UVA Lacrosse Teammate Arrested For Murder of UVA Woman

Charlottesville, VA– Following a 2:15 am 911 call regarding a possible alcohol overdose, Charlottesville Police have arrested a UVA lacrosse player, formerly of The Landon School Team where1 of the falsely accused Duke Lacrosse team played in High School and 4 others were on the Duke roster.

George Huguely

George Huguely, from Chevy Chase, MD, has been arrested and charged with the first degree murder of fellow Lacrosse Player and UVA senior Yeardley Reynolds Love.

A source speaking on the condition of anonymity, has confirmed to blinkoncrime.com that Huguely is a member of the UVA Fraternity Delta Kappa Epsilon.

Yeardley Love

Love, a 22 year old Senior at UVA, was found by EMT and Charlottesville Police upon responding to a 911 call at the apartment she shared with team and room mate Kaitlinn Duff. It is not yet known if the call was made from the apartment or another location.

Yeardley and Kaitlinn

The apartment they shared at 14th NW is one block from where the Pantera shirt, confirmed to be that of murder victim Morgan Harrington, was found in November 2009.

Police have not yet released a cause of death for Ms. Love, but say her body showed signs of physical trauma.

Huguely has been committed to the Albemarle County Jail without bond pending his arraignment.

While I do not believe this case is connected to Morgan, I have to admit that upon clicking on this link I was immediately struck by this photo.

Does anyone else see someone that we may have seen pictured with Morgan, or am I getting carried away?

Blink – If I am not dreaming, wasn’t there talk waaay back at the beginnig about Morgan’s ex being an athlete and there was a lax connection there? Is there a way to link Morgan to this guy?

    On belief.

Zarpisimo, yes, I am with you. I remember lacrosse talk, too, at the same time as the BB player talk. Blink must be referring to a poster named “On Belief” who posted around the same time as “Open Your Eyes.”

I do not know what to think. I am devastated to see another life with so much promise extinguished, just tossed aside.

Observer, I’ve thought of you lots today. I am sorry to see you need a break (because it means this is hard for you), but I understand and wish peace right back at you, along with tons of support.

I knew a bunch of lacrosse players when I was at UVA, and it was not unusual for them to go up to a game the night before. Don’t remember if out of season makes a difference, though.

One thing that may be key, though, is that they were playing Navy, which is Annapolis, MD, on Oct. 18. Many of the players are from that area (including the accused), and it was my experience that when they are playing in close proximity to home, they will often spend the night before at their parents’ house. Players from the area will often host players that do not have family in the area. It is a big deal to them, and probably was a big party since it was the off-season. I think it is quite probable that Mr. Huguely spent the night of Oct. 17, 2009 tucked into his bed at his parents’ house.

Kind of doubt its connected, but keep in mind Morgan was also supposed to be back in Roanoke around 12:00 to work on some homework and banking issues with her daddy if I recall the news correctly. Don’t know if they (Lacrosse team) would drive up for a day game the same day, but not to difficult to find out. Think it would be a pretty early call for a 1:00 pm match if it is a three hour drive.

Of course its a hell of a lot easier to party hardy when you are in your twenties and to get up(or stay up until) the next morning and run a 10K or any other sort of activity. After all, didn’t Joran Van Der Sloot go to school and ace a test the morning after Natalee Holloway went missing, all coca lines and jello shooters rumors aside.

Never know? Good god, I actually landed a job back in the 80′s during a Saturday morning interview and without even getting a wink of sleep the previous evening. Technical job as well, not sweeping the floors.

P.S. Didn’t make it out west of RVA on Saturday. Had wanted to travel up around NG and AF. Unfortunately house maintenance and pet care issues won the day.

Uggggg…. as a C’Ville resident, mom of college age daughter and a local that’s still reeling from Morgan’s unsolved murder, this is unreal. It sounds like an angry boy lost control. But doesn’t Morgan’s murder sound like an angry boy that lost control, too? I wouldn’t be shocked if this is Morgan’s murderer, but it’s probably doubtful – just a horrible coincidence and loss of another beautiful girl.

    Yes. It Does.
Keep in mind, this boy was at his residence when he was arrested. He left her there to die, or killed her there.
    OR
He allegedly killed her somewhere else and took her there.

No matter how you slice it, why not seek help?

Devastating, simply devastating. Too many kids at too many collges have ended up dead… I know it happens all over the country but VA schools have certainly had their share. I am so sorry for you too.

A closing thought: while driving home this evening a thought crossed my mind that has perhaps already crossed the minds of some others here in CV today:

It feels like an evil has descended on Charlottesville/UVA. I don’t mean an “evil spirit” or anything like that. Just evil.

The only way I know to fight evil is to do good.

to lily Re: the RV lot on Saturday night –

there is an athletes-only dining hall inside JPJ arena. normally, the athletes park in the JPJ parking lot while eating dinner at the dining hall. On nights when there is a concert at JPJ, the athletes have to park in the RV lot next to the track and walk to JPJ to eat. However, the athlete dining hall is only open Sunday night thru Thursday night, so athletes would only be parked in the RV lot on a Saturday night if they had a practice going on. I doubt that Lax would have a practice saturday night before a sunday game, although a team meeting to go over strategy would not be out of the question.

that said, i don’t think these two crimes are connected.

What a beautiful young woman to loose her life to her ex boy-friend.
The time has come for mature adults to put a stop to allowing drugs and alcohol anywhere in the vicinity of a college or university.
We are now reaping the results of parents not being parents to their children and the political correctness of never making them responsible for their acts.
The Universities around country are going to have to make drastic changes regarding the housing for young women. They are going to have to force all women to be housed on campus or at their parents residence. Those that live on campus will need curfews of 10:00 P.M. on school nights and no males allowed into rooms period.
This will not stop until we quit giving sports figures on every college campus all the breaks they get. College is not about sports but is about getting an education. Society has lost its way.

New Blog from Gil Harrington for May 3rd

    ——————————————————————————–
Returning from the other side of the world is always difficult. You are tired and jet lagged and regardless try to jump right back into a full schedule. I was prepared for that challenge. What I was not prepared for was being back at square one with my grief for Morgan. It was like her murder had just happened, the rawness and the pain shocking in intensity.

Before I left for Zambia I had managed to find a place of some peace and equilibrium, fragile though it was. Suddenly, I was overwhelmed, bombarded by the obscenity of our loss anew. How could someone have brutally murdered our shiny wonderful girl? How could this have happened to her? To us?

I felt besieged, attacked. Even small things grated. Photos of Morgan that I had previously found refuge in, her sweet face all around our house, now a reproach not comfort. “Why me? You didn’t keep me safe. He walks free and I am only dust in your hands.” The unfairness and the waste of her great promise just infuriating.

I guess I need some time. Time to make all the bargains and adjustments necessary to cushion this mortal blow to our family- again. Time to relinquish all the dreams and plans, the assumptions about a future- again.

I am tired. It is tempting to give up, but I am not so flat busted that I can allow his evil to go unchecked. Will dig deep. I can find tomorrow at least, sure of that much.
    241, My little Mog

    Judi-

I purposely stayed away from Gil’s post today.

It is the anniversary of a great loss for me and my family.

I awake and spend the day wounded. I do not know when that ends, but IT IS.

I remind myself of what I wish was different. Then is now, all over again.

I remind our young children of her. They are proud I do not choke, and they have smiles now.

I can still hear her voice.

I took your call anytime, in any meeting, and I remember the last one, vividly.

I can still lament my last regret.

If you waited until I got back, I am forever grateful, although I know you had many to wait for.

I can never thank you enough for the gift of being there. I hate that children in need sleep in your old bed.
I told your Mom, she rolled her eyes at me because she is much smarter.

It was the purest of faith, love and hope.

I would add pain to that embroidery that hangs in our homes, but I do not embroider and you would not hear of it anyway.

I am so very proud of you, as if I am the benchmark for proud, in your honor.

I love, love you. I miss you every day

In our sorrow, we had the benefit of saying goodbye.

I do believe the loss is different.

I never want confirmation. I never want to weigh the options.

I want to celebrate and avenge those that left us without the benefit of goodbye.

I celebrate Morgan today. I say that what happened to her, requires us to act.

No benefit of goodbye on this Earth, is a call to action, in my belief.

Chocolate cake and purple skittles my darling #34.

  28. In Memory of Gini says:

    Blink,

Several things have come to mind with this latest arrest.

1 – Not all murderers are RSO, Drug dealing, hungry musician, locals. Some murderers can be rich, athletic, future oriented students. Mental Health and emotional stability knows no difference in culture, income, social status or education.

2 – The irony (if it is irony) that George and his dad commented on the Duke rape story shows that it was on their minds enough to be interviewed on that incident. Why him? Why did his dad make the comments that he did? Did this kid (at the time) have a reason this meant something to him besides the connection to lacrosse?

3 – I was also wondering how does the RSO issue work for students? Are they required to be registered in Charlottesville if they go to school here? Does their underage record follow them to a University like UVA?

4 – This being said, I know that a possible RSO (or 2) in North Garden has been a theory on who may have murdered Morgan. Has LE looked at the RSO’s that are around the University? I was searching the VSP Registry this morning (zip 22904) and noticed that there was 1 particular fellow who lives smack dab in the middle of the circumference of JPJA and the location of Morgan’s shirt/recent murder. He works for UVA but not near the main campus.

  29. fish says:

I do believe there are a tremendous amount of drugs and alcohol that are being abused and couple that with an inablility to control one’s rage or impulses, well things just escalate.
Someone needs to start a college program to inform these students that their frontal lobes are still forming and adding drugs and drinking doesn’t help. Chad?

And, do not the student athletics have to take a pee-test?
Not, saying he was under the influence but what the hell happened?

It is all too much too soon.
Makes me frightened for my own.

I picked up my teenage daughter yesterday from lacrosse practice and told her of Yeardley’s murder. Her mouth fell open and said “why?” All I could think of was that this could be my baby girl someday. The horror her family must be going through right now and forever.

Why is another beautiful, loving, kind young woman the victim of a violent crime at the hands of a man? Why? My heart breaks for her family. I am still shaking from what happened to beautiful, sweet Morgan in my beloved hometown. Now this? My prayers go out to her family and continue to go out to Morgan’s as well.

    ———————————————————————

You know, another example of how things are broke. How does an RSO get a job with a University, I don’t care what it’s doing – you are placing them around the a bunch of pretty, young women who they should be keeping RSO’s as far as possible away from? Also, I think that RSO’s should NOT be allowed to live within so many miles of ANY school, I don’t care if it’s elementary or college or anywhere in between, for the same reason I just stated.

  34. Mom3.0 says:

Yesterday, Gil wrote of her new- found grief and unbearable pain in finding the strength to go on in Morgan’s unfathomable absence.

Blink, you shared, that yesterday, was also a day of unimaginable pain and grief for you, even though time has moved on, you sometimes struggle to remember the beauty of your love ones life.

Gil’s words, and your own, both so carefully written, so full of grief and despair but intertwined with hope and love impacted me greatly.

In answer to your words, I want to remind you both, that you are not alone in your grief, your families share more than your love and memories, and although it may seem that you are often alone in your struggle to balance love and loss, you are not.

I know that neither you nor Gil, are Ozzy Osbourne fans, but when I feel overwhelmed, this song comforts me by reminding me that I need not carry the weight alone. I hope you both can find comfort in the lyrics as well.

This has been an awful year for Charlottesville. I work at UVa and we had a moment of silence at our monthly meeting for Yeardly and her family. Then, I had to check the “deceased” box to update her medical record. How very, very sad. All of UVa mourns for her and her family.

  36. lizzy says:

Dear Texas Grandpa, I appreciate your desire to protect young women. My sister went to a women’s college in the late 60s and early 70s, with rules much like those you suggest, as well as the requirement of wearing demure dresses to class. Unfortunately, it didn’t really protect women from the criminal element, and butcher-paper-wrapped body parts of some young women were strewn around that town.

While the homicides at UVA are tragic, and we must do better, murder rates in the US since 2000 are actually lower than any time since 1970 (I don’t know about before that). The rates below are per 100,000. Various sources give different numbers, but all show similar trends. (Sorry the text wrapping is a little off, but I think this is still legible.)

In 1980, when I was an undergrad, rates peaked at almost twice what they are today. BUT we didn’t hear as much about it because we didn’t have the internet; those were the last days of computer punch cards.

We must teach young women to be smart and aware, not wrap them and put them away. I do truly appreciate your desire to protect our young women, and I hope that you extend that to the education and protection of young men as well.

As far as the boyfriend, I have nothing to offer that hasn’t already been stated. I do believe there is a window of time in most boyves life where we can teach him things that prevent this kind of result regardless of the disposition of the boy, but I don’t know what exactly the magical elixer of teachings is (respect for self, for others, for life, curtailing anger, avoiding drink, drugs) or when the window closes or if it can be reopened later. All I know is that we are losing some of our most promising citizens of the world to an epidemic of violence. And we as a culture don’t know where to even start to prevent it in the future. I guess we just need to start–and adjust later. Just start in any way you can–today–right now.

I believe the UVa athletes are drug-tested. Often and invasively. Had a friend on the field hockey team a couple of years ago who told me this. It was something like every week you had to go pee in a cup with someone watching you. If they do it for one sport, I’d assume they’d have to do it for all others

  46. Judi says:

So, how do you accidently kill someone in a manner where the physical trauma is immediately apparent and then accidently leave her to die and accidently forget to call for help?

I am going to assume that with how quick the arrest came, it is pretty cut and dry. With that said, I do not care if he as a spotless past or what, if he killed her, then he deserves what he gets. He offered her no mercy while beating her to death, why should he receive any mercy?

    The violence has to stop.

  47. Slowroller says:

well-well…imho, this entitled young creep has just done the killer(s) of Morgan a huge favor, even if it is just momentarily taking away some of the spotlight…

  48. Twinkletoes says:

“Accident with a tragic outcome” is not very creative or original. How does one accidentally strangle someone? Of course, the rough sex defense. This is a sham, but even if it weren’t, consent is not a defense to murder in any of our states (last time I looked was a few years back, so please speak up if you know any place where this defense has worked). As if the crime itself weren’t a direct enough flight to Hell, this defense puts him in first class seating on an SR-71 Blackbird piloted by Beelzebub himself.

He punched a hole in her door.

He kicked a hole in her door.

He beat her and killed her.

He was on probation for a separate incident.

Money does not make her any less dead, or change what will be his life behind bars.

How does one get that feeling of omnipotence?

It is amazing how strong people really are. We hope and pray we will never have to know our own strenghts, but when tragedy strikes we just suit up and prepare to fight. As much as I admire The Harrington’s and Blink’s strength I know I never want to have to be as strong as they have become. Heavy hearts and heavy burdens build courage, hope, love and the ability to confront our fears head on.
Blink- you have used your heavy heart to teach us all to learn our own strengths through compassion for those who are suffering. You took your pain and built courage, hope, love and have taught so many to confront our fears and fight for justice. Your wise words are full of honor and respect and that my friend is what brings us all back everyday. May you find peace today and may a memory bring you a smile that warms your heart and fills it with joy.

    Ty friend
