Morgan Harrington Murder: Harringtons Debut Morgan Rocks

Posted by BOC Staff | Alex Harrington,Anchorage Farm,Dan Harrington,Gil Harrington,Morgan Harrington,Murdered | Wednesday 17 March 2010 12:28 pm

Charlottesville, VA- Continuing the crusade to memorialize their daughter Morgan and keep the public focused on the dangerous killer(s) still at large,  Dan and Gil Harrington will be meeting with media today at 1PM.

The meeting agenda will include the Harrington’s ongoing concerns for womens safety on and off campus, and their fears associated with the fact that there has not been an arrest in their daughters murder to date.

BOCMorganBridgePainting

The Harringtons are also expected to announce MORGAN ROCKS.

In response to a hand-painted river rock, lovingly and generously created and delivered to the Copely bridge by blinkoncrime.com contributor Skyler, containing the phrase “Rock On”; The Harringtons have decided to widen the trend.

MORGAN ROCKS

We are starting a “gathering of rocks” at Morgan’s memorial on

Morgan’s Bridge at Copeley Road on the North Grounds of the University of Virginia. When you come to Charlottesville and to the bridge bring a rock and a prayer to add to the collection. Leave both at the bridge!

Morgan, Gil, Alex and I continue to need your support and prayers as we wait for Morgan’s murder(s) to be brought to justice. Your support in raising society’s awareness of the need to change the culture of acceptance of violence against women and in so doing change the laws that allow these crimes to go unpunished.

Skyler’s slate rock was the first. A beautiful painted slate rock with an image of Anchorage Farm, Tibetan prayer flags and an angel rising to the heavens. Morgan, Rock ON!!!

O K, it was Amber Dubois’s grandmother that hired the dogs in Calif.
She disappeared in the winter; and the dogs picked up her scent in August. They were in a car, but at each exit off the highway, the car would stop and was able to track the scent. They came within two miles and the two dogs went to the same spot. I figure maybe that is where he killed her or something and then dumped her the two miles away from that spot.

This was amazing that these dogs could do that. I saw a short video of the dogs and they did not look like bloodhounds or black german shepherds just big dogs.

I still believe (pray) that LE has had their suspects from the beginning. After they were outed, that is.

Maybe the significance of the location is that it’s totally unlikely that these people would have any familiarity with Anchorage Farm?

I hope that there is a grand jury hearing evidence as we speak….

I read here often but don’t post much. But I did want to speak out for Comso or Cosmo here today. I really think he has a great point about teaching women to defend themselves. It’s the next step in the gift of fear. If you have fear, you should channel it to survive. And you can prepare. You can’t change other peoples actions, but you do have control of your reaction.

Cosmo was imflamatory, but don’t let a sound message get lost.

“The rumor mill has been buzzing non-stop about the possibility that Morgan’s friends may be the key to understanding what happened to her.”

Oh My. Have you guys seen this?

Virginia Tech and Blacksburg leaders are preparing a response to an upcoming protest from the Westboro Baptist Church in relation to slain Tech student Morgan Harrington.

Members of the church, based in Topeka, Ks., have received negative attention for their protests at military funerals as well as anti-gay and anti-Semitic rhetoric.

A calendar post on the Westboro Baptist Church’s Web site, godhatesfags.com, says the group will protest April 9 in downtown Blacksburg, outside Blacksburg High School, and the Virginia Tech branch of Hillel.

About 30 people circled together inside Owens Dining Hall Saturday afternoon to discuss a unified response. The meeting, led by Student Government Association president Brandon Carroll, tossed around several ideas in handling the church.

“We want everybody on the same page,” Carroll said.

    SNIPPED

Church officials said they were not protesting the 2007 shootings, saying they were “coming for the event that happened last month,” referencing slain student Morgan Harrington. A 20-year-old education major, Harrington was found in late January 2010 after going missing in October 2009 while attending a Metallica concert in Charlottesville, Va.

“We’re not going to bring our sign that said, ‘God sent the shooter.’ No, no, we’ll leave that one at home.’” said Shirley Phelps-Roper, eldest daughter of church founder Fred Phelps. “We’ve got a sign that says ‘God sent the killer.’”

The church’s protest at Blacksburg High School is against Kevin Jennings, Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools at the U.S. Department of Education.

Montgomery County Schools Superintendent Brenda Blackburn said no determination has been made on how they would communicate to students and parents about the protest. Classes will be in session on April 9.

And the hits just keep on coming for this poor family. This is one of the vilest hate groups disguised as a ‘church’ which is really a one-family cult in all of America. They usually prey on families of soldiers killed in combat in Iraq or Afghanistan under the meme of “God is punishing America because of its pro-gay stance” or whatever fits their twisted agenda at that time. They protest with their anti-gay signs outside the funerals of our fallen heros. It’s filthy and disgusting.

I continue to follow Morgan’s case, cheering from the sidelines. Yet again, I am amazed that the horrific tragedy that befalls one family can have such a widespread, reverberating effect. Over the course of five months of discussing Morgan’s plight, hoping and praying for a positive outcome, theorizing and researching related investigative angles, and managing our vast array of emotions, this group-this band of brothers and sisters-has grown. We have expanded our horizons. We have learned to appreciate a variety of styles of music and have embraced the differences that make them unique; we have explored the infinite realm of data available via the internet and have experienced the power of collective keystrokes; we have discussed and dissected a myriad of social pitfalls and injustices and taken action to eliminate them; we have explored our own consciences, realized our own weaknesses and strengths and have openly vowed to use these attributes to make positive differences; we have learned lessons that will make both our lives and the lives of our children safer and more productive; we have found our own “Gift of Fear” and have seen the power that embracing it holds for us individually and collectively; we have witnessed first-hand the strength and grace of an amazing family under the most awful of conditions and been awed by their honesty and integrity; we have through tear-clouded eyes read powerful and thought provoking words from a grieving Mother that have helped us navigate the unsettling waters of our own grief more effectively; we have learned that the power of one is magnified exponentially when bonded together for a common cause; we have learned that we can have diametrically opposing views and disagree completely yet intelligently and rationally resolve these differences and come to common ground; we have shared the losses of others and become more whole because of it; we have found the true good in humanity.

For these lessons, I thank Morgan, the bright and shiny girl; the Harringtons, our guides and mentors on this improbable journey; Blink, the force that bonds us; and all the Blinksters who unwaveringly continue to seek J4M. This is a powerful and learned group. Changes will be made, reform will be enacted and attitudes will be changed. This is a continuing job that will require commitment from us all to complete effectively. Keep working one and all.

mynamehere:because you asked. The following is from the 1/30/2010 obituary archive section of the Daily Progress, a local Charlottesville paper. I do not know whether or not Greene County has their own newspaper and I don’t have time to look. I’m sure there are others who if interested, can tell you.

    “William “Willie”L. Morris
William “Willie” Linwood Morris, 65, of Stanardsville, passed away Thursday, January 28, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Willie was born January 29, 1944 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the son of Margaret F. Morris and the late Cecil Clyde Morris.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Clyde S. Morris.
He is survived by his mother, Margaret F. Morris of Stanardsville; one daughter, Lisa A. Morris of Baltimore, Maryland; one son, William Morris; one grandson, Mark Ryan Morris, also of Baltimore, Maryland; a special nephew, Stanley Morris of Madison; a special cousin, Phyllis Deane of Ruckersville; a special friend, Jesse Sheckler of Stanardsville; and numerous friends, nieces, nephews, and cousins, whom he loved.
Willie proudly served as Sheriff of Greene County from 1983 until his retirement in 2003. He loved Greene County and the people of Greene County.
He was a devoted son, father and grandfather. Willie enjoyed spending time with his family and watching his grandson’s sporting events.
Willie was an avid weight lifter. Power lifting has never had a lifter like Will Morris. He was very competitive and loved the sport like no one the family and friends has ever known. His accomplishments are among the best ever.
Will, since turning 40 years old, lifted in his first ADFPA National Masters Championship in Flint, Michigan in 1984. Will won the meet earning his first National Championship. He went on to win two dozen more National Championships in three weight and age divisions. His last USAPL National Championship came last May. He worked hard to get his weight just over the 275 pound class limit at 276 pounds to lift in the Super Heavyweight class. Morris has his eye on history. At the meet in St. Louis, he set the IPF World squat record with 601 pounds. The lift not only gave him 60-69 World Record, he is the first and only man over 60 to squat 600 pounds and be drug tested.
With the win, Morris made the United States World team for the eighth time. He went to Czech Republic to win his fifth IPF World title last September. His winning the Championship gave the United States of America team victory.
Will won numerous state and national titles in several federations. He set World Records in NASA, IPA, WPF and 100% Raw Power lifting Federations. He won two other World title’s in the last decade, one each with the IPA and WPF. His greatest and most memorable lifts came in the IPF. The world’s largest power lifting federation with 45 plus nations. The lifters must be drug free and only one lifter country, per weight, and age class can lift. Will lifted all over the World. Here is the list of IPF World Championships and current records:
2002 Argentina 50-59 class World Champion; 2004 India 60-275 class World Champion; 2005 South Africa 60-69, 275 class World Champion; 2007 Czech Republic 60-69, 275 class World Champion; 2009 Czech Republic 60-69, 275 plus class World Champion; Current World Record; 60-69, 275 Class total record 1549; 60-69, 275 plus Squat 601 pounds.
Will was active in power lifting. He was a promoter and put on over 50 State and local championships. At the national level he was the meet director for a dozen contests including the United States biggest drawing event the 2009 USAPL Raw Nationals.
He was on the National Board of USAPL as the athlete’s rep. He was to lobby on behalf of lifters who had a problem. He could be counted on to do his best in presenting the case for the lifters.
As a coach, he trained dozens of lifters over the years. He was their biggest cheerleader and led many lifters to local, state and national titles. He was always more excited for them than himself when they won or hit a personal best or set a record lift.
He was a National Official and would travel all over the United States at his own cost to help with a contest. Also in the early 1960′s Willie was a boxer, winning 13 fights out of 14.
Will, we love and will miss you, Rest In Peace. God bless.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, February 1, 2010, at the Evergreen Church of the Brethren, 645 Evergreen Church Road, Dyke, Virginia, with the Reverend C. C. Kurtz officiating.
Interment to follow at the Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers for the service will be the Greene County Sheriff’s Department Deputies including Sheriff Scott Haas, Capt. Charles Swingler, Sgt. Robert Beverage, Sgt. Rodney Snead, Cpl. Spurgeon Wade Jr. and Cpl. Billy Wade III.
The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 p.m. Sunday, January 31, 2010, at the Ryan Funeral Home, 12819 Spotswood Trail, Ruckersville, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the American Tinnitus Association (ata.org) or the Evergreen Church of the Brethren, 10740 Dyke Road, Stanardsville, VA 22973.
Ryan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements”

Sorry for the length, but I’ve never been successful creating a link. I’ve seen in papers in other locales an explanation of cause of death but that is not common in the Charlottesville area. If you are interested in reading reports on his suicide, you can probably find those in the Daily Progress archives.

“teach your daughters how to use a gun, protect themselves,” and
“why shouldn’t she be carrying a firearm? if i had a daughter in Virginia right now, then yes, i would suggest she carry a firearm.”

I have a very good reason why your daughter should not carry a firearm. My dad left for work one morning, a job that he had for over 20 years and never missed a day. He didn’t make it that day because some POS somehow took control over his handgun and car. He was found about a week later an hour in the opposite direction from where he was headed, shot in the head with his own f’ing gun. I wasn’t there so I don’t know if he was overpowered or what happened, maybe he thought he could talk his way out of it because he didn’t want to harm another humanbeing.
So you are welcome to your opinion and can teach your children whatever you want but I will not think having a gun will save me and will not give my child a false sense of security. I talk to my daughter about her safety and in a few years when she starts going out without me she will carry pepperspray not a deadly weapon.

That is positively horrific, I am so sorry for your loss, and yes, an example of how owning a firearm is a deeply individual issue.

There had to be a point of speapartion between the MIB and Morgan, because she was seen with the BB players after she was originally seen with the MIB.

  26. In Memory of Gini says:

“What’s not explained is why Haas’ officer from Greene County was engaged in Albemarle. Virginia law limits cross-jurisdictional activity to hot pursuits, but in this case, according to the Lunsford report, Greene ***officer Snead*** was searching for the stolen vehicle in North Garden and got involved after he was “advised by phone that Eppard had turned onto Route 6.”

Hook legal expert David Heilberg cites Virginia’s 300-yard to one-mile grace period when officers in pursuit cross a boundary out of their jurisdiction. ***Snead*** was more than 20 miles beyond the Greene border when he joined the chase.

You got that right. I am going to want an explanation whether this has to do with Morgan or not.
    B

    ——————-
According to an article in the Washington Post:

The incident began about 1 p.m. when a Greene County deputy spotted Colby Eppard, 18, driving a truck he was using without the owner’s permission. Eppard crashed the truck, refused orders to stop and fled on foot through nearby woods, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

The deputy pursued Eppard, who doubled back, smashed the window of the deputy’s patrol car and drove it away. In a second chase that crossed multiple county lines, Eppard used the stolen patrol car’s lights and radio, and at times forced other motorists off the road as he sped around them.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/01/AR2010010101884.html

Perhaps Officer Snead was attempting to retrieve his stolen police car.

    Sadly the article continues:

“Eppard was living with an aunt near Stanardsville at the time of the incident and was driving her truck Friday afternoon when police first spotted him, his stepmother, Terry Eppard, said.
She said the family had sought help for years for her stepson, who was in and out of trouble with the law and had spent time in residential facilities, including OLA Home for Boys in Richmond, which serves mentally ill or emotionally disturbed adolescent boys….Family members said they were listening to police dispatches of the incident on a scanner. “There is enough in the file cabinet” to show that he needed more help, Terry Eppard said. “You don’t know where else to turn for help; you don’t know where to go; you don’t know what to do.

“In the back of my mind, I’m sitting here thinking: What else could we have done?”

    ——————-

“To suggest that the answer to this age-old problem lies simply in “…fix your security systems, hold your state institutions and organizations accountable, get your LE to disclose information, and teach your daughters how to use a gun, protect themselves, not go out at night by themselves, charge their phones and not leave friends outside venues by themselves…” is, in a word, folly. It does not address the root of the problem; that is, why men perpetrate violence against women.”

Well said and I agree 99%. I don’t think this is mainly a case of men perpetrating violence against women.

All right, here goes… I am a man. Yes, I know, but it’s not as if I had anything to say in the matter. I’ve been male way before I could talk. And yes, I kinda like it. It’s mostly fun.

As a man I have a plenty of male friends and together we do lots of male stuff, we drink beer, talk about football and boast about (or make up) sexual encounters. We play heavy metal songs very poorly in the garage and we go to the gym to run off those meatballs. Stupid, yes. But harmless. We do not run around abusing and disrespecting women, that’s not a thing that automatically comes with manhood.

Statistically most perps are men, and most victims are female (not sure about the last one), but that doesn’t mean that all men are violent. (not saying that anyone on this site suggested that) It’s statistics.
Statistically most perps are (well) known by their victims, so statistically jogging alone late at night is reasonably safe. The family table is where the danger lies, you should bring your shotgun to your bedroom. Statistically that is.

Point being, I think that violence and disrespect in general is the root of the problem. Not just violent men.
How to prepare for that violence is a complex issue, however.

The trouble is that what all BG’s have in common, is what we all have in common: two eyes, a mouth, arms, legs, etc. (all right, I give in, *that* too. Yes.) There is no way you can tell with certainty if someone wants to hurt or help you.

I’ve always been a very trusting person, and I still aim to be. But Morgans case and this site have made me more aware of the dangers that are out there and I applaud the persistence and respect with which this case is treated on this forum.

Thank you for weighing in. I agree with you, the conversation started relative to this case, which I believe is about a violent offender (s) who happens to be male.

    Your point is well taken.

Good lord, what do they hope to accomplish? A beautiful, free spirited young woman/sister/daughter/friend to so many, was murdered, and they want to protest? I wish they would crawl back under the rock from whence they came :(

Blink i find your reasonning about personal code and gift of fear very well said and thought. You can see this behavior in the world of the animals they live instinctivly with that to Protect themselves from predators. I don’t think that guns are a solution.

I can hardly lift myself up after this Blacksburg demonstration crap. Reading that is like taking a kick to the gut. And on Dr. Harrington’s birthday.

I am trying to let it be fuel to my fire. I hope the Harringtons will, too.

    BTW, Westboro Baptist Church, can you spell B A C K F I R E ?

I am simply hoping to impart the idea that jumping to conclusions, and reading evidentiary clues is just that- it is part and parcel of what LE is facing. They know alot. Building the case to prove it, is a challenge in this case.

I believe strongly our poor Morgan was subjected to unthinkable horror, and I want these freaks arrested yesterday.”

I got it. And this is what I had feared.

Regarding the answer that Blink gave to Cat’s question (quoted below): Do you mean the phone does not require/use a SIM? Or the SIM was removed (or could have fallen out since the cover was off from the battery falling out/being removed)?

I’ve asked before: What model pf phone was this?? Just curious.

    Cat says:March 29, 2010 at 5:00 pm
Was it ever determined, or does anyone know if the SIM card was removed from the cell phone?

Her phone did not contain a SIM

This is certainly true. And in most cases, it is very surprising who actually turns out to be violent. For instance, last week a certain Mr. Nice Guy TV Presenter and Wealthy Businessman (with a reputation of suing everybody) was arrested on charges of having raped his girlfriend of 11 years after she found out about his wife, the two kids, and his other girlfriend when she accidentally came across a few old plane tickets. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but it certainly makes you wonder about the amount of evidence they must have against him.

    Dr. Harrington,
Wishing you birthday blessings and may our collective, simultaneous wish for you be granted on this day-J4M.

May our support and concern offer you comfort and renewed hope as you continue your journey. Any gift we have to offer pales in comparison to what you have given us, but we promise to be here as long as we are needed and support you in all your endeavors.

    Peace be with you.

@Kim: If I remember correctly the phone didn’t require a SIM.

    Mom3 Your post was beautiful.
gifter3 your post was also beautiful

  41. suz says:

Kriddo, just looked it up. Most murderers are men, and most murder victims are also men (by far). Sexual assault would undoubtedly have a different complexion, I’d imagine.

  42. skyler says:

Blink, you said: I do not want to place a bad light on the deceased Sheriff, I am just feeling a bit uneasy about all of the happenings in that area. Something is not right. I can’t find a normal obituary of the Sheriff. I can find the Church of Brethren held his funeral, but no real obit.

Blink, I was looking up weather radar during a really bad storm on Sunday and found this, which ties in to your above statement — the link is to the news page — there are too many stories to link each one — scroll down and this one is under MH’s parents speak out — but what in the world is going on in that area?

under this one news thread — there is the continuing search for the missing VCU British exchange student, whose bicycle was found but he has not.

There is a link about a woman whose dead body was found in a western Henrico lake (about three or four counties and about 45 mins. east of Cvlle)

a violent sex offender released from jail in June, rapes again on Caroline Cnty high school property

*** this one piqued my ears — this man lives in Louisa — just to the east of Cvlle — multiple guns and drugs — convicted felon

I am not a psychic. I am not a medium. I do not see, hear or talk to the dead. I wish that I were. I would ask Morgan two questions: No. 1 — What on earth WERE you thinking; and No. 2 — who did this to you.

But in my bones I just feel like whoever is responsible — for the deed — for the cover up — it’s just bigger than this one incident — and that’s why nobody is talking, nobody is claiming the reward money — there are no guaranteed deals on the table and if I rat out the other guy, I go to prison, too — Va. does not have parole in these cases — or at least it used to not have parole, maybe the law has changed — and that *perhaps* one of the reasons for LE’s silence is not that they don’t have legit info, but that when they started digging around, it was bigger than just poor Morgan —
    I don’t know

After reading about this so-called church’s religious calling from God to protest Va. Tech over Morgan and that God sent the killer — it literally makes me sick physically to even read those words, much less type them — I’m stunned into silence — arguing, debating w/ these type of people gets nowhere — just riles them up and gives them more press —

Honestly, my first reaction is violence against them — like a punch in the nose and tell ‘em to shut the eff up —

but that’s not how I was raised, nor the way Morgan was raised and it sullies her name and her family to do so —

I talk to God all the time — sometimes God answers, sometimes God doesn’t (my dog is still gone, case in point) — I need to talk to God about this and hope God will offer up some guidance in what to do : (

here’s that news link — unreal

Observer, Thank you, I agree with you also- You said it just fine- I just reiterated it. Please, have a safe trip, Observer. Let your hair down, stop to smell the roses. Come back to us, revitalized. We’ll miss you. As PM1 succinctly said : We will leave the light on for you.

Suz, ZuezRocks, Georgie, BlueWillow, Acho, Blink, and all, thank you for your kindness, I am honored that you took the time to let me know how you feel.

LuvBlink, Thank you for sharing your loss with us in the hopes that your Dad’s story will help others.

Justiceformorgan, Thank you for bringing over that information. Something isn’t right- There is a bigger story there. My prayers go out to that boys family, and to the town and police depts. May they all get the answers and closure that is needed.

MSL, thank you for that information, I had no idea that the Sheriff was such a reknowned Body builder, very impressive and interesting.

2000cville, Thank you for sharing your feelings and info- about that weekend- March 29, 2010 at 12:50 pm and thank you for your follow-up question Bev– 2000Cville says the football team returned from an away game during the concert. I assume they return to the locker rooms near the stadium a few blocks away and not to UHall ….?
It is so hard to believe with as many people that were out and about that night few if any saw Morgan or anything suspicious.

Kim, We do not know exactly what kind of phone Morgan had.

Dr. Harrington, I wish you a Happy Birthday and may the next year hold only good things for you and yours, beginning with the answers and justice that you seek.

So, if I understand you correctly, these are skeletal remains, and there is evidence of rape. Since torn clothing and missing tights would only support the assumption that it was rape, as would any possible stains on said clothing, there must be other evidence.

There are certain patterns of soft tissue injury which are specific to rape – did he brake her bones in these places? Any other possible scenario I can imagine is object penetration, and this is what I read between the lines in Blink’s remark. Sorry for the graphics, I would never have thought I could write speculative remarks like these about a deceased person on the internet.

Police should make it public. Someone protects these people (changed my mind, this really sounds like the work of several perpetrators, some form of sadistic gang rape), and they have to come forward. Close friends and family probably wouldn’t care, but there must be the neighbour who witnessed something, or the co-worker, who noticed defensive wounds or the like.

re: anotherb’s comment at 4:50pm, Your last two paragraphs made me think: It would seem like ANY specific info would trigger a memory or a suspicion (having harmed an animal in a like manner.. using a type of weapon in a careless but to frighten someone way? Ex-girlfriend may ‘remember’ something..
Seriously, the phone isn’t important in any way, I’m sure, why can’t we know what model? I thought it from the beginning to understand how easily the battery could come off… not trying to rehash it, but just to say why wasn’t it even mentioned, especially when it was such an issue of the battery.

In perspective.. are other local high-profile crimes played to close to the vest??

  49. mary says:

Oh my gosh I love all my Blink friends. I can’t bear to post on the new thread but have been reading all the comments. I can’t stand the thought of THAT kind of hate in the world. The only thing that keeps me sane is knowing that YOU GUYS are here, representing people all over the world, and showing love, doing the right thing, living your lives every day as GOOD PEOPLE. I am so glad I know you, even though I wouldn’t know you on the street. My daughter and I have a little thing, when anyone shows us a kindness we say, Lord, bless that person IMMEDIATELY. Lord, bless the Blinksters, IMMEDIATELY!

  50. Minnie says:

    Bless you too, Mary.
