UVA Lacrosse Teammate Arrested For Murder of UVA Woman

Charlottesville, VA– Following a 2:15 am 911 call regarding a possible alcohol overdose, Charlottesville Police have arrested a UVA lacrosse player, formerly of The Landon School Team where1 of the falsely accused Duke Lacrosse team played in High School and 4 others were on the Duke roster.

George Huguely

George Huguely, from Chevy Chase, MD, has been arrested and charged with the first degree murder of fellow Lacrosse Player and UVA senior Yeardley Reynolds Love.

A source speaking on the condition of anonymity, has confirmed to blinkoncrime.com that Huguely is a member of the UVA Fraternity Delta Kappa Epsilon.

Yeardley Love

Love, a 22 year old Senior at UVA, was found by EMT and Charlottesville Police upon responding to a 911 call at the apartment she shared with team and room mate Kaitlinn Duff. It is not yet known if the call was made from the apartment or another location.

Yeardley and Kaitlinn

The apartment they shared at 14th NW is one block from where the Pantera shirt, confirmed to be that of murder victim Morgan Harrington, was found in November 2009.

Police have not yet released a cause of death for Ms. Love, but say her body showed signs of physical trauma.

Huguely has been committed to the Albemarle County Jail without bond pending his arraignment.

Gee, just watched that clip. What is it about certain people that makes them appear almost arrogant in such a time. If this were my kid I would have had to have been physically aided to even be walking out of there. Humility certainly had a place but was not evident at all in the clip. Praise the Lord that Yeardly Love has been delivered from this world of much human violence…as well as much humanity and love for others. Young George, however, will now be at the mercy of human justice…it could be hell on earth and rightfully so. Blink, when I first started reading here and became a fan of you and the other folks on here who are so intelligent in this area, I asked, “Even if a lawyer knows the client is guilty, will they still defend them?” I cannot remember your response but it was an honest one I do remember that. Now it seems that not only will certain lawyers defend a client that they know is guilty, but certain ones will also “craft” a defense. Oh my…I could not sleep at night if that were my job. No amount of money could ease my conscience. Thanks to all of you who are so dedicated to finding justice for all and for obviously having a strong dedication to moral goodness or simply doing what is right and good! Praying for all involved in this horrible situation.

Blink, do you believe that reporting on this case and discussing it in the context that it “could” be related to Morgan’s murder is responsible? I read the Hook article, and some references here, and it would appear that forcing a link could be truly harmful to Morgan’s case, especially at this point in the investigation. Has it come to this point out of frustration, or wishful thinking? I certainly hope not, as Morgan’s killer would ultimately have the upper hand in this scenario.

I can state as a fact that VSP maintains these homicides are completely unrelated.

Ragdoll, I never knew all that stuff about the steroids. thank you.

My neighbors kids went years ago to UVA. She did not know about this, but she asked why did not the girl break up with the boy. I said it sounds sort of like she did off and own. She then said well why did she not report him. Well you know, that some times backfired and the abusers come back and kill them anyhow. You cant keep them away. She apparantly never watches Miss “Nancy.”

She said that school even a long time ago, you could find men lying on the street passed out from alcohol and people would walk over them.

I agree with Texas Grandfather. We need to bring back the old days where alcohol not allowed and maybe you would have to stay in dorms where they would check you. I had to stay in my room in college for a week at night just because i came home one or two minutes late from a date and alcohol a no no. This was in sixtys.

Here is more food for thought…..

How did he know if her roomates were home or not when he entered their aparment OR if they would come home in the middle of his beating? What would have happened then? Would he have killed them too (or rather beat them up so bad that they died but of course, he wouldn’t have intended to kill them either, you know). He cannot possibly say that it was an accident. All that he could say is that he didn’t mean to kill her, just mean to beat her up really bad I guess??? He was going to teach her for dumping him, huh? Anyway, how will the jury feel about that being that he left her there to die in a pool of blood and didn’t call 911, oh yeah, and after emailing her threats?

What a load of crock. Another violent person, another young life gone. Some people are incapable of such violent behaviour, some people hide the violence which is right there under the skin waiting to poke it’s evil head.

Wonder how he was raised? With all that money, was he spoiled, did he get everything he wanted in life handed to him on a silver platter? When he messed up, did his parents buy him out of trouble? Did he think the world and all of it’s possessions, women included, was his for the taking and when she dumped his sorry a**, he didn’t know how to cope with not getting what he wanted?

  7. lizzy says:

Gigi, Someone I love was once (falsely) charged with a horrendous crime. One attorney refused to take the case because he thought guilt was obvious; the one we eventually used would only take the case as long as he could maintain some shred of belief in innocence. The case (which carried on for almost a year before charges were finally dropped–although with our consent the full truth was never made public to protect the victim) changed some people, and the first attorney is now a judge, and a better one for having watched that case unfold. I believe ultimately got a more true understanding of the value of presumption of innocence, and of the role race may have played in his own reactions.

My point is simply that we must have defense attorneys willing to take on the most dubious cases in order to have the balance needed for our system of justice to work. That does not, however, mean they must be crafty and dishonest. Or that all of us could have the stomach for it.

  8. lizzy says:

edit–I believe that attorney ultimately got a more true understanding—

  9. MsL says:

My opinion only but I agree with LE that there is no connection in these cases. Why? As quickly as this guy was caught, I just cannot believe he would have so thoroughly covered his tracks had he been responsible for Morgan’s disappearance and death. Again, my opinion only, but I am guessing Yeadley’s roommates knew that he had been trouble for her in the past and put LE on his trail. Maybe there had been a confrontation between them earlier in the evening.

i think the accident the defense is refering to is something GH wasnt directly involved in, in fact, GH broke down her door in an effort to stop YL from ingesting those deadly drugs she was about to take, found he was a little late, and tried to shake them out of her…i of course am being fecetious, but nothing will surprise me now…

The current news story online doesn’t have the quote from tonight’s 6:00 news, but the reporter asked the VSP about the Lacrosse players finding Morgan’s purse the morning of October 18, 2009. The Virginia State Police confirmed it to her that yes, a UVA lacrosse playerr found it, but the VSP said that is only a coincidence as regards to Yeardly Love’s murder. They continue to say that there is no connection between the YL and MH murders. Watch newsplex.com for an updated video.

That is 100% correct juliemooly. That was confirmed to me personally by Corrine Geller this morning.

HLN was just showing part of a news conference with UVA. President says they didn’t know of George’s arrest & conviction in 2008 as it happened out of their area and they don’t do criminal checks on the students. There is a policy at the school the students must “self report”. A reporter for the Washington Post asked “IF” the school was aware that 8 of the 48 Lacrosse players had past/present charges related to being alcohol. They cut of the conference before the question was answered. Will link when it’s available…

The parents coming out of court with those quirky smiles on their faces, only bring one thing to my mind “SNOBS”. When most parents would be embarrassed and extremely hurt that a child of theirs was being charged with something so serious, and another child had loswt their life, imo, their look seems to be that they aren’t worried, back home they are well respected and have their status as well as plenty of money (they could be large donors at UVA for all we know). They have helped “George” get out of trouble before and it probably was a piece of cake that time. Afaic, they’d better get their noses outta the air this time. Their money & status means nothing right now…

I’m tired of excuses for misbehaving males re: “Oh, he had roid rage,” “Oh, he was drunk,” etc. As a former hi. school teacher and baby boomer, I can tell all of you that our society has devolved into one in which males are encouraged more and more to view women as objects. If one watches movies and tv, women are treated as victims of violence numerous times nightly on CSI, Law & Order, etc. I have a son, who is grown and was raised to respect and protect women. I also have a daughter, who dated a boy 2X in hi. school, only to have him stalk her, leave a decapitated teddy bear on our front porch, make ruts in our lawn, and even have his friends knock on our windows when she was home alone. What was her crime? She politely told the boy that although she no longer wished to date him, that she would like to continue to be friends. Until our society, and esp. the media, stop showing the nightly desecration of females, I’m afraid for my daughter and granddaughter, and all of America’s women.

    Ragdoll – re: TY, F!

I appreciated your enthusiasm for my speculation on how LE got GH’s statement confirming his part in an “altercation” so quickly. For what it’s worth – and I humbly defer to redly or another student of the law on this one – they probably went to his apartment to question him about an “incident” that had “happened earlier” at Love’s place, and informed him there was reason to believe he was there and involved.

With this dude’s capacity for conveniently blacking out, he may have thought his battered ex was still in the land of the living and considering pressing charges… who knows what GH was initially told after three swift raps likely beckoned him to the front door at 4 a.m., but he may have naively thought honesty would be the quickest way to tamp down the situation – perhaps he did not recall leaving his former girlfriend face-down in a pool of her own blood at the time he left her (uh, with her evidence-of-premeditation-laden laptop…).

Again, all just my speculation based on the urgency and methodology that drives the first 48 hours in a homicide investigation, but the lead detective had every reason to keep her hand concealed until GH put himself scuffling with/assaulting Love at the (probable) scene of the crime. The goal of the interrogation was almost certainly to nail down a confession and get GH’s statement on the books admitting he was indeed the one responsible for Love’s injuries – as such, if he was somehow unaware (or ridiculously optimistic), he may have been told post-admission that she was actually deceased.

(Note: When you’re a raging drunk who commits bombastic public crimes in the fog of drink, have your attorney on speed-dial. *ching* The More You Know…)

I thought it would be interesting to mention that at Longwood there is an honor code in alcohol abstinence. It also includes the surrounding town. I know first hand that the police stop students/people walking at night to see if they have been drinking. Now, I don’t mean to imply it doesn’t happen, but personally I have thought they have been a bit overboard at times. My daughter had to go to an alcohol class b/c she was accused of drinking & turned in to the RA.( a one evening event they were talking about) No alcohol found, she ended up admitting to it out of guilt. And I am glad for that. I just thought everyone would like to know that some schools don’t turn a blind eye.

  40. A Texas Grandfather says:

This guy has been or is on steroids. You do not get development in the neck and lower skull like shows in the picture unless this is the source. Alcohol and steroids can cause “roid rage” similar to what happened.
He also has a criminal record in another county for public intoxication and resisting arrest. The female cop had to use her tazer to subdue him. Then he gets a smart lawyer who manages to convince a judge to give him parole rather than put him in jail for six months like should have been done. Probably told the judge that he was a star athlete at the University and he deserved a break. This is what happens when we put athletics of all types on a pedistal and hand out politicaly correct sentences.
He should have been jailed and the University notified and removed from the school. Yeardley would still be alive if the criminal justice system and the University did its job.
In another direction, we think he entered the apartment through an unlocked door and then used his fist or foot to break a panel on the bedroom door and reach in and turn the turn knob to get to her.
As dective Mark Furman said when he checked the security locks at the apartment where little Brittany was abducted in Reno, “there is no security and its like going big game hunting at a zoo.”
Why was the apartment door left unlocked? Why did the lock on the bedroom door have the lowest level of protection by being a cheap turn knob on the inside.
Parents need to educate themselves on how to buy locks to protect their girls when they have an apartment away from home. Every lock on that apartment should have a double cylinder dead bolt with a one-inch bolt set into a steel reinforcing plate on the door frame and fixed with long screws into the studs to which the frame is attached. If the locks on all approved University housing were installed at that quality level, he could not have gotten in without permission. Double cylinder dead bolts require a key both inside and outside. However, the best locks cannot protect if they are not used. Look what happened to little Eve Carson at North Carolina who was kidnapped and shot because she was in her apartment with the door unlocked.

Sounds like a letter was found in Huguely’s room written to Miss Love. Also, a bloddy LAX jersey — nothing good seems to be on Mr. Huguely’s horizon.

    Such a tragedy.

Blink that description of the T-shirt and what went on with it is is pricless. Sometimes when things get a little too stoogy a little antics can create some fun.
To the baby boomer mom who was a teacher. I spent eight years as subsitute music teacher after I retired. Bad behavior in boys begins to show up by the sixth grade. Because of the threat of lawsuits, schools will not take the necessary steps to put a stop to this behavior.
We had a seventh grade student that stalked a girl. It got so bad that her mother came and asked for my help and advice. I called the little stalker into an office and told him that he would stop that behavior or if he didn’t, I was goning to have the sheriff go to his house and arrest him. I put one of my good boys in the position of caring for this little girl. He escorted her from class to class at school, but it didn’t stop until I was forced to follow through on my threat. When the sheriff’s deputy finished talking to him and his parents, things got better. No more stalking.
Texas has since enacted a law that if a child cannot be made to behave in school, they can be arrested and taken to jail. Of course we still have the bleeding hearts that think children can do no wrong and they shouldn’t be punished for bad behavior.
There has been some comments about the bad behavior of fraternity boys at the University. A long time ago, these organizations may have had some value. Its been almost sixty years since I was in college. As a freshman I got the usual invitations to pledge from several. After going to a few parties, I realized that they had nothing going for them except to hold drunken parties. This was not my style and told them to forget about having me as a part of their group.
One of the moms has taught her boys well on how to treat girls. I salute her.
The University of Virginia must be a party school. This is dangerous business. The county District Attorney should go to the proper judge and secure search warrants to search every dorm and fraternity or soriety house for alcohol and drugs. If the athletic department is encouraging the use of steroids, then some coaches need to be sent to prison.
If I were the president of the University, I would be so ashamed of this punk on my La Crose team that they would not make a public appearance and I would revoke all scholarships. Maybe the little punks could get ther message that bad behavior was not going to be tolerated.

You make me miss my Poppa everytime you post.

Sometimes, I think your a bit old school. Other times, I think Your on to something important for our society.

Ragdoll – Your “humanness” is very becoming – reading and watching the pendulum swing first one direction and then another was helpful to me who has a similar way of thinking and reacting. Thank you for staying and seeing it through to the peaceful resolution. I always enjoy your posts.

Yes University of Virginia is both – a Party school and a Tough Academic school. My daughter (who will graduate in 2 weeks (when these students would have graduated)) tells students who are visiting or considering attending UVa that it has something for everyone – if you want a good education or a good time and it excels at both. My daughter and her boyfriend don’t drink – something I’m even more thankful for today than a few days ago. Since they began dating I worry about the hurt feelings when it inevitably ends and hope, hope, hope he doesn’t become violent – but the addition of alcohol to immaturity raises that alarm to new heights yet before unconsidered.

I wish to adopt you as my grandfather (even tho you’re too young)
I like you Texas! You speak truths. We have to reach the boys and of course any badly behaving girls, while in elementary school. The violence has to stop. Society has to come together on this issue. Too many of our children are spoiled.

Grandfather, I am a Charlottesville local, did not attend the University of Virginia but I am a Cavalier football, baseball and basketball fan. I’m not a lacrosse fan, mainly because I know nothing about the sport. I’ve looked at Virginia’s roster, and I see there are 44 members on the team. I assume before the events of this weekend there were 45 members as Mr. Huguley is no longer on the roster. I quote you:

“If I were the president of the University, I would be so ashamed of this punk on my La Crose team that they would not make a public appearance and I would revoke all scholarships. Maybe the little punks could get ther message that bad behavior was not going to be tolerated.”

I ask you sir, do you think it is right to condemn 43 other young men because of the despicable act of one? Do you really advocate revoking 43 other scholarships (if they are all scholarship players) because of the despicable act of one? If your grandson was on this team, would you think it justified to revoke his scholarship and perhaps end his chance at a college education because of the despicable act of one? From comments I have read made by others, all lacrosse players have been labeled as white, privileged, never having had to work for anything in their lives, with Momma and Daddy paying for everything and always getting them out of trouble. I doubt that this description applies to all. I’m sure on this team there are probably other young men I would never want my daughter to know, but is it fair to condemn other possibly good young men because of the despicable act of one. Wasn’t this what was done at Duke? Their team as a whole was condemned and vilified on charges that were later proven not to be true, and the DA was the one who was actually guilty of wrong doing. Far different situation here, a young woman is dead and the man accused of her killing her is in jail. If there is any evidence that there are others who were aware that Mr. Huguley was a threat to Ms. Love, I think they should be dealt with harshly, even to the extent of being prosecuted if there are legal grounds for doing so, but to advocate revoking the scholarships of 43 young men with no known evidence of wrongdoing is saying they are all guilty simply by association.

I am suprised and saddened that nobody called police or came to Yeardlys defense. That was a huge apartment building that she lived in. A hole in a door was bashed in. A woman had her head smashed into a wall over and over again.

Somebody had to hear this going on.

Is this the norm like the three monkey friends, Speak no evil, hear no evil and see no evil.

Is that what our society has become. If you don’t own it don’t get yourself involved.

And imagine the one calling it in as alcohol overdose. Blood, bruses, door busted. Was this also to cover for a fellow student?

I am puzzled by behavior in this death. Puzzled and saddened.

  47. MsL says:

Grandfather, I meant to add this comment to my comments about lacrosse scholarships. I hope if there are any parents and young people reading here, both male and female, they will heed your advice. Never, never leave exterior doors unlocked. Get those deadbolt locks and invest the $2 or $3 dollars per key for each roommate. I’ll also add, do not give your boyfriend/girlfriend a key to your apartment or room if he/she does not live with you. Even the best relationship can go bad very quickly. I once questioned why Morgan would have a deadbolt lock on her bedroom door. I’ve gotten a clearer picture of why that would be when sharing an apartment. Unfortunately, in the standard apartment, interior doors are not as strong as exterior doors. A lock on a bedroom door might stop a person who is willing to just walk away if the door is locked, but it’s not going to stop someone who is willing to kick the door in. I don’t think Charlottesville is more dangerous than any college town of it’s size, but we do have sexual assaults on students and citizens reported every year. There are certainly assaults on grounds and off that are never reported. So often when we hear about an assault, the creep either entered through an unlocked window or door. If my daughter was living off grounds (campus,) I would insist that she not live on the 1st floor if at all possible. I would then inspect the apartment thoroughly to be sure there are deadbolt locks on all exterior doors and now that I understand why, I would insist that her bedroom door have a good lock. Even on upper floors, windows should have locks and those locks should be used at all time. If the building does not have central air, buy an air conditioner or fan that can be securely bolted to the window. Our springs and falls can be very hot here in Virginia, and the summers are smothering. Don’t rely on a flimsy screen to keep your child safe.

I have a friend who has related to me here locally that the UVA chapter of the DKEs has been legendary for years for their behavior. No surprise that the behavior is the kind that one usually doesn’t want to be recognized for in polite society. Our current babysitter is a HOO and she is also familiar with DKE behavior. I hate to lump people together, but there does seem to be a negative pattern in this frat. This is just heresay around town and hasn’t been confirmed by me personally. Certainly a shame if the rumors are true.

    *****

I strongly disagree with this. First of all, George Huguely is NOT a DKE. That rumor is incorrect. Also, I have known many DKEs and went to DKE events when I was an undergrad at UVA. I completely disagree that they are known for very bad behavior. I can think of several fraternities with much, much worse reputations (though that does not condone any bad behavior). Of course any time you get a large group of people together there are going to be a few assholes, but that does not mean the entire bunch is bad. I am not implying that they are complete angels, either. But to bring down an entire fraternity for the actions of one person WHO IS NOT EVEN A MEMBER is wrong.

I have seen similar comments about the lacrosse team as well, and I disagree with those comments too. Yes, there are assholes on the lacrosse team. Yes, what GH did was horrible. But there are also some great guys on the team, too. Unless it can be shown that the rest of the lacrosse team either was involved in this murder, encouraged it, or had any idea that it was going to happen and did not stop it, they should not have to suffer the consequences for one team member’s actions. I am certain they are all beating themselves up over whether there were any signs they missed or there was anything they could have done to prevent it. Both Yeardley’s family (the final decision was left up to them) and the Women’s lacrosse team have given their blessing for the Men’s season to continue. From what I have heard, continuing to play in Yeardley’s honor is how both teams feel they can best go about healing. They are the people most directly effected by this, and their opinion is good enough for me.

Cvillenative- you know I respect your input, and I agree that an entire Frat should not be blamed for ones actions.

However, as you say you have friends that are DKE’s, ask them if GH WAS a member of that frat.

Saying he is not an active member like he never was, is hair splitting, imo.

Dolce, I appreciate your kind words. It reestablishes my faith in people and their hearts. Old fashioned values do exist and I’m humbled to have found them on BOC. xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

However, I believe Blink is the one who set the standard for maintaining a beautiful heart of friendship and second chances, to say the very least. Forgiveness is hard to come by these days. She could have excommunicated me altogether. It’s about doing the right thing. I needed to step up for the right reasons. 1. Blink didn’t deserve my attacks. I jumped to conclusions and exhausted patience. 2. My son needed to see his momma in a state of humility and regret….and how to do try and make it right. The outcome may not have been favourable, but not trying at all is the crime. I am utterly ashamed.

If credit is to be given and it comes in Blink Biscuits, I hope this beautiful lady over indulges xo.

I owe all of you a debt of gratitude and prayers.

To the Love and Huguely family, I pray you find the strength to push through this dark and lonely time in your lives. xo
