Missing Marine Wife Erin Corwin Breaking News: Husband Was NOT On Duty The Day She Disappeared

Posted by BOC Staff | Chris Lee,Erin Corwin,Jonathan Corwin,Missing and Endangered,Nichole Lee | Monday 21 July 2014 9:34 pm

Erin Corwin, 19 and approximately 2 weeks pregnant  when she disappeared on Saturday June 28th was last seen at about 10AM on Valle Vista and Ranch Rds, according to Police witness Michael Beasely and his sister Jeanette.   Corwin is the wife of Corporal Jonathan Corwin, stationed at The Marine Corp Air Ground Combat Center ( MCAGCC).

Erin Corwin credit Facebook

Beasely describes a young man in a compact red car having a brief conversation with her, and watched her get into the red vehicle after locking the passenger side door.  While Beasely said he could not state for certain it was Erin Corwin, it was definitely her car that was located about 100 yards into the desert from where he saw it on June 30th.   Beasely’s sister Jessica also recalled seeing the car  at some point that morning, but did not see the exchange with the man in the red car.  The Beasely’s gave this information to police at the scene while interviewing the water services worker who called detectives.

“When I came back a half hour later, just the (blue) car was sitting there. Next thing, I hear the weekend goes by and Monday morning the sheriffs are there looking for this girl because she ain’t home yet,” Beasley recalled.

Four search warrants have been released in the investigation into the disappearance of Erin Corwin, one of which has prompted and internet firestorm of friends and family members describing what they allege are direct accounts from Cpl. Corwin.   As the affidavits to the subpoenas for exigent warrants have been sealed, it is not clear why one of those search warrants was for the dark colored Jeep of fellow Marine Christopher Brandon Lee.   According to several online sleuthing sites claiming to have members that are in touch with John Corwin and in some cases investigators, Lee and Erin had a previous relationship that ended last Spring, but following her disappearance Cpl. Corwin located items  he says, on June 29th ,  prompted him to believe that the child Erin was carrying may not have been his.

Corporal Corwin credit Facebook

In an exclusive development in the case,  through a source that agreed to speak to BOC on the strict condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak officially on the investigation, a review of Cpl. Corwin’s duty roster shows that he was NOT on duty Saturday June 28th ;  the morning after  he attended  a neighbor’s outside gathering that Erin Corwin left early.

Corwin told investigators that his wife had made plans to scope out sites to photograph during her Mother’s scheduled visit a few days later.  It is not clear why Corwin said that he last saw Erin at 7 AM but was not able to offer a description of her clothing or why it appeared  (Beasely) that she just headed toward the park at 10 AM.  Corwin told investigators he thought he had to wait 24 hours to report a missing person and reported her missing to a San Bernardino county deputy Sunday morning.  In an earlier interview,  Erin’s mother Loretta ( Lore) Heavilin said her son in law told her he did not report her missing because he thought she was staying overnight at the White Rock Ranch and Rehab – where Erin had adopted her horse Cassy.  Both Nichole and Christopher Lee adopted horses at White Rock as well.

Later that evening,  when Corwin’s commanding officer went to the couple’s home to check on Jon,  fellow members of his 3/11 India Battery  were called to Corwin’s residence after he was found inebriated and apparently destructive to the property to assist in it’s clean up and repair .   He was placed on PTAD orders  the same day.

Investigators will not confirm nor deny if they have developed a suspect or suspects in Erin’s disappearance,  but they have stated that neither Christopher Lee nor his wife Nichole are considered suspects or persons of interest in Corwin’s disappearance.

“Just because their names are in a search warrant or you received their names from some other source rather than the sheriff’s department; they’re not listed as suspects or persons of interest so we wouldn’t have a comment.”

In what may be an unrelated event,  Lee was charged on July 4th with possession of a destructive device.   Lee secured a $25,000 bond  according to police records and is scheduled to be arraigned in September.   Lee was arrested during the execution of a search warrant at the White Rock Horse Rescue.

Chris Lee credit Facebook

Late this afternoon, within an hour of the San Bernardino County press release,  a portion of the previously sealed affidvavits surrounding warrants were released.  Although SBSD  has previously stated that Christopher Lee was not considered a suspect, he is absolutely implicated in the documents according to The Desert Sun.

“It is highly likely that Erin could have been harmed by an unknown firearm,” detectives wrote in court documents. “Sometime after Erin left with Lee, her phone was deactivated (turned off). Detectives believe if Erin was injured and left at an undisclosed location, she would not (be) able to call for help.”

It  is unknown if what investigators swore is accurate, or perhaps were unaware of Beasely described as a  “…light haired,  skinny guy, small guy, not much hair, but sandy colored hair, shorter than 5’9″, who could have been a Marine…”  individual appeared to meet up with Erin Corwin at approximately 10 AM the morning of her disappearance.  But it is clear that if Mr. Beaseley’s account is accurate, it is not likely to fit the description of Chris Lee.

In the wake of the recent developments,  The Heavilin family returned to Tennessee over weekend.

    @Blink.
    TY for thread.
My 1st thoughtful post disappeared when cell batt died.

So, Here is unthoughtful. I Understand a youth of today’s culture could easily be drunk & dismantling home when he likely thought his wife left him, despite his thinking they’d reconciled magnanimously on his part after a former baby loss plus affair….all in a few months. Better a pastor than booze, but his cultural background is what it is.

I do not think CL’s physique is significantly at odds with Beasley’s description,
given Beasley was an accidental witness with no reason to observe or remember. But his media interviews
will discredit his veracity at trial, sadly.

Interesting 700 Geronimo is the horse rescue. Guess CL was sleeping there?
So much for Jon thinking she’d spend the nite at the ranch.
imo that man was too cintrolled & forgiving.

imo if Jon was going to hurt someone, it would have been Chris, not his wife.
    —-
One issue with Erin, not yet addressec, is that she led a very sheltered life between homeschooling and church culture, and likely lacked sexual experience–heightened vulnerability to Chris.

btw I don’t buy her “closeness to mother.”
eloped at 17. (resulting in leavingmother)
    silent re sexual adventure, apparently.

    1. Agreed at the closeness of Mother- not an indictment on my part, but all factors considered, those published and kept private, I sense a serious detachment.
    2. I respectfully disagree that Beasely does not stand up. Had I the time.. I would have done an analysis on his extended interview. I am not saying Corwin was behind the red wheel- but I am not seeing how Lee is described similarly in his interview- which I found credible. Although, I do admit Beasley had seen coverage of the case prior to his public interview.

A good piece. However, there is something wrong where the guy Chris Lee is involved. The report of the red car is of some concern.

Here we are in high desert country again. The early reports from the spouse referenced the fact that Erin was looking for a camping locations, not photo locations.

Highway 29 turns South crossing into Riverside County to go to Yuca Valley and then down to I-10 at Twenty-nine Palms. The Jushua Tree forest headquarters is near Twenty-nine Palms. It is less than 45 minutes to the Arizona State line.

This terrain is very rugged except in the valleys. The marine training base was located in this area because it is very similar to the terrain in parts of Iraq.

Did Erin run away with the guy in the red car? Is that why her husband was found drunk and destructive by his buddies? Or did he find that in fact she was pregnant by another man and harm them both?

This is a huge area to search. A lot of small valleys and canyons adjacent to the rocky peaks in the area.

So glad you posted this Blink, I have been following this case closely and was so hoping she would return home safely but it’s not looking good.

Didn’t Jessica Beasely say that she had saw that same red car at that location on other occasions as well? Also, I had read that Chris Lee was discharged from the Marines on July 7th, could that have anything to do with the his charge on July 4th or was it strictly due to being finished with his active duty?

    No, she did not.
His EAS came through on the day after his formal charge in the docket, on 7/8.

Over the last 48 hours information in Erin’s case is finally being released into mainstream media…and there is quite a bit we are learning. It sounds like the investigators – who haven’t seemed to miss a beat – are following the evidence where it leads them. This is always a good thing. It appears that the footprints that start at Erin’s driver’s side door and end at a vehicle whose tires are consistent with Lee’s jeep’s tires is pretty strong evidence. Not to mention, all the texts between Erin and her BFF in Tenn discussing Erin and Lee’s alleged celebratory hunting trip that Saturday (the name of this celebration makes me wonder about the POI’s IQ points, seriously).

I do not for one moment think Erin’s husband is involved in this heinous crime. If anyone does, just read what Lee’s wife, Nicole, told Megli, the horse ranch owner, (“no body, no crime”…and “they’ll never find her body”).

Someone needs to tell Ms. Lee that LE may not need a body, not with all the crystal clear circumstantial evidence that seems to be pilling up quite nicely in this case. But, LE clearly have not given up on finding Erin. They want to bring her home to her family.

All of the above is just my opinion. All suspects/POI’s are presumed innocent until/unless that are found guilty.

    Great to see you Grace-
Where have you read that Nichole told Megli “no body no crime.” ?

What evidence are you referring to that is crystal clear?

Blink, the information that Megli gave to LE is in the article at the link below. Megli made the above referenced comments to LE when they showed up to interview her, for the second time, I believe.

    Here’s the link:

Thanks Grace. You are correct. There is nothing about a witness seeing Erin get into a red car from hers at 10AM and nothing about Erin’s cell phone pings, or anyone else’s for that matter. I sincerely hope Cpl. Corwin was not involved, but I do find Beasely a credible witness. I have interviewed some of the folks mentioned in that affidavit, and some who wish to remain anonymous. What I can say is that Lee invited another couple to go hunting ( which I actually was more like shooting) that morning so I am not understanding why he might do that if he was planning to meet up with Erin. There is also the issue that a detective actually told the neighbor that Erin and Lee were having an affair, not the other way around. I have reviewed the scanner traffic from the car recovery- it backs up Beasely, which imo means there is at least one more person in contact with Erin or someone closely resembling her at 10AM at that location that does not match Lee’s description. So troublesome and just breaks my heart.

  8. N. Cahela says:

GraceintheHills, I read all the same information that you listed above and I agree that her husband doesn’t have anything to do with her missing. Every since information came out about her having an affair with a married man, this case has reminded me of the Heather Elvis case. By the way, I also read that Nichole Lee told Megli that LE missed important evidence because they didn’t check the garage during their first search,

I hope you are right, but I am not loving the fact that the Beasely information was obviously withheld from the SBCSD case agents, and Bachman recently stated that they were really unable to tell for sure if Erin ever entered the park.

  9. Eloise says:

Finally, the affadivit states that Lee’s wife, Nichole, admitted to a friend that the couple had something to hide. According to the court document, Nichole Lee berated her husband for not having an alibi and for “not being able to keep his lies straight.” The friend interviewed by deputies was Isabel Megli, owner of the White Rock Horse Rescue Ranch in Yucca Valley, where both Lee and Corwin own horses.

“Nichole made statements to Isabel about the detectives having missed something at their residence when it was searched because detectives did not search the garage,” the affidavit states. “Nichole told Isabel that without a body the detectives did not have a case against them and the detectives would never find the body.” http://www.desertsun.com/story/news/crime_courts/2014/07/21/erin-corwin-christopher-lee-arrest/12961823/?sf28800445=1

The investigation has come to focus on Lee, Corwin’s next door neighbor, who may have been the father of her child, according to an affidavit filed in the by Detective Corey Emom. In the affidavit, Emom wrote that he had reviewed text messages — sent by Corwin to a friend — confirming her romantic relationship with Lee, and that the couple had taken a day trip to celebrate Corwin’s pregnancy on the day she disappeared.

Yes she was only 3 weeks pregnant at the time.
I concur Blink, Beasley is a wonderful, reliable witness. I just feel CL is
not at odds with his description.
Nicole will end up being charged as an accessory after the
fact if she doesn’t come forward. Great detective work in the
probable cause statement. I hope a family member is staying with JC.

I concede that I would like to see Beasely’s statement from the scene when the car was recovered in contrast to his interview, after he viewed images of the case, etc, to see if it is possible that has effected his recollection, I continue to keep an open mind- but I just saw the Basin Captain spokesperson say he has never heard of Chris Lee in the investigation. Lot’s and lots of incongruency.

What interested me in the search produce now retained by LE was the Canon digital camera and the Samsung phone.
Tech & forensics will tell the story.

ATG–Since you are gun knowledgeable & a master of detail,
can you list the weapons he allegedly had, ie 22 rifle, and
what guns the found spent shells go to (ie .40)? I’m not
happy thinking about the knife’s potential use since Nicole
said no body would be found. I don’t think their relationship
was romantic from his pov, but opportunistic, and he likely hated her
at the end & viewed her as unfinished business.

One conflict is Beasley id’d a red sedan, but tire tracks at parking site
are a jeep’s per Probable Cause. Maybe Beasley’d seen the
red sedan rendevous previously & confused episodes.

I have interviewed friends of his who allege he told them about the affair and the pregnancy, to include when she went missing. She was 2-3 weeks pregnant, unless she was not intimate with her husband ( she announced her pregnancy to him on father’s day so doubtful) I really have to say I am not buying anyone knew for sure if she was carrying a child of another. Now, if I find out that MAY be the case by some means- that is one Hell of a confrontation.

Lee’s phone was recovered during the first search, so not sure who owned those electronics, but it looks to me that is was a second bite of the apple for LE.

Did the texts to TN confidante say the site
of the hunting trip was 2 hours away?

Undisclosed location is what is in the warrant- but I cannot tell from the report ( against protocol) whether the Deputy is not disclosing it or the text actually said undisclosed because right after that it says “lee said he was taking Erin hunting”. About 2 hours from 29 Palms. Gotta be honest, there is no set of circumstances I believe Erin Corwin is shooting an animal. I believe the search areas were heavily dictated by Lee’s movements that day. It does not appear that Lee’s phone was off either.

I would also like to know what time those texts were sent in relation to her phone being deactivated. Who is texting that to their friend at 5:00 AM TN time?

“Rifles, shotguns, and pistols are all commonly used for hunting deer. Most regions place limits on the minimum caliber or gauge to be used. Most states require centerfire rifles which is of a caliber larger than .229 in diameter. States that allow shotguns, the minimum gauge is twenty gauge or larger, which includes 16 gauge, 12 gauge and 10 gauge. Pistols are centerfire which include .357 or .44 magnum. Rimfire rifles of .22 caliber are often prohibited due to the inability of the caliber to kill a deer effectively which brings about ethical concerns.”

    What is a “potatoe gun”?

It is a potato launcher apparently, and gonna be honest, it very much depends on the jurisdiction as to whether or not it is illegal and the fuel used, etc, as to whether or not it qualifies as an explosive device.

According to the ATF, unless your shooting it at someone, it does not constitute a destructive device. I don’t see where propane or any other flammables or potatoes were seized, either. I have a feeling this is going to go away.

    From the ATF:

We have previously examined that certain muzzle loading devices known as “potato guns.” These potato guns are constructed from PVC plastic tubing. They use hair spray or a similar aerosol substance for a propellant, and have some type of spark ignitor. We have determined that these devices, as described, are not firearms provided that they are used solely for launching potatoes for recreational purposes. However, any such devices which are used as weapons or used to launch other forms of projectiles may be firearms and destructive devices as defined.

interesting case. lots to sort out still. just some thoughts to add to the good list already here:

jeep tires are not at all consistent with tires you would find on a compact car like beaseley saw. i wonder if beaseley has any connection to CL or JC for that matter. or the ranch. i wonder if the spot was used somewhat frequently by people meeting and sharing rides or hiking, etc.? sounds like there was some space there that could be used for parking.

CL still seems to have a lack of alibi and to have lied to investigators on several angles.

JC’s C.O. coming by with some of the troops to help clean up suggests to me that they are making a conscious decision to support or help him. perhaps this says something about any insight they might have into the story or the character of those involved. was lee in the same troop or known to them as well?

No, Lee was in the 2/7. This link has the extended interview at the bottom with the case Agent. Very unhappy these were released and very clearly states that there are a number of other suspects they are looking at. He hints that maybe one has not been interviewed officially yet.

  25. A Texas Grandfather says:

This is beginning to look similar to the case of the young marine clerk in North Carolina. In this case, rather than being buried in a back yard under a fire pit, the body could have been placed somewhere in the desert that is remote and difficult to access. Or, it could have been dismembered and scattered about. The knife found during the search could be a survival knife or a hunting knife. Either type would be sufficient for dismembering a body.

Based on information reported by Lee’s wife regarding not finding a body she may be the one who knows enough to help solve the case. However, she too may be too stubborn to give any useful information and will be charged as an accessory if the investigation reveals her involvement.

With Erin being the wife of a military man, the military will more than likely be doing their own investigation. Will the two agencies(military and SBCS) co-operate? I hope so.

I am going to disagree somewhat with the Wiki article about hunting deer. The 223 cal. bullets found in the black ammo case during the search are for an AR-15 unless they are for one of the super 22 cal. rifles. It is very possible to kill deer with a 22LR bullet. I have witnessed such kills more than once. At 200 yards a 30-06 or 30-30 is more difficult to shoot accurately than a 22LR. Open country such as that found in the desert country nearly always call for a rifle rather than a shotgun.

Center fire shells begin with the .223 cal. which is a very high speed round with a boat-tail bullet design that can penetrate light body armour. The high speed is the factor that creates body trauma and the boat-tail projectile design causes it to tumble after striking something.

There were also 40 cal. bullets found, but no mention of a handgun or rifle of that caliber. Could that be the item not found because the garage was not searched?

Many people are concerned about the stopping power of the 9mm projectile and are moving up to 40 cal. The newer 40 cal. bullets are often found with extended powder cases that produce more gas pressure when fired in a handgun capable of withstanding the increased pressure. The result is a projectile that has more mass than a 9mm and travels at a speed almost twice that of a 45 cal..

Shotguns are worthless to a deer hunter in open country, but very effective in heavy brush or highly populated areas where there is concern for how far the projectile will carry. Going deer hunting with a pistol is done with the understanding that it is difficult to get close enough for a kill. In other words, no one looking for meat would make things that difficult.

A can of hair spray has defensive uses as well. It makes a good blowtorch when the propellant is ignited. Not all hair spray containers use a flammable propellant.

A potato gun operates similar to a mortar where the projectile travels in a steep arc.

I am not sure at this point what the F350 U-Haul truck seized means to the case. It could be that LE was just covering all the possibilities.

and so far the motive suggested for CL, that he didn’t want nicole to find out, does not quite hold up, as it seems she knows at least something about CL’s involvement with erin. perhaps that is only true now because of the investigation. don’t know if CL had plans to move back to alaska before all this happened, but the timing right now does not look good for him.

if on the other hand JC found out what was going on, and didn’t let erin know, well i can certainly see how the investigators would be pissed that info was leaked.

    DATE/TIME: June 29, 2014 **UPDATE – July 22, 2014**

INCIDENT: Missing Person Investigation – UPDATE

    LOCATION: Twentynine Palms

VICTIM(S): Erin Corwin, age 19 of Twentynine Palms

    SUMMARY:
Detectives have received information regarding possible locations to be searched for potential evidence of foul play regarding the disappearance of 19-year-old Erin Corwin. The information is the result of an extensive three-week investigation.

“We are looking for a crime scene,” said Leland Boldt, the captain of the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigation Division.

Investigators from the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigation Division have spoken to numerous persons who knew Erin prior to her disappearance looking for any and all information that may lead them to Erin’s whereabouts. It is imperative investigators determine whether or not there was foul play, Sgt. Trevis Newport said. Search warrants have been executed as part of this investigation to assist investigators in determining what may have occurred.

Mr B, stated the driver of the unidentified *red* car had sandy blonde hair and appeared to be an unbuff male.

Has NL recently changed hairstyles? How tall is she? How tall is JC?

Sorry for the questions , but I can’t for the life of me find any identifying info regarding this.

I have listened to that extended interview at least 10 times, he starts out describing the man in the red car as “did not have much hair” , light colored, sandy- little guy, and proceeds to make a hand gesture that indicates he has narrow shoulders, in comparison to his own. I have to consider the possibility between the sighting and his interview he reviewed pictures of the case coverage so it is possible that effected his observations, (as an analyst we have to think that way) but my personal opinion is that he was describing an individual similar to JC. Definitely was not describing Chris Lee, imo.

    P.S.
Blink , I was wondering how long before you would post on your page regarding Erin. I was beginning to feel like a stalker specifically looking and reading your comments on the FB page I commented to you on.
I think it’s simply Ma-velous you are on this case. *)

  33. Rose says:

OK ATG, so what I’m boiling down is

    1) .223 cal (not used?) shells in black ammo case
-fit either AR15 or super cal. 22 rifle
    -very high speed & effective
    -also known as 22LR.
I assume LR stands for long range.
Do these fit a regular 22 rifle?
    2) .40 used shells in jeep
    -potent
-fit handgun or rifle (what caliber rifle?)
    3) the 22 rifle. Imo this was the weapon CL owned that
his wife stated had been in the garage in the jeep, which she said
he transported to the rescue ranch, and she identified it was in the closet
to the Detective there, who took it then.
I don’t think the Probable Cause statement or wife would’ve tacked on
the LR– 22 rifle sufficed as an identifier.

  34. Rose says:

    I don’t think it’s important he had a 22 rifle.
    imo most western farmers do.
imo it’s important neither he nor
his wife disclosed it existed & its whereabouts in the garage
    during the 7/1 search.

  35. Rose says:

You got me Blink & lizzy on not reading carefully.

I thought that Gal 2 with a horse was Erin & glanced past.

Goes to show what a hat can do.

Only diff I can see, looking closely, is perhaps rimless glasses?

On the hat- I could not agree more. One either wears one, or does not, imo

My cop friends say they would rather be shot by almost anything other than a .22. The bullets tend to ricochet inside of the body usually causing more damage than a straight clean entry and exit wound. The probable cause document made me think they are looking for the gun that matched the loose shells, not the .22. Isn’t it being suggested somewhere that an explosive device might be at play? Surely they don’t mean the potato gun, do they?

  37. Rose says:

Anyone who’d shoot a 19 yo pg girl
would dismember her. As he’s a hunter
from Alaska, imo he’s used to butchering.

As to U Haul. Whatever he was wearing, traces of her
blood likely attached during the body disposition.
Probably gonna toss it on the WA-AK ferry. Glad SB got
his dirty laundry, so to speak.

  38. kuaitzudog says:

Maybe it was NL in the blue car and CL was there to pick her up. Perhaps the “deed” was already completed?? Maybe that is why NL said “they will never find the body, because she already “knew” what happened to Erin?

I just noticed that Nichole Lee has a daughter according to her fb page. She appears to be under the age of 8 so since they were married in 2006, I’m assuming Chris is the bio dad. To me this makes the affair and impending birth even more complicated. Didn’t know there were kids involved.

To answer your question. Yes, any of those described in my piece are capable of killing game or a human. It depends on where the bullet strikes and how bone may or may not deflect the projectile.

A shot in the arm with even a 45 will not kill. However, a body or head shot will kill and sometimes instantly. A shot to the body with a 22LR would have to hit a vital area such as the heart or damage one of the arteries or veins to the point that bleeding could not be stopped.

A bullet is sized in caliber (diameter) and the weight of the projectile in grains. Small caliber projectiles such as the 22LR are available in 35 to 50 grain bullets. The heavier the projectile, the more potential damage it has.

A bullet to the neck has the potential to damage the spine or the lower brain that controls the involuntary (auto body) functions such as breathing or heart action. A shot to the ear canal or in the eyeball with a small caliber projectile would allow it to enter the skull and more than likely not have enough power to punch through the skull bones causing it to bounce around in the interior soft tissue of the brain causing great damage and usually death.

The larger caliber projectiles have the mass and force to go completely through a human skull or break a rib bone and continue into the heart or lungs and pass out of the body through the back causing great damage to the organs and other body parts.

One of the guys I worked with was hit from behind by a 50 cal. round in WWII. The wound did not hit his spine and was below the heart-lung cavity. It passed through his body doing some damage to his stomach. He did not die because no vital organs were damaged other than the stomach and he had immediate help from a medic.

There is much more to know about the behavior of bullets into a target. Even a BB has the potential to do harm to a body if it enters at the right point and has enough velocity.

  41. Rose says:

If they measure the footprints SB claimed led from the blue car to the jeep, imo they know the shoe size.
Nicole is large boned; I expect they differ. And if that was NL carrying EC’s camera when she got in
the jeep, imo EC must have had 1 or 2 shots identifying the crime scene area. The Q is, if it were NL, why would
    she keep a vic’s camera?

    I don’t believe that is Erin’s camera.
    B

  42. Rose says:

the pic of NL looks like a ponytail out the back.
See the stray hairs on the left
    jutting out by black collar?

Are you indicating that Erin lacked knowledge sufficient to protect herself from a predatory male?

I have known many smart home schooled young women. Most are gentle and reserved. Would they behave differently when they leave the family atmosphere? I don’t know. They certainly would not be what I call “street smart”.

  44. A Texas Grandfather says:

A 22 cal. bullet has multiple case sizes regarding length. The dia. is the caliber. A rifle or a hand gun must have a loading and extracting mechanism that will operate correctly with the particular round. Some have the capability to fire ,without jamming, several of the sizes.

There are 22 shorts; 22 reg; 22 longs; 22 long rifle and 22 magnum sizes. The casing and the bullet length beyond the casing create the size designation. A longer casing allows additional powder to be placed in it. That increases the pressure in the chamber and barrel cause the bullet to travel at a greater velocity. The greater the velocity, the farther it will travel and when it strikes a target has the capability to do more damage.

A 40 cal. shell requires a gun to have a mechanism and barrel to match. Some pistols may be able to fire a caliber just below the actual size. A set of ballistics tables for handguns and rifles is available from several sources. Use Google to find them. Gun manufactures specifications give the actual rounds that a particular weapon is capable of firing safely.

  45. A Texas Grandfather says:

Two people who know what they are doing can butcher and wrap a large deer in an hour. The Sara Palin series has a segment where she goes hunting with her father and her father’s friend. She shoots a large antelope that probably weighs near a thousand lbs. They butcher it on site rather that try to transport it back to the camp.

We don’t know what job Mr. Lee did in the Marines. This is an active training base probably for advanced training before being shipped to a war zone. Do they have explosives to deal with in their training? If so, how careful are the trainers about accounting for all explosive devices? Would it be possible to steal one?

The problem with using an explosive device is the loud noise they make as well as the ground vibrations they create. There is a guy that has a federal permit for experimenting with shaped charges that operates on a 1,000 acre tract about twelve miles from me. When he fires a test, the report is loud and sometimes we can feel the ground vibrations.

Yes, he and they have extensive explosive device field training.

  46. A Texas Grandfather says:

I agree with you Cop friends Erose about the 22 cal. round. As an example, Eve Carson in North Carolina was abducted from her apartment by two thugs and shot with a 22 and a sawed-off 410 shotgun. One of the rounds hit her shoulder and bounced down inside the body where it was found in the spleen during autopsy.

I think the .22 in this case is a rifle, ATG.

  47. Rose says:

@ATG. I was not referring to home schooling but to a “sheltered” upbringing,
and mean no negative connotations to sheltered but heightened vulnerability
and naivitee. Her primary social group appeared to be an evangelical church youth group
(marriage before intercourse, & unlikely be on birth control), a horse volunteer site, work
& a steady boyfriend in high school. She was also not on a “college track.”
Imo would be apt to see the best in others & be unaware of predator behaviors
& unsophisticated about intercourse consequences. We do not know if she was home
schooled due to religion, learning issues, an incompetent public school (doubtful),
    or need to work.

  48. Rose says:

Megli giving interviews debunking Probable Cause
quotes, saying LE distorted what she recounted
as to NL’s statements. If I were her, I’d run not walk to
a criminal lawyer before NL & CL hire the top 2 in that
town. She can retain him or her to represent the nonprofit
& write it off as a business expense & do what these other
missing involved do (which I don’t admire) & tap gofundme.

Agreed, but I always think that way- I would be on the phone with Macaluso ( if he has a clear license again)
