Morgan Harrington Case: Plea to Possible Witness From VSP
Charlottesville, VA– Early this morning, a flurry of activity surrounded what unfortunately amounted to a misquote on behalf of an article appearing in the Cavalier Daily:
Though investigators have confirmed that Harrington was last seen hitchhiking at 9:30 that night, they do not have sufficient evidence to prove or disprove that she fell victim to foul play, Geller said. In addition, police were able to retrieve Harrington’s purse and necklace but have not yet located a red digital camera that they believe was in her possession at the time of her disappearance.
Blink on crime has been able to confirm directly with Connie Geller, Public Relations Manager for the Virginia State Police: Morgan Harrington’s necklace has not been recovered, nor has Ms. Geller ever made such a statement regarding same.
However, there is recent developments that seem to infer that Ms. Harrington’s credit or debit card may have been used following her disappearance from the John Paul Jones Arena the evening of October 17, 2009.
“We’d hate to have anyone who just picked her up and dropped her at a gas station [to be reluctant to talk to us] because that person holds a very vital key to finding more information,” Geller said. “Investigators are willing to work with that person because right now the focus is on finding Morgan and bringing her back to her family.”
Even persons who have not seen Harrington since her disappearance can still be of assistance to the investigation, Geller said. For example, if anyone has noticed someone else acting strangely since around the time of the disappearance, he or she is encouraged to report the information.
Both Ms. Geller and Dr. Harrington have declined to answer the question as to whether or not Morgan’s card was used citing “investigative purposes.”
The last verified comments regarding a possible Morgan sighting and a gas station center around an account of a woman claiming to have seen her outside at a Sheetz station in Orange, VA the following morning of October 18th. Ms. Geller stated the VSP could not “disprove” this sighting, although their is no surveillance footage on the store security camera.

I don’t remember who saw her walk away from the arena with 4 guys but if we can believe Voth’s sighting, Morgan was on the bridge, then Mrs. Parson saw her at 3:45am coming out of a room on the Lawn with 3 guys, leaning against the wall talking to a tall guy with light curly hair and 2 guys waiting on the side, then early Sunday morning in Orange, Va at the Sheetz, looking dazed and worn out. Mrs. Parson said she saw her face, up close, and recognized Morgan and she is 100% sure, so she says. I have been hoping from the beginning that Morgan is alive and is “struggling” with something. O Lordie be.
yoshi, you’re right, here in virginny (in many stores, like 7-11) you don’t have to sign when you use a credit card for amounts under $25. And you swipe it yerself at the counter, so the clrk never looks at your signature.
I can’t find it now, but there was also the fellow that saw her Sunday morning get into a white Acura with a girl, in Organge Co.?

No, this observation is not in connection with the Sheetz gas station sighting. It was in the early morning hours on Sunday following the Saturday she went missing. Location was Zions Xroads off of I64 E. The observation was that there was a young girl with blonde hair, black mini skirt, black boots and a black t-shirt. My friend thought this was peculiar for early on a Sunday. He later heard of Morgan’s disappearance in our town of Charlottesville and he was sure that who he saw fit her discription so well that he turned in the information. They never got back in touch with him or confirmed that they even followed up on it. The young lady kind of walked with her head down and got into a white Acura with another female

I thought it seemed worthy of further investigation myself. My friend said that the reason that it stood out in his mind is he recalled observing and thinking the girl was dressed really strange for a Sunday morning with the black boots, mini skirt, and Pantera t-shirt. At the time he didn’t know that Morgan was missing. He says that he is nearly positive it was her.

just like this and three came up in this area, with a little side map? you know how some people say a place is in this area but it’s adress is actually called something else. people do it all the time. tell me go here and when i mapquest it…the store is actually in a different town. did the women ever mention where her sheetz, she goes to all the time is? How about an address? We then maybe can figure out a trajectory? Even if we do not believe this sighting…what else do we have?
I have watched those LOG videos and cannot for the life of me, find anyone that I would be willing to put a bet on. The alone girl who is thrashing her head, maybe Morgan, by herself??? Maybe this is when she hits her head??? I do not know???

Going the back way doesn’t make sense to me either (but then, what does make sense in this case?), because it is shorter to get to JMU from UVA by taking 64 to 81, and then JMU is right off of 81. The only reasons I can thing of for them to be in Orange is if they knew someone in that area or if they were trying to get to 95 to go north***
C: This is what I would agree too! What if they were trying to get to 95. Like I said it gets dark and confusing. Shortest distance to JMU is 81 but what if someone knew someone in this “Orange” area? Stopping to pick up someone or something??? I’m just saying, I would like to know that EXACT location of the Sheetz! Also, if coming over the mountain where is there a potential JMU party spot? I know kids around here go to the quarry, blue hole and reddish knob but all across town from this area. Over this way, I do not know of any. Skyline drive entrance (33) to cabins is closed at night. Massanutten Resort is this way. They have rentals. Just trying to now figure this one out.

I live in Orange County and go to the Sheets in question often. Despite what other(s) have said, the missing poster for Morgan is still prominently displayed there. Unlike, for whatever it is worth, the other stores in the area, where over time I’ve noticed the Morgan posters having been taken down. As to whether that was Morgan spotted there the day after the concert I still have doubts. As I posted here back in December, at my son’s preschool Christmas pagent in Orange, one of the family members in attendance looked like Morgan’s twin. Resemblance was uncanny. I’ve got to wonder if she was the one seen at the Sheets that morning.
a/ I was thinking about the LE asking any person that might see Morgan asking to make a call from someone else’s cell phone. If the could have some call to her parents, or one of her friends from a strange unidentified number/which is already closed, being a prepaid card/, and considering that it might be made by Morgan after the time of her disappearance… then:
b/ When the Mrs. Harrington in her recent post is asking the public/ and might be the LE/ to stop keeping reputations and instead focus on find Morgan/other victims in the area, or their predators faster/, and being more RESOURCEFUL.
c/ the information made in some post about the cell phone discovered in a garbage in the area where the concert was. could it be with the same sim card, the unknown prepaid number?
d/ and if the above tree points are possible: could it be that Mrs. Harrington is urging the public/responsible deputies/ LE, to find the proper resources to trace all the previous movement, being situated in some private/public/pentagon/cia satellites databases, that is not aveable for the LE in charge of the find Morgan case?
d/ just a possibility on why LE are certain Morgan got inside of the arena and to her seat: her fingerprints/dna..?

Skyler, i hate to correct you but i believe Observer stated that the BB players were not SUSPECTS in the disappearance of Ms Harrington, not that they weren`t involved, two completely different statements.
“M” is a very bitter person and if any of those claims about knowledge of the Harringtons have any hint of truth in them, i think this person needs to be found and investigated, what kind of person would imply the Harrington family deserved this scenario? Cold.

Mystified, thanks for #110. I also have doubts about the Sheetz sighting. I think it is extremely curious that Corinne Geller would make a statement about that sighting at this time.
Although I want to trust and believe in LE, it almost feels as though this were an attempt to pull the focus away from Charlottesville.Her statement was made within 1-2 days of Gil’s blog entry about complacency in Charlottesville.
It is almost as though LE is feeling the heat due to the Harrington’s persistence and advocacy (which I so admire them for) and is dropping false crumbs . There must be some level of frustration on the part of LE. I pray they are using all resources and agencies available to them to help find Morgan and bring her home

Heh. Good reference. Me thinks you may be right on the money. I mean seriously – it appears investigators are still fishing for significant clues/tips as to where she went from the bridge… which is very troubling, as I’ve assumed up until recently that they had a, um, clue, in that regard.
It’s clear we all sense the Harringtons are shifting gears and eyeing up a U-turn in their approach to Morgan’s disappearance – despite following LE’s directions up until this point. Granted, this is the first time I’ve duly followed a case in real time, so it may seem to be taking longer and providing much less fruit as the months flip by than typical MP/possible abduction or murder cases… but I have no frame of reference, as this is a new beat for me to some degree.

alex, *none* of these sightings have been confirmed, and I believe the 3:45 a.m. was discredited (which usually means LE determined who the witness actually saw). (The first sighting you noted – MH lookalike walking w/ 4 young guys – was bookkeeper entering the JPJ lot with ehr husband around 9;05 p.m., whom was interviewed nearly half-a-dozen times toward the beginning of the case.)
Studies upon studies upon studies – some cited here on BOC – show that the typical witness recall is not often accurate, and highly open to suggestion (even is said witness feels “100% sure”). These “sightings” really need to be taken with a grain of salt unless LE releases the location/time noted in them as part of MH’s movements.
… and, again: the accounts *we* know about are probably *not* the ones LE is working off. In fact, I’m fairly certain they’re not.
I do not mean to be downplaying this at all — and I, too, wish w/ all of my heart that Morgan is still alive — I will state I have always believed that the poster, Karen55, was truthfully stating what she saw and observed, w/ no intent on getting her “15 mins” of fame — that wasn’t posted here — or otherwise; I will say, w/ caution, I have asked my child a dozen times if he is sure he saw multiple blonde girls in Pantera t-shirts at the concert — his reply, by now is snippy, but still yes. He likes Pantera and he likes girls — he noticed —
while I do fully believe Karen saw a blonde girl w/ a Pantera t-shirt dressed in black miniskirt and boots — we can’t say it’s Morgan —
Again, on this issue, not meaning to be argumentative — but it’s like algebra, we have to balance the equation —
also, this goes back to the beginning of this situation — LE did not believe there was foul play — and they have a reason for that which they’re not sharing w/ the public — the original report stated they sent 2 agents out to the Sheetz — spoke w/ the person/manager on duty — reviewed the tapes — found nothing to substantiate the sighting and moved on —
the WV sighting over Christmas — someone got the license plate # of a Morgan dead ringer look-alike — bar bouncer said: absolutely, he remembers “that girl” being in the week before — they located the girl via the license plate — she looks very similar to Morgan — but not Morgan —
again, please don’t flame me — not being argumentative, not raining on anyone’s parade — want her home, too — we can certainly keep this pot simmering on the back burner, but the Sheetz sightings (plural on purpose; there was one in Zions Crossroads, too) — are not going to end up being the main course here, I do not believe —

For many many years I made my living by divorcing people — if the couple had gone to marriage counseling, they’d bring in the counselor to give some clarity — over and over I heard different professinals state: often, people just want to be heard — or want to feel that they are “being heard”

I am asking because I do not know the answer — I have zero idea of what happens prior to an arrest except for what I see on TV — those cases are resolved in 40 mins.

It has been in excess of three months w/out a trace of Morgan —
As a parent, what do you want more — your child returned — or — your child returned and the perp prosecuted —
Let me tell you — for me there is no hesitation whatsoever — I want my child back, even at the cost of ruining any hope of arrest and/or conviction —
LE “may” — speculation on my part — be telling them: don’t release the credit card information, we won’t be able to prosecute and we’re “this” — holding up thumb and index finger an inch apart — close —
If it were my child, I would tell LE : you have five days — make an arrest, or I’m going public with every known fact I have —
I would not “allude” to a predator being in the area either in Oct and Nov or continuously from Oct thru Nov — if there are public records showing arrests or police reports — I’d say: this is what I’m talking about —
If LE is telling the H’s — look, we’re this close to an arrest, give us more time — if I were LE and I had a real “suspect” — I’d be dogging that guy — he goes 5 miles over the speed limit — haul him in — parking ticket — haul him in —
they can bring him in for questioning and so what if he/she has a lawyer — they have the right to ask questions —
I absolutely cannot believe the H’s have not even asked the concert attendees whether or not they have pictures of Morgan from that day — whether at the concert or beforehand — in the car, etc. — For God’s sake, if they do, then post the damn picture so we know exactly what she looked like — what her clothes were —
how is posting a picture of what she looked like on that day impeding an arrest —
It has been stated that the H’s hired a PR firm at the beginning of this to assist them in recovering their girl — it makes no sense they wouldn’t try to get a pix from that day in how she was dressed up and out into the public —
My first response to this entire situation was emotional — absolute gut-wrenching emotion of sadness, anger at her fate, etc. — while I still feel that, it’s not overshadowing every thought I have now —
And to stand back and look at what we know without looking thru eyes that only see the absolute sorrow in this situation —
something ain’t right — from everyone !
Again, I ask the question — If Morgan were your child and been missing all this time — and you believe she is alive — do you continue to “wait” on LE to “break the case” and wait until there is enough evidence for an arrest, or do you release what you know, doing it legally, to try to get your child back ?
When I say “do it legally” — I don’t think you can take a full page ad in the paper and say: John Doe, living at 123 Main St., anywhere USA took Morgan Dana Harrington on Oct 17th 2009 and has kept her locked in his basement since then …
But I can also tell you, no hesitation whatsoever, if I thought I knew and had “inside’ info to back it up as to who took my child — I’d be in their face every day of their life until they gave her back — and if they had me arrested, I’d call a presser, as J2K calls ‘em and state: I was arrested because I believe John Doe took my child and I have been in John Doe’s face demanding he give her back and he got tired of it and filed a harrassment charge — it gets it in the public ….

Monday, Jan. 25, 2010 (10 p.m.)
“Earlier this evening, Virginia Tech Police requested assistance in identifying a person involved in two incidents that occurred on Monday afternoon on the Virginia Tech campus. Upon receipt of the community notice, several persons contacted police and provided information. Based on that information, Virginia Tech Police have identified and located the subject in question and made contact with him.
“Virginia Tech Police are continuing the investigation and assisting the individual in question. There is no known threat to the community and the subject is now at an off-campus location. Virginia Tech Police greatly appreciate all of the assistance provided by the community that aided the quick resolution of this incident.”

There was also a police report of several thefts from a dorm, but nothing violent and it sounds like some of the students were in their rooms asleep. I can post if anyone is interested.

I know exactly where Anchorage Farm is located, as I have been there twice visiting a (male) friend who lived there. This was, however, many years ago.
It is a very, very large parcel of land. Near the top (but still visible from the road) is a very large, stately old home.

I have a sick feeling and I apologize for sounding insensitive to anyone’s death. I am so emotionally involved in this case and feel so deeply for the Harrington family that I posted this immediately after I saw it. I am praying for whomever it is. I am a Virginia native and have always felt safe. I read the GIFT of FEAR and I have always followed the philosophy of that book. However, with the recent reports on the news, I am beginning to wonder WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON? My dear mother, (who passed just a year ago, and I am still mourning her and missing her), would say “These things have always gone on, it is just we hear about them more today…via tv, radio, internet, etc. Don’t be afraid to live your life, just be aware of your surroundings and gut feelings.” My son, who is 24, has called me “paranoid” and I am sure it is because he has a false sense of safeness, growing up in a really small town. YOUNG people…please listen and think, be careful…and even if you are…just sometimes that is not enough. I grew up in Tidewater, VA Beach – Newport News, Norfolk area. Lot’s of crime, but I always felt safe. My husband grew up in a small town of about 9,000. In his town, a young high school student was rapped and murdered in her house after returning from school during daylight hours. The doors were unlocked and he just walked in (it was just someone passing through town; no one knew him). He used to laugh at mean locking doors during the day time and even locking my car doors (before auto lock) whenever I got out of the car, just to get a coke from 7-11 or whatever. Crime can happen anywhere to anyone. Please get THE GIFT of Fear and read it. Morgan you are in my prayers.

I don’t know about criminal cases — I know in “civil” cases (cases for money) an attorney can direct his client not to answer a question, but if the other side still wants the witness to answer, they can have a hearing where they ask the court to make a ruling as to whether or not the person should answer, if the judge feels it’s a legit question, he/she will direct the witness to answer –
Again, I have no knowledge whatsoever about criminal cases — if a person is asked a question — person not charged w/ crime — person has lawyer, lawyer directs person not to answer — can a judge either direct the person to answer or not ???
Someone on the other thread also brought up the fact of taking the evidence to a grand jury — if the FBI is involved, this might be a federal case, and they can take it before a federal grand jury —

Albemarle County Police will not say if Virginia State Police have been asked to help investigate the reports.

The body of a blonde woman clad in dark clothing has been found at a southern Albemarle County farm, several miles from Charlottesville, according to a reliable source. With no blonde persons missing from the Charlottesville-Albemarle area other than 20-year-old Morgan Dana Harrington, whose October 17 disappearance from a Metallica concert touched off a national hunt for her abductor, attention turns to that case.
According to a Hook reporter now on the site, Albemarle Police have created a human cordon at the driveway leading to the Red Hill-area property where the body was spotted. Police Lt. Todd Hopwood, spokesperson for the Department, citing concerns about harmful speculation, declined to offer any information or to answer questions at this time.
The site appears to be part of Anchorage Farm, a 542-acre tract of cattle and hay pastures owned and occupied by David & Nancy Bass. The farm has been nominated for the National Register of Historic Places.

Following is a cut-and-paste article from Charlottesville’s “The Hook”. Readers, please note that the first sentence includes the words “…according to a reliable source”. The “source” is unnamed.

The search for Morgan Harrington was arguably the biggest story of 2009, with the Virginia Tech education major’s face appearing on everything from pizza boxes to the cover of People magazine. The plight of her parents drew the attention of the father of abducted teen Elizabeth Smart; and when a professional search organization announced a chance for the public to join the search, 1,600 volunteers signed up.
As it turned out, parents Dan and Gil Harrington had to face the prospect of Christmas without their daughter as well as a new life as just a three-person family including their son Alex. Their steadfast desire to find the daughter, who was last seen walking “wobbly” across a parking lots and hitchhiking on a bridge, meant a $150,000 reward, a website, and steady grind of media interviews including appearances on national television programs such as Nancy Grace, Good Morning America, and the Today show.
But on the day of this spine-chilling discovery, they could not immediately be reached for comment.

Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney Denise Lunsford has also arrived at the crime scene.”
