Karen Swift Missing in TN: Clothing Evidence Found-Neighbor John Hogshooter Arrested, Car Impounded
Dyersburg TN- 50 yards from the Willie Johnson residence of missing TN mother Karen Swift, John Hogshooter pulled into his driveway and was promptly arrested. Hogshooter is facing a animal cruelty charge (s).
As reported by Karen’s husband David on October 7th, prior to her filing for divorce three days later, the Swift family dog was allegedly poisoned by Hogshooter along in conjunction with a neighborhood dog.
John E. Hogshooter was confronted by Karen Swift on the day of the alleged incident, which prompted reports to police a few hours later. Hogshooter has worked as a roofer and carpenter in the local area, with a slew of poor reviews from people claiming to be former clients. It is not known if he ever worked with or for the Swift family business.
Jeff Box, Dyer County Sheriff, believes “answers in her case” have been found and await possible DNA testing.

So do you believe this disappearance stems from the poisoning of the dog and alleged confrontation by Karen? LE seems quite confident in their findings.
Too early for me on how this relates to Karen, and admittedly I have spoken with a few locals that say this guy is an absolute creep, but I would like to know how he got access to the dog to poison it in the first place.

I am just not there yet- If it were something like that, I find it hard to believe it would not be immediately noticeable in the driveway. If the picture in my first piece is her actual impounded Murano, it would appear the flat had to be on the left side, or the tire was changed/re-inflated.
That said, a felony dog poisoning is not likely to get a warrant to impound a vehicle- there has to be a probable cause nexis to do so.
Her Halloween costume still in the vehicle gives me pause.

This is effing depressing. I know this is not a guarantee that JH hurt Karen, but it looks like the direction the case is going.
If he did do this-what were the logistics of it?
I just can’t come up with a plan that sounds feasible. Maybe I’m trying too hard.
It’s her car being down the road with a flat that has me stumped.
Even if JH lured her out of her house in the middle of the night-how did he get her car keys? Or did he get her outside the house and then told her to go get her keys or he would hurt her kids?
Any chance David hired JH to do the dirty work?

Apr 26, 2009 who is this cowgirl…… she wants to talk about jennifer the best thing to do is not worry about her. and im taking it shelia is saying that cowgirl isnt kind to jennifer,but to the wardens, and that they talk about her mom and grandmother. so am i reading this right.because im here to tell you i could care less what anyone has got to say about me or my mom…..incase you are still slow cowgirl this is jennifer’s mom. my daughter has nothing to do with john hogshooter he is nothing to her……….but caine and lia is her brother and sister and they all 3 know that now and they look out for eachother like brothers and sisters does….look at your own kids before you try and tell mine something because she doesnt need your help…. she graduated with a 4.0 GPA and has a very good head on her shoulders, and has never needed or wanted anything from john hogshooter………..so why would you be jealous of her….ooppsss she has the look you wish you had and the brains to along with the looks…and she doesnt need a man to fulfill her life….so stay the hell out of my child’s business she knows everything about that because i didnt lie to her and told her exactly what kind of person her dad was. and as far as shelia i worked with her for years and we have never had no problems sounds to me like you just a jealous person that cant stand that someone has made something of their self and you still trying to find yourself and have nothing in life}

A Dyer County man whose driver’s license was revoked Tuesday in Circuit Court said his lawn mower ate it.
John E. Hogshooter, 35, of 1235 Meacham Rd., pleaded guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of an intoxicant (1st offense) and was sentenced by Judge Lee Moore to serve 11 months, 29 days in the Dyer County Jail, suspended to time served (eight days), to pay a $350 fine and to have his driver’s license revoked for one year.
Following the sentencing, Moore asked Hogshooter if he had his license on him and Hogshooter replied that he didn’t.
As for the poisoning of a dog…it is actually easy…I know because it happened to my dog and she NEVER leaves the yard…she is contained in a fence…all it takes is someone to toss out the poison…in her case rat poison. I have no clue who did this to my animal but it is very very cruel, trust me. and if I had a clue who did it, I would not be very nice.
Maybe there was some UGLY confrontation between the two?
I agree, Blink, that if we understood her leaving at 1:30am, we would understand a lot. i am somewhere between thinking this nutty neighbor saw an opportunity to harm her OR her husband saw an opportunity to pin liability on the nutty neighbor. I have no idea….

I’m not sure which story to believe yet, the one where she left or that she went to sleep with her daughter.
As for the Halloween costume, it being in the vehicle makes no sense. Do you have any idea what her Halloween costume was exactly? Was it worn over regular clothes I wonder?
If she was still living at the house, why wouldn’t she change at home and leave it there? Unless it was a rental and after leaving at 1:30, didn not plan to be back to the house before returning the costume.

Was her car pointed to or from her house when it was found with the flat tire? Was there a puncture in the tire or did someone just let air out to make it look like she had a flat?

My guess would be that she left the adult party at The Farms, once she received phone call from sick daughter…didn’t want to walk into girl’s home looking like cat/bat woman, so just took it off in car before picked up girl. Then went on home to take girl home.

The party was held at Dyersburg Country Club (golf course). I had originally heard the child(sick) was at a sleepover or all night Halloween party–so that’s a correction.
I can now understand that Karen may have taken the children home and wanted to go back out again. David may not have appreciated that, but then again she could have been attacked by someone from the party. Not likely a random criminal would be on the road near her home at that hour.

Excellent clarification, is this in “The Farms” subdivision? The thing for me is, the child was under the impression that she was sleeping with Mom. Now, I agree that could be a childs perception, but I find it highly unlikely that a Halloween party and sleepover is being held at a country club into the wee hours like that. Access closes down when staff clocks out, and if alcohol is served, would still fall under LCB rules of the jurisdiction.
I go back to the finding of the vehicle and the initial, since changed feelings from Dyer county SO about there seeing no foul play. That reads.. we have no earthly idea how the tire was flat like that to start, and moreover, could not be a slow leak scenario.
I believe items of hers were found, and expect to hear same. It is noteworthy if that is correct, that LE is not stating visual confirmations from anyone in her immediate family. I cannot say I am surprised, but I do fear this announcement.

All I can say is thank you Blink for covering this story. I have a great fear of what may have happened to Karen. My prayers are with Karen and her family.

He has not been before a judge yet so he would not have bail set on the instant charges against him, that is not unusual. He is arraigned tomorrow I believe.

I did see a comment on one website re clothes found near river – jeans with belt and also a sweater. I suppose that would be considered “rumor” but comment did sound credible. I don’t know how to copy so guess LE is diligently working to find a perp and victim. Knowing there are four children out there wondering what has happened to their mother is just too sad. Again, my prayers for this family.
I don’t know the family, but I am praying for the family and hoping Karen Swift will be found alive. I am familiar with the area because I went to law school in Memphis. I do criminal and family law, and a lot of times when people are planning a divorce even if they do not plan to leave the marital home, they rent or look into storage units and I am just wondering if either husband or wife did that in this case. My guess about the cell phone is that it could be tossed somewhere around Fallon Road, around Williams Street and Highway 51, because you can’t see the end of Fallon Road from Google aerial photos, it is a quick location to ditch something. He has H.S. education, but he knew how to use a computer because he set up a facebook account, so if he planned something like this maybe he used his computer. He set up that FB page from someplace, so where is the computer he used? JH allegedly poisoned two people’s dogs, Karen’s dog lived and the other neighbor’s dog died, have to wonder if he intentionally poisoned the dogs or if it was an accident. He had a girlfriend when he lived in apartments on Pennell St. near Kroger’s, where is his girlfriend? Maybe there was more than one person and more than one vehicle involved in her disappearance. I wonder how he wound up moving from Pennell Road to Harness Road, was he just staying with someone on Harness Road or did he rent or buy the home on Harness Road, and he was a roofer and carpenter, so I wonder where he keeps all his stuff stored? My thoughts, for what they may be worth, is if she hasn’t been discovered by searchers out in a field, then maybe she is in a storage unit or something like that, and if that is the case there is maybe still a chance she is alive. At any rate, I am praying for her and her children, can’t even imagine what they are going through with each passing minute her whereabouts and condition are not known.

It does appear, Blink, that there are several phases of The Farms golf community, to include The Farms golf course (‘Little Augusta’)

So this article from Nov. 2nd tells the story a little differently-I would like to know which version we have heard is accurate. I had not read this one before.
*It says that Karen left home at 1:30 am to pick up her daughter–her husband says he remembers hearing the pair enter the house.
So that makes it sound as if Karen had come home from the party earlier-then left again to pick up the daughter-then came home again with the daughter-then left again to never return.
That begs the question of why did she go out one more time?
Unless the daughter forgot something important that had to be picked up that night(medicine, favorite toy?) and Karen ran out one more time to get the item, but never made it back and met up with foul play right after she left the house that final time.

Do I have this right? We don’t know what time Karen left the house? First I thought she left right after 1:30 a.m., but now it seems she left sometime between then and 6 a.m.? Is that right?
If so, I can think of many reasons why she would have left the house. Not necessarily likely reasons, but possible.
*To meet a new love interest.
*She does have a new love interest, but has promised (takes lots of rules to live together peacably during a pending divorce) not to talk to him on the phone while in the house or in front of the girls. So she just went out to sit in the car and talk on the phone, and whatever happened began right there in the driveway. Maybe she never even managed to place her call, so phone records would not show this.
*Maybe she left her purse in the car, and just went to get it.
*She was sleeping with a sick daughter. Was she coughing so much that Karen couldn’t sleep? No cough medicine in the house? Maybe a quick run to the drug/grocery store to pick up something? (for some reason, especially seems reasonable to me if it were the early morning (say 5 a.m. or after) as opposed to the late night (say 2 a.m. or so).
*She’s a “drive to think” type. I know some of those. Especially in a difficult time, such as she seems to have been going through with the divorce. Someone just mentioned to me last week that they had been doing lots of 2:30 a.m. driving around when they couldn’t sleep.
Basically, unless the husband said when/why she left, it’s wide open.

There seem to be a lot of similarities between this case and the Jacques Waller case:
1) Attractive women going through a divorce.
2) Last seen be soon-to-be-ex-husband (although Karen’s husband only admits to hearing her)
3) Child pick-up/delivery involved with last encounter
4) Car found abandoned with flat tire
5) No signs of struggle at home or in car.
6) Locations were about 108 miles apart
I doubt that there is a serial abductor. But the most recent event seems almost to have been inspired by the earlier case. The locations being relatively close, there was likely a lot of media coverage of the Cape Girardeau case in Dyersburg.
It’s probably a coincidence, but there are so many similarities.
I am also curious about the Catwoman outfit. “Catwoman” has always been a very sexy character (even in the family-friendly 1960′s series – my favorite was Jule Newmar). Most of the Catwoman outfits I have seen have been skin-tight plastic outfits which are worn as primary clothing and would not do well worn over regular clothing. This would suggest that she changed clothes prior to coming home.
Possibly she could have the loose “pull over” type outfit like the kids wear, but my experience is that adult women who dress as catwoman want to look sexy.
I do not feel the outfit was inappropriate, and do not feel it had anything to do with her disappearance, but knowing which type of outfit would give us a better idea of the timeline.
I cached it all before I wrote the first piece on the case- I am not posting your post because there are small children involved whose Mommy is missing, I know you understand and thank you for your sensitivity.
