We don’t or at least I don’t know where the plane was located at the time of the assault. I am not even certain that Spanier has a Commercial license. He could be checked out to fly the airplane as long as there is a pilot with a commercial rating in the left seat.

I don’t think JS would ever have needed access to the airplane,so he would not have door keys. Although it is possible that he and a someone else took young people onto the plane by giving a false reason for needing to show it to the boys.

Steve you are correct about the abuse. We don’t know just what it was, but it created a need for corrective sugery. It could be just brutality from an abusive parent and have nothing to do with sex.

    Beejay

Thanks for your concern. Facts are things that get into reports. Sometimes they are truth as well. Your comments about how we see people and their behavior are right on the mark. One time one thing, another something else. All based on our total experience and knowledge. Human behavior is so very complex. Getting a complete understanding from written information, is not easy. It helps if one has an experience guide.

Spanier’s research years, pre-1990, delve into issues of pre-marital, extramarital sex as it relates to the union of marriage.

    http://articles.philly.com/2012-08-24/news/33343430_1_sociology-researcher-administrators

“Spanier has not studied child sexual or physical abuse. In a 1989 paper, though, he wrote about his own troubled background, which included a physically abusive father. He marveled that he had somehow emerged nonetheless with an abiding respect for the family as an institution. Clearly, thousands of children were damaged by their dysfunctional families, but Spanier wondered how some of them came through it with a strong desire to make the families they created work.

‘Why do many children, like me, experience abuse, disruption, poverty, or hunger, yet somehow, against great odds, reach adulthood with the notion that family life can be rewarding?’ he asked.”

And here is the rub and may have bearing on the Sandusky case. Referring to research he did in Ames, Iowa, he concluded:

“‘We choose to view deviant behavior simply as behavior that some value and others consider wrong. An individual’s behavior becomes deviant only when others define it as deviant.’”

    Puhleeezzze.

Archiving here. In the obit for Donald G. Abbey’s father, who died in Feb 2005, there was no wife or children named for Donald. His dad was a successful dental surgeon, who shared the outdoorsman interests that Donald has.

Erose, I finally read the glossy PR publication with Abbey’s Catalina something-something berth for megayachts. Looking at the description of that operation, there could be room for someone with an obscure, convoluted financial relationship with Abbey.

I can’t find a reference tonight, so I’m not sure if I’m recalling this from reading it or from hearing it from GS. But I believe the abusive injuries were a broken and rebroken nose, that has caused problems despite adult resculpting.

  7. Rose says:

    @beejay.
true of any of the all cash purchases.
Their speed, size, & frequency is more indicative
of a group than a someone, don’t you think? How often does he frequent
Bellagio. He managed one purchase in Palm Springs himself. The
articles also kept saying, “after a short due diligence”
so imo one investment goal was to rapidly move cash into commercial properties in the US.
Interesting he chose properties on or abutting airports. Yacht bldg takes place on the ocean
with docks. Mega Yachts too are grand transportation. I’m suspicious of a CIA project or something
else. Pedo ring seems small potatoes for these investments no matter how lucrative.
maybe he just has middle eastern investors, or other countries with plenty of billionaires now

  8. beejay says:

Despite shared suspicions of Spanier, I’m having a hard time investing much in the notion that he might have piloted the plane for the abusers. Partly because the witness said no pilot or crew were around, which kind of makes me think the witness knew this plane had a regular flight crew. And I’m not sure Spanier could work other people’s trips into his schedule. And I sure don’t think he’d create the paper trail that hiring himself out as a commercial pilot would create.

So many people are pilots. And the ones I know pursue “higher” licensing than they will need. Some are commercial and have never attempted to make $ from it; it’s just a bragging deal.

All general aviation pilots have to log a certain amount of air time to keep their licenses. So, I have friends who’ll just fly somewhere out of state for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The ones who can fly for work, do so; easy way to log those hours. Even better if the company is providing the plane, fuel, etc. Or, if they own their own plane and use it for business, they have an arrangement for employer to pay actual expenses or otherwise.

Unless Spanier is the eye witness–wouldn’t that tie things up in a tidy bundle?!

I agree I do not think we will find Spanier in this allegation or frankly, we would already know.

That said, as I said before, I do believe he will face indictment, and should.

Unprofessional of me indeed, but every time I see him speak I want to thwack him with the washboard.

I am laughing at word girls response to the quoted phrase in her comments at number two.

That is a typical statement made by someone who cannot find truth, so they choose to do the old “baffel them with BS” routine.

If that guy really believed what he wrote, I think his value system would be very low indeed.

And while Blink has to wait for him to speak, I took one look at his posture in the photo and immediately thought ego maniac. I firmly believe that our general appearance and in particular our facial expressions advertise the type of person we really are.

  12. A Texas Grandfather says:

And now we know what happened to Gram’s antique washboard. Blink has it for the purpose of threatening its use to improve behavior.LoL

Washing machines were not available to many in the 1930′s so most clothing was washed using a washboard. I have certainly done my time behind one.

I voted yes to waterboarding, and on a washboard, lol. What can I say?

Completely off topic if I may- You and I have very similar core political beliefs. If you have HBO, I strongly encourage to watch The Newsroom. It is the most brilliant writing on television of the political genre of recent memory. I was a fan of the west wing, if only because I think Aaron Sorkin is a brilliant writer, but it was too “party” for me to enjoy so i did not watch.

This is Sorkin’s non-partisan effort (as if) and at the end of the day, encompasses all views up for consideration without anyone serving tea. I love love it. And I hate the idiot box in general.

Big thumbs up from me. If that is not enough, Jane Fonda is the Leona Hemsley slash Sumner Redstone female hybrid and she is fantastic and btw, freakin gorgeous at her age. If you are a newsie, as my Daddy and I call each other, you will love this glimpse of behind the scenes “news”.

Embarrassingly, I have a mad crush on Jeff Daniels now, with respect and approval from Mr. B.

I cannot even believe he was a driver of a shaggin waggin. Who knew.

Putting links up (again?) to the 2 RadarOnline stories about the sex abuse on the plane. Reading them again, I could see a couple of different possibilities I hadn’t been thinking much about:

    1) The business relationship between the booster and the eyewitness might be basically a hush-money arrangement, however convoluted.

    2) The eyewitness could have been a minor at the time he witnessed the crime; is now a man. Just a thought.

    Snip:

“But RadarOnline com has obtained documents that financially tie the witness to the booster. Those documents show a significant and tangled relationship between the two men.”

To answer you question about HBO. We don’t have it on our satellite feed. Out in the country, most things are by satellite. We don’t have cell phone service that is reliable. My wife is the TV person. We have a dual TV receiver and she watches all the shows. My set is usually on and tuned to a news station (Fox)or a science channel,if I watch it. The West Wing was interesting when it first began, but soon lost its reality.

Jane Fonda is like her father. The older she gets, the better she gets as an actress. It is too bad that she seldom lives in the real world.

Guys who really know who we are and who we love are not challenged by female crushes on actors.

Since you bring up my new fav show, The Newsroom, I have to ask Blink, what do you make of the agent that “supplies” missing people stories to the likes of Nancy Grace? Do these people really exist and if so, does Kyron need one?

Disclosure: I have a friend and colleague who works on her staff. I have been invited on the show multiple times and have respectfully declined. I can say as an absolute fact that I would never agree to appear on her show in my current capacity and fortitude, lol. That bad format has one of the highest viewer ratings at that timeslots around. Olivia Mumm and she are strangers. Her EP and I sat next to each other at a ball game and discussed “biz”

The format is grossly simple. Google. Rss alerts of high hits in news interest with producers starting late afternoon.

Neil Diamond reveals secret of Sweet Caroline

The inspiration for the song came from a photograph of the then nine-year-old Kennedy the singer saw in a magazine while staying at a hotel in Memphis.

“It was a picture of a little girl dressed to the nines in her riding gear, next to her pony,” Diamond said. “It was such an innocent, wonderful picture, I immediately felt there was a song in there.”

Vic Surma, 61, a starting offensive tackle in college, played from 1968 to 1970 for the Nittany Lions under Paterno. One semester, he said, he lived in a spare bedroom in Sandusky’s basement. He has kept in touch with his former coach through annual golf outings to benefit The Second Mile, the charity for troubled boys that Sandusky created. It’s how Sandusky found his victims, prosecutors said.

I don’t think Arrow was taking over for cash or assets per se but rather for licensing & State systems of connections, up down & lateral. A greased State programs entree, most particularly foster care licensing, would continue to appeal imo even in absence of hard assets.

  23. A Texas Grandfather says:

Thanks for the link erose. The transfer of assets to the Texas charity was a done deal or so we thought. Could it be that investigators found some in the SM were complicit in not reporting what they knew to authorities? If so, the DA may have put a stop to any asset transfer until things are cleared.

Now, with the charges filed in Philadelphia, and probably more to follow, this may totally wipe out the remaining assets.

Pepper Hamilton to Acquire Louis Freeh’s Firms

Pepper’s acquisition of Freeh’s firm is among the first instances of a law firm acquiring one of these groups outright.

Pepper Hamilton, with 500 lawyers, is an old-line Philadelphia firm, founded in 1890. Though it has a broad-based practice, the firm is perhaps best known for its representation of large pharmaceutical and medical device companies like Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline and Medtronic.

His original ties to Pepper are through Joseph V. Del Raso, a corporate partner at the firm. The two, who are close friends, serve together on the board of the National Italian American Foundation.

@erose. Sporkin was a hero in my law school to my securities classes teachers for his righteous leadership, not merely great legal competence (mid 80s). The Eliot Richardson type who’d oppose superiors & fall on his sword for the public good. maybe money changes though.

what has deregulation’s impact on licensed professions come to that law firm’s can merge with lobbyist businesses as business entities? The problem I see is this dereg attitude has filtered up to the Supremes where some are not as committed to precedent & pure legal principle as other values.

  33. Rose says:

my exception to the report is this internal investigation should not have contained analysis or

the truth of the matter. Should’ve just laid out the “facts” they did find and then listed what more was needed.
And left the “more” to the BOT and the Courts.

  34. mike says:

I see someone mentioned the name of Jack Kemp. I thought he had died a while ago. In any event, here is a real stretch. I recall reading a magazine article about him way back in the early 1970s when I was still interested in politics. I believe the article was in The Atlantic Monthly. I vaguely recall that the gist of the article was that Jack Kemp who many considered to be conservative presidential timber would not run for president because he was a homosexual or ran in a circle of homosexual friends. I don’t think that at the article mentioned anything about pedophilia. Homosexuality was very hush hush in those days. I only bring this up because there has been some chat here about the connection, if any, between homosexuality and pedophilia. Maybe there is a “pack” of closet homosexuals who are also pedophiles. They might fit the mold of being rich conservative types who are closeted. They may gravitate toward certain other types like themselves who can also be trusted more or less to keep their mouths shut and help them obtain victims.

I had not heard about Jack Kemp for years. I will see if there is some sort of archieve where I can find that article. I am guessing it was in 1972 or 73. Now that’s a long time ago.

  38. erose says:

Here in lies a HUGE part of the problem.

This said by Father Benedict Groeschel, who is the director of the Office for Spiritual Development for the Catholic Archdiocese of New York:

People have this picture in their minds of a person planning to – a psychopath. But that’s not the case. Suppose you have a man having a nervous breakdown, and a youngster comes after him. A lot of the cases, the youngster – 14, 16, 18 – is the seducer … It’s not so hard to see – a kid looking for a father and didn’t have his own – and they won’t be planning to get into heavy-duty sex, but almost romantic, embracing, kissing, perhaps sleeping but not having intercourse or anything like that.

It’s an understandable thing … there are the relatively rare cases where a priest is involved in a homosexual way with a minor. I think the statistic I read recently in a secular psychology review was about 2%. Would that be true of other clergy? Would it be true of doctors, lawyers, coaches?

Here’s this poor guy – [Penn State football coach Jerry] Sandusky – it went on for years. Interesting: Why didn’t anyone say anything? Apparently, a number of kids knew about it and didn’t break the ice. Well, you know, until recent years, people did not register in their minds that it was a crime. It was a moral failure, scandalous; but they didn’t think of it in terms of legal things.

Hard to say whether he let slip what he really believes, or if as he says, can’t properly express himself, but either way, how does he have the job of director of the Office of Spiritual Development? If you ask me, anyone calling Sandusky a “poor guy” is seriously misguided, no matter the level of forgiveness or compassion.

NEW YORK — A New York priest says he “deeply regrets” if he hurt anyone by his comments that priests accused of child sex abuse are often seduced by their accusers and that a first-time offender should not go to jail.

“I did not intend to blame the victim. A priest (or anyone else) who abuses a minor is always wrong and is always responsible,” Groeschel said in his post on the website. “My mind and my way of expressing myself are not as clear as they used to be. I have spent my life trying to help others the best that I could. I deeply regret any harm I have caused to anyone.”

I guess we knew this, but it’s almost official now.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky has been recommended for designation as a sexually violent predator, a legal status that would require lifetime registration with authorities, according to a person who has read an assessment board’s report to a judge in the case.

The recommendation from the Sexual Offenders Assessment Board was disclosed to The Associated Press on Thursday by the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the report’s confidential nature.

@erose. finally read the Freeh firm acquisition (not merger imo) url you posted, some observations:
    http://abovethelaw.com/2012/08/law-firm-merger-mania-pepper-hamilton-merges-with-freeh-group/#more-187228
–2 pieces of Freeh firm, Investigations & Law practice (guess Freeh firm lobbyists survive as a business entity
–the “employees” transferred from Investigations & Law Practice total 25 — must include support functions (paras & secretaries/AA). Let’s say of the 25 there were hypothetically 15 professionals divided between investigations & law.
With their other cases, how much attention could that professional employee base possibly give the Penn State matter? Imo it was unprofessional to take a jib of that magnitude with so few employee resources. I bet a lot of contract temps were hired on the PS job. Wtf was in the BOT’s mind in hiring a peanut firm rather than a big firm with resources? My guess:
—the acquired Freeh firm law practice group became “white collar criminal defense” in the Pepper firm.
imo that white collar criminal defense specialty is exactly what Freeh’s former peanut sized law firm
(say of 15 professionals likely merged from investigations & law, maybe 8 were attorneys, with other caseloads) was hired for by the BOT. Imo, Whatever Exec group on the BOT who
hired Freeh’s white collar defense attorneys did so for that very purpose. The question is why those Exec BOT members responsible gor contract with Freeh firm felt they needed white collar investigation & defense

I will vote for Rose to be correct regarding the cronyism opportunity circuit.

I would not like to see Louis Freeh nominated for a spot on the Supreme Court. He is, in my opinion, a guy that comes in to clean up a mess so that few have to pay the price for their misdeeds.

@erose. the Diocese released a statement that subsequent to a severe closed head injury and due to failing health, this 82 yo was living in a care setting and in effect is senile or worse. attached was his own letter of apology for those words (see on diocese website)

  45. Rose says:

PS due to his ill health and inability to self care,
he’d previously been relieved of duties

about the new york “priest.” Obviously a screwball and a dottering old fool. i think you get that way by living in a monistary (sort of like going stir crazy in prison). I guess he was a friar and not a priest. This is the type of twisted rationalizing a lot of the pedo priests used to justify their acts with the victims.

Opus Dei has been mentioned. Speaking of screwballs, that is like the all star team of screwballs. Remember Hansen (forgot his first name), the FBI agent turned spy. And how about that guy named Irvin (forgot his first name), the govt. scientist at Ft. Dietrick, MD who was implicated in the anthrax mail attacks and then killed himself.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a religious component with uncle Jerry’s charity, TSM, which was commonly used to convince the kids that what was being done to them was okay and in keeping with some sort of duty to god. Ya know it wouldn’t hurt to look into who were the chaplains (if any) affiliated with TSM. Religion seems to be a perfect cover for pedos. Sports, coaches and scouts also seem to present good opportunities for pedos as well, as we well know..

  47. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Mike

There are monistaries where the friar/priests are not allowed to talk to one another except by hand signs. Try that for a few years. It would make most people a little daft.

  48. Word Girl says:

Mike, as I see it, pedophiles are everywhere and we will see them in science clubs, art class, karate dojo, swim meets, even in the library! and there is no end to the damage they do.

When teaching stranger-danger to children, it is very important to teach that not everything is what it seems. An Early Detection System could save their lives.

  49. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Word Girl

Your list about pedophiles is good. However, we may as well include every place that children gather in a group.

I am reminded of the story I read by the father who thought another father was being overbearing at a public park where children were attending a soccer game. It turned out that Mr. Overbearing was on the look out for pedaphiles with video and photo equipment. After a conversation, the new to the location father was able to observe for himself three such people and together they chased the perverts away.

What would be your greatest concern in teaching children about possible danger in an environment where they normally gather?

    I’m with defense’ legal reasoning.
Personally, I think Baldwin screwed them
both big time. Never should’ve testified to a 10 year old fact pattern without
written materials (emails ftom the U) to refresh memories
    and probably not even then.

Just spent a week on campus at U Mich. I find it hard to believe
football under Paterno at PS was worse. A solid week of
thousands of undergrad yellow shirts, most drunk nightly from 9 pm – 3 am.
Personally observed Girls puking in community gardens and backyard
playgrounds of community ctrs. Heck, athletic facilities comprise anentire campus.
The money poured into that complex from the athletes’ academic ctr to the stadium
was incredible. And athletics brings $ to rest of campus.
JP was just trying to fund resources for PS comparable to rest of Big 10.
PS did nothing unusual (except they had the most provincial & poorly led Board imo).

As I watched UM’s Pres at the Convocation, I thought, would this U Pres have noticed much less
given a f about a retired former football athletic asst on any matter? Heck no! Spanier’s “he was just a former
    employee I didn’t know” rang true, U Pres management-wise.
