Morgan Harrington Murder: Rumors Of A Suspects Arrest

Posted by BOC Staff | Alex Harrington,Amy Melvin,Dan Harrington,Gil Harrington,Morgan Harrington,Murdered,Sara Snead | Thursday 28 January 2010 3:11 pm

Charlottesville, VA– This afternoon, originating on a VT Athletics Site rumors clogged the web that a suspect was placed under arrest for the murder of Morgan Harrington. After my 20th comment in 10 minutes and 12th email inquiry about it, I went to the source.

Crime scene

..There has been no arrest. It is an unfounded rumor and I have no idea how or where it started. I can only assume it stemmed from the fact that we completed our investigation of the crime scene at Anchorage Farm early this afternoon, I guess I will probably have to put out an email this afternoon..”

– Corrine Geller, PR Manager for VSP to Blink

As exclusively reported yesterday on blinkoncrime.com, it is expected that the  and VSP upcoming conversations with those on the list with permission to hunt on Anchorage Farm, will propel the investigation into the murder of Morgan Harrington quickly.

However, Virginia State Police are not discussing whether or not they have a person of interest or suspect in this case.

There is however, unreleased new information and new evidence gleaned from the crime scene. VSP will not disclose what personal effects were found with Morgan’s remains at this time.

The viral arrest rumor was not the only odd occurrance today.

In what appears to be an unrelated coincidence, an explosive device was detinated on the train tracks close to James Madison University this morning. A nearby dorm has been evacuated in connection with materials found at the scene, and a criminal investigation has been launched by the ATF.

JMU is the school several of Morgan’s friends attend, and from where the group departed to attend the Metallica Concert that fateful night of October 17, 2009.

Check back to blinkoncrime.com for updates to this developing story.

I remember that the light always returns, it cannot help but return. Wil the light of my life return soon? I cannot imagine that all the water of Morgan’s potential is to run down the drain and be wasted. Can it really play out like that?

    Observer,
Thanks for clarifying the definition of homicide and murder. I was just about to take that daunting task upon my onion-steeped brain. I think your quote from Steve Thompson, posted at Associated Content in 2006 was very well stated, even though he didn’t define the legal terms, he did describe the different takes on “guilty mind” and “guilty act.”

I only wish you would have made that attribution. You’re a smart lady and I saw that you used quote mark’s for Steve’s definition, but mistakes happen and, and the main thing is we have a good understanding–and a quest for more legal-term study!

Not trying “catch you out” but many of us research the same words and questions from time to time.
Thankfully, no one holds all the cards!

On a serious note, a Tip of the Hat to the journalist putting out something worthy of the attention-to-detail Morgan’s case receives –
    Ladies and gentlemen: Courteney Stuart.

A skilled writer, for sure. But the mark of a truly good journalist is the ability – matched with the empathy – to get quotes like this:
    From: http://www.readthehook.com/blog/index.php/2010/02/01/multiple-riddles-harringtons-body-creates-new-mysteries-angles/

“While (Gil) remembers Morgan’s radiant beauty in life, she has memorably discussed the beauty she saw even in her daughter’s “lovely bones” and explains her decision to view images of her daughter’s remains.
“If Morgan’s bones are around, it is my duty— my right— to see them,” she says. “It is my honor.”
And, she notes, Morgan’s death is not the first terrible loss with which she’s coped. When her sister died at home following an illness, Gil says she did not want her body to be “whisked away.” Instead, she recalls, she laid beside her “as she stiffened and turned to alabaster.”
She knows this is not the American way to cope with death, and credits time spent living among other cultures, including five goodwill medical trips to Africa, for giving her an appreciation for life as well as death.
“You don’t pretty it up,” she says. “You look at it.”
As the investigation moves forward, she says, she will stay focused on keeping Morgan’s memory alive rather than on revenge or anger.
“That kind of emotion is like acid in a person; it chews you up,” she says. “Punishment is not mine to give.”

I just saw this story online that her death was ruled a homicide. It seems to me like this should have been common sense since she was young and healthy and disappeared under such shady circumstances.

I am no detective however, although I was related to a career officer, but it seems like a lot of things with this case make no sense, starting from how she left and got outside the arena and how the friends drove her car and just left and I can go on and on.

He stated Morgan bent her arm and said to him “Let’s go” which I have a really hard time believing. Maybe HE was the one who grabbed Morgan by the arm and said “Let’s go” when INSIDE the arena and that is how Morgan ended up outside. Did someone posing as security grab her by the arm and escort her outside where she would be vulnerable and then follow her out a few minutes later? Is that how she ended up outside and sustained the cut on her face? If she was going to the washroom by herself, it is conceivable it could have happened this way given her size. I’m sure someone would have seen something if this happened however if the concert was just starting perhaps there were areas in which she was walking where there weren’t people around. I don’t know where the washrooms were in relation to her seat or if all exit doors had crowd control on them. Anyway just another thought.

They may be saying that she was accidently killed during some other “felonious act” (kidnapping?, robbery?, some type of drug activity?)

Guys- there is a difference between manner of death classification and what someone would ultimately be charged with. I do not think there will be anything less than a murder charge for starters.

Is there any possibility that the person who committed this crime may have purposefully placed Morgan in an open field because they wanted and thought she would eventually be seen/found?

I have absolutely no farming knowledge. When I think of an open field with grass waist high, then, I also might think that the grass would die in the winter or be cut eventually.

It just seems that the perp would have taken more care to conceal her body if he did not want her discovered. (..unless he was in a big hurry and feared he might be seen).

There just seems to be something that is amiss about the discovery location….something not adding up, IMO.

  22. starbucks says:

I hate to speculate, but based on the Virginia Felony Homicide Statute, it’s sounding like someone gave/sold her some illegal drugs, she OD’ed and she was dumped on the farm.

Again, this is just speculation based upon the ME’s finding and the Virginia Felony Homicide Statute cited above.

    I could be wrong.

  23. starbucks says:

It’s possible that the ME uses the term “homicide” to include all murders — the dictionary definition rather than the statutory definition. Does anyone know?

If she was going to the washroom by herself, it is conceivable it could have happened this way given her size. It has been reported she had been drinking and appeared “wobbly” so she may have felt she was being “kicked” (there’s that word again) out of the arena for that reason and may not have resisted as a result (also may not have resisted due to shock over what was happening). I’m sure someone would have seen something if this happened however if the concert was just starting perhaps there were areas in which she was walking where there weren’t people around. I think that Observer and others answered your question re: homicide vs. murder. But since your question came so close to the ME’s announcement this afternoon, I wanted to point out that the ME uses the term homicide when a person has died “at the hands of another”, regardless of intent or what the police find etc. The ME can’t really say whether or not a homicide = murder (homicide w/ criminal intent). That’s LE’s job to piece together and then charge the person accordingly. The police haven’t said anything about intent so I guess Morgan’s case isn’t officially a murder investigation…yet.

  27. starbucks says:

They may not have the answers:

“A spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office said the office is not yet able to release information on how Harrington was killed.

Forensic experts say it could take weeks, or longer, to make that determination because of the decomposition of her body over the past three months. If, as her family believes, her body was left in the hayfield the night she disappeared, it has endured warm and cold weather, rain and snow storms and possibly the activity of animals and insects.

All of those factors could “make it a lot more difficult to determine the cause and manner of death,” said Emil Moldovan, an adjunct instructor of criminal justice at Radford University and former death investigator in the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.

For instance, Moldovan said, if Harrington were bludgeoned or shot to death, that might be readily apparent to examiners, but if she were strangled, there would be little evidence outside the possible fracture of the tiny hyoid bone in the neck. The skeletal and tissue remains also might not show any sign of a stabbing.”

  28. MsL says:

justiceformorgan-With regard to restroom facilities at JPJ, they are numerous and a short walk from each seating section will bring one into view (universal symbol for restroom posted over the doors.) These restrooms are located in a basically circular interior corridor on each level immediately outside the entrances to the seating areas. Some of the facilities are no more than 5 to 8 stalls, some are huge, probably with 20 or more stalls and also have comfortable chairs for sitting. Someone speculated that Morgan left the arena because lines were long between sets. This reasoning does not hold water (no pun intended.) Any attempt, imo, to reach the outside porta-potties would take much longer than standing in line waiting to use a well-lit bathroom with mirrors and handwashing facilities. Now I was not at the Metallica concert, but for every other event I have attended at the arena, the entrances/exits are always manned during the events. For some reason, our seats seem to always be located nearest what’s referred to as the student entrance for sporting events. This entrance faces directly onto Massie Road. I have always seen 2 people manning that door, with a uniformed person (think a police officer, but haven’t paid close attention) standing by. Since it seems Morgan left between performances, before the main act, I just cannot imagine there were so many people leaving that she could have been hustled out a door without being noticed unless she was offering no resistance. Others have stated that warnings are given that you will not be able to re-enter if you leave prior to the end of a show. I don’t know whether or not that is always true. Our family mantra is that we buy a ticket for the entire game/show, and we just do not leave early. Obviously, something happened that caused her to end up outside, but I just do not believe the need for a bathroom was that reason. Could she have walked outside to smoke, possibly, but the designated smoking areas are on the same level as where her seats were located. I’m not familiar with those areas, but from what I have heared, they are outside areas, but do not have free access to the parking lots. If I understand correctly, smokers actually have to come back into the arena in order to leave the facility from the smoking areas. Someone who is actually familiar with these areas might want to comment. I believe that she either left the arena to meet someone, was coerced outside by someone from within, was ejected which I think LE has denied, or she was disoriented and didn’t heed warnings that she would not be able to return. I agree with others who have posted, whatever caused her to leave could very well be key to solving this mystery.

Does Virgina allow the judge to give the jury the option of murder 1 and 2.
If the perp traveled to the arena knowing she would be there murder 1.
If it was random without a link to other crimes murder 2.
    Weapon will also be considered.

I guess I’m alone in totally being able to picture Morgan playfully hooking kickee’s arm with a “let’s go” (i.e., let’s blow this Popsicle stand) and (playfully again) kicking at him or even making contact with a light kick after he balked. (Or did she really nail him hard with a kick?) And then later, if that’s our heroine kicking a leg with the four guys, perhaps she is recounting the tale.

I dunno, but to me, it’s feasible that it happened just like the kickee said (embellished a bit for the news or his GF, mebbe).

  32. Frank Speaker says:

Yes the Harringtons are very great people . This is a Greek Tragety . I only come on here to give my amateur input on thoughts about the specifics of what occured and not to get mushy mushy . Thoughts of the day are that MH randomly met someone with not unlike the looks of those in the band . Middle, aged, degenerate, jail bird type ,with a little clump of hair on his chin . Interesting that WT has that appearance , she seemed drawn to that look . I understand that band draws those similiar people . Often they are exactly what they appear to be i would expect . Someone was wondering aloud as to why she was found in the open field . The areal shows the field was actually a closed smaller field surrounded by trees . Going by vehicle that would be where a natural ending would be . Just a little lane to get into this opening . He went over to an edge turned around facing the lane into the spot . If someone on the land were to follow him up in a vehicle the perp would wait for this someone to approach and the perp would take off out the little lane and gone . I expect that MH was left in this little opening as he didn’t want to go into the wooded area at night . Branches can do damage to your eyes . She was not burried as he had no shouvel . The crime was not planned nor was the disposal planned. Someone going to intentionally drop off a deceased victum there would take some planning which would mean they had time to get a shouvel etc .

yoshi is correct — the ME doesn’t decide/announce if it is murder, capital murder, 1st second degree etc. It just determines if it is homicide, suicide, accidental death etc. and then cause of death, time of death etc. What type of crime it is (murder etc) is up to the prosecutor to suggest and then the finder of fact (judge or jury) to decide.

Just a comment about the Wicca references that keep coming up- the date of Morgan’s disappearance is too far away from Samhain (Halloween) to have much ritual significance. Those events are generally communal and planned far ahead of time, AND Wiccans in general, are not bloodthirsty. Now, some other groups are, but I don’t see anything to indicate anything other than an individual acting in an assault and murder, and no dissassociative fugue theory sounds at all plausble to me.

Wow, spent last week in the hospital with a nasty infection, no computer access until last Friday when I got home. Of course, one of the first things I did was log on here, and imagine my shock/horror/sadness/relief/many other feelings when I heard that dear Morgan had been found. I have been trying desperately to catch up on comments, but I went straight to this thread, haven’t read any others that were put up since the 25th.

I’d like to offer my heartfelt condolences to the Harrington family, we were all hoping for a better conclusion than this, I am so sorry.

I apologize if this has been brought up before, but I was wondering if there are facilities at the RV lot to clean up/wash off a vehicle? I don’t see how this BG could have gone where he did on a rainy night without some mud/grass getting on his tires, at the very least. We had a very brutal triple murder in our area a few years ago. The perp turned out to be a 16 year old boy who stabbed his friend and the friend’s parents in the middle of the night. The kid apparently washed up on the way home at a local car wash, so that’s why his mom didn’t see any blood on him. The kid’s dad turned him in after about a month, but had he not, it would still be an unsolved crime. Did Morgan’s BG have to go back to the arena afterwards, so he knew people would see his vehicle and question why it was so dirty. Maybe he hosed it down in the RV lot, cleaned himself up a bit, chucked the purse, and continued with his evening.

The location of the remains, imho, says that it is a local person, familiar with the surrounding farmland, roads, trails, woods. No way an out-of-towner would go off-roading like that in unfamiliar territory, too risky.

The placement in the “meadow-like” area did make me wonder if it was a tragic accident, and she was placed there by someone who cared for her, like she was put in a peaceful setting?

Lastly, in the local murder I mentioned above, the perp’s mom said, in hindsight, she remembered he was throwing up the day after the crime, sick all day. Someone needs to think back to that time and try to recall a friend/family member who may have been very ill a day or two after Morgan’s disappearance.

catching up quick during my break from work –

J2K, I will be singing that song all day … I can see in my mind’s eye the 5th Dimension performing that song — I was a little kid when it came out and had no idea what it meant, but I thought it was so cool —

I am a lofty Libra — which is why I can never make up my mind about who, what, when and how — but I know that eventually these scales will balance and we will have our answers —

I actually was friends once upon a time w/ someone who was very close friends to Elizabeth Kubler-Ross — who wrote the ground-breaking, at the time, book on death, and how the celebration of death — I am part Native American, and in the Native American culture, they mourn birth and celebrate death as a return to Creator —

If Morgan’s mission in this life was to spread light, she more than fulfilled her purpose. Evil tried to extinquish that light, and instead only caused it to glow brighter all around the world.

I am so sorry I can’t be at her memorial on Friday, but with the weather forecast, even if I didn’t have work issues, I may not have been able to make it. But I was thinking last night of what could I add to her memorial when I do go to the C-vlle on the 19th.

I am a “self-proclaimed” artist — meaning, if someone else saw what I do, they may classify it as junk — ha

But I paint animals on rocks — it’s so much cuter than it sounds. My first attempt was my cat Samantha — I found this perfect little rock one day digging in my garden — and it’s absolutely adorable.

We have that picture of Morgan holding “Crazy Dog” — I’m going to paint Crazy Dog and leave him on the bridge, w/ a little “2 4 1″ painted on his tummy.

I wholly agree w/ Word Girl — we are a magnificent group of diverse people, who don’t see ourselves as diverse — we see each other as beautiful lights come together for a single cause — and for that, Morgan, I thank you —

And Hummingbird, I am so glad to know I’m not the only one w/ dishes in the sink — I have a dishwasher, but it’s an “apt size” one — you can’t use plates bigger than 10 inches — well, all of my plates are bigger than 10 inches — I finally had to break down and do dishes last night as my cupboard was bare, too — ha

And I’d better scoot back to work….

Just a thought as to why MH might have went outside (other than she was escorted). Being someone who partied as a youngster- Maybe she was a bit too intoxicated.. head spins…nasuea..etc- It was probably hot and crowded in the arena. She told her friends “I’m going to the bathroom” which in reality she “needed a minute” to go get some air. I’ve left a party or bar, etc., many times in my life to go outside for some fresh air.. try to “sober up” when I suddenly got a little too intoxicated. Maybe she tried the restroom… it was crowded, she fell and hit her chin, started to cry a bit (embarrassment, whatever)… but decided to go outside for air.. to be alone for a minute and gather herself. Maybe after she did that she did feel much better- hence the reportedly “normal sounding” phonecall to her friends. Out of embarrassment or not wanting to sound like a “lightweight” (kids do this) she didnt mention her “moment” to her friends.

I think we’ve got one now, WG – and new readers can learn it/know it/live it by checking out your post @ Feb. 3, 2010, 1:25 a.m. (BST).

Thanks for singing your sweet thoughts across the planet to us. I would clink Goblets to an Oyster Bay pinot with you any time.
As would Blink (of that I’m quite sure).

roageo re: body’s location (February 3, 2010 at 4:15 am)
you should read Rob’s post from Feb 2 around 7 p.m. He offers an amazing, in-depth assessment/profile of the possible killer, in-line with what you’re steppin’ in.

I’d also like to point out that it’s curious there was no notable matted-down trail seen last fall (that we’re aware) through an adjacent hayfield toward the tree patch – regardless of the direction the perp brought her in from… there was apparently no mark associated with their significant movement detected by the highland residents and workers bordering the property.

Or, one has to think this degenerate would at least have been *concerned* with leaving such a visible mark in a central valley. I mean, why not drive her to/deposit her in a place that can be reached without tromping through a vast stretch of tall, open vegetation, risking incriminating exposure? That area of the county offers deep forests, mountainous terrain, and secluded access points to water…

I’m thinking she may have been deposited there more recently, once the fields were dead and barren. Still stumped on this one, though: Why?

Has it been confirmed by LE that the purse strap was broken? I only remember hearing them say in the beginning that nothing was unusual about it.

P.S. Sorry if any of my questions are old news- I will tell ‘ya I spent 8-10 hours reading these boards before I ever posted… and didnt see answers or confirmation to some of my questions. I am trying to gather the extremely few CONFIRMED facts to formulate a hypothesis… you start getting into rumors and “he said, she said” and you’ll get further off track. The same goes for my question pertaining to JPJ security noticing her injury/condition upon trying to re-enter the arena. I’m trying to confirm her “stste-of-mind” at that point. If someone who knows could take 2 seconds and answer that for me, I’d greatly appreciate it.

I posted on this about a week ago RE two possible scenarios…

i cant get away from a couple of things RE kickee…

1-outside waiting for friends(with no re-entry, he was never in concert–possible he NEVER entered concert, MAY have NEVER had tix)
2-friends of what nature?? Buddys?? Mixed sexes?? GIRLfriend?!?
3-the immediate phone call to GF?!?(others have found this odd) The kick very well could have embarrassed this guy greatly, or pissed him off, or both…The immediate call to GF could have been to expedite HER arrival to confront this “drunk bi***” who just kicked him…?!?

i am not ruling out that a female was involved at least on the periphary…

i also think that a local scalper would have some opportunity in this case:

1-he would not be inside the venue, but on the outer edges of property trying to offload his tix(possibly encountering a wandering Morgan)
2-he would have tix to perhaps persuade Morgan that he could get her back in the venue
3-a built in reason for “hanging out” outside the concert venue
4-while i personally dont think that scalping is the crime of the century, it IS an illegal activity, which makes scalpers criminals to begin with…??

probably going to get raked over the coals on this but until this is solved, arent all things worth checking out??

was it to expedite her arriv

  43. juliemooly says:

From the CBS newsplex in C-ville today, Wednesday: “A Richmond television station is reporting that the medical examiner has ruled Harrington’s death a homicide, but further details on the case have not yet been released. CBS19 spoke to the medical examiner’s office shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday, and officials disputed the report, saying nothing has been released.”
Is this just parsing of words on behalf of the medical examiner’s office, or CBS trying to keep itself in the news, or did the Richmond t.v. station jump the gun/report something not ready for release?

  44. Slowroller says:

last incomplete sentence should be redacted…”was it to expedite her arriv”…apparently i typed that twice??

  45. Frank Speaker says:

If she was lured outside it would have been via cell phone . Now why would the perp leave this tell tale piece of evidence on the scene ?? Or bring it all the way back to the point of abduction after what he did to her .Especially when the phone may have been purposly disabled by him .He seemed to be phone savy . Also her three friends say she left to go to the washroom . Her facebook friends say the same story adding that the washroom was overloaded so she went to use the facilities by the RV lot . Her inside friends called her . She said she couldn’t get back in . Any and all reasons for going outside ,therefore, are nullified are not related to who she met up with .From the point of her trying to get back into the building puts us into a brand new ball game . I just hope LE was not into these conspiracy theories which lead nowhere .Any conspiracy theory i have seen here don’t seem to hold up to logic .

Georgie, glad you are okay. thank you for that story. What an awful decision to make as a parent, to turn your child in, for such a horrendous crime.

    Slowroller,total amateur,

We all have went over every possible scenario we could think of, regarding Morgan finding her way out side. From she was meeting someone, to she was drunk, dizzy, sick, lost her way, was thrown out, someone played a joke on her ect. The reasons are numerous. The conclusions are none, the answer we have come up with to a certainty is -We do not know-.

Your thoughts are welcome and so are your perspectives. Please don’t feel offended if none of the regulars answer, or comment on your theories. We have thought and rethought, and still remain locked to We don’t know.

Been reading here for about 3 years, and have read every single MDH post here (PHEW!) Only weighing in as a fellow Aquarian – maybe there is something to be said about us “hopeless humanitarians” (as Aquarians are so oft be to labeled), after all! Can’t help but wonder if our archetype is simply drawn to stories like these. Regardless, I admire and feel part of this community, even though this is my maiden post… and I just want to think that if something tragic and untoward happened to me or my loved ones, there’d be a community like this one throwing around not only ideas and possibilities, but also the admiration and respect I see here. It takes strength to read and post here, and also to call each other out when merited. Thank you all.
