Missing NC Woman Holly Fischer ( UPDATE BODY FOUND): Pending Divorce From Ali Girit Upset Her- Tennesse Police Ask For Public Help

Holly Christine Fischer, 39, has been missing since Monday May 27th.  (UPDATE: THE BODY OF HOLLY FISCHER HAS BEEN LOCATED NEAR HER CAR, WHICH WENT OVER A CLIFF OFF OF 16 IN NC)

Courtesy Holly Fischer

She has not been seen nor heard from since leaving her parents’ home in Knoxville, TN according to a missing persons report filed by her Father Ted.

Ted Fischer described his daughter as “upset” when she left the home Memorial Day- over her pending divorce from estranged husband Ali Ozan Girit. Fischer states that he spoke to Girit and inquired as to his daughter’s whereabouts but Girit proclaimed he has not seen Holly since she left Tennessee.

Holly Fischer, a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Parsons School of Design was a regional sales manager for Discovery Communications through last year.

She has worked in the fashion and design industry for brands like Club Monaco and DKNY.

Girit, a competitive bodybuilder and training manger of LA Fitness according to his linked in profile, signed over a deed to the couples Huntersville home in January of this year. Girit is a former resident of Weehawken, NJ and worked security in New York City in 2009.

Holly Fischer left her parents’ home in Knox County on Monday May 27th and friend Liz Stafford Ajello called the Fischer’s when Holly had not arrived by Wednesday. Ms. Ajello went as far as to suggest foul play is involved in Holly’s disappearance.   Police are focusing their efforts on the area approximately 100 miles  away based on pings from Fischers phone in Ashe and Wilkes counties.

Coward said Fischer’s father told authorities his daughter was upset about her upcoming divorce.

“Her parents seem to think she might have decided to go to Ashe County, to collect herself,” said Liz Stafford, who said she has been a friend of Fischer’s for more than 20 years, dating back to their days as students at Charlotte Latin School.

This is why I have instructed both my daughters and their friends to make regular phone calls or texts when they are traveling alone… where are you going? When do you expect to arrive? What route are you taking? Call me or someone when you get out of the car to use the rest room, call me when you are back on the road again. My heart goes out to the families of the missing women…. such agony.

    How upsetting.
It is difficult for those looking to know what they have before them. Is it a situation where a young woman has had this misfortune of an accident while traveling and gone off the man road, met up with a stranger, needed time away or a more personal issue at hand? Multiple potential issues are possibilities before LE. I see there have been some searches conducted- that is good. Hopefully they will come across her quickly and she is just a bit off road and will be returned home safely. Thanks.

The estranged husband hadn’t seen Holly since she left for Tennessee or left Tennessee? Sorry, I’m confused. Were Holly and Ali together at any time over the holiday? Also, where does Mr. G now reside and work? I don’t know what has happened to Ms. Fischer but having been missing this long is not good. My prayers for her, her family and friends.

unclear Jane- I quoted on that issue- I agree if that quote is correct it seems like an odd reference.

seems the friend says her husband wanted her to hand the car over? That bit of info might be shedding another light on things. I wonder if anyone has spoken to him?

Thanks for posting that Eloise. BOC attempted to, he did not respond.

It sounds as though the friends could shed a lot more light on this relationship. It’s been nearly a week since Holly was last seen. You would think they would have talked with her friends/roommate by now.

It is my understanding the friends are or were having a tough time being taken seriously, and in some cases, even getting through to LE.

re “Ted Fischer described his daughter as “upset” when she left the home Memorial Day- over her pending divorce”
Was she upset only with the fact of divorce or anger at ex over unresolved issues like the car, or had she also argued with her parents over the holiday? Someone can leave their parents’ home upset for more than one reason. Had they had an argument?’

My best info is that she received a text from Girit demanding she return to turn over her vehicle. According to her friends she seemed to be coping well overall, although I can tell you from my review of both parties social sites it appears the divorce was precipitated by the very timeless tradition for some of newer model trade-in.

That said, the last bodybuilder I dated was over 20 years ago and I dumped him because he told me I was gaining weight over what I was when I met him – I was 5’6 1/2″ and 120 lbs, size 4-6. Hello? So I may be jaded, lol.

  7. GraceintheHills says:

Her soon to be ex-husband texted her to return home “effective immediately?” Sounds like this was not an amicable divorce.

Correct Grace. I am not understanding the reason for her to have to turn over a vehicle that was only in her name but it may have been relevant to some sort of property settlement? Also, typically that sort of issue would be handled via counsel and not directly to the parties.

    B

  8. Rose says:

Well, either she did as requested & arrived to turn in car & an untiward argument resulted in death, or she was abducted en route. The former is the simpler more likely suggestion. Altho I don’t get why he’d dump the car-prize while dumping the body in the mtns, unless blood or other forensic evidence was in it (was scene of argument).

Le may not have a ping study back yet, and in that terrain I am just not sure what good it will do unless she has some apps on her phone that can be accessed.

O/T but is it common to have detached garages? Is the pool for the development? Couldn’t see it on google.

Not sure, but not currently listed. I do not know the RE in that area well per se, but in general, newer properties do not have detached garages .

BLINK–any concern vis a vis Morgan Harrington?

I am not sure I understand your question WG. Do you mean am I concerned that an opportunistic serial rapist/offender came upon Holly Fischer?

If so, yes, that is always a concern until it can be excluded, but this would definitely not be Sketch’s mo.

The reality is this. 9 times out of 10 where there is a disappearance of a spouse in the midst of a civil case ( divorce) it concludes to be a domestic situation of some variety. Those permutations are well known to you and the other good contributors here so I will spare you those possibilities.

What I am seeing on the surface appears to be a disjointed LE effort of a missing woman. It does not inspire confidence when time is of the essence. If I were Holly’s parents I would immediately hire a highly regarded/referenced PI with licensing reciprocity between the states.

This pains me greatly. There are certain immediate information markers in a mp case that do not seem to be employed here.

  15. mosaic says:

The WBTV link states that her last known location by cell phone was in Ashe County but that is misleading. Isn’t it possible that her phone could have purposefully been activated there to lead police away from her true location?

One can assume that her friends and family tried to call her on her cell but that she did not respond.

My first thought when I heard about this missing woman is that her car had run off the road. She was upset and distracted. That’s happened several times recently in our area and the victim in each accident was presumed missing. With time the cars are discovered.

But this phone pinging in Ashe County is odd. That area of NC would have required her to head in the opposite direction of Charlotte once she reached Asheville (presuming she got that far on I-40).

I would like to hear more from her friends.

  16. Eloise says:

New info on the phone pings.

New information via press conference.. We believe holly was headed back to Charlotte on 77 and headed north then to 421.. They pinged her at the McDonald’s at 421… In north wilksboro.. From there it appears she headed to the parkway where her phone was last pinged.. Some people are meeting at that McDonalds at 9:30.

Mistake on color of SUV please update
Please view the photo attached! I would like to reiterate and confirm that this is the actual color and make of Holly Fischers Infinity FX35 SUV. The exterior color is a Dark Gray, the interior color is black. The drivers side mirror has a scratch on it as well as the front left fender.

    Again I repeat:
    2004 Infinity FX35
    Exterior: Dark Gray
    Interior: Black Leather
    NC License Plate: XYH6678
    VIN Number: JNRAS08W64X203396
Markings: Drivers side mirror has scratches on it, Front left fender also has a scratch down it.

LL- I updated the color in my piece. May I make a suggestion? If there is a BOLO for the vehicle within the auto body community or salvage yards, etc, LE needs to update the exact color. The exact color is Beryllium 16. Yes, it appears dark gray, but in the potential for chop shop world that piece of info is very important. Please let us know if there is anything else I can do.

i’m concerned with TBI’s ability to properly handle cases. between this and holly bobo, megan sharpton, i have concerns…they also aren’t very savvy at getting information out to the public that would be useful

TBI was flat out uncooperative in Sharpton, although I doubt the agency that handled her case would say that publicly- they do have to work with these guys on a consistent basis. We have all read the current environment in Bobo- The State Police model in most states is very different and unfortunately for the most part they are lackluster in communications to public and more so with family victims. I don’t know that they are involved yet with Holly’s case officially but the thought does not give me relief.

If I may- I am aware of a strong exception to that which I wish to commend. The Maryland State Police. They took over the Christine Sheddy case once we learned of some “cough” egregious errors on behalf of local police and if they had not taken her case seriously and coordinated out of state activity with the evidence in mind, I believe her case prosecutions might still be pending.

Is the spouse a foreign national? The use of improper english in quoted post indicates this. If he is muslim, she may be in big trouble. He could harm her for trying to get a divorce.

ATG, I hope you do not mind, I edited your last line to keep the dialogue focused. I agree Holly’s parents should waste no time whatsoever. I also have concerns that LE who is not in jurisdiction in this case is allowing public searches in a state park.

I hope that means they have developed intel pointing in a location they are investigating themselves. I don’t like the feeling that friends and loved ones are off based on the very limited info developed. There is no ping study ( a true study) released.

This looks more to me like a planted cell phone than anything, but one cant be sure when the ping study has not been released which would indicate when the phone was powered off in those intervals.

I feel Holly has met with foul play, and this lovely lady needs for her disappearance to be taken seriously by LE.

That was a little off the subject. After 450 miles of highway, I probably should not have written those words. You may edit anything I write.

I agree about the foul play. Then we have the Holly Bobo case where the police simply dropped out and nothing was really accomplished.

  28. GeorgiaDad says:

Statistically, we have a good idea of what happened, but we should not jump to conclusions. There was a case covered a few years ago covered by Blink where a child went missing, the parents “failed” a lie detector test and were widely criticized in the press until the real abductor was found and the parents exonerated..

    Several things stand out.
    1) Knoxville to Charlotte is a long drive. Most of the women I know can’t drive more than 20-30 minutes without making or receiving a cell call. Maybe HF is a responsible driver and does use her cell phone while driving.. But it seems to me a woman under this much stress would call a friend or two.
    2) If she were going to turn over her car (I suspect she got the house he got the car), wouldn’t she first need to make some transportation arrangements such as a rental car or a borrowed car?
    3) Her husbands ethnicity – if he is from Istanbul, he would likely be muslim, but Istanbul is a westernized city and he would more likely have more westernized views (radical islam is not prevalent in Istanbul.
    4) We cannot completely exclude the possibility of self harm. This is apparently a very stressful divorce, and this latest event may have set her over the edge. The path she took is unusual (I-40 to I-77 then heading back westward towards the Blue Ridge Parkway). If the Parkway were her destination she could easily have gotten on it in Asheville. I suspect she had a specific destination in mind. I hope she has disappeared into the mountains to clear her head, but I doubt she has adequate provisions, unless she has an unknown friend with a cabin and she has gone off-grid for a few days.
    5) I don’t see an abduction while driving down the interstate (I doubt she picks up hitch-hikers). If she were to meet her husband in some strange location, there should be phone calls, texts, or e-mails.

I suspect she went wherever she went of her own accord, and hope she has not done anything irreversible.

I am aware of a case (name escapes me) where the family contacted me for assisstance of a missing woman. Her husband was an egregious cad who dumped her for his secretary and tried to have her committed to take control of their finances and home. She went missing after dropping off their young children and was missing a for a few weeks. I agreed to take a quick look, but I could not exclude that she may have been run off the road or involved in an accident based on the route she was driving. Turns out she did accidentally run off the road and was killed in the accident. It can happen. I am hearing they may have found her car.

  33. Jane says:

I would imagine her phone would be recovered as well? LE should gather a better picture/timeline from that. Also, was this area searched last week? My prayers for the family and friends of Holly Fischer.

  34. Sunshine says:

I’m also wondering if this was an accident or suicide. Good job on the forensics. You’re fortunate to have him around, esp since youse in da bizz.

It looked like the case was a bit hard to prove, nonetheless. Or was it just the sentencing that stunk up your county? 5-10 years? Five and eligible for parole? That is truly frightening.

Actually it was Michelle that told Nyce she was being stalked rather than admit the affair, and accompanied him to the fBI interview- it was an incredibly bad scene I learned after the fact.

To your point, yes. Incredibly hard to prove past tampering with evidence. Truth is, and nobody will admit this, lol, but had Nyce not moved the seat back all the way in the land cruiser I don’t think the investigation would have had much traction unfortunately.

I watched this last night. What did the investigators make of the footprints leading away from the vehicle? A passenger who survived and simply didn’t want to get involved?

    0/t:
Excellent question Inda. Michelle’s truck was found by some PSEG workers so they were in a position to eliminate footprints which was not super difficult because Nyce is over 6 ft 4 and iirc has over a 13 shoe. HOWEVER, as you know, this evidence is highly circumstantial and was the basis for further warrants so they really had to “prove” they were his. I know folks like to think this sort of thing is the next CSI episode, but had Nyce shut his mouth and hired an attorney immediately, I really doubt he would ever have been prosecuted at all.

Watched the video above; it was gutwrenching. The situation here is moving from puzzling and troubling to bizarre. I’m withholding other opinion until we hear something from the autopsy. Hope they can determine when the accident occurred. I feel for the family… deeply.

  39. Jane says:

So, Blink, do you think there will be an investigation because of the surrounding circumstances or will Holly’s death just be classified a car accident? I’m still curious about her cell phone and her last communication(s). You said you’re “praying for a complete and thorough investigation”. Do you know more than has been mentioned?

I do. For Holly’s vehicle to have run off that cliff in the small opening in between guardrails with no attempts to overcorrect steering or break marks give me great pause. I am not aware of many folks that fill the car up with gas, eat MacDonald’s and then without a word to anyone end their lives in that manner. That said, it is possible.

    B

  40. GeorgiaDad says:

I wonder if she had a will. If not, and the divorce has not been finalized, the house will now go to her husband. I don’t know if there is actually any equity in the house. It wouldn’t surprise me if she had no will, or hadn’t updated it during the divorce process.

From the one accident scene picture I have seen there is a narrow gap between the guardrail and a telephone pole, so I agree this was not an accident. Many single vehicle accidents are related to suicide, but the McDonald’s stop bothers me, although it’s possible she just stopped to use the bathroom..

As for alternate hypotheses, if this was a staged accident, the autopsy would likely show some evidence of drugs or penetrating trauma or strangulation. Her ping record would be helpful. If she drove straight from her parent’s home to the wreck scene with only brief stops then suicide is most likely. The ping record should also document when her phone arrived at the scene. The day she disappeared was Memorial Day, I would expect more traffic than usual on this road.

If her husband was involved, there would have to be some communication between the two causing her to divert her itinerary towards her parent’s mountain condo. There would be a definite cyber trail.

I generally discount complicated theories like staging a wreck scene, but after the case a week or so again where the girl died while some guy was trying to fake and abduction and rescue, nothing is off the table.

When I saw the scene, referencing that very narrow ( for the purposes of driving off a cliff intentionally) it reminded me of that commercial where the old lady is yelling “shoot the gap… shoot the gap”. I immitate her in the car with my children on occasion if they are not fused to their ipads.

Unfortunately, in particular asking the autopsy to tell the story is going to very difficult. You saw the shape the car was in, so you can imagine the remains, which were also thrown so subject to animal predation as well. She was in that terrain for a week.

I am with you on discounting theories that seem obtuse, but when their is motive on behalf of someone who literally knew where she was, her routes and the expectation of arrival to exchange the vehicle ( that’s another issue I do not understand- Judge’s frown on ex parte “self help” activity) did he have a buyer, was he entitled to trade in her vehicle with a title transfer and at a Memorial Day car sale?

Plus, it looks like she doubled back. This is now a cyber case to tell us what happened and it there is unsourced burner phone activity inline with her pings ( this is critical- I just worked on a case like this in WA state where LE WAS able to subpoena burner phone activity nearest the homicide thanks to a suspect claiming he was not there). Whatever happened, I truly believe that a proper investigation will at least rule out a suicide if it can, and her parents and friends deserve that. As a parent, I cannot think of a greater grief than to think my child could not come to me in that state for comfort and left the world thinking it was their only choice.

I have seen a few pics of Holly with her Dad, it would surprise me if this family did not believe she killed herself and did not fight for answers.

At the risk of sounding unprofessional, I would file interpleadings up the wazoo as her parents claiming standing to her estate and hold the thing up in probate for years if there was any doubts.

People just spent the entire weekend with her, this is not the woman who makes a split second decision to take her life in some obscure location with the hope of never being found. Not seeing that.

To be sure, I don’t want to contribute any obtuse theories, especially regarding a deeply personal and tragic loss that on the surface appears to be an accident or a suicide.

Instead I will submit two small observations:

If you go to google maps and look at an aerial view of the road where her car left the embankment, you can see that if a north-traveling car were to miss the curve of the road, the car’s trajectory would take it straight between the guardrail and the pole. You can almost draw a straight line on the map and see how easily a car could run off the road if the driver looks down for just a moment. It makes me wonder why the guardrail was not extended further.

Also, there’s a diamond-shaped yellow DOT sign just before that location that indicates “curves ahead” 35 mph. It’s visible in google maps but may not actually be posted on the road.

And you’re absolutely right Blink, the car is silver in the photos.

Still puzzles me mosaic as I saw a friend of hers actually tell folks not to post posters with the silver image. That is bizarre to me, and as I said, I have access to the same db LE does in terms of bolo- I am the first person to post her VIN in fact, and that data comes up silver, which it was.

Why do we care? I will tell you why. When engaging SAR resources, their is a very good chance of utilizing aerial resources with less info when you have a silver vehicle because it is highly reflective and most vulnerable to aircraft seeing it’s reflective trajectories even if it was in the terrain it was. ( It refracts from the drones or aircrafts). In fact, in some circumstances, certain thermal equip or pos/negat image fitted cameras will pick that up pretty quickly in the ping zone. I have no idea if that area is that sophisticated, but I would like to think they would at least be aware of the advantages and get the car paint right. It is important.

I mean, are we talking witnesses who did not call because they were told it was not silver but sark gray? I dunno.

Even if she did miss the turn, according to the prelim report, she in no way tried to correct or apply brakes.

wow blink, Nyce was your neighbor? my best friend from college lives in that township and told me about this case once… i visit with my kids frequently (I am still practicing dealing with some of the traffic circles, especially the one right off 95) as we have very few in my area in the philly burbs, anyay back on topic…when I saw the “Deadly Affair” episode it really stuck with me. It was actually one of the first things that came to my mind when I read that Holly’s car had been found and was in a single vehicle accident. small world.

he lives in Collegeville now, I did not know him when this happened but we have friends whose children played with his.

my last o/t response to this i promise…collegeville…thank god i live on the complete OTHER end of that county! When I was a child, Craig Rabinowitz killed his wife down the street from my house but that’s the closest I have been to any serious high profile domestic murder..

i hope the police do a very thorough investigation into this case. The more I read, the less I think Holly took her own life. It just doesn’t make sense and I’m not sure it fits the profile of how woman “normally” choose to commit suicide. I also think all of her family support would help, especially if it’s found there were no underlying mental health issues. I just find it very coincidental that she is in a fatal accident on the way to meet with her soon to be ex husband, something stinks here

  44. Jean says:

Just a thought…Is it possible, her husband could have called or texted her after she left her parents home in TN and ask her to meet him at her parents condo. Maybe that’s why she was on that road which seems out of the way, but would be normal is she was going to that condo. Maybe he had someone else go that route to do take care of something for him. Like I said it’s just a thought.

  45. Word Girl says:

Mosaic, hi–I drew the same trajectory, but hit the building (former or still a tavern?) Or if slightly off-center, the car would scrape the building and might not (probably would) go off the cliff.

If there was a car meeting/abduction/murder, I believe two people would need to be involved. One to disable the victim and the other to position the car so it could be run off the mountain.

From: http://www.journalpatriot.com (contains some newer information)

A wrecked car found Sunday off N.C. 16 North, below cliffs near the Ashe County line, has been positively identified as belonging to Holly Fischer, 39, of Charlotte, who was reported missing May 27. Wilkes Sheriff Chris Shew said the vehicle identification number on the 2004 Infiniti FX-35 showed that the car belonged to Ms. Fischer.

Shew said that because it was near the car and other circumstantial evidence, investigators believe the body found when investigators and others reached the scene about 10 a.m. Monday was Ms. Fischer and that she was thrown from the vehicle. Business cards with her name were found there.

A spokesman for the state medical examiner’s office in Chapel Hill, where the decomposed body was taken Monday, said it could be three to four months before an autopsy is completed and results are available. The spokesman said the office doesn’t release preliminary autopsy results.

Shew said there doesn’t appear to be any foul play involved with the death and there is no evidence indicating Ms. Fischer lost control of the car before it plummeted down a steep mountainside with cliffs before stopping 800 to 1,000 feet from N.C. 16.

Later Monday, officials felled a few trees so the car could be pushed on down the slope a short distance to where a logging skidder could reach the car and drag it to a rollback wrecker that hauled it the rest of the way on a rough road cleared by a bulldozer to Timber Ridge Lane and Old N.C. 16. The distance from where the car stopped below N.C. 16 to Timber Ridge Lane was about half a mile.

The car apparently went off the east side of N.C. 16 North where there is a 30-foot-wide opening between the end of a metal guardrail and a light pole about 150 feet north of the former Moonshine Inn tavern and a few hundred feet south of the Jumping Off Place cliffs along N.C. 16.

To have done this, the car had to have gone straight off the road instead of turning left in a curve while being driven northbound up the mountain. An N.C. Highway Patrol spokesman and others at the scene said there was no evidence of the car’s brakes being applied on N.C. 16, an asphalt parking lot or grass before it went down the embankment.

Ms. Fischer was last seen by her parents on May 27 in Knoxville, Tenn., where they live, before she left to return to Charlotte. They reported her missing to the Knox County Sheriff’s Department in Tennessee that day when she failed to arrive in Charlotte.

Wilbar Fire Chief Rick Jennings said a man on a motorcycle stopped by the Wilbar Fire Station on N.C. 16 at the bottom of the Blue Ridge escarpment Sunday night and told firefighters that he had found a place where a car apparently went off N.C. 16. The man said he was helping the Fischer family search the area that day.

Wilbar firefighters rappelled down from that point, saw a wrecked silver car, found a grill from an Infiniti and returned without reaching the car. Wilbar Fire Chief Rick Jennings reported this representatives of multiple agencies converged on the scene.

Wilkes Rescue Squad members tried unsuccessfully to rappel to the wrecked car from the point along N.C. 16, leaving shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday.

Earlier searches by personnel from the Wilkes and Ashe sheriff’s departments, Ashe Rescue Squad and Wilbar and Glendale Springs fire departments and others (Wednesday and Thursday) failed to produce signs of Ms. Fischer.

They searched along the Blue Ridge Parkway near N.C. 16 and later in the Darnell Creek Road area off Sheets Gap Road in Wilbar due to signals detected there from Ms. Fischer’s cell phone. At least one law enforcement officer looked where it was later determined Ms. Fisher’s car went off N.C. 16.

A signal from her cell phone was detected in North Wilkesboro, apparently because she was there before going up the mountain on N.C. 16 North. Other signals from her cell phone indicated that she came from Tennessee on Interstate 40 and turned onto Interstate 77, U.S. 421 and N.C. 16. The last time a signal from her cell phone was detected was about 4:15 p.m. Thursday. A cell phone needs to be turned on to emit the signal.

Ms. Fischer’s parents own a condominium at Mountain Aire Golf Course in West Jefferson, but authorities said there was no indication of her going there recently

    1. I hope the parents are requesting a second autopsy or a tandem autopsy with an independent examiner.

    2. There is something wrong with that ping timeline as previously reported.

    3. It is clear and unambiguous to me they are suggesting she started from the parking lot (asphalt) and this was an intentional act on her part.

    4. If there is the potential that this was not an accident, and the family believes that, they need to be very in step with LE.

    This never gets any easier.

  47. A Texas Grandfather says:

There were no skid marks on the highway or the shoulder. That is unusual for an accident in mountainous terrain.

What was the weather like at the time she would have gone over the edge. I have driven the area and it is sometimes very foggy in the early morning or after dark. Thirty-five mph is too fast in dense fog.

I hope I am wrong, but I am getting a feeling that she did not drive that vehicle off the road. The LE agencies need to spend time at the scene to determine what actually happened. To simply declare an accident without determining the how is the lazy way out.
