Morgan Harrington Murder: Rumors Of A Suspects Arrest

Posted by BOC Staff | Alex Harrington,Amy Melvin,Dan Harrington,Gil Harrington,Morgan Harrington,Murdered,Sara Snead | Thursday 28 January 2010 3:11 pm

Charlottesville, VA– This afternoon, originating on a VT Athletics Site rumors clogged the web that a suspect was placed under arrest for the murder of Morgan Harrington. After my 20th comment in 10 minutes and 12th email inquiry about it, I went to the source.

Crime scene

..There has been no arrest. It is an unfounded rumor and I have no idea how or where it started. I can only assume it stemmed from the fact that we completed our investigation of the crime scene at Anchorage Farm early this afternoon, I guess I will probably have to put out an email this afternoon..”

– Corrine Geller, PR Manager for VSP to Blink

As exclusively reported yesterday on blinkoncrime.com, it is expected that the  and VSP upcoming conversations with those on the list with permission to hunt on Anchorage Farm, will propel the investigation into the murder of Morgan Harrington quickly.

However, Virginia State Police are not discussing whether or not they have a person of interest or suspect in this case.

There is however, unreleased new information and new evidence gleaned from the crime scene. VSP will not disclose what personal effects were found with Morgan’s remains at this time.

The viral arrest rumor was not the only odd occurrance today.

In what appears to be an unrelated coincidence, an explosive device was detinated on the train tracks close to James Madison University this morning. A nearby dorm has been evacuated in connection with materials found at the scene, and a criminal investigation has been launched by the ATF.

JMU is the school several of Morgan’s friends attend, and from where the group departed to attend the Metallica Concert that fateful night of October 17, 2009.

Check back to blinkoncrime.com for updates to this developing story.

I deal with free speech issues everyday. LE might request but can not compel silencing of free speech. Libel and slander issues are an entirely different matter, which fall under civil jurisdiction. It might be possible to get a court order even under seal…but that would be pretty official and take time.

I would appreciate it if we kept LE snark off the board. If there is a specific issue, than reference it and the source. Being critical for the sake of being critical is counter productive and I am pro LE.

Not saying you won’t hear me say an occasional wth, but for the most part, I feel strongly we need to support them.

It smells bad in here today. At first I just thought it could be me the one with the crazy ideas about conspiracies, LE-friendships cover-ups, corruption issues, and strange family ties.

I thought – just too many strange coincidences in this case. And very good, experienced LE officers involved, using new tactics to find and send in jail the perp/s.

And now? Blink, I know you are a great professional, but honestly – today it doesnt look good.

Deleting comments about that “circle” all over the web, including the red hook comments board, just to try to clean up “a great honest guy that committed suicide because he had cancer?”

  5. bluewillow says:

I have just mainly been a lurker all through this case but here’s some questions I keep thinking about… Could Morgan have crossed the bridge to use the ATM machine to get the money to buy another ticket (or to try to), and then headed back towards JPJA? And been waylayed on her way back through the RV area by someone who had been watching her? Her purse and cellphone being lost in the struggle, or thrown out, right there?

Secondly, I keep coming back to that big green shop building, mainly because the property it sits on seems to have a straight, clear shot to the farm’s property line which Morgan was not far from, and also because it would seem likely to be a deserted location at night, where one would not likely be spotted. What is this building used for? Who uses it/works there/has access to it? Are vehicles kept inside, if so, what kind? Is it possible Morgan was taken to the building and assaulted/killed there and her body later removed to the field? (Sorry, it’s so horrible to think of these things, I hate to even say it.)

Whether the building was involved or not, it would seem like the most likely point of entry right through there.

Anyways, sorry if these have been discussed and discounted, I’m no sleuth, just thought I would ask and add my 2, no 1cents worth, lol.

As someone who lives in “the sticks”… I’m well aware of how easy it is to hide a vehicle on back roads. Mr. Bass even admitted that there are sometimes people who hunt his property without permission. They have to park somewhere, right? This happened in October.. when does hunting season open there? If the perp is a “hunter”… he could tell family/roommatesthat he was going hunting or “scouting for sign” without raising a red flag. If he owns a pickup with an ATV on the back (totally common), he could drive around any of those back roads without raising an eyebrow at 4:30 in the morning. If he headed out a bit before sunrise (like hunters do), he’d be pulling off in the dark. Body wrapped in tarp, strapped to back of ATV… he heads into the woods just as light is coming up- so he could see. How many cars would he pass on those roads that early in the morning? None? Maybe one? This would be far less “impossilble” than people seem to think. IMO, it’d be FAR more impossible for someone to take her from the concert, kill her, and return to the arena clean, and acting “normal”. Now thats almost impossible. That would have to be completely planned and pre-meditated. The only way that happened is if someone MH “knew” has intimate knowledge of the farm roads and property- owns a pickup and an ATV. Theres is no way someone carried a body that far on foot in the dark. No way she walked in there with someone. Even forcibly, the perp would be taking a huge chance in an uncontrollable environment- in the dark. You might not even find your way back to your vehicle when its that dark. Nope. This guy picked her up hitch-hicking… things spiralled out of control… and he sat awake all night trying to figure out how he was going to get away with it. The only other way I could see the poor girl getting there, was the “she broke free and ran as far as she could” theory. Then the perp would have had to have taken her to the neighboring area somewhere. Lets just hope the guy runs his mouth, left DNA, or someone comes forward who passed a vehicle in the early morning mid-October. The only thing that still perplexes me is the purse, and the cell-phone with no battery being where it was.

I’m sure many of you have clicked on the photo link, but the recent ariel plane shot of the her triangular location on Anchorage Farm (http://www.readthehook.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/cover-foundmorgan-aerial2.jpg) is extraordinarily helpful in gleaning how isolated it was, but also how it appears that jutting over the field to the left (from Red Hill Road) would be the most sensible access point – it’s clear from this pic that the Blandemar subdivision is further away and over obstructive terrain.

That said, if she was taken there in late October, the hay would be waist-high and a vehicle would certainly leave a clear trail frim the road to the ultimate location – hell, even walking would.

Anyone think the body was moved from somewhere else once winter set in and any field growth in the area was completely matted down by the elements?

She then left to use the facilities at the RV park . She either knew they were there or someone in the lineup told her about them…”

Mr. Speaker, I believe the portable potties were on the far side of Lannigan Field. It would be completely illogical for her to blow past security and hike across two parking lots to use the comode. Plus, as a woman, I can attest that dark, dank, disgusting, sinkless outdoor bathrooms are completely undesirable, and only sought out when there is a True Need To Go/No Other Options.

MH was last seen at Copeley Bridge around 9:20-9:30 (supposedly HH), then police say her cell phone was “turned off” at 9:30. This would tell me that the perp would have had to either almost instantaneously subdued her… or somehow forced her to turn it off (gunpoint?) Why else would she turn it off or remove the battery? If he did it himself… he would have had to wipe prints off the phone and bag (unless LE HAS prints from it).

Each day I hope I have something to add which contributes and helps to solve this, but there is no way that I can compete with the brilliant minds on this blog, so I just wanted to chime in as a participant. I was so devastated to learn Morgan had passed and I desperately want her killer found. I just read justiceformorgan’s theory that perhaps she had someone offer her a ticket to get back in, which changed her mood as she went with them to the car. That theory makes sense to me and would explain some things, such as her mood change, and perhaps one of them offered to hold her purse for her and altered the contents on the way? You all just amaze me, and I can’t believe how Blink attends to all of these cases each day.

  18. I know I read an article – like an official news report – from very early on, that Morgan’s group stopped in Crozet and that HER car was left THERE. That (maybe DC? drove another one to “wherever”) It had to have been from a link from this site, as I know absolutely nothing about this computer or other sites. Has this been debunked or forgotten? So,(if so) they may really not have gone to the concert – but to some party? At any rate, Iv’ always had a bad feeling about this group and their loyalty to Morgan. I really mean this, and from the very beginning.

K, finally figured out who GRH is. This seems like someone, based on appearances, Morgan may interact with – comes across to me, as non threatening and appears to be close to Morgan’s age (I know, he’s 28). IMO, he fits the profile.

His home location is terribly close to where she was found and his work location is closer to the arena..hmmmm.

Is he related to the previous owners of the farm where Morgan was found (seen this rumor floating around)?

Insession posts a remuor which says that he bragged that he picked up a blond girl to someone that night and that he wasn’t returning her until he “got some”?

Did he work that day and if so, what hours?

    Did he attend that concert?

    Does he have an alibi?

A local woman is stating on another discussion board that word in her town is that a young man (a local there) told friends that on the night of the Metal* concert, he picked up a blonde, female hitchiker and wasn’t going to let her go until he got something. I understand that his allegations were reported to LE (I am NOT confirming this, just passing on info from another message board). This young man (28 yrs old) had several runins with LE before and is believed to now be in police custody charged with a weapons violation. Very interesting in deed. I’m still wondering what happened to ring around the rosies. What’s this world coming to?

    >>DNA will be hard, unless it is hair.

somebody correct me if I am wrong, but I’m fascinated by all the latest science and read over the summer — before Morgan — to the effect that DNA is found in the nucleus of the cell — all they need is one cell, which they then can grow replica DNA and snatch the bad bad guy — if there was a struggle and she has anything under her nails — I don’t know about — sorry, Morgan — body decomp — do fingernails decompose ? But if she scraped him, his DNA is under her nails — also, I read somewhere (sorry, no link, Blink) but that she was only partially skeletolized ??? If they found her clothes, the dna may still be there — for example, if he was sweatin’ and got near her — etc.

I don’t know if any of that is true, but it’s my understanding that is true —

    anybody know better ?

  28. jen says:

Apparently he’s been in the jail since Oct 28th, 2009 for the weapons charge. 30. Phyl says:

    Add on to #1094

To me, if true, that would explain how LE’s public inquiry into sightings of Morgan hitchhiking came seemingly out from left field.

The were informed someone bragged about her hitchiking with them and now they needed some witnesses to tie him down to his story. Ok. I’m logging off for now. Need to attend to a whiney cat. Blink, I’m officially addicted to your site. Please start a podcast too.

    Our beautiful Morgan…

Morgan Dana Harrington The world has lost it’s best hugger. The incomparable Morgan Dana Harrington was torn from us on October 17, 2009. Morgan, age 20, was a shiny, loving, beautiful original. She was very much loved by her family, her friends, and her community, which has now expanded to include much of the world. We cherish the time we had with Morgan and are grateful for the breadth and variety of experiences we were able to share in her tragically abbreviated life.
Morgan was born on July 24, 1989 in Charlottesville, Virginia and died there in October 2009. She was an avid music fan, a champion of children’s rights, and planned a career in education.
To recognize some of Morgan’s passions we ask that, in lieu of flowers, gifts to honor Morgan’s memory be made to the Morgan Dana Harrington Memorial Scholarship at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine or to OMNI Orphan Medical Network International, an organization that provides medical care in Africa. Scholarship donations may be mailed to : Virginia Tech, Attn: Gift Accounting, University Development (0336)Blacksburg, Virginia 24061, and OMNI donations to 6930 Empire Lane Roanoke, Virginia 24018.
Our reconfigured family, Dan, Gil, and Alex plan on honoring Morgan with a Mass 3:30 p.m. Friday, February 5, 2010 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. A reception to celebrate Morgan’s life will follow at the Hotel Roanoke.
We are grief stricken by her death but also lifted by the knowledge that Morgan Dana Harrington was precious to so many and will not be forgotten. She mattered to us all.

Hello: Thanks for the responce to my Comments.
No, I am not in LE.
I have a background in US Law.
If there is car wreck and someone dies. It is very hard to go back to the area and photograph, measure skid marks and look at conditions 3 months later.
I guess, I am looking ahead.
I always believed she was taken against her will. Granny’s statement about the events in the parking area seem to have the most weight.
She did call police as soon as she was aware a crime may have taken place.
This was fresh in her mind.
It easy for a trial lawyer to throw mud during a trial. In this case the court room and jury will be up to their necks in mud. I [and I believe everyone here] would like to see LE and DA convict this person or persons.
Dr and Mrs H need justice.
Ironicly for me the U of Virgina has the finest law school in the USA that is not private. I would have thought that with all of the events in the last decade, that Virgina would be safe and go the extra mile to protect these fine young people.
When I set the bar so high in my mind, it easy for me to be very upset at the way this case has been handled.
I have had my opinion and B allowed me to post.
I do not want to be negative on all of my post.
I will try not to repeat but for this:
1st degree murder is very hard to prove, when you have good evidence.
2nd degree is often pleeded down to a lesser charge.
The community will have so much power that I believe any pleed deal would not be possible.
So, it seems that it will be all or nothing!
I hope that the state provides a strong case.
As much as hate to say it, now that the proper focus is being applied, the last 3 months of LE actions may be too much for a guilty verdict to be reached.
Seems like almost all of the fruit is from the posion tree.

    Lets hope not!

To all locals: I think you are posting very well. Sometimes you may be putting yourself out there, so be careful.
This site is very very good.
The posters are so involved,as is B.

Gee whiz, Skyler, here I sit in Ohio feeling sorry for your dog. Those just weren’t her boyfriends that came calling; they were her friends and she misses them. For several years the little girls in our neighborhood came to get our cock-a-poo, dressing him in baby clothes, strolling him in their baby buggies, taking him home to play with them. Every day he would lie in the sunlight in our front window waiting their arrival. As they grew older, their visits became fewer and fewer, until they stopped completely. But for the rest of his life he spent a good part of each day in the front window, waiting and remembering and, perhaps, dreaming of days gone by. Recently, one of his little playmates, who was in a wheelchair then and today is a grown-up, college educated young lady still in a wheelchair, told her mom that some of her happiest memories are from when the little girls in the neighborhood would first come and get her, then get our Kirby and they’d take those long walks in the sun.

Anyhow, I hope your border collie finds a playmate. She needs one!

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – The Richmond medical examiner has ruled Morgan Harrington’s death a homicide, but is still trying to determine how she was killed.

The 20 year old Virginia Tech student disappeared in October at a Metallica concert in Charlottesville. Her remains were found on an Albemarle County farm off Route 29 last week.

The family plans to honor Morgan this Friday with a mass at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Roanoke at 3:30 p.m.

  40. Just Desserts says:

Don’t wish to be a thread hog, or to unnecessarily repeat something said earlier, but I can’t get the site to update or refresh for me, so posting this blind– apologies if needed!

The trouble with spinning around in a gerbil wheel is when old ideas that we haven’t been able to just wad up and throw out instead get caught up in the framework and flutter about and occasionally slap me in the head. One such idea that keeps whacking me lately is the old business about no photos of Morgan or any of her posse from the day of the concert.
I’d always thought that LE was lyi. . ., umm, stretching the truth a bit in claiming that no photo documentation existed of that group of people in attendance at JPJ on Oct. 17th— yet LE claimed to be satisfied that they had been present. I thought, security cam tapes, videos shot during the show, cell phone pics. . . c’mon, they’ve squeezed pictures from the friends, from folks in the crowd, they’ve got a pile of photo evidence and are just saying this so that anyone who might have hijacked Morgan from her date with Metallica might relax about showing up on film looking like Snidely Whiplash.
But you know what: I’m starting to believe them—LE, that is.
And you know what else? Of all the improbabilities associated with this case that we’ve been invited to believe—Morgan leaving before Metallica’s set for reasons unknown/unexplained . . . her out-of-character invite to an unfamiliar middle-aged guy and her kicking him when he won’t go with her . . . her casual decision to leave the scene, just “find a way” to get to an unspecified, distant place, maybe by hitchhiking. . . the notion that a predator happened by at just the right moment to snatch her. . . – perhaps MOST IMPROBABLE to me is the concept that this crew of kids came from afar to this big deal concert and no one brought a camera. . .other than Morgan’s, which is inconveniently MIA.
As we used to say in days of old, “GIVE ME A FAT FREAKIN’ BREAK!!”
Morgan’s crowd spend half their lives “on camera.” Every get-together, every party they’ve got cameras in each other’s faces. Candid shots, posed shots, preppy, campy, vampy shots. But, sorry; none that day, not picture one.
You know what Sherlock Holmes said about the “the dog that didn’t bark in the night”—the remarkable thing was precisely that the dog didn’t.
So zero pictures from the day Morgan went missing sounds, IMO, rather incredible, and suggests a concerted suppression of evidence. To me, it smacks of weaselly legal advice to “the friends” to say or turn over as little as possible in the absence of warrants or subpoenas. And, for the moment, if we take Lt. Rader’s statements at face value, it seems to have helped to keep the whole picture of that group’s day so fuzzy that LE can only seem unduly clueless about entire aspects of the case.
But then I wonder: what if a photo of them should turn up? Or two? Or a few? At what point would this kind of cunning, clubby, “No Fear because No Snitching” picture suppression morph into criminally chargeable Hindering of Prosecution, or worse?
Just some thoughts rattling around in my busy gerbil wheel.

I personally believe it’s like wearing a target and carrying a bullhorn. Where I live that would not be accepted at all. No one should know you’re are CC Concealed Carry.
    Makes sense, doesn’t it?

Best advice: know the laws, very well. Get licensed and practice weekly until you’re an expert. I’d say 100% COM is ‘expert.’

Ok, LOL now…you had me at TMJ:)))

    Agreed on both counts.

RE: Chad: Just checking in–How is your dad doing? I hope he’s healing well. You know you have the caring and support of all your BOC buds here…

RE: Frank Speaker, 2/2, 8:56am: I won’t re-post it all here, but I think you’re general analysis is solid.

“S Jones — what do you think UVA police intentionally covered up? You must have some specifics in mind for that type of accusation.”

Like you, redly, I’d be most interested to hear what S Jones specifically believes has been covered-up by the UVAPD. Such an allegation is not insignificant.

RE: Word Girl: A belated Feliz Cumpleanos (Happy Birthday!)…and we’re relieved that you’re ok following your scary Julia Childs evening.

RE: skyler, 2/2, 11:25am, re: Celtic Woman at JPJ on 2/19–I was thinking of going to that show, as well! [Have never seen them live; just on DVD/PBS.] If I decide to go, I will definitely let you know. [B, I'll take skyler's email addy.] And no worries; (redaqcted)

BTW, skyler, you also said “I look at the measure of a person by their heart, by their spirit —” Me too…and the measure of your spirit, as telegraphed by your posts, tells us all of us here at BOC that you are a person of GREAT heart!

  45. Enquirer says:

#1080 – Please let me clarify – I apologise if my initial post was not clear in whom I was referring to. This is the last time I will discuss this aspect of the case.

The 44yr old R.S.O. (Staton) was incarcerated during Morgan’s disappearance. I only commented on this inidividual as allusions were being made that he could be the ‘kickee’.

G.R.H. was incarcerated shortly after (11 days but processing began in advance of this date) MH’s disappearance on unrelated weapons charges – he has a history of many things, but one of those being hunting related offences. G.R.H remains incarcerated currently and will do so for the next 4 years. He has come in conversations due to his notoriety around the area (I think many would like to see him get ‘back door parole’), reported comments he had made to friends and rumours of his new ‘roomie’ using ‘info’ as a bargaining chip. He is not currently a suspect in this case.

As I mentioned earlier, I believe it to be counter productive to continue discussing these 2 individuals and I will discontinue doing so. I hope this clears up any confusion. Apologies.

    Campus police.
You tell me how you lock the door on a young girl!
Tell me if there are camera’s and she is walking. Who is watching the camera feeds.
How hard would it be to radio a Campus officer and have them go pick her up, offer assistance?
Statements have been made about people working the door letting people back in for cash.
Where was securiy on the parking lot.
How many cars could have been broken into.
and list goes on on and on.
Campus Police covering up with the intent to keep the media out and preserve they public’s impression of the place where they send their children.
    How about this one:
    This a public relations nightmare!
In a few years they will pay out at least 10 million in settlements.
    Then ask the question.
I am a big boy, do not try to shut me up!
It may bit you and who ever you are trying to protect in the butt!
