Morgan Harrington Murder: Harringtons Debut Morgan Rocks

Posted by BOC Staff | Alex Harrington,Anchorage Farm,Dan Harrington,Gil Harrington,Morgan Harrington,Murdered | Wednesday 17 March 2010 12:28 pm

Charlottesville, VA- Continuing the crusade to memorialize their daughter Morgan and keep the public focused on the dangerous killer(s) still at large,  Dan and Gil Harrington will be meeting with media today at 1PM.

The meeting agenda will include the Harrington’s ongoing concerns for womens safety on and off campus, and their fears associated with the fact that there has not been an arrest in their daughters murder to date.

BOCMorganBridgePainting

The Harringtons are also expected to announce MORGAN ROCKS.

In response to a hand-painted river rock, lovingly and generously created and delivered to the Copely bridge by blinkoncrime.com contributor Skyler, containing the phrase “Rock On”; The Harringtons have decided to widen the trend.

MORGAN ROCKS

We are starting a “gathering of rocks” at Morgan’s memorial on

Morgan’s Bridge at Copeley Road on the North Grounds of the University of Virginia. When you come to Charlottesville and to the bridge bring a rock and a prayer to add to the collection. Leave both at the bridge!

Morgan, Gil, Alex and I continue to need your support and prayers as we wait for Morgan’s murder(s) to be brought to justice. Your support in raising society’s awareness of the need to change the culture of acceptance of violence against women and in so doing change the laws that allow these crimes to go unpunished.

Skyler’s slate rock was the first. A beautiful painted slate rock with an image of Anchorage Farm, Tibetan prayer flags and an angel rising to the heavens. Morgan, Rock ON!!!

We will do everything we can to help bring Morgan’s killers to justice.

Fish, thank you for watching the video, I hope that girl is alright-
Cosmo, Thank you for bringing up a way we can help by going back to the beginning- I agree. I am still looking through the videos to try and eliminate and also to see if we missed anything the first time- I also went back through some old posts and found this interesting little bit-

Blink, thinks Morgan may have been brought to AF in a tarp- or perhaps, it was left with Morgan at AF. We left off with our thoughts here, saying it possibly could have been intertubes of tires, ect

Well, it seems at the same time we were questioning whether or not a shirt had been found, I had forgotten, but early on there was a report that a piece of tarp was found by the police at JPJ- Don’t know if it means anything, but I am offering it up for discussion:

I tried to find a link to the entire press conference was unable to locate one. If anyone has a link,I’d appreciate you posting it …

In this link LE states that they have physical evidence, meaning shirt,or blood. I am not sure if he was referring to Morgan’s purse or something more. Blink, do you know?

    Rita, susanm,

I went back and found the article regarding the possible found black t-shirt it was from October 20th

snipped:A job fair was held at John Paul Jones Arena Tuesday. Hundreds of job seekers showed up, but just a few hundred feet away, down in the creek, police probed with batons, trying to find any bit of evidence. Police spent about fifteen minutes looking over a black piece of cloth. We could not confirm exactly what it was, though it looked like a tarp or a T-shirt. Police collected it for further information.

We are all still here Dr. Harrington. I think about Morgan daily. She is in almost every single conversation I have with my friends and family. I even dream of Morgan.

We will not give up on your precious daughter. There is a killer/s on the loose in Charlottesville and he/they must be brought to justice.

Your family has touched all of us and made us aspire to be our brother’s keeper–always. Like so many others have written, they often see women jogging alone–and they worry about them.

I talk with my daughter daily about doing all she can to stay safe in the world. She is going to a concert in May. I asked her to please go with friends and she told me that she would. Also, she said something else to me that gave me pause, She said, “But Mom, Morgan Harrington went to a concert with friends and she still wasn’t safe.”

That’s when I gave her a good lecture on never allowing any of her friends out of her sight–nor should they allow my daughter out of their sight.

We will never stop seeking the murderer/s of Morgan. Never!

I visit this site more than once a day. I retweet all of Gil’s words from the family blog. Your family amazes me with your strength and candor. You are such a wonderful and loving family.

Please, always know that Morgan will never be forgotten. As someone posted, ever since Morgan was found, other missing people have also been found. Natalee Halloway, for instance. I believe that Morgan is helping from the other side. Morgan will help us find out the truth of who did this to her. Her killer/s will NOT get away with it.

I am going back over news articles too. (See above). Couple of things: RMC Events out of, I believe, Richmond, VA was in charge of “so-called security” the evening of the 17th, OCT–Dan Schmitt is President/owner–according to the HOOK article above, Schmitt refused to comment on the case, deferring to arena staff, who also refused to comment at the time. Did Schmitt EVER speak up???? This is what he does: PROVIDES SECURITY FOR EVENTS (some of his peops get a whole 18 hours of training beforehand, too!) Schmitt is on the Private Security Advisory Board (PSSAB) of Virginia for Pete’s SAKE! What does he have to say??? Also, Schmitt appears to be an avid biker.

Also, I know we’ve been here before, but the thought of this 44yo Fredericksburg man, turning his back on Miss M. after she tried to link arms with him, just feels WRONG.

I hope the Harrington family feels reassured today that we will not forget that his beautiful daughter was MURDERED!

    Dr. H,

Another lurker here. . . . I live in C’ville and have a daughters (17 and 10). We’re all thinking of Morgan and want the LE to continue working at full speed to solve her murder. I think about her and her murderer every day. LE will find the person/people who did this. Please take care of yourself, Gil and Alex. I have found that the changing of the seasons is a difficult time for survivors (My brother was killed as a pedestrian many years ago). Time marches on for the survivors but time stands still for the lost loved one. I’m so, so sorry.

We were visiting a large university in NC a few weekends ago and I was again amazed at how unaware most of the students were to their vulnerability to any and all. On one hand I’m glad that they are not paranoid, but on the other hand they need to develop a healthy sense of fear. I think the university administration there and everywhere work hard to promote a sense of security – to the detriment of the women who are at risk.

I think adding a free self-defense course to the 1st semester dorm-life/curriculum might educate both young men and women as to the dangers, but importantly also give them new ways in which they can protect themselves if they find themselves in an unsafe situation.

I agree with others here that any young woman should be safe and secure at any time. And should be able to walk down the street at 2:00 A.M. without a stitch of clothing if they so choose – without molestation – it’s no one’s right to interfere with their individual freedom – but there are too many disturbed people. Students need to be aware of how to protect themselves.

I understand it would be an assumption to look at RMC Events. I know Dan personally and can tell you for sure he wouldn’t cause direct harm to Morgan. Dr. Harrington, Gil and Alex,
Morgan captured our hearts and though we never had the pleasure to meet her, our commitment to her is as strong today as it was the day she was declared missing. Her spirit resides in us, guides us and compels us to find her killers and insure they are punished to the full extent of the law. She is a shining beacon that gives us hope and purpose.

At times my anger overwhelms me, my sadness engulfs me and my helplessness cripples me. Then, I think of Morgan and her shiny spirit and of you, Gil and Alex with your grace and steadfast conviction to honor her memory and prevent such senselessness from occurring again, and I am once again energized. I pick myself up, dust myself off, put on my game face and continue with Morgan’s mission. I am not a master researcher or proficient strategist, but I read each post and I serve as a “cheerleader” to those doing the heavy thinking. My megaphone is at my side and my voice is ready to resound loud and clear as long as you need me.

Dr. Harrington, your family has set a lofty standard for us to follow. Through your actions and Gil’s gut wrenching writings, you are taking us by the hand and leading us through the grieving process. In your grief, you are selflessly reaching out to others to lift their burdens and to insure the safety of their families. You are forging the way for us to see that as single individuals we can make a significant difference, but by bonding together as a team we can create a tidal wave of emotion, enlightenment, education and resolution that will wash away the remnants of long standing social injustice toward women. You motivate me to be a voice, to be a champion, to make a difference. I do this for Morgan, for my 20 year old daughter and for all daughters, sisters and mothers so they may live life to the fullest and fulfill their potentials without fear.

I pray that justice will be served for Morgan and that your family will find peace. J4M

    Dr. Harrington,

I want to join in the chorus of blink readers to let you know that I, too, am here every day trying to think up ways to help find Morgan’s killers. You mustn’t think that we have given up on Morgan, because we surely have not.
Some days I feel like we have reached the limit of what we can learn with the resources we have available. We’ve been digging through online court records and property records, we read archived newspaper articles and look at concert videos over and over again, and we troll facebook and myspace pages looking for connections. But this is the limit, at least for me, of how far I can go to help. Some of us have driven around the Anchorage Farm perimeter taking photos for people who don’t live in the area. I wish there was more we could do, but I don’t know where to start. Like Skyler, I think if we had even one more fact, we could be digging deeper and going in more directions for information.
Just let us know what you would like us to specifically work on and we will be ON IT. I have seen in my short time on blinkoncrime that when we are given a direction to go in we tackle it head on. I know I am willing to.

To PamVA: Thank you so much for your comments! (I remember reading your post this morning about you and “your” little Morgan–it made me smile.) I am so glad that you know Dan. It is great to hear that he is a stand-up citizen. Do you know if he has ever made a public statement regarding Morgan’s disappearance and murder. Could he enlighten us about the security aspects in any way? Maybe if he was shown Dr. Harrington’s message from last night, that would touch his heart and he might be able to shed even a teeny, tiny bit of light. Also, on the RMV website they have some photos from previous events. Any chance he has photos from the 17th? Was he working the event that night? I have read interviews stating that he sometimes does? As far as the bicycle stuff goes, do the employees at RMV ride together–it appears from the website that employee morale is important to Dan.

Thank you again, I am not from your beautiful state, and the input and comment from “locals” is sooooo helpful. Cheers, Sara

While society often blames the victim for violence against them, they also place responsibility on potential victims for their own safety. I think we need to focus on preventing boys from becoming perpetrators. I think it’s easiest and most efficient to get involved in groups that already exist. It seems as though basic parenting skills are lacking in our society, so unfortunately I think schools and after-school programs are needing resources to tackle character education. We have to reach them while they’re young.
I have looked around and found some interesting articles and groups that I am posting links to here. . . but my links seem to be causing the problems for me in posting, so I will just list the organizations I found that instill respect and empathy in young people

    RespectRx

    The Girls and Boys Project

    Draw the Line/Respect the Line

CDC National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, preventing dating violence

    Safe Place.org / Expect Respect

sciencedaily.com Fourth R: Skills for Youth Relationships

NY Times article on teaching empathy in school

    Sexual Assault Resource Agency Charlottesville

United Nations publication on eliminating violence against the girl child
    un.org/womenwatch

Disturbing article (Daily Mail, United Kingdom) on the effects of pornography-watching on boys’ behaviors and their effects on girls (treating girlfriends like sex objects)

I think these can be easily googled since my links aren’t working
    —————————————-

The rain was hard on my “Morgan Rocks” banner so I took it down. I am going to redo parts of it or all of it and get Staples to laminate it for me so it won’t fall apart next time. Also, as soon as Observer gets rocks and posts that she’s placed them on the memorial I will get to photographin’ and postin’ pix!

Oh and another thing, (but I won’t promise I’ll shut up)
Virginia’s judges are political appointees from what I can tell (I’ve never lived anywhere quite like Virginia). We can petition to get THAT changed to an ELECTORAL process, for starters.

Also, we can demand MUCH HARSHER SENTENCES for violent criminals and sex offenders, including first time offenders and juvenile offenders, but ESPECIALLY repeat offenders. (Caps are for emphasis, not shouting, but I feel like shouting when I look through criminal records and see that almost NO ONE does jail time for violent and sex crimes in this area.)

redly: I think you mean me? I’m slightly obsessed with finding her and her group. I only wanted to make a visual, to see her party. There was/is so much “silence”.
We are constantly bombarded with images, photos, videos of other missing children and adults, that I thought that since a photo was not released early on, something was amiss and remember 2 of Blink’s editors did not even believe she made it to JPJA. It always was in the back of my head…Did she make it? Did she have her “friends” by her side, was she escorted out?
My family clammered for the last know picture or video of my sister and we have video of my sister-in-law at my very own daughter’s 5th birthday party the week before she was killed. She threw the party for her! It was a “fish” theme! Even a man in a shark costume came. Anywho, that’s why I am so set upon seeing Morgan. It helps me cope!

FWIW, no I do not think that even if we make Morgan out in one of the videos or stills posted…the, her tragic outcome would have changed. I do hold onto hope that a big lesson learned and we all can pass down, forward, sideway, etc…would be safety is truly in numbers because once you are alone, you become “HIS PREY”! “I PRAY” that this nevers happens again and that her friends are able to heal and lead happy lives.
The Harrington Family are left with memories and yes, “IMAGES”.

Would you like the kids to do a rock for you?
They really red, would be happy too.

    @ Link5150 March 24, 2010 at 9:35 am

I was wondering about precisely the same thing. Neither are there any rumours about a certain person who has been discussed on here. Someone must know about his first victim. Someone went to school with him, he has co-workers. Someone must know his second victim. Someone must know where he was in treatment/jail. He must have some sort of a social life. There is absolutely nothing about him, as if he didn’t exist.

  27. Cat says:

Bless you Dr. Harrington; I do feel your pain.

Readly, video evidence could have been extremely important during the initial phases of this case and may be still beneficial. Her activity up to the point of leaving could indicate a great deal about her mindset, who she interacted with and perhaps even offered a clue as to why she left. The smallest piece of evidence CAN break a case.

If there was video, and it was decided by LE or JPJ not to be released publicly, I feel it would be one of the many travesties of this case.

  28. MsLAL says:

Dear Dr. H., Gil and Alex,

So many of us here feel your frustration, and sometimes the quietness is disturbing and we think that nothing is happening in Morgan’s case. I hope that is not true.

Meanwhile, as you said, there are things we can do to promote the cause of safety for women. Tonight, students on the campus where I work are sponsoring Take Back the Night, and a two-day symposium on sexual assault, focusing on increased awareness of both women and men, and personal responsibility. Several groups have formed on our campus to support these causes, and I can’t help but think that in time, they will make a difference. In my mind, Morgan’s murder seems to punctuate, especially locally, the urgency of getting the word out.

Your heartbreak will never be fully erased, but Morgan’s memory and legacy will give others strength. She and you, the family, have had a great impact on my life, and on so many others, as witnessed here at BOC. God bless you on this difficult journey.

  32. total amateur says:

I understand what everyone is saying about video from inside JPJ not making a difference- but what if there was video of her arguing with her friends? Or being dragged out by security? Or a strange guy following her out? You never know. I think the biggest thing is the fact that authorities are saying that there is NO footage… it is difficult for people to believe. Mix that with virtual silence from LE and such- people start to think someone’s hiding something- or that there’s a “cover up” or “conspiracy” of some sort. I’m not saying that’s what I personally believe, but I understand how people could get that impression.

Until we get some hard facts, or new information- everything is IN PLAY. There is not one single hypothesis or person that can be eliminated right now from what we know to be fact- to me, that’s the most frustrating part. People are trying to go over stuff for the tenth time, seeing if they missed anything. I actually think it’s quite impressive… the raw determination exhibited by people on this site. I applaud all of your efforts and unwillingness to quit. It’s inspiring.

  33. Yoshi says:

Cosmo- about going back to the beginning- I agree.
I really wish that the findmorgan facebook was easily acessible. I came across some snippets of posts just last night that I would have liked to see in greater detail. Some of it is cached while some of it isn’t. I did everything I could think of to to find a loophole. No dice. I wonder if The Harrington’s have considered opening it back up for the lurkers while keeping posting priviledges exclusive for members only. Clearly there are many willing and able to pour over all of the info over there. At the very least it will generate interest that can be transferred to an active forum or group. Anyone know if I can be a member w/ a dummy email address/facebook account? My credibility might look fishy to the admins, but I’m not comfortable using my real name.

  34. anotherB says:

Even though I believe it is essential for universities to provide safe surroundings, I do not think that this would suffice. There are always going to be bad guys, no matter where you are, and, as the Yale murder shows, crimes can even happen in a lab building with limited access.
In the end, it is all down to the individual. If you get separated from your friends, try to find them, and if you are worried someone might not be ok, call an ambulance. Many people believe that they would inconvenience a disoriented person by calling authorities. This is not the case. You do them a favour. If someone is completely drunk, drugged or semi conscious after a fall, s/he needs help. There were two high profile cases in the past months, where someone fell drunkenly into a river and drowned.
I find it absolutely appalling nobody helped Morgan that night. As a matter of fact, I can understand why JPJ doesn’t readmit you once you left. But if they see someone who is bleeding, separated from their friends, lacking warm clothing and who is above all disoriented, they should make sure s/he is safe. Nobody could have foreseen the tragic events that night, but pneumonia, injuries from further falls, an infected wound and being mugged could certainly be consequences to be considered. Morgan talked to a number of people, who must have realized that she was not all right. Nobody intervened. I am talking about making security at a venue responsible for what is happening outside. It is helping someone, one human being the other.
Sorry for ranting. Very bad day.

I have no idea what people think the school should be doing that it isn’t. I think it just may be frustration over the failure to announce an arrest kicking in. I really hope one comes soon, but I do fear that this was a pure stranger abduction with no witnesses — and those are almost impossible to solve without a break with forensic evidence or some lucky break. If your kids would paint me a rock, that would be super.

I want to add that I follow this board so avidly that my family wonders if I do anything else. That has not changed and will not change. I read, I think, I take notes… I haven’t chimed in much because I have nothing new to say, but I am still eagerly reading and thinking. I will not forget.

Seeing as lurkers are being encouraged to post their thoughts, there is one thing that has bothered me for awhile, and was just mentioned again.
Why wouldn’t Morgan have purchased another ticket if she was stuck outside? I understand that there were tickets available. I know her bank account was overdrawn, but I am sure that her friends must have had money or access to it (ATM)I think that if she had explained the situation to her dad over the phone, he would have sprung for a replacement ticket, or offered to pay the friends back.
The fact that she didn’t purchase another ticket, or at least attempt to, by asking her friends to help her out by lending her $, leads me to believe that she either did not want back in, or was kicked out and wouldn’t be given access even with a new ticket. Given that we are being told that she attempted to get back in on multiple occasions, and are being told she wasn’t kicked out either, it makes me wonder if one of these stories is not true. In my mind, the only other possibility is that she did try to get help from the friends and it was not forthcoming, in which case, the conversation with the friends involved more than her saying she was stuck outside and going to call a friend.
If she had the tickets for six months, it doesn’t make sense to me that she would not at least attempt to buy another ticket if she wanted back in, unless she was sure that a new ticket would not gain her entrance.

Total Amateur: RE: #30–here is a link to recent runs made by Albemarle County local fire departments–bookmarked this over the weekend. I have been through this multiple times–maybe you can spot something. I was originally looking to see if fire/ems had been to Sutherland before. Sounds as if a “fire” somewhere is connected???

I too am here for the duration. I have a 20 year old daughter going to college in Virginia, though not in the Charlottsville area. I believe all of us here will do anything we can to find justice for your family and of coarse Morgan. You all are keepers. Stay strong!

@ anotherB, 6:10: I have been thinking the same thing.

Here’s what I know, beyond the property records/sales I’ve already mentioned:

We know the employer and I found a few negative reviews. I know it is a family-run business, w/ family related in some way to him, because I can map names on property transactions of folks at the Monacan Trail address(es) to (a) the guy who runs the business–he’s also been quoted in a newspaper as a plumbing expert–and (b) the woman who is the business’ contact person (however she is not cheesy jumpsuit’s mom).

I’ve found two other folks who work at the company, one a “co-owner.” But I find nothing about ‘ole jumpsuit or his mom (except we know where she graduated high school, and from that we found a fourth, yes fourth, surname for her–and as I said before, red flags go up for me when I see that many last names and I know children are/were in the home–no offense to anyone, but at best it is not a picture of stability).

The kid may be so “off” that he does not have normal friend relationships (I know someone else touched on that here). Which frightens me, because you put a person with few functional adult social interactions out in society, and how do you expect him to forge relationships with people? We are aware of two ways in which he tried to relate to people: one that put him in prison/juvenile detention/whatever, and another that took place inside. Would they allow him to go to clients’ homes alone? I doubt it … at least I hope not.

I want to try one more time to find as much as possible, ’cause if he has nothing to do with this, then we have spent a whole lot of energy on this kid, and some other BG is laughing.

I have read all of the beautiful messages to the Harringtons, and you lot are the best. I can’t write anything more heartfelt or compelling, and I hope those messages lifted them and carried them right over to B’burg for tonight’s event.

I will add this- Sometimes what you cannot find, is more important than what you can.
Cheesy jumpsuit notwithstanding, he is a dangerous predator, imo.

    To Saramom-
To my knowledge Dan has not made a public statement. I know when situations arise, he works closely with LE. Of course nothing of this magnitude has happened before. He is usually in attendance at all major concerts and events. He was at the event I recently attended with my daughter. I’m sure if he has pictures of that night, he has shared them with LE. And yes, he is treats his employees well. A venue like JPJ has staff of their own, not just RMC. I’m sorry I can’t give you more details, I just don’t have the answers. I can say for sure that if Dan were MIA for half of the concert it would have been noticed by most of his staff as he is all over the venue checking on his employees at all times. He is in radio contact with the staff at all times also.

Oh yeah, o/t to Yoshi: I probably called myself a beer snob, and I probably am. But I am nothing compared to my husband. I have instituted a no beer purchases on weekdays rule because it will break the bank. I am addicted to BOC and he is addicted to Beer Advocate. I do not recall your saying whether you’re a fan of your husband’s home brews. :)

Dr. and Mrs. Harrington and Alex,

Please know that there are many people reading this website about your darling Morgan every day, hoping that arrests have been made. We may not have any clues to give, but will never stop caring about all of you and expecting more action from VSP soon.

  46. George says:

“I have no idea what people think the school should be doing that it isn’t.”

Well, how about changing the JPJ Arena policy on not allowing patrons readmittance? That should have been done the day after Morgan was reported missing. How completely stupid and uncaring does the UVa Administration want to appear? Are they afraid if they change the policy it will indicate the earlier policy was a mistake?

I believe because she was no longer of sound mind. Something happened to her, that dramatically altered her behaviour, and my guess is that she was drugged. From the point she went to the bathroom, her actions just don’t make sense anymore.

This can happen very easily – to facilitate a theft, or because some idiot believes it is fun…

I posted this a while ago – somewhere – why I believe this is the case – a friend of mine (male, tall, tough, straight) left his beer at the bar to go to the bathroom at 7pm, and he has no recollection of what happened until half past 4 am. They were able to reconstruct some events from CCTV and his credit card transactions. He seems to have walked away from the scene, and hours later he was approached by a women in the streets, they walked to a cash machine, he withdrew a *substantial* amount from his account, handed her the cash and they parted. They later found temazepam in his blood.

    Dr. Harrington-
I am another lurker. I’ve posted all of 2 or 3 times on this site, but I read here everyday. My daughter is a Freshman at JMU. Morgan has touch us both and you’ll be happy to know my daughter is more vigilant as a result. I hope you take comfort in the fact that Morgan’s murder has raised awareness for other young girls (and their mom’s)! God bless you and your family. We are all anxious to put this monster behind bars- some are just more vocal than others. God’s peace.

Well, I’ll take that as a huge compliment coming from you. Maybe someday after Morgan’s killer is found, I’ll drop the “total”. Then people won’t call me total “a”. :)

But, you still didn’t answer MY QUESTION! LMAO.

Just kidding. I guess you can’t answer it. Ugh. I’ll let it go… for now. BUT, I’m going to allow myself to think that you know something. And if you know it- LE knows it. I’m going to chance to hope that something was found at a residence, or that somebody tried to burn up their car or trunk. Because if that was to be the case- then it would point to someone specific- and LE would indeed have a serious POI. I think we could all use that kind of positive thought, even if just for a moment.

God, I have a million questions zinging through my head!

Anyone ever hear any more about the assault/ destruction of property report from December on Red Hill Rd?

    Nicely done.

I did hear that the owner is not a resident of the property, it is rented.
