UVA Lacrosse Teammate Arrested For Murder of UVA Woman
Charlottesville, VA– Following a 2:15 am 911 call regarding a possible alcohol overdose, Charlottesville Police have arrested a UVA lacrosse player, formerly of The Landon School Team where1 of the falsely accused Duke
George Huguely, from Chevy Chase, MD, has been arrested and charged with the first degree murder of fellow Lacrosse Player and UVA senior Yeardley Reynolds Love.
A source speaking on the condition of anonymity, has confirmed to blinkoncrime.com that Huguely is a member of the UVA Fraternity Delta Kappa Epsilon.
Love, a 22 year old Senior at UVA, was found by EMT and Charlottesville Police upon responding to a 911 call at the apartment she shared with team and room mate Kaitlinn Duff. It is not yet known if the call was made from the apartment or another location.
The apartment they shared at 14th NW is one block from where the Pantera shirt, confirmed to be that of murder victim Morgan Harrington, was found in November 2009.
Police have not yet released a cause of death for Ms. Love, but say her body showed signs of physical trauma.
Huguely has been committed to the Albemarle County Jail without bond pending his arraignment.

I know it is too soon to say; but is it possible that one of Dan and Gil’s biggest fears just came true!??
Whoa!!! First of all, that guy looks an awful like my 15yo son. OMG.
Second, Morgan’s Pantera shirt was found in November? I didn’t know that. And so close to this place?! OMGx2.
RIP Ms. Love. Condolences to your family and friends.
Blink, can’t wait to hear what else you have for us.
Prayers for this beautiful young woman, her family and friends. Another one gone too soon.
When did all of this occur? Over the weekend?
Coincidence or Clue?
Thanks, Blink!
For what it is worth, I know this girl’s family. I grew up in Baltimore and I believe she attended RPCS, where I went to school. She is much younger than I am, and we never went to school together, however.
Based on what I know, I don’t believe her murder is connected to Morgan. I know very little, however, and am only speculating, of course.
This is very sad. I doubt it is connected to Morgan Harrington though.
As a UVA alum who is very familiar with the area, I know 14th Street is a high traffic area near bars and where many students live and walk.
I have read on other sites that Love and Huguely were in a relationship, so this would seem to be the cause. The alcohol poisoning thing doesn’t make much sense to me though.
Either way, it is very sad and I hope they find the killers of Morgan and Yeardley meet justice.
It happened last night. They must have very solid evidence about him. The police said they did not live together at the apartment (hers) but that he lived close by. Not sure if they were still dating. Don’t see the relevance of mentioning the falsely accused duke players. Just tragic and makes me feel literally sick as an alumnus.
Redly-
Be fair my friend. He was interviewed in the field about it and his Father was quoted in regards to it as well..
“Regardless of what winds up happening, you have to learn from this experience and take what you can from it,” George Huguely Sr. said. “You always have to remember and can’t let yourself be in a situation where something like this could happen.”
Definitely warranted the mention.
B
Hugeley apparently comes from a very very privileged background.
Yep.
Who wants to know my guess at his attorney?
B
I heard that he was an Anthropology major. I wonder if he ever had any connection to AF.
Like you stated, this happened a block from 15th St where Morgan’s T-shirt was found. But – if you look on the map, even though it’s just a block from 15th St. it is several blocks down from the corner of 15th/Grady. Still though, it is relevant that the entire area there is occupied by many UVA privileged students and/or athletes.

“retropetro2323 (5/3/2010 at 1:27 PM) Report Violation my friend went to school at uva. just talked to him…. said Huguely did a lot of drugs and had an abusive past with Love…. said he got real messed up…. they got in an argument and he strangled her to death. pretty sad. pretty girl”
I wonder if there is a drug connection?
Don’t think it will be the townie attorney of choice for athletes. She would be out of her league in a murder case I suspect. More likely Hugley’s folks will get him the Northern Virgnian attorney who somehow obtained a very reduced conviction for the UVa student who stabbed a local firefighter to death 21 times awhile back. That was a outrage worthy of your fury, Blink. Wasn’t reading you back then. Not sure if you covered it.
Did not, lol on the “worthy of your fury”
B
Sorry, I do know her family, but she did not attend Roland Park, as I had thought.
Who wants to know my guess at his attorney?
B
I’ll bite…who???

So the fact that he’s a DKE brother interests me. Your last piece on Morgan made this mention:
“Carr’s Hill was the former site of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity until 2003 when it was moved by the city to it’s current location on Culbreth.”
The Fraternity mention interested me as a clue at the time. This may very well be a completely separate incident but then again, maybe not. I know my Fraternity held one of our rituals out in the woods in Jefferson National Forest twice a year. I wonder if the DKE’s have ever held rituals, brother retreats or public parties @ Anchorage Farm? My condolences to the Love family.
I know EXACTLY where this is going. “The Skulls” Right?
B
Redly, I find it relevant because of what could be learned from the Duke parents, whom Huguely’s folks likely know, in terms of providing a strong defense for their son.
Devastating news and I am so sorry for the families, teammates, and friends.
Can we trust they have obtained Huguely’s DNA already and will share with VSP?
Let’s not shift our attention from finding Morgan’s killer(s). If not Huguely, then today is a great day for the perp(s).
Not to draw too many conclusions (long time reader, first time poster), but I notice that Mr. Huguely’s father is in the lumber supply business. It also appears that there are a few lumber wholesalers in the AF and North Garden areas around Charlottesville. Is it possible that Mr. Huguely could have some intimate knowledge of this area of the world vis a vis his father’s business? And, if this is a possibility, then Miss Love could have been “in the loop” about Morgan, threatened to go to the cops, and boom! violent outburst results in her death…
Yep, that’s a long shot definitely. But it’s not totally out of the scope of possibility.

———————————-
It is .4 miles to Grady and .1 mile to 15th street from 222 14th street.
According to mapquest, it takes 1 minute to get there by car.
If you use mapquest, you can see that you can get from 14th street to 15th street on 5 different x-over streets.

Blink, I think that this crime is the attention that UVA has been trying to avoid in Morgan’s death. Unfortunately it is now smack dab in the middle of a crime that involves 2 UVA students. With this latest – - shall we call it murder? – - will this bring VSP closer to looking at how local LE handled Morgan’s death considering the proximity of the shirt to this latest crime scene? I wonder if this young mans frat ever had parties out on AF or nearby farms.
HLN is reporting that the 2 were romantically involved.
Yeardley was found by her roommate. She thought it could be alcohol related (again, as reported by HLN). There is evidence of physical trauma but not reporting what her injuries are.
Wonder if GH has ties to AF?????
Prayers to Yeardley and her family xo
I know EXACTLY where this is going. “The Skulls” Right?
B
Que? Not sure I’m following your reference. The Deke’s aren’t quite secret society but they seem to be a lot “higher class” than my group was Most frats, though seriously do some things outdoors. That may be part of initiation rights, a brother retreat (which is supposed to be a “bonding” experience but is really just a bunch of guys getting completely wasted and camping out), or sometimes they hold parties outdoors as a break from the typical college party. If Deke has used AF for anything of this sort, then maybe this guy could be tied to Morgan as well. It’s probably isolated but I wouldn’t rule it out.
Blink, I would bet this will be a ‘rough sex’ defense. Reminiscent of Robert Chambers.
She likely died from some neck trauma.
She was found in bed, and I have a source telling me she was close to full lavidity when she was turned over.
I wonder if that is where she died, but I assume so.
B
Just two points of clarification:
1. The shirt’s location and this crime scene are many blocks apart.
2. The DKE house didn’t move. The address was changed.
On a map yes, cutting through the paths, no.
Of course they did not physically move the house- heh?

The Dom Starcia Lacrosse Camp is located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Coach Starcia is the Men’s Lacrosse Coach at the University of Virginia, which won the 1999 and 2003 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. At the Starcia Camp, players will build on their foundation of technique and skill with coaching from Coach Starcia and his championship staff of assistants. The four day camp, from June 13th-16th, will give high school players the opportunity to learn from one of the most successful coaches in the NCAA, and will also give the prospective college athletes a chance to impress the coaches and get noticed. Over half of the current roster of University of Virginia lacrosse players, were campers at Coach Starcia’s camp.
http://www.sportscampconnection.com/lacrosse_camp.php
This may be nothing but does anybody know if the LaCrosse players do strength training and had a reason to be in the parking lot that night like the basketball players were?
In 1994 Roy Black married Lisa Lea Haller, who was a juror in the William Kennedy Smith trial. They met and began dating several months after the acquittal of Kennedy Smith
No F’n Way
Lol.
B
Physical trauma? I’d be interested in knowing if that includes some of the same physical trauma Morgan was put through.
So close to where Morgan’s shirt was found?
I don’t know. Sounds TOO coincidental. I think this is a clue.
Two women with 2 years age difference both murdered with obvious physical trauma in the UVA very immediate area within 6 months?
From http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/college/2010/05/03/2010-05-03_virginia_mens_lacrosse_player_george_huguely_charged_with_murder_of_womens_playe.html
“In a statement, police also said that Love and Huguely had had a past relationship but have not released further details of the incident. “Police are treating the case as a homicide investigation at this time,” the statement said.
Just maybe….she is the GF who found Morgan’s shirt, too afraid to go to the police so puts shirt where LE can find it, breaks up with him after we she discovered, he finds out what she did anyways and got mad and she meets the same side of this monster that Morgan was unfortunate enough to meet?
If they didn’t have his DNA before, they should have it now.
Yet another life taken too early. Prayers to her loved ones.
Roy Black??? Why him? He is in Florida.
He would be on my short list- among a few others. William Kennedy Smith…remember that case?

my thoughts and prayers are going out to the family, friends and teammates of this young girl at the prime of her life. my sister plays division one womens lacrosse and this hits home for me. i texted her to see if she had heard anything and she said she would call me back when she got out of class.
the lacrosse community on the east coast is very tight knit, especially in the mid-atlantic region. i have a feeling we are going to be hearing a lot about this tragedy in the coming days, especially since the NCAA’s are coming up soon.
it is very common for fraternities and sororities to hold rituals out in the woods. i dont think its out of the question that dke or maybe a skull&bones secret society could have done rituals at AF.
normally, those who are members of skull and bones are very involved in the college, are on sports teams, or on other important committees. many of them also come from wealthy families.
i think it’s important that this is all checked into very thoroughly by the authorities. this just doesn’t immediately pass the smell test to me. of course, this kid is probobaly already lawyered up and will be instructed not to speak anymore.
Grandpa or Dad.

While these are not enormous donations, they yield some light into the family background. Love comes from a well connected family as well.
Chief Longo said that he could not comment on what lead investigators to George Huguely. (http://www.nbc29.com/Global/story.asp?S=12416452)
What did lead LE to him so, so quickly??? They can’t comment. Wonder if that is because it is part of Morgan’s investigation.
Whoa JF.
Huguely was interviewed regarding the incident, he played with one of the “declared innocent” and his Father, who is quoted upthread” also spoke on the issue publicly.
George Huguely, Jr. has been arrested for first degree murder. As far as I can read, my article specifically states that the Duke Lacrosse Player (s) he is associated with was falsely accused.
You were rude and out of line.
That said, I do think you have a point in the middle of that flogging that my title was too ambiguous, so I changed it. I said ambiguous, not innacurrate, because it was not. Your welcome.
Nest time, try .. Blink, have you considered… (insert my respectful position on the matter here).
At the time, I am on record to say the arrests of those men was a career ender for that pompous jerkwad.

I know both areas well. My sister lived in the apartments across 15th St. from the shirt discovery site; my spouse lived in today’s victim’s building; tons of friends lived in the area in between. There’s no major shortcut.
I seriously doubt there’s a connection to the Morgan Harrington case.
Rather, it is a horrible tragedy in its own right.
I tend to agree with you, outside the shirt location-
B
Judi wrote: “What did lead LE to him so, so quickly??? They can’t comment. Wonder if that is because it is part of Morgan’s investigation.”
I think more likely is that the victim’s roommates pointed the cops in the right direction.
Blink, would you define first degree murder for those of us w/o legal backgrounds? And is it fair to say this guy has been on the radar before? Or no? ~ JJ
OK I shot off that last post without thinking. I know from looking it up that first degree is willful and premeditated, right? So this, then, is not likely a drinking-rage-in-the-moment sort of scenario but instead for them to charge him with first, they have to believe there was premeditation? As in motive and intent to carry out, or something like that? ~ JJ
Blink – If I am not dreaming, wasn’t there talk waaay back at the beginnig about Morgan’s ex being an athlete and there was a lax connection there? Is there a way to link Morgan to this guy?
On belief.
B
This has been another extraordinarily sad, difficult, and devastating day here at UVA. Like so many other people in/around the University community, I am overwhelmed with this latest news.
Words fail me. Please understand if I take a break from posting here for a few days.
Before I leave, though, I wanted to let Chad (? – the postmark was from California) know that I picked up the Morgan’s ROCKS package today (there was only one package; there had been two notices for its pick-up while I was out-of-town) and said a small prayer as I lovingly placed it at Morgan’s memorial on the Copeley Rd. bridge. It is another beautiful tribute to Morgan among so many others on Copeley.
Juliemooly, I placed this tribute directly in front of the bright, aqua-blue lantern so you’ll know where to take pictures. [It is a glass dish containing rocks and a purple Remember Morgan Harrington bracelet.]
Peace, everyone.
Just peace.
Thanks for changing the title of the article. I saw the ambiguity — also saw what was trying to be said, but the revised title is more straightforward. I think that raising the view of the accused and his father on the Duke incident is fair, given the public nature of their prior statements. It was the headline that caused confusion and seemed inflammatory and you corrected it, so thanks.
Why thank you, I agree.
I need to keep reminding people that both George Huguey s were quoted in a article titled:
DUKE SCANDAL HITS HOME.
That’s more than an established reference point.
B
Not a DKE but those boys brand themselves. I have friends whose son pledged and they were proud of it. Oh yeah I am an SAE. We don’t do that s***.
I hate what her family is going through and what is to come.
UVA mens lacrosse team played an exhibition at Navy on October 18, 2009.
Wonder if they left that morning or the night before?
I don’t think NCAA rules allow them to be put up on behalf of UVA, but dunno..

I think it is because it is so early in this case. The police always look at boyfriend/spouse first. I would bet anything he and the victim had a very troubled relationship that her and his friends knew about — maybe even some abuse issues in the past. Heck, he may have been with her at a party or in bars that night with lots of other people. The strange thing is the 1st degree charge. That does mean they think they have evidence already that shows premeditation and that they were comfortable enough with it to charge him with that immediately instead of just charging him with something lesser and then upgrading it once they had their evidence in a row. Maybe he told someone he was going to do it or had threatened her and the roommates knew it. I don’t know.
I doubt morgan knew him from before. He went to school in an elite private school just outside DC, nowhere near roanoke (I am assuming he didn’t transfer in but that is just an assumption).
Just an FYI….I believe the suspect is George Huguely III.
“Regardless of what winds up happening, you have to learn from this experience and take what you can from it,” George Huguely Sr. told the paper. “You always have to remember and can’t let yourself be in a situation where something like this could happen.”

(quote from father of suspect made prior to murder of Yeardley Love)
I am of the belief that this is a very tragic occurrence in its own right, but unlikely to be connected to Morgan. I agree with Redly’s post at 5:48 p.m. tonight with respect to the quickness in the charge.
PS….I think somewhere he was referred to as GH Jr. I just wanted to point it out in my previous post.

Yes they can put them up the night before games and often do. The football team even does it before home games — though ZI doubt the lacrosse team had the budget for that. They play all over the east coast though. Annapolis is perhaps close enough to conceivably let them bus it that morning if it was a late afternoon/night game. UVA has/had what is probably the best lacrosse program in the country. Only the cuse, cornell and johns hopkins compare.
Out of season they can put them up? You sure? I dont even think they can practice yet, officially?

Not sure out of season but I think so blink. They even take the hoops team to Europe every few years to play. Here is more info on the October 18 scrimmage. It was actually a double header and the first game was at 1. It is a 3 hour drive so it is certainly conceivable they drove it, whether they could have put them up or not. If they left at 8 or so, that would be plenty of time — especially for a game that did not count in the record books.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA- The Virginia men’s lacrosse program will conclude its fall scrimmage schedule on Sunday by traveling to Annapolis, Md., to take on Navy and Team USA in a doubleheader scrimmage at Rip Miller Field, located on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy.
UVa will square off with Navy at 1 p.m., immediately followed by a tilt with one of two U.S. Men’s Lacrosse National Training Teams. The U.S. Men’s Lacrosse National Training Team is currently comprised of 40 players who will be vying for one of the Federation of International Lacrosse-mandated 23 roster spots. The weekend of Oct. 18 is the second of three training weekends this fall for the team before it is cut to its mandatory size in preparation for the FIL World Championship in Manchester, England, July 10-24, 2010.
Former UVa midfielder and current member of Major League Lacrosse’s Boston Cannons, Matt Poskay, is the lone Cavalier alum on the 40-player training roster. Poskay, a second team All-American for the Cavaliers in 2006, was also named to the NCAA Championships All-Tournament team after UVa swept through the season on its way to a perfect 17-0 season and the program’s fourth national championship.
The 40-man training roster will be split into two squads and ACC foe Maryland will join the five-team field.
A note for fans traveling, only cars with Department of Defense (DoD) stickers are allowed to drive onto the Naval Academy grounds. Fans are encouraged to either park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium ($5 charge to park) and take the free shuttle service over to the Naval Academy or park outside of the Academy gates and walk onto the grounds. All visitors are required to have a picture I.D. to gain access to the grounds.
Admission for Sunday’s scrimmage is free.
