Missing Marine Wife Erin Corwin Breaking News: Husband Was NOT On Duty The Day She Disappeared

Posted by BOC Staff | Chris Lee,Erin Corwin,Jonathan Corwin,Missing and Endangered,Nichole Lee | Monday 21 July 2014 9:34 pm

Erin Corwin, 19 and approximately 2 weeks pregnant  when she disappeared on Saturday June 28th was last seen at about 10AM on Valle Vista and Ranch Rds, according to Police witness Michael Beasely and his sister Jeanette.   Corwin is the wife of Corporal Jonathan Corwin, stationed at The Marine Corp Air Ground Combat Center ( MCAGCC).

Erin Corwin credit Facebook

Beasely describes a young man in a compact red car having a brief conversation with her, and watched her get into the red vehicle after locking the passenger side door.  While Beasely said he could not state for certain it was Erin Corwin, it was definitely her car that was located about 100 yards into the desert from where he saw it on June 30th.   Beasely’s sister Jessica also recalled seeing the car  at some point that morning, but did not see the exchange with the man in the red car.  The Beasely’s gave this information to police at the scene while interviewing the water services worker who called detectives.

“When I came back a half hour later, just the (blue) car was sitting there. Next thing, I hear the weekend goes by and Monday morning the sheriffs are there looking for this girl because she ain’t home yet,” Beasley recalled.

Four search warrants have been released in the investigation into the disappearance of Erin Corwin, one of which has prompted and internet firestorm of friends and family members describing what they allege are direct accounts from Cpl. Corwin.   As the affidavits to the subpoenas for exigent warrants have been sealed, it is not clear why one of those search warrants was for the dark colored Jeep of fellow Marine Christopher Brandon Lee.   According to several online sleuthing sites claiming to have members that are in touch with John Corwin and in some cases investigators, Lee and Erin had a previous relationship that ended last Spring, but following her disappearance Cpl. Corwin located items  he says, on June 29th ,  prompted him to believe that the child Erin was carrying may not have been his.

In an exclusive development in the case,  through a source that agreed to speak to BOC on the strict condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak officially on the investigation, a review of Cpl. Corwin’s duty roster shows that he was NOT on duty Saturday June 28th ;  the morning after  he attended  a neighbor’s outside gathering that Erin Corwin left early.

Corwin told investigators that his wife had made plans to scope out sites to photograph during her Mother’s scheduled visit a few days later.  It is not clear why Corwin said that he last saw Erin at 7 AM but was not able to offer a description of her clothing or why it appeared  (Beasely) that she just headed toward the park at 10 AM.  Corwin told investigators he thought he had to wait 24 hours to report a missing person and reported her missing to a San Bernardino county deputy Sunday morning.  In an earlier interview,  Erin’s mother Loretta ( Lore) Heavilin said her son in law told her he did not report her missing because he thought she was staying overnight at the White Rock Ranch and Rehab – where Erin had adopted her horse Cassy.  Both Nichole and Christopher Lee adopted horses at White Rock as well.

Later that evening,  when Corwin’s commanding officer went to the couple’s home to check on Jon,  fellow members of his 3/11 India Battery  were called to Corwin’s residence after he was found inebriated and apparently destructive to the property to assist in it’s clean up and repair .   He was placed on PTAD orders  the same day.

Investigators will not confirm nor deny if they have developed a suspect or suspects in Erin’s disappearance,  but they have stated that neither Christopher Lee nor his wife Nichole are considered suspects or persons of interest in Corwin’s disappearance.

“Just because their names are in a search warrant or you received their names from some other source rather than the sheriff’s department; they’re not listed as suspects or persons of interest so we wouldn’t have a comment.”

In what may be an unrelated event,  Lee was charged on July 4th with possession of a destructive device.   Lee secured a $25,000 bond  according to police records and is scheduled to be arraigned in September.   Lee was arrested during the execution of a search warrant at the White Rock Horse Rescue.

Chris Lee credit Facebook

Late this afternoon, within an hour of the San Bernardino County press release,  a portion of the previously sealed affidvavits surrounding warrants were released.  Although SBSD  has previously stated that Christopher Lee was not considered a suspect, he is absolutely implicated in the documents according to The Desert Sun.

“It is highly likely that Erin could have been harmed by an unknown firearm,” detectives wrote in court documents. “Sometime after Erin left with Lee, her phone was deactivated (turned off). Detectives believe if Erin was injured and left at an undisclosed location, she would not (be) able to call for help.”

It  is unknown if what investigators swore is accurate, or perhaps were unaware of Beasely described as a  “…light haired,  skinny guy, small guy, not much hair, but sandy colored hair, shorter than 5’9″, who could have been a Marine…”  individual appeared to meet up with Erin Corwin at approximately 10 AM the morning of her disappearance.  But it is clear that if Mr. Beaseley’s account is accurate, it is not likely to fit the description of Chris Lee.

In the wake of the recent developments,  The Heavilin family returned to Tennessee over weekend.

I do not believe that Mrs. Lee was ignorant of the situation.

-The latest reports of his wife making statements about not finding the body I think you may be right-and I am not so sure it will turn out to be as clear cut as her lover took her life-

What I mean by that is the first thought I had was the Graham/Zamora case
In which the scorned love demanded that the cheater prove his love and make it right by doing away with the other woman who “for a moment” took her place

Given that Erin might have been pregnant w/ his child- that could have added a whole other level of hell hath no fury….

IDK the wife just seems to fit the type from what Ive read of someone who would demand he right his wrongs or at least be fine with it when he did “prove” his love then be sure to stand behind HER man at all costs…
Heck right now it might be a case of she solved the problem and he went along for the ride…

See what u made me do…

Regardlees I think she was quite satisfied with the outcome up until she was hounded by police or Erin was found and the arrests began

If it turns out she turned on him and talked- then IMO she was WAY more involved than she told LE.

Your speculation about the possibility of Mrs. Lee being the actual perp doing the deed is plausible. She could have been the one to take Erin into the desert to the mine shaft and performed the murder. This could also account for the sighting at the drop point of the vehicle and the person locking it up and getting into the jeep. C. Lee could just be covering for his wife.

However, we don’t have all the information that LE collected at the scene. There could have been footprints and tire tracks still visible that were compared with information previously obtained. Desert soils will keep tracks visible for a long time.

I believe both of them are involved in the crime. It will probably not be known factually until there is an PR event by the SBCS giving the public facts that are irrefutable and will not hurt the prosecution of the case.

I Just recently caught up on this sad case.

Sadly The Lees have a child together all ready – which makes this whole thing just more heart wrenching.

But this detail has me wondering where was the child if Mom and Dad were plotting and where was the child IF Mom was helper or doer….

perhaps Lees Wife was with the child at home and couldn’t have participated and did not know until after police became involved

She could have been talking so protective and matter of fact IRT the “body” because she was protecting her childs Dad and not so much herself or her love interest…

@Blink and Rose: I cringe every time I think of the circumstances of this crime. I read that the area around that particular mine was difficult terrain even for off-road vehicles so I am thinking CL may have chosen that particular mine shaft for that very reason. He also seriously underestimated the skills and level of determination of those who volunteered to search for Erin.

If the witness did see EC get into the car, I would bet my next paycheck that the SBCSD already knows everything there is to know about the red car and the driver. Imo, sound evidence has led the state to charge CL with murder with the special circumstances of lying in wait. Usually in a capital murder case the prosecutor will keep all of her/his cards close to the vest so no telling what is going on with NL behind the scenes right now. Did NL lure Erin out to where CL was lying in wait? I guess we will have to patiently wait as this plays out.

Agreed 100% Grace- and I daresay it’s the reason “red car” was withheld.
There is an informant/witness/immunity-granted person involved in Erin’s recovery.

I thank God for that. She deserved to be the priority for recovery aside from all else, imo. I agree and commend SBCSD and respective SAR contributions to the nth.

@Grace. Based on the time EC left home, it is my feeling she had been disposed of prior to 10:30 and ML was bringing her car back to civiliation & was witnessed. I do not believe NL lured EC out there as Isabel M said they did not associate or speak after January. To me “lying in wait” means CL & EC met up by preplan somewhere ( be named the place & awaited ber there” at which time he by prior plan embarked on hiis murderous behavior chain.

wrt ” I read that the area around that particular mine was difficult terrain even for off-road vehicles so I am thinking CL may have chosen that particular mine shaft for that very reason.”
I suspect it was chosen not solely for natural barriers to a search’s access, but because its severe isolation and wild rawness and desolation were what a depraved mind seeking retribution and violent vengance thought fitting for her.
This leads me to think NL, not CL, as planner in chief.

  11. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Grace

You are quite right in thinking that the location was picked for its difficulty of access. There was a photo posted on one of the blog sites that showed two SAR people suiting up at the side of a gravel road. There was nothing that indicated the photo was at the actual site of the recovery. That photo could be years old.

If, if fact, it was a photo of the actual site, the road was in good shape and could be used by an auto. The slope down the hill from the roadside was steep, but could be walked with proper footwear.

We do not know how the mine shaft lay in reference to vertical or horizontal. It could be a vertical shaft that was 140 feet down to reach the ore vein or it could have been something less, but steep enough to require a ladder or handrail to access it. The shaft was steep enough that one of those on the recovery team had some injuries in getting the body out.

The searchers recovered 22 cal. brass casings from the site. This indicates an automatic weapon was used, or a very stupid perp who emptied the chambers of a revolver of used brass and didn’t pick them up.

The red car is to me the very key piece of information that we know exists, but nothing about its connection to the crime.

The Lee’s were in the process of packing up to move to Anchorage, Alaska. They had rented a U-Haul truck for the move.

I will conjecture here that the red car was a borrowed vehicle or that some reason was given for the person in the red car to pick up NL after she parked Erin’s car.

For all we know, NL could have driven the red car out to the mine site and hidden it nearby, then proceeded on foot to the mine and CL arrived in Erin’s car for the supposed hunting trip. After the altercation, they could have switched cars and driven back to the drop location for Erin’s vehicle.

If that is the actual scene, then DNA from both the Lee’s would be found in each vehicle. There would also be soil that matched the area found and perhaps other traceable evidence.

I believe that the car drop took place in the mid-morning. Whatever actually happened was over and Erin was probably deceased. The spent 22 shells could have been used on her. In addition, a fall of over 100 feet into a mine shaft would likely be fatal.

Erin lived in the desert area for several months. She would have known how to protect herself from the heat with proper clothing and a hat.

  18. Rose says:

If a tire was found with her, & CL claimed to be tireburning
that day, I bet he threw a burning tire down the shaft not
knowing the lack of oxygen would stop the burning.

  19. Malty says:

ATG. I hope you are right I hate thinking she was waiting all excited to celebrate the baby with Chris for any length. of time that would be so cruel. On top of everything else

  20. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Rose

Times have changed in the military. In my day, the gunnery range officer would have made you clean about 100 weapons if you did not pick up your brass and drop them into the bucket for that purpose.

This is one of the things that makes me believe that NL could be the actual shooter. The more we learn, the more I think that NL was the person in charge in the Lee family.

There are car rentals that use older cars. The original idea came from a guy in Los Angles with his “Rent a Wreck” lot.Steve McQueen rented from him so that he could travel without being noticed.

  21. Malty says:

Interesting about rent a wreck I don’t know if we have one here
Why was CL burning tires I thought he trained horses What tires
Just his own old ones I guess he may have got new tires for the trip
I wonder about A lot of stuff we are missing info even with Blinks efforts
Like why are they in Alaska Is that their home place Has NL got a record

It seems real hard to think of Erin’s last day how could Chris do this it is
So cold what was wrong with just dumping her land leaving with his wife like other men will do sometimes in a situation killing her and the baby seems extreme

  22. Rose says:

@ATG. We have a Rent A Wreck near us I
used to use a lot. It is a block from a volvo repair,
    whom I visited frequently.
@Blink. Do you believe she was killed
at the entrance to mine as casings were
there? That seems pretty coldblooded, like
    mcstays.

I think the lying in wait accusation is consistent with that, but I can’t get past the fact that CL invited other friends to go the day before. I never reported this- because I could never tie it in, but there were a few odd fires in the general area within a few days of Erin’s disappearance.

Typically, but not necessarily, these intimate partner homicides are not planned in advance. I do think there is either an accomplice or co-conspirator who is talking to LE and that is how Erin was finally located.

  23. Ode says:

    ****
It could be as simple as he already knew the other people had plans and would say no….and he has established the facade of not pre-planned.

Agreed of course, but he would know he would be suspect numero uno. That is inconsistent with other activity after the fact, imo.
    B

  24. A Texas Grandfather says:

Burning tires is not a quick process. They can burn for days. It is not known what the fee for tire disposal is in California. If it is like the other fees and taxes it could be $10.00 per tire. That would be forty dollars for a set of four. Something to think about making the disposal oneself and saving the money.

The other reason I can think of is to destroy evidence. Tire treads can be matched by forensics. It is not known if the 22 cal. pistol or revolver was recovered. A fire from a tire is hot enough to severely damage such a weapon to the point if it is found it would be difficult to determine if it was used in the crime.

According to one of the reports in the media, LE set up a ten by 30 mile rectangle and searched all known mine shafts and wells within the chosen area. Maybe someone who knew something became alarmed at the search process and decided to give themselves some protection by coming forward and helping LE.

  25. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Rose

It would be difficult to move a body down a steep slope for disposal. Of course we do not know how far off the road the mine shaft was located. So yes, I think that she was shot at the site and then pushed into the mine shaft.

Malty you are a rational person who can think about what the result of such an action could be. Irrational people think that they can do something such as this and never get caught. You are so right. Why was it necessary to harm Erin and the fetus? Why not just walk away?

There are two reasons that come to mind. The first is jealousy and control. The second is the legal responsibility of paying child support for eighteen years. Jealousy, at such a level, is a form of insanity and insane people often cause harm to others.

Erin lost a baby earlier. We don’t have information as to the reason. She may have been one of those who have a difficult time carrying a baby to term. Or, there could have been a physical reason from an outside source that caused the miscarriage.

At this point in time, we know of at least two people who are involved in the murder. When the time comes for the trial, we may learn who else played a part.

  26. A Texas Grandfather says:

Fox News is reporting that Lee has plead Not Guilty to the charges in a court in San Bernadino County. The prosecutor told the court that the brass picked up at the mine shaft and the steel rebar tied him to the case.

A part of the charges was “lying in wait”. This tells me that they have evidence that he used the hunting trip to make Erin the hunted. This is just the beginning of the legal case. There may be others that get charges.

    Brass -as in casings?
    B

  27. Rose says:

@ATG. ” Or, there could have been a physical reason”
We know she was horse-riding in the miscarriage month.
We don’t know where miscarriage occurred.
    Could’ve been at the Ranch.
Could be husband stopped going to the Tanch out of blame.

  28. Rose says:

If CL invited others the day before, that suggests the Corwins as a couple were invited.
Therefore Mr Corwin would know CL was out in the desert doing whatever on Sat.
And could’ve sent a fake friend text apparently from Erin that she was celebrating
her conception in the desert with Chris.
    who’s the 10:30 am dame?

  29. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Yes Blink

People who shoot and those in the military refer to spent casings as brass. I should have clarified this so that everyone reading could know my meaning. The term does not extend to shot shells.

We know that 22 cal, is a rim fire casing. That is the primer is struck by the firing pin on the rim rather than the center as in larger calibers. Every weapon marks a casing in a unique way. The spent casings or brass at the site were matched to some found in Lee’s jeep and with some found in the rental home. They also found unfired rounds that matched the brand when the home was searched.

I don’t know how LE came to their conclusion about the rebar unless they found finger prints or clothing fibers on it or marks from a cutting tool that matched rebar found in Lee’s possession.

  30. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Rose

In regards to the physical reason, it could have been several things such as the one you posted. It could have been that she could have had a problem in the wall of the uterus and the fetus became detached from normal activities. Lifting a heavy weight at the home or the store where she worked could have caused the miscarriage.

One of the things that makes little sense is that Corwin was found drunk in the rental home with a lot of damage of possessions and perhaps some damage to the house. What was the reason for him to be drunk and angry enough to destroy things? Did Erin tell him about the affair or admit to it when questioned or was he on an alcoholic binge that happened from time to time?

  31. GraceintheHills says:

Below are some statements from Jon Corwin about how he learned about the affair in March, but thought it was over – and – how he was questioned repeatedly by LE in those first few days even as CL was being questioned.

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/08/26/erin-corwin-husband-jon–closure/14606791/

I don’t think CL invited both of the Corwins out to shoot that day. Those two couples became estranged after the affair came to light months before, and were no longer close.

By the way, it has been written that Jon stopped going to the ranch because he wasn’t that into horses.

So far, I haven’t seen any evidence whatsoever that suggests Jon Corwin was involved in this crime, and I don’t want to malign someone who is another victim of CL. Not so sure about NL, as some of her statements to Megli were odd. I wouldn’t be surprised if she has assisted in this investigation. She was certainly not in court with CL.

    Just my two cents worth.

  32. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Thanks for the link Grace

There is another article linked to your link that explains the process of how LE and SAR people found the location. A map existed from the 1960′s of many of the mines in the area. That was used by LE to select a primary search area. The map was updated as the search took place. The mine where Erin was found was a gold mine dug in the early 1980′s during the gold price run-up of that time. It and others were added to the map. The search team were able to use GPS to get exact geo coordinates for the sites visited.

I can remember ordering some special computer cables with gold plated contacts that were priced according to the market price of gold on the day they were fabricated. Conductivity of electricity is more efficient when silver, gold or platinum is used when compared to copper or aluminum.

Here is another interesting story, ATG, that I thought you might find interesting. I can’t help but think of what Erin may have thought and felt in those last few minutes of her life…I truly hope she didn’t know was about to happen and didn’t feel any fear or panic.

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2014/08/28/erin-corwin-marine-wife-murder-gold-mine/14741271/

This may be the same article that mentions that this mine shaft fell vertically 100 feet, then sloped, so the spelunker had to go all the way inside to find Erin. They not only used cameras in the mines, but cadaver dogs as well. I think one article said phone pings helped LE narrow the search to certain areas. I am still amazed that they were able to find her and bring her home to her family. All of the searchers were the best!

The SAR teams in this case were stellar- I completely agree.
    B

  34. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Grace

The USA today story is the one that was linked on the site of the previous site. That is the one where the details of some of the procedures of LE and SAR people used to examine the multitude of mine shafts in the area.

I did not mention in my previous post that the empty shells and the rebar were found at the bottom of the shaft, not on the surface. That means to me that CL was hiding the evidence of the means of death.

Since Erin cannot describe her part of what actually happened, everyone is left with the forensics and Lee’s account or lack thereof.

I think that CL found out that Erin was pregnant and he asked her to abort the fetus and she refused so he chose to abort them both-mother and baby.

As sad and stupid as this activity is, it is a prime case of a young, apparently shy young woman who lacked the skills or experience to protect herself from the advances of an older male who was taking advantage of her. She also was married to a guy who may not have given her much help in getting out of the situation.

We don’t know if CL found out about the planned exploration of the area by Erin after she told him about the pregnancy and followed her or if the story Erin gave to her husband was untrue. If she was only two weeks pregnant, then the affair had not ended in March as she told him and he told the reporter in the article.

There are many reasons for miscarriage- sometimes it’s as simple as there is some sort of deformity or gene flaw in the embryo/fetus that causes them. I’ve known of 2 people who have had miscarriages in the past year. From babycenter.com “About 10 to 20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, and more than 80 percent of these losses happen before 12 weeks.”

It is very common and unfortunately occurs without a definitive reason. I miscarried twice, once at 17 weeks and once at 12 weeks. OBGYN and risk-specialist could never pinpoint an issue and while I ultimately delivered two healthy children, I had 2 difficult pregnancies with one 6 weeks early and the other 3 weeks early, induced after an FLM test. What I found very odd is that in Jon Corwin’s interview- he never mentioned her previous pregnancy or what was to be believed her current pregnancy.

Here is a very in depth article about the case and a small portion of the evidence against this scumbag. There’s also a recent picture of him. He is starting to emerge as the slimy killer he is.

Sounds like he had an undiagnosed mood or personality disorder.
    Suicidal/homicidal.
    Ineffective assistance of counsel.
    Should’ve gotten a psychological.
His going on the stand to confess was again suicidal.

With much respect I regret to say we (as a country) do a poor job at preparing for, and treating our military and their families for tours of duty and military base life, imo. It is a bigger problem than I believe people even realize- it has no bearing on whether or not Lee was guilty , but to your point- the whole concept is unnatural and lacks support to nuclear families (traditionally) as it is. This is one of those cases where SAR truly deserves the acclamation- finding Erin’s remains was a herculean effort in an incredibly difficult terrain.
