Charlottesville, VA– Just passing the month mark, the disappearance of Morgan Harrington from the John Paul Jones Area located on the UVA campus, leaves us with more questions than answers. Part II

The Faces of Her Facebook

Help Find Morgan Harrington was developed by a few concerned individuals interested in spreading the word about Morgan’s disappearance and boasts over 30,000 members. Not all posts are welcome.

NelsonIn particular, a member by the name of Nelson Kane was recently banned for posting very detailed hypothesis scenarios that sparked a firestorm of interest in the self-appointed athlete scout. His posts were deleted at the request of Law Enforcement who admit tasking two officers with monitoring the web for such activity in Morgan’s case.

Additionally, Mr. Kane reached out to several individuals on facebook as well as the Harrington family’s findmorgan.com site in attempts to speak to the family directly and request an interview. The Harrington’s were made aware of the concern for such requests by sources close to the investigation.

He has recently changed his facebook drastically. Nkoldfacebook

Mr. Kane, a member of the family owning the longtime furniture store of the same name in Charlottesville is also a UVA alumni and season ticket holder. In addition to UVA, Kane also claims to have attended Virginia Tech on many of his many social networking profiles. He also fancies himself as somewhat of a Rock band critic.

On his site, nkscouting.com which he has maintained Nkane1since 2001, Kane chronicles his trips to scout mostly High School basketball and football athletes. In an effort to make his site more interesting (his words) he details the travel experience, routes, times and in some cases photos of his visits to High Schools mostly within a few hours driving distance.

Very early on in Morgan’s case, blinkoncrime.com explored the idea that perhaps the double murder of VT freshmen David Metzler and Heidi Childs on August 27th should be investigated as a possible link to Morgan’s case simply because they attend the school and Morgan and Heidi bare a remarkable resemblance to one another.

11370030_BG1

As far as very odd coincidences go, the location of Nelson Kane’s scouting foray the evening of the August 28th could not be more relevant.

Kane scouted the game at Jefferson Forest High School. The very Kane0828School Heidi Childs graduated from a year earlier. Unlike most of Kane’s other journal entries of his athlete accolades, there is no mention of his travel experience to or from Forest High School so it is unclear where he left from, when he got there, or when he returned home.

This is in no way an accusation that Mr. Kane had any involvement whatsoever in such a heinous crime, of course, but given his proclivities for leaving at all hours of the day and night his keen attention to travel detail and familiarity with the area: Perhaps he saw someone or something amiss in his trip that could help investigators.

Nk1017a

On Saturday October 17th, Kane scouts a game, listens to the UVA football game on his way home and is home in plenty of time to make the concert.

Blink how do you know he was at the concert you ask? I do not. I do know he knows alot about security at the JPJ Arena, how to navigate the different lots near Uhall, and of course that there are blue portable lavatories next to Lanigan Field. His posts from the Charlottesville Daily Progress below:

I haven’t said anything in a while, but I read every post. Blink, you are covering Morgan Harrington’s disappearance better than anyone else. Thank you for that.

I can understand how we older people cringe at the thought of heroin use. Heck, I always remembered Janis Joplin and scores of others from the late 60′s and early 70′s who OD’ed on this drug. To my generation, it was the drug no one wanted to touch. Especially, not children from a great and loving home. And surely the drug never made it’s way onto college campuses.

Imagine my shock when I heard that my sweet, innocent, squeaky clean newphew was doing heroin! He was still in high school. When he was confronted by his dad–into rehab he went. I worry about him, because his dad has just lost everything because of the economic downturn, and left his son alone in this city. It seems that among the young, heroin is now an easy drug to get. In my day, all we worried about was pot. (marijauna)

    So here is my theory:

The Harrington’s found out about Morgan’s drug addiction. Heroin is so easy to get. She is put into rehab. When she got out, she worked with her dad over the summer, and lived at home. They were keeping a watchful eye on her. Maybe even as a well intentioned reward, they bought her and her friends the Metallica tckets. All Morgan had to do was obstain from using drugs to prove she was rehabilitated.

(The pill form of Oxycontin–is widely available throughout the nation. In the south, it is referred to as Hillbilly Heroin. One of my other newphews who lives in Salem, VA is an oxycontin addict.)

But, I have to say right here–once an addict, it is darned difficult to stay away from your drug of choice, no matter how long you have been clean.

So, let’s say that Morgan was fine–until she got to H’burg to meet with the other friends. One of them offers her the drug. She makes her call to her dad first, then she takes the drug. It all goes downhill from there. After all of this time without the drugs, maybe she did OD. Or if she didn’t, she is ashamed to go home. Also, she is tired of living under the strict rules of her family–so there is a possibility that she is alive, but is staying among others who condone and use the drug themselves.

I truly hope this post doesn’t offend anyone. That is in no way my intention.

    Blink,

Read this article about a VTech fan’s (from Crozet no less) experience at UVA:

    http://www.readthehook.com/blog/index.php/2009/11/30/taser-stops-man-and-bottle-from-entering-stadium/

It provides a likely explanation as to how MH wound up outside JPJ.

I believe RMC Security covers security for JPJ events as well.

Apparently, their policy is to ask impaired individuals to voluntarily leave the event.

    From the story:

“If someone voluntarily leaves,” says Hopwood, “they don’t call the police, so evidently they were having a problem with Mr. Hogberg.”

So, did MH “voluntarily leave” JPJ under threat of the alternative?

On a side note, while I think Hogberg’s actions were pretty stupid, I await Observer’s defense of LE’s action in this situation.

Im not sure it is fair to assume Observer will be in a defensive position on this one, but I will say I will need to review the legalities of a security person observing an intoxicated person and giving them the option to leave or call police if they do not.

I should have proof read that. I can’t believe I misspelled nephew twice. I’m sorry about that.

    FROM http://www.websleuths.com

    - An employee of nearby BB&T bank declined comment on investigators reviewing surveillance at the bank

    - the car was driven to the concert not by one of the girls but by the GUY — who did NOT go into the concert with them.

    No sources quoted however.

Lol, I am the MIS quoted source about the male driver. I said ON HERE which is the non-referenced reference the male drove both ways, and he did. I NEVER said he was not at the concert.

  5. cynosure says:

After reading through all of the comments the other night, my mind did wander to a possible drug problem (before these theories were posted here). In a number of the Facebook photos, notice how very pale and almost fragile Morgan looks compared to the rest of the group. Some of her parents remarks sent me in this direction too along with Morgan’s behavior on that night not making much sense.

Perhaps the POI has been a bad influence in the past and could be a danger to themselves and those around them – namely Morgan. In my observations, alcohol can lower the inhibitions of a recovering addict leading to a relapse. And in my experience, you cannot apply much logic to the actions of an addict.

This scenario does not make all the pieces “fit” but neither do any of the others. Understand the silent simmer B but it does seem to be a possibility. Or its just that my psyche prefers this scenario – a better chance of finding Morgan alive.

This is a heartbreaking story no matter what the cause and I pray every day for resolution for the family. I am in awe of the contributors on this site and, of course, Blink for steadfast devotion to the victims in these cases.

#1050 – Belleboyd – Wow. Can you people please drop this Monolith rubbish. You guys are posting links that you haven’t even bothered to read. The guy is 21, the man arrested is 31. The band is from the UK, they broke up in 2007.

There is a band called Monolith in VA, but the name of the guitarist is completely different – RS.

I really am getting tired of this mindless, baseless, finger pointing. If you are going to play detective, please, do a little bit of simple research before posting potentially damaging acussations.

Reece- your bordering on disrespectful. That poster asked a legitimate question, no finger pointing at all.
Except for maybe a little of mine, I pointed my finger at the calendar that Wooldridge is charged with an incident occuring at VT on August 27th. The same day 2 students attending same were murdered. You missed that.

  7. BlackPearl says:

Wow…I had a lot of reading to catch up on today. I take one evening off…

First, I wanted to offer my insight into the discussion of her changing appearance. I had seen this noted on another board/website previously with the person speculating about a possible pregnancy. I looked at the pictures but I myself couldn’t see the change in appearance that was noted. That said, if people do believe that her appearance changed drastically…and her weight was affected…

She could have been addicted to something. People have discussed heroin. I don’t know anything about how common it is at VT, UVA, JMU, etc. Another possibility though could be a stimulant like adderall or dexedrine. These are prescribed for ADD/ADHD but are popular amongst college kids because they help with concentration and help you study for extended periods of time. I had a roommate who abused his adderall Rx…

She could have had an eating disorder, as someone else mentioned. One thought I had was that eating disorders are sometimes a way of gaining some element of control in ones life when they feel like they have no control. For example, a bad situation happens or is ongoing— say parents are divorcing– girl develops anorexic because it gives her a sense of power, it makes her feel strong and capable (bc she can abstain from eating), and/or it gives her attention. I don’t know enough about dynamics of abusive relationships, but I was wondering (based on the speculation that there may have been someone she was seeing that her parents didn’t approve of) if she could have developed an eating disorder as a way of coping with an abusive boyfriend. He makes her feel bad about herself and she tries to be “perfect” and wants “control” of her life again. This also relates to the info. that she worked with children who were victims of domestic abuse. Was this a way of helping her heal? To help others who may have had similar experiences? Did he continue to hold some power over her even after their breakup or separation? Did she meet him outside of the show against her friends’ wishes? Does her mother think she might be under his influence now, physically or emotionally abused and losing weight/turning into a skeleton again?

Finally, I wanted to throw out there that she could also have lost the weight if she became severely depressed. Long story short, but because it might mirror her own story: when my first BF broke up with me my first semester of college I became really depressed. I lacked the experience and support network at the time to deal with it. I had zero appetite and ate 2 oranges for every meal. The weight melted away (I was already thin). People who I became friends with years later confided that based on my appearance my freshman year they thought that I was anorexic. Maybe others speculated about a drug addiction…who knows. My depression eventually lifted and the appetite came back. But what if Morgan went through a rough patch and that’s why her parents were happy to have had her close and happy this past summer?

  8. Judi says:

Again, from websleuths link above “Remember the dogs hit on MH’s scent at Wild Wings Cafe on West Main … I asked at the time if dogs would hit on transferred scent … bf drives MH’s car and thereby picks up her scent/skin cells … he drops the girls at the concert and he then drives to Wild Wings … OR, they all went to Wild Wings prior to going to the concert”

BLINK – Can we confirm this? Here is the link for the directions from JPJ arena and map of this place http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&source=hp&rlz=1R2ADFA_enUS342&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=0,0,11347194753118507295&fb=1&hq=wild+wings+cafe&hnear=charlottesville&gl=us&daddr=Historic+Amtrak+Station,+820+West+Main+St,+Charlottesville,+VA+22903&geocode=14502270902971226468,38.031845,-78.491443&ei=4AcYS778MM7vlAeViazmAg&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=directions-to&resnum=1&ved=0CAoQngIwAA

which part? To my knowledge, we dont know definitively what dogs hit where and where they were prior to the concert.

I also wanted to mention that perhaps we’re revisiting the cell phone battery discussion because (a) its a question mark and (b) we have no new leads and are going back to make sure we’ve picked through things enough.

One thing I didn’t understand is why, if her dad was a doctor and her family was wealthy if not comfortable, she continued to use a cell phone whose battery frequently fell out? It suggests the phone was old or beat up or broken and could have left her without a way to call for help if her car broke down or whatever at any point in time.

Also, this idea was put out on a different page weeks ago, but I thought it was a good point and a different way of looking at the situation of the cell phone/battery.

The person has speculated that perhaps Morgan got into a car with someone she knew or trusted. At some point, she began to sense that things weren’t right. Knowing that she had her cell phone in her purse and that it could ring at any point (alerting the BG to the fact that she had a phone on her) she slipped her hand into her purse and popped the battery out of the phone. Perhaps she put it in her pocket or waistband so that she could use it later but that the BG wouldn’t necessarily know that it was there. The thinking is that turning off a cell phone will cause it to make sound… a powering down jingle. If she was trying to be secretive, removing the battery would have disabled the phone without making noise. This theory is appealing in that it would show Morgan to be smart and interested in survival. But also incorporates the idea that the BG then returned to JPJ to ditch the purse in the parking lot at a later point in time (which some people don’t think happened).

I just wanted to put that out there FWIW.

  10. Judi says:

I want to add one last thing. Regardless which theory is accurate or close, the bottom line still remains that Morgan needs to be found. If foul play occured, she needs to be found, if abducted, she needs to be found, if OD’d, she needs to be found, if ran off, she needs to be found, if a drug problem, she needs to be found. THIS GIRL NEEDS ALL OF OUR HELP TO FIND HER AND SHE NEEDS FOUND ASAP REGARDLESS! AND, SOMETHING NEEDS TO GIVE.

  11. Judi says:

Blink – would like to confirm if dogs picked up her scent at this Wild Wings place which is 4 miles away from JPJ

  12. Judi says:

And, if they stopped they before the concert because if not and the dogs got her scent there, then she was there after she left the concert.

I love the Hook, don’t get me wrong, but the way they presented this story was with a good dose sensationalism mixed in…this is the way they sometimes present things, and you can read through the blogs of any one of their articles to see who and what creeps out of the woodwork to complain about anything and everything. You usually see the same names over and over again, and these forums are rampant with psychics and nuts.

This might be a better article on this arrest. Yes, the guy was a VT fan, but he was not arrested because of that. He was a local, trying to sneak a bottle into the stadium, was handcuffed and tried to run after he was placed in the police van. I’m not excusing the cops, they probably should have chased him on foot, but Hogberg was embarrassed by his own behavior and admits that here.

    http://www.newsplex.com/home/headlines/78174007.html

I did read that in the other one, and the Hook was very slanted in that coverage I agree.

  16. GnM says:

Just throwing this out there RE: the drug question. Since when does someone need heroin, etc. to become incapacitated? Based on personal experience years ago, I can tell you alcohol is enough by itself. It could have even more of an effect if her tolerance to alcohol was low — she was young and thin, maybe didn’t drink much or often before; or if she were on certain anti-depressants or other meds … I have known plenty of people who didn’t act like themselves when they were drunk. I personally am lucky to have survived my teenage years. I put myself in harm’s way many times while drinking alcohol. I’m not saying MH was under the influence. I don’t know. Just suggesting “under the influence” could be due to plain old alcohol and nothing more.

  17. chad says:

    JK2,Blink, suz,local all:

I am still trying to absorb al this. Yes, JK2, it is very possible. Anything is possible. Cant quite wrap my brain around this heroin thing. I guess I am really taken aback by even the word “heroin”. Back in my day it was needles and junkies, associated with the drug. Not 17-20 year olds, and college campuses. This is frightening stuff. I have a college age child, and I am just beginning to learn about ecstacy, ( my age is showing) which I am told is common place for the college age kids. Whatever happend to the keggers, and an occassional “duggy”??? Where are all these hard drugs coming from?
As far as for Morgan, I will have to say that today, I am very saddned by this rumor news of possible drug use, or even associates of Morgan, that are known drug addicts or heroin users. I know that it has been spectulated about her drug use. Some dots have been connected by posts today. JK and local, 3-6 months is a about the time frame for a good treatment program.
Drug/ alcohol addiction is a long heavy road to recovery. Some never recover, some do. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, yet alone a 20 year old beautiful girl with a bright future. If this drug use played direct or indirect a role in Morgan’s dissppearance, damn….. I know it is all speculative, but it sure takes this case to a different level, and certainly a sad one of an already tragic story. Still, she is missing, and still, someone knows where she is.

  18. Reece says:

#1056 – Blink – Not trying to be disrespectful, but this ‘theory’ originated on another site. I’m pretty sure this is the same person who was posting there.

And just to be clear, there was finger pointing by that person there.

And just so my position is completely clear, the accusation is completely preposterous. As well as no many other potentially damaging ones that i have seen posted by that group of people – like the one about how a shop owner took down a find morgan poster, so they ‘must’ have something to do with ‘it’.

I apologies to #1050 if that is in fact not the same person as on the ‘other’ site – but I’m getting a little tired of the wild theories being posted by people who do not take the 5 minutes it takes to check SIMPLE facts.

Reece- what theory are you talking about? Again, poster asked a question from an obvious google search, and if you have a problem with a poster on another site, take it there, no?

What is your theory of what happened to Morgan, or where she might be?

  19. TR says:

I have been catching up on the posts from the past few days, and I wanted to contribute something in regards to the speculation about Morgan’s possible drug use. Although I am a highly educated individual with a positive and loving family, I have a past with meth abuse. I spent five years in that vicious cycle. As such, I recognize it in people’s faces and eyes in particular. Several of Morgan’s photos, most notably the driver’s license (at least it appears to be with a blue background) and the family photo (where her mother is reclining behind her) seem to me to depict the face of meth. There are others, but every time I look at those, I think she is high. It’s her eyes, and how she is holding her body in the latter. Just my two cents, and I’m not sure how it relates to her disappearance. I can say that the need to do meth is strong enough to make a person leave a concert they have been waiting to attend for six months. It trumps everything.

  20. belleboyd says:

Reece? I was referring to the fact that perhaps the perv was using information he may have seen on the band member, being that their names were the same. Of course I am not insinuating that the band member is involved ONLY that his bio may have been used to lure young females by the perv. Get it?

    Re: Hook article

I cited that article because it dealt with RMC Security’s policy. I also noted that Hogberg’s actions were “pretty stupid.” I don’t believe it was LE’s finest moment either.

Re: The Phone (just a thought) –

LE probably wants to know if anyone lent MH a cell phone in order to link MH with a POI.

It’s possible, with MH’s parents monitoring her social networking accounts and her cell phone bills, that MH had purchased a prepaid cell phone to communicate with certain individuals. Perhaps the two phones even used the same battery.

I think people are on the same page with the understanding that a BF and or drug use could be part of the equation and realize the grip(of both…I used to be young once). No judgment and still looking for precious Morgan.

Now my husband was the type of kid that went to Woodstock wearing penny loafers and carrying a briefcase ..with schoolwork in it.I have to wise him up a bit.A kinder man I have never known.

And by the way,I’m getting jealous….I thought I was the 100,000th visitor!

Thank you all for your brainpower for the Harringtons sweet girl.

  23. BlackPearl says:

    TR,

Thanks for sharing your experience, I hope you’re doing well now. The look that you mention and the specific photos that you mention… do you think that her appearance is indicative of an addiction or high in general? As in on a substance of some kind? Or, for some reason, does a meth high or addict look a certain way that makes you think that meth, specifically, is what Morgan could have been on/struggling with? Also, I thought that meth ruined one’s teeth? Does it take some time for this to happen?

  24. acho says:

To commenter at 1015: I have thought about the outfit-planning meeting w/ her mom repeatedly. At Morgan’s same age, I lied to my parents a LOT (by then I am sure they believed we had a wonderful relationship, and we did, except I lied to them). And if I were going to take off or do something verboten, the very first thing I’d do to start the deception is to feign huge excitement about whatever it was I was presumed to be doing. **Including acting like my outfit was important to me and involving my mom in the planning of it.** All to reinforce their belief that I was doing what I said I would be doing. I therefore question whether that outfit planning proves anything about how excited to see Metallica she was (also Morgan’s alleged pre-show comment to the parking-lot witness about not caring about the opening act, “we’re here to see Metallica, right?”). My idea that she could have been being deceptive supports theories either that she ran away or that she simply never intended to do the concert but had some alternate, forbidden-fruit plans. (And re: the friends: If I’m right, she might not have fully let them in on it. Honestly, and I don’t mean disrespect, Morgan appears in a totally different league than the friends and those friends have always known it, for better or worse. I don’t buy that they were supposed to be pseudo babysitters that night, b/c I think even we would have seen more evidence that they looked for her, made a stink about her when she wasn’t home, etc.)

For those who think a 20-year-old does not feel bound by parental expectations and desire rebellion, you’re wrong. I’m 38 and a mother myself, and I still deal with that. I think plenty of women at age 20 feel under their parents’ thumbs, and if Morgan gave her dad her passwords and went home to study with him, she did, too. Just FWIW and it is not a negative about the parents, just something about some people (perhaps mainly young women).

Another FWIW: It doesn’t take much alcohol to impair judgment. Occasionally, when at my limit, I just wanted to get away from the crowd and out in fresh air. I would just leave and start walking home. Of course my friends would admonish me, but there was no stopping me when I wanted to get out of dodge. It’s entirely plausible to me, therefore, that she just took off, and that perhaps, when impaired, she pulled this kind of thing all the time. Sounds like she might have that free-spirit/occasional-loner streak in her.

Sorry to have written so much, and I didn’t mean for it to sound like True Confessions, but maybe it provides perspective. A lot of you are remarkably analytical with all this info, way more than I am, so maybe this helps some of you as you consider what Morgan may or may not have been capable of.

This case is so frustrating, but thanks to Blink—atleast there is reasonable discussion and the hope remains….I just heard a Sirius radio show in my car…A man from Americans Most Wanted TV Show was interviewed briefly by the two female hosts…he was mainly promoting the segments which will air this saturday..At the end of the interview, one of the hosts asked, ” Has there been anything discovered about Megan, the VT student?” he responded, “Morgan? Who was at the metallica concert?” She said, “Yes, Morgan”. His reply was very disappointing…I am typing as I remember, may not be his EXACT phrase: ” There is nothing. Her parents call us every week and there is nothing new we can tell them”.
I found that to be such a devastating statement. Her parents Call them???

  26. MT says:

to comment 1068, this was about to be my post. Meth use is huge in the US, and has really picked up among middle and upper class students. I was only in a college a few years back, and a few friends who i would have never thought, were meth users. Meth changes physical appearances more than any drug i know (or have used). I am in no way insinuating MH was a drug user, but for the sake of hypothetical i would think this route. Another would be adderol, a 21st century ritilin.

another comment regarding the cell phone, was it ever established what type of service her phone was on? Verizon & Sprint use CDMA, while Tmobile and ATT use GSM. GSM technology requires a sim card to identify the user, otherwise the phone is jailbreaked. With CDMA the phone is locked into the specific user once activated, and under most circumstances, the last location of the phone can be nearly pinpointed using the multiple towers and distance of signal to each tower. I use the technical jargon and question to establish what methods are available to LE to retrieve final data, and what could be subpoenaed in a investigation if needed.

  27. localcvillegirl says:

Starbucks (#072), I always enjoy your posts and wasn’t jumping on you about the Hook. I was jumping on the Hook. :) I think the security guys at the stadium would be the same ones at JPJ. They usually do have to escort several drunk students out of the stadium, and I believe this Crozet guy fan put up a squeal, thus the cuffs. I’ve seen them take great care with the really drunk ones and get them to a rescue squad for a quick trip to the ER. I don’t know how it was at the Metallica concert, though, but I’m assuming there were lots of rescue squads waiting in line. I think Skyler said something about this earlier.

  28. sobermom says:

First time poster. Re: TK. I agree 100%. I am a sober addict/alcoholic and nothing, NOTHING could come between me and my substances when I was active. I had the same exact thought as you regarding her “meth-face” in the photos you mentioned. I come from a good family, straight A high school student, I’m a squeaky clean mom, wife now. I tried to get sober when I was Morgan’s age and I could not. One reason was that my on-again off-again boyfriend was a dealer. I could not see him, or visit places we had gone without wanting to use and I dropped out a college for a while to get away from him. We had a very volatile relationship…Lots of craziness, me jumping out of cars, taking off in the middle of nowhere to get away from him. I am so lucky & grateful to be alive.

Has anyone thought that maybe she was hit by a car in the parking lot? Maybe even accidently, on purpose by her the person she was going outside to meet? The purse drops, she gets scooped up. Soemthing similar happened to me. Just putting it out there.

  29. sobermom says:

    woops, meant TR not TK.

  30. suz says:

I’m not ready to say her friends are ‘chippers’ at this point. Cute Sarah S and the other friends I’ve seen seem too Rubenesque (like snice college girls should be) to be steady users, if we’re talkin’ H. But,

  31. TR says:

    Hi BlackPearl,

Thanks, I am doing great. I think she looks extremely high in some of the photos I have seen. Coupled with her thin body, I guess I think her appearance could be indicative of an addict. I think the media portrays meth addicts as toothless, sore riddled characters for shock value and to frighten (which is fine) but my teeth are perfect and I’ve never had open sores on my face. People from middle to upper class environments with access to whatever they need can easily mask addictions.
She may not have been an addict–but I would bet my life she was high on meth in some of the photos I have seen.
Also, as 1075 points out, people often would never guess someone is an addict. NONE of my friends knew I used meth. My fiance who is a leading Silicon Valley businessman also didn’t know. I guarded it….but I also put myself in harm’s way many, many times.

TR- congrats on your recovery, that is amazing. I cannot say if Morgan was using or not. What I can say is that many years ago I had someone very close to me admit an addiction they had for years I was stunned over. It happens.

Appearing on CNN Headline News channel’s Prime News program on Monday, November 16, Gil Harrington expressed shock that her daughter might have hitchhiked or willingly left her purse and phone. She wondered if Morgan might have been “given something or taken something” that would have altered her normal behavior.
“None of it adds up to the girl I know,” said her mother.

I think you can rule out the possibility that Morgan had a history of using hard drugs. Even less likely she hh, behaviour doesn`t fit the personality.

I have been quiet on this today for a reason. I think the exploration of the issue is important on a few levels, however, I do not believe Morgan was on hard drugs at any time. That said, I do believe she was adventurous with them at parties/events. I think her dutiful parents sniffed that out and put her on the short leash.

I also believe she was under the influence of something that night. If she had never done it before, or if it was not what she expected, she very easily could have had a bad reaction to it. Does anyone know a drug she may have taken ( or been given) with side effects that are set off by the noise/lighting that would include symptoms of ascerbic or agressive behavior?

Wouldn’t it make sense for LE to begin their investigation at Virginia Tech and work their way to Charlottesville. Since Ms. Harrington’s apartment was in Blacksburg, she attended school, had friends, classmates there, I would think there’s a whole lot of information that could be gathered from and around the campus. These people are probably well aware of the different circles in which she travelled, if she was dabbling in more than recreational drugs – with whom and what males she was seeing on and off campus. I’m sure Morgan was a lovely young lady. But once away from home at that age, we can all behave in a different fashion than we would elsewhere.

Great post! Reading that sounded so much like me at 20! I was in college, lived with my parents for the summers and I *tried* to do whatever I wished! Except my parents weren’t having it…especially paying my tuition and letting me live “rent free” while I partied away my college years. They tried to control me more and more…so I lied at every occasion…all the while having a very close relationship with my mom. We would talk for hours. I was probably more close with her then than now…but we also butted heads more then than now.
Hmmm…sounds like you are on to something.
I am not implying this is the case with MH by any means but it is nice to stand back and look at our own lives at 20.

Once last question, did she not have her apartment during the summer??? From Dr. Harringtons comments about working with him during the summer and she stayed there, did she not have the apartment then?

Also, there is a hidden meaning behind her parents having her passwords, right? Being 20 once, my privacy was my priority!

Money issues, alcohol, possibly drugs and lies are what usually make up typical college kids. I am not so sure these really factor into her disappearance but at this point anything is possible.

Blink, I have never thought the Childs-Metzler murders and Morgan vanishing have anything to do with one another. When I first heard about the C-M murder my first thought was that it was a “local nut”. Although I grew up in the area I had never been to Caldwell Fields and had my husband drive me there one weekend. Blink, I cannot describe the uneasy feeling I had while there. It is so isolated! That is one reason I believe it was a local. It is really out in the boondocks and I don’t think you could ever just happen to stumble on the location if you didn’t know it was there. It is on a back country road that turns into a dirt road several miles before you get to Caldwell Fields. It was known in the area as a place the student and young people would go to party, and from what I have heard over the years, it could really get pretty wild. I guess they could have stumbled upon a drug deal or something but I just don’t think so. I know the residents in the area have complained a long time about the student and partying. Let me tell you, the place is deserted now. It looked like no one had been there for quite awhile. The grass in the field had grown up and there was no sign of activity. Creepy,Creepy place. On other forums there had been a lot made of the shooting range in the area and people wondering if it could have been a stray bullet. It is a long way between the range and CF, so no way. I can’t get over what a lonely place it is to die. I never want to go there again. Just so sad. I cannot get over the fear they must have felt with no one around to cry out for help to.

Liz, this was defintely not a stray bullet or bullets. This was an execution, and it occurred in the parking lot, not the campsite itself.

I once saw a guy totally freak out when he was slipped a hit of mescaline in his drink. It was a pretty awful thing to do to someone. Mesc to me is a synthetic hallucinogen that would definitely have you sensitive to light and sound. It’s a tiny little pill, CHEAP, and it lasts all night, even if you hate the feeling you can’t shake it. If you never did it before and encountered a bad vibe, that vibe could magnify tenfold to the point where you simply want to disappear or get away from a crowded noisy area. You’d get paranoid as all hell too. It wouldn’t matter if you were waiting 2 years to see a Beatles reunion, you would want out of there. And yes, I speak from personal experience. I don’t know if anyone still uses this stuff, but it could have the same effect whether you took it willingly or unknowingly. I always felt a bad reaction to some foreign substance was the most logical explanation for her going outside.

  37. MT says:

@1081, alcohol is the first that comes to mind, hands down especially hard alcohol. I know its been mentioned many times…but hard to imagine it couldnt be a factor. Additionally, at certain levels of alcohol, it is nearly impossible to control your behavior (blacked out). I have been drunk a few times in which i woke up with scratches on my face and missing my phone, wallet, keys all in different places from stumbling around.

In terms of drugs, the only thing that would cause random aggression, would be some sort of hallucinogen, LCD / Acid.

  38. Liz says:

Blink. I know the murders occurred in the parking lot.
Was it ever released if the murders were at close range or from farther away? With a high powered rifle with scope or handgun? I have always had the impression, probably incorrect, that the shooter was someone away from the parking lot that shot, possibly from the woods, etc. They were asking anyone hunting in the area to be on the lookout for anything that could be evidence. If the murder was by someone in the parking lot in a vehicle, why would they have people looking in the forest? I guess the perp could have disposed of evidence in those areas. I did see on tv where LE were spread over the field looking for evidence. Do you have anymore details? There is not really a “campsite” per se, but a gravel lot with a large field to the front, behind and to the side. There is also a dirt road opposite the lot, on the other side of the road that goes back to a dead end in the Jefferson National Forest. In a strange twist, the area is not far from where Henry Lee Lucas was born and grew up.

I know a little more than I am comfortable saying on this one, but the weapon was a hangun, close range.

Blink… in 1081 are you alluding to mushrooms or something on those lines? My old roommate used to do them occasionally and one time when we went out to a bar after he kinda freaked out. I can see it happening

    Blink -

I have been thinking on the Metzle/Childs case for quite awhile now, and I totally agree with you, they were literally executed sitting in their car, what kind of demented human being does that to kids out to sit and talk to one another.

imo, this is a crime where they are hurting themselves by not releasing details, as in estimated TOD, activities day before/day of. Roomates, who the car belonged to, etc.

  41. TR says:

I did a bit of research and it seems ecstasy makes a user extremely sensitive to sounds and sights (stimuli in general). It also has an amphetamine base that could account for the assertiveness or aggression that has been reported. Otherwise, I’m not sure. Mushrooms or LSD alone seem to inhibit people more and have the opposite effect (but every person’s chemistry reacts differently).

  42. Liz says:

Blink, If you are referring to the car C & M were in, it was David Metzler’s car- a dark blue Toyota. I heard LE thinks he was shot first and Heidi was killed while trying to flee. Do you believe they have a POI?

I actually do not. I don’t think they have anything other than a possible few sightings of cars/van in the area. Respectfully, my thoughts would change if Ms. Childs was assaulted, but I would be surprised if she were. I feel strongly this was a hit. You have a Dr. and a VSP Officer as Dad’s. 2 Kids in their first week of school without an enemy on the planet.

  43. sunshine says:

i personally think its possible that if there is a poi right now, it is the male who drove morgans car to and from the jpj arena from Harrisonburg.

if this is true..then i pose the following scenario:

i dont think this male attended the concert with the girls. i think he went to uva to hang out/party with people he knew at the school while the girls were at the concert. i think when morgan found herself outside, she called and/or texted this guy when she realized she couldn’t get back in the concert. i think she figured she would hang out with him and his friends until the concert was over…

You mean like Waynesboro, for example?
    B

i think after they met up, something went seriously wrong…and now morgan is missing.

if this scenario or something close to it is true, i believe she isn’t too far from charlottesville.

i was also wondering if this guy who drove morgans car is from an area close to the 105 mile marker area on skyline drive?

  44. Liam Fahy says:

In my opinion the only drug i know of that would cause Ms Harrington to behave the way she supposedly has, is the most common drug to be abused, alcohol. Might explain why she didn`t drive her own car and didn`t have the keys, who would give a drunk friend their car keys?

  45. Liz says:

  46. TR says:

In regards to 1089, I believe the Zodiac killer did just that. I’m certainly not suggesting a connection, but there are people looking for just such an opportunity. Where do young people park to be alone? A perfect place to look for victims. But, it has also been suggested that there was a personal motive at work in this particular case.

“Does anyone know a drug she may have taken ( or been given) with side effects that are set off by the noise/lighting that would include symptoms of ascerbic or agressive behavior?”

Hoping that Morgan wasnt doing meth or heroine (and not knowing much about those), my first thought is mushrooms. College kids think they’re harmless and they can be really fun but also one can easily go from having a great experience to an awful one. Lights are much more vivid and noises can drive you crazy.
Of course lsd/acid would be stronger in terms of effects so really i’d say a hallucinigenic is most likely what you are asking about Blink. They can take a little while to hit you and then suddenly the noise and bright lights could drive you to a feeling of uncomfortability/need for space/air possibly causing her to leave the arena. Shrooms can be fun but also very mind-altering.

Liam, B (re: #081) – and everyone contemplating the veracity of MH’s possible drug use:

I spotlighted Shannon’s post (#010) from another site because, even if she is wrong or misguided about it being known around campus that MH hung with a certain crowd (and that crowd was brought to you by the letter H), she seemed sincere. That doesn’t mean she’s right; just means she felt compelled to pass along what she heard. I haven’t read anyone reference or imply MH’s association with other drugs, but sure, she could have dabbled in anything – sounds like one could access just about any drug one wanted in her area. Further, a quick Google search brought up the article referenced in my post about a surge in heroin use amongst Roanoke’s 19 to 23-year-old set, which is considered a serious, unprecedented concern by officials. Just thought it was an interesting coincidence.

Not to mention, my personal experiences experimenting and seeing the dangerous (and deadly, in some cases) experimentations of others when we were that age – one bad (usually alcohol-fueled) decision or indulgence can change Eveything. But, like anything I post, it’s a paper theory easily punctured by the truth when/if that time comes.

I think we can all agree that MH was a *fairly* typical 20-year-old buzz-chasing college kid. I mean, her myspace sign-on was “HighYa” … and I don’t think it referred to her fondness for flying kites. I’m inclined to believe that her disappearance is related to drug use or something that occurred as a result of it, but it’s hard to hammer down what her connection near UVA was, in that regard. VT, sure. But she was in a city hours away from her usual crowd. Who else was in Cville that night that could have hooked her up/picked her up? Is there a mystery party guy that joined MH, friends, and unknown concert-going male in car? Did he head down with them to party, *supply* the party, and head for a party while they went to the show? That seems logical, but I’m basing it on things unsaid. Many of us have speculated there was an additional person that has not been noted publically… why? I’m not even sure where that assumption started. B?

I gotta say, though – I’m past the “struggle/forcible removal” at the hands of a stalkery BF or ex-BF or friend’s BF or stranger in the parking lot. She was on her own outside unexpectedly, told her friends she couldn’t come back in, and began texting with someone while she made her way – purposely, it seems – through the lots and toward the main road, which, according to LE, she made it to. If someone she texted with was indeed in the area, not “another city,” then the 20-30 minutes between 9 p.m. and 9:30 would be a reasonable amount of time for MH to demand “Come get me,” and for the textee to oblige. yeah, yeah – same old speculative potential nonsense, but it makes sense to me. LE obvs does not think it was a random act of abduction or violence. They know who she corresponded with, and what her intentions *may* have been. But, apparently, little else.

And, as B notes, we won’t know more either… until they find MH or her remains.

(Side note: It’s sad to realize that the best ending we can hope for is that she was strung out for a couple months, holed up with some druggie.)

J2K: Shannon is a dude. Does that change your thoughts on that rumor in any way?

In regard to 1081, if drugs, I’m thinking Acid. It’s still popular believe it or not. The other thing I am wondering is this possibly a bi-polar episode. Morgan is in the age range in which it typically manifests. Would/could explain some of the reported behavior with or without drugs or alcohol involved.
