Missing Marine Wife Erin Corwin Breaking News: Husband Was NOT On Duty The Day She Disappeared

Posted by BOC Staff | Chris Lee,Erin Corwin,Jonathan Corwin,Missing and Endangered,Nichole Lee | Monday 21 July 2014 9:34 pm

Erin Corwin, 19 and approximately 2 weeks pregnant  when she disappeared on Saturday June 28th was last seen at about 10AM on Valle Vista and Ranch Rds, according to Police witness Michael Beasely and his sister Jeanette.   Corwin is the wife of Corporal Jonathan Corwin, stationed at The Marine Corp Air Ground Combat Center ( MCAGCC).

Beasely describes a young man in a compact red car having a brief conversation with her, and watched her get into the red vehicle after locking the passenger side door.  While Beasely said he could not state for certain it was Erin Corwin, it was definitely her car that was located about 100 yards into the desert from where he saw it on June 30th.   Beasely’s sister Jessica also recalled seeing the car  at some point that morning, but did not see the exchange with the man in the red car.  The Beasely’s gave this information to police at the scene while interviewing the water services worker who called detectives.

“When I came back a half hour later, just the (blue) car was sitting there. Next thing, I hear the weekend goes by and Monday morning the sheriffs are there looking for this girl because she ain’t home yet,” Beasley recalled.

Four search warrants have been released in the investigation into the disappearance of Erin Corwin, one of which has prompted and internet firestorm of friends and family members describing what they allege are direct accounts from Cpl. Corwin.   As the affidavits to the subpoenas for exigent warrants have been sealed, it is not clear why one of those search warrants was for the dark colored Jeep of fellow Marine Christopher Brandon Lee.   According to several online sleuthing sites claiming to have members that are in touch with John Corwin and in some cases investigators, Lee and Erin had a previous relationship that ended last Spring, but following her disappearance Cpl. Corwin located items  he says, on June 29th ,  prompted him to believe that the child Erin was carrying may not have been his.

In an exclusive development in the case,  through a source that agreed to speak to BOC on the strict condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak officially on the investigation, a review of Cpl. Corwin’s duty roster shows that he was NOT on duty Saturday June 28th ;  the morning after  he attended  a neighbor’s outside gathering that Erin Corwin left early.

Corwin told investigators that his wife had made plans to scope out sites to photograph during her Mother’s scheduled visit a few days later.  It is not clear why Corwin said that he last saw Erin at 7 AM but was not able to offer a description of her clothing or why it appeared  (Beasely) that she just headed toward the park at 10 AM.  Corwin told investigators he thought he had to wait 24 hours to report a missing person and reported her missing to a San Bernardino county deputy Sunday morning.  In an earlier interview,  Erin’s mother Loretta ( Lore) Heavilin said her son in law told her he did not report her missing because he thought she was staying overnight at the White Rock Ranch and Rehab – where Erin had adopted her horse Cassy.  Both Nichole and Christopher Lee adopted horses at White Rock as well.

Later that evening,  when Corwin’s commanding officer went to the couple’s home to check on Jon,  fellow members of his 3/11 India Battery  were called to Corwin’s residence after he was found inebriated and apparently destructive to the property to assist in it’s clean up and repair .   He was placed on PTAD orders  the same day.

Investigators will not confirm nor deny if they have developed a suspect or suspects in Erin’s disappearance,  but they have stated that neither Christopher Lee nor his wife Nichole are considered suspects or persons of interest in Corwin’s disappearance.

“Just because their names are in a search warrant or you received their names from some other source rather than the sheriff’s department; they’re not listed as suspects or persons of interest so we wouldn’t have a comment.”

 In what may be an unrelated event,  Lee was charged on July 4th with possession of a destructive device.   Lee secured a $25,000 bond  according to police records and is scheduled to be arraigned in September.   Lee was arrested during the execution of a search warrant at the White Rock Horse Rescue.

Chris Lee credit Facebook

Late this afternoon, within an hour of the San Bernardino County press release,  a portion of the previously sealed affidvavits surrounding warrants were released.  Although SBSD  has previously stated that Christopher Lee was not considered a suspect, he is absolutely implicated in the documents according to The Desert Sun.

“It is highly likely that Erin could have been harmed by an unknown firearm,” detectives wrote in court documents. “Sometime after Erin left with Lee, her phone was deactivated (turned off). Detectives believe if Erin was injured and left at an undisclosed location, she would not (be) able to call for help.”

 It  is unknown if what investigators swore is accurate, or perhaps were unaware of Beasely described as a  “…light haired,  skinny guy, small guy, not much hair, but sandy colored hair, shorter than 5’9″, who could have been a Marine…”  individual appeared to meet up with Erin Corwin at approximately 10 AM the morning of her disappearance.  But it is clear that if Mr. Beaseley’s account is accurate, it is not likely to fit the description of Chris Lee.

In the wake of the recent developments,  The Heavilin family returned to Tennessee over weekend.

    I think the .22 in this case is a rifle, ATG.

    There are longs and shorts, and different magazine configurations, but I was more referring to it’s firepower and difference in weaponry. Your not hiding a .22 rifle in your purse or your gun rack, lol.

    While home schooling is beneficial to many children, there are several levels of competency in the schooling process. Some parents are quite able to exceed the k-12 public school standards. Others cannot and the children may have issues with mental problems. I have experienced this is teaching music. I once worked with a home school group teaching music classes once a week. While that is not a good program for excellence, it was all that group could accomplish. The parental leadership was lacking and some of the children were mentally challenged.

    Did Erin fit that profile? Unless one could interview enough of her peers, it would or could not be determined.

    It is reported Erin worked at the local Tractor Supply store. My experience with Tractor supply is that they do not employe a large staff and the young ladies that often work the check-out area are those that barely were able to get a high school diploma and would be a drop-out in earlier times.

    We live in dangerous times because of the drift of general society away from good behavior. Some young people simply do not understand how they place themselves in danger by being ignorant of behavioral aberrations of their peers and those they meet in public places.

    After working through the beginning gunners material, the thought came to my mind that the wife of Mr. Lee may be more involved that we know.

    She could have worked to lure Erin to go on the photo site expedition for the purpose of getting Erin to a place pre-prepared and done the deed herself. Of course we cannot know from the information available at the present time.

    While an explosive device is possible, at this point I do not believe such a device plays any part in the disappearance.

  4. Rose says:

    I’m tired of reading media comments stating releasing investigation details is harmful (Probabke Cause
    affidavit & search warrants), when the
    facts released are sworn by LE to a Judge is just ridiculous. It is impossible to
    harm a case with those details, especially when the object has been
    interrogated, subject to a search warrant(s), and even arrested. A prosecutor can either
    cite the matters to bring charges, or not. If he does, defendant
    gets all this stuff anyway. After the searches have been executed, the search alone
    has alerted him, and further details make no difference to the destruction of evidence.
    (Personally in this guy’s case imo they didn’t search the garage on purpose, knowing
    it would give them a second bite of the apple on the ranch. Imo they didn’t just run into
    him there.) Imo releasing such details jogs potential’s memory or attention & contributes
    new details. The harmful investigation releases are the media interviews of potential witnesses who
    inevitably change details or nuances by adding, subtracting, or reinterpretation, allowing them
    to be discredited at trial. If the same had been released to public in Horman case the
    first summer (docs re searches of DDS & other Stepmom friends and so on wrt Stepmom), that case,
    and that custody dispute, would have been a whole lot less complicated.

    Well I need to read more to make make sense probably But Thank You Blink for a change of discussion

    I nearly just stayed on the White Rock ranch and rehab. What a interesting site. I am glad some of those horses have a kind and gentle home Wish I had worked with animals when I was young

    This seems real sad to me with Erin thinking they were going on a day trip to celebrate a new baby coming
    And Chris saying he hardly knew her or words to that effect Only kissed her no sex Worried about his wife
    And maybe he should be As his wife seems rather harsh
    I can’t figure out if they have already moved back to Alaska or not

    So I wonder if Erin just left the situation or if she is dead

    There are bullets designed exclusively for rifles and hand guns. In the case of the 22 cal. the bullet will fit and can be fired by either depending on the design of the guns mechanism. There are other calibers that have both hand guns and rifles that can use them.

    A 22 pistol can have a barrel length of 1 1/2″ or some competition pistols have a barrel length of 12″. The sort barrel version could be as small as 5 1/2″ in overall length while the long barrel version would be about 16″ in overall length. Both could be chambered to handle multiple lengths of std. 22 ammunition. The one exception is the magnum round and even some of those would be able to fire the Long Rifle cartridge.

    Hunting pistols usually have barrel lengths of eight to ten inches to improve accuracy and velocity. The longer the gasses can push on the bullet, the greater the velocity. The old time western revolvers often seen in movies had 8″ barrels and weigh four or five pounds when loaded.

    There are rifles made with fold up stocks so they take up less room length wise for storage and transportation in a back pack or gun case.

    Many states require a rifle or a shotgun to have a barrel length of 16″ to be legal. Thugs and crooks often shorten the barrels of shotguns, thus the term “sawed off shotgun”

    The U.S. Air Force designed a rifle to be carried in a fighter or bomber aircraft that was stored in three pieces that could be quickly assembled without tools. The barrel is a single piece, the main body including the mechanism for firing and clip receiver another and finally the stock. That one could be concealed in a ladies purse. At least some of the larger purses I have seen.

    According to BOC, another couple were said to have been invited on the hunting trip with Lee.

    Erin’s friend in TN received texts that Erin was going hunting with her bf to celebrate the pregnancy. (not clear what names or terms were used)

    Erin’s husband said she was going hunting, but for photo ops/camping spots in JT.

    Might someone other than Erin have sent the texts to deflect blame onto Lee? That would have to be someone very close.

    Are you saying that you think someone found out about her ‘affair’ and reacted strongly? Or when you speak of the ‘affair’ ticket being punched to cover up something that went wrong that LE is the one that did something wrong? Or lastly that the person doing the crime didn’t mean for death to occur and it is actually someone not connected with the ‘affair’ situation?

    thank you

    I am fearing and opining that the impetus for her disappearance is that someone found out about the affair and confronted her – to end in her death, and that person may not be CL, and the affair was a smokescreen to blame him.

    NL looks like she is much stronger than Erin. She probably would be able to overpower her….especially full of anger about an affair/pregnancy with her husband. MOO.

    Sad. Why do so many people make such poor choices?

  16. A Texas Grandfather says:

    If Erin is like many of the youth of her generation, they will text more often than talk on a phone. LE may have obtained those messages. If so, they probably know a lot more about the real interaction of the people involved.

    At some point, LE may release some of the information to the public. The warrants have already been released along with the information about what was seized during the warrant service.

    There could be several guns, both rifles and hand guns that are yet to be found. Large caliber rounds for hand guns are three to four times as expensive as 22 cal. rounds. Many people have a 22 cal. hand gun for the express purpose of keeping their shooting skills sharp without spending the money for the more expensive rounds. With the current ammunition shortage, even 22 cal. is hard to find.

    This may not be the case if the Marine base PX stocked ammunition.

    Not surprised Malty-
    I agree that a woman that went home the night before early suffering from “nausea” is not looking to hike in the wee hours- to the best of my knowledge, she was 2 weeks-ish pregnant on June 28th.

  21. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Your welcome Malty. I began shooting at age nine with a single shot 22 cal. J.C. Higgins rifle purchased from Sears for $12.95. Put it on layaway and paid it out a little at a time from funds earned and saved. It cost a penny each for a single regular round. Longs and Long Rifle rounds were unknown at the time. The magnum round is a very recent development.

    If the purpose of the Saturday morning activities of Erin was to find locations for photos and her husband was not on duty that day, why would he not go with her? Any man that allows a person to knowingly go alone into desert country is not thinking very well. Makes me question just how many knew about the affair.

    Suppose the husband found out and threw her out of the house so in anger she decided to meet her paramour. That could explain the drunken condition his buddies found along with the destruction of things in the home.

  23. Alabaster primrose says:

    So what is your theory. I do apologize if you put it already. I live here in 29 and have been following the case and here is what I think happens:

    Some fight or argument at some point Friday night. Or maybe something that has been in the works for a bit between to scorned spouses (Jon and Nichole), but whatever it was, Erin never left base alive after Friday night.

    Nicole as the person seen at 10 am on Sat with Jon by the witness. Chris is the pawn. Which is why Jon gave the park as where Erin was going and why Chris said that’s where he was going (Probably Nichole’s suggestion that’s he go there that day).

    Nicole being overheard fussing at Chris may not have been so much about him not keeping his stories straight but in doing so it put the focus more on her. Which, she has more to hide.

    Also, there are more things that jumped out but I didn’t see them here so I don’t want to post yet. But the is what I think.

  24. Scout says:

    @malty-The rumor started because she was pregnant and had a miscarriage. She has a baby registry (with nothing on it) that it seems she made with the first pregnancy before she miscarried. So people are thinking she was further along with her current baby but they are mistaken.

    It was the drought. And heat that gives me pause To really wonder about a day trip
    Did she have water and food. Sunscreen packed ice or anything the witness doesn’t say the woman he saw had

  26. Malty says:

    And ATG
    What do people hunt in the desert in the heat Where the is no brush Or much of anything don’t animals go near water

  27. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Malty

    There is quite a bit more animal life in the desert areas than most people know. Yes, the desert area in the 29 Palms area appears to have little vegetation and would not support a lot of animal life.

    The animal food chain depends on those animals that can forage on the small amount of plants found and insects too. Large animals who are often omnivorous survive by eating smaller animals along with some plants and insects.

    Very few animals would be out and about during the mid-day heat. They would feed early in the day and late in the day. Only the human would be out and about where they could have protective clothing and sufficient water.

    I have visited the California desert areas and at one time spent one morning exploring in Death Valley. By noon, it gets very uncomfortable. I have put my hand in Furnace creek and found the temperature to be about 125 degrees F. at 9:00 A,M..

    The whole concept of going hiking looking for photo sites or camp sites after 10:00 A.M. flies in the face of common sense. The stories that Erin did such a thing do not peg my truth meter.

    Most of my early life, I listened to female members of my family talk about young people and in particular young women who had been kept in a family controlled situation that had, to use their term “Gone Wild” after leaving the family. That actually was a descriptive term that meant the person had ditched the mores of the times and chosen to act in a different manner.

    You have to know that my mother was born in the last decade of the 19th century. Her peer group would include people of that decade and the first of the 20th century plus some from the second decade. Their outlook on society was so constrained compared to what we see today, that they would probably think the whole world had “Gone Wild”.

    I believe that Erin decided to ditch the mores of her family and do something different with her life. However, as are most youth who do that, she was very ill equipped to handle situations new to her. She probably made some good choices and some that were not so good. Good choices produce good results and poor choices can lead to situations that are life changing in a negative way. In this case, it may have cost her life.

  28. Rose says:

    @ATG That’s why I suggest the special site
    in a 2 hr drive is at higher elevations
    with different vegetation where a simple push would work.

    What stands out to me as suspicious are the time frames given by JC & CL, as in EC was last seen at by JC at 7:00am. supposedly leaving to go to JTNP & CL stating he was in JTNP at 7:30am. AND JC saying EC ( or himself saying) said she’d be home at 4:00pm. and CL stating he was home by 4:00pm. Too coincidental for my liking. Neighbors having an affair would most likely NEVER leave/arrive at their respective homes close in time, IMO. Another is the wording used….I’m sure I read the word “hunting” as in “hunting” for a place to hike, picnic, take pics,etc… related to JC’s account when first reporting EC missing and her reason for going to the park, but now when I try and find the original details I can’t find them….I see the word “scoping” instead….also “celebrating or celebrate” in relation to a pregnancy which is NOT related to either EC or CL’s spouse is odd wording to use UNLESS it’s being used sarcastically by the USER which does not translate in text form or online AT ALL…..When I first heard the description of the “red” car driver it fits JC to a T!

  30. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Rose

    I spent some time looking at the area with Google Earth while we were waiting for Blink to get the article ready. The elevation of the desert floor areas are between 2,000 and 3,000 Ft. MSL. Yucca Valley is at 3,000 ft. Some of the mountain upthrusts reach another 3,000 ft.

    Roads in the peak areas are not frequent. The local area includes San Bernardino and Riverside counties.It is about 100 miles along hwy 62 to the West side of the Colorado river at Earp.

    In addition, there is the Amboy crater just West of Amboy on the Old National Trail Highway. This crater actually abuts the NE property line of the Marine Corps training base, a driving distance of about 55 miles on a good road. The Pisgah Crater is another 40 miles West of Amboy and it too abuts the property line on the North of the training base. Both craters could be a perfect place to place a body so that it might never be found. I would think that training materials would show these craters on maps.

  31. Rose says:

    IIRC some quotes of LE said one of the two Marine’s storylines for Sat. did not check out. To me, that means JC’s stories about his whereabouts were validated tho we don’t know that tale.
    I have come to the thought the person driving & parking EC’s car about 10 am was NL, who
    when her husband arrived got out & joined him. She has the
    hair that could make a ponytail and wears caps. It makes no sense if EC were going on an outing with
    CL that she would go to JTree alone, spend 2.5 hours, & return to meet him just to go back out there again.
    And if she did not do that, where did the 3 hours go? I think she was taken care of between 7-10 am & NL drove her car back. My suspicion is surveillance tape shows the jeep leaving very early with 2 passengers. And retufning with two passengers shortly after10.

    Rose- that was not an LE quote, it was a rumor. To my knowledge based on my sources, JC has never had an official interview by SBSD. By official, I refer to the FBI protocol of a targeted subject interview which can only occur when other interviews and facts have been collected to develop that “roadmap” so to speak. I believe LE has confirmed Lee was in JTNP with his phone on, June 28th, leaving base at 7:30AM. The case Agent (Trevis) alluded to the fact that key witness interviews have not yet occurred by design.
    In a mp case, I don’t agree with that philosophy whatsoever, but I do understand it- LE who is inexperienced in a high profile mp case does not adapt it’s thinking or technique from “we only have one shot, if this turns into an interview/interrogation we know JAG will shut it down from the word miranda.

    Additionally, I have known SBSD to be very autonomous from the DA. What I mean by that is that in general in a high profile case that they know is of major public interest, the DA needs to be consulted and on the ground in every move to preserve a successful prosecution in the case ( a la Horman, although latent) add in the issue of active military here.. So we have the SAR leading the investigation based on early theory which produced no evidence, in fact, it produced a credible witness of a red car being driven by someone matching JC description, definitely not CL. That intel was withheld from some of it’s own investigators in an active SAR mission, wth?

    Corwin moved to Twentynine Palms last fall when her husband of two years, a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps, was moved from a base in Japan, she said.

    Corwin’s sister-in-law described the couple as having a charmed life together. They had only been living for a few months — Corwin lived with her parents in her hometown of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, while her husband was overseas — and the two talked about each other often — and effusively.

    “They’re still in this little bubble,” she said.
    http://blog.pe.com/breaking-news/2014/07/02/twentynine-palms-missing-womans-vehicle-found/

    This is one of the first articles I read on this case. Even though they married when Erin was seventeen they didn’t live together until last fall according to this .

    Correct. Erin lived with her parents in TN until just before JC returned from Japan. He was also in field ops training shortly thereafter. They were really only living together for a few months.

  33. GraceintheHills says:

    Rose, I’m with you on this one. I think SBCSB developed a suspect (or two) after looking at base surveillance tapes, cell phone pings, cell phone records, tire tracks, footwear impressions, lack of alibi/corroboration, witness/suspects’ remarks to others, etc. I strongly suspect JC was ruled out by various means very early in the investigation based on comments posted by a relative on FB. As LE has stated they are looking for the crime scene at this point and have been searching JT and the basin. JMO.

    Regarding information being withheld from another investigator – we don’t if the name was withheld or if that particular investigator didn’t want to reveal what he knew to the media. Also, in my experience working with a very large sheriff’s dept., in high profile cases one can see an occasional disconnect between those who are functioning as spokesperson’s and those in the field. I suspect this investigation has been very organized otherwise.

  34. Rose says:

    @Blink. TY for teaching & clarifying.

    Thank you Rose :)

  35. Rose says:

    @Blink.
    What do you do with EC then leaving her CL apptmt early after only a couple hours?
    Why contact husband to rendevous &!drive off with him, parked
    outside base when she could’ve just met him at home?
    Her reaction to seeing husband in a clone vehicle of CL?
    And what do you do with Beasley’s sister saying she’d seen the Blue there
    on previous occasions, parking in the Rear of the Base?
    Personally I think CL is within the description. If JC weren’t much slighter, CL would be
    fine. Lot of his 5’9″ (within Beasley’s description) is waist down. And while
    he is pudgey, he’s not a muscular hulk. His hair is also within
    possibility–not black nor blonde. Close cut, probably no clear view
    of degree of brown.

    I don’t think Jessica said that- unless someone else can check me on it- I believe she was saying in reference to having seen the same vehicle more than once that day in that location.

    If Beasely was influenced by coverage, I would say you could be right- but then there is the issue of him not being tied in any way to a red sedan.

    The ranch owner, Megli, said in a news article that Law Enforcement twisted her words in the affidavit regarding NL’s comments. A quote from the article and the article link below:

    “It was this same affidavit that included comments by Megli, which cast suspicion on the Lee couple. According to the affidavit, Megli told detectives that:

    • Nichole Lee said she was concerned her husband did not have an alibi and would “not be able to keep his lies straight.”

    • Nichole Lee said that detectives did not have a case “without a body,” and that “detectives would never find the body.”

    • And that police had “missed something” while searching Lee’s apartment because they did not search the garage.

    When interviewed by The Desert Sun on Friday, Megli said the first two statements were misconstrued by detectives who wrote the affidavit. Nichole Lee made these statements while chatting casually at the horse ranch, discussing the Corwin disappearance and similar mysteries, comparing them to the clichès of television crime drama.

    Megli said Nichole Lee was worried her husband would accidentally incriminate himself — even if he hadn’t done anything wrong — if he was grilled by detectives.

    Finally, Megli insisted that Nichole Lee never said police “missed something” in the garage, but actually remarked that police had simply not searched the garage at all. Nichole Lee was thankful police skipped the garage because the couple had packed their belongings in preparation to move out of the apartment, and deputies would have torn through the packaging during the search.

    There was no conversation about a clue being missed, Megli said.

    “I never said that,” Megli said Friday. “If I would have heard that there was ‘something’ in the garage, don’t you think I would have called the police?”

    It is unclear if the sheriff’s department actually searched the Lees’ garage or not. The search warrant for the apartment did give deputies authority to search the garage.

    The sheriff’s department has repeatedly declined to comment on the search warrants or the contents of the affidavit.”

    hmm Interesting. I didn’t think the wife would be that dumb to say the things detectives said she did to Megli.

    “BEASLEY: Yeah, yeah, it was a dark-colored ball cap. I should say it was a light blue or dark blue with the green on it. You know, from, again, ”

    Perhaps he had a word on NL’s cap (Green Bay) in his impressionistic mindbank.

    The transcript suggests someone other than jvm has previously asked Beasley if it could be another woman. He confirms all he is sure of is it is her car.

    “…how can you be so sure it is this young woman that you saw?

    BEASLEY: Yeah, I never – I`ve never have and never could say that for certain this was Erin. …

    until the following Monday morning. You know, and I seen the picture of her husband on there. Now, a very well possibly it could have been another woman in that vehicle. It – that I found out. It very well may not have even been her. But I mean …

    VELEZ-MITCHELL: So in other words what you`re saying is that it wasn`t just the fact that you saw her, this woman with the dark glasses”

    I can’t find a Jessica quote of seeing the car previously, so I must’ve stopped reading at the word “before” used in all the stories referencing her same-day sightings, apologies.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Hi Scout, imo, suspicion was cast on CL almost immediately when LE became aware that EC texted her friend in Tenn. telling her that she (EC) and CL were going to JT or some other undisclosed spot that morning to celebrate and hunt. Those texts from EC pointed LE directly at CL. As LE continued to work the case they found EC’s car and nearby tire tracks similar to CL’s jeep, but only one set of footprints leading from EC’s car to the jeep’s wheel imprints. Was he involved? Don’t know. Was JC involved? It’s possible, but I seriously doubt it given the circumstances so far. Were all three involved? Not a chance.
    JMO, nothing more.
    As far as witnesses saying really “dumb’ things to other potential witnesses: unfortunately it happens a lot. Worst yet is when you have good witness and that witness decides to tell the media his/her “story.” You can sometimes see that story morph over time and then voila! you find your witness may have lost some credibility.
    Just hope this case is solved soon and Erin is found and returned to the people who love her.
    Grace, I agree, but that means that one is assuming that Erin sent those texts. Like you, I am a facts person, I would need the raw analysis on that.
    What’s this on a closed facebook–rumors of a female body found near the ranch?
    I can see Erin going riding after her JT outing, with either male.
    it sounds like the lee’s garage was already full of packed boxes on the day the warrants were executed, which is 7/1/14. so for me, that sounds like they had packed and planned for alaska well in advance of erin’s disappearance.
    though it does seem that there was some sort of interest in erin on cl’s behalf, the timing of which i’m not sure makes sense. was erin living on base this spring and is that when the relationship went down? so that happened as soon as she moved in on base with her husband?
  42. Scout says:
    @Grace-
    That was a quote from the article about investigators becoming suspicious from NL’s statements. Her statements to Megli (whether they twisted her words or not) just added fuel to the investigators fire. No doubt EC’s friend’s statements about the affair and probably EC’s cell phone records to CL cast the most suspicion on CL. Would be interesting to know if CL had his phone on the whole day or if he conveniently took the battery out for a few hours that day.
    I think the entire site you referenced is a parody fun site. The tip off to me was the lead line about the commanding general and then the follow on with the base commander being a major. Compared to the Army, the Marines have few Generals and they would not be directly running a training base.
    In reality, somewhere in my search of the twenty-nine palms area I did find that NCIS has an office on the base. This means a JAG investigation of the two marines and possibly some others.
  44. Rose says:
    @ATG. yes, I used the word parody. The tip
    off was N Korea taking over the Eastern seaboard.
    It’s a site I bet enlisted men enjoy.
  45. Rose says:
    @Scout. While Megli recast what she told police as just general talk with NL about the outcomes of these general types of cases, the question remains why NL would generally say they won’t find a body in a missing person’s situation such as this? Far easier & more charitable to say I’m sure she just ran away, took a breather due to stress
    in her personal life (referring to miscarriage, conflict with JC over affair, etc).
    The assumption a MP is dead is a big leap for an uninvolved near neighbor to make
    speculatively. Megli is very close to CL who hauled her manure & fixed her fences and imo would
    have not seen the affair if they’d acted out on her front porch.
  46. GeorgiaDad says:
    The more I read, the more confused I become. This couple had only lived together a few months (The rest of the time she was at home with her parents). Yet, in just a few months, she mangaed to have an affair, break it off, and then restart the affair, while becoming pregnant twice; and yet she and her husband are described as young love-birds infatuated with each other.
    One of the problems here seems to be a romanticized idea of military marriage – I have seen it in my own extended family. I young man joins the service, but before going off to camp, marries his girlfriend (usually a rushed wedding). The young couple dreams of travelling the world together living in military housing living in exotic places. Reality kicks in, the bride stays home with mom and dad while her heroic husband is off at camp, or overseas where married housing is no available or appropriate, and things fall apart rapidly, often with affairs by both partners — I don’t want to be critical of those who serve, but many enter with false expectations. Not unexpected in a society where an 18 year old is competent to fight in the military, but not mature enough to drink a beer.
    In this case, I doubt the husband or the boyfriend had the resources or contacts to order a hit. If the husband were responsible, I think a violent rage incident (with accompanying physical evidence) would be the cause.
    To me, the secret rondezvous, seems affair related. Or at least EC thought she was meeting up with CL. Unfortunately, the evidence doesn’t mesh well with my gut instinct. Maybe I have been overly influenced by what appears to have happened in the Heather Elvis case.
    LE’s strategy suggests they know more than they have let on. They have seemed more interested in preserving evidence than locating a potentially living missing person. I get the feeling that they have assumed that they are looking for a corpse and preserving evidence in a murder investigation from very early on.
  47. Malty says:
    I don’t have a reason to think this way but the text-email to Erin’s friend in Tn seems a little off in this case
    A day trip to celebrate being PG with CL in the desert. Why not a dinner in some nice place Makes me wonder about this friend
  48. erose says:
    Malty, Or someone already had her phone and texted for her. I wonder if the friend in TN thought the text sounded (read) *off*.
  49. N. Cahela says:
    I live in Alabama and I saw a girl today that looked so much like Erin that it stopped me in my tracks. I truly don’t believe it was her, this girl had much longer hair (that was not extensions) and she got into a car with local plates. The girl I saw didn’t appear to be under any distress and seemed very familiar with her surroundings.She was however wearing a dress that was almost identical to one Erin had on in a picture with Jon that I believe was on her fb page.
    Anyway, seeing that young girl that favored her so much face to face, made me realize just how vulnerable she probably was. I know at 19, I thought I was invincible and that I knew everything when in fact it’s a miracle that my friends and I survived a lot of situations we got ourselves into. Add to that the sheltered life that Erin supposedly lived, she was probably a “sitting duck” to anyone that wanted to take advantage of her or to cause her harm. So praying, this is not the case and that she will be home soon.
