Kyron Horman Missing and Endangered: Would Opening Boy Scout Perv Files Help Find Him?
Portland, Or– Kyron Horman, according to his parents, is an avid camper, beach go-er, and fisherman. While it is not known if Kyron is a cub scout, his older brother is a member of The Boy Scouts of America.
While researching for this case, and the possibility a sexual predator might be involved, I was stunned to learn a self-admitted pedophile of over 20 young boys that police are aware of, lives freely in Kyron’s community of Multnomah County Oregon.
MERIT BADGE IN SEX ABUSE
Timur Van Dykes, convicted sex offender and pedophile has been charged with over 26 crimes involving sexual abuse of minor boys since the early 80’s through 1994. They were entrusted to his care as a Boy Scout Leader and home teacher for the Mormon Church since the early 1980’s.
In a trial this past Spring, Dykes actions costs the Church of Latter Day Saints an undisclosed settlement, The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and the Pacific Cascade Council over $18 million in damages.
A $14 million sexual abuse lawsuit filed in Portland, Ore. is making headlines, due to the disturbing contents of confidential files from the Boy Scouts of America, which show that the organization knew of at least 1,000 pedophiles within the Scouts from 1965 to 1985, but hushed it up. Despite numerous sexual abuse lawsuits brought by victims against the Boy Scouts over the years, the confidential files were never obtained by plaintiffs’ attorneys, with most of the cases settled quietly out of court. Even more disturbing, the scoutmaster-pedophile, who molested the victim in the current lawsuit, confessed to Boy Scout leaders that he molested 17 Boy Scouts, but inexplicably, he was allowed to continue as a scoutmaster and have contact with boys.< ?xml:namespace prefix =”" o />
Dykes admitted to a Mormon Bishop that he had molested several young boys, but it was not the church that turned him over to police. The Bishop instructed Dykes to write letters of apology to his victims, and maintained his position within the church.
After a parent of one of the boys went to police, Dykes pled guilty to second degree sex abuse and was given probation. As a condition of his probation, he was prohibited from being around young boys. However, he was permitted to continue as a scoutmaster and molesting children until he was pulled over for a brake light malfunction in 1994 driving a van full of boyscouts headed to a camping trip.
Police ran his license, and arrested him on the spot. That was the first indication to any parent under his “leadership” that Dykes was a convicted pedophile.
That’s correct, the failure on the part of the Boy Scouts to remove Dykes and or warn parents resulted in additional victims of this monster.
PROFILE OF A PREDATORY PEDOPHILE
Who: Timur Dykes, 53
Victims: Confessed to or was convicted of molesting more than 20 boys, most of them Boy Scouts.
First conviction: Arrested in 1983 on accusations of molesting several boys. Pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree sexual abuse and received probation.
Second conviction: Charged in 1985 with molesting boys. Pleaded guilty to first-degree sexual abuse and sexual penetration with a foreign object. His sentence is unclear.
Third conviction: Found guilty in 1994 after a nine-day trial in which several boys said he molested them. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison but was released in 2005.
Today: A registered sex offender and on post-prison supervision until 2013. Listed as a transient living at Southwest First Avenue and Burnside Street.
Update: Prior to the start of the Civil trial, Dykes moved to Oswego Lake in December 2009. He is currently a resident of Multnomah county and it is unclear when he moved or registered his return. He is listed “likely to reoffend” and a predator. (see editors note following this article)
DYKES LARGER THAN LIFE
Jack Doe, (press name for sex abuse victim) the 37 year old center of the lawsuit, considered Timur Dykes “larger than life.”
The victim, identified in court documents as Jack Doe, said he looked up to his Boy Scout leader, Timur Dykes, who was a rock climber and always seemed to have advice for whatever dilemma the boy found himself in. His relationship with Dykes, whom he first met through the Church of Latter-day Saints, intensified when he became a “Webelos” — the level after a Cub Scout — and as he earned full-fledged Boy Scout status, he said. He went on 30-plus campouts with Dykes as the leader, worked on merit badges at Dykes’ apartment, and spent the night several times at the grown man’s place.
Dykes was “larger than life,” Doe said. “I just wanted to soak up his knowledge.”
According to Clark, Dykes was 25 when he met a 9-year-old Doe in 1981. Later, Doe joined a Southeast Portland Scout troop where Dykes was an assistant Scoutmaster. The troop met at a building, in the 9900 block of Southeast Caruthers Street, owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The boys also often went to Dykes’ apartment to work on merit badges or spend the night, with their parents’ approval, Clark told jurors.
“All of the parents trusted Timur Dykes because he was a Scout leader,” Clark said.
The apartment, Clark said, was like a playground for boys.
“He had ferrets,” Clark said. “He had snakes, including a boa constrictor. … He had a knife collection. He gave (Doe) french fries for breakfast on a regular basis.”
One Question: Does he have a red eyed tree frog?
BOY SCOUT PERV FILES MUST BE PUBLIC
Because the files have been used in sealed cases due to confidential settlements, only 2 attorneys have seen their contents.
The BSA maintains they kept those files to “keep track” of their leaders with sexual allegations against them in the event they tried to move and join another region. However, there is NO evidence whatsoever that BSA notified police or parents of fellow members in the same troop if a leader was accused, or even if he was removed or reassigned.
What are the chances that an allegation that was made against one of their own, resulted in additional sex abuse to other or new victims?
Staggeringly high. Which is why they do not want them released to the public. The BSA reaction to the verdict in the civil suit, which will undoubtedly bring future suits:
“We are gravely disappointed with the verdict,” Boy Scouts of America spokesman Deron Smith said in a statement obtained by CBS News Raido. “We believe that the allegations made against our youth protection efforts are not valid. We intend to appeal.”
“This is a long standing societal issue that every youth serving organization must address,” Smith said. “Based on the standard of care of that time, the BSA believes it acted responsibly and that the evidence presented during the trial does not justify the verdict.”
Late this afternoon, the H E R C U L E A N search effort for Kyron involving over 18 different counties, was halted.
Kyron’s disappearance is now classified as a criminal investigation.
I would like to present a different thought for ponder on the serial pedophile status of the *free as a bird* Dykes and peyton perv files.
What if, within those files, which would include information on Dykes and his associates , there was a destination or possible suspect that has not been searched or an individual who was not arrested for abuse because it was not reported?
An organization, founded on a position of public trust, has a responsibility to it’s public. I am floored.
There is positively no incentive outside of a moral one for the BSA to produce those files for Law Enforcement review if it leads to further negligence suits on their part.
Repeat after me Multnomah County: Investigative subpoena for cause.
You won’t get a second bite at this apple for a long time.

Hi Blink, thanks for this last piece. Is it bad that things like this don’t surprise us as much as they should anymore? I’ve been following since at least Morgan but this is my first post. I’ll tell you that’s it’s hard to think about my kids growing up and the dangers out there now that they will encounter. Makes you not want to let them out of your sight until they’re 40. I have a feeling we’re going to find out some very horrible news about little Kyron soon and like your piece here the content will sicken people. I had held out hope that he would be found and we would have a good outcome like Nadia’s. I was looking forward to Kyron presenting his red eyed tree frog science fair project on the Today show so proudly after he was found. As the days go on I fear that will not be the case and I feel so horribly for this family to endure this day after day. I pray at least that one way or another that they find out what happened so they don’t have to go another day wondering if this will be the day he comes home. I want them to have that closure and if he is alive out there I hope he’s found as quickly as possible and brought back home to his loving family.
heard about this perp on the news the other night. They gave no details. The school had no video surveillance, and he could have been mingling in the science fair.
I was at a local park bordering on city wilderness a few weeks ago, there was a man parked in a strange off-to the side parking place, alone, window down. The only people in the park for an extended time while I was there, was a party with mothers and quite a few young girls. Had a strange and uneasy feeling about that man, I glanced over a few times, he had a straight line of view but the girls and mothers were unaware as they attended their picnic duties. He rolled up the window after that, still had a view. It was strange, couldn’t see plates, couldn’t drive by going in or out of the park, perfect obscure place with a view.

I make it point to always check the Megan’s Law site and know who lives near me and those I love. It is beyond comprehension that the Church would help conceal this monster’s crimes. I guess we can only imagine that whoever took this sweet little bespectacled (oh I love little ones with glasses) boy did so for sexual reasons (also incomprehensible to most of us thankfully). Keep up the awesome work and child advocacy that you do. Kids need all the protectors they can get.

Blink- I have 5 children. My youngest 2 are 9 and 12. I won’t let them out of my sight. I make them walk together just to get the mail= which is just located in my side yard. I trust NO ONE these days except my family. It’s pitiful that this is what the world has come to- but it’s a reality. You must talk with your children on how to respond in all kinds of negative situations that you really would never have dreamed of when we were growing up.

So Timur Dykes lives about a 21 minute drive from Kyron’s school. I wonder if her has friends nearby or any connection whatsoever to that area. There is a James Dykes who lives 4 miles from the school. I am trying to determine if he may have children in the school.

I am overwhelmed by a sense of shock and sadness. They have a file of past offenders or potential/possible offenders that is sealed?
What is going on? Is there not a place where our children are protected, not one place where their safety comes first? Not in church, not in school, not in boys and girls clubs?
I am not naive, but come on, little Kyron should have been safe. His mom walked him to class, what more could she have done?

I stopped him and asked him through the fence what the guy had wanted. “Did he need a ride?” OMG. i should have called the police but didn’t. I regret that.

The boys scout troups supposedly helped with the landscaping projects and clean ups at the school. I read it in one the newsletters on their site.
Well this is looking worse by the day. My cute 10 yo with glasses and I used this case to review a few ‘rules’. One of which is for him to be familiar with the SO in our neighborhood’s picture. He asked a few questions about Kyron, and noted some info on this article- “he was entrusted in the care of the boy scouts! Well thats real smart.” As a child he couldn’t believe it either. I just dont see the benefit in hiding this mans deeds. They would have been heros had they come forward once they became aware. All those poor familes with their stomachs turning inside out when they find out how they have been misled, and now Kyron. Horrible, they all should pay, no matter what their’standing’ in the commnity.

Dee, I never allowed my boys to join either…for the very same reason. I’ve heard to many scary stories like this. I actually have felt bad a couple times thinking maybe I’m over reacting, but stuck with my gut instict and never did let them join.

It is so discouraging because it never changes. They are the wolves and we tax-paying, voting and all around decent folk are the sheep.

FWIW, I live in Oregon not too far from Portland – truthfully, the location of the Skyline school is about as far from Lake Oswego community as you can get and still be in the Portland “area” — Lake Oswego is southeast of Portland and considered a relatively upscale area, Skyline is northwest and in what seems to be a rather remote area. I just cannot see the connection between the 2. Portland is a huge major city.

Hi B – I just checked again on the map, and right by that Lake Oswego exit off HWY 5 (major north-south route Wash to Calif) is the Mormon Church, — it’s a huge elaborate bldg we can always see from the highway — so I would suspect that is the reason for his location there. I noticed he appeared in an online Lake Oswego paper as having registered as a SO in December 2009. Was there a suggestion that he’d moved to another part of Portland since Jan?

Angela, I read that he is no longer affiliated with the church. However, he likely has family members that are…so he may have an indirect association.
First-I am sickened by the thought of this man preying on all those young boys and pray he is not involved with Kyron’s disappearance. It is obvious from his convictions that BSA at that time did not handle the situation very well. My 14 yr old son is a boyscout and we are active with the troop. My fiance is an assistant scoutmaster and had to go thru a background check. All parents that are involved in any type of leadership have to go thru one too. The boys also are taught youth protection which covers molestation or abuse from anyone in their life (coach/teacher, neighbor etc). The adults are not allowed to be with the kids alone on a one/one basis. Must be 2 deep. Boys are taught the buddy system at all times. That protects the kids as well as the adults against accusations.
I am not blaming any of the parents of the kids that were hurt by this man. BSA had a responsibility to protect them and it is obvious they failed. I blame the local troop/council as well. I am only speaking from my own experience these last 4 years my son has been involved. Scouts is still a great organization for boys but I also think parent involvement is key.

Thanks for weighing in, this is my biggest angst. There are THOUSANDS of young boys that NEED this program to have commradery, skills they may not normally be taught, and in some cases, pseudo-paternal involvement. In some cases, the very kids that need this the most, are also and were also sitting ducks in it, which breaks my heart.
If BSA would release those files, just to LE, and maintain the standards they NOW advertise, I would personally endorse them.
For the record, I used to get up at 4:00am once a month on the weekend with my dad, who regularly volunteered his time to make hoagies at their monthly hoagie sale and it was the hilight of my month as a tween. This hits home.

Criminal charges have been filed against an excommunicated general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Washington County prosecutors charged George Patrick Lee, 64, on Monday with a single count of failure to register as a sex offender, a class A misdemeanor. He made a brief appearance in St. George’s 5th District Court and was released from the Purgatory Jail after posting $5,000 bail. He will be arraigned on Aug. 2.
Washington County sheriff’s deputies got a tip that Lee had been convicted of child sex abuse in the past but had not registered as a sex offender, as he is required to do by law.

Oh Dear, how I pray for this little munchkin. He’s a man after my own heart. While attending college, my daughter asked me to mind her two frogs. After redecorating their habitat with mini rain forest like enhancements we became rather fond of one another. I twice weekly trekked to the farthest pet store in order to purchase the freshest, largest live crickets to feed them. They were some happy frogs, Schnaubel and Ente. They really enjoyed climbing up my mirrored wardrobe doors, perhaps thinking they had fellow frog company. After two years my daughter repossessed her frogs and I must say I really missed them. But, that was the beginning of my frog collection, including but not limited to; mouse pads, jewelery, shopping bags, figurines, jewel holders, etc., etc., etc.,…..Everyone buys me frog related items. My most favorite type, Red Tree Frog.
This child has such an endearing look about him, such a sweetheart.

Community help. Inahara got volunteers for the landscaping project from a nearby church, Hands On Greater Portland and two Boy Scout troops.
School custodians. “They’ve been saving garbage for us so we can do waste audits,” Inahara says. The school also has competitions to see which classroom can generate the least trash; custodians help track the trash.
Not only referring to the worry of perhaps someone in the janitorial department, but the Boy Scout troop, AND a NEARBY Church. This appeared to be a group project to re-landscape with eco-friendly products. And of course, the influx of Donated Helpers keeps the costs down………OR does it ????
My hinky meter always goes off with church members aiding children in projects outside of church itself. Kind of Huckaby Hinky ! My first thought was, “Oh no, not an extension of the Baptist Church in Tracy !
I now have an 18 month old granddaughter and I now have to worry about her in addition to my daughter. When and how can we do something, ANYTHING, to make these laws regarding RSO’s work for the safety of our most fragile in society, our children ?

It is terribly frightening how many predators are actually out there. Many appear to be so “normal” how would you know? My heart and prayers go out to everyone involved. Kyron appears to be such a sweet, curious little fella. I would suggest in this day and time we all keep a closer watch over our and our communities children. For safety reasons I would also recommend limiting the headsets and cell phones. I walk in a county park every a.m. Often my dog and I are the only ones in site on the wooded trails. I definitely like to be alert and aware of my surroundings. These people with headsets and cell phones (most of them) have no earthly idea what is going on. Please pay attention – whether you are outside or in a public place.

Two brothers filed a $6.5 million lawsuit Monday against the Mormon church and the Boy Scouts of America for alleged sexual abuse in the 1980s by a Portland church teacher and Scout leader.
The lawsuit, filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court, contends that Timur Van Dykes, 50, of Portland used positions of trust to molest the boys, who were not identified, in the years 1983 to 1985. During those years Dykes served as a leader of Boy Scout Troop 719, which was supervised by the Cherry Park Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Dykes, also known as Vandykes, has been convicted of at least 23 sexual crimes against boys since 1985, when he was indicted by a Multnomah County grand jury and later convicted of sexual abuse and sexual penetration with a foreign object.

Just wanted to pipe in on the residence of Dykes. I believe I read on a earlier post by Blink that his latest address is listed as Burnside (downtown) this makes a little more since. Lake Oswego is considered a pretty high rent district and if he was getting assistance from the Morman church that maybe why he resided in that vicinity. However, Burnside is pretty much were you find homeless shelters, strip clubs, and lots of drug activity. Either one would be a trek to get out to the Skyline school without a vehicle. Portland is a very hilly city with lots of trees and our roadways are not really straight to anywhere. They kind of wind their way through the large hills that the city is built on and the traffic is horrendous. Especially heading out towards where the Skyline School is located. They call that the Sunset Highway which goes from the downtown and all easterly communities to Hillsboro/Beaverton where all the high tech businesses are located, such as Intel (where Kyron’s father works), Nike,ect. a real bottle neck highway that most people try to avoid if at all possible. Or the Interstate 5 to 217 either way your not getting there or away from there fast by any means.

I also had a “talk” with my three grandsons and one grandaughter this weekend. They are all between 5 and 10. I showed them Kyrons pic and told them his story. It was a good “teaching moment”. They asked lots of questions and we “practiced” screaming and getting away. I told them no matter what it takes DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE PUT IN A VEHICLE NOT MATTER WHAT! I told them to fight as if they were dying..that it is okay to hurt them as much as possible! NEVER Quit fighting or screaming! I showed them how to make them selves “big” by spreading arms and legs to be too wide to shove in a car…we acted out scenarios too. I am so proud of them. I do have to admit that I don’t think my grandaughter (youngest) really gets it. She is just so sweet and can’t imagine anyone wanting to hurt her! We will continue to be vigilant!

Why, why, why do we not lock child sexual predators up for life or even better, euthanize them. Court restrictions mean nothing. They live by their own rules, not ours, and the risk we take is the life of a child. Why? Why? Why, do we put the rights of these predators to prey before the rights of our children to be safe?
You will get no argument from me. I think crimes against children are a zero tolerance issue.
Whether or not Dykes is involved in Kyron’s case, no person will ever convince me he is not responsible for other sex crimes or worse against young boys since his incarceration, no way.

My heart is just broken for this sweet little Kyron, and his family.
After watching the press conference with Capt. Schulz,I was so distraught.
It is obvious that none of the family is involved. Capt Schulz seemed to be fighting off his emotions. He kept refering to Kyron as “our boy”.
Yes, he is “our boy” too, and we owe it to Kyron to get these evil people off the streets!! NOW!
The Capt. shared that Kyron had such an infectious laugh that it made others laugh. He loved to dance and rock out with his brother. Kyron’s summer plans are a trip to California, fishing and a houseboat ride.
So very hard to watch.
Now, can you imagine the search being called off, and everyone being sent home? Still no Kyron.
So Devastating! Prayers for this family.
The ONLY solution for these monsters is to LOCK THEM UP FOR GOOD!

I grew up with a brother, so I love frogs! We have old movies of Dad letting us put water in the tub, and adding a bunch of frogs jumpin around! This took place while my Mom was out playing bridge and he was babysitting.:0)
My daughter and I always catch the little green tree frogs stuck to the porch windows. As of today, I will always see tree frogs diffrently, and think of dear sweet Kyron.

I was wondering if anyone can elaborate on what LE is saying publicly.
The news is still indicating that this is a criminal investigation, though will not state it is a kidnapping or abduction. I realize this is legalese stuff, but I wonder why they are not more clear to the public. I am dense I guess, and don’t get what they are trying to not convey. Everyone knows he didnt disappear on his own, so why the dance?
It is my opinion dear Eloise, they could never call it an abduction because they have reason to believe that Kyron went with someone willingly, as in, he was “lured”. Whether that is based on a person’s statements ( this is what I believe) or the family knowing this individual so that option could not be ruled out, I don’t know.
Few thoughts: If this is the work of an RSO, and pedophile, which is my strong belief, depending on when that individual was arrested/paroled, their conditions for same will likely include mandatory polygraphs, among other testing that gets a bit graphic and imo, if you have to use it to test someone with they have no freaking business in society in the first place.
What that means, is that LE has the right to question them under a polly, without declaring them a suspect, and the inability to invoke or refuse a question.
Therefore, I suspect LE got the bulk of their location leads by asking a pattern of questions to maximize their chances for getting good intel. That said, they would still need to start with a “ground zero” for this person, which could be pings, etc.
I suspect the FBI led this part of the investigation, and if they were lied to, could be a way to hold someone until they can build a case.

Thanks for the clarification. However, that is bad news. Burnside is really not a real family type area vs. Lake Oswego which is primarily family and elderly retirees.

The boy scouts have always had a problem with gay men trying and sometimes suceeding in becoming an assistant scout master. This was going on when I was a scout and that was sixty-plus years ago. In that time, they were simply removed from the troop and told to never attend another scout meeting. Thus,no prosecution. The BSA is simply trying to keep everyone in ignorance so they can maintain their reputation. Does this sound familar regarding recent cases at some universities?
If you read one of the Morman books that tells the history of the church, you will find that this group has always practiced pedaphelia from the times they were in New York, and later in Ohio and finally in Missouri. This is one of the reasons that people did not want them in their communities, but not the only reason. There was the issue of multiple wives as well. How about the Morman sect at El Dorado, Texas where girls as young as ten were forced to marry a man of forty or more.

Thank you Blink. I need to do some personal research on this area, re laws, standard of practice. Maybe they want to continue watching their POI, and to not cast suspicion on him directly. It is just so horrible. I hope the parents are being given medication, I sure would need it.
I cannot understand why we can’t get the laws changed. Who disagrees? Not anyone that has true knowledge behind the psyche of these people.

It has been reported by Mom Logic, that the stepmother was on Facebook has been posting nonsense as her status, like “Hitting the gym tomorrow.” And 2 hours after she reported Kyron Horman missing, she was playing Treasure Island on Facebook. Are you kidding me? She also didn’t change her profile picture to Kyron Horman, until 6 days after his disappearance.
This was discussed by LE and myself on here. I think nobody should be judging a person’s character without understanding context, and since her FB is private, how could one?
One thing I need everyone to understand, and I admit if your not from this “space”, nobody would ever know it..

What is critical to Kyron’s recovery, is that this person believes WE believe him.
In that, if he thinks we believe he has harmed Kyron, and you are acting outside of that belief, we believe it will shut down any chances we have to track Kyron’s whereabouts.
What we need you to do, is act as normal as possible, and follow the normal threads of your life in an effort to show an outward appearance that Kyron may have left on his own accord and will undoubtedly be found safely.
They have had a deputy with them 20/7 for 10 days. This is one reason.
