Morgan Harrington Murder: Harringtons Debut Morgan Rocks

Posted by BOC Staff | Alex Harrington,Anchorage Farm,Dan Harrington,Gil Harrington,Morgan Harrington,Murdered | Wednesday 17 March 2010 12:28 pm

Charlottesville, VA- Continuing the crusade to memorialize their daughter Morgan and keep the public focused on the dangerous killer(s) still at large,  Dan and Gil Harrington will be meeting with media today at 1PM.

The meeting agenda will include the Harrington’s ongoing concerns for womens safety on and off campus, and their fears associated with the fact that there has not been an arrest in their daughters murder to date.

BOCMorganBridgePainting

The Harringtons are also expected to announce MORGAN ROCKS.

In response to a hand-painted river rock, lovingly and generously created and delivered to the Copely bridge by blinkoncrime.com contributor Skyler, containing the phrase “Rock On”; The Harringtons have decided to widen the trend.

MORGAN ROCKS

We are starting a “gathering of rocks” at Morgan’s memorial on

Morgan’s Bridge at Copeley Road on the North Grounds of the University of Virginia. When you come to Charlottesville and to the bridge bring a rock and a prayer to add to the collection. Leave both at the bridge!

Morgan, Gil, Alex and I continue to need your support and prayers as we wait for Morgan’s murder(s) to be brought to justice. Your support in raising society’s awareness of the need to change the culture of acceptance of violence against women and in so doing change the laws that allow these crimes to go unpunished.

Skyler’s slate rock was the first. A beautiful painted slate rock with an image of Anchorage Farm, Tibetan prayer flags and an angel rising to the heavens. Morgan, Rock ON!!!

Dan Harrington

Just to be clear, I strongly support LE and I realize they have a tough job. I also recognize that no one is infallible. I would like to see the parties responsible for this crime behind bars asap. I also appreciate the fact that you and your contributors keep the public’s attention focused on this case. I just believe, in a case like this, that we should not be too quick to dismiss potential evidence/leads. Thanks for all that you do.

I was clear Starbucks and I felt your point was clear and well intended. More than Fair.

The shirt is Morgan’s and should not be dismissed as you point out, but I respect everyone’s right to choose whether to accept that as fact of course.

With all due respect to the Harringtons, was the “broken bones” conclusion based on an opinion from mere visual inspection (as the article alludes), or is this the opinion of a medical professional?

I am about to sound way more knowledgable than I should, so let me preface this by saying I am just a
*hair above hack* status in anthropology-

Without being specific, the traumatic injuries sustained by Morgan Harrington, as observed visually, are believed to have been sustained ante-mortem.

An anthropologic study has been ordered and completed, and those results will not be released publicly.

well now ,was that shirt washed ?,lint brush? tape?must’ve taken it home or had in vehicle?thanks red ranger for coining the term i was looking for, science fair finalist,i do think its possible a ribbon was won ,what color?

  4. DCsteve says:

So both Harrington are medical professionals? Okay, that explains their conclusion. I assume the medical examiner agrees with this?

  5. suz says:

Ok, I know the ME would know, but maybe they haven’t divulged things to the Harringtons yet. Were the cows ever in that field from the time she went missing until the time she was found? Because cows are sort of irreverent and don’t much care where they step. They’ll bust up your gazebo, turn over your coolers, smash up your Weber grill, and poop right on the beautiful white wood of your 200 year old farm house.

Now, whether they’d walk across decaying remains, I’m not sure. But is it possible some bones were broken after death?

Again, the ME would know in a red hot second if the damage was pre or post mortem.

Now if it’s pre-mortem, then I guess her friends who said she would put up a heckuva fight may have been right.

  6. redly says:

That’s terrible to read about how morgan was brutalized, but it is what I suspected from blink’s previous comments. I really hope this info may shock the conscience of any friends/family members who may have suspicions but are sitting on them thinking this may have been a “date” rape type thing gone wrong.

    Agree totally.

  7. total amateur says:

Her bones were broken BEFORE she was killed?

Are we saying that there was some prolonged torture of Morgan?
    (Please, don’t let that be.)

Are we talking fractured ribs from a violent assault, or broken arms or legs? Multiple gunshots? WHAT!?

    This is horrid.

Combine that with the report that states LE has “no strong leads”- my blood is boiling. I’m literally enraged right now and can’t type anymore.

If this is all true… and maybe it’s displaced rage right now… I’m about to leave LE’s corner. For many reasons.

Skyler, what an incredible honor! From reading your daily contributions on BOC for some time now, I’m sure you are deeply touched and humbled by this… I wonder if you’ve been rendered speechless.

Yes, precious TA, I have been — but not over the rocks —

I just read the post that the H’s stated her bones were “shattered” and broken prior to her death — which they can determine — I just hope the first blow was to her skull and even though still alive, she was knocked unconscious

Blink’s been adamant she was brutally murdered — I was thinking GSW —

I’m just stunned w/ shock and sorrow — poor morgan — this is literally beyond my comprehension what could cause a person to do this to another person — unless they were hyped up on some sort of wicked drug — but still no excuse —

they have to find who did this —

Lord, to shatter her bones, they must have hit her w/ a baseball bat or other type of weapon — which I’m praying has Morgan’s DNA all over it —

Fear to the BG — and J4M !!

Lord,Blink, how did you hold this info inside w/out telling ?

Next time any of us want to rant on blink for saying, an arrest is coming soon or some other grit that’s under our skin — remember, she must have given her word she would not share this info — and she did not ! and then she’s blasted by we who say we are her friends —

    Heart you, Blink !

I felt that disclosure should only come from her parents if that was to be their choice, which I supported.

  12. TJ says:

Blink, maybe you can’t answer this, and I know it has been asked before, but in light of the Harrington’s concerns about the lack of an arrest, do you still feel like an arrest is imminent? Was the whole “location, location, location” thing a big fishing expedition? I’m not trying to be Missy Negative here…but I have been hopeful that this puzzle would be pieced together.

    Rock on, Morgan.

  13. acho says:

I just watched that Channel 12 video.

Bless the Harringtons, and bless you, B.

For whatever it’s worth, Morgan’s effect on me, in addition to the Gift of Fear and a desire to “hoop,” is that I am filled to overflowing with affection and admiration for more people than I would have imagined possible.

So as painful and enraging as it is to hear the truth of what happened to Morgan’s body, I believe Gil’s right in her words that we have to focus on the love. Morgan’s killer(s) surely never expected their crime would result in these feelings that I know we all share, or the sheer force of them.

We have to keep on doing whatever we can to help this family and this cause.

    Well Said acho-

It is my sincere hope that the depravity of this crime sparks a conscious out there.

Starbucks I was so glad to see your name coming through today, I feel like I haven’t seen you in a while and I’ve missed you. At this point I don’t know what to make of the t-shirt, but I’m going with Blink, as she seems to have some connections on this. I agree that it’s a frame of some sort, but I don’t know if it was to draw attention away, or bring attention to someone or somewhere in particular.

What I do know for sure is that is one of the UGLIEST DAMN apartment buildings I’ve ever seen, and I’m embarrassed for everyone to see it. It needs to come down.

  18. susanm says:

if the perp is in a rental van ,they probably thought they didnt have to worry about fibers on the shirt.

  19. Teri says:

The information that came from the Harrington’s today is heart wrenching. As I read Gil’s and Dan’s words, I clutched my chest, and gasped for air. Dear God in Heaven….I’m so sorry for the suffering Morgan must have endured.

Gil, Dan and Alex: Our deepest and most heartfelt prayers are with your family. We cannot express, deeply enough, the anguish we feel as we read your pain-filled words.

We pray every day for Morgan’s killer to be found, and pray for strength for your family as you continue to walk this unknown, unwanted and deeply painful road.

    Much love to your family.

  20. anotherB says:

It was definitely the right decision to release this information.

This is about the tenth attempt to write this post. There are just no words. I feel so incredibly sorry for the Harringtons.

  21. bluewillow says:

I was prepared to hear this and yet it still sucked the breath out of me to read of Morgan’s bones shattered and broken. I am stunned, saddened, enraged. I am so sorry Dan, Gil & Alex, no family should ever have to go through what you are going through. My deepest sympathies and prayers of comfort to you. Thank you for letting us share in this journey with you.

At the same time, I am thankful and relieved the information is public now. I think it is important that people know this and face it and contemplate it. As Blink said, may this finally spark someone’s conscience out there; I pray that new tips will be loosened from the community.

Cows would step on almost anything, apart from a dead body. A horse wouldn’t do it either.

  23. suz says:

Ok, how about the old theories (which I used to sort of dismiss) of Morgan getting hit by a car in the dark rainy night?

I guess the ME would know if the injuries were consistent with a car accident.

Otherwise, what? Defensive wounds on the arms protecting her face from a beating? Yikes.

    That’s tough to take.

  24. cadillac says:

After reading the beautiful “rock” tribute story which began with Skyler and acknowledged by the Harringtons, I had a wonderful flashback. One of my ALL times favorite children’s books was Roxaboxen by Alice McLerran. It is a beautifully written story about a hill where some children find rocks, boxes, sand and broken glass amongst other items. They use their imagination to create a play yard, if you will. Making a town and houses and streets – all with pieces of nature. (well, maybe not the glass!)

We could call the tribute “Roxamorgan”??

Ya’ll should read it – especially if you have elementary age children (Yep, I was a children’ li-berrian at one point too!)

    I love it, thank you.

  25. Judi says:

With Blink’s contention that the shirt was infact Morgan’s and Gil’s comment about the shattered bones, and Blink’s belief that this and any other visible injuries were ante-mortem, the urgency level of catching this piece of s**t(s) has just sky-rocketed.

And, this is just a TINY peek at what Morgan suffered through and what future victims will suffer through, what he/they is capable of.

I cannot pray enough for whoever is responsible for this to be caught and caught quickly. Morgan needs justice and women every where need protected from this individual(s).

Blink answered your question yesterday – and I will copy her response below:

    ********

    Blink said:

I have sources in every agency in this investigation. I have sources in the local community, and many with serious insight into individuals discussed on this site. I have M A N Y sources that I cannot and will not name.
Imo, based on a combination of my experience and knowledge base, known and non-public information, and other sources and resources, this case started over on January 25th.
I do not believe those responsible for Morgan’s murder believed she would be found.
I believe finding her has taken the investigation to include more than one suspect, and possible outcry witnesses.
As I learn about and develop leads in a case, it can always shift through that work.
INVESTIGATION, via route word, is INVESTing the time and resources to follow the leads and evidence.
No matter how hard I try, I can’t get it to follow me and tap me on the shoulder, that’s just the way it is.
I apologize if my “imminent” phraseology makes some take a day off or reduce their angst level to defcon 1.
I think it may be a fair characterization that for those of us in “Investigative Time Zone”, imminent means something different. My apologies.
I will clearify to say that I believe an arrest, leading to other possible arrests,
    is/are F O R T H C O M I N G in this case.

Suz, this is sort of out of place, but isn’t it amazing how cows can pooh straight out? They can seriously hit the side of a barn, the ceiling in your nice new horse trailer, or even the side of your 200 year old farmhouse. Not to mention what they’re doing to the ozone.

  32. ConcernedBystander says:

“Were you still alive when they brought you to Anchorage Farm? To be hunted like a deer running frantically over the hay stubble in the field desperate to escape, trying to survive, crying, screaming,…” — Gil in her latest blog.

Were the bones shattered as a result of a gunshot…or was she somehow brutalized and beaten and then with broken bones made to be “hunted like a deer” and shot? As bad as it is I would hope the bones got shattered due to being shot and not prior.

  33. Swiss Miss says:

Blink, I commend you for allowing the Harringtons to put forth the information about Morgan’s death, as difficult as it was for them to do. You and Morgan’s family have been carrying a heavy burden none of us wanted to fathom. It is my hope this will lead to much quicker progress being made and arrests occurring soon.

  34. DCsteve says:

Slightly more information in the ReadTheHook article:

  35. total amateur says:

Blink, now that the Harrington’s have bravely “released” this disturbing information, should we be expecting a press conference from VSP?

I think it’s long overdue. I’m going to tone down what I initially wanted to write. It would seriously piss off some people, you can be assured of that. But I will say this:

Any Police Department has a sworn oath to SERVE and PROTECT. If there is a sociopath out there capable of this kind of crime… THE PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW. If the Police do not have any solid leads… THE PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW. There is no shame in not being able to easily solve a difficult case… but there IS shame if you are not using every resource necessary to solve it, or if you are too proud to ask for help. They talk about building trust and developing relationships within a community… well that is a two-way street. IMHO, it’s pretty sad that the family of a murdered girl has to go on television to publicly release the magnitude of violence suffered by their beloved daughter. That they have to go out and warn the community themselves- and also attempt to drum up leads. Morgan’s abduction and murder is now 6 months old. People who might have seen some little thing on Oct 17th- or soon after- might not remember it now.

Let me add that I totally understand LE tactics in not releasing every bit of information they have. BUT… if they still have nothing- they need to stop standing on out-dated departmental policies and ask the public for help. If there is an extended timeline- a confirmed sighting, debit card use at a specific location… release it. It may turn up leads and witnesses. If she was seen in a vehicle- release the description. How about something on the 4 MIB? How about a police sketch artist rendition? ANYTHING THAT MIGHT HELP!!! The shirt…my God the shirt! Why would you not release this? What if someone not usually on that street saw something passing through? They would NEVER KNOW TO CALL POLICE! That should have been released immediately.

I seriously hope what I read today is totally innacurate and that LE has POI’s and is closing in. Blink, up to this point, seems to think so. I hope that an arrest is imminent and that soon I will regret writing this post- I will GLADLY eat my words.

For the record, I WANT LE to succeed. I WANT them to be doing the right thing. I WANT to be made to look like a total amateur who is spouting off over nothing, while the whole time LE was right on track. I hope LE’s silence has been for this very reason.

Anyone who wants to bash me on this post… go ahead. I’ll take it- I needed to get it off my chest.

  36. keekee says:

shattered and jagged…bones broken before death. she was tortured. please whoever has any suspicion of a family member, please hear the harringtons’ plea. show mercy, for the love of all that is good in this world!!

this is horrifying and must have been obvious to the coroner. i think i remember a coroner speaking about this is another case and that if a break is prior to death, there is marked evidence of hemorrhaging that stains the bone at the fracture site ever after (even with only skeletonized remains). that is my simplistic non-expert possibly incorrect memory of his explanation, but it’s important to dispel any doubt that this is anything other than scientific fact. there is no wishy washy wiggle room for anyone trying to protect a family member. stand up for what is right. please.

there are people that enjoy torturing and causing pain. this is illustrated in the case of a sicko named joe clark from wisconsin who killed one boy and tortured another boy for over 40 hours by breaking his bones with his bare hands. he twisted his legs and shattered the bones with some evil twisted fetish…he enjoyed it. a monster. morgan’s killer is no less a monster. he walks the earth now. no no no!

my aching heart hopes that morgan did not feel pain even if she was aware. there are accounts of people who have survived brutal beatings and multiple gunshot wounds who speak of feeling no pain during their assault. it was an “out of body” experience. please G-d let morgan not have suffered

Ok, this is prolly really stupid so don’t laugh me down too bad… but is there any chance someone put a look-alike shirt there as some kind of a tip for the police?

  39. suz says:

Ok, so the stark brutality of the murder doesn’t seem to shed any light on the identity of the killer(s). You see these things with a gang of 2 or more teens (or older), where mob mentality kicks in; you see brutal beatings with a love interest or ex love interest or husband, etc.; you see it with hate crimes(though I’m going to say it’s really unlikely in shiny Morgan’s case); or it could be a rapist stranger like the dude who brutally killed the news anchor (http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/11/11/arkansas.anchor.slain/index.html#cnnSTCText).

So I still can’t rule out my (angry or in a drug freakout) weirdo loner.

More than ever, I admire and revere Gil’s resolve to face her daughter’s remains as they lay in their raw, unedited (except by Mother Nature) state. Woof.

What consoles me, if anything can, is that survivors of horrible accidents or brutal beatings report having gone into shock very early on and therefore just not feeling anything going on with their bodies. It’s not much, but I’m willing to hang onto it.

    I believe that as well.

I hope this still doesn’t sound as ridiculous as when I originally posted this a month or so ago but here I go again…

I said before that maybe it was possible that some drunk or stoned driver hit her as she walked on the side of the road.

If the person freaked out about going to jail or prison and also knew of the “perfect spot” to dispose of the evidence then this may be a possibilty. Either way it would be a brutal murder and would explain the broken bones in slightly different manner than the worst thought that everyone is discussin lately.

I would pray this scenario would be how she met her fate instead of being beaten to death as bad as both sound. Either way it’s wrong.

Does this make more sense now or am I about to be schooled again? ;)

Respectfully, schooled, this was a violent and brutal murder and will not be interpretable as anything but.

  42. Observer says:

TO: Mom3.0 (and others): I appreciate that my ruminations about the tee-shirt elicited vigorous debate–although not my intent but (as noted in the post) as well they should, as healthy debate is always welcome. I likewise appreciate very much the candor, reasonableness, respect, and decorum demonstrated by you and others who have understandably taken issue with my theories and challenged same. It’s reassuring to know that, at any juncture and on any point/theory, readers here can agree to disagree without being disagreeable. This is a credit to you, and a testament to the character of everyone here.

TO: TA: No worries, my dear. I re-read my posts (both before and after hitting “Submit Comment”) and typically find countless errors, always leaving me wondering if readers think I’m a complete nit-wit. [I’m not; I’m just “seasoned” (read: old) as I keep saying. 2. I never find your hypotheses crazy. Rather, you are creative and insightful, and your posts always intriguing and thought-provoking.

RE: Copeley and “Morgan Rocks”: I coincidentally drove over the Copeley Bridge twice today on the way to and from meetings (unaware that the Harringtons were going to be holding a press conference), and was struck once again by the vibrant color and mementos left there for Morgan. My first thought was, what a moving tribute to her spirit it is!

I didn’t get home in time tonight to see the news but just read here about “Morgan ROCKS”. WRT add’l rocks donated from those outside the area: B, I know you’re syncing-up with the Harringtons on this effort so would like to offer that I am more than happy to pay and arrange for a p.o. box here in CV to which anyone can send a rock to add to “Morgan ROCKS”. My office is walking distance from Copeley so it would be no bother to lovingly place there any donated rocks in her memory, and in honor of both the donor and BOC. Likewise, I’d be happy to keep donors notified of their additions via general posts here at BOC. I absolutely defer, however, to whatever will be most comfortable for the Harringtons, as their wishes in this regard are obviously of paramount importance.

Please just know that I am happy to do whatever I can, as “feet on the ground”, to support this wonderful memorial to Morgan.

The “breaking of the bones” demonstrates the obvious lack of empathy exhibited by the killer(s), an obvious sociopath in my opinion. This type of person is unusually capable of looking and acting beyond suspicion and is highly skilled in “social blending”. Unfortunately, Morgan probably had little clue she was in danger until the killer(s) altered their disposition.

Trying to convince the killer to come forward is futile. This type of murderer feels no remorse, is solely interested in self-preservation, and has no conscious.

As Gil stated, “I will be devastated if another woman is killed here in a similar way…”

I believe her concern is dreadfully real; this person is EXTREMELY likely to strike again given what we know.

I agree, there is a zero possibility of a confession for unsub 1, possibility for unsub 2, who will be blamed by unsub 1.

As I stated the other day, he is adapting, He fooled one girl that we know of. It is game on for him.

My heart is just breaking for this child and her family, for all women and children.

I have such admiration Gil for taking us with her as she walks this impossible road, letting each one of us shoulder a tiny bit of her sorrow and stomach a tiny piece of her rage. It makes me feel a little less helpless in the face of the unimaginable, the unacceptable, the fact that such horror as this exists in our world , the world that precious Morgan laughed and dreamed and lived in. How can this be and yet it is.

Morgan is beyond pain now, as her mother there is no way Gils mind is not going to relive Morgans’ last moments in this world. One would have to go there in order to feel them and let them go just as Gil held Morgans lovely bones. Gil is a very brave woman. I admire her and pray for her and Dan and Alex.
Morgan will have justice in the end.

Thankyou again Blink and beloved fellow posters here on BOC , in the midst of all this sadness some of the things that come out of your mouths completely cracks me up!!

RE: Gil Harrington’s words, which now haunt me…

This is difficult to convey but I’ll try nonetheless…

Even after having seen the results of countless brutalities inflicted upon innocent victims…it still horrifies me to consider the things that Gil and Dan Harrington are having to imagine about their sweet Morgan.

What strikes me–and for some reason, puzzles me–is that I can still be shocked…appalled…overwhelmed…taken aback…when I visualize as Gil does what had to have happened to Morgan to result in her broken, abused body.

Dr. and Mrs. Harrington, please know that my heart goes out to you, all over again. That someone would visit these atrocities on your dear daughter is unthinkable. If it does nothing else, it furthers our resolve to not only catch her murderer, but to do whatever is in our individual and collective power to ensure that never again does one more young woman suffer such a fate.

With wishes for your peace and healing,

Brutally murdered, we understood that. Broken bones means more than multiple gun shot or stab wounds.

If the victim’s heart is still beating, she is alive for all intents and purposes. When her bones are broken, contusions present, hematomas form, bone fragments float; the bones bleed. If there is evidence on those broken surfaces or in their attachments, it might move ME to suggest that bones were broken either antemortem or perimortem. If there is a great deal of blood in the area of the remains, it might also suggest torn flesh, bleeding bones.

I am curious if Morgan was rendered unconscious by blows and then run over by a vehicle which would have added injury to injury.
