Morgan Harrington Murder: Rumors Of A Suspects Arrest

Posted by BOC Staff | Alex Harrington,Amy Melvin,Dan Harrington,Gil Harrington,Morgan Harrington,Murdered,Sara Snead | Thursday 28 January 2010 3:11 pm

Charlottesville, VA– This afternoon, originating on a VT Athletics Site rumors clogged the web that a suspect was placed under arrest for the murder of Morgan Harrington. After my 20th comment in 10 minutes and 12th email inquiry about it, I went to the source.

Crime scene

..There has been no arrest. It is an unfounded rumor and I have no idea how or where it started. I can only assume it stemmed from the fact that we completed our investigation of the crime scene at Anchorage Farm early this afternoon, I guess I will probably have to put out an email this afternoon..”

– Corrine Geller, PR Manager for VSP to Blink

As exclusively reported yesterday on blinkoncrime.com, it is expected that the  and VSP upcoming conversations with those on the list with permission to hunt on Anchorage Farm, will propel the investigation into the murder of Morgan Harrington quickly.

However, Virginia State Police are not discussing whether or not they have a person of interest or suspect in this case.

There is however, unreleased new information and new evidence gleaned from the crime scene. VSP will not disclose what personal effects were found with Morgan’s remains at this time.

The viral arrest rumor was not the only odd occurrance today.

In what appears to be an unrelated coincidence, an explosive device was detinated on the train tracks close to James Madison University this morning. A nearby dorm has been evacuated in connection with materials found at the scene, and a criminal investigation has been launched by the ATF.

JMU is the school several of Morgan’s friends attend, and from where the group departed to attend the Metallica Concert that fateful night of October 17, 2009.

Check back to blinkoncrime.com for updates to this developing story.

I am not impressed, at all with this statement.
3 or 4 of the people that post here seem to be much more adapt to solving this crime.

This could have waited till after the services.

  8. Watchtower says:

It makes no difference to me whether Dr. Harrington is a psychiatrist or a sanitation worker. Much the same as anyone else, I sympathize with them for the loss of their daughter and I have expressed that clearly in previous posts.
I would not wish them to be “revictimized” by Morgan’s killer…however, until that person(s) is behind bars, that person(s) is free and presumably capable to victimize another young woman and her family.
*My opinion* is that at times their statements come across as calculated toward how the public perceives them personally, and Morgan herself and finding who did this to her seems secondary.
For example, the day after Morgan’s body was found, in the midst of posters (myself included) conveying their condolences, outrage and heartfelt sentiments about Morgan, Dr. Harrington was one of the first posters on here – however, his comment was not on his daughter’s behalf, but to take issue with a previous post (copied over from some other forum) in which some rather unflattering things were said about him and his wife specifically.
I have read many theories/comments here and elsewhere mentioning rather unflattering utterances about Morgan’s *possible/alleged* man-stealing, heroin use, etc. (When I have read them here, it has been in the context of someone bringing over a post from elsewhere, not anyone here being the originator of these comments). My point is, Dr. Harrington did not rush forth to defend Morgan’s character, but did do so quickly when his own and Mrs. Harrington’s character was maligned. So yes, I did find that a bit “off-putting”. Again, *my opinion*.
While the Harringtons have the media and all these public forums at their disposal, Morgan would be best served if they would use these platforms – first and foremost – to put the focus on finding out who did this. If it were me and I came to realize -as the Harringtons surely have noticed – that my statements and/or bloggings were shifting the focus onto *me*, I would remedy this and re-direct the focus to finding the killer of my loved-one.
I’m not here to polish any apples and I’m not here to use it as some forum for “getting to know *me*”. I want the person(s) who did this to Morgan Harrington caught.

Respectfully, you say that like there’s some sort of playbook or manual for this. I am thinking they are busy mourning vs. concern over how they are perceived.

Can this be the last post on analyzing the Harrington’s responses et al? I am over it.

Kimberly, jot down the date and time of the last post you read…it’s given at the top of each post. That’s the best identifier for me.

I have to say Wow after that press conference. Wow, because Lt. Rader looks seriously determined to solve this crime, and Wow, because it looks like the Law Enforcement agencies involved in solving it may not have a clue. He REALLY chooses his words when deciding what information to release and when asking for what he needs from the community. This conference was really an appeal to the community for help. He was very insistent that all the requirements for tips are given within these 6 points. I wish I didn’t have to go out and see how they covered it on the 5-6 pm news, because I hope the community got the word. Here’s what I found to be crucial from the CBS newsplex story:

<> This is a new hotline SPECIFICALLY for tips on the LOCATION of the remains.

  10. anotherB says:

Bass bought the farm in 1983, but family members of the White family were buried there until 1992. Or did I misunderstand that? Is that common practice?

  11. juliemooly says:

I forgot the link, and it looks like my post got chopped up because I don’t know how to use those triangle parentheses thingies, so here are Rader’s 6 points:
Point 1: The person responsible may or may not be formerly connected with the Anchorage Farm properties. Investigators believe that person may have traveled, worked, recreated, visited or periodically passed through the farm.

Point 2: That person was inclined to return back to that area during a high-stress situation.

Point 3: There are people who know the offender or know someone who passed through that area.

Point 4: The person responsible has specific knowledge of the area where the body was found.

Point 5: The choice of that location is quite different that leaving Harrington’s body on a public highway or shoulder. Therefore, Rader said, “there’s got to be a reason why” the person chose the farm.

Point 6: Traveling to the Anchorage Farm area would have created a significant risk for any person not familiar with the area and not comfortable with that setting. The farm has difficult obstacles, like streams, fences, defects and terrain that changes.

“[People] may know something they don’t think is important,” Rader said. “There are more answers regarding that location. We believe those people in the community could tell us who frequents the area.”

‘Rader did not release a specific cause of death or any suspects. He released a new phone number to submit tips about the location.

The hotline for tips on location is 434-709-1685.’

State police provide update on Morgan Harrington’s case

There are two statements that stick out like a sore thumb to me from the above linked article dated today:

    1. State police say the people who know Anchorage Farm and the North Garden area know information that will help them lead to Harrington’s killer.
    2. State police say the person(s) responsible felt inclined to return back to the area during a high stress situation.

“Anchorage Farm AND the North Garden area”
“inclined to return back to the area…”

I took this to mean 1 tennant family. Can anyone clarify for me if one of the houses was rented by one family until recently? I am under the impression that at least one house on the property has been traditionally rented to UVA grad students, but what about the other house. Did the M&M Bass move into one of the houses shortly after they acquired the property in 1983, or did another family live in one of the houses for a signficant amount of time (20+/- yrs). Bass bought the farm in 1983, but family members of the White family were buried there until 1992. Or did I misunderstand that? Is that common practice?

This is common where I live. Two of our farms have family cemetaries on them. When we bought the land, it was stipulated that the cemetary would be accessible to the family and loved ones would still be buried there. I think it may be common in other places but I don’t know.

I would think that previous owners family members would be very familiar with the land. May even visit the cemetary from time to time.

I had similar questions, but wanted to add that this document is dated in the year 2000 (front page of document). So are we to assume the “last 20 years” rented by one tenant meant 20 years up until this form was filled out in 2000? Or did the “one rental tenant” continue to reside there? Yes, locals, can any of you provide some insight to this? I too, have read elsewhere that this house was rental housing by UVA students?

When did UVA students stop renting at this location?

I know a few people have expressed some frustration with respect to navigating the new format. I don’t know if this helps but I’ve found the “older comments” and “newer comments” links at the top and bottom of each page have helped me to navigate as well as the date and time shown at the top of each comment.

If I’m on a page that only has an “older comments” link, I know I am on the most recent page and I can then navigate to older comments if I wish by clicking on the “older comments” link. If I am on a page that has both “older comments” and “newer comments” links at the top and bottom of the page, I can click either link, depending on whether I want to navigate to more recent or older comments.

After being off the board for a length of time, I will click the “older comments” link to get back to where I last read which can be determined by looking at the date and time shown at the top of each comment.

If they know who it is why can’t they tie him to the land? Or are they just giving locals the chance to arrive at the same conclusion they have, while giving him a chance, today, to realize they know and he can step forward and take responsibility before they come for him?

Thanks for the link Ragdoll. In the news conference it was said he visits in times of high stress. One does not visit land. Who would someone be visiting? Someone they know, someone that knows them? Someone that can no longer reveal secrets?

I always thought Morgan would be placed somewhere that meant something to her and or her killer. That piece of land is more than a dump site. It represents solace, acceptance, reverence, peace, reckless abandon, simpler times and safety to someone.

Maybe he had help at some point, or accomplices they are speaking to?

  38. total amateur says:

That press conference was SO bizzare, and devoid of information- you have to wonder if it WAS specifically directed at a certain individual, pleading with them to come forth. I dont know if thats just Lt. Rader’s normal demeanor… but it was almost like he knew it would seem pointless to everyone else. It’s like he was talking in code. Either that or they REALLY have no POI at all, and are praying someone local saw/heard something. I don’t think thats the case though. I think they might have DNA, and need to put a specific POI in the area on or around October 17 in order to obtain a warrant. Someone who lives near the farmland saying “I passed a (insert car make/model/color) on my way to the store for ice cream at around 10:30 on October 17th” might literally be all it takes to bring this guy to justice.

Couple of questions for Blink, or anybody that knows (I’ll probably get slapped for not reaserching enough to know who they are…lol):
    1) In an above post, Blink mentions a “BT” in reference to the gravesite on Anchorage Farm… “BT, friend on WT’s facebook.” Who is WT, and/or relationship to MH, or the case?
2)How close to this “graveyard” was Morgan’s body? Was it actually “in” it? I’m guessing not, but that would DEFINITELY be telling.

Only things that really worried me about NOT having a specific POI were the comments Lt.Rader made in response to a question asking if they thought the offender lived in the area… and he responded “We have no idea”. Also he was directing toward locals that “It might be someone who lived here 5 years ago”, and talking about the area’s “history”. Hopefully this was just posturing.

  39. zarpisimo says:

PamTX @ 0:20 p. – I saw that the doc was cir. 2001. I did not see the 2000 date, but that’s what I took it to mean, that the “big” house had been rented out the last 20 years (meaning to date of the doc) to a tennant. I read it to mean 1 tennant family, but I could be misinterpreting that statement. I know there are 2 houses on the property. I know from comments on here that traditionally one of the houses has been rented to UVA grad students over the years, but the way this statement read, I took it to mean that the “big” house had been rented by 1 tennant. I read somewhere where Mr. Bass explained about who lives in what house in an initial interview after he found Morgan, but I can’t find that info now. I don’t remember where I read it. So, my question is, did M&M Bass move into one of the houses on the property after they acquired it, or has both houses been rental property since the acqusition.

I see where Blink’s wheels are turning …. White family … Teel … WT …. I can’t wait to see if someone can leave some cheese out that she’ll bite on.

  40. J2K says:

I’m not attributing any meaning to this other than to point it out… but there are multiple members of the White family in that cemetery, and there is also a White who lives directly across the street, right on Red Hill Road. Maybe he has family in the cemetery; if so, he and his family would have open access to the property, as stated in the deed… So he/they would fit the description of the local people LE is interested in hearing from, right?

    Why, yes ma’am.

I would also think it relative to the door to door question that gave a very pregnant pause.

The word “opportunity” was used a lot. I believe Rader is saying, this is your “opportunity” to not be associated with this crime should you come forward and tell us what you know.

  46. suz says:

I think if we look at stuff LE has said all along, they’ve been telling us that they weren’t even sure a crime had been committed until the body was found, they haven’t had a POI, and still don’t, and now they are pleading with the community to finger a monster living among them (which, hopefully, is exactly what the community will want to do).

Guess it depends how close knit the folks are around there. Hopefully someone will come forward.
