Sandra Cantu Murder: Melissa Huckaby Arrested

Posted by BOC Staff | Amber Alert,Kidnapping,Missing Persons,Murdered,Sandra Cantu | Saturday 11 April 2009 9:09 am

Tracy, CA- At 2:59 AM PST, Melissa Huckaby, 28, was arrested on kidnapping and suspicion of murder charges for 8 year old Sandra Cantu.

Sources inside the investigation have confirmed to Blink on Crime that Huckaby had been on Tracy PD Investigators radar almost immediately. Huckaby was the last person to see Sandra alive, and claimed she frequently played with her 5 year old daughter at the home she shared for the last year with her grandparents Pastor Clifford Lane Lawless and Connie Lawless.

huckabyarrested-1

It would seem Huckaby raised immediate flags to police and the community when she told Investigators a black suitcase containing scrapbooking supplies for her Sunday school class had been stolen from her driveway.  Huckaby is also due to be sentenced on a theft charge on April 17th, in which she claimed to be mentally incompetent to stand trial. Following a mental evaluation, the court determined she was fit and she pled guilty of the charge.

Melissa Huckaby is the daughter of Brian Lawless, who is also affilliated with a Baptist Church; NOT his dad’s.

Blink on Crime has learned that although Melissa has told police  she is a Sunday School teacher at the Clover Baptist Church which her grandfather Lane Lawless is a pastor, she is not.

Huckaby is a volunteer Sunday School teacher and Church Choir member at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Bellflower, CA.  Located at 9246 Rosser St, FMBC shows both Huckaby’s Father and Uncle, Brett Lawless, are assistant pastors or Bible Class educators in a church completely unaffilliated with their Fathers. Odd.

Why would this woman have access to her grandfather’s church that by all accounts has no more than 15 members and has not had actual services in years? The last confirmed continuing education classes I can track Lawless to is in 2007.

Huckaby claimed to have received a note the day after Sandra Cantu went missing saying “Cantu.. suitcase..water..” with the word suitcase mispelled and at least the word Whitehall in it.  Blink on Crime has received an unverified tip  the note in question was actually written by Huckaby prior to a suicide attempt which landed her in Sutter Tracy Hospital last week in the ICU. Tracy Police were stationed outside of her room in rotating shifts while Investigators continued to build their case.

By Huckaby’s own admission, she volunteered that as recently as a few months ago, she was interviewed by police regarding a 7 year old girl from the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park who she had taken to a nearby park three times during that week with her five year old daughter.  She stated to several reporters in telephone interviews late yesterday afternoon that at approximately 2 am,  hours after she returned the young playmate, police showed up at her trailer and told her the child had narcotics in her system. Blink on Crime has attempted to corroberate this information with Sgt. Tony Sheneman of the Tracy Police Department, but Sheneman was unaware of the incident. He has requested that information from Investigators. Regarding the suitcase she claimed had been stolen, she told reporters that she did not have online access to report it, but her myspace page indicates otherwise.

melissamyspacelawless-1

Sgt. Sheneman answered a few questions from reporters last evening indicating that the information that led to Huckaby’s arrest came from her directly. When asked by a reporter if there would be more arrests he stated that he did not anticipate their would be additional arrests in this case, It is my opinion that Sgt. Sheneman chose his words very carefully for a reason.  He responded: “not in this particular case ..”

I will go out on a limb on this one and interpret that response for my readers, albeit subjectively, I admit.  You have a woman with a history of drug abuse, a juvenile record and current theft charges, who has been investigated for narcotics being found in a small girl, who was taken to a “park” in the evening for several hours . You have a town that is currently investigating 60 Sex Offenders, convicted of various assaults on children, and two recent high profile arrests of men within the school district accused of similar atrocities, awaiting trial. You have an 8 year old child abducted and murdered and I believe her pathology report will show drugs in her system. You have Fred Williams, a church member/caretaker with access to the church and shed who lies about a rummage sale, is seen on video dropping off the “letter to Sandra’s killer” at the memorial site , and lives in a 4,000 sq Ft. home worth over half a mill with extensive rap sheets for him and the Mrs. hanging on the fridge. Was that note to Mel to the Issa to keep quiet?

So.. the question becomes.. Why would she be drugged, for what purpose? I feel strongly this is the tip of the iceberg within Orchard Estates and the Clover Baptist Church.  On the comments section of my site, you will note their is a poster who claims Christian Sinclair and Huckaby are “dating.” You will also note that I received some comments from a person claiming to be Sinclair’s child. I checked them out, she is.  She posted that the Isuzu Trooper impounded by the FBI had been returned last week. She was correct, but what has not yet been, is his Cadillac, pictured here next to Huckaby’s KIA in the FBI Forensic Bay:

In a 3 am Press conference, Chief of Tracy Police Department Janet Thiessen spoke briefly:

..over the course of the investigation, agents and investigators from numerous agencies, have been instrumental in identifying Melissa Huckaby as being responsible for Sandra’s death.” “We have information that Sandra, by the time she was reported missing to us, probably had already been murdered.”

I don’t think that moving a 60 lb piece of luggage over grass & dirt is particularly difficult for a motivated woman. That particular bag looks to be the hard plastic variety with smooth sides and a handle. Use the wheels for hard smooth pavement & floors. Tip it on it’s side to pull it across grass & dirt, down the slope, probably slides along well enough to get the terrible job done.

Is it true that the farm workers who reported the case have refused reward $?

I have also wondered why the camera was installed in the first place. However I also know that you don’t need any kind of expertese to install one.

    How would she know this??

Connie Lawless said they had nothing to do with the girl’s abduction.

“She was the sweetest little thing. It breaks it our hearts to think that anyone would take such a tiny little thing and abuse her and murder her,” she said.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090407/ap_on_re_us/calif_missing_girl

Seems odd to say abuse her and murder her, who said she was abused???

  4. Jim says:

You do realize that Bellflower and Tracy are 350 miles apart? How could someone who lives in Tracy be a Sunday school teacher in Bellflower on any sort of regular basis?

By my estimation and with traffic, about 5 hours.. yes..
What I said was that she had spent the bulk of her SS work there, I did not say when or how frequently.. I believe that is actually another clue into this woman’s issues..

Blink- GREAT SITE! SO much info here… you are awesome!!

A few things- first, about the camera. I am thinking there was another camera too or more images. The reason is that in one of Sheneman’s earlier press conferences, a reporter asks him if the second half (I think she used this term) of the surveillence video of Sandra will be released. He said not at this time. This was a press conf. that was on Tues Apr.11, I think.

I find it very odd that Melissa is involved with this alone. The prior incident of drugging a child, and the possibility that Sandra may have been drugged sounds sooo much like how the sick kiddie porn rings operate. I really think others were involved in this scheme…perhaps Melissa did cause her death by OD’ing her, but I doubt this was all her alone. I mean, according to the police station report here on this site, she is 5’3″, 125lbs. Not a big person.. how did she transport that poor soul and the suitcase into the pond by herself? The really weird thing is that in one of today’s articles in the Tracy Press, Sheneman is quoted as saying,
“There are no other suspects and no more arrests are expected, said police spokesman Sgt. Tony Sheneman”
    ref:
    http://www.tracypress.com/pages/full_story?article–Disbelief-%20=&page_label=news&id=2303626–Disbelief-&widget=push&instance=secondary_stories_left_column&open=&

I find it hard to believe no one else is involved in this.. Blink, any thoughts on this comment from Tracy PD or the involvement of others???

That is not a quote, that is a reporters opinion, and I addessed that very issue in my article.
No way, I do not belive that Melissa huckaby is the linch pin here.

    This is to **JustWondering**

I’ve heard that the grandfather would trap cats because they’ve been loitering in his place, peeing, etc. Anyway, I believe some people were unhappy and slashed his tires so he decided to install the camera.

My initial thought was that someone was PO’d with the grandfather and decided to take Sandra in exchange of their pet. Some people treat their animals like their children.

I guess I was wrong on that theory …

Some armchair sleuthing indicates that M.H. (although this could be a different M.H., since she insists other charges are not hers) had some major civil issues back in 2002. We have already heard about past criminal problems. Apparently, Sutter Tracy Hospital sued her. I am posting this as it is available for the public records online. 8. Sue says:

To Jaelin and others asking about “kidnapping”: Kidnapping is a legal term and differs from the lay idea of kidnapping. Legally, kidnapping means moving a person any distance in order to commit a crime upon them, such as to hold them against their will, molest them, kill them. For example, it can be “kidnapping” to move a person from one room to the next, or from outside a house to inside a house, or vice versa. This charge is often added, if at all possible, because it can make penalties greater. Also, if for some reason the murder charge does not stick, the kidnapping charge is a good back-up.

The reason they would arrest her “on suspicion of” is because they are not ready to charge her. Generally speaking, they are going to have to charge her within about 72 hours of arresting her. There are reasons they did not charge her: First, determining the charges and writing them up takes time and is done by the prosecutor. Second, the police may want to spend the weekend gathering some more information and evidence. They had probable cause to arrest her, and they could not let her go, considering she was suicidal and they believe she has killed a child. But right now, you can bet the police are catching some much-needed and well-deserved sleep.

  9. Pat says:

Some questions I have may have answered early on, but since I just recently discovered this great site, I do want to ask:

    1. Who owns the church building itself? Is the church its on entity?

    2. With so few (as has been speculated) members of this “church” – how does Mr. Lawless and this suspicious caretaker make their salaries and the bills paid? Something smells funny regarding this church…

    3. Usually when some church official has been associated with a crime, supporters make sure they are heard. What have WE heard in regards to Mr. Lawless and his church? SILENCE.

About 5 pm tonight I was on my way home and saw a dirty purple SUV in the police station parking lot. It sure looks like the one M.H. drove last night. It was facing directly across to the high school. It gave me the chills…

In my personal opinion Fred Williams is involved in this case way past his baggy rear-end jeans! To me he was a white elephant from the start. I shall change my opinion if he is cleared. I also found it very strange (when searching a few days ago) that the church web-page hasn’t had activity on it for several years…hmmmm.

I do believe still, that several rocks are yet to be overturned in this case. Thanks Blink once again…for your continued perserverance, dedication, and passion to make sure that justice is served.

I agree with the person who said we hear too much of this kind of thing now days! Our justice system is to blame. Look at how they let the worst offenders out for good behaviour only to committ the same crimes or worse ones. If there was true consequences for one’s actions then people would think twice before doing these types of things. We’ve become so numb to the shock of these crimes. I can’t bring myself to imagine what that poor child’s parents must be going through. I am sure this horrible woman will sit in prison for years and years living off our tax dollars while awaiting the death penalty.
What baffles me is the satanic mindset of these types of people against innocent children. The past few years so many innocent children have died by the hands of these cruel people.

From my research, it is not uncommon for an apostate church to be a cover for nefarious activities where you may see multiple personalities, mkultra mind control, secret societies (i.e. freemasons), Satanism, drugs, child porn and human sacrifice.

And this would mean officials at every level could be involved in the cover-up and/or the mess up of the case. Please read ‘Franklin Cover-up’ by John DeCamp for reference. Also, remember the unsolved Jon-Benet case among others.

It is all so tragic. My prayers and deepest condolences go out to the Cantu family and the Tracy community.

Blink, this blog is truly awesome. While most crime blogs just accept everything at face value and repeat what they find on other sites, you dig deeper and explain the clues, thank you!

This place has attracted a good group of commenters, too, so I’d like to ask them a favor. Could you please not use insidery code nicknames when discussing the case? It took me five minutes to figure out that Mel to the Issa wasn’t some kind of crazy typo. And Killerby?? Good grief, I thought I had accidentally clicked onto a different case entirely.

Keep up the great work, everybody, but please be more respectful of your elders (me). ;-)

Pastor Lane Lawless was saved in Wenatchee, Washington, In April of 1960. He was baptized July 9, 1960 by the authority of the Eastside Missionary Baptist Church of East Wenatchee. http://www.clover-road-baptist-church.com/Pastor1.html

Well people, back in 1995 in East Wenatchee, police busted a big child pornography ring, operating inside a CHURCH and the pastors house! His wify was also involved. I’m starting to believe this ring has been together since the 60′s. http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-16947472.html

  24. nascarmom says:

This church is 5hrs away and the pastors names are not listed as her father or uncle??
They are not actual pastors from what I can tell, they are instructors on the “Worship Team” it’s on the site Brian and Brett Lawless..

  25. Honey says:

Im wondering if Lawless has anything to do with the Wenatchee ring, if there is some connection from way back in the 60′s. I’m not sure, but this is something to be looked at.

  26. Honey says:

I found another article saying that the Wenatchee Pastor Robert Roberson and his wife Connie were cleared on all 14 counts, but I’m really starting to wonder if they were actually guilty. I’m wondering if there is some connection. I could be wrong, but my instincts believe different.

  27. Tracyite says:

I have no doubt this woman could move that suitcase by herself, she may be on the short side but she’s certainly not petite. I’m about the same and would have no problem. I wouldn’t have had a problem when I weighed a buck five either. I’m not sure we’ve seen the last of the arrests though as LE has played this close to the vest all along. If there is another arrest gut says Fred Miller is next. I suppose it’s possible that his lies were not his own, that he may have been unwittingly repeating MH’s lies, but I doubt that — Thanks in large part to you Blink. I first heard of him here and I’ve been following this from the first hours. I’ve lived in Tracy for the last 26 years, was out looking for Sandra and found myself a little more emotionally invested than I realized. You’re doing a first-rate job at maintaining a site that doesn’t devolve into finding entertainment in another’s tragedy. Ten Stars & Multitudes of Blessings to you for that.

I could be wrong but I don’t believe her grandparents had knowledge of what transpired and I don’t think they aided in a cover-up. I can only imagine their surprise, disbelief and suspicions beginning to surface when she started running off at the mouth to the media yesterday, essentially digging her own grave. I do imagine that they likely had information that wouldn’t have seemed incriminating before MH’s blabfest that they would have to question after hearing it. I can’t imagine having such a realization about my grandchild. Luckily, she was arrested before they would find themselves in probably the biggest moral dilemma of their lives.

  28. Honey says:

Also, some of the suspects convicted in the Wenatchee child ring did admit to their crimes.

  29. Honey says:

A few years back, my buddy was busted with drugs and guess who turned him in? A Convicted Child Molester!! The child molester was able to get off on the conviction ( now on the streets, never served a day in prison) for molesting his grand daughter, because he turned in a drug dealer. Now does that sound right? How can this Child Molester be a credible witness to the fact drugs were being sold. LE likes to keep child molesters on the streets to turn in drug dealers. My buddy spent 3 years behind bars for Marijuana, while our LE let a child molester go?? SICK WORLD! That is our problem with LE, can’t trust them!

Law Enforcement + Child Molesters = Buddies!!

  30. dddeerma says:

None of this makes sense yet. Is this woman charged with suspicion so that she can be encouraged to roll over on accomplices in crime? Knowing that the church was essentially defunct makes the grandfather a very strange person as well. What kind of minister has a building and doesn’t use it for services? Why would the sinister caretaker have keys to a building that isn’t used? Is it possible that there was a prior investigation that this will eventually link up to? Sitting all alone in the jail facing the death penalty charge may make Melissa much more cooperative next week.

  31. dddeerma says:

Honey: thanks for your posts and I agree that it should be investigated. Churches and nonprofits make it easy for criminals to pass under the radar. This child porn ring information leaves me sick to my stomach. It is so hard to believe there are individuals who attack children, much less organized groups. New laws: no keys to the jail house door for pedophiles and rapists.

  32. Tan says:

Does Melissa have full custody of her child? I am stunned at how these people(Ronald Cummings and Melissa) have custody of children…given their criminal records.

  33. Pat says:

    Tracyite ::

Although Melissa appears to be strong enough to move that suitcase by herself remember that suitcase would have to be lifted to be put in and out of a car and would contain the body of an 8 yr old child perhaps weighing 60 lbs(?) prior to death.. But then that could explain Melissa’s ‘internal bleeding’ perhaps from straining herself from lifting too much weight..

I do have a hard time with the fact that no one saw her putting this suitcase in the car and then putting it in that water.. Interesting also that some people that have lived in the town awhile said they never knew that drainage pond existed but Melissa being a fairly new resident knew it was there..

  34. Kathy Maxwell says:

It would not be difficult for a 125 lb. woman to move that suitcase with the body in it. This was a small child, just turned 8 yrs. As a female letter carrier I can tell you that it is normal to lift and carry similar weight and even heavier. Females do this kind of lifting all over the country every day. Even in our homes we lift similar weights without realizing it. Do not be mislead into thinking she required help getting rid of the body just because of the weight.

  35. Cathy says:

Thanks Honey for the tip on the Wenatchee child ring. I had never head of it.

Praying for Truth t be revealed and lies exposed!

Blink, this blog is awesome. Definately provides an avenue for sharing thoughts and in a small way sharing grief.

I am also suspicous of this horrible act being carried out solo. But, if it is true I can’t help thinking that is odd the way she reached out to the press. Waving as she drove by, texting, phone calls. Maybe she has been seeing all the attention be given out to these other child murder cases involving women i.e. Anthony case, Haley case (girl friend), ect. and wanted some attention of her own.

  37. Scratch says:

After reading the SFGate article, I’m considering the possibility that Melissa suffers from Munchausen by Proxy disorder. Her daughter’s questionable state of health, but obvious sickly appearance, and Ms. Huckaby’s apparent control issues concerning her daughter, are all red flags of the disorder. It seems that Ms. Huckaby might crave the attention gained from either her own vague, uncorroborated illness’s or worse, may be the source of her daughter’s.

If that attention was so vital to Melissa’s well-being, an intrusion like “Sunny Sandra” could be a threat that Melissa was unable to cope with. If Melissa’s only social and familial interaction was solely dependent on her own daughter’s ability to facilitate that, Melissa could possibly have deemed the shadow cast by Sandra’s bright personality as the ultimate challenge to her source of validation.

I can only imagine how much more tragic the circumstances would be if Sandra was killed for simply being so easy to love…… of course, MHOO..

  41. JmBrdy says:

MH could have possibly been a little ‘high’ when backing out of the driveway at the same time Sandra came skipping along. If she hit her, and in great fear, grabbed her and threw her in the car to take to the church, that would be kidnapping. If she unfolded a bed at the church and laid Sandra on it to see how she was doing, but NEVER called for help and let her die, that could be construed as murder. It is possible that it was a accident gone way bad. It has been stated that the DA has to determine if it was premeditated.

MH having a record and upcoming court appearance would have been terrified of any repercussion from hitting a little girl. Especially if she was intoxicated. Even if she wasn’t intoxicated she could have panicked.

Maybe she thought she could get a better look at her and see if how hurt she was if she got her out of there. Maybe she thought Sandra would be OK, but realized when she saw the extent of the injuries, that Sandra was going to die. Then what? She had already hit her with the SUV, kidnapped her and was going to go down for this whole bizarre thing.

I realize it was early afternoon, that kids may have been out and about playing, but it doesn’t mean there were kids in front of that very home at that very instance. Only takes a couple seconds to back over a person, jump out see what you’ve done, and throw them in the car before you take off.

Anyway, this is just my theory. I’m not so sure with it being stated that she acted alone, and with her overwhelming display of guilty feelings (declaring the suitcase as hers, discussing the ‘letter’ left with the location of the body, willingly speaking with police with no attorney present)…. I’m thinking it was an accident gone bad.

What is the truth? They could have been set up:

“The Robersons contended the charges were leveled against them as retaliation after they spoke out against a larger sex ring investigation.”

Just what and the heck goes on in tese trailer parks? one woudl think the owner of the park WOULD for god sakes, do a background check on the people before they move in. What a cestpool this trailer park seems to have….80 pedofiles living in a 5 mile radius. Man oh man. I must say it is refreshing to see that this child killer’s grandparents are not screaming her NOT GUILTY or the NANNY did it. Seems the grandparents want answers. Unlike the Anthony family…Seems this chld killer melissa just might noe be the brightest blub in the batch. Somehow, Im getting the feeling theire is someone else involved here..Could be wrong. I hope this chick ROTS IN HELL for what she did. It defies logic. This didn’t have to happen, nor should it have. My prayers to the family of Sandra. May she rest in peace.

Blink….Upon reading other info on this case I have a question…..

I noticed that she had taken a child to the park and upon the childs return had drugs in her system….with that being said and reported…is there any chance or talk about these kids being drugged so they are NOT aware of themselves being raped/molested

Somehow I get the gut feeling this has been going on in the trailer park for a while. One has to wonder, how many other kids were drugged, without them nor their parents not knowing. Something just isnt’ right in this trailer park….Someone else knows something…..

    Hello Pat,

MH is actually not new to Tracy, she did move away though. She attended West High School in Tracy. I could fully grasp she knew those ponds were there as many high schoolers “party” or even “park” on the country roads/dead ends/levess that are nearby. Tracy High Schoolers have for generations.

Tracy Boulevard is a back way through the “islands” to go to Stockton.

Does the Lawless’ mobile home have a carport? Often these mobile homes have a narrow driveway and a carport making it easier for her to have loaded the suitcase in the car. That said, I will not be surprised if Mr. Williams assisted her.

  47. Tracey says:

I have not read everything on this case from here or Sm just yet. However, I’ve read any official statements made from law enforcement, etc.

The only thing that really strikes me, is I am really surprised so many people have a hard time believing this woman killed this little girl and that she must have just done the luring for someone (a man) else.

I know it sucks to believe this, but yes, there are sick, twisted women also on this planet, who commit atrocious, horrendous, crimes, like molestation, abuse and murder.

Finally, I have been a flight attendant for many years and a carry on suitcase with wheels is not that difficult to be pulled over grass, dirt, gravel etc., especially if you have the motivation. My motivation was only to not miss my flights. However, I, too, am a small person, 5’3″, 110lbs and I can not only pull a suitcase through the grass and gravel of a lot more than 60lbs. I can life it too overhead. And I am not a work out freak, etc., just your average small framed woman and it’s not unbelievable she did this with NO problem.

  48. Jaelin says:

Maybe Shenemen does not anticipate additional arrests in this case because they don’t have enough evidence to link someone to the crime. They may know Mr Williams was involved, but can’t find anything to prove it…

  49. Tanya says:

As to whether Melissa taught Sunday School at her Grandfather’s church, the SF Chronicle is reporting the following, indicating that she did: “‘She{Melissa} must have had a double life, because she seemed sweet and the Bible study kids love her,’ said Carlos Martinez, who lives in the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park near Huckaby. ‘This is a total shock.’”

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/04/12/MNJQ17163H.DTL

She spent time in Bellflower and only lived with the grandparents the last year following her divorce.
I am not stating that she was never in some capacity at the church, just not the once a week teacher being reported.

wanted to add to above post… also, according to a recent newspaper article, MH worked at Food 4 Less grocery store in Tracy for four years until she was fired.
So, she had lived in Tracy for years according to substantiated reports.

On another issue, where is her ex-husband and his family? They met at Food 4 Less – so he must be or was a Tracyite, as well.
