Missing Iowa Girls Lyric Morrissey and Elizabeth Collins: Dad Daniel Morrissey Has Long History With Burglary, Drugs, Battery, Possible Mental Illness

Missing since Friday July 13th from right outside the Lederal Safety Shoe shop since about 12:15 PM,  Lyric Morrissey, 11, and her cousin Elizabeth Collins, 8 are the subject of an exhaustive air and foot search for the third day.

Both girls bikes were found 2 miles away from where they were last seen at Meyers Lake next to route 27.  About 20 yards away,  the bag and cell phone of one of the girls was also located.

Misty Morrissey,  mother of Lyric, believes the girls have been abducted.

Investigators are stumped and frustrated they have not found any sign of Lyric and Elizabeth whatsoever and compared the disappearance to” vanishing into thin air”.

Heather Collins,  Elizabeth’s mother, is Misty Morrissey’s sister.   Lyric Morrissey also has a brother,  Dillin.

As with any alleged abduction, family becomes the initial focus of investigators in an effort to rule them out.

Daniel Eugene Morrissey,  Lyric’s father and Elizabeth’s former Uncle by marriage,  has had a very long and varied criminal past.

While it is of course not known if Mr. Morrissey has had any recent contact with his daughter, court records show that he was investigated for a dismissed domestic abuse battery with a weapon /mental illness charge less than one year ago.

He has been in and out of the corrections system since as early as 1997.

Mr. Morrisey has a myspace  set to private entitled urmomsamessedupbitchhh.

At the time of this publication,  calls to Black Hawk PD for comment on this story had not been returned.

No clothing description or bike specs have been released.

Hi, Mike. Do you live in the area of Meyers lake? I was just wondering what the path is made of–gravel, asphalt, concrete?
Thanks for orienting to the map, also. I’m still pretty turned around looking at it for the ‘crime scene.’ Thank you.

Blink, every time I open this article, I see “Lederal Saftety Shoe” and now want to ask you think the perpetrator could be wearing those type of shoes?

It’s just floating out there and my gut is looking for ‘footprints,’ so to speak.

  4. Word Girl says:

Oh, Jane, I meant to mention the high tops. The shoes probably wouldn’t be laced all the way up and the tops sort of slouch down and don’t look so tall. It’s a hip hop/breakdance fashion, but you’ll see it in all sorts of genres. And if you want to learn how to do millions of lacing styles, just look on ehow.

I don’t think the shoes would look especially odd, but as conservative as I am, I wouldn’t let my kiddo wear them bike riding (nor flips, either, no ma’am). And where the heck were the helmets?

The helmet thing has been bothering me like mad.

Even though Mr. Carpenter, who lives TWO blocks from Meyers lake said that the girls rode their bikes past his house often-and his wife confirmed that too-Lyric’s grandma said that she doesn’t even think the girls knew the way to Meyers lake!

So there has been a disconnect for quite some time as to what the girls did, who they spoke to, and where they went.

The Carpenters said that “Elizabeth always stopped and talked to people-she was a friendly little girl.”

If this were perpetrated by some ‘insider’, such as an ex, they’d have known that the cell phone was deactivated & only used to play electronic games, & wouldn’t have trashed it – it sounds like it’s an older model phone that didn’t have GPS capabilities like more late-model phones (I’m only speculating here). Also, an ex wouldn’t have left the little purse behind; girls love their purses & carry them everywhere – I used to wrap the straps of mine around my bike’s handlebars when I used to ride…carrying my mini-trolls, perfumed mini dolls (I’m dating myself here LOL). Only someone disinterested in the girls’ well-being, someone cold-hearted whose objective was speed (get in/get out) would’ve done that. I can’t help but think that the placement of the bikes is as a red herring, & that the girls were lured there a week after having gone to the park the week before & possibly ran into “the lure-er” there. Finally, I thought the g/m saw the girls as they rode off @ 11:30am, so how she spotted them @ 12:15 IDK.
I have a large lake/reservoir in my residential area that abuts 3 other ones & takes an hour to encircle by roads if you began & ended at its 1 paved entrance/exit. Many ppl go there to escape the summer heat at lunchtime; in fact, there’s more ppl there at that time of day than in the evening. The adult bikerider says they had to swerve to avoid the girls’ bikes, at approx 12:30pm. If they were abducted & their bikes left behind, it was done very close to the time they’d left “Aunt Heather’s” home & g/m’s sight; 11:30am-12:30pm. IMO. Too bad the homeowner near the lake didn’t have a better idea as to when they actually had eyes on the girls riding. jmho of course.

    Word Girl

While you and Blink are concerned about the proper attire for these girls to ride bikes, the real truth is the girls have probably mostly raised themselves. They seem to go places that the family does not know about, so whatever the girls could find to wear is probably how it really happens.

In my generation, children rode bikes sometimes hours a day with no helmets. We had no concept of what they were. However, we did have proper shoes. High top tennis shoes were laced to the top, if worn. Athletic shoes as we have them today did not exist. We only had one bad accident when one of the guys was hit from behind by a drunk driver while throwing his early morning paper route. A helmet would have prevented the need for the plate that was put in his skull.

We did some crazy things on bikes and got away without permanent dammage. Things like riding backwards while seated on the handlebars down the two block long hill used by the soapbox derby for their races. It was a 35% grade. It would have given my mom a heart attack if she had seen that.

  12. Word Girl says:

Oh, ATG, we did crazy stuff on bikes, too. I almost mastered a handstand on my handlebars. But that steep grade, yeah that was scary, especially while standinh on the board I’d nailed to my clamp- on roller skate. Two skates equalled two skateboards!

Blink, I hope your mom coming home is doing better, although I know there are other reasons from coming home. Peace be.

FBI dive team will join search for missing Iowa girls

An FBI dive team from Los Angeles plans to depart Wednesday for Iowa to assist in the search for two girls missing since Friday, authorities said.

With few leads in the case, much attention has been turned toward the five-acre lake. It was dragged over the weekend, and on Monday two FBI scent dogs using the girls’ shoes picked up a trail near there. Authorities have been draining the water for more than two days, but an FBI spokeswoman said the process was slower than expected.

“We honestly thought it would be finished by today, but it won’t be,” spokeswoman Sandy Breault said.

She said the incoming dive team plans to dredge the water, which is dark and cluttered with debris. “When you’re around the edge, it looks clear, but it’s really murky,” she said.

Laura Eimiller, spokeswoman for the FBI’s Los Angeles division, confirmed that several members of its Underwater Search and Evidence Response Team were expected to leave Wednesday for Iowa.

“We’ve been asked to assist with resources,” she said.

Eimiller said the divers are “essentially a CSI team” and use underwater cameras and other equipment to search for clues and bodies. The FBI began its diving program in New York in the 1980s and now has a handful of teams across the country. Los Angeles formed a team in 2003, and it’s assisted law enforcement agencies around the world.

Family members of the missing girls hope that the water will reveal clues to the girls’ whereabouts but said they’ve been told there’s little chance that the girls are in the lake.

Although family members and many others in the small town of 4,700 believe that the girls were abducted, authorities are unable to issue an Amber Alert without proof of a kidnapping.

Registered sex offenders in the area have been interviewed, and travelers’ cars have been stopped and searched, but neither have led to significant information.

And…..there it is. I was just about to comment about Lyric’s mom’s behavior in interviews in regards to possible meth use–when I read this article. Answers a lot of questions for me.

I have way too much experience in regards to a meth addict in my own family. The inappropriate laughing, lack of any worry no matter how serious the situation, etc., is something I’ve seen far too often.

My relative lost custody of all three of her sons when they were young, after they were all sexually abused by her meth head buddies. Those boys are all grown up now and guess what. She still talks about what a great mother she was! WTF? Meth does really crazy things to maternal instincts-such as cancelling them out completely…

Okay, so another meth mom. What drugs was Father Dan involved in?
Also meth, likely. Anyone know?? It’s anyone’s guess how much real parenting these poor girls really had. Obviously, in this profile, the girls may have sought attention from strangers or other adults
since they weren’t getting much at home. Exactly the kind of kids that
    pedophiles like Sandusky look for.

So, that opens the possibility, although pure speculation on my part,
that this may have been a “drug hit”. In other words, Dan or Misty owed someone some money – in which case they may be being held alive
until the cash is paid. Mom may know this, and who did it, but cannot say anything, which would mean her death and the girls. Which may explain her suspiciously calm behavior?
Or, Dan or Misty may have given turned informant (mom violated probation and may have needed a deal with LE). If they did give up names to LE, or the perp THINKS they did – then it’s more likely that the girls are dead already.
Again, this looks like a pro job, possibly someone higher up in the drug network who had the skills or resources to kidnap the girls with no clues left behind.
If the parents are involved at all, I believe this is the most likely scenario. Otherwise, it’s a sexual predator crime. One of the two
has got to be the case.

    @ Sierra (July 18, 2012 at 5:11 pm)

I think that even if the bad guy (BG) is a stranger, he could have known that the cell phone didn’t work aside from being used to play games…

I really get the creeps about the earlier “disappearance” of Lyric and another cousin, wonder what she/they were up to, and can’t help but worry that she was being selected/groomed through earlier encounters. If this is the case, then it wouldn’t surprise me if the BG asked whether the girls had a cell phone or otherwise drew out the information that it didn’t work aside from playing games.

Then again, a stranger could also have (1) not worried at all about the phone’s capabilities since he was ditching it at the lake (in this case, any pings wouldn’t follow him/them beyond the point of abduction, and the cell phone’s last location wouldn’t be any more or less incriminating than the pair of abandoned bikes at the abduction site), or (2) the BG may have been focused on Lyric and may not have known that Elizabeth had a cell phone in her purse, regardless of whether it was fully functioning or not, and/or may have ditched Elizabeth’s purse without much consideration.

    Ugh.

Can we classify Dan’s comments as an earlier disappearance over the weekend? I watched them about 20 times earlier.

    B

  18. BlackPearl says:

Can I say… meth!?!?! Are you f*ing kidding me? Dad’s current charges relate to allegations that he had materials to make meth in his home. While the kids were or were not living there?? And Misty “plead guilty to conspiracy to manufacture and distribute meth in 2003″! This isn’t anything new.

As I’ve said before, I’m inclined to think this was a “stranger” abduction and that there may have been grooming resulting in multiple episodes of contact. But (and I hate to say this because I hate “conspiracy-theory” ideas) the day before the girls went missing, the court set Dan’s court date for the current drug charges for September. Also, one of Dan’s alleged accomplices in the drug case had a pretrial conference the day of the girls’ disappearance. I’m sure police have looked into this person. But I wonder what time of day the pretrial hearing was held– was it prior to the abduction? How does Dan intend to plea– could the accomplice whose hearing was on the day of the disappearance have learned that Dan was planning on testifying against him or someone else in exchange for a lesser sentence? *If* this was the case, could this information have spurred someone to abduct the girls to send a message to Dan to keep his mouth shut? Even if he wasn’t cooperating with police, someone could still wish to communicate to Dan to keep in line and keep his mouth shut.

  19. Jnpgh says:

I know that the favorite line is that “everyone deals with grief differently” …. but EGAD her child is missing!! No sound or sight of her, and Lyric’s mother is quite calm, cool and collected when being interviewed! This is just plan WRONG!

Yes, Ed Smart and Mark Klaas tried to remain as calms as possible, but you could clearly tell when they spoke to the media that they were just being torn apart by their dauaghters’ disappearance (and yes – in both cases, an abduction).

I just have a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that this is not going to have a happy ending.

After all the people we’ve seen who have this calm, “different way of grieving” ….(and that includes Scott Peterson, the C-word, and Misty Croslin) ….I do NOT believe it!

    I agree, something smells.

  21. BlackPearl says:

@ Word Girl, July 17, 2012 at 5:21 pm (and Blink who said “Its a trap how?”)

Looking at the area aerially using Google, I don’t think Dan meant anything about the location being a trap as it could relate to fleeing from LE. I am inclined to think that Dan meant that the specific place on the trail where the bikes were found was a “trap” in that it is a section of the trail that has fences on both sides of the path. Other parts of the trail are either free of fences on both sides, have a fence on only one side of the trail, or if there are fences on both sides of the trail at least one fence is further from the immediate sides of the path (this is the case only a few meters west of where the bikes were found). This makes me see the area of the trail where the bikes were found as a funnel or chute, with no wiggle room on either side of the path. Anywhere else on the trail, the girls could have potentially ridden their bikes off the path and around/away from someone they were trying to avoid. Anywhere else, they might have been able to run around/away from someone they wanted to avoid. Because the area is so narrow it would be harder/impossible to turn your bike around quickly in an emergency, let alone two bikes simultaneously. Additionally, I imagine that the area was so narrow that even if the person the girls encountered there didn’t initially appear threatening– say he was leaning against the fence or bent over tying his shoe– he could probably very easily grab at least one of the girls as they rode past because the area was so narrow. Finally, if he was able to grab one of the girls when he encountered them or as they passed, I would think that the other girl would not want to leave the scene/leave her cousin and would eventually cooperate with the bad guy. :(

  22. BlackPearl says:

Referencing the Google map created to map points of interest in the case, does anyone know whether the “unlocked gate to rock jetty” was normally unlocked? If not, was the lock busted/broken? If the gate was usually locked, who had keys to unlock it and for what purpose would the gates have been opened? Is there any way to track the movements and actions of individuals with keys to the lock to determine who may have been the last one there and left it unlocked– if it was unlocked as opposed to broken open.

What was the purpose of the rock jetty? Can a local say whether the jetty was constructed in such a way that it could serve as an impromtu boat “dock” where someone could get out of/into a boat?

Also, can anyone expand upon the “unusual tire tracks found by Ollipop,” a new(er) addition to the Google map?

I bought her a helmet at goodwill the other day and when she rang my doorbell, I told her that when she rides with me and my kids, she must wear it. She has young parents and they all live with grandma and grandpa. She is desperate for attention and would be an abductor’s perfect subject. These two girls are so cute – as were countless others. They seem to have noone who can do a thing to protect or save them. It is truly heartbreaking.

I believe strongly their is no such thing as a perfect parent. I know, because I am not one.

However, I also believe that the safety and security of children should be paramount and if that is compromised by a parent, alternative arrangements for the child to get what they need for the time they need it are in order.

Before slamming the child rearing too much, remember that Heather and Drew stepped up to care for Lyric from 2003-2007, while Misty was in prison. Possibly also while she was sent back for 5 months on her parole revoke. That can’t have been easy while they were working and raising their own children.

In regard to your comment that you don’t think that is Lyric’s facebbok page, it appears to me that it is her fb page. The picture she has posted is a picture of Selena Gomez who is a young famous singer/actor. Younger kid’s often post pictures of famous people they like instead of posting their own picture, which in my opinion is a great idea if a child that age is going to have a page, especially with all the freaks out there.

In addition to her having Dan as a friend, Misty is one of her friends as well and neither Dan or Misty have an info listed about their missing daughter. It’s really sad to me considering I went crazy posting info about my nephew’s missing dog on fb (which thank the God Lord above we found her). I swear, if I see Misty smiling like a chesire cat as she speaks of her MISSING DAUGHTER one more time, I’m going to kick my TV screen across the room. Don’t tell me she’s just “nervous.” Her daughter is missing and God knows where she is and how she got there. I don’t know how I would react if it was me or anyone I know, but I can tell you one thing: you would not see me or anyone I know even CRACK a smile. If you mute the sound, it looks like she’s talking about new fall fashions or a sale on bananas…la deee da. She’s making it very hard for anyone to empathize with her. Especially as more and more of her criminal past is revealed. No, I don’t think Misty is involved necessarily, but for crying out loud – she does not give the appearance of a mother who’s daughter could be out there killed somewhere. The public doesn’t need hysterics…but people like to feel connected to spur them into action…to keep looking…to help…I see Kyron’s biomom and I just feel so horrible for her. But I feel no connection with Misty whatsoever. In fact, I find her on-camera-persona irritating.

Blink I think the reason so many people post the same comments, isn’t that they aren’t reading other posts. I think they are reading up to the point all comments were last posted. Then people respond without knowing what other people are writing.. All new comments sit in moderation together and suddenly, they all pop up saying the same thing. Just MO :)

    Really good point. My bad.

Talk amongst yourselves, lol. ( say like the verklempt lady on SNL- coffee talk)

    Thanks for everyone’s patience.

I haven’t see this posted yet. Below link says that DM’s September court date was set the day before the girls went missing. How often does this happen…a court date gets set and someone goes missing or is killed?

Ok, the last link I posted states that Misty and Dan don’t have a lawyer and don’t plan on getting one. This states they have consulted an attorney and ‘may’ not be cooperating 100% with LE
