it is understandable…I just didn’t know…I also didn’t see that there as a tip that led police to look in walnut creek park…used to swim there a lot in early2000s…this is complex …please forgive my inability to understand all this as quickly as some

@leslie. the Sgt sis not quit for the day but moved
on to predetermined search targets in the vicinity.
the abandoned property & creek bed were not random.
The tips leading to predetermined site selections planned to
be up next included logs of phone calls with such things as
Jesse’s frequent haunts over the years, as well as vulture
sightings on the days in question. These are the types of tips
    Lingo had asked for.

I think Jesse was informed, caught by surprise,
by that TV interview. One reason a black male
sat down for it, and the Gid reference, while genuine,
was scripted for Jesse, as were enough details to
convince Jesse the find was genuine.

And vultures don’t eat clothes. If they’re not torn,
    a human vulture removed them.

Of course- I have a source that swears that clothing items of hannah’s were found during the second search and prompted the current charge.

I am deciding how I want to address the whole decompositional event issue again, in this case as I did somewhat in Morgan’s. It has to do with following the carrion/blow fly cycle as it relates to external wounding and floabt- other predation activity.

I will ruminate how to do that tactfully.

  6. A Texas Grandfather says:

The disposal of both girls in a rural area that JM was familiar with is not surprising. That is why, in an lightly populated area, LE should make an appeal to land owners to immediately check their land and if they know of adjacent properties where the owner is absent, to check those too. This request should be repeated daily in all the local media with a call-in line dedicated to gathering those reports.

I suppose the neighbors, who witnessed the vultures and smelled a bad odor thought it was a deer or another animal, just didn’t have enough curiosity to go and look. That is surprising to me in a rural area where people look after themselves and others.

I live in a rural area with terrain very similar to where both young women were found. It is often so quiet that one can hear a set of tires making road noises for close to two miles. Large vehicles such as heavy trucks or smaller ones with loud exhaust systems can be heard as they move along the area roadways so accurately that one knows exactly where they are located. The key to that is one has to pay attention.

Coy Barefoot article “Where Hannah Was Found” which shows a google street view photo of the property at 3193 Old Lynchberg Rd – the location where Hannah’s remains were found. A man had looked around the home on Oct 6th after seeing a flurry of birds (and knowing the home was vacant) but left as he felt strange like he was trespassing. He called the tip in to Law Enforcement.

Yes, it was a definite tip, although I see folks are not thrilled at my title. I never say it unless it can be verified.

  8. LCville says:

I assume it will take time for us to get answers (if ever) but I just keep going back to how Hannah’s death could have been prevented. We had a very high profile case with Morgan Harrington where the victim needed a ride and was seen hitchhiking – so many reactions about how no one hitchhikes anymore and lots of VERY LOGICAL theories that would flow from there as to whether some kind of cab or other driver was involved. Location of body suggests local killer familiar with the area…and yet what we have heard so far suggests LE had not looked at cab drivers or at least it seems JLM specifically in this case?

Blink I know you have said that jurisdictions, especially smaller ones are very resource limited but given how high profile this is and how seemingly non-resource intensive it would have been to at the very least obtain a list of cab drivers on duty in the area that night…I just can’t wrap my head around this one. I get also that miscommunication and/or turf battles between state and local authorities could have played a role but do we know whether either agency looked closely at cab drivers? Doesn’t seem like that’s the case but maybe that info simply hasn’t been released.

Then there’s the issue of folks around town (and I am not talking about close associates and family of JLM but rather bouncers, bar tenders, others who were aware of JLM and his behavior) who are now coming out and saying things about his sketchiness and even suspicions they had harbored as to his involvement in Morgans case. I hate to say it but I do actually hope that these people never called in a tip (hopefully this is a teaching moment for members of the community moving forward) as I don’t want to believe JLM was on LE’s radar prior to Hannah’s disappearance.

This weekend is for remembering Hannah but I just can’t help but be angry and want answers on this front.

Actually LCville- regardless of size and resources ( and VSP has excellent resources) a list of cabbies or other transportation providers is a very easy investigative “get”.

  9. LCville says:

To my previous post, I suppose we don’t know whether JLM was actually on duty the night Morgan disappeared so that would in all fairness add a level of complexity…

  10. kimberly says:

    Blink,
I’m curious if you have found any significance to the September/October time frame of both Hannah and Morgan.
Meaning, is there something traumatic or celebratory for JLM to
commit the crimes he has around this particular time of year?

Not specifically in terms of some sort of ritualistic date importance. I think it just simply has to do with victim preference and access.

Hi Redrock. I understand your frustration. Blink is right…this was an evil act, but God was there with Hannah.

God exists where time and space do not. What seems like months or years to us, is but a flash of a moment to Him. I found a snip from a blog, and I like how it uses scripture to explain God’s time vs. man:

In John 7:6, Jesus says to his half-brothers who advised Him to go up to the Feast of Booths and do some miracles to make Himself known, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune.” Jesus was drawing a contrast between how He lived in view of God’s time versus how His brothers lived their lives. I want to develop the thought:

Since life is short and eternity is forever, live by God’s time, not by man’s time.

I understand this is a touchy subject and difficult to embrace. Truly, this is a journey of patience and faith. When we didn’t know where Hannah was, God did.

I pray this brings some comfort, especially to Hannah’s precious family. Prayers are in short supply….we need to uplift this family, and many others known and unknown to us.

Posting in peace and love. xo

  12. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Redrock

I am a very spiritual person who believes in a higher power whom we call GOD. I believe that he is the creator of the universe. As the creator, it is his design and as a part of that design we are given free will to choose and act. These acts can be for good or evil. This does not mean that GOD directly affects everything on our planet. We as humans must learn good choices for the benefit of society as we progress towards perfection. This means there are many choices made by individuals that are not good or simple evil.

I also believe that each of us has an inner connection to GOD where he can lead us if we are listening and trying to be good people. This is how the search party was lead to find Hannah outside their assigned area. The party was not satisfied with the results and just why that was will likely never be known. We have to take it on faith that all these things we do not understand actually happen for a reason. I believe occurs to teach us lessons in better behavior.

There should be much that we as a people should learn from this series of losses of young women in Virginia to a person or persons who made evil choices. The good that evil produces usually takes a while to understand and make itself manifest. This will include changes to how LE does activities relating to abductions, the behavior or young women in a new environment and the public response in general to people like JM who prey on others in order to achieve their evil desires. By public response, I mean such things as business owners demanding proper behavior on their properties in a way that helps to prevent someone from harming another.

I give you this to consider as a part of the love for one another and those who read and post.

Remember the infamous Casey Anthony? They video taped her reaction to remains found both in that river (which were a dog’s in the end), and her reaction to human remains being found in the woods near her home. When the remains in the water were found her reaction (incredibly) was that LE was not looking in the right area or something like that. When she was told of the human remains near her home she doubled over and started to breath heavily. Likely LE needed to see if Matthews displayed the same type of behavior, so witnesses and video were most likely in place at the time.

That’s interesting! Perhaps the tip will be confirmed when the investigation of the crime scene is complete. This individual will be a key witness, for sure, if the tip is confirmed to be a valuable lead.

I believe a section of Old Lynchburg Road is closed, (I think at least a couple closures are at OL Rd & Plank Rd; another at OL Rd & Red Hill Rd, IIRC), at various intersections. I don’t believe we’re seeing the actual site of Hannah’s remains, in our google map searches. It seems more plausible LE is being ambiguous to preserve the exact location, to collect evidence without outside interference from media, public, etc.

The buildings are churches and a cemetery, I believe.

Time of year and ritualistic, can’t be ruled out, either. Possible? Yes. Definitely? One can never tell…..but the time of year is relative to the Equinox and Halloween. Certain times of year have more evil practices than others.

Something to consider, if you can keep an open mind:

http://tinyurl.com/lczzzx3 <— just one of many resources, if you choose to google 'spiritual warfare' along with 'demonic activities'

I think someone here believed I'm off my rocker, but there is good and evil. Know thy enemy. Steal. Kill. Destory. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. – John 10:10.

4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. – 1 John 4:4

Some will believe this and some won't. From personal experiences, one cannot rule out the time of year and ritualistic intentions, are possibilities.

Again, JMHO…and posted in the Spirit of peace <3

That tip, if called in as stated on Oct. 6th, was tied to a specific address so I am very surprised it was almost an afterthought for the deputy to search that property near the end of the search.

They may not have been told why they were assigned the area- I do not have any info that the deputy was not forthright- but it was a definite tip- I can confirm that personally.

Here everyday, waiting for something to happen, Holly, Kyron, so many others. Thank you so very much for all the time you spend helping to educate your followers about these crimes. We end up learning from others as well, as you have some amazingly talented and hard working posters who LOVE to research! I thank them, feeling as I have known them for years (ATG, Mom3, Rose, so many others…). I will continue to follow you, just HAD to say thank you.
ATG: I respect you and your beliefs, you should respect others, as not all people believe in organized religion or a god. My children have been in spirituality classes since age 2 where they learn about ALL the WORLDS religions and gods and the texts that go with them. We have been in 6 different ‘places of worship’ and study those styles of worship before we enter, respectfully. I do this for them so they understand how different everyone really is, and how their BELIEFS are just a small part of who they are. And that RESPECT for differences in all ways of life, race, spirituality, is KEY. I have a rich life, filled with family, friends, colleagues, nature and music. ‘Everything happens for a reason’ has nothing to do with god. It’s just a statement. Like, it is what it is. I believe Morgan’s spirit (and let’s credit them as investigators to sometimes GO off the grid) led the searchers to Hannah.
Thanks again BOC, Blink and all dogged posters. ‘spoonful of sugar not working today’

Ragdoll, what a beautiful way to express how God works; not always in our (man’s) idea of timeliness. But, I, too, believe God was with Hannah and will be always. It was Him, who eventually led this officer to Hannah.

I went to bed early last night, praying for Hannah to be found. God has surely heard many other prayers for her, and has answered them, in His time.

  25. mosaic says:

Persistence has paid off for law enforcement. I’m in awe of how the relentless determination of the police officers, volunteers and search-n-rescue professionals led to the discovery of Hannah’s remains. It’s truly remarkable that she was found.

  26. Lyndsay says:

What do we know of the history of the specific place where Hannah was found? Your historic legacy theory has me hooked. I know Monticello is down the road, but IMO if he wanted her to be found on Monticello, he would have put her there. I’ve been searching for more info on Walnut Creek Park and can’t find much on its history, plus she was found a mile away from the park, not actually in it. So do we have an address or know more about the ownership history of the abandoned property?

  27. mosaic says:

I’m haunted by Gil Harrington’s words after the recovery of her daughter Morgan. She held her daughter’s skull in her hands and looked into the sockets of her cranium. That most loving and profound gesture has stayed with me all these years. A mother who wanted to hold her daughter one more time. Absolutely heartbreaking.

  28. Belsma says:

I am humbled. I am so proud of all of the searchers who spent countless hours looking for Hannah and all of the lost. I am especially proud of Chesterfield for forging on and not giving up because they had a hunch or what they felt God wanted them to do. I have lived here most of my life and the men and woman of the Sheriffs office make me more proud to be a resident.
Hannah, oh, dear Hannah. I am so sorry this has happened to you and your family and friends. I think the entire commonwealth sits with heavy hearts, some relief, but sad and confused as to why and how this happened. Then our grieving for someone we never have met will turn to anger. We will go through the motions, not like your parents, but we will go through them.
Thanks B for all of your amazing skills and input. Sorry I get impatient with the moderation thing. :)

First & foremost, my deepest sympathies to Hannah’s parents, brother, family and friends. Also, to the parents of the other missing and deceased girls and to the Harrington’s. I am a single mother of 2 young ladies who were excited about life, growing up, going to concerts, parties, wearing the current fashion, furthering their education, meeting new friends and so excited about life and the future. I still have my daughters. I cannot imagine the pain and nightmare these parents live with. (To this day, my mother suffers and is sad and not the same person from brother’s death almost 20 years ago. It still feels like yesterday. I was am forever changed. The brightness is extinguished. You exist..) so I was in 2 minds to voice how I felt about the biblical posts. They brought no comfort, just more loss… I know you were coming from a good place, but please think before saying some things…

I am offended by the grandfather from Texas post. If God works by us learning from a series of losses, “the behaviour of young women in a new environment” (whether meant positively or negatively) — I, nor my daughters learn nothing from the posting. I believe in a higher power but this is not the time for preaching from a bible. I don’t relate either to the post from Ragdoll regarding “time” What kind of God is this that vultures are tearing at flesh – eternity is no consolation for losing a child. My brother was killed at 25. Parents should not bury their children whose lives were taken cruelly. I am not blaming God and the subject is touchy. I do not condone the teaching of this being a lesson. It’s too raw and does not give any comfort at a time like this. It actually brings out the rawest emotions. I respect you and what you believe in, but to me it brings no comfort :: the “lesson” is negative and confusing. It

It’s so sad and the pain. Please I don’t want to debate this further, and I respect you have a right to your beliefs and commenting. Peace and Love.

Thank you to the police, community and out of towners who tirelessly searched. The bloggers for giving hope – this to me is inherently the “lesson” and spirituality which I embrace and gives me hope to carry on. Blessings always

Blink- so I read above that you don’t think that there is any significance to the September/October time frame with Hannah and Morgan. I was curious to your thoughts on the football season theory some have said here and other places as well. Meaning JLM was kicked out of a Liberty on October 17th and that is the same day as Morgans disappearance. I can’t remember the date he left or was accused at CNU. Do you think this is what motivates him at all is what I’m trying to ask. I would also like to thank you for always reporting the facts as you know them. I have seen so many news sources who are already posting things that are not true. For example… a few news sites are imying that because JLM was kicked out of a Liberty he must have been guilty and LPD messed up etc. Now I think he was guilty, but my opinion doesn’t really matter. What they’re forgetting is ANYONE caught having any type of sexual relationship at Liberty will immediately be expelled since it’s a Christian University.
I am keeping the Graham’s and Harrington’s in my thoughts and prayers as well as their friends and family. I hope that Alexis Murphy’s family and anyone else missing a loved one will also get some closure and some answers too. May God Bless Them All!!! This is such a tragedy.

  31. Lisa Smith says:

Kimberly- I had the same question about dates. Clearly I’m not an expert, but I find it more than coincidental that JLM was accused of sexual assault at LU on October 17, 2002 and that is the exact date Morgan went missing. I truly believe he blames women for ruining his football/college career as well as ruining his reputation. Obviously this is just my opinion.

BLINK- sorry for the caps, but I have chills right now. I just read the article by Coy Barefoot that was in link above. Please help me with this. I remember reading somewhere a long time ago about that house and it being an assisted living facility. I don’t remember if it was in the search for Alexis Murphy comments or where, but I specifically remember someone saying something like oh no that house is empty now and it says it was a nursing home, but couldn’t be because it only has 3 bedrooms. AM I CRAZY??? Am I confusing it with another site and/or house? My alarm bells are ringing I know I read somewhere about this place before, but can’t come up with the connection. I’m pretty sure it was about Randy Allen Taylor though.

  32. Olivia says:

Personally, I feel SO grateful for the dedication and work of so many people in the search, both professionals and volunteers. If any of you are reading, you are amazing! I wish this action had been taken after Morgan went missing but some lessons are not learned right away. Obviously, Longo is someone with a powerful sense of responsibility to the people he is charged with protecting.

On another note, I spoke with someone who said that a resident in the Old Lynchburg Road area is a friend of hers–he told police on Friday or Saturday that there was an old trail nearby leading to an abandoned house and the very old foundations of other houses or log cabins. At that point the police began to search down there. I do not know if he is the person who noticed the smell.

I still wonder if Matthew truly was working alone. Perhaps HE is the person who re-started the fire in the Red Hill area back on the night Morgan’s remains were found? So odd that Randy Allen Taylor (Alexis Murphy’s murderer) was out 29 South too, only another 10 miles or so from Red Hill Road. No connection whatsoever? I mean, RAT moved out there only a few years ago so it’s quite possible that they did not know each other or cross paths.

LCville- Hello- I understand and share yr frustration.

IIRC a number of taxi drivers were interviewed- just not sure how many

IDK if LE systematically interviewed via a list- if so certainly not all- IIRC it was those who were known to have had pick ups /calls near the arena- 7-11 etc

It seems Lj was not- so I suppose his log sheet or other did not reflect he was “on the job” near that area.-

It is as Gil always said- He was hiding in plain sight
Thankfully those days are over-sadly it came only after Hannah fell victim

  34. Mom3.0 says:

    Warning Graphic-

    No disrespect intended

It is my understanding that it had rained a couple of times last week- which would have suspended all scavengers carrion for a time- if the remains were placed in a dry creek bed- the remains could have shifted with water- which could have added in clothing removal

animals other than vultures also could have shifted the remains before the vultures came-

Vultures can do their work quite fast- If the neighbors only noticed them a day ago-and again for a second day- then it seems to me other factors could have played a part in the condition of the remains

As to yr source Blink- since Morgans shirt was seemingly kept- could it be that Hannah’s was too and that is what yr source was speaking IRT? what of Hannahs socks and shoes- Morgans were missing…

Did the deputy hint that the pants were on the remains or that they were not torn- if not then it is hard to say what they could mean

Respectfully, I don’t really get the logic behind ‘God leading the searchers to Hannah’. There was already a tip in place and I find it insulting to the searchers who worked tirelessly to find her. And why hasn’t God lead anyone to Alexis’ body? Was Hannah more important? I don’t like that I know I’m going to get some silly answer about that but that’s what is insinuated. I’m sure this can’t make Alexis’ family feel too good- that people are praising the Jesus for helping God lead them Hannah while Alexis is still gone.

I’m agnostic and much of the time the fluffy God talk just sounds a little silly/loony. I’m sure Hannah would much rather be home here on earth safe and happy with her family than being raped and murdered by a monster.

    Rant. Over.

    Jane Banks

Good for you that you have exposed your children to various religions of the world. One of the most interesting classes I ever had in Sunday School was a study of the religions of the world lead by a fireman who thought it important that youth learn more than just the Christian religion. He started the class with ten and after two years there were forty.

For over twenty years my wife and I hosted a study group in our home where we studied religions and philosophy. During that period we had over three hundred that joined us from time to time. We had business men and women, medical doctors, accountants, engineers, ministers and priests, military people as well as other professionals participate in the studies and the exchange of experience and ideas.

Mrs. ATG once gave Henry Belk, a son of the founder of the Belk department stores an an exchange on faith that he admitted made the most sense of accepting things one could not understand, but appeared to be true.

Henry was wealthy and he spent a lot of money exploring for truth all over the world. He reminded me of the Apostle Thomas who wanted to touch and feel and prove truth. Some of Henry’s explorations were written about in magazines including the Readers Digest.

I think the bottom line regarding Redrock’s question is that mortals are finite with finite minds that are not yet equipped to understand the infinite.

While I’m not comparing what has happened to these precious girls to a Lifetime movie, watching the movie “Big Trucker” reminded me of what Hannah and Morgan must have went through. For those who haven’t seen it, its about a “giant” of a man who beats, tortures, rapes, then discards the bodies of several women in a drainage ditch. The immediate family of the man in the movie not only knew what was going on but in ways helped him. I can’t help but think the JM’s family at least knew what he was but yet did nothing about it. In a strange way, I hope he did drug them so that hopefully they were not fully conscious while being attack. Also, as a Christian, I know that God was there to numb the pain and sent his angels to carry them home.

Thank you ATG and Ragdoll for both your posts that explain His love and grace in such horrible situations.

@GraceintheHills. Imo Chesterfield was working down a punch list of specific sites
prioritized & based on analyzed tips & other investigative sources,
and at the conclusion of one site, they moved onto the next. likely
the punch list was also organized to be in close proximity. I hope a public award
goes to the analyst/designers/managers of the search lists drawn up, a
complex job that bore fruit. Personally I think the God reference, while heartfelt, was
one of several messages to Jesse and family.

I guess we are all wondering if JM worked at the Mountainview Adult Home.

Deepest condolences to the Graham family. It is my thought the 3 girls and their families helped eased Mr & Mrs G into the very unpopular “club” Dr Harrington speak of, but it was unavoidable.

Yes, I imagine he is a keeper of some items, like the shirt(S),so maybe that was in the apt upon the search. Lets hope.
I thought I had read leading up the this wknd that LE had migrated back to this area in general, perhaps do to what was thought to be returned ping info. And then, with this tip in particular, was able to nail this. Thank God, the parents needed answers already.

I also agree that location is important to JLM, and in understanding that, it will help to find others that may be associated with him.

If you look at NBC Channel 29 news, on one of therir news segments about the discovery, look at the comments section. Someone states it is their family property where Hannah’s remains were found in a dry creek bed behind the house in a shallow grave. First owned by the Campbell’s then this guy’s father, who’s last name is McDaniel.

So I am assuming this is not accused’s family property, but a property known to him in that area he knows so well.

Lindsay, I spent some time trying to dig into that property’s history the other night and came up with nothing. I’m going to go back at it when I have time. It sounds like from these comments though that the abandoned house may have just provided seclusion.

We are aware of the ownership and proximity to the area- for now, I am not posting any of it. Let me tell you why.

This is an active death investigation. Because I have medico legal training- I am precluded from doing so while I am aware that activity is current. I don’t want these residents hounded before LE has an opportunity to preform their diligence for Hannah.

Photos of the interior of the home on 3193 Old Lynchburg Rd from when it was on the market- As Leslie said- it is not in shambles, just vacant.

The home had been on and off the market for years. The property notes on a real estate website say “Home has been rented before for $1400 and the cottage is NOW rented for $800.” Not sure if and when the tenants moved out but I found an interesting nugget in some Facebook comments from the neighbors.

“I live a mile from there, the owner is my neighbor. The last residents of the smaller rental were said to be “nefarious”.”

hmm Nefarious and JM go hand in hand. Wonder if he had some ‘business’ dealings there?

I think this comment may be from a neighbor who called in the tip.
“The buzzards were not circling, they were all over the top of the house and in the trees behind the house. The remains were also found in a dry creek bed behind the house. Also, there are tons of coyotes in our area.”

“It is freakishly unnerving that the remains were found near a long vacated residence just two doors down from my house. There is an enormous population of wildlife in the area that would accelerate decomposition”

I found these comments on Coy’s FB page under his posted article “Where Hannah Was Found”. https://www.facebook.com/coybarefoot?fref=ts

My opinion on the Sept/Oct time frame for JLM attacks…It is the beginning of the school year. Kids going off to college are naturally excited to be living life on their own away from parental supervision. I think the first few months are prime time for kids to cut up and party while in their new independent living arrangements. Safety is most likely not at the top of their priority list at this time. Kids (specifically girls) imbibing and celebrating their independence can lead them to let their guard down and take risks that they most likely would not while home or sober. Unfortunately, girls who are partying (and taking more risks) are then more susceptible to predators such as JLM. Therefore, the first few months of college, JLM would know it is party time and he would watch the streets and bars for these naive girls possibly impaired. From my experience with my college age son’s friends who live away at college, the novelty of the college party life begins to wear out after the first several months away from home and they focus back on why they are there.

I am thinking that LE found some things in their search of JM’s residence that he kept as trophy’s. Morgan’s boots and a piece of jewelry were not found. There is also the story of JM removing a womans boots without permission to play with her feet inside a restaurant or bar. We don’t have information regarding Hannah, but she may have been barefoot too.

Red Hill road appears to have been his comfort zone. Somewhere along that area is a location where JM took his victims prior to placing the bodies. I am thinking that it is in the North Garden community.
