Inspiring Vigilance: The Murder Of Morgan Harrington One Year Later

Charlottesville, VA– Sunday October 17 marks the one-year anniversary of the worst day of Dan and Gil Harrington’s lives. Although they were not yet aware of the horror that had befallen their Roanoke, VA family, the next morning their daughter’s purse was found on the grounds of the University of Virginia Lanigan Field. Morgan Dana Harrington had vanished.

MorganChosenByDadboc

While attending a Metallica concert with friends Sarah Snead, Amelia Melvin and Dan Cassagne with tickets purchased 6 months earlier by Morgan’s Dad, Morgan, for reasons unknown, was outside John Paul Jones arena at approximately 8:45PM.

Morgan attempted to re-enter the arena but could not locate her ticket and was denied access to return to the venue.  Shortly thereafter, Sarah called Morgan at 8:48PM looking for her and was told she could not get back in and would be attempting to locate a ride, according to Snead.

Various witness accounts and in some cases corroborating statements from Virginia State Police (VSP), place Morgan in different areas of the adjacent parking lots of JPJ over the following 45 minutes, moving toward the far perimeter of UVA property.

According to the VSP, there is a witness statement that a person matching Morgan’s description was seen hitchhiking alone on the Copeley bridge at approximately 9:30PM.

After several private law enforcement searches and two volunteer based efforts organized by the Harrington’s failed to locate her, Morgan Harrington’s remains were discovered by a prominent Charlottesville land owner on his remote 700 acre farm in Albemarle County,  8 miles South of JPJ arena, on January 26th, 2010.  Morgan’s death has been classified as a homicide, however her cause of death has not been released.

Until July, the case seemed to be at a virtual standstill from an investigative perspective, in fact the only arrest to date is that of a man who provided a false lead to VSP, and was prosecuted for it.

On July 1st, as a direct result of an article linking Morgan’s case to an unsolved sexual assault case in 2005 in Fairfax, VA published by blinkoncrime.com, a sketch of a man forensically linked to both the Fairfax case and that of Morgan Harrington was released by the Virginia State Police, albeit grudgingly, at first.

Behind the scenes, Dan and Gil Harrington, who were made aware of the connection a few weeks earlier, were adamant the sketch was critical to developing leads and warning others and demanded the sketch be posted on the VSP website; it was uploaded later that afternoon at Dr. Harrington’s request.

Virginia State Police have not commented publicly on the case in several months, but in a private correspondence with a concerned blinkoncrime.com reader, Lt. Joe Rader, leading the investigation for VSP,  said not only is the case not cold, but he has recently assigned additional manpower to it.

Dan and Gil Harrington, Morgan’s bereaved parents, along with Morgan’s beloved brother Alex, have spent the last year keeping Morgan’s case alive through the development of their own family blog, TV and radio appearances, and most recently, a meeting regarding safety concerns with new University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan.  This Sunday, a memorial plaque to promote safety and honor Morgan Harrington is being presented to the Harrington’s on the Copely bridge.

Note From the Editor

“How would you describe the Harrington’s?”  I am asked this question frequently.

I always respond the same way.  “I would not”.

The grace and poise these parents have shown in the face of the worst conceivable tragedy to befall a parent is not something I could wordsmith or articulate.

If the question comes from someone I feel may help their cause, I offer to make the introduction, but I would never presume to speak for them.

The Harrington’s have created a legacy in memory of Morgan that only parents of a 20-year-old blossoming artist, music loving, budding educator could.

I’m getting the distinct impression that there are some who wish we would just “let this go”…are we hindering the investigation by bringing this stuff up? To me, it makes a HUGE difference if her card was used post 9:30pm, but I doubt we’ll ever be privy to the truth about that little piece of info. The comments are dwindling fast on this thread, I don’t know what else to say or discuss. Morgan Harrington’s murder investigation is officially a cold case, imo, and will more than likely remain so until sketch and/or his cronies do this to another innocent victim.

  2. Questioner says:

Where would a rapist go and not be still raping? Where would a killer go and not still be killing? Who IS this monster with ties to Fairfax and Anchorage Farm and to the JPJ Arena? If in fact or theory he is connected in someway to Security, Law Enforcement, etc, where would he be hiding and not continuing his offenses, and LE not be seeing other similar crimes in other areas?

I can’t believe that this case is almost 2 years old and NOTHING seems to be coming together for LE. They need to go back and make perfectly clear what they have uncovered, or at the least clear up some of the rumors. If they don’t, this case will stay cold for a very long time, and that sickens me.

Where would a rapist go and not be still raping?…

I’ve been following the news about the discovery of a body in the Mt. Pleasant area of George Washington Nat’l. Forest in Amherst County. The Lynchburg News-Advance had a jump on the story prior to there being much mention of it in C’ville outlets. Since it is on federal property, FBI is handling the investigation and they are being tight-lipped about it. I’m sure that some of that has to do with ID and notification of family, but I can’t help but wonder if these cases (Morgan, Cassandra Morton, Clarke) are connected given the geographic link. Of course, Clarke is still considered missing.

You have to wonder if the FBI are trying to connect the dots with the investigators handling the other cases. Double negative alert: I’m not convinced that we don’t have a multiple offender at large.

  4. Questioner says:

I found this interesting yesterday, and had to wonder if something like this nut case didn’t pick Morgan up.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security is now involved investigating a man state police arrested for impersonating a police officer last month.

Roanoke resident DEA agent-in-charge, Tim Carden, said he was driving north on Interstate 81 in Botetourt County last month when an unmarked police cruiser passed him doing a high rate of speed.

Carden said he noticed the cruiser’s emergency lights were running.

He said it had Texas tags.

Carden alerted Virginia State Police to the cruiser, which was a black Dodge Charger.

Troopers stopped the car in Rockbridge County.

Police arrested Huy-Dien Nguyen, of Rhode Island, for impersonating a police officer and several other alleged offenses.

Officers found he had a firefighter’s uniform in the car.

State police say the Charger was a “police packaged car,” meaning it had radar, a police radio, lights, sirens, everything a police officer would need.

Homeland security is now involved since police believe Nguyen crossed several state lines.

Nguyen is due in Botetourt County general district court Monday morning at 11 o’clock for a hearing.

    Carden is a subpoenaed witness.

Was there only sketch’s DNA associated with Morgan or did they find other?

Here is the latest on the individual (male) that was found in GW National Forest last weekend. I’m guessing that, perhaps like the Childs-Metzler case, he saw something that he wasn’t supposed to see- very saddening:

  15. George says:

US Route 60 crosses the Appalachian Trail in the vicinity of the Mount Pleasant area of the national forest where the hiker’s body was found so it is not too isolated. There are a lot of private landholdings in the area as well, much like where Heidi Childs and David Metzler were found.

If the FBI is the lead agency in the recent hiker case because the body was found in the George Washington National Forest, why isn’t the FBI the lead agency in the Childs-Metzler case as well; those two kids were found in a campground in the Thomas Jefferson National Forest?

With all the passionate people for Morgan that have been here and many places elsewhere, why wasn’t Morgan’s case solved? People wanted so much to bring this/these monsters in, we would have done anything to help. I remember someone here even met with people and conducted interviews in bars with people, trying to help find answers. Many hours of investigation just on Blink. Why hasn’t this case been solved? I have had a hard time believing that Morgan could have had such a shitty night only to end by a random encounter with a predator. It boggles the mind at such bad luck and it is hard for me to believe it happened that way, but it looks like it did. It would have been easier if there were a “connection to Morgan” on who did this.

  21. mike says:

been spending a few days in C’ville. I’ve been over the Copeley bridge many times. I sure wish somebody would tell us exactly what side Morgan was on when she was supposedly hitch hiking and which direction she was facing. In any event, I recall when the Harringtons put up their memorial. It was on the side with the sidewalk. If you were using the sidewalk you were prob. going in the direction of jpj (back to the venue). The other side has a concrete strip of about one and a half foot wide (the direction leading to Ivy road).

I have observed (now almost two years later that there is a great deal of vegetation on both sides – mostly trees). If I get a chance I will park and walk over to observe more closely. The pt. of the memorial is just as the bridge begins to cross the rr tracks. (sadly it is gone now). It appears to be a fairly steep slope to the ground below. I am starting to think that the sketch was lurking under the bridge (like a troll) or in the vegetation on either side. From memory, wasn’t this his MO in the Phram attempted abduction – coming out of the vegetation?) Clear me up on that pt. please. If he snatched Morgan from the bridge, he may have taken her underneath. Wasn’t there reports of dogs picking up scent underneath? Then he must have had a car or a buddy with a car. I’m thinking it is possible that Morgan may have fallen over the railing if she was in bad shape, then the sketch got a hold of her.

Where I live (PA) our homeless, down and outers, and sexual criminals seem to gravitate toward the underside of a certain bridge. I am wondering what the history of this underside of Copeley bridge is to law enforcement. Is this a hangout? (it is a single track of rr that runs underneath but it must have much footage on either side). Is this something that le must know about – vagrants and criminals roosting under this bridge (now don’t go gettin down on me for defaming the homeless if they are there too).

I think we always assumed that Morgan was wisked away in a vehicle – maybe she wasn’t and was assaulted underneath Copely bridge then disposed of later, obviously be someone who knew AF and environs.

    just some ruminations for thought.

    keep up the fight!

  22. Amy says:

good constructive thinking Mike, all these things were also asked way back in the beginning and are certainly possible. It took about 9 months for the next public announcement dispelling many possibilities about her movements. i didnt know the memorial was impermanent? Did they at least clear some sight lines to make it safer?

Sorry to repeat things, but when looking at the crime reports there are many more than average arrests made that vert night, I wonder why as there are lots of concert weekends? Also people seem to call in something minor as’ suspected’ drunkeness and as every 911 is recorded it seems clear Morgan was not spotted by anyone calling 911. If however there was chatter among LE would sketch be able to pick that up? chatter like ‘ keep an eye out if she is okay etc’ Is that how he spotted the Urdu woman? Policemen working those barricaded chatting and him listening in for an opportunity. I think what you posted about a fake policecar might also be part of his MO. The wrong samaritan.

  25. maryfromthemorganthread says:

    Hey Blink,

Gosh with all the excitement today what with the earthquake and the hurricane and all, I didn’t want the world to come to an end without me telling you this story about my daughter. She’s a senior in college this year. Last year she took a semester-long course on self defense taught by the same guy who trains the city police. Last week the day before classes started she was at the mall and ‘felt’ a guy watching her. She moved to another store thinking it was just a weird feeling, looked up and there he was. She did this a few more times and kept seeing him until she had enough. She described him as an *older* guy (which could mean 35 IDK), small in stature, and she said she finally found a security guard and alerted him to the creep. She told the security guard (and I quote): I don’t want to have to TAKE HIM DOWN right here in the mall.

    BWA HAHAHAH!

What you do does make a difference Blink.

You made my day. She listened to her satellites. I am SOOOO Proud.

The self-defense class I took a few years ago was WELL worth it. It was taught by a police officer who memorably said, Two safety messages: (1) NEVER get in a car with an assailant–fight that with every ounce of energy and strength you have, because the odds of your survival go way down if you are forced into a car; (2) NEVER open your door at home to a stranger and keep your doors locked at all times!

  29. cali4nia says:

@mike – you brought up an interesting point. Some time ago there was discussion as to how Morgan could have sustained those broken bones. Some suggested falling out of a plane onto the field, hit by a car, and other ideas. Your suggestion that perhaps she fell off the bridge is interesting. Does anyone think her broken bones could have come from falling off the bridge?

  30. Amy says:

Could be Cali, some kind of accident, she sure seemed to be having trouble coordinating her steps, causes, who knows? alcohol, the weather, the stress, previous fall, someone attacked her on the bridge etc.

It must have been so obvious to the interactees that she was in trouble and Sketch was maybe one of those.

Its hard to figure out what happened with all the known facts, but without them we re destined for a failure in finding out. In any case I dont think Sketch was there at random and I don t think Morgan just dropped her items on the athlete s lot to go on and HH.

  31. Dan Harrington says:

New Blog from Gil Harrington from August 25, 2011

    Dear Mogo,

We are all taking on a bit of water just now. I am not exactly sure why. I think it has something to do with the time of year. This is the season when you were killed. It is also the start of school and all the promise that youth entails is on display at every corner, waiting for the school bus – or tiptoeing into the campus bookstore agog at new horizons. Those visas are closed to us now as we try to live an inexplicable life.

I went to Charlottesville yesterday. Just couldn’t stop myself. I had to advise caution and awareness to a new crop of kids in that place where a predator still walks free. I know students feel invincible, Teflon coated, but while a murderer roams they are in actuality – fresh meat, fodder. It is too late to save you my darling, but having felt this
anguish, I can’t quit on the next girl.

That’s what my trip was about: “Help Save the Next Girl”. I will not let your murder fade to beige and be swept aside – as suits so many. Towards that end, I went back to the bridge of your abduction. I weeded the boxwood plant and anointed its feet with iridescent glass jewels that catch the sunlight and spit it back like fire. I festooned the gray granite of your marker with multicolored prayer flags that gesture blessings into every breeze. It may be for naught, silly even, for I know they clear away these expressions soon after I leave, but my urge to adorn and make note of sacred ground is a mother’s right, in fact a
mother’s duty. Mine to perform – and so I shall.

Still I find it hard to believe that you are over, finito. How can that be? Morgan, you were so big. You drew in all the light and banged it back amped up x 10! So full of energy and life and fun! Now husks of bone and ash. What reality is this? Not the one I choose – but the reciprocal reality is madness. Though I dabble there at times, it
frightens and holds little comfort. Pity, or I might take up residence in that space of altered mind where I could conjure you at will.

    Morgan, I miss you so.

Well, we know Morgan’s abductor was familiar with the roads around JPJ Arena. He may have come back to plant her purse. He did come back to a semi-seedy off-campus housing area several days later to plant her t-shirt.

It can be surmised from Morgan’s injuries that her assailant has an anger management problem, or perhaps was hopped-up on drugs. LE should also be able to determine from Morgan’s injuries whether Morgan’s assailant was left or right-handed and maybe even his approximate height?

You would think LE would be getting all this info out to the public and keeping it in the public eye? And asking for help non-stop?
But instead we have nada, zip, silence.

The way Morgan’s case has been handled, along with the Childs/Metzler outrage, should make every Virginian’s blood boil. I would like to see these cases and several other high-profile unsolved cases be a factor in the next Governor’s race. A meaningful change in this state’s LE personnel is long overdue.

I’m not sure I ever told y’all, but I was a Katrina evacuee. I lived in that area during Ivan the year before and sat in standstill traffic for 12 hours to get out.

I was already planning on going out of town the wkend of Katrina & when it finally dawned on me that Sat how bad the storm was, I had very little time to pack up.

It took 3 wks to find out my house didn’t flood but all awhile I was kicking myself for not grabbing the important things when I evacuated.

Since, I have a mental list of valuable, special keepsakes that I will always know to grab if something similar happens again.

For anyone who lives in an area where they could ever be in the path of a hurricane…know that the worst can always happen to you. But with hurricanes (unlike tornados) you typically had days of warning. Even if the storm doesn’t look like it could affect you- it can. I suggest putting together a list similar to mine so that if you suddenly have an hour to get out…you aren’t kicking yourself.

(I left a box of photos & a laptop on my floor!!) of course I was also grabbing valuables for my roommates who were out of town that wkend) I got their heirloom pearls & the cat- but left all my stuff.

I was so blessed my house didn’t flood!!!

Still hopeful that answers are forthcoming in this case. I read all of the time and will continue to do so and contribute when I feel that I can, by casting a wide net while believing that just a few clues need to come together to break this open. I think that Alexandra is on the right track regarding “hangers on”; if the BB players were cleared, that doesn’t preclude others in their group from being involved or having helpful answers for LE.

I really become inspired- and saddened- when I read Gil’s posts. Morgan’s family are in my thoughts often.

The latest words of Mrs. Harrington are haunting. I cannot even fathom the pain of living each day with the loss and the unanswered quetions. Mrs. Harrington provides intimate glimpses into the horror of living as parent of a murdered child. Unless their is an arrest in this case, there is yet another parent facing the same horror. It is difficult to read here day after day and to bear the silence from LE. There has to be a focus of the investigation and most of here seem to feel that focus is fairly narrow ie security or other specific venue contracted person or persons. Like in the case of little Kyron, someone besides the perpetrator holds important information. Without LE sharing more it is impossible to know what specific information is known, unknown or simply disregarded. I respect that building a prosecutable case is the formost I consideration I just question in the wake of the disgusting FL outcome if we even know what makes a case prosecutable. Will be here until there are arrests in this and several other cases on this site. Thank you, Blink, and all of the people gathered here each day who bring hope, light and energy on behalf of those who have been violently silenced.

How hard can it be to interview and reinterview everyone in the parking lot that night? VSP? There has to be an answer to this mystery.

Hey- From what I remember- yes- Metallica had its own security as well as their being security from the arena itself-
    quote from Hook article:

“Security at the 16,000-seat facility is outsourced to RMC Events, a Richmond-based firm with a Charlottesville office. Company President Dan Schmitt has declined comment, referring questions to Arena management, who have also declined comment.”

Also it has been said that Security was also contracted out-

I am not sure if there was/is a direct link to HH Security- if so I dont remember the direct link. Perhaps Blink or another poster does.

I do know according to HH site, that they offer home security checks for homeowners on vacation. IIRC at least one neighbor was said to be out of town during this time-( The elderly woman- I cant remember her name) as well as the talk of DBass being gone on that night in Oct- I do not know if they opted for security measures though- nor do I know if so, that it was HH security-

but I found the info about security companies in general, providing this type of service interesting.

You bring up a good questions-IRT construction ect- I would also add to that- security for neighboring cemeteries- as I know there are several in the immediate area- as well as the area of the shirt find and even in the area of the FF assault.- In fact one on Jermantown road itself- an old slave cemetery. As we all know AF had its own cemetery also and although I do not know if these old cemeteries have watchmen – still in my research I found most job positions such as these, are filled by retired or off duty LE-

Security ofcourse does not need to be the tie in-I also wandered about the perp being someone that has a fascination with the history of these cemeteries ect

IDK anything really- as I said great questions TH – which prompted me to remember some of my research. Hope your questions spark some additional discussion.
