The Devil They Knew: Jessica Ridgeway Accused Murderer Austin Reed Sigg Profile Emerges

Westminster, CO- Standley Lake High School dropout Austin Sigg told his Mother he kidnapped 10 year old Witt Elementary student Jessica Ridgeway the morning of Friday October 5.
Mindy Ashbaugh Sigg , divorced from Robert J Sigg, the father of the couple’s two teenage boys, called Westminster Police Tuesday evening to alert them of her son’s admission.
Upon arrival, Austin Reed Sigg confessed the unthinkable. Sigg told investigators he strangled the little girl after he snatched her into his Jeep, hogtied her in the back, and they could find the remainder of the child in a cooler located in a crawl space at his 102nd St address. By 7:45PM Sigg was arrested for the kidnapping and murder of Jessica Ridgeway, and the attempted kidnapping and attempted murder of a female jogger on May 28, 2012 a few hundred yards from his home.
The self-professed death mobile was impounded and inventoried at an undisclosed evidence bay for processing .
Although Sigg did not graduate High School, he earned his GED and was attending the alternative school Warren Tech last March where he won second place in the forensics category- a CSI award. Sigg was currently enrolled at Arapohoe Community College with the intention of fulfilling the prerequisite courses necessary to join the mortuary science program- which requires a background check for acceptance.
The irony of an award matching the letters on the backs of jackets combing through the Sigg home was not lost on the seasoned crime scene technicians fastidiously processing this newest crime scene in the case.
It was also not lost on any of the law enforcement personnel present that field testing did not detect results synonymous with an environment used to dismember a human. They are confident that had to have occurred somewhere else.
They are missing a crime scene. Are they missing an accomplice?

Austin Reed Sigg was born to Mindy and Rob Sigg on January 17, 1995 . This was the second marriage for Rob and two small children later, the couple would divorce before Austin’s fifth birthday.
Mindy Sigg, a tech for a Lasik provider in Westminster, had full custody of the boys while Rob continued his long and varied criminal history consisting of DUI’s, drugs, and finally landing in Federal prison for an identity theft and mortgage scheme in 2006. Robert is the president of Performance One Media- the company is named in current civil litigations, and he owns a go Kart racing team.
Extended family members speaking on the condition of anonymity to BOC, confirmed this morning that the family had serious concerns about Austin’s “direction” during his junior year at Standley Lake.
…” We heard that he was in counseling over issues related to the family breaking up, you know, Rob was in and out of prison sort of thing, but while Mindy kept telling everyone she was told this kind of phase of wearing black, being holed up in his room playing video games, and charging porn movies on her accounts was normal for a teenage boy, we had discussed someone taking the lead and mentioning we thought Austin did not seem “normal” for as long as I could remember. But then he had a girlfriend for a while, and he seemed to sort of snap out of it. The last thing I remember was that they had gone to some formal and the next thing we knew he was pulled out of school and in intensive therapy for a pornographic addiction, so I don’t know if that is what broke the kids up, or what. Mindy had it rough with the two boys on her own. She put herself through that school in Denver on her own dime while Rob got locked up and about the same time. I think the kids were probably very much on their own and by the time Austin started having really big issues, it may have been too late obviously.
We still don’t know how he comes out of prison and paid of over $140K in fines while Mindy was forced to file bankruptcy this summer we found out later. I tried to look up Rob’s stuff on the internet, but a bunch of the files from his criminal case are still sealed.”
A review of Ms. Sigg’s bankruptcy petition may indicate that Austin either had or was facing some juvenile charges. It was filed 2 days after the Memorial Day attack on a young female jogger Sigg is also charged with, and a few weeks prior to an elaborate luxury vacation the family took to the US Virgin Islands. As reported by kdvr, Investigators with WPD and the FBI may not have been aware of their suspect’s international travels and are now in contact with authorities abroad.
Emerging Profile
As the news of Austin Sigg’s arrest flashed through the town of 18,000 and then the Nation, those that knew him or claimed to know him well, hit the web. Below are the highlights that portray a picture of an adolescent exhibiting signs worthy of
Sarah Moravec, a Standley Lake High School senior, says she picked on 17-year-old Austin Sigg nearly every day for having a high-pitched voice.
“I picked on him a lot,” Moravec said. “Austin was just different. So, why not pick on the different people? But then again, I was bullied whenever I was younger.”
The Standley Lake senior said Sigg often wore dark clothing and hung out at the back of the cafeteria with others.
“We didn’t even think he was somebody our age,” Moravec said. “We thought it was some 45-year-old pervert or something like that.”
“Danni”- a girl who dated Sigg twice and spent time with him at Warehouse 180, a meeting place for Christian teens.
“He was sweet. I knew he had like a weapons collections, swords and knives, but it was just like his man cave.
Christy Mueller- walking on the trail around Standley Lake recently, encountered Sigg and a few friends. She felt immediately as if he was up to something.
…” I just felt as soon as I saw him he was up to something, if he (her dog) was not here I am afraid of what might have happened…”
Meaghan Barker was Sigg’s lab partner at Warren Tech-

Someone claiming to love Austin Sigg and a fellow victim of bullying that Sigg helped, started a face book page in support of Sigg late yesterday and said that he may have confessed because he knew whoever else was involved could not be caught. He went on to ask forgiveness for his friend and called the act satanic.
Although an avid gamer under the tag dohastvath, there are no current online stats exist past June 2010. Sigg’s voice can be heard here, he plays Yoshi in this YouTube series with two other boys where he repeatedly expresses he is not gay and references a disturbing knowledge of bondage and graphic sexual devices and situations. The series was uploaded in 2009.
It is clear that Austin Sigg has a slight speech impediment, and indeed, an efeminite vocal tone at 14.
Yesterday during the press conference Jefferson County Prosecutor Scott Storey announced that further charges were possible in connection with Ridgeway’s murder and the investigation is ongoing.
The autopsy of Jessica Ridgeway’s remains located on October 10th are complete pending forensic and toxicology testing, however, her cause of death , if known, has not been released publicly.
This morning, it was decided that Sigg will be charged as an adult. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 30th. Austin Sigg’s DNA was recovered from Jessica Ridgeway’s backpack.

Yes Blink, no one wanted to say anything about the torture. I knew his story was bs when it was reported. This guy is one terrible piece of work. I too believe that he lost his soul and therefore he is marked for extinction by the angels of death.
Since he will be tried as an adult, he will be elgible for the death penalty.
The next thing is until it is proven not to have happened, I believe that he did not do this alone. There was someone else involved.
I want to shield myself from hearing the horror of what she might have endured. To not know. It’s almost unbearable that a child suffered so much at the hands of this killer.
And now her family has to carry that pain. Is there no end to his darkness?
But it’s important that we know what happened. Justice has to be served for Jessica.

Austin Sigg will never face the death penalty. Regardless of what court he ends up in, and honestly, due to recent supreme court rulings, because he was a minor when he committed this crime allegedly, he is never eligible for capital punishment or a mandatory life sentence.
This kid did not act alone, we agree.

Where might one meet a psychopathic tudor? Group therapy, self-help groups. Particularly if the addiction is a significant factor in the following actions. I have it on good authority that the best place to meet your next dope dealer is an NA meeting. Did he attend group? Did he have a sponsor?

To clarify, I am not stating that NA is responsible for any wrong doings, nor am I pointing to NA. I am referring to the porn addiction group. The comment re NA comes from several friends, acquaintances and family members who ran into people still heavily involved in drug use (some dealers). If someone looking for a protege, they’d have to have a pool of candidates with certain pre-reqs or qualifications. What better place?

Poor baby girl. LE is stating that AS worked alone. If that is true, I am even more horrified as to what he did to work up to this crime and what his family may have known prior. While he may have accomplished the kidnapping, rape, and murder alone, I have a hard time believing he didn’t have some assistance in the dismemberment, at least in terms of having a location to conduct such a process. No idea how the process was done or is done but I imagine it requires a secret and reliably private location. (Not something I imagine him doing in the SUV or his bedroom. But who the hell knows…)
In terms of coaching, Blink, I am in complete agreement with you. I am going to put my money on an on-line mentor–someone or several someones in a creepy group of some kind. I am guessing AS’s computer life is going to lead us into some of the darker areas of Hell.
Note, there was that woman who saw him with his “friends” in the park and was creeped out by him and grateful to have her dog with her. Were these friends also a part of some dark misfit group trying to gain a sense of power via darkness, solidarity, anger, etc? Maybe Austin just took it to a higher level…? Whatever the case, he does have the “apprentice” vibe.
I think the ex bf of the mother is worth looking at regarding help in this crime.
Also remember the interview with the high school girl regarding the encounter with Sigg and and two others in the park. She stated that if she did not have her dog along, she would have been afraid. Could she supply the names of the other two and let LE check them out? Perhaps, she may know them or she may not. Middle and high school students today do not often state their last name unless requested by an adult.
I hope that someone has explained to the high school student that encountered Austin and his buddys in the park that the dog, unless trained, is not likely to provide protection other than to bark. An aggressive human can make most untrained dogs whine and run away.
Sigg is facing four counts of first degree murder in addition to 13 other counts.
The first count of first degree murder is for “causing the death of another person after deliberation and with the intent to cause her death.”
The second, third and fourth counts of first degree murder are for:
“acting either alone or with one or more persons, committing or attempting to commit arson, robbery, burglary, kidnapping, sexual assault in the first or second degree, or a class 3 felony for sexual assault on a child…and, in the course of the crime that he or she is committing, the death of a person is caused…”
Am I understanding correctly that those additional counts of first degree murder are for robbery, kidnapping and sexual assault that resulted in her murder?

As far as AS being a loner, I think those comments are coming from some of his prior high school peers- likely people he didn’t regularly associate with. I would bet he has a whole different circle of ‘friends’ that most regular folk know nothing about. I would like to assume that LE has thoroughly canvassed the mining tunnels, bc I could think that might be an ideal isolated location to take a poor child and victimize her in silence and privacy.

Another thought, which goes against my grain, could it be a girl? They said he had younger girl friends who he played flag football or something with.
Yes, mosaic, that is how the counts add up–in the commission of those crimes, he also committed a murder. Those are very real, provable counts and I hope no one decides to discount them.
That’s why it’s important to understand that a criminal doesn’t necessarily rob, rape, burgal, assault and walk away. A criminal doesn’t know what all he’s going to do, most of the time.
El, thanks for the extra info on evidence found on a torso. As I mentioned the pulmonary issues, I didn’t even think about the amount of blood loss and its weight (which Blink pointed out.)
I suspected the strangulation may not have been with bare hands and I suppose we’ll see what comes out in court.
I guess I’ll go on record in my belief that Austin Sigg worked alone to commit this heinous crime. His influences, beginning with his father and Sigg’s plethora of violent pornography where people are treated as sexual objects (both male and female) planted seeds of destruction in him from an early age.
Mom’s BF and his peer group or peripheral peer group may have also been influences.
But, yeah, this whole, convoluted sexually motivated, smoldering rage killing–I think that was all Austin. (Please note his smirking at his classmate’s report on Ted Bundy.)

Eloise — the video you posted with the map of the attack on the jogger was very informative.
What’s especially interesting on the map is that the attacker was seen escaping down a path that runs behind the homes on Austin Sigg’s street. He was seen running in the direction of his home.
The burning question in my mind: What was his plan in carrying the woman once he was able to subdue her?
The attack fell apart, and he escaped on foot running toward his home. Was there no getaway vehicle? Was he going to simply drag her to a remote area of the park and assault her there? Or was his car parked somewhere else and when escaping, he decided it was unsafe to escape to his vehicle?
So many questions. The sad thing is after this attack, he got smarter. He downsized his prey, and he attacked on, or close, to a road.
I tend to think he acted alone. I really have zero basis for this thought, other than the fact that perhaps it is difficult enough for me to believe that ONE person could actually do this to a human being, let alone the thought that someone else within that same geo area could participate. This crime was so brutal. How do people become so evil? I can NOT imagine. Maybe he is a first? If not, who in the world was he hanging with? I wonder how long the mom really knew or at least suspected his involvement? I pray for Jessica’s family. I really have to say, however, unless your head is in the sand…why do parents keep letting their young children walk to school and allow them too much freedom? This is something mom will have to think about forever. It is heartbreaking. Prayers for her family.

In reference to him having an accomplice, I have to respectfully disagree. The one victim (Jogger) that escaped would have mentioned 2 suspects and there would’nt have been a need for a chemical soaked rag. If two were responsible for planning and fantasizing about this imo there would be no way one or the other would offend seperately. Especially a 17 year old with no experience. Its safe to say that he has no experience since a female jogger was able to fight him off. DNA would have been found already (remember that dna has already linked the 2 cases so it has been expedited and a 2nd party would have already been mentioned), its highly unlikely that if there was a pair, that only one would participate in the sexual assualt. It would seem that both would make a pact to participate to protect their vested interests or at the very least, the more agressive of the two would demand it to hold sway over the other. Also, I would assume (dont nail me for that) that a close personal bond would have to be established between two people, no matter how cruel or twisted, before they would murder together. Sigg has no partner in crime or otherwise. It doesnt make sense to me that there would be an almost non existent relationship that at this point we/authorities/the world would be aware of, where he just got lucky and the first person he asked about murder would have just happened to say “yes, call me in 5 months when your ready…” We would have heard of this person already. Final Thoughts: He’s above average intelligence. Not genius level. He turned himself in and said he took no joy in the murder after he had time to think about how its going to pan out. Reality sunk in and he took easy street. Everything he did and said re: turning himself in is to help himself. If they didnt swab his mouth, we wont wouldnt be cursing his name.

It does not mean another individual was not coaching, or otherwise vicariously or physically involved. 37% of sexual sadists involve another.
2. We do not have a secondary crime scene, so we do not have access to full DNA to compare to known samples. Additionally, the DA has only announced that Siggs DNA was found on the backpack, but is now facing sexual assault charges. I am not going to go into the macabre details of how that might relate to a well known sexual sadist issue, most especially if there is no DNA to tie to the assault.
3. How do you know what relationships he has? I can ( but will not as I have been asked not to) list at least 4 individuals he was rarely NOT in the company of.
5. That said, he may have acted alone and may be suffering from personality disorders we are not aware of.
I am highly resistant to write this kid off as a lone offender without definitive proof.

Forgot to mention that the reason I think that everyone thinks he seems so experienced is because of society. Stay with me here: There are any number of websites out there where you can watch someone being murdered, see the after math of car accidents, rape, suicide… whatever. You name it and there is a real video of it. This is training for anyone who can stomach looking at it. Its desensitizing and makes people cold. I am not saying that this made him the way he is, a despicable piece of garbage murderer, but I am saying that can do anything when I have an instructable and a little motivation. You’re welcome Mosaic. I haven’t read the book but the acting in the movie was outstanding. Every actor did a brilliant job.
Did Austin kidnap little Jessica by himself? That is probable since he could subdue her easily.
The next thing is where did he take her? That is still an unknown to us. LE may have the information or may not. This is where I believe another person came into the picture. The unknown crime scene.
People who do ugly things as part of a group often involve others in their activities. This then becomes the group mentality and this often removes a lot of restraint in their behavior.
We have no knowledge of DNA found with the body. Based on the charges, it is very probable that Austin’s was found. Does that mean no other DNA was found? Not necessarily. It could simply mean that additional DNA is not yet identified.

I just discovered a story of a six year old exhibiting antisocial personality, frankly expressing her desire to kill her brother, parents, and animals. She did not bond or attach as a baby and was sexually abused by her father from one year old for about six months.

Does this prove some of these kids can be helped? I think so but our psyche community, parenting/family breakdown, and systems (education, criminal justice, and social services) are not what they could be.
Not that I believe Reactive Attachment Disorder is what Austin has, only that I believe some of these disorders can be treated if done so early enough.

Blink, what I am trying to say is this: Everyone wants to go somewhere on vacation. See the attractions. All you need is a map to plan out your trip. Do a little research and organization and your trip will be a success versus no planning and you wont see anything. He’s obviously been watching some disturbing things, practicing his CSI skills which usually includes graphic case research, details and photographs. Interest in mortuary sciences.. I’m not saying it totally prepared him hence the reason he failed on his 1st attempt but I am saying that he was inspired /De-sensitized enough to take his first leap down the stair way to hell and omit a couple of flights on his way down. Other killers had small animals and other kids to practice their brutality on, he had the internet and lots of free time. With all due respect, the profile for this one needs to be tossed out the window. The rules/guidelines need to be revised. Police should have been looking towards a younger offender when they realized that the jogger was actually able to fight off the attacker. In the last 10 years, the guidelines used to develop profiles, have shown to be way off base. We’ve seen an explosion of black serial killers who have been operating long before we knew they existed. How many profiles have/had/did identify the offender as white? You got me on number 3 on my post. I don’t know any of his relationships. I am only, like everyone else, speculating. BOC seems to have the most accurate and up to date information on this case and thought I would have heard something about it if it was even a thought on LE’s radar. I would have also thought DNA would have been expedited and if there was multiple offender’s DNA that they would have immediately held a new conference about it or put the screws to Mr. Loose lips since hes feeling so talkative.

Shawn- respectfully, you are going to need to cite your support if this is a conversation you feel you are perched to have based on empirical data or case files outside of your personal observation and opinion. I don’t mind observation and opinion on your behalf, but you still need to provide reference if you are stating as fact in this “framework.”
It is simply too important to understanding this crime, and it’s suspect, for reasons in a loose way, I partially agree with you about.
I am on record, this kid is first of his kind. That is the motivation for my extreme concern, and frankly, academic curiosity.
The escalation process and exposure of a sexual sadist would have to be an adaptation of traditional data to incorporate the “web” and access factor. It also has to include interventive measures and relevant data previously unavailable ( 100% of juvie records were unavailable to confirm in the FBI study) yes.
But the rareity of the profile commands known case comparisons that are static. And we know that those are.

Blink have all the body parts been found? If the crimes were streamed via web cam, could the location be determined by going through the Internet service provider?
They have not, and I doubt he would stream it, and it is my speculation that he taped it, but it should be LE’s as well, there is plenty of merit to the theory.

Amy’s Sister — the video you posted is fascinating. It’s truly remarkable that the damage this little girl’s psyche suffered as an infant was able to be reversed. I hope her little brother recovered from all the trauma she put him through.
How brave of her to post the taped interviews from her childhood therapy sessions.
And how easily it is to mistake this little girl for being “evil.” I admit that if I adopted a six-year-old child and she was sneaking my kitchen knives and sticking pins in her little brother, I would be very afraid and I would wonder if there is any hope for someone without a conscience.
This one seems to indicate that at least with Beth Thomas, she was able to heal.

@kimberly, regarding the question of the location of the body found. I’m a Denver native of 30 plus years. I grew up in the same area as all of this has taken place in. When I heared where the body was found, it seemed so fitting if you are from that area. That place, as kids we called it Hell Road. Ask any local what goes on up there. The news said it was riddled with old mine shafts. That’s true, however they never mentioned the ghost stories and Satanic stuff that has happened up there. In that same area is leftover old strucktures where teenages go at night to get freaked out. All kinds of Satanic/Cult graffiti up there along with animal bones and dried blood. This is not an urban legend, I’ve seen it myself when I was a teen. Austin grew up in the same neighborhood (Countryside)as I did. If I, my siblings and all my friends knew about Hell Road, so did Austin and his friends. I’d bet money on it. That was not just a random drop off place.

I think the fact that local media didn’t mention it at all is more telling really. I don’t know if anyone remembers the story of Ricky Kasso and the “I love Satan” killing on LI in the 90′s, but that was from my home town. Same scenario, in that the woods in that case was a long standing location for teens/kids hanging out drinking etc. Towns don’t like to admit that their own are doing that while people look the other way and then such a tragedy occurs. I think that may be a similar thinking here.
Is that Hell Road still an active hangout location- at least up until now? What age group is typically found there- any adults?

This case has been on my mind all day. I’ve turned around in my belief that Austin Sigg acted alone. What brought me to that change wasn’t Blink asserting that he’d be a ‘first’ in that realm, but rather her comment that he didn’t roam alone. Younger kids and other sources said he loved to play a game with them. A loner doesn’t join in other reindeer games.
A Sigg posted video of his trip down Hell Road (thx Coloradoan) aka Memory Lane, but when the rubber-necking portion occurred, as he saw the media truck with their tower up, I saw the divider in the car, between the front and rear passenger windows. (ATG prolly knows the name of that.) I believe there may have been someone else in the car filming.
Ergo, someone else filming the dismembering. There is a killing field and we will find it.
I don’t know if they are still available, but I included in my piece links to him and his “cohorts” recording “banter” to SuperMario games and other videos. I listened to and uploaded pertinent content of all of them. Over 20 hours. They are 3 years old-ish. Factor in the videos of him and his squirrel experiments, pizza man with a special request, etc.
This kid does nothing that does not please someone else, or some known audience he can receive stimulation from. He is scratching at the walls on his own, or floabw, descending. I personally believe that this triggered escalation has everything to do with his attempts to change his status.
He is just no loner, and I think LE better be clear they know all the pieces to this puzzle.
