yes I was being facetious about the clothes…unless we adopt Muslim customs and attitudes towards women’s behavior and dress…have you ever seen women in full black birkas…with only the eyes showing…beyond creepy…I have seen some here in Pittsburgh…today I was in Oakland where Carnegie Mellon and u of Pittsburgh is…because of all this high horsing about women’s attire in public…I looked around…every single female had on a dull uniform of skintight pants or tights…fat or thin…are these girls asking for it because their pants are tight….also crowds of private school girls in uniform….a particular fetish of some men….really short of the burka…what? as someoneentioned…clothing is not what triggers these freaks….all women are lovely…but especially the young…hair is also a powerful draw…so we should wear bonnets…lol….Amish bonnets…anti-rape bonnets and pinafores..lol…I have been thinking about this issue…I do not believe men are all that aware of clothes….body …hair….yesok one last thing ………there is an interview yesterday….out in nelson county…jlm moms landlord…..he said HE WORKED ON ANCHORAGE FARM…..not sure if now….but was working there when Morgan h discovered…..also Keswick is quite a distance from north garden….phew I have said too much…need a muzzle

I’m just remembering …. they were some leggings/tights found near the Observatory during a search for Morgan? There was an abduction and attempted assault before Morgan … the girl though was getting into a cab? And, she said he took her to near the Observatory? Do these two thing match in any way. Was the cab and driver LJM? Then who?

Blink, I also believe that these cases will not see trial, and for own selfish reasons I want them to – because for my own knowledge and morbid curiosity, I want to know what actually happened. I think he will plead out to avoid the DP, which is fine by me – I am sort of neutral on the DP, and I think whether a person suffers more being sentenced to death or LWP is entirely subjective. However, while some families may want the DP, it can mean 10+
years of trial, appeals, and hearing about their loved ones death and their killer’s name over and over again. LWP may actually allow more closure for the families in that regard. I don’t see a plea as him getting off easy – he’ll never get out of prison, either way.

  4. Lyndsay says:

@Belisma – Virginia is a death penalty state, and they usually act swiftly in carrying out those executions. He will be offered life without parole in exchange for pleading guilty in all cases and telling the court exactly how he did ut, as well as the location of any remains of any additional victims. A plea eliminates the possibility of an appeal, which saves the state a lot of money, If he fears meeting his maker he will plead out and go straight to sentencing, where he will get life without parole, and the victims families will get a chance to make a statement. I think this is what happened with other serial killers like BTK killer and Green River killer. The weight of state’s evidence must be such that the defendant does not want to risk being found guilty by the jury and sentenced to death, The state must present their evidence to him then as damning enough to put that fear of the needle into him.

BTK had no plea deal prior to his change of plea.

Following all of this everyday as usual since I came into Morgan Harringtons orbit and found BOC.
God bless the Harringtons, prayers for Morgan, Hannah and the Grahams. It is hard to put into words the unspeakable. The unimaginable, a parents worst nightmare, a tragedy beyond comprehension.
I thought about it all today. I thought about Morgans killer who broke her bones, raped and murdered her. I thought about a wolf in sheeps clothing. An easy going brown skinned man with dreads offering assistance, a ride to a vulnerable girl out in the night on her own. I thought about the historical perspective. Where did his hate come from? His need to violently attack, toture, control, rape young, pretty, smart, white, apparently privileged females.
Where did this come from? WTF?
Some sort of horrific backlash? And his family apparently God fearing folk.
A deadbeat dad with drug and alcohol problems. Sigh…
Was it built into this killers DNA? What happened here?
He was there in plain view, fit the profile but slid under the wire despite prior violent sexual attacks and charges.
There is no joy in his capture and punishment just a sick dull feeling in the pit of the stomach that a killer has been taken off the streets and the next girl will be saved at least from him.
My daughters daddy is black,6 foot three, a sweet heart, and when I met him he had dreads and such a sunny disposition.
I am white and relate to Morgan and Hannah and all of those sparkly girls. Now my daughter who is mixed is 19 and a freshman at college in another town in another state.
I write this with a heavy heart. I pray our children will be safe that we have taught them well that they will listen to their
Intuition and adhere to the Buddy system safety in numbers.
I might have trusted this man. Morgan seems to have and Hannah too. In what shape does a killer appear?
It is mind boggling and very daunting to think about.
Where evil comes from and when and how it shows it’s face.
Thank you dear Blink for your advocacy and your smarts you know your s…t!
Don’t know how you do it. Sending you love and also the rest of BOC you know who you are.
I will be very interested to watch this all unfold and try to get a glimmer of understanding about the profile of someone who appears to be a serial killer with a definite MO,a troubled history,a questionable
IQ and a lot of cunning.
    Peace.

About a week ago before finding the remains, there were reports that digging would take place where search dogs alerted them. Did this ever happen? Where was this hit at? Since there is discussion if there are other girls JM could have disposed of, I’m curious if the hit could have been another missing girl.

Blink, can you help me understand why they are searching Alexis’ car again for Matthews DNA? If his DNA was found initially it would have come back as a match to the 2005 case, right? I’m very confused.

They are not searching her Dad’s car. They are testing an unkown male DNA sample found within her car against Matthew’s DNA. I have not seen the protocol reports as to the DNA evidence in RAT’s case- but if done properly- it will have excluded any “knowns” to include investigators and field and trace techs. That is forensics 101.

Point is- I would have to see the sample they are talking about comparing and if it is a full or partial profile ( although I presume it is or there would be objections to testing it).

I don’t think I knew there was undetermined male DNA within her vehicle in the first place- if someone can correct me on that- I’d be obliged. That’s like a slipknot of reasonable doubt for RAT’s case and if that is true- makes me a little antsy.

In our PC society, employers are encouraged to bend over backward to give people 2nd, 3rd & 4th chances. As for Jesse Matthew’s record, from what I understand, there were only minor offenses on his official record. The other more serious incidents were only accusations. I am truly asking because I do not know, would employers see information about the Liberty and CNU incidents during a routine background check since no charges were ever filed? My guess is no. Would he have even been fingerprinted for these incidents? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not defending him and I’m terribly upset that he was able to walk away from some very serious charges unscathed. Had they been pursued, probably at least 2 young women would be alive today. I’m just not sure it’s fair to blame his employers through the years for covering for him. How much information would they have been able to legally gather about his past? Also, be clear, he was not employed by the educational facility of UVA, he was employed by the hospital in what I think is probably a very low level position. A position that probably would be something open to people with a less than stellar work history or even criminal history to help give them a leg up. His work history was probably bad, but having never been tried for a felony, I don’t think he had to report the lesser charges on a work application. Notice, I didn’t include the schools he attended because I don’t know what information they did or could share. I’ll have to also say, I’m not sure how much background checking cab companies do for their employees, especially the smaller ones who operate with only a few vehicles. Did they have any idea he was a rotten seed and chose to overlook it? As for the bars and bouncers, did his actions ever escalate to the point where they felt he was a real threat or was he just a little out of control. If the reports are true, even the bar that banned him let him come back after 2 months. Did the young women ask that he be removed or did they feel they had handled the situation themselves by telling him to back off. I’ve said before, I just don’t believe anyone realized he was dangerous. Maybe obnoxious sometimes when drinking, but that probably describes the majority of the bar clientele given enough alcohol consumption. We’re looking at him from today, after being arrested for Hannah’s abduction, not from yesterday when he had been around for years and apparently was well known and had never been in any real trouble, or so many thought. Even our friend Redly, who posted on BOC once after Hannah disappeared, described him as someone known on the mall who appeared to be a little slow (maybe not exactly his words.) His family maybe knew what he really was, but even they could have been in the dark about his true nature.

Grace, I don’t know whether or not you are from Virginia, but Virginia is famous or maybe it’s infamous for it’s sticky red clay. I’m sure local LE has the technology to determine, from vegetation, type of gravel, etc. whether or not Jesse Matthew’s car had been in the area where the remains were found. I don’t think the car he took to Texas was that car. If there was any evidence Hannah had ever been in that car I believe it would have been shipped back to Virginia immediately after being processed in Texas.

  12. Sunshine_4me says:

This article made me better understand the details of JM’s aggression the night Hannah disappeared. He was aggressive with other women in a bar prior to his encounter with Hannah. While I have read comments here of what transpired that night (wanting to look at a woman’s feet, removing her socks, etc.), I didn’t get the full effect until I read this. In my opinion, the timing of Hannah’s encounter with JM (in addition to her being drunk) Hannah didn’t have a chance that night.

  13. Tiny says:

“Others here have asked how many girls were possibly victim to JM. I found a list of young women abducted, or missing from the same area. Here is the list
    √ 2009 – Cassandra Morton, 23, abducted/missing October 2009
    √ 2009 – Morgan Harrington, 20, abducted/missing October 2009
    2010 – Samantha Clarke, 19, abducted/missing Sept 2010 (*Randy Allen Taylor)
    2011 – Lauren Susann Smith, 24, abducted/missing Nov 2011
    2012 – Heather Hodges, 22, abducted/missing April 2012
    2012 – DaShad Laquinn Smith, 19, abducted/missing Nov 2012
    2013 – Alexis Murphy, 17, abducted/missing Aug 2013 (*Randy Allen Taylor)
    2013 – Jamisha Gilbert, 17, abducted/missing Nov 2013″

I copied and pasted that because it is so amazing to me. That’s quite a few. I’m not sure how many missing girls is common in such an area but that seems beyond tragic. I pray for these families and that LE is close to figuring it all out.

Mosaic, I agree with you. Something is definitely rotten in that white dude’s description of the black man with arms around.

I am going to put this in the category of things which absolutely DO NOT ADD UP, AND ARE NOT BELIEVABLE.

Since LE overlooked the main point of checking taxi drivers five years ago, and we all knew from discussion five years ago that was the key point, and we all knew that this was being overlooked, but we all hoped LE knew more than we did had had it under control, I am going to put this in the same category, and if it is not addressed might well be another LE “fail.” This description fail of white dude does not pass the smell test.

LE does not get to keep doing this. When things just do not add up, we need to know that LE has thoroughly checked it out. Last time, about the key taxi driver investigations, we assumed that LE was on top of it all. No more free passes for this kind of blunder. LE gets no further passes due to that taxi botch.

If white dude has been handed a pass by LE as it appears, but LE has “overlooked the obvious” once again, then the public is still at massive risk. No, in fact, the public is at even greater risk of being blindsided, as was the case five years ago when we assumed by LE negligence that taxi rides were checked out and found to be SAFE.

  15. GeorgiaDad says:

Rapes occur in Muslim countries where women wear Burkhas. But I feel the ladies here have been far too critical of ATG’s opinions. His opinions may not be politically correct, but are based on a lifetime of experience.

First, MH and HG put themselves at risk by being alone and intoxicated, not by their clothing.

Unfortunately, many people have an almost religious fervor against criticism of women’s attire, and somehow feel that if men can be re-educated to think like women, that violence against women can be eliminated.

Random opportunistic attacks like those of JM are not related to attire. But to extrapolate that scanty attire does not produce any type of increase in unwanted sexual advances makes no sense. There are two types of “date rape” (a term I hate because if has so many different meanings) there is the planned attack by drugs or physical violence, but there is also a type of activity where things just go too far, frequently alcohol related. Improper attire may contribute to the latter.

I have every right to walk around with a wad of cash in my hand, leave my car unlocked in a bad neighborhood, and leave my front door open when I am not at home. It would be nice if we could “educate” people to respect property, but I still lock my doors.

Provocative attire by women frequently attracts the intended attention, but also attracts unwanted attention. Women should be able to dress this way, within social norms, but need to be aware that they need to take extra precautions for their safety.

This is somewhat beside the point here since neither HG or MH was dressed in a provocative fashion, and likely neither would have stood out in Charlottesville.

  16. A Texas Grandfather says:

    Grace
In regards to your questions about the soil or road material that could be found on tires. JM may know how to detail a vehicle since he drove a cab. If he does know the proper way to do it and had access to proper equipment, the chance of soil recovery and matching is much less.

However, it only takes a little material for a soil expert to make a match. The next problem is it an exact match or is it general. Gravel and dirt roads are generally made up of layers of material. Clay,if native, is often bladed up and mixed with small gravel so that the surface will not be slick. Driving on a road that is made of clay only is nearly impossible when wet. That is the reason for the mixed material.

Red Hill road is generally an East-West road that begins East of the Walnut Creek park and terminates West of hwy 29. It is several miles long. The best chance of using soil data to prove a vehicle was at a location would be if the vehicle has been driven off a roadway on to a property that could be specifically matched.

The soil or road material could be found in a fender well or an under-body part where it was thrown by the wheels.

There is a lot more detail to this type of information gathering and its use. I hope this helps.

There is no set of circumstances unless there is something specifically unique to soil located within or about his vehicle matches those same unique characteristics of a crime scene or her recovery scene or both that would amount to physical evidence in this case. When I saw unique characteristics I am referring to chemicals, DNA, blood, decompositional fluids, other specific body fluids, etc. Now, if it can be matched at all to say, things of Graham’s in his possession, that would be a positive use for sure.

Now, tire tracks- I can tell you right now if they were lucky enough to find those and he used that Orange Crush mobile- he’s toast. That would be a slam dunk with those tires and the donut on the right front.

What’s notable is that the location where she was last seen is 5 minutes (2 miles) down the road from Christopher Newport University. She went missing July 24, 2003. That is the same window of time that Matthew was attending the college, however, it was summer session. Was he there during that time?

She was 24 and was last seen at 7 pm at the Food Lion grocery store in the 10000 block of Warwick Boulevard. Her car was found abandoned the next day in the parking lot.

Her family would not be in a DNA DB. What this is telling me is that they never ran an exclusionary panel on the unidentified DNA found. If this is the first time they are taking DNA ( it could just be because the FBI is running it and the integrity and chain of evidence needs to meet protocol) it is not my favorite news of the day.

    Greetings- tarheellvr

i totally understand – I would LOVE for none of this to be a factor in Morgans case or Hannahs case or ANY case

Most rapists dont even remember what their victims were wearing

Yet If these cases go to trial- their behaviors and attire likely will be discussed at length

Unfortunately most often the victims will be put on trial-
    alive or dead

Morgan has been on trial for years-
She was drinking drunk or stoned
she was wearing a short skirt too much make-up- F-me boots -she locked arms with a stranger and said lets go.. she shook her leg while walking with a bunch of guys- she went off to a Plot with but not with them- her behavior scared off the BBplayers – she smiled and curtsied while wearing those boots and that skirt- she was looking for a ride most likely to get drugs or to party She was hitch hiking-
she had a propensity to “hook up” and be gone for a day or two- (this one PP from LEs own words)

Her death was an accident- not abduction rape and murder

Hannahs trial in the court of public opinion has only just begun-

she was drinking drunk or stoned- She was looking for a party or to party otherwise Why didnt she accept the offer of a walk home- why wasnt Hannah dressed that conservatively- – She was wearing a tight shiny croptop… her pants were tight nearly off the hip – her hair was down- she allowed LG to put his arm around her- she walked off with him keeping pace with him -went to tempo with him -and/or waited around for him – she left tempo walking with him- She got in the car willingly- She had consensual sex with him

whatever happened it was an accident- not abduction rape and murder

Some of the people who think like this may find their way on the jury/s
and if so there is a very real risk that they will be swayed by the defense to hand down a lesser sentence or worse

For instance there was a court case in Florida where a 22 year old woman who obviously was not dressed conservatively- she wore a short lace skirt no undies and a crop top She alleged she was abducted and raped by knife point the defense alleged she was either a prostitute or agreed to have sex for drugs/money…

The jury acquitted the alleged rapist because as the jury foreman stated it : She was “advertising for sex,“ and that “she asked for it.“ another juror was quoted as saying: ”We felt she was up to no good the way she was dressed.”

Shocker- the man went on to abduct and rape another skirt wearing woman by knife point and while raping her he repeatedly recited what he now thought was his get out of jail free card- he blamed her over and over while reciting his new mantra: ”It’s your fault. You’re wearing a skirt.” He was sentenced to life with possible parole after 7 years He may be on the streets now

It Shouldnt EVER be a factor- as i have tried to point out again and again the choice of dress does not add a layer to self defense it will not safeguard anyone against a rapist. Many studies have been done-

tarheellvr, until the day when trial-by-clothing never happens -not in the court of public opinion nor in any criminal court I think it is an important discussion to have

Charlottesville defense attorney Scott Goodman said Fairfax may have the strongest case against Matthew at this juncture. “I’m sure the prosecutor in Charlottesville would be happy for Fairfax to go first. If Fairfax can get a life sentence or two, or maybe even three, since there are three charges with life sentences possible, that would take some of the heat, some of the pressure off Albemarle and Charlottesville to move quickly.” According to the indictment, there is DNA linking Matthew to the Fairfax attack and a witness willing to testify.

    . . . .

“The Charlottesville case involving Hannah Graham is a case that is going to rely almost completely on circumstantial evidence,” Goodman said. “That’s going to take a long time to develop. “It includes a lot of lab work, forensics… the Charlottesville case is still months, maybe even a year away from being tried.”

Matthew is currently being held at the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail. He could be transported to Fairfax to face a judge, or due to security concerns, the court could hold the proceedings over a video conference.

“If security decides it’s not worth it to take the risk to put this individual in the car and driving him to Fairfax with all the problems that could accompany that…people in custody can appear in a courtroom by video which is a more secure way to do it,” said Goodman.

you said wrt Hannah, and I hope it is a hypothetical & not your own impression:

“looking for a party or to party otherwise Why didnt she accept the offer of a walk home- why wasnt Hannah dressed that conservatively- – She was wearing a tight shiny croptop… her pants were tight nearly off the hip – her hair was down- she allowed LG to put his arm around her-”

90% of girls at college today look for a party on Friday nite.
black tights & shiney tops are The Uniform.
    Who offered a walk home?
Not her “friends.” All girls with long hair (majority) wear it hanging.

There are a cluster of missing women in January (Championships/Super Bowl games?) and Spring (Spring football practice – do they have games then?)

This has been sent to the CPD Tip Line and Coy Barefoot, as well as a few other folks following the cases of so many missing and murdered women in Virginia.

    Welcome A Florida Grandmother-

with all due respect, JLM was no longer playing football at Liberty after October 17, 2002. I am not understanding the correlation ( or perceived) to the football schedule you are positing?

@3.0 wrt allowing JM to put his arm around her.
    1) she was impaired & unstable.
    2) pleasant girls are trained to be meek & mild
with males who hit on them — saving face for
    themselves & the male.

For example, imo in this age group, a girl confronted by Big Dreadlocks on a public street
with that action of his, while surprised, might think–I’ll just go along for a wee bit with Biggie,
    then slide away. Not confront.

To elaborate on Blinks statement about the tire tracks: The tires on a vehicle have by law a requirement to have data as to mfg, and a lot of other information for that particular tire. If you have a recent vehicle produced by any of the major manufacturers, they will have a section in the owners manual about this information. LE can take the info off the tires on the vehicle and know which tire and a particular tread pattern for that tire. This works even if a vehicle were to have tires from four different mfg. This is a slam dunk compared to matching soils.

The other thing that is important for tire matches is the unique wear pattern for that tire. A tire wear pattern is caused by things that are related to the principle drivers size, and the mechanical setup of the steering and the accuracy of the wheel balance when they are placed on the vehicle.

Details, Details and more Details, but this is how forensics works to show beyond any doubt that a particular claim is true.

I acknowledge that Camblos previously stated that he would not accept the case; however, he appears to have done a 180 on this issue.

Apparently, Camblos wrote the Fairfax Circuit Court and asked to be appointed to represent Matthew in FE-2014-1313. In addition, Morrogh represented to the court, at the hearing today, that Camblos wanted to be appointed.

The Public Defender requested to be appointed today; however, that request was denied.

Despite the news reports stating Camplos will represent Matthew, I have not seen anything official regarding that appointment. I do, however, believe that he will be appointed.

If Camplos is “appointed” he will be paid by the taxpayers.

    B,
We knew Jesse Matthew was no longer playing for Liberty at the time of those attacks. However, from these three dates, it looks like he may be unconsciously or intentionally targeting women on the days Liberty plays a game because of a desire for vengeance.

When I have time, I’ll look for a Liberty Schedule for those years to see if any other attacks lined up with a LU game day.

Your reply to tarheelvr about the case in Florida is exactly what a good defense attorney will plant in the minds of a jury to get his client off on something that the victim did that encouraged the perp.

The more things one can do to negate that stance, the better ones case will be. Behavior and appearance are what people notice about a person.

I can remember on a particular occasion where I was serving jury duty. The court clerk or jury shepherd divided the potential jurors into groups of thirty. I happened to be juror one in one of the groups. There was a drug case that included three defendants. Because there were three defendants, three groups of thirty were called for jury selection. I was the lead person so it was my job to assist the jury shepherd in getting the people safely across the street and to the court room.

After crossing the street and making certain that everyone was ready to cross to the next corner, the gentleman behind me whom I had never seen before stated “They will never pick you for a juror”. I asked how he came to make such a statement. His reply was “you are well dressed. You have good posture. You moved with authority when requested to assist the jury shepherd. This tells me that no lawyer that sees this behavior and appearance is going to allow you on the jury. They know that such a person is smart and they cannot sway you on an emotional argument.” He was correct, I didn’t get selected.

Everyone is constantly being sized up in the public by your behavior and appearance. It is human nature to do that.

I’m on my IPad again, still haven’t figured out how to link…. Sigh…..

This article from WTVR reminded me of several facts I had forgotten about Alexis Murphy. Sharing a snippet for you all.

“Last month Nelson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Anthony Martin stated there was no evidence Matthew was connected to Murphy’s disappearance.

Still, there has been an avalanche of public speculation.

Here are the five things people keep forgetting:

    1. Taylor attempted to implicate another man, saying that man was with Murphy when she left Taylor’s camper. That man was cleared by police. We will not name him because he is not a suspect, but his name is not Jesse Matthew.

    2. That man had cornrows, and allegedly sold Alexis Murphy marijuana. Repeat, he distinctly had cornrows, not dreadlocks as Matthew has. Again, that man was questioned by police, and found innocent.

    3. That man drove a “burgundy Caprice with 22-inch wheels,” not a burnt orange Chrysler Coupe like Jesse Matthew drove.

    murphy_matthew

    4. The surveillance video from Liberty Gas Station the night Alexis Murphy disappeared shows her walking behind the back of an object some say looks like Jesse Matthew’s vehicle. It isn’t.

“FBI and Virginia State Police have re-examined that footage in light of these concerns and are confident that the orange object is not a vehicle, but a portion of a sign hanging from the window,” said Martin.

    5. People are forgetting the list of evidence against Taylor includes a bloody t-shirt found in his camper with Murphy’s DNA, eyelashes and ripped out extensions, her smashed cellphone found on his property and video of the two speaking at Liberty gas station the night she disappeared. That’s a lot of evidence, and wound up being enough for a murder charge.

The Murphy family has gone on record stating that they do not believe Matthew was involved in the disappearance and death of Alexis. Essentially, law enforcement is thoroughly checking all their bases. In addition to Taylor’s DNA, other unknown DNA was found inside Murphy’s vehicle. That evidence will be checked against Matthew’s DNA.

But the other above facts can’t be thrown out the window.”

I think RAT is right where he belongs. I pray for peace and closure for the Murphy family.

I think the prosecutor agreed to test it to stop the inevitable writ of habeas coming his way asking for a new trial based on “new evidence”. It was an excellent decision and I am not so sure RAT defense atty did not write that letter and base requests on the facts that if he knew there was unidentified DNA- and if he did not push the issue now ( keep in mind pre-trials were not open to public) this comes back on him as a claim from RAT as ineffectiveness of counsel. RAT accused an individual by name, who was cleared, and ultimately his Atty did not call him to the stand in his defense.

Lastly to dda if you read this- I have never heard of an indigent criminal choosing their own attorney, which is the equivalent of private retention, pre-miranda and prior to charges being filed, and then that attorney becoming “court appointed”- meaning, paid for by the State. Can anyone enlighten me as to that process in VA?

  43. Grace says:

Blink, you’ve said before you don’t think this case with JLMS and Hannah will ever go to trial. Any chance JLMS will give up any other details IF he is involved in any other missing girls?

That’s an excellent question I am going to defer comment on because I feel that in a general sense it is going to depend on what charges he faces and in what order. The perception of leverage here is only as good as the one who has it, and the personnel tasked with attempting to tip that scale.

I would also float the possibility that it would not be an obtuse conversation for LE in each jurisdiction with pending investigations and/or indictments to have their Commonwealth Atty’s law clerks reviewing Federal laws that might be in play here. You would be shocked if I were able to convey how some major, famous criminals “flipped” based on the difference between looking at State v Federal prison.

Quid pro Quo is subjective. If there is someone else involved in anyway- it would be my recommendation that LE puts a great deal of emphasis on locating that individual or individuals pronto.

That is Game Changer 101 here.

  44. susan says:

Florida Grand suggested that three known attacks occurred directly and immediately after Liberty University football games, likely broadcast on the radio. This seems important for establishing an anger motive for the killings as well as for understanding the revenge motive. He listens to the football games on the radio and replays his anger at being removed from the team.

susan, that is incorrect (as to timing of games v radio v impetus) I do not discount that Mr. Matthew’s self-destructive choices and compulsions contributed to a possible compromise of his cope faculties at a minimum- but if his devotion to football superceeded ( which would seem necessary to subscribe to the theory) his motivations to rape and assault- it would seem he would have had a different victimization strategy.

I am not prepared yet to find this offender that complex just because in theory these have become complex cases. Complex case has become a legal definition subscribed to elements of due process.

  47. GeorgiaDad says:

A brief comment on Fl GM’s post.

I think the real correlation discovered in the data you linked is that JM’s possible crimes tend to occur on weekends during the academic year. That is, after all, when his prey is most likely to be wondering around. that is also when football games are played.

On a side note, I understand the intent to protect the identity of victims of sexual assault, but I wonder if the alleged victims at Liberty and CNU fit his “type” as described by the bouncer – i.e., upper middle class intoxicated white women.

As an example of how I did not see a correlation specifically to games ( respectfully, it doesn’t address any previously and currently unknown victims which I strongly believe are out there and the concept of grudge-based former football team sex offense motivations is obtuse and would be a first I have ever encountered and I have had the unfortunate benefit of studying this particular crime very thoroughly with the experts who write the protocols and research within BAU). In my view, you are correct GD- it is about access.

Part of Matthew’s fantasy continuum is the ability to choose his victims from an assortment. What is incongruent about that ( see- I question my own theory all the time) is that the young lady who’s boots or socks he removed was african american. I do not believe that the 2005 victim is middle class white girl prepster-style.

That is not uncommon either considering he came upon her outside of a grocery store- night at a frat party, outside a nightclub and to my knowledge this young woman was carrying groceries ( vulnerable). Is this an indication of an evolution or escalation on behalf of Matthew? Could very well be. What I wish to impart to folks as a teaching point- is that ultimately from a learning perspective Matthew’s criminal and sexual motivations for serial offenses are very important to the study of this animal and there is simply not enough data, evidence or knowledge in the queue yet to do that effectively-

    I offer:
“… Given a thimbleful of [dramatic] facts we rush to make generalizations as large as a tub…”
    -Gordon Alport (1954)

He slid under fences for 14 years that we know of- even when his shirt got snagged on it a few times- how this happened and how victims became additional victims of his is a critically important piece of information we as a society (and me as a criminal investigative analyst and Mom) need to be ADAMANT about getting transparent answers to.

And, Bass is quoted as saying “This all doesn’t have to do with this place anymore”…..what kind of attitude is that? Ya think something has struck a nerve? I think it has everything to do with that place and he, of all people, should be checking his property thoroughly.

Maybe it’s just me…..but that seems to be a very heartless answer seeing that dozens of women have gone missing in that area and hardly any of them have been found. Maybe his property contains more secrets!

It has to do with his knowledge that JLM has associations to his property and potentially, it’s residents.

In fairness to Mr. Bass- at his age and this level of stress- I cant really blame him with a semi-quote that is out of context.

  49. susan says:

Well perhaps we can’t generalize a specific motive such as revenge from the timing of the LU football games on those days to the timing of those three attacks on the same days, but it is very interesting that the timing of the attacks on those days waited until after the games were over. Unless that game information was incorrect.

So the correlation does seem to be conceptually interesting. I’m not saying this is the only trigger for the rage. If that is what it is.

Perhaps there is some other explanation such as if this individual was at all tuned in to those games, he has some game day ritual of boozing and other habits to rev up the engine or loosen up inhibitions. Or perhaps after the games were over if he listened in, he had nothing better to do. I don’t think the observations of behavior that last night in question suggest normal behavior. Even the Tempo owner said that this suspect seemed more excited than usual. Another person described him as sweaty.

It would be interesting to understand the reason behind such odd behavior that night. I’m also still concerned about what looked like two individuals stalking Hannah that night on the mall, especially the one ducking in and out of doorways to stay out of sight and giving an unhelpful comment to the police as “short hair”?? The current glimpse of JM does not in any way shape or form involve “short hair.” In fact that seems to be a red herring.

I am also interested in Hannah’s purposeful walking/running in the opposite direction of where she was supposed to be going. She seemed to be running with a purpose. She did not seem lost, as I saw this.
