Morgan Harrington Murder: A Security Check On Security- Why Did It Fail?

Moramysara

Charlottesville, VA-

On the afternoon of October 17, 2009, Morgan Harrington and three of her friends drove to John Paul Jones Arena, located on the University of Virginia campus, to attend a long-anticipated Metallica concert. Following an apparent fall and chin injury occurring around the time she was visiting the ladies room, Morgan ended up outside the arena and attempted to gain re-entry to the venue.

How and why she got there comes in at a baffling second only compared to what happened to her next.

Nine months ago Dr. Dan and Gil Harrington, Morgan’s parents were notified their daughter was missing which is when their nightmare began.

On November 5, 2009, the day before a search which was organized at the request of the Harrington’s was to commence, a vintage black Pantera t-shirt placed on a bush in front of an apartment complex at the intersection near 15th Street and Grady Ave.  was located by a nearby resident.

While this discovery was not released publicly, Charlottesville PD knew immediately it belonged to Morgan Harrington. Sara Snead, one of the friends that accompanied Morgan to the concert, immediately confirmed the distinct vintage design that compelled Morgan to borrow the t-shirt from her a week before the show.

Subsequently, DNA analysis confirmed the t-shirt was indeed the same one Morgan was wearing the night she disappeared.

On January 26, 2010 the remains of Morgan Harrington were discovered by David Bass, owner of Anchorage Farm, located in Albemarle County. Although her cause of death has not been released, her manner of death has been classified as a homicide by the Virginia State Police.

Dan and Gil Harrington marked the nine-month anniversary of Morgan’s disappearance from her memorial on Copeley Bridge 4 days ago.

Gil Harrington’s impassioned statement made it clear that her family’s mission is to prevent what happened to Morgan from happening to another victim and their goal is to educate young women about safety and personal security.

On July 1st, based upon an article posted on blinkoncrime.com inside sources confirmed a forensic link between Morgan’s homicide and a Fairfax County Case. Research on this case indicates it was a violent sexual assault that happened in 2005. The victim assisted in the sketch of a man police wish to interview in connection with both the Fairfax assault as well as the apparent abduction and murder of Morgan Harrington. .

What did it mean to the investigation and to the parents of young women in Charlottesville? We have a serial offender on the loose in multiple jurisdictions and an immediate need to beef up personal security.

As our very vulnerable student body returns to campus next month, blinkoncrime.com provides a glimpse at current conditions.

Unregulated Regulations In Security

The 2004 General Assembly, through House Joint Resolution (HJR122), requested the Virginia State Crime Commission to study safety at Virginia’s institutions of higher education. As a result, DCJS created the Office of Campus Policing and Security (OCPS) to address the law requiring minimum training and employment standards for campus security officers.

Campus Security Regulations for Institutions of Higher Education in the State of Virginia, fall under the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Private Security Services Advisory Board. Below is an excerpt of the unapproved draft meeting notes of their quarterly meeting held December 8, 2009; the first and only since Morgan’s disappearance from JPJ.

The issue of safety and security on college campuses was addressed in a 2006 Crime Commission Study on Campus Safety. This study resulted in the statutory requirements under Code of Virginia (Code) §9.1-102 (49).

College populations represent a large concentration of students between the ages of 18-25 years with limited supervision and life experience. In terms of homeland security, campuses are identified as “soft targets” and are frequently targeted by domestic and foreign terrorists. Campuses also house volatile materials and research facilities that are also targeted by radical elements in society. Campuses host large stadium events and concerts that are potential targets for terrorism and riots. Most campuses also have facilities that are open to the public and are relatively difficult to secure and lockdown.   Campus Security Officers are primary first responders to incidents of crime and violence on campus.

Although UVA campus security officers require a certification provided by DCJS, there are ZERO regulatory standards for certification. It was NOT until Morgan Harrington disappeared from the grounds of the JPJ Arena that emergency regulations were sought from Governor Bob McDonnell.

How does a woman on the campus of a University that provides it’s very own Police Department in addition to event security simply vanish without a trace?

By the time Morgan ends up in a hay field 7 miles away, she has passed through 3 different law enforcement jurisdictions and a slew of private campus and event security agencies and personnel.  While private security regulations fall under the umbrella of the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, they also require a judicial amendment only if and when they are approved via “emergency” status by the Governor.

Who’s Looking Out For The Kids, Exactly?

As the safety on campus study showed, our college age kids are at their most vulnerable in the University setting.  Out from under the watchful eye of Mom and Dad and wading through the rich culture and nightlife of downtown Charlottesville, students face a host of potential safety risks.

In fact, during the very development of this article, I received an alert from UVA security that a UVA student was sexually assaulted in the area of Roosevelt Boulevard. While I commend the swift response and warning from UVA PD chief Michael Gibson, I can’t help but wonder if a similar alert upon learning Morgan disappeared from the UVA/JPJ campus would have made a difference for her.

A simple Google of “Charlottesville security” produces the front page for HH Security Services, Inc, a local private security and bail bonding firm.  I am no expert but isn’t it a bit odd to claim to protect one’s security and then bond out someone that may threaten it in the first place?

Who is vetting the security that is responsible for ensuring safety?

While HH Security or it’s employees have no known ties whatsoever to the Harrington case, it is a prime example of the weakness of current security regulations, involving students and private events, 6 years in the making.

RoderickHoward1At H & H Security Services, Inc. we specialize in Private Investigation, Private Security both armed and unarmed as well as fast efficient Civil Process Service.  Our full-time professional agents are well trained, well equipped, well informed, and discreet.? Owner Rod Howard is a native of Charlottesville and central Virginia, where he’s been a well respected business owner for over twenty years. H & H Security Services, Inc. is his vehicle in his effort to help serve and protect the community he grew up in. Over the years he’s assembled a team of certified and experienced personnel who share his commitment to the safety of the community.

HH Bail

HH Security, in a business journal ad, claims to hire members of law enforcement and be very well connected with various police departments and security agencies for nightclubs, special events and home security checks as well in 2007.

HH Security is the security firm of choice for Club 216, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Rivals, which are bars frequently visited by UVA students and athletes.

Roderick M Howard, owner of HH Security and H&H Car detailing maintains active licenses issued through the VA Dept of Criminal Justice Services for private security and as a bailbondsman.

While blinkoncrime editors were researching this piece, a review of Albemarle County Court records show Roderick Howard was arrested for felony rape in 1993, subsequently indicted for same and a year later on the first day of trial, pled guilty to misdemeanor sexual battery whereby he was sentenced to 12 months, 11 of which were suspended and two years unsupervised probation.

Howard was also arrested a few times for felony bad checks; both cases ended nolle prosequi.

How can an accused rapist and convicted sexual batterer hold a dual license in the private security sector as well as two classifications of firearms, all of which is monitored by the VADCJS? It is specifically stated in the regulations regarding moral turpitude AND sexual battery that the VADCJS MAY DENY an applicant on those grounds.

According to Mr. Howard’s own advertisement, he has been in the security industry since 1989. Would that mean he was employed in the security field when he was arrested for rape?

Shockingly, It may be perfectly legal. Although the administrative statute for licensure prohibits granting a license to someone with a misdemeanor sexual battery conviction, if Howard divulged the crime in his application and requested a waiver from the director at the time, it is possible one was granted.

Blinkoncrime.com spoke to Lisa McGee, Regulatory Program Manager for DCJS, private security advisory committee:

“…there is a code in the statute that allows the potential for both an individual convicted of a felony and the outlined misdemeanors exceptions contained therein to obtain a director’s waiver. Two felonies we would never even consider are rape and murder, but dependent upon the criminal offense, the circumstances and the length of time that has transpired with a clean record, the verbiage in the statute would allow an applicant to at least request a waiver for our consideration…”  Lisa McGee

Ms. McGee was not able to address Mr. Howard’s file specifically, citing privacy laws, but she was able to verify that Mr. Howard’s registration with the agency is current.

There are however, some discrepancies in the press release written to announce the “restructuring” of both companies, announced October 19th.

HH pressr

For starters, there was only a name change to Mr. Howard’s business, which actually took place prior to the October 19 release date, in May, 2009.

These are not two separate businesses. In fact, the bailbondsman license issued to Mr. Howard’s agent, Anthony Halstead, leads back to Accelerated Bail Bonds, which is not a listed entity in the state of Virginia or listed as a fictitious name for H&H Security Services.

I would be willing to wager that the police departments that allow off duty security employment with this firm would appreciate some clarification on both the personnel and licensing issues.

There has been no arrest in the homicide of Morgan Harrington. In a statement released by Corrine Geller, PR manager for the Virginia State Police, VSP has received approximately 100 significant leads from the release of the sketch of the alleged perpetrator of the 2005 Fairfax County sex assault.

Dan and Gil Harrington will be meeting with new University of Virginia President, Teresa Sullivan, next month to address safety and security issues on campus.

“..People think it cannot happen to them, IT CAN– Dan Harrington.”

Editors Note: I am not a resident of Virginia. However, I think the interest of the safety of our children is a National one. Any person that is placed in a position of public trust, most especially those that come into contact with our vulnerable students, should be REQUIRED to disclose past convictions that would negate them that position without some sort of subjective “pass”.  How can we know-TRULY KNOW the level of presumed safety if we really aren’t aware of the backgrounds of those in charge of it?

I watched the video of the Spinosa interview of Officer Byers of the NG ACPD satellite office. I’m thinking that his intentions were well meant with regard to jurisdiction. However, as a public safety official, it really is in his, the department’s, and certainly the residents- his constituents- to be vigilantly seeking answers and aiding, while not stepping on toes, VSP and their efforts to solve this murder and get a time bomb off of the street. Based on what has been implied as to Morgan’s condition when she was found, this guy is going to strike again. We know that the person involved in the Fairfax case has at least aided in Morgan’s crime, assuming that DNA has integrity (not planted, that is).

SGT Byers, with all due respect, put ‘em up(!): Crossroads Store, that antique store on 29S, the gas stations all along that stretch, Covesville Antiques, the post office, the apple orchard, the quarry, Monticello high school, all schools, public and private, the vineyards, the paving company, churches, county parks (Biscuit run), go door to door- it’s YOUR community to protect.

It seems that they (LE) didn’t really want that SKETCH out there to begin with. The apparently have their reasons for not spreading it around. Perhaps, the sketch could be used in a defense move to suggest that the client who ends up on trial is not the person, as in to create reasonable doubt for their client, because LE had a sketch of a totally different suspect. Perhaps they (LE)have every logical reason to not release or spread the sketch around in the general public. Perhaps they know that this sketch could lead people to look at the wrong guy/guys.

I was at work that day at Chesterfield DSS and the girl across the hall from me kept a tiny TV in her “deep drawer”. I came out of my office to go copy some documents and Regina opened her door and motioned me to come in – she was watching when the first reports and she told me a plane had hit the WTC. It was thought it was an accident, but we learned it was an attack. We had tv’s in our client waiting rooms – we shared a building with the health dept. Our waiting rooms were often crowded but all our clients were silent just watching in shock. Then the second plane hit. Somewhere in there came the Pentagon and Shanksville. My daddy used to work at the Pentagon but he was retired, and watching it on tv safe at home. Even the phone calls stopped. Just crowds of people in offices listening to the radio or in the waiting rooms. It was one of those moments where you always remember where you were….22 Nov 1963…7 Dec 1941….and 9/11….Sadly so many of the first responders, police and fire and rescue are ill from breathing all the dust and stuff in the toxic air. Laura Bush and Michelle are attending in the field at Shanksville where Flight 93 went down. Very beautiful place. “Let’s Roll !!!!” What heroes…..

Has UVA followed up on H&H since they have used their services in the past? Just wondering…I understand if you cannot answer. Sorry if these questions are too direct..I am really antsy pantsy today!

Dear Mr. And Mrs. Harrington, I also continue to fall into pits of grief, but something about Morgan’s smile, which I will never forget, and the obvious energy of who she was as she looked up from her desk in our Creative Process course in McBryde 216, sends me back into action. I remember something that Morgan really loved in class one day. We were talking about love and loss as the tributaries of the creative impulse, and I told my students about Roland Joffe’s film, City of Joy, based on a true story about a doctor’s experiences in the slums of Calcutta, India. The old proverb at the end of that film made Morgan thank me after class, and tell me that her Mom would love it: Everything not given is lost.

I have kept for you a precious essay and drawing that Morgan made for one of my assignments, her Tibetan-style shrine, a way of her organizing what she valued and how she came to hold her values. I have read every word you have posted, Mrs. Harrington, and I see why it is no wonder that my student Morgan was such a dazzling writer. When the time is right, I have her work for you.

For ten years I have been part of the making of a documentary film called A Gift for the Village. Morgan saw the rough draft of this film, and she is in the film, sitting and smiling with her classmates on my living room floor, and it is dedicated to her. The film is sanctioned by The Dalai Lama, and it will premiere in this country in Roanoke’s Taubman Museum on September 23, this Fall.

I never forget about Morgan. Respectfully, Jane Lillian Vance, Morgan’s professor at Virginia Tech

I have been so busy this past week, I have not been able to keep up on all the posts like I normally do. I have unfortunately just been scanning through the posts.

But, even in just scanning, I’ve noticed a definite change in the case, dare I say a glimmer of hope that there is progress being made?

Gil’s post on 9/10 hits straight to the heart, doesn’t it? The frustration, anger, hurt, pain. It just makes my heart hurt. I think of Morgan and her family every single day, every day, just like all of you. Every time I come to BOC, I am hoping to see that headline that the SOB’s have been caught. One day, it will be there. I hope it’s sooner rather than later.

But, there’s only one thing I wanted to comment on today and that is Gil’s post from 9/10. I believe Gil chooses her words wisely, carefully. She specifically said “I realize that the legitimate target of the consuming raging inferno of our anger about Morgan’s death is the person(s) that abducted her, raped her, butchered her, and abandoned her as refuse in a hay field.

Per the http://www.thefreedictionary.com “Abduct: to remove (a person) by force or cunning; kidnap”. Gil does not believe Morgan willing went anywhere with anyone….unless she was tricked into going.

She also goes on to specifically say that she was (I hate saying it, typing it, thinking it, ugh) raped and butchered. Combined with what we’ve previously heard about the shattered bones, which I believe were said to be pre-death….

    Again, I ask….Why so brutal?

I would believe this person is very, very, very dangerous, an extremely high threat to the community. I in no way believe that something this extreme could have been a one timer, something that “just happened”, an accident, or anything of the sort.

    They tortured her.

That is beyond concerning to me.

  16. Eloise says:

    Judi
I noticed Gil’s wording as well. The longer this goes on, the more angry its makes me, (and everyone else). She did not choose her words carelessly. It does make one have to contemplate what horror must have actually taken place. I think these are monsters and for at least one, this brutal act was just a notch on his bedpost. I have to wonder if there is not at least some personal element to this. I don’t know. I think there have been other acts, but I think this has been the worst.
There is a sense of relief for me that Lt. Rader responded so promptly to Alexandra’s email. He could have easily ignored it, or sent a form response, and it didnt sound that way. So, maybe he is more encouraged, hopeful that this bs will end soon.

Not that there isn’t enough on our plates, but I am curious if anybody thinks Vanessa P is still linked to this? Her cause of death was stabbing, correct? I am wondering how literal Gil was being.

Hello as a regular lurker and infrequent poster. Moving into fall always feels like a true beginning of the year for me and with this I have hopes, from what I’ve read here lately, and from Gil and Dan’s meeting with LE, that progress, interest and dedication to this case is occurring. I know everyone’s heart is in the right place which is reassuring.

I am wondering if a COD has ever been released? If not, why? As Judi says above, this crime increasingly sounds so devastatingly brutal, inhuman. If this is the case, and if the Harringtons’ know this as fact, shouldn’t all of us have this knowledge? That a severely deranged, beyond dangerous person/persons are on the loose—forgive me here please— “butchering” a young woman before murdering her? Shouldn’t there be a warning much more severe than what we have been given so far? Shouldn’t this ‘fact’ be shouted from the f***** rooftops? If Morgan was a random victim shouldn’t we all be terrified? Does this mean that perhaps LE thinks Morgan knew her killer and it wasn’t so random? Wasn’t precious Cassandra found without her head? Forgive me again for writing such painful brutal words. There’s no way around it. We know there is a maniac loose, but could he be also a SERIAL butchering soulless maniac on the loose? Why aren’t we being told more details? I could scream I’m so frustrated. The public needs to know how these women died imho. This is not poor dear Yeardley and her story here (relationship violence).

Blink? Do you believe Gil is giving us this message: of the killer(s) insanity and sadistic nature? Are there really ways to determine if these vicious things were done to precious Morgan prior to her death? It literally boggles, stops my mind on many levels. The trauma of those words shock and numb me. But we cannot become numb.

Everyday mind numbing violence is on our TV’s, in the movies, in our papers, etc… Some families gather round the TV nightly to watch violent shows as a way to bond and be together. All of this perpetuates the numbing qualities of real life violence. It has the ability to acclimate us to violence-particularly against women and children, the elderly, and of course is often sexually violent as well. Gil spoke to us about the victims of this violence being the “canarys in the coal mine”. But if we are witnessing this type of violence daily in our lives—for ENTERTAINMENT, then how will we ever wake up to what is done to our girls, our children, the marginalized, ever?!!!! It sounds as if–and this breaks my heart– what happened to Morgan, that it was a plot from one of these awful Freddy Kruger or whatever his name is and whatever those movies are about–the ones that butcher women–terrified, helpless young women, running for their lives. The sort of movie(s) that people PAY to go see and enjoy! Have we as a collective society lost our minds? I know we’ve lost our way.

Sorry for my interruption and this diatribe, but please indulge me. Gil’s blogs and her eloquence has had me pondering my part, my role, in this story. Has me asking questions and thinking on the hows to make this world safer, better. Plus the length of time this case is taking, and the daily accumulating victim list of mostly women and children grows along with the pages of dead women’s names whose cases have not been solved. I fear what Gil said recently is true: that many read the stories of dead girls and mutter: “Oh what a shame”….close the paper, click on the next story, surf channels, and get on with their day. How do we wake up folks? Do we continue bringing babies into this world knowing that 1 in 5 girls will be sexually assaulted by the age of 18? And of course this is what is only reported!!! That sexual violence/murder is just a “realistic” byproduct of society that we can’t get a grip on? It seems our court systems can’t even keep pedophiles in prison for life! This is about Morgan of course, and it’s also about the quality of life in our world too. For EVERYONE! This is about the collective attitudes and maybe risks of living in the free world with rampant, unbridled trash that sells and distorts with infinite internet porn, sensational media stories, sexual and sadistic violence in movies, mindless TV shows, anonymous, casual sex, those “girls gone wild” shows that parade as some sort of “normal” spring break fun, continual hedonism etc… I know I must sound like an old frigid uptight woman and I’m not. Well, maybe I’m becoming one, unbeknownst to me on a conscious level, and if that’s the case-great, so be it. I have watched in the past, and enjoyed, some movies and tv shows that contain violence, and I’m not sure until the last few years, that I’ve known the price my heart and soul have paid for this sort of indulgence. Thinking my intellect could and would over ride any dangers. But a human being is not a compartmentalized ‘thing’; we are fully integrated systems and meant to operate in this way to make good and healthy decisions. In compartmentalizing parts of myself I think I have split my head and heart, and somehow, somewhere along the way, I fell asleep to how even exposing myself to ‘mild’ violence and indifferent sex has numbed me, has allowed me to think that murder/rape statistics are just another terrible reality to be accepted and tolerated to a degree. So somehow, I thought I was ‘protected’ by being an adult, could handle mature subjects. The reality is because I’m mature? :) I should have been informing my mind to NOT place myself in the midst of trash that never fed me on any level anyway.

So thanks to you that read this and hear me. I don’t know why I’m writing this now. Maybe I’m scared. I’ve heard Gil say more than once her girl was raped, had her bones broken and now read the gruesome word: butchered. I also once read her say that her daughter was not someone to be used and discarded as if she was a semen stained rag left in a field. That literally turns my stomach. As if we, as women, and our children are someone’s plaything, a sexual toy, to be casually tossed away, obliterated, when used. I feel like I’m going insane thinking about this concept of women as sexual objects. And yet in reality it is those who would use women in this way that are the insane ones.

My husband is a psychiatrist, works within the court system at times, etc… and says there is zero chance of this sort of violence going away anytime soon. Does this mean his head/intellect is cut off from his heart? That he is on some level accepting this reality? Because this stuff is supposed to be a reality?!!!! I’m so sorry folks, I don’t feel very well today and just so badly need to get this out. Gil’s pain and frustration expressed so well in her words pull on me. If anyone has any words of wisdom please share them. I am yearning for LIGHT. And I apologize for the length of this sad rant.

This sounds like a response for Fish to tackle.
    Pun intended.

I have been wondering how he can live a normal life and function, now, that he has murdered her. Maybe he just doesn’t care, he didn’t get caught, and he forgot about it immediately – very similar to how I would perceive illegal parking or similar minor offenses. This is the only explanation I can think of.

The question why there was no formal warning, and why the sketch hasn’t been displayed is most interesting. To me it appears that they either know who he is, or, that there is some sort of argument going on within LE, the right hand following a different strategy than the left hand. Alternatively, they could be dealing with a rapidly changing and developing situation, which would explain some of the inconsistencies.

    “Again, I ask….Why so brutal?

I would believe this person is very, very, very dangerous, an extremely high threat to the community. I in no way believe that something this extreme could have been a one timer, something that “just happened”, an accident, or anything of the sort.”

Indeed. I strongly believe he has a history, and that he is going to strike again, if he doesn’t get arrested.

Moreover, I still believe they must have found something in that field that compelled them to stop talking to the public. Rader’s words at the press conference were very carefully chosen, and well arranged, but they didn’t mention the nature of the crime, they only discussed the location, in a very obscure way, and the murderer’s connection to the location.

They were giving out quite a lot of information to the public, even after they found her, about their work, how they would proceed etc. and then suddenly silence. What did they find? We now know about the shirt – that came out by coincidence, through the press. We know about the DNA match, which was reported by Blink. What else is there? I get the feeling we only see the tip of the iceberg.

I believe that once Morgan was found, outside of the fact that Rader openly admitted nothing in their investigation “led them to search there”, VSP transitioned their strategy to protect a prosecution.

To be frank, I think they also put some LE internal ( all agencies) stop gaps in place, because a leak was identified, and that leak was actually leaking bad intel, lol.

One of the things that is particularly interesting to me, is that many folks in the per view of this investigation were chattering away about their affairs, and once she was found, attempted to “delete” 3 months of posts/history. The reason is that is curious is because there names were not “out there” yet, and that is exactly the type of knee-jerk, post offense behavior we expect to see in a case like this.

I have made some of the greatest contacts, friendships, aquaintances to locals in this case, so please understand I am not speaking to you when I say to those that are literally just waiting for the knock on the door, because THEY ARE just waiting for the knock on the door, or the call from the boss to come to the office where LE will be waiting.

And while I am at it- if your boss suspects or knows, he is a damn fool because when this hits, he will also lose everything. How could anyone possibly think this is going to go away? You think because you know that Harry Whatshisface and Mrs. Whosherface were schtupping at some point that is going to be your ticket?

For someone who professes to be educated in these matters: I am laughing at what an utter phony you are just like the last girl that dumped you.

Imo, these dudes are acting like this is some sort of imaginary Indian reservation and VSP has no jurisdiction and the “elders” are going to take care of this “like their elders did”.

Grow the Eff Up. Your family is going to see your mug across every tv and computer screen and know what your capable of. Not so manly then, are ya?

Meadow … your sentiments could not be any more on point. I totally agree. So, what to do, what to do? Has any society, civizilation, or community so consumed with debauchery ever been able to turn itself around and find it’s humanity again? But, read Blink immediately above – that will do for me now. Still, people like Blink, yourself, and all these others on this blog give me HOPE. Perhaps this is the start of the awareness of “how TOO far we’ve gone”. A heart like yours is that hope.

  23. crimewriter says:

How common is it for the County Commonwealth’s Attorney to arrive at the scene of a crime, -high profile or not? Was a search warrant secured to search AF once they vetted the remains were human and indeed Morgan? I sensed too many Chiefs and not enough Indians which sometimes inadvertently get in one another’s ways. A lot of micromanaging of other’s doings, or at least attempting to do the functions of other’s specific roles which is different than supporting to make sure the i’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed. I’m certainly not saying everyone there had the right intentions of supporting one another . Blink, your comments have my wheels turning back to when all the discipline and suspensions were taking place shortly after the discovery of Morgan’s remains. I think were in a position to set back and wait for the constitutional officer’s offices to do what they do best and preserve this case for successful prosecution without the defendant(s) lawyers being able to suppress evidence admissible or not.

Honestly, I took that as a clue that Morgan’s case was intertwined with Colby’s. I believe her report on that came out a few days later. So we may agree, not that it nets anything today.

  24. Mom3.0 says:

Although I share others concerns regarding violence and rape, and I agree that something must be done to safeguard our loved ones from violence and rape, especially women and children who seem to be the chosen victims all too often. I disagree that violence in music, books or other forms, such as television shows lead to violent acts, especially those of brutal rape and murder.

Do I believe that these perverts twist these forms of media to their sickness? Yes. But I believe they twist everything into something sick and demented.

Violence and rapes were committed against women and children, long before the creation of music or the written word, long before books, or even porno mags, before action or horror movies, before tv or even before xxx films.

Who decides what will be censored? Who decides what must be done away with, all in the hopes that their absence will end violence and rape in our communities? Is it every book that depicts any form of violence? Is it any book that deals with rape?

Then we would most assuredly have to get rid of some of the classics such as “To Kill A Mocking Bird”, as it is violent and deals with accusations of rape, brutality, racism, murder ect. Perhaps we should start with a more recent book such as “The Kite Runner”, which along with violence and racism, contains a depiction of a boy’s rape.

We would probably have to do away with the Holy Bible as it contains violence and has some controversial passages on rape:

    Deuteronomy 20:10-14

As you approach a town to attack it, first offer its people terms for peace. If they accept your terms and open the gates to you, then all the people inside will serve you in forced labor. But if they refuse to make peace and prepare to fight, you must attack the town. When the LORD your God hands it over to you, kill every man in the town. But you may keep for yourselves all the women, children, livestock, and other plunder. You may enjoy the spoils of your enemies that the LORD your God has given you.

    Deuteronomy 22:28-29

If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered he shall pay the girl’s father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

    Deuteronomy 22:23-24
If within the city a man comes upon a maiden who is betrothed, and has relations with her, you
shall bring them both out of the gate of the city and there stone them to death: the girl because
she did not cry out for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his
    neighbors wife.

Okay maybe not books, so let’s look at movies. Should we do away with all movies that are violent? Such as Orsen Well’s “Animal Farm” or H. G. Wells’ “The Time Machine”? How about Alfred Hitchcock’s movies? Especially, “Psycho” as it deals with graphic murder, lust, psychosis ect. Or how about just those that deal with rape, especially those with graphic depictions? Movies such as “The General’s Daughter” which is about a murder and cover-ups, a sexual assault, secret sex videotapes, and a gang rape at West Point.

Or maybe we should do away with those that deal with pedophiles and killing women and children? Well then, we must do away with movies such as “A Time To Kill” and “The Lovely Bones”

What about music?- Which songs should be stricken from our collective conscious? Those with cuss words, those with violence?

Then we have to do away with songs like Johnny Cash’s, “A Boy Named Sue”

“Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down, but to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a’ gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer.

I tell ya, I’ve fought tougher men
But I really can’t remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile.
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin’ at me and I saw him smile.

And he said: “Son, this world is rough
And if a man’s gonna make it, he’s gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn’t be there to help ya along.
So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
I knew you’d have to get tough or die
And it’s the name that helped to make you strong.”

He said: “Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn’t blame you if you do.
But ya ought to thank me, before I die,
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
Cause I’m the son-of-a-bitch that named you Sue.”

Just songs that deal with rape? Well we’d have to get rid of Nirvana’s “Polly” and “Rape Me”, even though those were written as anti-rape songs.

Then we would have to do away with Dean Martin’s Christmas time staple, “Baby Its Cold Outside”, as it contains lyrics that could be construed as, advocating date rape, or at least supplying the girl with too much booze or?, in an effort to make her unable to leave….:

Her: but maybe just a half a drink more
Him: (put some records on while I pour)
    Her: the neighbors might faint
Him: (baby it’s bad out there)
Her: say what’s in this drink
Him: (no cabs to be had out there)

Next we’d have to get rid of The Rolling Stones “Brown Sugar” It seems to be a jolly song about a slave owner having his way with slaves…:

“Old coast slave ship bound for cotton fields
Sold in a market down in New Orleans
Scarred old slaver knows he’s doing alright
Hear him with the women just around midnight

Brown sugar how come you taste so good?
Brown sugar just like a young girl should”

No?? Well then maybe George Micheal’s “Father Figure” will make the List of songs that should be banned- as it seems to promote pedos:

“I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine
I will be your preacher teacher
    (Be your daddy)
    Anything you have in mind
I will be your father figure
I have had enough of crime
I will be the one who loves you -
    Until the end of time
    That’s all I wanted
But sometimes love can be mistaken
    For a crime”

The Sick miscreants that get off on raping and murdering do so because they are deviants. Not because they listened to The Rolling Stones watched CSI or looked at Playboy.

Blink on Crime is a site that deals with True Crime. Blink writes about the horrors that befall victims, sometimes graphically. She does so in an effort to give the victims a voice. She does so in an effort to help the family’s get justice.

Sometimes our discussions include questions and thoughts on specific crimes of pedophilia, domestic violence, rape, murder, decomposition,
manner of death ect. Rape is ugly, murder is ugly. Blink herself, has said many times that the perpetrators of these crimes often get off on reading about their crimes or others crimes. Should we ban BOC because it is too graphic? Should we do away with BOC because there may be some sick miscreant out there getting off on what is written here?

Which forms of media are the ones we can be sure are good? Which books, music, movies or websites have fed into a rapist/killer/pedos sickness? Which books, music, movies or websites have lead to violence, rape and murder?

I want justice for the victims. I want to safeguard our families. I want to do away with rape and murder and violence. I just don’t think doing away with books, tv shows, movies, ect is the answer.

Yowza. You have my wheels grinding in the dark-early, Mom 3.0-

    In a Good Way.

I think balance is key, but I do agree that in and of themselves, violent lyrics verbiage or imagery are highly subjective to the provacativeness of the individual.

While I want parents/teachers/caregivers to pay attention to what negative messages do to stimulate a child or teen because it is responsible, it is almost too late by that time if they fall into that category.

I am an avid music lover, as are my children. They will tell you that my ipod contains about 50 different play lists with some of the most ecclectic and diverse mixes out there. I have “defying gravity” from wicked and Nirvana back to back on one, lol.

Thanks for the sound point of view as usual.

  25. Dan Harrington says:

    Gil Harrington’s Blog for September 13, 2010

Our struggle with processing Morgan’s death is complicated by a duality of purpose. A murder creates this dichotomy. On one hand, we must submit and learn to accept the fact that Morgan is no more; her life is over. We must relinquish our hopes and dreams – surrender. At the same very time we must fight, stir ourselves to sound the alarm and amp up attention, concern and action because a killer is still on the loose and will most likely harm or kill again.

It is grueling and exhausting to struggle through the sludge and weight of our sadness and then try to overcome the established status quo that tries to sooth and minimize the vicious act that took Morgan’s life and poses continued danger.

There is an entrenched culture of violence and victimization against women and children in this country. It has been ignored and allowed for some time. The very language used to describe assault and abduction seeks to minimize the inherent savagery of the acts committed. In my verbiage, Morgan was not “missing” – she was snatched. Things did not get “out of hand” – Morgan was assaulted and raped. Morgan did not “pass away” – she was murdered and slaughtered.

Soothing tones and soft language are appropriate when the evil monster is make-believe in a child’s bedtime story; not when he walks in your town.

I am reminded here on the cusp of the 9/11 anniversary, that the buildings’ occupants were soothed and directed back to their offices, back to business as usual., back to their deaths.

Be alert! You cannot queue up like placid sheep when evil is loose in the land.

Some questions I am thinking about as I read through the very good and insightful posts in the last several days:

    1. I have been thinking about the dna data base in VA, and I realized that I did not know the rule, when is a person required to be registered in the data base, and from what date this data base existed. Evidently some of the localities were/(are?) also in the same state of confusion as I am, because I found the following article from 2006:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/20/AR2006122001797.html

So if a person was arrested for a sex offender felony about 20 years ago, how would we know if said persons dna was in the data base already or not?

The Timothy Spencer conviction was the first in Va using dna to id the criminal. That was in the late 80′s, however, that was the very beginning of dna forensics in VA, and it seems obvious that the starting point for the dna database had to be some time after that, as the laws needed to be passed by the General Assembly.

So, if a person was arrested for a felony sex crime in the 90′s it seems that they would be in the registry, however, then I find the above article saying that a percentage are not because of whatever reason.

    Other questions/thoughts to follow.

  27. susan says:

    2. It seems that sometimes I do not fully grasp the significance of Blink’s well researched articles when I first read them, and then months later, looking at things from a different angle, something startling pops out……

The date of the announcement of the restructuring of a security company being Monday after Morgan;s abduction. One company becoming two? In order to add new services? I originally thought something like this might be for regulatory reasons. Could there have been a rift among the participants? Or ……any number of possible reasons, but the timing is odd. “New services??”

Well since SH was not even licensed yet, it would certainly appear, shall we say, sudden.
And for the record, it is still exactly the same company trading under 2 names, but one entity.

@Meadow: I have no doubt that Blink’s website is changing society for the better, particularly as I talk to public officials about this case, they have read the concern of the people here. As I mentioned, Leon, at VA DCJS indicated he knew about the issue of the certification. (he was not there when it happened).

I have also called the cabinet member the Director of Public Safety, who has oversight for the VSP and her Deputy Secretary called me back the next day and said to call him anytime. I am impressed that Blink’s website is the nexus for Virginians to express our concerns in a polite, and respectful way, and I do think that the Cabinet of the governor is concerned with public safety and obviously the State Police and their Cabinet Secretary are listening and very receptive to the fear that we are all feeling and living in about this crime, not to mention the anguish that the Harrington’s have endured to this point.

I am glad that Lt Rader has gotten extra personnel on this case, and may Godspeed be with him to solve it.

    Re post 22 sept 13th 4:51 AM Mom3.0

Way to go Mom3.0 my fearless music loving friend!!
Fabulous post and very inspired look at censorship in general and where to begin.
The burning of books thing has been very much on my mind lately, and has an ominous Orwellian ring.
God help women and children, fifty shekels of silver huh!! This kind of inhumane behavior has been going on since the dawn of time and makes my blood boil!!
Women and children as chattels has always bothered the hell out of me.
Give me a gun, give me a sword I will stand and fight those marauders myself instead waiting somewhere in the village to be raped, abducted and killed at the battles end.
Women sure do need to be taught how to defend themselves, and children vigilantly protected, and taught the buddy system. Seems like we have indeed reverted back to biblical days, or the middle ages, where it was not safe for a maiden to ever venture out alone, at night time OR in the daylight.
It has been said that the laws around rape and child abuse and abductions, are not effective enough or taken seriously, because children who cannot defend themselves also cannot vote and thus are not an important political group or “voice.”
A District Attorney friend of mine, quite experienced and established in the field of violent crime, told me that being a Judge in childrens’ court is looked down on. That employees who are being professionally reprimanded, often are sent to that division as a sort of punishment and demotion.
Apparently a Judge presiding over childrens’ court is not very respected and much less likely to rise with in the ranks of power.
How sad, upside down, and abhorrent is that? God help our children and our grandchildren.
God help the Harringtons’ bear their pain and loss and grief and stay in touch with their WRATH!!
May that wrath help fuel their relentless drive to find and bring to justice ,the miscreant that abducted, raped, tortured and murdered their beautiful and innocent, only daughter Morgan Dana Harrington.
Morgan is a fighter. She will not go quietly you fools!! She will haunt you until your dying day in prison or
on death row. Your days are numbered.

  38. first-time says:

Hello all. Blink, are you speaking to someone specific in your “freakshow” rant? Someone who knows of someone’s schuppting and who was recently dumped? My head is spinning. Can someone clue me in?!? The Harringtons and all LE working on this…my prayers are with you! 2 4 1

Yes, I was. They know who they are.

  39. susan says:

@ Eloise: I think hiney coverage is a good possibility, but sort of stupid on the part of the doers, to think that a press release would shield from responsibility/liability, if that is the bottom line.

Strange press release at that. It did not even make sense. New services? That is real strange, and actually invites my imagination.

Some people will do odd things to make a buck, and I am just saying that sort of as a proverb, with no one particular in mind..,..

  40. crimewriter says:

A couple of things of interest…I noticed recently an added box on the main website for the UVA JPJ arena website… “Guest Concerns
John Paul Jones Arena is committed to providing proactive immediate response to issues affecting guests. Should a concern arise during an event, please visit the Guest Services Booth sponsored by ACAC at Section 310, on the main concourse, to have your concern addressed or make a nearby staff member aware of the concern”
The other, H & H also specializes in private investigation. Who specifically holds the licenses in that realm?

Roderick Howard is the only licensed individual for private security for his firm, all other agents are subject to his license and the rules and regs for private security as established by the VA DOJ.
    B

  41. Mom3.0 says:

Blink Thank you for your sound point of view too. I agree balance and responsibility are badly needed.

We need to watch over our children’s likes and dislikes. I agree with Alexandra, and TGF that we need to watch over one another.

I understand others questions and concerns regarding accounts of violence & fictional violence somehow desensitizing people to the horrors of killing, war, rape ect.

I agree an obsession with anything is not good. If a person is playing and replaying violent music, we should take notice. Just as we should take notice of someone playing and replaying “A General’s Daughter” or even “The Passion Of The Christ”

I am not FOR violence in media or anywhere else. But I am against censorship. Are Gil’s words too graphic and true to be heard? Should we ask her to censor herself? Should she tone down her language, as to be sure it is not too gut-wrenchingly strong and uncomfortable for the masses to hear?? If we continue to listen to more of Gil’s words, will they lose their meaning? Will we become desensitized to her grief and anguish? Will Morgan’s abduction, rape and murder become less horrifying? Will we no longer care? I think not.

I am not desensitized to violence. I wish there wasn’t a 9-11. I wish there were no wars. I wish there were no accidents, arsonists, rapists, pedophiles or murderers. I empathize with each victim, each family left behind. In reality or in fiction. I cringe and am sickened by every graphic detail.

I follow the news and true crime and this site. Not because I am some sicko, but in an effort to understand why people harm people, in an effort to help bring an end to rape, murder and violence.

I am not desensitized to it, I abhor it. Thanks for your thoughts Blink, and thank you for BOC and your unending advocacy for the victims and their families.

    Peace

  42. Mom3.0 says:

Hummingbird, Hello and thank you for your kind thoughts, my Misty mountain friend.

I think you made some excellent points. You wrote in part:

“It has been said that the laws around rape and child abuse and abductions, are not effective enough or taken seriously, because children who cannot defend themselves also cannot vote and thus are not an important political group or “voice.”

Until recently in American history, women and slaves were considered second class citizens, who were the property of the head of the household, along with his children. He was essentially allowed to do with them as he wished.

Perhaps there are many that feel this way still.

In a recent study of convicted rapists some important motivational factors in the sexual aggression of males were found.
Factors increasing men’s risk of committing rape repeatedly implicated are having anger at women and having the need to control or dominate them.[1]

Some of the Factors increasing men’s risk of committing rape include:

    alcohol and drug consumption
being more likely to consider victims responsible for their rape
being less knowledgeable about the impact of rape on victims
being impulsive and having antisocial tendencies
having an exaggerated sense of masculinity
having a low opinion on women
    lack of employment
being a member of a criminal gang
    having sexually aggressive friends
having been abused as a child
having been raised in a strongly patriarchal family/and or a family in which honor was considered more important than the health and safety of the victim

A General tolerance of sexual assault within the community is also a factor, as are Weak laws and policies related to sexual violence,in addition to, High levels of crime and other forms of violence which contribute to an overall feeling of entitlement just as societal norms that are supportive of male superiority allow for thoughts of sexual entitlement.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motivation_for_rape

Hummingbird, I had no idea that many felt that way regarding working in the criminal justice system. That is sad and scary.
Who will seek justice for the little ones, if it is considered to be punishment to do so?

  44. susan says:

@ Eloise, Mom 3.0: All of this fighting and violence that is being promoted on television with the “wrestling Monday Night Raw” and now this MMA (mixed martial arts), also, (Mccoy Martial Arts), if the web info I read about “owner” Rick McCoy, IMO promotes violence and these wanna be street fighters. I think some male weak egos can easily succumb to the feeling that they have a lot of power when they imagine themselves as “mixed martial arts fighters.”

I was particularly not impressed with one Myspace page which showed one MMA participant in his “fighting gym”, and so he could look like Mr. Tough Guy.

If you go and browse some of these MMA websites, it becomes obvious that there is the owner, who serves as “trainer” who gets money for training wannabe fighters. The one in Va which I found is supposedly owned by one named Rick McCoy, with locations in Richmond, Winchester, Charlottesville,…

Then you will see that they have links for products to buy like MMA sweatbands, little fighting suits, and even stuff for women.

My personal opinion is that it is a money making gambit for some people, the owner, and others get sucked in as participants who want to be like Brad Pitt in “Fight Club.”

I suspect that is where all of this started, with the movie, and the grown men who are looking to be like Brad Pitt in the movie are a sad lot indeed.

I have a lot of concerns that this sort of glorification of fighting with people in a “cage” could be the ticket for violence in the hands of a loser, weak ego type of person.

    All just my opinion.

I try really diligently not to perpetuate stereotypes, but I am seeing that in this case, with previously mentioned persons, absolutely.

I remember well the day that we learned of Morgan’s disappearance. My first thought being how did this absolutely stunningly gorgeous girl get abducted from such a populated place and where the **** were her friends?

Then, we found out just how stunningly beautiful she indeed was, inside and out. She shined the soul!!

Then, we met her family, her amazing family. Everything about them is just amazing. Oh, how my heart aches for the Harringtons. Each and every one of Gil’s post has had a profound effect on me. As a fellow mother and parent, I feel so intensely bad for them, I can’t even think of any words to properly define how I feel.

I remember the day Morgan was found. I was so very effected, so very sad that day as I was holding out hope she would be found alive. My husband knew something was wrong the minute I got home from work, just by the look on my face. That’s how much it effected me.

Now, here we are. 7 months since Morgan was found in this remote corner of the world on AF.

It has been 11 months. All of us still here, every day.

I remember. As a matter of fact, I’ll never forget.

But, other people are. They are forgetting. They are moving on. The bastards are moving on.

I wish I could make everyone stop forgetting and start remembering, then maybe people once they remember, they will start getting angry. Then, once people start getting angry, they’ll demand answers and justice. Then, maybe, just maybe, the people who are “in the know” will start feeling a little more pressure, feel a little more exposed, be more convinced to start covering their own ass instead of someone else’s. Maybe they will start feeling the walls closing in.

Somebody knows something. Somebody has that one piece of info that could break this case wide open. That somebody needs to talk. Now.

Eloise, I have often thought that Morgan may have been tasered, given cloroform, or of course the date rape drug. I see no other way, other than her leaving of her own free will which her mother seems to strongly feel was not the case, that she could have been taken without anyone seeing or hearing anything. It had to have been quick and quiet (a sign of a pro??). Morgan would have fought, screamed, something, unless she was incapable of doing so, in my own opinion. Unless she was tricked.
