Holly Bobo Kidnapped And Murdered: Source Says She May Have Been Informant, Alive For Weeks

On February 28, 2014 The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) Director Mark Gwyn announced the search of 29 year old Zachary Rye Adam’s residence in conjunction with the abduction of Holly Lynn Bobo.  Bobo, a 20 year old nursing student, was abducted from her Darden, TN home nearly 3 years earlier.   Gwyn made it clear during that announcement that they expected to find Holly alive at one of the ensuing searches occurring in multiple counties that day.

"This is a very important time in this investigation," Gwyn told reporters today as the TBI and FBI searched property on Adams Lane in northern Decatur County. "We're not going to say or do anything at this point to interfere with this investigation. Hopefully we'll be able to return Holly home safely to her parents. That's our goal.

Five days later, after a Circuit Judge called the 24th Judicial District Grand Jury back into session, it took them less than three hours to return an indictment for especially aggravated kidnapping and first degree murder.

Zachary Rye Adams and Jason Wayne Autry have been indicted for the especially aggravated kidnapping and first degree felony murder in Holly Bobo’s case.  A third suspect, Shayne Kyle Austin was about to be indicted when his criminal defense attorney, Luke Evans, filed a civil suit against the State of Tennessee to enforce an immunity agreement Austin signed.   John Dylan Adams, Zachary’s brother currently incarcerated and awaiting sentencing on Federal weapons charges will be testifying as a witness in this case.  He says Holly was last seen following her abduction- ALIVE.

The “A-Train” as dubbed by locals who knew them based on the initials of their last names and the frequency for which they were seen together were household names to the residents of the tiny community in Decautur County, TN.  They have various criminal histories dating back to their teens.

They’re creepy and their kooky, … altogether spooky.. The Adams Family

The Adams brothers, Zach and ‘Dylan’ as John is referred to, live in multiple houses perched on the land  bearing the family surname which was passed down to them by their grandfather John and Grandmother Becky who died 12 days before Holly’s abduction.   Tim Adam’s, the boys’ father, died of complications from drug use in 2003.

Donna “Karen” Bobo, Holly Bobo’s Mother and elementary school teacher, had young Zach and Dylan in her class.

Zach Adams, in the lead between the two for the size of his rap sheet, has felony convictions for shooting his Mother Cindy at point blank rang with a 9MM handgun, and within 6 months of his release on that charge wielded a shotgun at his grandparents during a drug binge.  In a pre-sentencing report on his current gun charges, Dylan Adams reports he has had alcohol and substance abuse issues with minor burglary charges since he was a teen, and would like to serve his sentence in a minimum Federal prison in Atlanta, GA.

Zach Adams was out on bond or on probation from three separate criminal incidents to involve booze, drugs, assaulting a Natchez Park Ranger when Bobo was abducted from her home.  On April 4th, Adams was arrested in Natchez Park with the assistance of the Henderson County Sheriff's Office along with his passenger, Robert "Shawn" Moody.

From the Jackson Sun:

Zachary Adams was arrested in Natchez Trace State Park on April 4, 2011, following a traffic stop.

Adams and his passenger Robert S. Moody, seemed nervous, the report says. Adams told the ranger he was bringing Moody to look at the damage and that the two men needed to get to the other side of the park.

"...Hill saw a six-pack of beer bottles in the back floorboard, and two of the bottles appeared to be open.
Hill asked Adams to step out of the truck and asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle. Adams said “no,” and gave Hill permission to search the truck.Rangers also found a pill bottle on Moody containing seven different pills, the report said.
Along with resisting arrest and assaulting the officer, Adams was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, drug possession, tampering with evidence, reckless driving and violation of the open container law.

Moody was charged with drug possession..."

Moody is also a convicted felon and was arrested in Florida in 2005 for failing to register as a sex offender for a statutory rape charge he was convicted of in Decatur.

"Shawn" Moody's wife Stormy Winters Moody was convicted of aggravated burglary in 2013 for stealing the contents of her neighbor's home.   Ms. Moody was wearing some of the clothing from her heist when police arrived, while standing in the front yard of her home.

For several locals and this author, Zach Adams, Jason Autry and Shayne Austin were names associated with the investigation within weeks of Holly’s disappearance.  Prior to Adam’s indictment he was arrested on drug possession charges in Benton County at his girlfriend’s home.  On the day his home and property were searched by investigators he was also charged with aggravated assault against the sister of his girlfriend, Amber Bray.  Charges from the incident which occurred February 6th, 2014 included Adams holding a gun to her head and threatening to “gut her” for speaking with police about his possible involvement.

On February 24th, 4 days before the multiple searches conducted on different counties in the Bobo case,   Ms. Bray’s son Christopher and his girlfriend Toni Craig were operating a van that was pulled over in a traffic stop; the van was registered to Ms. Bray.   The Benton County Sherriff’s Office recovered over $60,000 in cultured pearls in several duffel bags from the van and when investigators went to the Bray home to recover the rest- Adams was standing in the front yard with a handful he said he wanted to “turn over”.    He was arrested on a drug possession charge shortly thereafter, posted bond again and released.

In what can only be described as an extremely odd coincidence, the last major theft of pearls or in this case, pearls in shells, involved extended family members and friends of Adams.  Danny Vine and Stella Thornton were brutally murdered in their Camden, Tennessee home on the evening of January 16, 1991.  Danny, an accomplished shell buyer with an assortment of day workers, sold much of his yield to or through the Tennessee Shell Company (TSC).  In 1998 The Tennessee Shell Company agreed to pay a $1,000,000 fine after 18 people were indicted for selling illegally harvested pearls/shells.   While the Tennessee Shell Company no longer has an active business license, members of the Arnold family, associated with the management of TSC are friends of Bray’s.  Two local brother’s, and extended kin, Gerry Lee and Charles Bruce were eventually tried and convicted.

But not before Sheila Kay Bradford, the live-in girlfriend would visit the TBI to turn over information about Bruce after leaving the residence in fear.  She was offered Federal protection but refused when she learned she would have to testify.  Two days later, on September 22, 1992, Bradford’ car was found with the keys in the ignition at a relative’s home.  She has never been seen since and her disappearance has been ruled suspicious.

Kissing  Killing Cousins

Jason Wayne Autry is Holly Bobo’s second cousin.   He has an extensive criminal history which includes, by his own admission, leadership in the Aryan Brotherhood.

He also claims to have converted his past sins and deeds since finding faith after a near fatal infection in prison.   Autry is serving the equivalent of a life sentence in Federal prison.  Indicted on March 28th, Autry, an impeding chum  at 6’ 7” tall, is not likely to be the suspect Holly encountered in her backyard as described by her brother Clint.

Shayne Kyle Austin, whose parent’s property is situated closely to the Bobo property was at one time, close friends with Holly’s Cousin Natalie Bobo.  He also worked for a time for Dana Bobo, Holly’s Father, until he fired him.  It is not known if the incident is related, but this occurs around the time that Natalie’s Father Leonard, and Dana Bobo travel across state lines to bring Natalie home in an effort to intervene and provide an avenue for substance abuse issues she was suffering, as well her choice of activity to fund same.

He has an extensive criminal history and closely resembles a sketch developed by Candace Wood, a friend of Holly’s who attended the Coon hunt with her 4 days before her disappearance of a man who appeared to be fixated on her, and speaking into his phone at the same time.  Austin is approximately 5’10” and wears glasses.

Out of the three suspects to date, he also closely matches the description of the man seen walking into the woods with her, we know now as alleged by the TBI, with a weapon to insure her compliance.   Austin, and Michael Lee Alexander were moved from different county correctional facilities into Decatur jail on March 2, 2014.  Lee lives in the adjacent property to Adam’s on Pughe Rd.

Two days later, on March 4, Zach Alexander “coerces” his brother through one, or both of them.

On March 5th, former Decatur resident and convicted rapist Victor Dinsmore, an associate of all three of the accused claims he passed a polygraph, thus, “clearing his name.”  Sources inside the investigation have confirmed that Dinsmore and his wife Sandy are material witnesses in the case against all three men- but specifically informed investigators that Zach Adams openly bragged about what happened to Holly Bobo while a guest at the Dinsmore residence.

On March 6th, Austin signed an immunity deal a day after Adams indictment.

So- how does a 20 year old nursing student and aspiring singer cross paths with the likes of Adams, Autry and Austin?  The old adage You can’t pick your family may be a factor.

Guilt by Association?

Sources close to the investigation speaking to BOC Editor In Chief, S. Christina Stoy on the condition of anonymity have confirmed her earlier reports that there was a parallel Federal investigation being conducted by the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, FBI and the DEA involving a prescription and illegal drug ring.  A tip from a reader to Ms. Stoy was turned over to the TBI in 2011.  To protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, BOC has redacted case-sensitive details.

Blink
Let me bring you out of the dark.
Holly is alive and safe.
She has been in PC since the night of the 18th
This is all connected to the federal drug investigation involving prescription pain pills.
Holly overheard a conversation at Jackson General and went to authoritiesfederal informant at the time of her abduction. Do you remember the “rumor” about Holly being seen at a drug house in Scotts Hill the weekend prior to her abduction? Not a rumor. She was working with TBI on a sting and wearing a wire. I know this sounds unbelievable but I am coming at you straight up because I respect you and your work on this case. I am not a local but have local kin. If you would like to discuss this more you can email me at  (redacted)

Some things to consider before you discount what Im saying.

-Zach Adams is in federal custody and he is talking. He was arrested a while back and charged with aggravated assualt for beating the piss out of his GF for talking to LE.
-The cousins of Holly that are involved in her abuction are last name (redacted)
-This is also involving fradulent car sales. Burning and turning fake titles, cars coming from KY stolen
-Look into Coy Johnson he was raided recently for drugs (pain pills) and fradulent car sales lives behind Hardee’s. He is connected.
-redacted
-redacted

-The family is being blackmailed with pictures of Holly.
-(redacted) are all peanuts compared to who are involved.
-Please go back over the timeline with at least the assumption she was rescued in Nanchez on the 18th the SAME night Sheriff John Edwards was arrested after the final payment was interceded by TBI.
-It is not a concidence that John Edwards was paid a down payment of 15,000 on the 12th and Holly was abducted on the 13th just like its not a concidence that Edwards was arrested on the 18th and Holly was rescued and the next day the reward was topped off to 85,000 the exact amount left owing Edwards minus the range rover.
-There is a Memphis USM staying at cabin 16.

Consider everything and for what its worth I am dead serious and have the name of who saw her at the cabin. I have the names of who found her (redacted)at Cherokee landing. I even have the burner phone number Holly is in posession of

Jason Autry is protecting Shayne and has threatened to kill quite a few people including his(redacted) The guy that worked at (redacted)is in PC.

The head of this TYPHOEUS has a name.   John Patrick Edwards.

Former Wilson County Detective and member of the Joint Violent Crimes Task Force (JVCTF) and Safe Streets Task Force (SSTF), Edwards was cleaning up the streets of drugs, guns and fake car titles.  In conjunction with the resources of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) in an investigation that began in 2009 and was spread across 3 states, Edwards built his own criminal enterprise to include drug dealers turned informant and informants turning into defendants.   The problem with that was that he was stealing most of it under all of their collective noses, apparently.

It was not until Edwards was arrested for a kerfuffle in March 2011 involving stealing from his girlfriend to gift his wife and vice versa that his colleagues found out what he was up to.

Edwards way out of his boiling pot was to sell the information he learned while heading the task forces, specifically, the names of the Federal Agents and informants to the targets of the criminal investigations.

On April 11, 2011, Rodney Settles, Edward’s business partner with Bidmoor Auctions enters the fray.

Edwards summons Settles and tells him he needs money, $100,000 and a Range Rover to be exact, and he needs it the next day.  He tells him (through Settles) something MAJOR is about to go down in the operation in short order.  He tells them there is a new informant that is unknown to him.

Settles, is named by an cooperating source (CS) and interceded by Agents following a meeting with Edwards, in which Edwards asks him to kill his wife- he refuses, and asks him to approach the “target” of the ongoing investigations to prompt payment to him in exchange for providing the names of the Federal agents he is working with, and more importantly, a “new” informant.

Settles remains in Federal custody (FBI) for most of the evening April 11th but agrees to cooperate, agrees to act as an informant for the JVTF; Edwards had been removed without pay weeks earlier.

On April 12, 2011, the day before Holly Bobo’s abduction,   Edwards gets a $15,000 down payment for his proffer of information.    Intentionally planted to track Edward’s efforts- according to documents obtained in his case, he was told there was a new informant that was not identified.  He did however give up the agents names according to the affidavit, and it should be noted that the only evidence of who he told “what” to, is based on the court transcript.  It is certainly feasible that no target devices were ever presented in court as belonging to Edwards, that he had every opportunity to alert others of similar information.    Edwards headed the task force for Wilson County and Lebanon Police Department for years and he did so in a vacuum; at least that is what the supporting documents would like you to believe.  This sentiment includes Former Wilson County Sheriff Terry Ashe, who retired following the fiasco, but not before blaming the FBI for not minding the store- stating John Edwards acted alone.

According to his audit response by Ashe, as conducted by the State of Tennessee Comptroller’s Director Jim Arnett, excerpted in pertinent part:

It was always my understanding that all officers in the Joint Violent Crimes Task Force (JVCTF) with the Wilson County Sheriff’s Department, the Lebanon Police Department, and the FBI were being supervised by the FBI. This can be supported again by the copies of the MOU and the MOA. This within itself does not excuse the conduct of a former employee who appears to have acted alone in his efforts to discredit himself, but those who worked around him. It appears that his plans were so well designed that not only did the Lebanon Police Department, the Wilson County Sheriff's Department, the FBI, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and our local district attorney general’s office did not recognize this activity even though they worked alongside Deputy Edwards on a day-to-day basis.

The audit,   which contains no vehicle identification numbers, no account numbers, no reference to the fact that Edwards was a partner in an auction house with a revoked license or the status of any other parties who had access to evidence or funds- concludes Edwards acted alone.

What is even more curious, is that the report at no time recognizes that the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is an agency of record in the investigations.    Edwards and the targets of several investigations to include those he stole from, did not prosecute, his informants and business partner were all arrested on April 18, 2011.

Critically import dates here- April 11th, Settles interceded for several hours and Edwards knew.  April 12th, Settles tells (CS-1) names of interest, secures down payment.  April 18th, everyone is arrested.

Within documents of the sworn affidavit by DEA Special Agent Tanya (insert) it is learned that during the course of the investigation that 3 cell phones have NOT received Judicial tap and trace approval and subsequently there is no further mention of those phones or their collected data.   There are nearly 50 pages missing from this filing.

Was Holly, or someone she associated with, the owner of Target cellphones #6, #7 or #9?

Edwards Is currently serving 18 years for obstruction of an official proceeding and Settles is serving  The 21 arrested in the April 18 corral are still pending in Federal Court with all recent docket submissions under seal.  Edwards plead guilty in April 2013 to an additional 10 counts in State Court,  adding 12 years to the Federal sentence.

What appears to be the primary target of the investigation, Zabeesh Syed, a Pakistani national, has been held in isolation since his plea in 2012.    There is approximately $35K still unaccounted for in Wilson County Sheriff’s Dept. and no accounting of the missing evidence, or cross reference of the VIN numbers of the missing cars is available.

Meth-ED

While it is undeniable that the tipster points out the date coincidences in the Wilson County/JVTF and the fact that it correctly names the current suspects, do we assume from that Holly was kept alive and held captive in an effort to thwart someone’s prosecution?

Was Holly Bobo, who attempted to intervene in support of assistance to her cousin Natalie targeted as an informant?   Dylan Adams claims to have those answers- he says he last saw her alive.

Director Gwyn, with knowledge of inside information went on record on February 28th believing Holly Bobo was alive.    However, do his statements before the Senators at the State Capital on the day of Zachary Adam’s arraignment tell a different story, OR, Do they tell the real story of what happened to Holly Bobo?

"I've been battling this meth issue for a long time," Gwyn said.

Gwyn then mentioned a name that those like state Sen. John Stevens, R-Huntingdon, didn't expect to hear: Holly Bobo.

"That was surprising to me that that was brought up, but it's relevant," Stevens said.

It's relevant in this hearing because Gwyn said Bobo's case has to do with meth.

"I worked one of the first methamphetamine-related murders back into the 90s, where a guy kidnapped two young men, tortured them for seven days, killed both of them, threw them off into Center Hill Lake," Gwyn said. "Fast-forward to 2014, and I thought in my career that would be the only time I would ever see anything like that."

"We made an arrest. Lo and behold, the person has several meth-related charges. And the night we arrested him, he was trying to get meth into the jail," Gwyn said.

"At what point do we stop the murders? I don't want to inconvenience anybody. There is no family in this state that deserves to go through what that family went through for the past three years," Gwyn said.  – TBI Director Mark Gwyn

BOC has uncovered the case that Gwyn is referring to – and it is gruesome.   The parallels to Holly’s case, the tipster accuracy, and the unfolding events to date in the arrests of those responsible are explosive.

Excerpted, in pertinent part:

Appellate C ourt Clerk

STATE OF TENNESSEE,               )     No. 03C01-9707-CR-00299

)

Appellee                               )

)     Cumberland County

vs.                                                  )

)     Honorable John Turnbull, Judge

JAMES CHRISTOPHER TATROW, )

)     (Felony Murder, Especially Aggravated

Appellant                              )     Kidnapping)

Phillip Lane Lawrence, James Talbert Hendrixson, Jr., Michael Redmon, Jeffrey Sanders and Kenny Mason were indicted for two counts of premeditated murder, two counts of felony murder, and two counts of especially aggravated kidnapping. Jimmy Anthony Dan was indicted for kidnapping only, and Bruce Edward Rochefort was indicted for kidnapping and aggravated assault.  These men were awaiting trial when Tatrow’s case was tried.

The defense called the other defendants to the stand but each one refused to testify on Fifth Amendment grounds.

The appellate opinion can be read here.  WARNING- IT is graphic and disturbing.  Three years after the murders, Connie Tatrow was indicted and subsequently convicted of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamines.    Another disturbing coincidence to the Bobo case is that in James Tatrow’s initial police interviews, he claimed that the murder victims (insert) had been picked up from the Dry Creek area by someone in a black Camaro.   Shortly after Holly was abducted, pictures surfaced online, by an individual whose residence ended up being searched in the case, Anthony Calabrese of a black Camaro, claiming to have Holly’s flip flops near the door.

With a clear motive from TBI Director Gwyn, which occurs after recorded conversations taking place between alleged suspects in Decatur County jail following which he presumably was briefed and subsequent plea deal for Austin indicating he will provide the location of Holly’s remains the assumption can be drawn that prosecutors and TBI investigators know what happened to Holly Bobo that ultimately ended her life.

The question becomes- Do WE ever really want to know?

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is continuing to interview and investigate possible additional suspects.  The TBI is asking anyone with information to call 1-800 TBI FIND

Can you correct me on what I get out of this? I understand
There is evidence a Sheriff was corrupt wrt stolen cars & drugs
while participating in ongoing DEA/FBI initiatives; moreover, he sold out informants.
Holly may have been a 1 time wired informant whose name the Sheriff provided targets.
The Bobo brothers (Dad level) did an intervention on Natalie & Dad may have fired Austin because he was a bad influence or a supplier.
Austin, Camouflage in Chief, likely followed Holly at coon hunt & later kidnapped her. While his motive could have been lust, he apparently turned her over to others (Adams et al), so acting as a co-conspirator or their agent.

    This is very convoluted.

I chose not to read the entire document. Thank you for the warning.

The key points in your piece, as I interpret it, are drugs, particularly meth, will make a person violent, evil, and out of their mind. It will cause an entire room of users to ignore their conscience and disassociate to the point of remaining silent about evil perpetrated on victims.

Your article further shows us that corruption in LE undeniably exists. Sometimes people who try to help investigations (informants and witnesses) are not safe from officers and investigators.

Sometimes this corruption is so deep that once a fall guy has been selected (John Patrick Edwards) a secondary cover up will ensue to protect any other corrupt actors within the ranks of law enforcement.

This knowledge should be accessible to the public with the understanding that it can happen anywhere in any one of our communities.

Certainly it can be happening in Multnomah County, OR as we speak (with regards to the Kyron Horman investigation), right under the nose of the FBI and DEA just as happened in Wilson County, TN.

God willing Holly Bobo’s parents speak out about this flawed investigation. It always surprises me that parents of the missing aren’t more vocal against what must certainly be obvious signs of misconduct or poor handling of investigations. I suppose they feel they are at the mercy of LE, and they are, which is what keeps them in silence.

God Bless the Bobo family for all the pain they have suffered, especially her dear brother.

  9. first-time says:

OK – I’ve read through this a couple of times…Is it possible that she was alive in that cabin at Natchez and was taken from there still alive by someone connected to Edwards or the JVCTF? I am confused.

I believe that Natchez Trace Park- specifically Trace creek- is a very important location in this case. The search locations match the dates, and Adams was arrested there the week before.

For the sake of argument, if you believe Dir Gwyn gave thought to mentioning the Tratow case in a senate hearing, and I do, I think that is a starting roadmap of sorts. It is a highly violent and symbolic case even though he never referenced by name or details. I find him way more calculating than that. And that is a compliment.

  10. Rose says:

I can see the Bobo lawsuit
if Holly was wired while acting as an agent of LE.
Against gov’t entities (which may be immune) and individuals.
If Sheriff, acting in his official capacity, outed her as an informant.
FBI & DEA failed to exercise reasonable care in supervising Sheriff
over a peroid of time involving many joint transactions.

  11. Rose says:

    Have they found her body?
If not, is that Austin’s immunity deal problem?

There is physical evidence in the case (undisclosed). In Adam’s ammended indictment hearing the Judge ordered the State to turn over as much disclosure as they could in 30 days.

I attached the Austin suit ( dropbox). I hesitate to say this because of the severity of the case and because I think Shayne Austin has a way bigger role in this than portrayed- AND I have professional experience in a case where I have consulted on structuring an agreement (unrelated) with knowledge that the defendant was going to mitigate involvement, and the ability to void same, if that occurred.

That disclosure aside, as I read it, no- simply not finding a “body” is not going to void that agreement. It is pretty broad and reaching, and where Evans may have failed his client in filing the suit to avoid an indictment – is that now that the agreement is public, the other defendants and counsel know what to allege to avoid it.

I wonder who was the smartest, or not so much here- KWIM?

You’re one of only a few doing the work of facing reality head on within our criminal justice system.

I tried, but my googles go to the Other J Edwards.

He was not the sheriff Rose, Terry Ashe was. I could clog this thread with offshoots of additional information that would make one scream, like for instance the audit report for all counties in TN from 2012- which was likely commissioned because of this hot mess, and how much money is missing per county, and how many folks were fired- where insurances repaid a great deal of it, if not the thieves.

  16. Jane says:

I was curious as to whether NB’s continuous downward spiral could have anything to do with anything she could have known prior to Holly’s abduction and since. OMG…do you think the Bobo family was actually believing Gwyn’s comment re Holly alive three years later? Do you think her remains have been/will be found? What exactly does LE have to charge these men with murder other than a witness with a criminal past? Do you think these informants will actually testify? From day one was LE doing anything to save Holly’s life? Sorry, will see if I can find any of these answers next go round. I did a really fast read – shocked to say the least. Blink, what incredible work you continue to do. I also was curious if you ever put the parents of all these young missing/murdered victims in touch with each other? Thank you.

I admit to being somewhat rushed to complete this piece based on some developments in the case that came about as I was requesting quotes- so I want to apologize for not having more time to layout this rather provocative turn in Holly’s case.

I have never found any evidence whatsoever that Holly was ever using drugs- I want to make that clear- I should also point out that those in the nursing program are tested as well.

Yes, I do believe that Holly’s family was clinging to the thought she was alive, and I may change my mind and add it- but I specifically did not reference their public statement that their trust was broken.

I think the trust they applied was to the TBI, and thinking she would be recovered alive. I don’t know why that is- maybe because of tipsters or people close to them providing similar information.

I believe that the Bobo’s have every intention of insuring they get to the truth about what happened to their daughter and why- and I keep seeing these wild theories about some sort of doomsday-ish kidnap to produce the leader’s kids or some chit.

That is ludicrous. This was an organized kidnapping with which they purposefully wanted folks to know she was taken, at 7:39 am in broad daylight. I truly believe Holly was either a willing informant to help her cousin or she was an unwilling patsy for someone else.

Lastly- I have never seen such ilk, or such a pandemic drug problem in my life. I say that when I have been having the worst allergy season ever, and I have to stand in line at the pharmacy and show my ID to get Claritin-D. A drug that years ago, my agency launched. It is freaking weird.

  17. GeorgiaDad says:

Your informant’s information is quite interesting, and would appear to fill in a lot of the gaps, but unfortunately this person’s information is not completely accurate, specifically the statement the that Holly is alive and in protective custody. If this key point is inaccurate, then it is reasonable to assume that other details are inaccurate also. Indeed, the writer states the s/he was not a local but had kin in the area.

Points that stand out for me include:

    1) Why would a student nurse overhear information about a drug ring with doing clinicals at a relatively small hospital. Prescription drugs are routinely illegally diverted in the supply change, but this rarely happens in large quantities once drugs reach a hospital.

    2) If she did overhear important information, what kind of information could she uncover that would lead to her being the ideal undercover informant?

    3) What kind of LE officers would send a petite “good girl” into a drug house wearing a wire, and then offer her no protection afterwards?

    4) Why, if an informant suddenly disappeared and was presumed kidnapped, did LE not bring in the “usual suspects”, and even worse, allowed innocent citizens to go out on searches knowing violent criminals were afoot?

My concerns are obviously biased by the person I have believed Holly to be. Like most of us, I have never met Holly or any of the other persons involved. Based on what I have read, I have pictured her as a sweet, family-oriented, girl-next-door type who is not heavily into drugs or other nefarious activity. If I were a drug dealer and someone like that walked into my house, I would immediately become suspicious. Maybe the real Holly had a tougher, more aggressive worldly side and wouldn’t have attracted as much attention as I suspected.

In general, I am disinclined to believe that HB was acting as an informant. On the other hand, it is possible that if she believed these characters were supplying her cousin, or assisting in the activities she did to afford drugs, that she would go and confront them. I have lived in the South all may life, and know that the sweetest Southern Belle can turn into a nest of hornets when her family is harmed or at risk.

Do we ever want to know? – For HB’s sake, we NEED to know.
If Holly was hero – we need to know
Were the actions of her family do to blackmail or threats – we need to know that they behaved in what they believed to be Holly’s best interest – her family has been widely, and unfairly, criticized.

I agree we need to know- or I would not have written it- I am also sure before this is over I will wish I did not.

I put the stock in the tipster because ultimately, you one can’t dispute they had the right folks to date. The rest, in my mind, could be subject to one’s motivations for people to believe she was alive at the time. I am not able to discuss the poster or tipster, as it were.

Your questions are sound and I wish I am hopeful we will get those answers.

My personal opinion about Holly, which I felt was an unfair slant to include in the piece, is that she either helped a loved-one knowingly, unknowingly, or someone pointed a finger at her to get out of their own situation.

She WAS a good girl, apparently navigating family and friends that were struggling. Not that in this swill it would matter to me, because nobody deserves what happened to her.

But like you, I agree she never saw this coming.

Blink did Settles meet with the drug dealers or was he picked up directly after meeting with Edwards? If Settles never met with the drug dealers, how did they get Holly’s name?

Did the FBI/TBI think they had everything under control and had no worries of not recovering Holly safely?

He met with the informants, yes. I think the point that concerns me most, is that for a month, Edwards was removed from his job- he was arrested on charges that were public. He had a very strong hold in this investigation and to think that there was not concern ( it is tantamount to thinking the underground, who can no longer reach their handler is thinking O- maybe he is on vacay) is not reasonable. That network knew that this was coming down long before. In fact, reading between the lines of the affidavit, it basically says that. No recordings or traps that are not voluntary occur following his arrest.

There is truly no way to know when this group went on high alert, except to say that have been surviving detection, coming in and out of the system, seemingly at will.

In fairness, no, I do not believe under any set of circumstances that Edwards acted alone, and it is not even physically or logistically possible.

Important note here- the JVTF makes no notation it is even involved with the DEA. I have several emails, posts and tips about several locals having a “friend or family member” in the DEA. I mean, it is a common thread- no idea what that means yet.

Forgive me, but am I reading correctly that Holly was actually rescued and then given up as an informant? Also, isn’t that cabin #16 where Holly was once mentioned to be? What good was the Memphis USM?

Jane that info was part of the tip that was passed on. I cannot independently verify outside of supposition on my part.

Has there been any other fall out from Edward’s actions? Have other officers or confidential informants died as a result of his actions?

  24. A Texas Grandfather says:

What a mess. One needs a flow chart to connect all the twists and turns. It appears to be across two states and maybe more. I knew something was wrong when the police did their now known to be fake road block looking for information regarding Holly.

There is another missing woman that ties in with this crime. My comment on another thread about the “Meth Heads” was more true than I ever thought. This is former LE people involved in crime. Most of these players should have been locked up long ago.

As long as our society continues to buy illegal drugs, these people and those like them, will have a reason to exist. An ugly, ugly segment of people with no morals. None of us get to pick our family. Some are born into families with great morals while others have families such as this.

Great report Blink. I do hope they are able to find Holly so the parents and her brother will have some form of closure. Holly was trying to do the right thing by helping LE, but she was not properly protected and she lost her life. Undercover work is very dangerous, especially for women.

I can’t say for certain that Holly WAS an informant, either willingly or unwittingly. I can’t say that this crew did not abduct her to keep their network in line because of the knowledge that Edwards was busted and the assumption that the investigation would now be in review. I find that even drug addled criminals get a very solid understanding of how criminal investigation works. Add to that we know several of these folks were informants. For all I know, she was their best guess about the undisclosed “new” informant, or strictly taken with the intent to ?

I don’t believe for a second that this was strictly a lust crime. I believe Gwyn brought up the Tatrow case for a reason.

On the family with good morals thing- I don’t have an answer, but I have seen families that have excellent morals, very accomplished, pillars of the community have children where one follows that path, and the other can be found driving around with a shake and bake in their own vehicle.
(Jeb Bush dau). A colleague of mine who is a prominent attorney in the South was about to put his college aged daughter into rehab after what was termed a successful intervention ( she agreed to go the Monday after an annual family gathering) and she shot herself in the backyard.

I am certainly no expert, I have never taken or used illegal drugs personally, but I have plenty of friends and colleagues who have- and the one thing I seem to see is that the goal is to impress upon your child that the difference between a life like that and not is that one never tries them, not ever. There is something in psych/soc DNA that can predispose a person to addiction/substance abuse- I am convinced of that.

Is it true that growing up in a family of questionable moral emphasis, drug use and abuse and the types of scenarios going to increase the odds the kids will continue the cycle? Of course. I am just feeling like pointing out that substance abuse can affect ANYONE similarly.

    ***********
Blink do you have any feelings or knowledge about this guy?

I only know he was arrested by him a few weeks before his claim and prosecuted for the tip- I found no connection in my research. On a side-note, and again I found no connection to Holly’s case, Dinsmore’s niece was murdered on February 21, 2013 with three other victims in a drug related burglary in Indiana- His Dad is a convicted child molester out on parole. His son was murdered by 2 drug dealers in 2007- there is an oblique reference to someone in Edward’s court file that he at one time stole drugs from dealers and then had them point guns at the head of someone that sparked my interest- but not enough to identify if it was him or in Edward’s tenure.

  26. A Texas Grandfather says:

I agree Blink about the drugs. Good families can be destroyed by a single member who gets caught up in a drug cycle. Parents that are vigilant can be aware of when a child is not behaving normally and do something about it. However, parents cannot be everywhere with an older child and unless the child has been impressed with the dangers of drugs to the point of not wanting to experiment, they will try drugs. Peer pressure is hard to resist.

The drug money in this case seems to have spilled over into several local governments to the point of people taking government funds and miss-spending them. How many have been compromised in this illegal activity? IDK.

I am going to have read this one a few times through admittedly, because I do not always pick up on your inferences as well as other readers. The family connection in particular, and the connection to Natalie. I guess I’m not really good at reading between the lines. (Just a constructive criticism for you – careful placement of commas and apostrophes make all the difference. More than a few sentences have had to be reread by me to understand because your commas were misplaced. I’m pretty much a spelling/grammar Nazi, and those kind of little details throw me off). I could never put all of this together the way the way you have, Blink. Kudos. And man, this case really did not go the way that I expected it to – dirty cops?? I did not see that one coming.I really thought it would be your standard rape and murder.

My Dear Lyndsay- I respect and appreciate your constructive criticism and freely admit the piece publication should have had more editing time. For case development reasons, it was decided to “go”.

*For anyone thinking about commenting on Lyndsay’s grammar and punctuation errors in defense- I will delete it so don’t waste your time.*

  30. Lyndsay says:

ATG, I like your point about corruption, and I think corruption is unfortunately an unavoidable problem in nearly every jurisdiction, around drug units and organized crime units, and vice units as well. I don’t think you will find a single large jurisdiction that hasn’t been touched in some way by a crooked or compromised cop. (And I say that coming from a city, Boston, known for having one of the most corrupt FBI agents to ever serve!) Cops are not highly paid, at least the young ones aren’t, and it can be tempting for them to make money on the side, especially when there’s thousands of dollars worth of drugs just sitting in an evidence room. I also think when you have cops and crooks that come from the same small towns or cities that knew eachother growing up, they’re going to end up crossing paths as adults or sometimes you have both in the same family (Bulgers). And I would also say that vice cops are also known for being dirty, albeit for different and grosser reasons. (I mean, when you have cops in Hawaii fighting against a law that allows them to have sex with prostitutes! But I digress). But I think the rules of engagement with any kind of investigation involving informants and the exchange of money can often be a gray area in general, and must be handled carefully by the right people – otherwise you get Rachel Hoffman, Brittany Wood, or Holly Bobo, to name a few. Still unbelievable that this was carried out at that high of a ranking though.
I also personally don’t know why anyone would want to touch meth. I’ve had friends that smoked weed on occasion over the years, maybe had tried cocaine or Ecstasy or acid once or twice in college, but I never, ever knew anyone who had done meth or wanted to do meth. Maybe it’s just not common in the Northeast, I don’t know. (We have a pretty bad Oxycontin problem here though). The faces of meth campaign and “Intervention” did a pretty good job of convincing people I knew that meth was not such a great high that it was worth risking addiction, your teeth, your sanity, and all your money on. It just seems like the horror of all horrible drugs. It also doesn’t just affect the user’s health, but the health of the homes in which that person cooks – cookhouses all over the place have to be decontaminated with hazmat suits, etc. It just ruins everything. And yet, like you Blink I am reminded every time I’ve had to show my license to get some Mucinex-D that there are people who actually thought it was a good idea to try it. Thing is, I can’t really think of any “gateways” to it. Oxycontin is pretty easily a gateway to heroin, coke is a gateway to crack, (and weed in my personal opinion is not really a gateway to anything except Doritos and laziness.) But I can’t think of another drug that a user says, I’m going to try meth because of x, y and z. (But maybe that’s just because I’ve had a lot of dental work, and prescriptions for acne, and wouldn’t want to destroy my skin or teeth).

  31. Lyndsay says:

B – Thanks for your defense. I did read the Tatrow case. Sadly for me, it was bad but not the worse I have ever read. The description of that couple that was murdered in a hate crime (“reverse” racism I believe, I can’t remember their names offhand but you did describe it in a post a couple years back I think), the case of what Reginald Carr and his brother did to that group of men and women (I read that testimony, and wish I didn’t still remember it. Just…) and the doctor’s family in Connecticut (again, sorry, name escapes me)…BY FAR the worst I’ve ever read. I refuse to read child murder cases so my recollection only includes adults. In full disclosure though, I’ve been assisting on a human trafficking research project for several weeks involving interview transcription with law enforcement about specific cases, and well, prostitutes, especially young male ones, get tortured in the most horrifying ways, for some john’s amusement. I won’t go any further. So sadly not much about our depraved humanity really shocks me anymore.
I DO fear that what was done to Holly, by fact of her gender and the gender of her assailants, and there being one of her and maybe many of them, is closer to what was done to the woman in the hate crime/couple case than what happened in Tatrow. I’ve learned that it doesn’t have to be about lust. In the course of enacting other crimes on females, rape will happen because it can, and because it’s about power, and it’s just another way of torturing someone that is available to an evil power-driven perpetrator.

    Very fair and sadly true.
    1. Channon Christian and Christopher Newsome
    2. Jennifer, Hayley and Michaela Petit

I agree that lust was not the motivation for Holly’s abduction and murder.

    B

  32. Lyndsay says:

Also, if all this is known, and there are so many actors involved, it’s hard to believe someone either in jail or being interviewed by TBI hasn’t revealed where her body is. How can there be so much information on who was involved, for what possible reason, and where it possibly took place, yet not have a body? I fear that there is no body because there is no intact body. Ugh.

My personal opinion is that she was moved. It is Mom’s Day so out of respect for her family I am going to be intentionally vague but if the goal is to implicate everyone so they have to keep their mouths shut- then the goal finally would be to make sure nobody could prove it.

There is plenty of rumor out there about moving her out of the well from the Adams property. I never believed they were stupid enough- these people are avid outdoorsmen to the point of “survivalists” so they understand decomposition of remains and other areas associated with remains disposal.

Keep in mind that the Adam’s property was searched prior to moving the prisoners and Austin (at least- I suspect Alexander has one also, but there is another witness I am aware of)signs his deal on the 6th.. therefore we know the location he provided was not the Adam’s property. HOWEVER- we know that Adams was indicted the day before Austin signs the immunity deal. Reasonable deduction here is that Austin may not have known and tried to swing a deal he can’t deliver because he does not know, or they moved her.

If I were consulting on the case, I would be exploring the area of this group’s ties to the whole shell/pearl cultivation thing until it can be excluded and I would also be very interested in the Natchez Creek (Trace) area.

Regardless, the State filed felony murder and may seek the death penalty and they are not doing that without physical evidence that support a proponderance of evidence she is dead and was murdered.

    B

  33. Lyndsay says:

Hi again, sorry Blink you can edit my comments if you want as I have a tendency to ramble. I found this part of Austin’s arrest and indictment especially troubling. (I’m not certain of the rules of posting quotes from articles on here, so I’m just paraphrasing). The indictment notes that Austin originally agreed to immunity from prosecution for crimes related to the disposal, destruction, burial, concealment, etc. of her body, in exchange for info on where her body is located. He did not provide said info, hence the agreement was rescinded and he was charged. Sounds like he may have originally confessed to being an eyewitness that didn’t do the actual killing, but was present, and involved in disposing of her remains. So either they received further information indicating he was more involved, and may have been involved in the actual killing, or he wouldn’t tell them where where he disposed of her body. Or, they’re playing prisoners dilemma with all three and a promise that since none of them will turn on the other, they’re charging all three, and making good on that threat now. This is just my reading of it.

    http://www.tennessean.com/story/news/crime/2014/04/29/prosecutors-plan-indict-third-suspect-bobo-case/8489391/

Lyndsay- the actual civil suit is in the dropbox link highlighted within the piece itself. An interesting point here- the same day the agreement is signed, whatever location he gave them was searched and nothing was found ( the agreement is very specific in that regard). The State emails his lawyer, Evans emails back on March 8th- nothing happens until March 27, when SA Hall replies with the “when we indict your client”.

She simply states he has been untruthful and non-cooperative. I have to believe the State considered the fact that Evans might seek an injunction and weighed that possibility. So as I opined in the piece- did it benefit their strategy to have the agreement made public by virtue of the suit ( nobody sought a protective order to keep from public disclosure or under seal- unless the ex parte request from Luke was designed to do that ( which I would believe would be in his best interests if he wanted to further his cooperation and keep his client from indictment).

In short- whatever investigative information was gained between Marc 6th and March 27th rendered Austin meaningless in their view, and apparently about to be indicted. I was surprised the suit was not dismissed immediately- I agree with the State’s position, with the exception that an indictment and subsequent charge could produce tangible loss.

Austin’s agreement comes after the trio is recorded- we DONT KNOW if a proffer session was on the table to necessitate that. If it was, then they are going to have some potential issues with using his portion of any statements of complicity, or possibly, any of it. This makes me think that he was approached after the fact and is not dumb enough to sit there and discuss his/their involvement to the specificity the State would need or they would never have sought an immunity deal. Why not just charge him?

Cause they need a body, but have physical evidence of her murder, that is where they are. If Austin truly has location information, imo, they will deal with this behind the scenes and settle it out of court. If he was playing games one should realize that certain aspects of that immunity agreement supersede any other investigations or agencies ( very brief ref there most did not catch) and it’s timeframe is January 1, 2011 to present. So someone should tell me again why they think this is your typical lust abduction without other things going on. The State clearly does not.

    B

  34. Lyndsay says:

just had another thought, totally speculative. the tipster is saying that Bobo supposedly heard something at the hospital where she worked that led to her turning informant. Is it possible that someone in the meth group (maybe her cousin?) was trying to use her hospital connection and access to get scrip pads, or prescriptions under the table? It would not be the first time an addict or a dealer has tried to use a family member or friend’s connections in the medical field to procure drugs. That would make more sense to me than something to do with meth, since there was an investigation into prescription drugs. That would more along the lines of something that Holly would have access to, or would witness happening at a hospital – the exchange or theft of pain pills.

I agree with you that makes more sense. I have always had the concern that she may have stumbled upon something, or been approached because she may have been familiar with the individual (s). There is a foundation for that in this case I have withheld for the moment.

I am going to speculate here…Zach’s grandmother died on April 3 2011…as Blink states in her piece “Grandmother Becky who died 12 days before Holly’s abduction.” There has been rumored that pain medication may have been diverted to others and not grandma. 36. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Lyndsay

The dangers of corruption in government have existed since the earliest times of civilization. There are those that get into government service for the good of their community and there are those who choose government service so they can gain power and control as well as enrich themselves with the money in and around government activities.

The drug problems have always been there from primitive times. The 20th century created the prescription drug addiction and the illegal off-shoots we see today. My uncle was an early pharmacist in East Texas (late 19th century). Those were the days when opium and other such drugs did not require a written prescription.

Addiction is a terrible thing. Some people are prone to chemical addiction and prescription drugs are often the cause. Others go the illegal route beginning with “Pot” and then graduating to other drugs. Some will try every avenue to acquire them, including stealing and trying to get a friend, family member or colleague at work to help them.

The illegal drug business generates billions of dollars in revenue that is often used to “buy” the services of LE and the courts. This is what has happened in this case. Blink probably has enough information she did not include in this piece that would make our heads shake in surprise at how many are involved. It may take years to make a real dent in cleaning up the local government corruption.

The average citizen is aware that there are problems in government, but because they do not investigate nor understand how government really works, they do little or nothing about helping to keep it honest.

Just last evening, a reporter took to the streets of Dallas to interview people about things that are important to know about the government of our country including local government. I found it hard to believe how ignorant of history and government most were. The reporter was not able to get any correct answers until they interviewed a couple that were in their mid-fifties. This is the prime reason that corruption can exist for a long time. It is simply ignorance and lack of interest by the average citizen.

  39. Ragdoll says:

What are the chances that this killing machine aka the ‘A-chain gang’ (I’m changing that platform, for obvious reasons), knew about the Tatrow case?

Are we looking at a copycat abduction and murder…or a pattern related to homicide involving meth?

You know, that was my reason for including the consideration, and there is also the fact that Gwyn is also the former head of the forensics division of the TBI. This is a leader who knows the effect of what comes out of his mouth before he says it. The motivation for the Tatrow case of Zammit and Harry were retribution for a perceived threat- I have no doubt about that. There are heinous meth crimes all over the state of TN- he mentioned that one.

Now, I don’t know if this is an agency overlap failure to inform ( remember the findings of 9/11?) or what- but I can say I have reason to believe there was great concern about what investigators were dedicated to assisting interviews early on and TBI Agent Mehr brought in resources from OTHER COUNTIES for a reason.

So now you have a slew of criminal element, who may or may not be working as informants for reduced sentences, for one or more agencies, who may be exempt from prosecution for certain aspects that further the investigations. It is not working.

My momma’s day consists of my boys, sick, with the flu…bless their hearts. I have time on my hands…

I came across a documentary, created because of the Tatrow murder case.

Basically, it’s an intensive look into meth aka crank or crack and it’s destructive path, in TN. Already proven, it leads its users down a malignant, virulent path of evil. One hit is all it takes. Second chances are scarce; meth shows no mercy. On a detailed level, it also talks about the effects of meth on the brain and how it affects the reward hormones, (ie: dopamine), giving the user a false sense of greatness, so to speak (users or addicts give testimonies of their own experiences). It’s described as putting drain cleaner into your bloodstream. Pure poison and toxic. What it does to the heart, organs and body, is truly mortifying. That’s just the beginning.

    Terribly informative.

So Sorry FriendLY- allergies galore here but no flu. Please enjoy your Day regardless. I appreciate you posting this link.

This is hard to watch. I challenge those interested in this case, or any who know of or have a personal story about “meth”.

My Mom’s Day Award goes to Putnam County citizens today, for supporting the precursor law on pseudoephedrine. And I beg anyone who does not support the need for a script in their state for pseudoephedrine.

It has proven tremendously successful- so look at it this way- do you want meth freaks driving to your state so they can buy it without one?

Blink – I came across the article on the threat from ZA toward his brother, about putting him in “a hole” with Holly. In this interview with the Adams’ grandfather, he says there are 2 holes on their property – one of which is a well. I’m wondering what you think of this lead? You seem pretty convinced that her remains are in Natchez Trace park, but grandpa seems to have some pretty good info. Do you think she was moved somehow from one of these holes to Natchez Trace? Just wanted to get your opinion on grandpa’s info.

I’m sorry you’re struggling with allergies, friendLY. I’ve been hit hard, too. So thankful for Reactin.

  44. Ragdoll says:

I meant to add….here in my province, anything containing pseudoephedrine, is either kept behind the pharmacist’s counter or requires a script.

What I found frightening, from the digital film, is how the recipe for meth is changing. An addict who purchases the crap, never knows what the content is. Meth is evolving, and alarmingly so. When someone calls it a drain cleaner, it makes you wonder if there are products on hardware shelves being used to replace the original ingredients from drug stores.

Generic Name: pseudoephedrine (SOO doe ee FED rin)

Brand Names: Chlor Trimeton Nasal Decongestant, Contac Cold, Drixoral Decongestant Non-Drowsy, Elixsure Decongestant, Entex, Genaphed, Kid Kare Drops, Nasofed, Seudotabs, Silfedrine, Sudafed, Sudafed 12-Hour, Sudafed 24-Hour, Sudafed Children’s Nasal Decongestant, Sudodrin, SudoGest, SudoGest 12 Hour, Suphedrin, Triaminic Softchews Allergy Congestion, Unifed

Thinking out loud…I’m completely stumped over why Gwyn stated Holly could possibly be alive after 3 years, considering previous cases too similar to hers. Has there been a case, specifically in TN, where an alleged informant was kept alive for years? If meth is linked to organized crime, informants are usually considered a problem that needs to be taken care of. It never ends well.

…or maybe I’ve watched too many Good Fella movies.

There is a line in the immunity agreement that I think is notable and very telling, and would give credence to local rumors I have read about on what people think happened between her kidnapping and murder:
“The State further agrees to give Shayne Kyle Austin immunity for information concerning the possession of any controlled substances, the sale of any controlled substances, the possession of drug paraphernalia, and/or any other drug related criminal activity (not to include any drugs administered to Holly Lynn Bobo).”
He does not receive immunity for drugs administered to Holly, as I am understanding it, giving rise to the possibility that he told them, or they know, that she was drugged during the commission of the attack.

I believe that is at least a version of the “instrument of murder” based on the immunity agreement, or the State would not have outlined that provision, imo.

Blink – please delete my previous comment on the grandfather’s comments on the wells on the property – your previous comments more than explains this now. Thanks.

Just a question, we know that Holly’s nursing program was through the Tennessee Technology Center. Was she doing her clinicals yet at any local hospitals? Where was her nursing job or internship located, if she had one? (had a friend who majored in nursing, I don’t think clinicals began until junior or senior year, and Holly was only 20).

    Signing that immunity agreement,
one has to wonder if he can read.

I know- the other observation I had, was that it does not grant him immunity in anything but State Court.
