Missing Iowa Girls Lyric and Elizabeth: New Evidence Found, Lake Cleared, Dad Dan Morrissey Is Suspect. Is A Jailbreak Connected?

Evansdale, Iowa-  Lyric Morrissey and Elizabeth Collins have been missing from what their Grandmother Wylma Cook described as “within her view from the home” for over one week.  Myers Lake, approximately a 27 acre body of water surrounded by a Nature bike trail which yielded the tweens bikes and purse, has been cleared after consultation with the Elite FBI CSI dive team.

On July 12th, the day before the girls disappeared,  Daniel Morrissey was due to enter a guilty plea in a pending Federal drug arrest.  Instead, he requested the matter be scheduled/reset for trial.  In response,  prosecutors swiftly requested the court place Morrissey under appropriate pre-trial supervision for his alleged crimes.

On Thursday, prosecutors with the Black Hawk County Attorney’s Office asked a judge to review Morrissey’s release, pointing out that Iowa Code state people charged with conspiracy to manufacture meth being a second offender — one of the charges Morrissey is facing — shall be under supervision as a condition of their release.

Occurring almost simultaneously to Morrissey’s plea filing which he did not attend personally, a Black Hawk county prisoner broke out of jail, robbed a pharmacy and was on the lam for over 18 hours.

Jeremy Alan Mask, fond of controlled substances which led to his arrests is now in custody and additional charges related to the escape were filed against Mask the following day.  Mask was sentenced to a residential treatment center following a burglary of a Walgreens last April.

Are the incidents connected?  Investigators are not talking.  Except to say they now have video footage of the girls at about the time they were both seen.  No mention as to whether or not the girls were on their bikes.

Investigators may be tight lipped- But they ARE acting.

Yesterday  Black Hawk County detectives revised a no contact order barring Dan Morrissey from being near his wife Misty- although they have appeared together and have been living together for weeks- following a domestic violence assault which landed both Dan and Misty back in prison last August.

As reported exclusively last week on www.blinkoncrime.com, Dan Morrissey for the assault and Misty Cook-Morrissey for extensive probation/parole violations.

The pair are now permitted to be in each other’s company, provided LE agents are as well.

Misty Cook Morrissey’s sister Tammy Brossueau has confirmed that detectives have directly confronted Dan Morrissey with information they developed pointing to him as a suspect and as a result the estranged couple have refused to cooperate further in the investigation to locate their daughter and her cousin Elizabeth.

Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office Captain Rick Abben officially declared the case an abduction at a 4 PM press conference yesterday afternoon.

Abben also announced a $50,000 reward is being offered leading to the person or persons responsible for the disappearance of the girls.  He confirmed  said evidence has been seized in the investigation and sent to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation crime lab in Des Moines.    While he would not comment on the evidence specifically, sources inside the investigation speaking on the condition of anonymity to www.blinkoncrime.com have confirmed that items from the home including a computer and other electronic devices are among the listed property inventory.

Why would you remove my comment and link to the police & court paperwork that clearly showed what the situation with the father’s court proceedings, and then choose to twist or misstate it for your article?

It was there, pending moderation, complete with cited link, pointing out that pretrial supervision was already occurring prior to the girls’ disappearance, and that the sole change made was the conditional lift of the no-contact between Lyric’s parents.

And as soon as your article posted, it was no longer pending, nor posted – it was gone.

But don’t worry. I’m not interested in fighting with you about it. It isn’t worth wasting my time on.

I can think for myself, and there’s just been too many glaring mistakes left uncorrected and unacknowledged in these posts. Why would you spread disinformation rather than the truth? How does that help get those girls home?

Jade- I removed nothing from you. Everything you have ever posted is viewable. If you post something and it does not say awaiting moderation it did not submit for some reason. If you posted active session linkage, on occasion that will time out on your end and will not post. Did you check the previous article?

If you feel their are errors, you are always welcome to point them out specifically.

BOTH of these individuals have extensive criminal records, both State (2 states for Misty) and Federal, it was not my intention to post that very long individual criminal history nor have I seen anyone else .

The focus is and should be on directed efforts to link a motive and possible suspect to locate these little ladies, period. I have not posted a fraction of what I know, but let me say that Misty’s prior associations were not cooking meth in anyone’s basement.

Not to sound haughty, but I broke the criminal background of Dan Morrissey as a possible angle in the first place. I did so because due to my training and experience. I was that sure it was a factor.

  3. she picked morrissey to sit in on her next polygraph?? would they allow that.. i do not know the rules about posting other websites here.. but i read on another website.. she picked morrissey to be the family member that went with her when she goes for the newer polygraph.. ?? surely they (FBI) (law inforcement) will not allow that. if two people are wanted for questioning for a crime surely they dont let each other sit in on each others polygraph test?? how counterproductive is that??? and worse her for thinking they would grant it… She is crazy to think they would let him go in with her??? Surely she isnt that stupid… I mean smart to think to pick him, but stupid to think it would actually be granted. Crazy crazy thinking…what in the world?? LOL ..( i dont mean to laugh, but my gosh some of these cases and the key players that cause it all to go down) i shake my head, they are really not that smart are they??

  4. i dont wanna sound inflamitory, but is this mother that is taking the polygraph test really in it to clear her name (seriously)(hunie it isnt to just clear your name)(it isnt about you and your name or reputation, we do not give a S**T about that)( i can assure you, it isnt about you…Indirectly maybe, but our main focus to get you under a poly is to see how invasive or credible you really are) or put the focus on what she knows so they can get down to who took these kids!!…i gathered from her FB and her comments, she is worried about something…what is that something? SOMEBODY NEEDS TO COME CLEAN!

  5. twinkletoes says:

Yes, Misty seems really, really fried. I don’t think she has enough brain cells left to pull off something calculated in the children’s disappearances. However, I agree Blink, that the background of these two could be related and likely is related, even if it just put the perp in contact with Misty and Dan. I don’t understand why the cops would think the girls are alive unless they have discovered a “plan” of some sort on Misty or Dan’s phones/computers. But even so, why take Elizabeth then? I am leaning toward retaliation or random. Does LE have evidence the girls are alive or does LE have no evidence they are dead?

In my experience with the FBI in abduction cases to make the statement they did, they have evidence the girls are alive.

God only knows what these poor little girls could be enduring and yet her prayer focus is for the parents. (And yes, the parents need our prayers too, but the focus needs to be on the girls.)

I am not sure if anyone has brought this up but could it be possible that these girls were transported via boat? Maybe you guys can help with the logistics of the lake. Would that even be a possibility? Maybe even transported from one end of the lake to another? But, I would assume the dogs would pick up on the scent assuming they searched the entire lake and edges.

Someone posted this beautiful youtube link (below) on her facebook page, to which she didn’t even reply or “like”. I cried watching it. All Misty’s posts are about God and quotes from the bible. None are asking for people to pray for her daughter.. Very little interaction from others on her page either. Obviously, she has access to a computer due to her lasted post about needing to re-take a poly. I am screaming inside with anger toward this woman!

  13. Ode says:

First of all I surely hope they have checked on Paddle Boats or Peddle Boats recently up for sale in the area. I looked and saw a few in Iowa in the last month. There may have been one in Waterloo on Craigslist that was removed so not sure how recent. There may be owners of a few along the bank of the lake but I am sure LE has followed up on that. There is speculation that the girls may have had backpacks on in the grainy video released. If that is so could they have been running away? I ran away once when I was 9 or 10 due to problems at home. I stopped at a friend’s house on the way and she made me several bologna and mustard sandwiches for the road. After I left she told her Dad and he came and found me and took me home. I truly thought I could do it because I was a kid that did not think even 10 minutes ahead. I am so wondering if someone decided to help Lyric run away. The first incident that we heard about, Lyric and another cousin not coming home from the park on time to the point that Grandma and Misty called police. The girls miraculously appear when the police arrived. Was a predator detoured by the appearance of the police? That incident is way to co-inky and add to it the story that Lyric admitted to Grandma that she was going to run away recently because of troubles with Dad. 3 incidents all involving Lyric. Lyric has the parents that are under scrutiny. Was Lyric some sickos target. All this makes me wonder if LE, FBI are aware of a similar scenerio and are appealing to abductor that they believe he did not kill the girls? Someone was just trying to help?

Has anyone heard or read that Lyric was a witness regarding her father’s drug use? Thank you.

Meth is a very bad drug. One’s behavior is altered and it will produce anger. My friend of forty years and whom is now the DA of Harris county Texas told me a story of an encounter she had as a young police officer with a meth head. She got the crap beat out of her and it took six big male police officers to control a little 100 lb. woman.

I am considering the possibility that someone in the family that lives out of state made the abduction of the girls in order to keep the father out of the rehab program. This whole thing is tied in to a family that has drug problems. This happens more than one realizes. Drug families will do whatever it takes to keep doing drugs.

I find it very interesting that the dad suddenly withdraws a planned guilty plea (probably a plea bargain) and choses to go to trial. The feds rarely lose a case and this would seem to increase his possible jail time.

I wonder if his plea deal may have required him to testify against a third party. Could the kids have been taken to force him to alter his testimony? Or did his withdrawal of his guilty plea and request for a trial upset someone who doesn’t want this to go to trial?

The fact that the kids disappeared the day after he withdraw from his apparent plea deal suggests to me that he was to be the “fall guy” and suddenly backed out, angering someone who seeks to ensure his silence.

9 and 11 yrs old. How would they even think of doing this? Shouldn’t they be playing with Barbie dolls? WTF?

  22. Word Girl says:

Bj, I understand that children at 9 and 11 seem young. Many kids at that age have tried cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs.
I’ll try to find some stats on this. It’s not easy being a kid or a parent.

  23. mas says:

As of now just a rumor (since I can not confirm) but on a couple anti-child abuse forums there have been comments that on a darknet site that at least one of the missing girls were found on there within the past week and it was reported to FBI and has now been removed.

So, “if true”, that would be evidence that the girls may still be alive.

  24. BlackPearl says:

I am on board with those thinking that Misty and Dan are somehow involved in the abduction with the motivation of hoping that it will influence sentencing or the outcome of any upcoming criminal trials. The withdrawal of the guilty plea and desire to take the case to trial supports this idea imo.

I’ve seen “plea deal” mentioned in other posts. Was Dan’s guilty plea part of a plea deal? I thought he had just planned on pleaing guilty as part of the standard approach of “pleaing guilty to get slightly less time”?

That aside, I’m leaning towards the idea that the girls were not abducted by a third party to be used as leverage to influence Dan’s potentially incriminating testimony. If the girls are being used as collateral, I would think that LE might not be quite so certain that the girls are alive and/or that Misty might not be quite so cheerful… because if someone is using the girls’ lives as leverage, their lives would be in a very precarious, unpredictable, even unknown state.

But bottom line: If someone were willing to kidnap and threaten to kill two kids in an effort to influence Dan’s testimony, then wouldn’t it be much more effective and less attention-getting to kill Dan himself? It’s terrible to say, but I imagine that the murder of a meth producer/distributor/user would attract a lot less attention from the community (and nation!) than the abduction of two innocent children. So why would the proverbial third party assume that additional risk?

Loss of income, loss of product, fear of prosecution to name a few. The thing is, Misty was involved in a more sophisticated operation than Dan was a few years back.

They stated she kept asking for thier flip-flops ands other items and just wouldn’t leave until they finally gave her something. She was babbling on about knowing what happened and who was invloved. My son relayed this information to me after these girls told him what happened. Sounds like a drug debt had something to do with this whole ordeal. Truth will be coming out here soon if this woman is questioned.”

The video also matches the police timeline. Investigators say the girls left the home to ride their bikes shortly after noon July 13. The camera’s clock shows it was 12:11 p.m. when they rode by.
Both of their bicycles were recovered on a trial near the lake about four hours after they were reported missing, after they left for a neighborhood bike ride and haven’t been seen since.

“David Finkelhor, director of the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire, said that claim means investigators could “have something quite important” for evidence.

He said cases of two children being abducted by a stranger were rare since it would be hard for one person to control both, which makes the common motive of sexual gratification less likely in this case.

Child abductions are the rarest form of child disappearances, according to state data.”

This is a very interesting article. Gives a lot of statistics about missing children. 2011 – 4,593 children reported missing – 99.2 percent were runaways. Less than half percent of cases (18) are considered abductions or kidnappings. All 18 were solved. Three cases of juvenile cases of missing persons are still on the books, one in 1982 and another in 1984. Lots more info at this link.

Word Girl thanks for the link to subpoena. It states the crime was on or about 7-13-12 so I quess it could include what ever Mr. Mask did that Friday before he was captured and maybe what happened on Thursday as well. The interview they are looking for was done on either July 19th or 20th.

  47. sw says:

Regarding the subpoena to KWWL – local rumor is that she referred to Lyric in the past tense during the interview.
