I sure do appreciate that, dear friendy! Honestly, it’s a journey I’ve been on for years…to expect and respect that God’s time is ‘perfect’. HE does not exist in a place of time or space. Oh, the temper tantrums I’ve had because of this truth. I have no doubt in my mind, that God was with Hannah from beginning until He received her into His arms. I keep praying for her parents, family and friends that they will find rest in God as He comforts them during this difficult time in their lives. I don’t know how I could handle this without my faith, but God speed.

I’m so grateful to know you are praying, too! The power of prayer is the power of God, who hears and answers prayer. He knows our hearts and our prayers before we go to Him. He is The Omniscient! xo

    To God be the glory.

    @ Mosaic

The very thought of Gil Harrington holding her daughter’s precious skull in her hands, came to my mind, too. It was the time when the movie, The Lovely Bones, had come out. We all handle grief differently, but how gracious did she grieve in front of the world! I’m not sure I would have had the same courage…but her faith shone as bright as her sparkly daughter. She gave us hope. I remember it humbled me tremendously. The Harrington’s must be in a state of reliving this time of year, 5 years ago. My prayers go out to them, too. xo

Love to Mom3.0, ATG, Eloise, Graceinthehills, Rose, pale rider…It’s so comforting to have y’all here. xo

I’m confused…. has the exact address been confirmed? I understand her remains were found on an abandoned land (which I also understood could be rented and in working order), with a house on the property, near Walnut Creek Park (off of Old Lynchburg Road).

Walnut Creek Park is NOT on Old Lynchburg road but you do need to access the park from OL Rd.

Yes ragdoll- it is an over 2.5 acre parcel which adjoins other property. 2 residences on it.

I would’ve been on the bridge, fri ,if i could’ve.i kept thinking about how powerful the feeling must’ve been,as it seemed the whole community was on board, now.i hope this brings some healing to Charlottesville, theyv’e been through the wringer.first thing i read about George Carr was he was a teacher,i think we’ve all learned alot ,along the way ,via this case. Where does the evil originate? I’ve come across a couple of comments from articles.one was someone asking ‘where is jesse’s pitbull ‘popcorn’? So I wonder where is his pitbull ? And another comment said his father was an alcoholic ‘panhandler’,’ who hung out with the homeless in pantops’.the indecent exposure,i’m wondering’ there’s gotta be drugs in this mix’. Sexual assault ritual in the family history?

Random thoughts here – may not be appropriate at this stage (or for all readers). I’ll try to be mindful of my wording.

On the subject of T-shirts, DNA, and the accused as a “collector.”

It has been suggested, if not by LE then by family of the victims, that these abductions have included rape. If we assume that the perpetrator of these crimes has achieved his sexual gratification through this act, and considering the remote location(s) of the victim’s remains; perhaps the shirts are not so much intended as trophy. If they are used as literal collection/towel for cleanup of his own spilled genetic material, he may be taking them home to clean/wash them and assuming that a cycle of wash will dissolve/remove the stains/evidence and therefore feel absolved of the crime.

Semen detection, if that occurred, and I cannot address whether it has or not, is not a confirmation of rape, just from an investigative perspective trying to keep everyone on the facts “page”.

It’s remarkable that with the Sal’s restaurant video footage we, as the public, are able to witness the moment that JLM first sees Hannah and begins his pursuit.

That’s a key moment. In a matter of seconds he had sized up her situation and was following her. And there we are witnessing that happening.

I believe that it was not so happenstance. I believe hannah was looking for a ride and thought she secured one in some fashion through Matthew. Neither cell has been released and we know she was headed to the location , sometimes running- “with purpose”.

The property has a well on it and the smaller residence shows being rented at this time. I can’t wait for everyone to get their “just” desserts! Others knew about this…….all along…….and they will pay for it, maybe not in the justice system but they WILL pay.

  7. Bill says:

From what I read on CNN, it was highly doubted by an experienced medical professional/examiner, that due to the level of decomposition, these remains are not that of Hannah’s. Full skeleton is more closer to 6 months old, not 5 weeks. Why no conversation according to this information? It seems believable to me that they could have located someone else.

Bill- I could debate the issue if you were to provide a link as to the ME commentary you are referencing. That said, to your point- I am only ever going to believe the narrative of an ME, ME investigator or medico legal narrative that was on the scene and is part of the autopsy protocol. Specifically- to say that under certain conditions that a human body cannot skeletonize or mostly skeletonize in an open terrain in that zone is just incorrect. And that is without acknowledging possible chemical enhancements by an offender- which, if there is evidence of animal predation were not used.

Hi everyone, I’m a long time lurker (since 2009) – first time commenter. I have a question, but please excuse me if I missed this information somewhere along the way. I’m researching the history of the black community in Charlottesville so that I can attempt to make a connection to “location, location, location” as an effort to figure out what JM’s “statement” is. I came upon some interesting information about Vinegar Hill.

Has anyone else considered this? Am I heading in the right direction?

While exploring this topic, I came across an image of a man named George Carr(1914)from (what used to be) the Vinegar Hill community. I thought it was interesting, but maybe I’m way off.

OT: ATG: again, another of your great stories! Thank you for the understanding. We are all so different, eh? This Jersey girl thinks A TEXAS Gpa might just be the best kind! I was brought up strictly Roman Catholic, private school, mass 4 out of 7 days, Mom cantoring, all the ladies ALWAYS at the table talking Jesus and God and fabulous stories I was enthralled by! My senior year of Catholic HS was the 1st year we had a THEOLOGY class, and I was BLOWN away! OTHER gods (besides the Greek ones!), other texts, OTHER beliefs, I had to find out right away… I spent my college years at a Public University and found theology and philosophy texts I could spoil myself with when not reading true crime (!). As my daughters step out, I want them armed with information, knowledge, kindness, the gift of fear, respect… and the power to make their own choices is terrifying but a reality. Teach your children well has never meant so much to me…

My heartfelt sorrow to The Graham family, my appreciation to the PD, LE and all volunteers. Oh, Blink… *sigh*

Blink, I have always believed that JLM offered HG a ride home and didn’t appear menacing at all to her. I suspect he did the same with MH and any other women he may have victimized. JMHO.

Regarding the tip, I definitely do believe tips were called or walked in just be the way the area was targeted. Looks like it was not a tip given by JLM or LE would have driven straight to the house and had JLM show them where he (allegedly)left HG or any other remains.

Jan, are you sure the other house on the property is rented? I keep hearing the property was “abandoned.”

I agree with Blink that there is no need to name the owner of the property here. High profile cases have a way of dragging a lot of names and reputations through the mud. No innocent person deserves that.

Just read that JLM has been indicted for attempted capital murder, abduction, and penetration with an object in the Fairfield sexual assault case.

Me too Grace, apologize I missed your comment. It is interesting entirely that they sought an indictment. This case is locked down tightly, imo.

From a psych perspective- I want everyone to keep an eye out for how upcoming charges against Matthew unfold.
Penetration with an object is a critically important profile marker if I have been concerned about from the beginning.

That said, I’ve witnessed too many miracles in my life not to believe. My faith is the only thing that has gotten me through some very difficult and tragic events. I hope my answer isn’t silly, but enlightening. Namaste

@Rose7. Fear not, Ray Morrogh is a really good prosecutor. He has handled a slew of high profile cases. I don’t do criminal defense work but did have occasion to try a case against him back in the mid 90′s when I was starting out and had a civil client who found himself in criminal court. Ray was an excellent lawyer and has only gotten better since that time.

  25. Rose says:

Should have realized the Fairfax DA
would competitively race to the Courthouse to try first.

The strongest case should be tried first imo.

  26. Rose says:

@Link. I expect the DA in the home of UVA Law will take the time

He takes Hannah there, KNOWING it’s safe…no one lives in the house Hannah was left behind. Makes me wonder if he knew Anchorage Farm was a safe place to put Morgan, for whatever reasons. I’m beginning to think it wasn’t the trek we thought it was.

Has anyone learned if Mr. Bass knew or was acquainted with Jesse Matthew, for whatever reason (not as an accomplice, of course!).

a sec at Tempo to settle a tab, & I’ll get you there.

    plausible.
You know what keeps eating at me?

The ID of the man who was following a “distressed Hannah” and was the witness who says he saw an AA male with his arms around her waist. His name has never been released. I wonder how he came to the conclusion that she was distressed? That would seem to be an important piece of witness information.

By his non-reaction to Jesse meeting up with Hannah, or non-intervention I should say- should we infer that he felt her distress was over? Did he know JLM?

Did he ever work for Region 10?

    @Bill

A woman donated her body to a human decomp research facility in TX. Vultures reduced her body to bones in just five hours. So yes, it seems very possible. Especially with coyotes added to the mix which one neighbor said run rampant in the area Hannah was found. Here is the link to the aforementioned.

    http://sciencebasedlife.wordpress.com/2012/02/08/how-long-does-it-take-for-vultures-to-eat-a-human-body/

I hope, and pray that law enforcement will continue to look on properties in this area, and possibly discover other women that fell victim.

  41. Formerbarista says:

Note to Bill, with graphic warning which I hope you’ll all try to ignore: I believe you’re speaking of 80-year-old Michael Baden’s interview where he suggested that skeletonization couldn’t have occurred in such a short time (in that setting.) Besides him sounding doddy and a bit in his cups (could be tea, I don’t know) his suggestion is largely true if one pictures an open-area family park, maybe like Central Park. True also in North Garden, if not for the predatory birds and animals living near the water and heavy wooded land.

In the tropics, skeletonization can happen in less than two weeks. Yet, in France last year, a woman was devoured in less than an hour after she fell off a cliff. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/06/woman-eaten-by-vultures-cliff_n_3224746.html

Naturally, the predators are voracious, but they aren’t necessarily neat. There may be unreached aspects of the body (where it is tightly held by clothing perhaps)denying immediate access. Once the internal bloat happens through enzyme and bacteria breakdown, putrification draws more of a crowd. We’ll first see the blow flies, bottle flies (and their whole ‘timeable’ cycle), along with the carrion beetle, mites, and mice be among the first responders.

The blow flies will choose the places to posit. Oviposit, but I’m checking to see if Ms. B is reading. This is important in getting the event underway.

The little guys tend to scatter when the huge, huge vultures congregate. So do dogs, foxes, coyotes, rats, and other meat-eating critters. With a nearly 6-foot wingspan, the Black and Turkey vultures pretty much command presence.
Turkey vultures are all over the country and Blacks are more often found in the southeast U.S. trending down into South America. (Oh, and I meant to mention that turkey vultures fly low to use their excellent smell detectors, along with sharp eyes to detect carcasses.)I seem to remember that the Black Vultures don’t have that sense of smell–anyone?

So, yes, it’s rather distasteful, but very much a part of creation. My use of homonyms is intentional and, I pray, not offensive, as I believe words have power to break through to the truth about ourselves and our world.

As we move forward now, we know it’s more important than ever to carry the message to impact change at every level, but especially where young people gather and socialize.

Perhaps Maya Angelou’s words can convict our heart to express our words.

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning” and “I’m grateful for being here, for being able to think, for being able to see, for being able to taste, for appreciating love – for knowing that it exists in a world so rife with vulgarity, with brutality and violence, and yet love exists. I’m grateful to know that it exists.”

Yes Fb- I was reading, and yes, you picked up what I was “putting down” regarding the exchanges and frankly-coscavenging habits of the blowfly cycle and animal predation. They influence each other greatly.

So, will Matthew first have to face the Fairfax charge? I know he was charged with what he did to Hannah prior, but is it a chronological order thing? Will he be extradited to Fairfax? I would think he would never be brought to trial for that one being that his charges here are more serious? I just want this man down and whoever helped him in any way, shape or form to go down with him. Sister?? She gave him her car as far as I know, but I don’t know much. :) My thoughts out to all of the victims and their families. I cannot pretend to imagine what they are dealing with.

On arranging a ride. I think Hannah was running to catch what she thought might be the last CAT closest to home, possibly the Outer U-loop; not sure if that is one that runs until 2:30am on weekends. She may have had the Trans Loc app on her phone. I sure would if I was a student there with all that great bus service. Locals could identify the “night stops” and the Friday, Saturday night schedule, of course.*
*While I’m ranting, let me say that the introduction to riding these busses is offensive in telling riders “sit back, relax, trust us” Uh, no…

Hannah may have asked someone for bus info but was clearly dazed and confused, as we found her in video surveillance. We know JM saw her, seized control by disarming the target, and commenced close-range combat. Unfortunately, his prey was already wounded.

  45. A Texas Grandfather says:

Thanks Rose for the link about the accomplishments of Chief Longo. The last sentence in that piece where he is involved in working with citizens groups to solve community problems is important.

If he actually is working with some groups, it is time to have a meeting of all the business people on the downtown mall to gather their infomation about the behavior of JM and any other persons that have behaviors that are strange and seem to be hanging out on a regular basis. The bouncers and bar tenders at the various establishments around the area seem to be talking about how they thought JM was not a guy with good behavior.
JM may not be the only one these people observe. Now is a good time to have conversations with LE to identify any others and create a process of handling problems in the future.

As I understand it, the police station is at one end of the mall. It is too bad that Hannah was not able to reach that location for help.

Perhaps the Chief could also start a group that works with the young women in the area for the purpose of increasing their safety. Police are people too that have children and care about them and most are concerned for the safety of other young people as well.

Many young women need to learn just what the police do so that they will not be afraid to ask for help even if they have consumed too much alcohol or other intoxicants to the point of barely being able to walk. The police need to develop a program that does not include arrest if the young woman asks for help when intoxicated.

Young ladies often in the name of being fashionable make clothing choices that don’t fit the situation. I remember when I taught middle school music that extremely short skits were in vogue. These are ages twelve through fourteen. After two weeks of working with them I grew tired of seeing their underwear, so I sat down with the head band director, a woman, to discuss the situation. She agreed that she too didn’t like it. All the other directors were men and they too chimed in that it was time for a change. She had the men take the boys to another band hall and she gave them a very good lecture on how to dress properly for a school classroom.

We need to teach our young women how to protect themselves in a similar manner. Walking alone especially after dark in some places is very dangerous. They need to learn about this. A police lecture given by both men and women could be helpful. There are many things that youth are not able to recognize about the behavior of themselves and others until they are properly taught.
