“I agree with pretty much everything that has been posted with regards to JA’s early life and lack of structure/discipline. However, there are some people that receive all the love and discipline necessary to develop into a fine individual, but still turn out “wrong”. It is my personal belief that evil exists in this world, whether we call them sociopaths (or other terms), they are what they are. No amount of love or discipline can change this. In JA’s instance I believe she could have lived at home until she was 25 and then perhaps her family would have ended up as the victims. She is a ticking time bomb and I believe that no amount of intervention can save/alter an individual such as she.”

I agree with your entire post.

Predicted and predictable of arias. Part of her appellate strategy

My gosh Jodi looks awful today
Well I just tuned in This should be interesting I hear Jodi will talk about who she is

The best thing this girl can do for herself is just sit there and cry on cue, and look drugged out. I truly believe the very sound of her voice and ability to turn her personality switch on and off will anger this jury further.

Nurmi stated that Stabby Einstein will be taking the stand..I bet they are very nervous about what she is going to spew up there. Darryl Brewer will be back as well.

It honestly makes zero difference to me what anyone has to say on her behalf..she has been convicted, proven the act was especially cruel and approved for death… I think this jury knows there is no rehabilitating this demon spawn pod person and no need to continue wasting tax payer money to watch her rot away for the next 50 years.

With any luck she will be sentenced to death and FINALLY do the right thing and waive all appeals.

I know that sounds incredibly hateful, heartless, and uncaring, but I am over her and her lies, I see absolutely no redeeming qualities in her as a person and she deserves no leniency. ….NONE. AT. ALL. EVER

  5. lyla says:

Jodi is drugged and crying as Travis’s brother Steven is speaking to the effects of his brother’s brutal murder has had on his family. It is overwhelmingly heartbreaking.

  6. Sue says:

She is so drugged today – so she doesn’t have to soberly face the siblings. Cop-out big time! Will not face the truth. She has NO redeeming qualities at all.

  7. Rose says:

Imo her attorneys rightly asked to be replaced by
death penalty qualified attorneys for this phase.
I am very concerned J Stephens has laid the ground
for overturn on review. I hearken back to a Judge in another
case who limited sib observors to one at a time. I have no intent
taking away from the sibs & their great grief to say an entire front
rowfull continuously sobbing & weeping was prejudicial. As would be (I heard
last nite on cnn) the death wound photos being projected on
large Courtroom screens overhead . That is more inflammatory
    than regular size paper prints.

  8. GraceintheHills says:

So, Arias is crying for the pain of the family that she cannot stand to look at because they remind her of her abuser?

    There are no words.

Oh yes there are, we are just too ladylike to use them.

I just watched the live stream of the victim impact statements on my desk here at work. I am crying my eyes out. Samantha and Steven did such a wonderful job. I’m sure Travis is so proud. If this jury doesn’t give her the death penalty, there is no justice in this world.

  10. Malty says:

Stephen Alexander really hit home with his statement

  11. Rose says:

I am worried an argument on appeal will be made she was visibly so drugged in this phase she was unable to effectively assist counsel.
Saw Samantha; missed Steve. I am glad they focused on the 2.
    Recap anyone?

  12. PamSpaz says:

The victim statements brought tears to my eyes. Now I am even more disgusted with Jodi than ever before. Her mitigating factors are so pathetic and her speaking after the family will just not undo anything at all. They have such class where she has none. Her age and her artwork and being a good friend and trying to live a good life DOES NOT MATTER, compared to what she has done. She certainly should get the DP.

Travi’s brothers words said it all “I don’t want to see his killer ANYmore”

I think the fact that the family would have to be present for many further hearings unless she is executed is a very compelling argument in this case. The issue however, is that you are still looking at 10 years before auto appeals, etc.

  17. PamSpaz says:

OMG court cannot proceed today. Her childhood friend did not want to be seen. Is it possible for her to back out and not testify at all? Can this be possible reason for not being able to proceed? As I understand it they have not been in contact with each other in years. Sooo maybe no longer friends and she has had a change of heart on speaking on her bahalf. Just my thoughts.

Since I was correct on the lawyers motioning to withdraw, I will take a crack at this. Interlocutory appeal on said motion. If this Judge is adjourning at this stage for any other reason we will all be watching the retrial.

I cried listening to Travis’ two siblings. They went deep into everyones soul. How dare this cold blooded Jodi think anyone, especially the jurors want her to open her lying mouth again at this time.
Shut up and go away. Sit on the stand again? Jeezo, what is she thinking? And her defense “team.” Oy, they are done with her. Body language, talk about turning a cold shoulder. They do not want to be there. Especially, Nurmi. Today, I watched a lawyer plead for a clients life. It was lame, unbelievable and almost damning. Nurmi wants her to fry. He had no passion whatsoever for his client and the other one…she wishes she was in Cancun with an umbrella drink.

  20. erose says:

Whether she means it this way, or not, isn’t her statement going to come off to the jury as a promo for her art work on ebay, to the highest bidder? Susan, I agree, when the postponement was announced I could see defense counsel mentally cancelling reservations to the tropics.

Yes, each of those ineffective lawyers are done with her. The body language is glaring. They despise Arias and the spotlight on them as two very Lousy lawyers. Lousy, stinking, lawyers. Now, they will allow thier client to park her lying fanny on the stand again?????
The jury has had a fill of her. What is she thinking? Why cannot her lawyers rein her in. If this was a long time ago in France, her head would have rolled faster than Marie Antoinette. At least Marie was a bit tearful, not Jodi.

In most jurisdictions (I think), IAs cannot be made until after the conclusion of a trial (right?). If AZ law permits them before the conclusion of a trial, I would imagine the chances of one being granted is pretty slim.

Actually future they must be made prior to the conclusion of trial. See the collaterral order doctrine.

However, in theory you are correct.

  26. Ode says:

I would not be surprised if Jodi said she wanted to be the only person to speak on her behalf and she was going to tell the jury she wanted to die. The court and her attorneys do not know what to do with her. She has put the court in check mate. No matter what they do the system looses. Travis could not get rid of her. Her attorneys can not get rid of her. Judge Stephens can not get rid of her. She is like some outer space chewing gum that you can never get off of you shoe.

May 16, 2013 at 3:25 pm and Blink…..lady like? When will you know for sure. Kidding…that was a great chuckle. Thank you ladies.

I thought I’d throw in my wooden nickle’s worth and say….the tears seemed genuine…but I felt like she was one with the court observers, feeling the loss for the Alexander family…. “Oh my….how tragic for them. It’s just not fair. This world is so cruel. How could someone do this to them or that beautiful young man, Travis’.

I still don’t believe she gets or accepts that it’s HER that did this to them. When Steven, a grimaced expression on his face, stated he does NOT want to see Travis’ murderer anymore, I don’t believe Jodi even thought for a second OR rebutted, it was HER, he was referring, too. She definitely queued body language and empathy facial expressions from the family, jurors (if they showed emotion) and court room observers. No way a zebra changes its stripes, let alone over night.

I doubt the jury is buying into it either….but there could be 1.

Steven…..holy cow. It took great courage to reveal his fears, nightmares and state of being since Travis’ murder. For a man, that is BIG. I don’t know how to word that any better…but I do not mean it to be offensive wrt how men express themselves or their feelings. Most men in my life took pride in keeping it together. My dad, my uncles….came from an extremely abusive home. Crying was not an option. Falling apart was not an option. It was not how a real man deals with pain.

Thank God times are changing and men AND women are accepting that human emotion is a natural human experience.

God bless the Alexanders. My heart goes out to them and Jodi’s momma.

That is Travis’ writing. It was the beginnings of his book, which he was going to entitle ‘Raising You’. Samantha also highlighted this in her impact statement, telling Travis how amazing it was. She also mentioned the title, too. Pretty good start, don’t ya think? xo

Yes, Rose, those are Travis’ words. Here was a young boy who was beaten by his mother, and grew up and out of that abuse only to be brutally murdered by a woman. The part about the blows to his back hurting less still brings tears to my eyes. God rest his soul.

I’m thinking that JA is “pulling a crazy” by ignoring her attorney’s wishes. She has nothing to lose now. She is inches away from receiving the DP. She can’t top what the siblings did today. She is doomed unless she gets her attorneys to feel compelled to leave the case.

Does she not want her witnesses to speak for her when it was their turn to testify for her? I am confused about this. Perhaps she threw a monkey wrench in there to get the trial delayed yet again so she can pull another ‘crazy’. I hope against hope that her attorneys can’t appeal the judge’s decision. I don’t trust her attorneys either. I don’t want to say too much about it now, but if Jodi gets the DP on top of all this, then they’ll be going down in history too for all the wrong reasons. I hope I’m just being paranoid.

I didn’t get to watch the family impact statements until tonight, and I haven’t watched every minute of them, as yet. I noticed something that I could hardly believe I was seeing. During Steven’s statement, just before he describes where he now has to go if he wants to visit Travis, I saw Arias smiling behind her hand! You could tell by her eyes and I could also see the corners of her mouth turned up in a big grin! What an evil POS.

  48. Inda says:

Steven and Samantha both hit it out the park today. They laid it out there for everyone to see just how much has been lost. You could almost see the blood draining from Arias face as they talked. As they described Travis’s character and attributes they were listing the reasons Arias killed him. She hated him for being loved by so many who didn’t love or accept her. And then he didn’t love her either. The phrase consumed by rage takes on new meaning.

Does anyone see how Jodi (or anyone else) can talk herself out of a death penalty? Postponing the trial till Monday isn’t going to buy her enough time to do any good. After this afternoon’s fiasco I wish the defense would just give everyone a break and stop talking.

Is it true the defendant has to pay for appeals if they receive life without the opportunity for parole? If so maybe we should be hoping for that to save the taxpayers some money.

On a less serious note, thank you Blink for providing this place to share my thoughts with you and the rest of the Blinksters. I’ve learned a lot, saved my sanity and had at least a laugh or two.

  49. JR says:

So much to think about with so many things going on at the close of this trial:

-I loved Travis’s brother and sister. So raw and real.its clear they lost the ‘rock’ of their already traumatic past. i think one good thing that could very well come from this, is that Travis Alexander has become a name…and he should become known for more than his murder. His family should assemble all of his writings and with the example someone posted here earlier – Travis can live on in the way he wanted to and obviously had inspirational ability to. it sounds like Travis was a natural born life force that new how to find gold in anything and anyone. his writings should be published and his voice will live on..

    - I think its great they didn’t give Jodi one mention in their impact statement. severing her public ties to him and ownership of his image completely. they made her nothing relevant to his real life other than being the murderer who savigely ended it.

i said from the beginning how awful it must be for his loved ones to have not only have this idiot decide to take his life, but take it over like his spokesperson telling the world who he was and then rewriting his history with blatant lies. I believe that more than the murder, its the lies that makes this jury and everyone else so willing to go for the death penalty on this one.its what JM said “she didn’t just use a gun a knife, noooo she had to kill him again with her lies.” not even leave him rest with his dignity.

i usually feel the death penalty should reserved for serial killers or child killers or those who kill for sport and would do it again if they could. Betty Broderick was also a scorned woman diagnosed borderline and killed 2 people and still, she’s not someone I feel deserved the death penalty. i wasn’t even convinced casey anthony deserved the death penalty (until i heard how low she will go in Baez’s opening statements). what makes arias different? its that sociopath thing..the blatant constant lying and cunning remarkability that makes these people the biggest danger walking among us.they look good they sound good and they will always find another way to hide the evil demon under their skin. the majority of people are so willing to see jodi get death because its one of the rare times we’ve seen the undeniable truth of what a sociopath is capable of. we didn’t just see the inside edition interview to say “hmmmmmm i don’t know..maybe she IS telling the truth”. no, flores and martinez did a great job of showing us all the ability of these people to appear moral, articulate and truthful enough to have a quick answer for everything — but the crime scene photos, the science, the conflicting testimony of witnesses…all of it showed the pure evil they are capable of when they think nobody is watching and their ability to look us straight in the eye then say anything and act like they’re anything but.

We’ve seen photographic proof of what evil lurks behind a smooth talking angelic facade – i think its simply chilling to us when we actually see what these people are and rarely are they so fully exposed.

  50. Löni says:

As i lost my uncle who was brutally killed ( overkilled because he fought so hard against the Killer to stay alive) that i can really feel the hole pain the Family of Travis is and had to go through.
