old coach observing a child rape and not reporting it to the police or to the county DA is beyond my comprehension. He should be charged as an accessory.

To say that I was more than angry is putting it mildly. This entire university athletic program IMO needs to be shut down immediately by the Attorney General of Pennsylvania and all the athletes allowed to transfer to another school.

The fallout from this may reach a lot of big time doners and other sports figures. Is organized crime involved here? IDK.

Your figure of 100 victims may be a low number. Someone needs to put together a program to protect the identity of the victims and their famlies to help them deal with the problem.

The sad part of this revelation is there are probably other schools where bad behavior is being covered up at this very moment.

    _______________________________________________________________
The fact that you can’t is a testament to the censorship that we live under today. There is nothing in it that was untrue and there was a time when truth could be told without worrying about offending a powerful special interest group. I do understand, however, that publishing it would be incendiary and so you can keep this response private as well if you choose. My sole interest is protecting children, many of whom are now being corrupted with society’s blessing or due to the inability of individuals to speak out.

Absolutely not true. You want to say that Gay men are the same as pedophiles and you think that is helpful to protecting children? Even if you did not mean your comment the way it reads, which I suspect, one of the “challenges of change” is drafting a message that is actually heard and absorbed.

Making generalizations and stereotypes without distilling facts is not how we get there, not on this issue, and if you doubt my word, research how many bills specifically addressing this issue hit the floor, or for that matter the campaign trail. Pedophiles and Predatory pedos are taboo.

Idiots think if they do not talk about it does not exist.

I say tell that to the 10 year old (s) whose nights are likely filled with the smell of that fat sweaty rotted toothed freak mixed with the face of the one who could have saved him that fleeting moment.

I am boiling over. You are boiling over, we are all boiling over. More boiling just evaporates the water- what we need is a bigger pot.

That takes diplomacy, message, and call to action, and like it or not, it is a freaking science to get there.

It is beyond incendiary, and with much respect, your facts were incorrect in the first place. Here is the indictment:

    http://www.freep.com/assets/freep/pdf/C4181508116.PDF

    Victim 1= age 11
    Victim 2= age 10 (approx)
    victim 3 = age 12
    victim 4 = age 12
    victim 5= age 7, first assault 8
    victim 6= age 7 or 8
    victim 7= age 10
    victim 8= age 11

Sandusky may be gay, as in a secondary choice to preying on pre-pubescent and pubescent boys, I don’t know, but predatory pedophiles are just that. All 13 or younger.

It is important we attack the issue the right way.

I hope I have presented my objections respectfully and appropriately, as I do believe your advocacy is true, and that is irreplaceable.

    here with a heavy heart…
my husband’s two late-20s cousins are proud PennState grads and have become a lawyer and a nurse, currently. Each have their grad pic with the Nittany Lion as their profile pics and are traveling great distances to be at that game tomorrow. They were both active track & fielders and one was a rower all four years. They are going to support the school that gave them an INCREDIBLE education and to support the athletes. Don’t know if I would do it… alumni must be reeling…

The day this broke, I read an article about McQueary… I have searched and searched, but have read SO MUCH off so many diff sites I cannot link… however, I am finding it hard to believe I read it, then Never saw it spoken about HERE, where everything gets gotten by BLINK!!

In any case, if anyone has clearer info on the McQ/Sandusky family relations, hit me up! Thanks friends, chins up, EYES OPEN!

Jane, I did some editing on your post. I have a concern that some of that is case sensitive, and relates to the privacy issue of a victim. You see where I am going with that.

  46. lizzy says:

    Dear Penn State community,

This note is the first of many that you will receive from me as Penn State’s president. I will be sending emails periodically as part of my promise to you to provide meaningful and timely updates.

Today I am outlining my promise to the Penn State community, which includes the naming of an ethics officer and a commitment to transparency as the University moves forward.

Right now, the nation’s eyes are upon us, looking at where we will go from here. Many of you already are representing this University’s high standards for honesty and integrity. It is imperative that every member of our community model the best that Penn State has to offer as we begin to rebuild the confidence and trust that has been shaken this past week.

Please join me in this effort to rebuild our community. Below, you will find my promise to all of you.

President Erickson’s Promise to the Penn State Community

    1. I will reinforce to the entire Penn State community the moral imperative of doing the right thing—the first time, every time.

    - We will revisit all standards, policies and programs to ensure they meet not only the law, but Penn State’s standard. To oversee this effort, I will appoint an Ethics Officer that will report directly to me.

    - I ask for the support of the entire Penn State community to work together to reorient our culture. Never again should anyone at Penn State feel scared to do the right thing. My door will always be open.

    2. As I lead by example, I will expect no less of others.

    - I will ensure proper governance and oversight exists across the entire University, including Intercollegiate Athletics.

    3. Penn State is committed to transparency to the fullest extent possible given the ongoing investigations.

    - I commit to providing meaningful and timely updates as frequently as needed.

    - I encourage dialogue with students, faculty, alumni, and other members of the Penn State Community.

    4. We will be respectful and sensitive to the victims and their families. We will seek appropriate ways to foster healing and raise broader awareness of the issue of sexual abuse.

    5. My administration will provide whatever resources, access and information is needed to support the Special Committee’s investigation. I pledge to take immediate action based on their findings.”

  47. lizzy says:

Jane, Here’s the current roster of the Penn State BOTs:

    http://www.psu.edu/trustees/membership.html

Note that this is a changing roster, a combination of elected and appointed, and the members are not the same over an extended period of time. I still understand your point, and agree that there may have been opportunities to know, but that doesn’t necessarily reflect the current board. It’s different than a corporate (or nonprofit) board that is much more long-term and static.

  48. lizzy says:

Had a conversation with former colleague of the predecessor, was all positive, fwiw.
