Ending The Nittany Nightmare: Penn State Pre-Game Plea, An Open Letter To President Rodney Erickson

An Open Letter to Penn State University President Rodney Erickson

With much respect -Do what I say, and do it today.

Hire the best Public Relations firm in the country for PSU’s needs.   I am redacting that recommendation for the publication of this open letter, but it is included in my email to you.  Don’t spend the time or manpower to run through the approved vendor lists and bid it out- not that kind of gig.  The Board of Trustees can WebEx if necessary and this is the kind of emergency proxy was invented for.

Once retained, have the agency facilitate meetings through their agents with Bill Parcells and Bill Cowher immediately.  Specify no leaks to the press until after they occur and by mutual agreement.   Cowher may be the low hanging fruit on this one,  he is returning to CBS next year.

If neither is interested in a head coach commitment of an 8-1 Big Ten team, follow their recommendations about who to contact next and ask them; beg if necessary, if they would be willing to consider a consulting gig for the recruitment process.  Urban Myer is a fine coach and leader, but regardless of who PSU ultimately chooses, efforts to rebuild the PSU brand must start with a nationally recognizable face of a trusted and respected winner, like yesterday.

Champions attract champions and without that, it is like asking collegiate coaching candidates to walk into the lion’s den (pun intended) wearing a raw steak necklace.  You will not even get one to tour Lasche, trust me on this.

This strategy would likely also include a public facing spokesperson effort, and worth every penny if that is all you can get a commitment for from either coach.

Pay them to sit in the lobby.  Pay them to ride the elevator a few times, but get them on grounds.  Pay them to have a motivational meeting with the team.

If you have some strong players they could attach to quickly and produce an  “I remember when I was a young fig on the tree” memory synapses, it couldn’t hurt.

Instruct all team members never to roll the eyes should the phrase “When I was your age we played ball with pads made of glass and never wore cleats in the snow”;  if they told me that I would believe it.

This is the kind of benchmarking that will revitalize wilting spirits of a young athlete, and the parents with the trembling hand over the eject button.

Half the free world is digging old milk cartons out of the recyclables to see if they recognize any kids they may have seen with Sandusky or on the sidelines of a game- they need a new visual association.

As you already know, if you are lucky enough to get this far, they will advise you to release every staffer from the interim athletic director to the water boys that were ever part of Paterno’s camp or rolled up his pants before the game. Do it.

This might be a good time to allow a try before they buy scenario if either are willing, as “guest coaches” to finish the season.

While I am at it, I might suggest a reality miniseries of the process- I know some folks from HBO familiar with the Hard Knocks of football, I would be glad to make a connection.

Donate those proceeds to Coach Parcells or Coach Cowher’s disadvantaged children’s charity of choice which is vetted in advance by a specially appointed member chosen by the new Ethics officer.

Point is, you need immediate public support and that will require immediate damage control or your Titanic does not even have the measly lifeboat option.

The public perception is that there is more to this horror movie after the commercial, and the commercials are disappearing as well.

Your job is to employ the resources that can change the channel when the public is not looking, and forget what they were watching in favor of the new programming, which includes sponsors aligned with that audience.

It is about as transparent of a plan as I can offer- with hope and promise to the innocent victims of this tragedy.

Your remark about JS graduating at the top of his class. This guy was a star athlete. Was he really all that smart or did the football program furnish him with tutors and test takers so that it would appear that he was smart? This is not uncommon for football and basketball players in the last fifty years. A look at the actual grade books for the courses may not give the true story for they could have been altered as well.

Protecting a football or a basketball or other highly visible athletic program from grade or behavior scandle is IMO job one for a lot of athletic directors and head coaches.

I wonder when Bradley was McQ’s roomie. During the 2002 incident? If so, it would be hard to believe McQ didn’t go home and say, “Guess what I just saw…”

    12. Why don’t they just promote Bradley – he’s been a Penn State player and coach for 37 years. His defenses are perennially ranked in the Top 5 in several categories.

Under normal circumstances, Bradley’s promotion would most likely be a foregone conclusion. But now, he’s a long shot at best due to the fallout from the Sandusky scandal. Bradley was a housemate of key scandal figure Mike McQueary, a former Penn State assistant coach, for a few years in the mid-2000s and also testified before the grand jury. He replaced Sandusky in 2000 and worked under Paterno, two key figures, in the scandal.

Bradley professes he has no knowledge of an illegal activity regarding the scandal. Still, it is widely believed the search committee will clean house with this hire.

If you go to that dauphin court’s pdf link above, and do a word search for ‘dranov’ you see just how vigorous the battle between the attys was wrt allowing MMcQ to state what Dranov’s role was that night at his dad’s house.

MMcQ had just stated, prior to the objection, that he and his dad had considered calling the police re the shower incident. And had already decided to contact Paterno. I think his atty was possibly trying to get testimony that would indicate Dranov advised against calling the police. But the judge wouldn’t allow that testimony.

We already know, supposedly from Dranov, that he didn’t think police HAD to be called, since Mike didn’t see insertion or a Sandusky erection; Dr D asked some probing questions of Mike 3 times.

I want to hear more about Dranov, but we have to wait on the court to allow it, don’t we?

IDK what all Ronald W Roskens has been up to since the unfortunate incidents known as the “Franklin Scandal”. Just a quick look-see shows he and wife working hands-on at a 2010 event at Mount Michael School in the Bronx. And gives a brief bio of him, see pg 11. Oddly, it says wife Lois is mother of their children. What does that mean? That he’s their stepfather and not bio-dad? IDK. At:

And they set up a scholarship program there, as listed in the 2009-2010 annual report, at:

IDK if this matters. Only looked long enough at the school to see in Nov, 2011 a now-fired Asst. Princ there admitted to viewing child porn on a school computer, I think. There may be more. This is a well-respected Catholic prep school; students find it quite harsh in its discipline; and someone said nuns still dress in full habits.

    From 1988, an interesting time-frame, there’s this:

    “—-New York Times 5/14/88
Rev. Bernard Lynch, 41, and Brother Timothy Brady, 41, are INDICTED
for sexually abusing students at a Catholic preparatory school in the
Bronx, Mount St. Michael Academy. Lynch, a former campus chaplain, is

In response to your comment about being moved to the head of the class for JS. I can’t prove anything regarding his ability to get good grades in his classes or how much help he had.

I was just stating that many athletes at the college level and some at high school level get all kinds of help in order to pass classes.

In Texas, there is a law on the books that keeps any young person from representing a school in any type of athletic or scholastic contest unless they have passing grades. This is called “no pass, no play”. Several schools have been caught inflating the grades of star athletes in order to allow them to play.

I will be out of town for the next three or four days for Christmas .

AG Corbett & Centre County DA Gricar announce breakup of $1.5 million heroin & cocaine organization

STATE COLLEGE – Attorney General Tom Corbett and Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar today announced that agents from the Attorney General’s Bureau of Narcotics Investigation (BNI), along with officers from the Centre County Drug Task Force and Pennsylvania state troopers, were in the process of arresting as many as nine suspected heroin and cocaine dealers operating in Centre County.

Corbett identified the alleged leader of the drug organization as Taji “Verbal” Lee, 24, originally from Newark, New Jersey. Lee is currently being held in the Centre County Jail on related drug charges.

All of the defendants are scheduled to be preliminarily arraigned before State College Magisterial District Judge Bradley P. Lunsford. The case will be prosecuted in Centre County by Senior Deputy Attorney General Michael T. Madeira, of Corbett’s Drug Strike Force Section.

Paxson has declared his intention to sue the Centre County District Attorney’s Office following the outcome of the case, citing the hundreds of thousands of dollars he lost when his stock as a prospect in the 2006 NFL Draft plummeted.

After the newspapers challenged an initial ruling, Centre County Court Judge Bradley P. Lunsford vacated the orders requiring the deletion of any articles about three of Amendola’s clients.

My son was in a junior college program during his high school years known in these parts as Running Start. He earned an AA before his 18th birthday, and the keynote speaker at commencement was Dr. Mark A Emmert, who BTW was a former junior college student (at the same jc) who transfered on to the UW just 5 credits shy of an associates degree. He not only spoke that June, and discussed his future new job at the NCAA, but was awarded an honorary associates degree. It was all very amusing.

To find that Erickson (replacing Spainer) is also a UW alumn is interesting to say the least. These two men are in what would seem critical roles to determine the fate of the Penn State football program. Both men were at UW ’73-’75 it seems. I wonder if they had/have a close relationship and what this will mean.
    ——————————————————————
Dr. Mark A. Emmert became the fifth president of the NCAA in October 2010. Prior to assuming his current role, Emmert had been president at his alma mater, University of Washington, since 2004 where he led the university to its standing as second among all public and private institutions in research funding with $1 billion in grants and contracts per year. Before returning to his alma mater, Emmert was chancellor at Louisiana State University from 1999 to 2004.

Rodney A. Erickson assumed responsibilities as President of The Pennsylvania State University on November 9, 2011. Previously, Erickson served as Penn State’s executive vice president and provost since July 1, 1999. As provost, he was chief academic officer of the University, responsible for administration of the University’s resident instruction, research and continuing education, and for the general welfare of the faculty and students. As executive vice president, Erickson served as the chief executive officer in the president’s absence, and was centrally involved in most operations of the University.

Erickson holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Minnesota, and was awarded a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Washington in 1973. He began his academic career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before joining the faculty at Penn State in 1977. He was promoted to professor in both geography and business administration in 1984. He was named dean of the Graduate School in July 1995, and in March 1997 he assumed the additional responsibilities of vice president for research.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — At one time, Penn State athletics was part of an academic department.

Erickson recently told the Penn State Faculty Senate that the role of intercollegiate athletics is a national, cultural issue that presidents and chancellors with the NCAA and the Big 10 Council of Presidents and Chancellors will take up.

Penn State’s football coach now reports to the athletic director, who reports to the president. That hasn’t always been so. In 1930, Penn State established the School of Physical Education and Athletics, and the football coach was its director. The school changed course over the years, but for half a century, athletics was part of an academic college.

Then, in 1980, the trustees removed Intercollegiate Athletics from the College of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and made it its own unit.

With the Catholic center the Paterno’s funded, named after Sue, the Knights of Columbus possible link to JoePa and Freeh being close to the Opus Dei, I have to wonder if the Penn State scandal somehow ties into the church scandal. FWIW.
    ——————————-

Today, former FBI Director Louis Freeh is known to be close to Opus Dei. According to Bucciarelli, Freeh’s children attend Opus Dei schools and Freeh knows Opus Dei members. Bucciarelli also says that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia knows members of the Work, and Scalia’s wife is reported to be an Opus Dei member.

    http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2003/4/10/opening-the-doors-of-opus-dei/

Another concept that is familiar to OD is never speaking ill of a priest. Opus Dei priest and director of The Catholic Information Center in Washington, DC, Father C. J. McCloskey, wrote in a recent article, “Speak often positively about the Church and the greatness of being called to a life of dedication in it. Never speak negatively about persons who have dedicated their lives to God no matter what their human failings might be.” This philosophy is disturbing. This concept is not only outdated, but in light of the current sex scandal in the church, extremely dangerous.

    http://www.odan.org/tw_apple.htm

Opus Dei is an increasingly strong presence on U.S. college campuses. Traditionally, their efforts to attract new members has led them to colleges and universities

Mysterious Catholic organization Opus Dei is behind the $7.45 million purchase of a townhouse at 31 E. 38th St., around the corner from its headquarters. The house was bought by the Rosemoor Foundation, whose Web site says it funds “cultural centers and activities whose origin and mission are inspired by the Catholic Prelature of Opus Dei.” The foundation bought the place from hedge-funder Albert J. Fitzgibbins III, a founder of Stonington Partners. A neighbor told us,

“There were fears they would use it as a halfway house for the rehabilitation of pedophile priests.”

But a spokesman for Opus Dei — which was scandalized in what many considered an inaccurate portrayal in “The Da Vinci Code” — said the house would be used “as a residence for women where they would be offered philosophical, theological and spiritual guidance.” Calls to Rosemoor and Fitzgibbins were not returned.

But the truth is stronger than slander. Catholicism is a faith of love. I encourage them to flap their yaps as often as possible, in as many venues as possible, and so does their lawyer, lol.

Who does this make any sense to in a case carrying over 400 years imprisonment potentially with public gj testimony?

Perhaps it is a good idea they drive around during a parade in a convertible in a pink pill box hat?

Glib yes. Did I mean to leave the stinger in? Yes.

    2005

Criminal charges have come to light against a distinguished Penn State University professor and a retired Pittsburgh real estate agent.
They’re accused of sexually abusing a 12-year-old boy in the 1970s. The boy is now in his 40s and is pressing charges.

Penn State says Neisworth is officially retired, though he still has a working phone number and e-mail at Penn State’s Cedar Building. He is also teaching a Penn State distance education course on autism and was interviewed about it a few months ago on Penn State’s public broadcasting station, WPSX-TV.

McLaughlin told Team 4 the men took him to locations in Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania to molest him. He was 12 years old at the time. He says he recently obtained a tape-recorded admission of guilt from one of the suspects.

In 2005, Neisworth, Smith and Goeke were charged with abusing McLaughlin in Maryland. Of the four states in which McLaughlin was abused, only Maryland allowed criminal charges 20 years after the events. But under Maryland law, recordings made without the consent of both parties are not allowed as evidence, so McLaughlin’s tape could not be used. The charges against Neisworth and Goeke were dropped, while Smith was acquitted.

Speaking to the New York Times about being dismissed by Penn State officials, McLaughlin said of Neisworth that “They just didn’t want to hear it, didn’t want to investigate to make sure. He was their guy.”

He is the author of 12 texts in early intervention and special education and has directed 10 personnel preparation projects. Dr. Neisworth is founding co-editor of the journal Topics in Early Childhood Special Education and serves on its board of editors as well as on the boards of Journal of Early Intervention, Infants and Young Children, Child and Family Behavior Therapy, and others. He is Academic Coordinator for the Pennsylvania Autism Institute and the Pennsylvania Department of Education course sequence in applied behavior analysis. Dr. Neisworth’s present research focuses on family-centered approaches to early assessment and intervention.

In 2001, he filed a civil suit against Neisworth and Goeke in State Superior Court in Camden County, N.J. That case was settled in 2002, and the alleged victim said he received a cash settlement, but the terms are not public.

Neisworth retired from his full-time professorship in 2002, but he continues to teach a distance-education course, university officials said. Neither Neisworth nor his lawyer could be reached for comment.

Neisworth is the author of at least a dozen books on early-childhood education and autism.

“He has an impeccable record as a scholar, and he’s been a fine member of the faculty here,” said David H. Monk, dean of the university’s College of Education. Penn State is not investigating Neisworth’s activities at the university, Monk said.

Thanks for all the links to Opus Dei. The Catholic relegion has many, many good works for the people. However, they are not perfect and as a result, they have created some really bad things as well.

The Catholic priest scandal and the current harboring of illegals from Mexico and other countries in central America are just two. The big one is the creation of the “dark ages” between 800 AD and 1250 AD although they did do the research necessary to bring the Europeans out of the morass. The love of GOD and your fellow humans is the key, regardless of the rituals and beliefs of any relegious group.

    Blink
Glad to see that Blinkete is taking AP courses. Give her all the help and encouragement to keep doing this. The regular courses have been dumbed down and do not develop the skills needed. The AP courses usually match the content of regular courses prior to the 1960′s.

In some school districts they can begin taking college level courses during their junior year. She should think about doing this too.

Learning is a lifelong endeavor. One has to develop good basic skills to begin to build their knowledge pyramid.

    Issues…

Sandusky met Dottie Gross at a picnic in his hometown of Washington, Pa., right before his senior year of college, according to his autobiography, “Touched: The Jerry Sandusky Story.” “I was always very shy and backward; never one to be aggressive socially,” he wrote. “Even though I spent time talking with Dottie a couple of times, I couldn’t quite bring myself to ask her out on a real date.”

Instead, his mother did it for him.

They bonded over a love of children, he wrote, and after they married, decided to adopt children because they couldn’t have any of their own. They planned to adopted five. The sixth — Matt Sandusky — was a Second Mile child adopted as an adult in the 1990s.

Sandusky has been a long-standing member at St. Paul’s United
Methodist Church. Its November newsletter, in fact, indicates that his son Matt will soon be inducted as a new member.

Asked about Sandusky’s role there, the pastor, the Rev. Ed Zeiders, said via e-mail:

“I am not able to participate in the conversation. We have developed an action plan for caring for all the persons involved, and that plan is under way.”

Very true. She can throw some hard ones b/c of her personal experiences. IIRC, she had interviewed pedophiles who were serving time. She asked the hard core questions most don’t want to know the answers to….but she got those answers. They were nothing short of mortifying and evil. The good that came out of this was becoming educated on this type of perp; how they perceive children, how they target them and perhaps what lead them to become pedophiles. It was invaluable information for the mental health field, imho.

Interviewing Sandusky serves no purpose, and like Conrad Murray, could reveal his lack of remorse and guilt. It could back fire, but as Blink as pointed out many times….these guys are too arrogant to think so. Perhaps the victims gain?

My mistake about the articles…..it seems JS and his DT are doing the shopping, not the other way around. Oprah’s network is hurting but too date, neither O or BW have responded (www.tmz.com).

Regardless, this is the precedence and legacy of Baez. Essentially, it’s about an early pay day. It’s an insurance policy for the defense and nothing more. When the civil suits come up, Sandusky won’t have a dime, just like the creature. I simply resent that check book journalism sensationalizes the perp, while encouraging defense lawyers to take short cuts. I’m surprised more bars are not reviewing this process more closely.

Happy New Year my sweet friendies. Just wanted to drop in, share my 2 CAD cents and shout out lots of love! Be kind to each other XO!

  41. beejay says:

AHA! We have an opportunity to intervene, perhaps. As soon as anyone hears of a planned TV interview please, please post it here. With contact details. Personally I will contact the media to support the interview, with suggested questions. Anyone want to start a list?

Here’s my start, and my list is on my office wall for additions:

    1) Mr Sandusky, you are not the first to be “accused” at PSU. Another respected professor, John Neisworth, had a similar experience, which was settled out of court and out of his pocket. Are you aware of what happened with Dr. Neisworth? Have you been in contact?
[subtext: did you two share kids or visual recordings???]

    2) Mr Sandusky, are you aware of any other people at other facilities, or perhaps foster parents, who have been accused of similar crimes?
[subtext: again, trying to get info about where the other pedos might be]

ETC. I will look here for others’ thoughts. I want to round up the pedophiles NOW, trying to limit the assaults on kids NOW. We’ll pick up the enablers as we go along.

What a happy New Year’s gift! So hope it’s true!

Good start beejay and good suggestion-

Mr. Sandusky, you are on record saying that your work with disadvantaged children began as an example from your late parents Art and Evie- did your Father ever endure similar allegations as a result?

You come from a rather large family from both your Mothers and Father’s sides, why do you think there has been little to no comments in your defense, in fact, very little discussion about your extended family altogether?

Mr. Sandusky- describe the floor plan of the basement of your home.

Mr. Sandusky- you recently applied for a head coaching job at Juniata College, which they declined to offer you based on a background check. Did you personally advise them of any investigations pertaining to your positions or activities listed on your resume? What professional references did you provide?

Mr. Sandusky- there have been rumors circulating that there may be other individuals associated with you personally or The Second Mile, that ultimately will face similar allegations- are you familiar with who those individuals are and have you been asked to offer any information in that regard?

Mr. Sandusky- Have you ever met Ray Gricar?

    Feel free to add-
    B

  42. beejay says:

Erose: yes, and Sandusky was allowed to speak in front of his church’s entire congregation about his wonderful work at The Second Mile. I can’t get over that yet.

Commenting about what was leaked about the investigation and why. Also accuses Corbett and his pals of having done the fix on this several yrs ago. IDK, but you do have to ask ‘why this now’ when leaks appear.

The PA Centre County Community is tiny in comparison to most “capital” demographics.

I remain galled to the nth degree that the “goings on” which wreak of millions of dollars of inappropriately granted bids, consulting gigs and dead prosecutors chums a fish bowl where Jerry Sandusky hides out in the sandcastle in the middle.

That sandcastle has many rooms, I wonder who else lives there.

Also, I saw something unrelated to this case where Ganim’s Patriot News totally shut down their coverage, which raises a caution for me.

  44. beejay says:

    Go Blink!

The foster care program, and many mental health services in 3 counties 9n PA (including Centre) are privatized. If anyone wants info on the company that holds that services contract, let me know.

I happen to like privatization, but it does add another level for greed and corruption to enter, if it’s going to. This is just making me nervous.

Have you heard the Costas interview, the UNEDITED version erose?

I guess I should say have you read it, because I believe it was only released as a transcript, similar to the NYT interview.

It is a classic pedophile response as if it were scripted for same- chilling.

I continue to fixate on the origin of Mr. Sandusky’s attraction- pedophilia is highly cyclical.
