UVA Lacrosse Teammate Arrested For Murder of UVA Woman

Charlottesville, VA– Following a 2:15 am 911 call regarding a possible alcohol overdose, Charlottesville Police have arrested a UVA lacrosse player, formerly of The Landon School Team where1 of the falsely accused Duke Lacrosse team played in High School and 4 others were on the Duke roster.

George Huguely

George Huguely, from Chevy Chase, MD, has been arrested and charged with the first degree murder of fellow Lacrosse Player and UVA senior Yeardley Reynolds Love.

A source speaking on the condition of anonymity, has confirmed to blinkoncrime.com that Huguely is a member of the UVA Fraternity Delta Kappa Epsilon.

Yeardley Love

Love, a 22 year old Senior at UVA, was found by EMT and Charlottesville Police upon responding to a 911 call at the apartment she shared with team and room mate Kaitlinn Duff. It is not yet known if the call was made from the apartment or another location.

Yeardley and Kaitlinn

The apartment they shared at 14th NW is one block from where the Pantera shirt, confirmed to be that of murder victim Morgan Harrington, was found in November 2009.

Police have not yet released a cause of death for Ms. Love, but say her body showed signs of physical trauma.

Huguely has been committed to the Albemarle County Jail without bond pending his arraignment.

For what it is worth, I know this girl’s family. I grew up in Baltimore and I believe she attended RPCS, where I went to school. She is much younger than I am, and we never went to school together, however.

Based on what I know, I don’t believe her murder is connected to Morgan. I know very little, however, and am only speculating, of course.

  6. katie says:

This is very sad. I doubt it is connected to Morgan Harrington though.

As a UVA alum who is very familiar with the area, I know 14th Street is a high traffic area near bars and where many students live and walk.

I have read on other sites that Love and Huguely were in a relationship, so this would seem to be the cause. The alcohol poisoning thing doesn’t make much sense to me though.

Either way, it is very sad and I hope they find the killers of Morgan and Yeardley meet justice.

  7. redly says:

It happened last night. They must have very solid evidence about him. The police said they did not live together at the apartment (hers) but that he lived close by. Not sure if they were still dating. Don’t see the relevance of mentioning the falsely accused duke players. Just tragic and makes me feel literally sick as an alumnus.

    Redly-

Be fair my friend. He was interviewed in the field about it and his Father was quoted in regards to it as well..

“Regardless of what winds up happening, you have to learn from this experience and take what you can from it,” George Huguely Sr. said. “You always have to remember and can’t let yourself be in a situation where something like this could happen.”

    Definitely warranted the mention.

So the fact that he’s a DKE brother interests me. Your last piece on Morgan made this mention:

“Carr’s Hill was the former site of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity until 2003 when it was moved by the city to it’s current location on Culbreth.”

The Fraternity mention interested me as a clue at the time. This may very well be a completely separate incident but then again, maybe not. I know my Fraternity held one of our rituals out in the woods in Jefferson National Forest twice a year. I wonder if the DKE’s have ever held rituals, brother retreats or public parties @ Anchorage Farm? My condolences to the Love family.

Redly, I find it relevant because of what could be learned from the Duke parents, whom Huguely’s folks likely know, in terms of providing a strong defense for their son.

Devastating news and I am so sorry for the families, teammates, and friends.

Can we trust they have obtained Huguely’s DNA already and will share with VSP?

Let’s not shift our attention from finding Morgan’s killer(s). If not Huguely, then today is a great day for the perp(s).

  17. concernedwahoo says:

Not to draw too many conclusions (long time reader, first time poster), but I notice that Mr. Huguely’s father is in the lumber supply business. It also appears that there are a few lumber wholesalers in the AF and North Garden areas around Charlottesville. Is it possible that Mr. Huguely could have some intimate knowledge of this area of the world vis a vis his father’s business? And, if this is a possibility, then Miss Love could have been “in the loop” about Morgan, threatened to go to the cops, and boom! violent outburst results in her death…

Yep, that’s a long shot definitely. But it’s not totally out of the scope of possibility.

Blink, I think that this crime is the attention that UVA has been trying to avoid in Morgan’s death. Unfortunately it is now smack dab in the middle of a crime that involves 2 UVA students. With this latest – - shall we call it murder? – - will this bring VSP closer to looking at how local LE handled Morgan’s death considering the proximity of the shirt to this latest crime scene? I wonder if this young mans frat ever had parties out on AF or nearby farms.

  19. Ragdoll says:

HLN is reporting that the 2 were romantically involved.

Yeardley was found by her roommate. She thought it could be alcohol related (again, as reported by HLN). There is evidence of physical trauma but not reporting what her injuries are.

Que? Not sure I’m following your reference. The Deke’s aren’t quite secret society but they seem to be a lot “higher class” than my group was :) Most frats, though seriously do some things outdoors. That may be part of initiation rights, a brother retreat (which is supposed to be a “bonding” experience but is really just a bunch of guys getting completely wasted and camping out), or sometimes they hold parties outdoors as a break from the typical college party. If Deke has used AF for anything of this sort, then maybe this guy could be tied to Morgan as well. It’s probably isolated but I wouldn’t rule it out.

the lacrosse community on the east coast is very tight knit, especially in the mid-atlantic region. i have a feeling we are going to be hearing a lot about this tragedy in the coming days, especially since the NCAA’s are coming up soon.

it is very common for fraternities and sororities to hold rituals out in the woods. i dont think its out of the question that dke or maybe a skull&bones secret society could have done rituals at AF.

normally, those who are members of skull and bones are very involved in the college, are on sports teams, or on other important committees. many of them also come from wealthy families.

i think it’s important that this is all checked into very thoroughly by the authorities. this just doesn’t immediately pass the smell test to me. of course, this kid is probobaly already lawyered up and will be instructed not to speak anymore.

Before I leave, though, I wanted to let Chad (? – the postmark was from California) know that I picked up the Morgan’s ROCKS package today (there was only one package; there had been two notices for its pick-up while I was out-of-town) and said a small prayer as I lovingly placed it at Morgan’s memorial on the Copeley Rd. bridge. It is another beautiful tribute to Morgan among so many others on Copeley.

Juliemooly, I placed this tribute directly in front of the bright, aqua-blue lantern so you’ll know where to take pictures. [It is a glass dish containing rocks and a purple Remember Morgan Harrington bracelet.]

I think it is because it is so early in this case. The police always look at boyfriend/spouse first. I would bet anything he and the victim had a very troubled relationship that her and his friends knew about — maybe even some abuse issues in the past. Heck, he may have been with her at a party or in bars that night with lots of other people. The strange thing is the 1st degree charge. That does mean they think they have evidence already that shows premeditation and that they were comfortable enough with it to charge him with that immediately instead of just charging him with something lesser and then upgrading it once they had their evidence in a row. Maybe he told someone he was going to do it or had threatened her and the roommates knew it. I don’t know.

I doubt morgan knew him from before. He went to school in an elite private school just outside DC, nowhere near roanoke (I am assuming he didn’t transfer in but that is just an assumption).

Yes they can put them up the night before games and often do. The football team even does it before home games — though ZI doubt the lacrosse team had the budget for that. They play all over the east coast though. Annapolis is perhaps close enough to conceivably let them bus it that morning if it was a late afternoon/night game. UVA has/had what is probably the best lacrosse program in the country. Only the cuse, cornell and johns hopkins compare.

Not sure out of season but I think so blink. They even take the hoops team to Europe every few years to play. Here is more info on the October 18 scrimmage. It was actually a double header and the first game was at 1. It is a 3 hour drive so it is certainly conceivable they drove it, whether they could have put them up or not. If they left at 8 or so, that would be plenty of time — especially for a game that did not count in the record books.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA- The Virginia men’s lacrosse program will conclude its fall scrimmage schedule on Sunday by traveling to Annapolis, Md., to take on Navy and Team USA in a doubleheader scrimmage at Rip Miller Field, located on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy.

UVa will square off with Navy at 1 p.m., immediately followed by a tilt with one of two U.S. Men’s Lacrosse National Training Teams. The U.S. Men’s Lacrosse National Training Team is currently comprised of 40 players who will be vying for one of the Federation of International Lacrosse-mandated 23 roster spots. The weekend of Oct. 18 is the second of three training weekends this fall for the team before it is cut to its mandatory size in preparation for the FIL World Championship in Manchester, England, July 10-24, 2010.

Former UVa midfielder and current member of Major League Lacrosse’s Boston Cannons, Matt Poskay, is the lone Cavalier alum on the 40-player training roster. Poskay, a second team All-American for the Cavaliers in 2006, was also named to the NCAA Championships All-Tournament team after UVa swept through the season on its way to a perfect 17-0 season and the program’s fourth national championship.

The 40-man training roster will be split into two squads and ACC foe Maryland will join the five-team field.

A note for fans traveling, only cars with Department of Defense (DoD) stickers are allowed to drive onto the Naval Academy grounds. Fans are encouraged to either park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium ($5 charge to park) and take the free shuttle service over to the Naval Academy or park outside of the Academy gates and walk onto the grounds. All visitors are required to have a picture I.D. to gain access to the grounds.

Admission for Sunday’s scrimmage is free.
